ummer in in the Duchy is a time for fun, feasting and festivals! With a wide range of locations across the county and tunes to suit every taste, Cornwall now has a world-renowned festival calendar to fill your diary. Whether it be clifftop revelry, an eclectic weekend on a Cornish estate or some woodland wonderment, Rosie Cattrell has been on a whistle-stop tour of some of her favourites from page 23. If you’re visiting one of these amazing events from out-of-county, then we’ve also got you covered with some special places to stay from page 47. If your festival visit coincides with a longer stay then we’ve also been sampling some of the fine foodie fayre on offer at Cornwall’s restaurants (from page 70) to get those taste buds tingling. Our guest Foodie editor, Jude Kereama, joins us once again this issue as he muses on Cornwall’s hospitality industry and the county’s place on the world food map. Don’t forget, we’ve always got our luxury property showcase (from page 31), home inspiration (from page 36) and some exciting competitions (page 83) for you to enjoy... …happy reading!

Around Cornwall in 38 churns

Calling all

art lovers! A remarkable and very unusual art auction has been launched to raise funds for Cornish healthcare charity Cornwall Hospice Care. ‘Around Cornwall in 38 Churns’ has been devised by Sue Dennett of Newquay who also wanted to showcase the county’s talented artists and stunning locations. The project is being supported by Rodda’s Creamery, Visit Cornwall and David Lay Auctions and will culminate in the grand finale of the churn auction at Truro Cathedral in September. Artists from across Cornwall have been given a churn, kindly donated by Rodda’s Creamery, and have offered their talent and time to decorate each one in their own particular style. They include famous names such as Kurt Jackson, Anthony Frost and Dick Twinney. Each will be featured at venues around Cornwall throughout the summer. Nick Rodda is the Managing Director of Rodda’s Creamery: “Churns are not only iconic but a beautiful shape and

I think they lend themselves to this charity project. This is a brilliant idea and showcases our heritage while also giving a nod to the current day talents of our local artists. Rodda’s is part of the tapestry of Cornwall and we’ve always worked with local charities.” Sue Dennett is the Chair of Cornwall Hospice Care’s Newquay Fundraising Group and has been involved for the last 38 years: “The churns look amazing and will I’m sure, prove a big attraction at the many venues where they’re being displayed through the summer months. We’ll then complete the auction on Wednesday 21st September at Truro Cathedral.” For more information visit www.davidlay.co.uk/upcoming-auctions or www.38churns.co.uk

The manor itself is available as a whole in all its imposing glory, or as two self-sufficient units, while the bespoke, contemporary-chic shepherds hut is a particularly exciting addition for 2022. A fresh start for the Island Gallery Set in the heart of St Ives’ historic Downalong, the Island Gallery St Ives opened under new ownership in December 2021. The gallery is now a welcoming and intimate space specialising in high-quality contemporary art with a focus on west Cornwall and still life painting, fine art ceramics and environmental sculpture by eight permanently represented artists. Gallery owner, Sarah Jane Frost says: “After working for a large gallery previously, I decided to set up my own gallery where I could take the same professional approach to gallery management but on a smaller scale. Each piece of work in the gallery has been personally chosen to create the sense of a curated space with different

mediums and styles all in conversation with each other.” For more information call 07471 854657 or visit www.islandgallerystives.co.uk

The team at Justin Duance are best known for their bespoke, made-to-order rings cast in beach sand, or in-laid with hardwoods. More recently, they have launched a new section on their website called ‘Off the Benchpeg’, where you can shop a small selection of ready-made jewellery. Many pieces are one-offs; some are experimental, and there are also some classic designs available without the usual six-to-eight-week lead time. The pieces include rugged Rough Gemstone rings made using ethically sourced sapphires in their natural form, set into precious metal, as well as a

When the sun comes out, most people would like to relax and enjoy their outdoor space rather than have to constantly maintain it. This is where ColourFence comes in. A metal fence from ColourFence is a great, low-maintenance solution for any garden and is very popular due to the fact that it is highly durable with a 25-year materials guarantee. The fences are available in four colours. They can either be plain, or if you are after a more decorative fence then you can include a trellis topper to complete the look. In short, if you are looking for lowmaintenance fencing for your garden which you don’t need to paint or maintain other than hosing it down a couple of times a year, then ColourFence is a great option for you. Exploring beneath the surface Emily Penfold is a British multidisciplinary artist who graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2018. Emily explores the fragility of life, celebrating its internal magic in all its forms. She highlights the light and positivity in the dark, creating work that is beautiful yet thought-provoking. Delving into the fragile dimensions of sea life, Emily explores the delicacy of what lies beneath the surface. Inspired by this powerful force of nature, the infinite water of the sea evokes an unequivocal sense of both fear and calm. Something that can make you feel so fragile and alive all in one. Particularly fascinated by jellyfish, Emily uses light and bold colours to

highlight the hypnotic beauty of these translucent bundles of energy. For more information email eompenfold@hotmail.com or visit www.emilypenfold.com

Kurt Jackson is an artist known the world over for his breathtaking landscape paintings depicting the splendour of the natural world. But every June, Jackson takes a break from creating seascapes and turns his attention to painting the sea of humanity as he returns to Glastonbury Festival as its official Artist-inResidence, a post he has held since 1999.

Over the last 20-years Jackson has painted some the biggest names in music including Amy Winehouse, Oasis, Radiohead, Foo Fighters and the Rolling Stones while standing within touching distance of rock royalty and out in the crowd amongst us mere mortals. The paintings created over the weekend are then sold to raise funds for the festival charities Greenpeace,

Not only have they opened a bar in Porthleven Shipyard, serving delightful ‘C&T’s and signature cocktails, and providing indoor and outdoor areas in which to enjoy them, they’ve also opened a shop there where connoisseurs can peruse their range of spirits and purchase favourites to take home. You can even book Curio Gin Tastings and Cocktail Masterclasses, but be quick because they’re extremely popular! As if all of that wasn’t enough, they have also been busy creating more Cornish spirits, such as Yuzu & Mandarin Gin, Raspberry & Lime Vodka and Spiced Golden Rum, and have also opened Kyabba Kitchen, serving authentic

Creating her fused glass from a studio inside the historic Market House in St Austell, Claire Harris’ designs are influenced heavily by the beautiful Cornish land and seascapes, and she can often be found visiting her local beach with her sketch book in hand. Originally training as a water engineer, Claire switched paths to pursue a more creative life; she is self-taught and loves the colours of the sea, so incorporates them into most of her designs. She also employs the use of textural elements,

creating a larger surface area with which to reflect light and bringing energy and movement into her work. You can find her designs – including her best-selling ‘Nearly Home Trees’ – on display in her studio, where you’ll also see work from lots of other local artists, including ceramics, mixed media, candles and silver jewellery. Enjoy a summer of safe paddling With more people taking to the water to try stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), the need for good safety advice and education is needed. This is where SUP Standards come in; it is dedicated to ensuring that the rising sport of stand-up paddle boarding is as safe an environment as possible for those taking to the water. With SUP Standards, there are countryspecific sections allowing stand up paddlers to check for any particular standards, safety and reference links, in their own country. The SUP Standards committee is a dedicated team of experts

Building onSaint’s foundations of quality Join the Way Trek The Rising Sun in Truro marries relaxed high-end dining with a country pub feel. In was in 2014 that owner, Tom, realised his dream of creating a beautiful gastropub. His approach, coupled with an ethos of inherent quality and attention to detail, has created a loyal following and industry acclaim.

Almost two years ago, Tom and partner, Kate, started to grow the business, taking over The Pheasant (pictured) – a rural pub set in the charming village of St Newlyn East, near Newquay. A simpler style is key here but with the backbone of quality and service. Perfect for family get-togethers, casual dining, or a glass of something cool and refreshing after a day on the beach. If you’re planning a holiday along the south Cornish coast this summer, why not stay at The Falmouth Hotel? Within easy reach of everything the bohemian seaside town of Falmouth has to offer, guests here can enjoy its independent boutiques and galleries, as well as its trendy bars, cafés and restaurants drawing on the region’s natural larder. Head out from the town centre and explore sites of historic insight, such as Pendennis Castle (and its sister, St Mawes, just a short ferry ride away), or while away your days on the nearby sands of Gyllyngvase or Castle beach. However you spend your days, The Falmouth Hotel promises to provide a luxury base to retreat to, be it a beautiful room within the grand Victorian architecture of the hotel, or in one of the luxury Falmouth Lodges on site, which also happen to benefit from all of the hotel’s facilities! he world has felt pretty quiet lately. Cancellations and postponements of the festivals, live music events and cultural celebrations we so looked forward to, while necessary, certainly put a dampener on our hopes for the summers of 2020 and 2021, and the road from that very first lockdown has certainly felt like a long one. However, with restrictions easing and the proper precautions in place, this year is well on its way to pulling an absolute showstopper out of the bag, and Cornwall is right there amongst it all. From local celebrations of food and culture to one of the biggest music festivals in the UK, we’d like to take you on a journey through the light strung trees to some of our favourite Cornish festivals as the sun comes up on the summer of 2022. Home to a wealth of cultural arts and a fiercely proud heritage, here in Cornwall we love to celebrate our local traditions and histories, and the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival is an excellent example of how we like to showcase local talent whilst welcoming friends from all over the world in celebration. Founded in 2003 with a mission to keep the history of the sea and the days of sail alive, the cobbled streets of Falmouth’s historic town will once again find themselves filled with the rousing sound of sea shanties, songs of the sea and Cornish songs, all performed live throughout the weekend. Spread across from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th June, and featuring pop-up bars and music stages throughout Falmouth town, you’ll find shanty groups drawn from across the UK, Brittany, Holland, Spain, Canada and Ireland who’ve come together in celebration of all things nautical.

On the north coast of Cornwall you’ll find another Cornish town that plays host to an annual celebration of art, food and music; the Rock Oyster Festival. Set in the stunning grounds of Dinham House, and overlooking the Camel Estuary, this festival celebrates one local delicacy in particular, as the name suggests. Each year thousands of oysters are eaten as visitors and locals alike celebrate the famous quality of Cornish seafood. With cookery demonstrations, children’s entertainment and even a ‘shucking’ (oyster shell opening) competition, taking place from 29th to 31st July, this year’s events are hosted by Jack Stein, who has gathered famed foodie names like Rick Stein and Rosemary Shrager to share their culinary expertise. Meanwhile acts like Laura Mvula, Happy Mondays and Passenger are sure to have you up and dancing like it’s 2019. What could be a better way to mark the fifth year of The Great Estate festival than with a special four-day celebration over the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend? Self-proclaimed as ‘the most rambunctious garden fête’, this year’s celebrations took place once more at the charming Scorrier House, and boasted headline acts at Stage on the Green such as Manic Street Preachers, Black Grape and Ibibio Sound Machine, while fresh new talent made waves on the BBC Music introducing stage. While frequenters to the festival were sure to find familiar sounds, there was no shortage of new curiosities to happen upon this year, including the new Earth Roots world music stage.

With The Playground to entertain little ones, The Secret Gin Garden to sip Tarquin’s and enjoy the vibes, and the delightfully weird and wonderful Madame Wong’s House of Wrong, The Great Estate is a festival for all, and a fantastic way to kick off the summer of 2022. For any lover of Cornish cider, sun and good vibes, the Little Orchard Cider and Music Festival is certainly the festival for you. Located within the beautiful grounds of Healey's 150-year-old working cider farm in the rolling Cornish hills, where the famous Scrumpy Rattler and even cider whiskies are created, this will be three days of music, activities and a whole world of fun for the entire family. Taking place from 9th to 11th September, festival goers will be greeted by tractor and trailer and chauffeured through the farm to the festival area, where live music from local acts and international headliners will be keeping everyone entertained all day and night, while a selection of ciders from all over the UK can be tried alongside delicious street food. Famed for its wonderfully weird activities, events like Grandma’s Sofa Derby and the Rattler Olympics are sure to put a smile on anyone’s face, and the Silent Disco in the Orchard will keep the party going into the early hours.

Leopallooza is the festival that began all things Wyldes. Originally an attempt to get some friends together to listen to and play good music, now Leopallooza Festival is a multi-award-winning, grass roots music festival that celebrates the very best in new, up-and-coming and established bands, artists, DJs, and comedy, as well as hosting immersive theatre, family entertainment and a whole heap of surprises. Hosted in The Wyldes, a bespoke festival site which is nestled in a hidden, tree-filled Cornish valley, just a few miles from the sea, Leopallooza will take place from 22nd to 24th July, bringing with it live music, comedy and family entertainment for all, with acts like Metronomy, Sleaford Mods and Lianne La Havas to get those feet moving in the sunshine.

estled in the beautiful Cornish countryside near Bissoe, The Old Mill finds itself in a great position to make the most of close proximity to Cornwall’s cathedral city, as well as the harbour town of Falmouth and the rugged north coast of St Agnes. Grade II listed, the main house has bags of charm, with original character evident the moment you step across the threshold. The spacious kitchen is set out in a galley style, opening onto the courtyard and therefore making a fantastic entertainment space. Steps from the kitchen lead up to the former workings of the mill, making for a highly unusual dining area with a distinct wow-factor. With a total of five bedrooms in the main house, including a spacious master, the property is home to two additional twobedroom cottages, with planning permission for a third. The grounds are home to a large pond, which exudes vibes of Heligan and Trebah but within the realms of your own private garden, while a working leat speaks once again of the property’s working heritage. With plenty of spots in which to relax away from the madding crowd, plus a style of architecture and remnants of industry that remind you of a seemingly simpler time, not to mention the potential for holiday letting, The Old Mill is the kind of opportunity that’s becoming increasingly hard to find on Cornwall’s property market.

The accommodation comes tastefully decorated and capitalises on the cottage’s original features, from hardwood flooring underfoot to exposed timber beams in the ceiling. Downstairs, an open-plan kitchen/ dining room opens out onto the rear patio garden, which itself is perfect for al fresco dining, with a shed that’s useful for storing outdoor equipment, be it beach or barbeque gear! Dating back to the 18th century, this has to be one of Port Isaac’s most quintessential properties. Lovingly maintained and thoughtfully modernised, it currently serves as a successful holiday let, providing guests with the perfect place to retreat to after a day exploring the north coast and sampling the incredible food that has helped to put this unique destination on the map.

ased in Cornwall and founded by Giles Asker, a former senior executive within the housebuilding industry, Lantic Developments aims to help breathe life into your new home. It does so, by providing a complete array of services to help you undertake your property development, managing the entire process from either pre- or post-planning approval, all the way through to you moving into your new dream abode. Informed, honest, accurate and consistent with advice at every stage, from inception to completion, Lantic Developments is built on the understanding that a clientcentric approach is the only way to achieve success. They are advocates of the client throughout the entire process, and unrivalled in their levels of multidisciplinary industry experience. Giles has a deeply held belief that the primary objective of the development process should be complete customer satisfaction, both in terms of the journey and the finished product. Indeed, just like

a home, a good client relationship must be built on strong foundations, and Giles believes that this can only be achieved through open and honest communication; that only by adopting this policy will the journey be a success. It is on the basis of these beliefs that, in a previous industry role as Managing Director, Giles’ region achieved an average Net Promoter Score of 91%! Results such as this are only achieved through the implementation of both leadership and teamwork, and it is this passion and determination that lie at the beating heart of Lantic Developments. Their values of trust, honesty, passion and confidentiality, alongside the expertise gained from years in the industry, are what make building your dream home a reality.

For the Cornish, however, this beautiful, rugged, charming landscape runs deep through their blood. It is home in every sense of the word. Burrington Estates will pay tribute to this tradition by

building a new collection of 30 sustainable, and energy efficient luxury four-bedroom homes in the heart of its northernmost town. For further details, or to book an appointment, email maer.view@burringtonestates.com or call on 01872 890033.

A PASSION FOR

y t i l i b a n i a t s u s

Growing up in Newquay and witnessing the impact of discarded plastic proved to be a galvanising force for good for Oltco directors Johnny Pearce and Tom Stringer.

W

ith summer peeking through spring’s veil our sights turn seaward as we prepare to head to the beach along with visitors from out-of-county. It’s going to be a busy season! With such a beautiful coastline and a developed tourist infrastructure it means that Cornwall will see an influx of people this year. This means a pouring in of money to the county but at the same time, an increase in accompanying waste material that is at the penultimate stage in the cycle. Especially plastic – something that we are weaning our dependence upon but haven’t quite got there yet! With this prospect in mind, Oltco is keen to promote awareness this summer, for locals and tourists alike, of how this impacts our natural environment. Encouraging people to become ‘plastic aware’ is the team’s continuing motif, which manifests itself in the promotion of beach cleans to locals and visitors alike, thus helping to maintain the natural beauty of Cornwall’s beaches and coastline. This attitude has always informed Oltco's approach to business as well. Sustainability encapsulated within a sustainable product was something that led to the creation of two unique solutions – Recycle Bound and Recycle Base. The first of these is a resin solution that is made using a mix of stone and aggregates as well as recycled waste plastic. Developed in-house by its team of

technical experts, Recycle Bound is a world first, with the waste plastic used obtained from a dedicated plastic recycling point. It features a combination of plastic drink bottles, food packaging and straws and is an ideal solution for outdoor areas including driveways, patios, footpaths, balconies, terraces, courtyards and beer gardens. The emphasis is also upon longevity which means it is both durable as well as beautiful with a low-maintenance tenure. Recycle Base, meanwhile, is a ground reinforcement system which utilises stone and low-grade plastic, including waste ocean plastic. Low-grade plastic is difficult to recycle and is often incinerated, releasing CO2 into the atmosphere. Using this type of plastic ensures that it is recycled to prevent further CO2 emissions. Oltco has now recycled over 200 million plastic straws in Recycle Bound transformations across the UK and Channel Islands which, we’re sure you’ll agree, is an incredible achievement!

SHELTER

With a nod to the nautical, Sail Shades Direct provide a stunning option for anybody hoping to bring their garden vision to life.

I "

Our shades and pergolas cover lots of different applications JAMIE WATTS

"

n an increasingly busy and stressful world, having an outside space in which to relax and re-engage with nature can provide much-needed respite from an otherwise hectic lifestyle. This is the ethos behind Sail Shades Direct. The business was founded by Jamie Watts, who explains: “Back in 2012, when working as a sailmaker in the marine industry, I realised how quiet we became during the summer and wanted to do something to fill the time during the warmer months.” His creative mind eventually settled on the idea of using the same hardy materials that he was used to working with during his main occupation, only this time to create beautiful, bespoke shelters. As well as creating stunning outdoor shelters with designs and shapes that are perfectly suited to those awkward Cornish gardens, Jamie and his team can manufacture blinds for the inside of your house, as well as complete conservatories and garden buildings. “We have access to an excellent range of quality structural materials and retractable systems, with lots of technical fabrics sourced from specialist suppliers all around the world. These include woven polyester fabrics from the USA, PVC fabrics from France and mesh

products from Australia. What’s more, we deliberately avoid cheaper products as they tend not to last. “Our shades and pergolas cover lots of different applications,” he continues. “From small sails to provide shade in a garden, to large waterproof sails over pub and beer gardens; we can even do feature sails for indoor locations and pergolas with fabric roofs. Manufacturing here in Cornwall means we have so many potential applications.” So, what could this mean for you? If you’re among the many who have decided to rethink the way in which you use your garden, then there’s almost certainly a Sail Shade to suit your vision. Be it for a small family dining space or a full-blown outdoor kitchen, Jamie explains that their square or rectangular pergolas are perfect for such areas, providing shelter from the changeable Cornish elements and made from materials that celebrate the heritage of the county in which we love to live.

GOING LIVE! W

Unveiling the brandnew Westcountry Blinds website.

estcountry Blinds is delighted to have now ‘gone live’ on its brand-new website, opening up a world of new options for customers and clients and providing those outside of Cornwall the chance to benefit from the expertise of the company’s tried, tested and highly appraised in-house manufacturers. If you’ve worked with Westcountry Blinds before, fear not – David Tague and the team continue to strive to provide in-county customers with the very best supply and fit service; they’ve been doing it for more than 25 years and they certainly don’t intend to stop now! However, David explains: “What we haven’t been able to offer (until now) is a blinds ‘to go’ service. Ideal for those who are either out of county, or who already have a fitter lined up, we have named this new arm of the business Westcountry Blinds ‘To Go’ and now, via our online shop, home improvers can enjoy our in-house manufacturing expertise and three-year guarantee, without the need to be in Cornwall, and to either choose their own fitter or install the blinds themselves.” So, what’s available in the new online shop? It could be that you’re in search of a solution for bi-folding doors, or tilt-and-turn windows. If so, Duette Blind Tru Fit could be

just the solution, providing a drill-free option available in both Duette and Single Pleated fabrics, attached by two rails that adhere directly to the glazing and allowing you to operate from both the bottom up and top down. Or perhaps you have children or pets, and therefore need to avoid long, dangling cords to ensure the safety of curious kids (furry or not). If so, Duette Blind Smart Cord is the perfect solution, using a retractable cord mechanism that maintains a constant cord length, meaning there are never any long, dangling cords to get tangled up in and providing the added benefit of never detracting from the appearance of the shade. Perhaps you’re looking for a solution to make your blinds disappear and therefore not intrude on your new home’s aesthetic? If so, look no further than Blind Space – designed to disappear with incomparable attention to detail, concealing blinds in any type of window, gable or skylight. The hidden space inside the wall or ceiling can be prepared for manual or electric blinds and accessed for blind installation, even after construction work is completed. In terms of the blinds themselves, roller blinds are a classic choice for window dressings, being perhaps the most well-known

type of blind. Westcountry Blinds To Go have a beautiful range of roller blinds to choose from, many of which are compatible with Tru Fit, Smart Cord and Blind Space. Whichever blind and fabric you choose, the online shop even provides the option to have a free sample delivered, allowing you to test against the colour scheme of your home and ensure you’re 100% happy with your choice before you commit to purchasing the entire blind. Of course, as anybody who has embarked upon a home improvement project will agree, the world of blinds and window dressings presents an impressive range of options for different styles, budgets and problems. However, this can make knowing which solution and style is right for you a real head-scratcher! If this sounds familiar,

the new website dives into the various types of window dressings, from Venetian, to Roller, to Roman, exploring their various benefits and applications. Once you’ve settled on what you need, click through to the Measuring Guides and Media Centre, where DIY fitters can find helpful measuring guides for blinds and curtains, along with Case Studies showcasing the solutions that David and the team have been able to help customers with across Cornwall. There is also a dedicated Video page, providing helpful demos and instructional films, as well as a Download page that’s ideal for those in search of brochures, instructional PDFs and wiring diagrams for motorised blinds. Finally, for those who like to keep their fingers on the pulse of what’s hot and what’s not, Westcountry Blinds will be updating the website’s all-new News and Blog page with industry insights, trends and top tips for anybody in need of a window dressing overhaul. In short, whether you want to see how David and the team can help you with your project in Cornwall, or require a supply only service from a company that has, for over two decades, maintained a stellar reputation for exemplary made-to-measure blinds and curtains, wherever you are in the UK, be sure to head online and pay the new Westcountry Blinds website a visit.

The value of

PARTNERSHIP If you own a holiday home in or near Bude and are looking to make the best of it, then let us introduce you to Elite West Holidays.

O

wners of holiday homes in Cornwall will have noticed a significant up-tick in bookings in recent years, which is perhaps unsurprising. More and more UK holidaymakers are realising that with Cornwall on their doorstep, there’s little need to hop aboard a plane and fly their way across the globe to enjoy sun, sea and sand, and everything else that a classic holiday abroad brings with it. Cornwall’s culinary scene, for example, is up there with the finest in the UK (see what Jude Kereama has to say about it on page 70). For explorers, the dynamic coastlines of the north and south, not to mention the endless miles of rolling countryside in between, are paradise, and when you add to this the world-renowned gardens and attractions that Cornwall is home to – the Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan, and the Minack Theatre, to name just a few – it’s really no surprise that the Cornish staycation is proving so popular. With this in mind, demand for luxury self-catering breaks has never been higher, something the team at Elite West Holidays are acutely aware of. Specialising in exclusive private homes for groups of all sizes, Elite West Holidays are always at the end of a phone call and happy to discuss how they might be able to make your property work for you.

Operating with a superb, hand-selected portfolio of luxury properties in the north Cornwall area, at the core of the business is the understanding that, at the end of the day, it’s your property. “We never forget that,” says company Director, James. “Because we’re totally independent, we can be both nimble and flexible, tailoring our service to suit you.” As an owner, you can choose from a Bookings Only or Fully Managed service. The Fully Managed service includes quality housekeeping, laundry services and everything else you might need to offer an exceptional stay for your guests. However, if you have your own housekeeper and prefer to manage your property yourself, then the Bookings Only package could be right for you. “We are wholly focused on helping you to provide the best experience for your guests and thereby make the most of your holiday property,” says James. “This includes innovative property marketing, exceptional housekeeping, and all guest services and communication.” In short, all bases that you require covering will be, leaving you to enjoy the benefits of holiday home ownership in a way that suits your lifestyle.

So, what does a holiday here look like? After a bucket-and-spade day spent in the surf and sea, hiking along the stunning cliff paths, or dusting off the clubs for a cheeky 18 holes at one of the excellent local golf courses, you and yours can stop off at the hotel’s Surf Shack, rinsing off sandy toes before safely stowing away your surf boards and other equipment. Returning to your holiday-base, you’ll be glad you decided to stay at Polzeath Beach House. Each room is modern and stylish in design, with thoughtful additional touches that include luxurious cotton waffle bathrobes, Nespresso coffee machines and a minifridge. For families and larger groups, seaview, self-catering apartments are available, offering the privacy of a home from home, with open-plan living spaces, all with the added benefit of access to the hotel’s reception and concierge service.

THE scoop

DOGS

Ideas for you and your pooch, from vet care, to stays, to must-have accessories.

The hazards

of summer

Exploring with our canine companions often leads to long days out, so ensure you’re prepared by taking plenty of drinking water and scheduling regular stops. Never leave your dog in a hot car; over-heating can easily occur when playing on the beach or at home in the garden, with signs including excessive drooling, dizziness, sticky gums and vomiting. If you have any concerns at all, be sure to call your vet. At this time of year, adders can be seen basking in the sun. If disturbed, they may bite in self-defence, resulting in dark, painful swellings. If bitten, seek immediate veterinary assistance, but first stay calm and, if possible, carry your dog back to the

car to reduce the spread of venom around their body. Dedicated and professional, Kernow Veterinary Group offer animal owners a comprehensive service, providing 24-hour nursing care and therefore ensuring your peace of mind. For more information call 01208 872254 or visit www.kernowvetgroup.com

Discover a pooch’s paradise “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” Anybody who shares their life with a dog will surely agree with this quote from Roger Caras; the team at Kilminorth Cottages certainly do! For this reason, four-legged friends are at the heart of everything Kilminorth has to offer, so much so that it’s extremely proud to now be an award-winning dog-friendly business, as confirmed by their Silver Award at the recent Cornwall Tourism Awards. From the little doggy welcome packs awaiting your arrival, to the extensive on-site amenities, your pooch is sure to feel right at home during your stay at Kilminorth. What’s more,

It’s got to be

‘pawty’ time!

Pooches love a good party as much as the rest of us, which is why A Doggy Day Out are excited to announce two interactive fun days out for humans and hounds this summer. On Saturday 2nd July, the team will bring the ‘Doggy Summer Paw-ty’ to Scorrier House, Redruth, then on Sunday 14th August, the ‘Doggy Summer Fete’ to the Royal Cornwall Showground!

the site lies just moments from a wealth of beautiful walking spots, beaches and woodland, where your canine companion can run to their heart’s content before returning together to your comfortable cottage for the evening.

Created for dogs and well-behaved owners by the dog-mad team from A Doggy Day Out, there’ll be a range of activities, dog products and services, as well as a chance to learn more about your best four-legged friend’s health and wellbeing. All of this includes a Doggy Party, Dog Shows, Have-a-Go Agility, Have-a-Go Hoopers, Canine Olympics, a ‘Paws Got Talent’ show, plus a seminar zone, street food and bar, a doggy café, and lots more. Stay prepared with Adder Packs When out wandering the dunes and moors with our four-legged pals, the last thing we expect to come across is a startled adder. With adder bites in dogs on the rise, it could pay to be prepared whenever out walking with your furry friend. All adder bites require urgent veterinary treatment, but your immediate actions, should the worst happen, can make all the difference to your dog’s recovery. The Adder Pack provides you with all the necessary information and equipment needed

to administer this immediate first aid. There is also a clear and concise ‘what to do’ guide to help you through the period between the time of the bite and your arrival at the vets. 6 OF THE BEST...

A small selection of our favourites as we celebrate dog-friendly hospitality in Cornwall.

Best of both worlds

Dogs love Wooda!

Hele Barton Holiday Cottages

Wooda Farm Holiday Park

If you can’t decide between the coast and the countryside for your holiday this year, The Folly is the perfect solution. Down its own private lane, this stunning cottage is right in the heart of Hele Barton Farm near Bude. With amazing views in all directions, you’ll feel like you have the whole valley to yourself! Dogs will love the large garden, walks in the surrounding fields and dog-friendly beaches close by, while humans will relish the chance to spend evenings snuggled in front of the inglenook fireplace, or watching the sun set over the Atlantic from the hot tub.

Wooda Farm Holiday Park welcomes the entire family to stay, and that includes the fluffy, four-legged members! A true pooch’s paradise, Wooda has a puppy playfield for off-lead roaming, a dogfriendly woodland walk, plus the site’s incredible neighbouring beaches and the South West Coast Path, opening up a world of endless adventure. Return from your day’s explorations and wash muddy paws and salty fur in the dedicated dog shower, before returning to your accommodation, be it a camping pitch, a luxury lodge, self-catering cottage or holiday home – the choice is yours!

Relax in luxury Old Lanwarnick Cottages

Pooch friendly pitstop Old Inn Mullion

Old Lanwarnick’s six award-winning cottages are set in 34 acres of beautiful Cornish countryside and are only ten minutes from the beautiful quiet beaches and the old fishing towns of Looe and Polperro. The cottages accommodate up to eight guests, all with their own private, enclosed garden or patio. They provide a great haven to relax after a day’s exploring with the use of on-site facilities including the hot-tub, gym and gardens. All cottages are dog friendly and have a dedicated, fully fenced exercise area and heated dog wash.

Set in the picturesque village of Mullion on the Lizard peninsula, this traditional thatched pub has been providing a genial welcome to the weary traveller since the 16th century. The rooms are warm and comfortable and with a range of quality, locally sourced produce the chefs create a delicious range of meat and vegetarian dishes for you to enjoy in the bar. And the best part is that dogs can enjoy all of this too – including a doggie menu – so if you’re looking to refuel during your exploration of mainland Britain’s most southerly point with your furry friend in tow, this is the ideal place to do so.

Chynhale Barns

The Lemon Arms

If your dog could choose where to go on holiday, we think they would be highly likely to choose Chynhale Barns. With lovely secure gardens, zero restrictions on how many dogs you can bring and a fenced meadow great for doggy playtime and picnics, it’s truly a pooch’s paradise. Chynhale Barns haven’t forgotten the humans too with the addition of a new, amazing indoor heated swimming pool. Less than five minutes’ drive from Perranporth’s endless, sandy, dog-friendly beach and surrounded by acres of lush green Cornish countryside, Chynhale Barns is just perfect for an adventure with your hound!

Mylor’s hidden location makes it the perfect spot for a creekside walk. The peace and tranquillity of the area means it’s a haven for wildlife, so ideal for nature lovers looking to stretch their legs. One of our favourites is to walk from Mylor Bridge, along Mylor Creek and then around to Restronguet Weir and back. This lovely circular walk always works up an appetite and so we can recommend refuelling at the Lemon Arms. Their daily specials board complements a menu of great pub classics, local ales on tap and a dog-friendly beer garden!

Looking to immerse yourself in nature, but with all the lashings of a luxury stay? If so, look no further than Travellers Rest.

P

roviding guests with a great deal of flexibility and relaxation, whilst being immersed in the beautiful natural environment of Cornwall, it’s no wonder the popularity of glamping holidays is on the rise. At Travellers Rest, glamping pods are all double glazed with underfloor heating, a kitchenette and a bathroom with shower. Unlike with traditional camping, the pods are ready for you to move in and enjoy from the moment you arrive. It’s like having a hotel bedroom immersed in nature. Oh, and they’re also dog friendly! As a dog-friendly stay just moments from the South West Coast Path, this is the perfect base from which to explore the north coast with your furry friend in tow. But it’s also more than that. It’s a ‘stake in the ground’ by its owners, who are dedicated to becoming as sustainable as possible in the way they do business. “We have a number of plans in place to evolve our sustainable practises and to futureproof our business by 2025,” explains Travellers Rest owner, Martin Watts. “We are exploring the use of wind and solar to supply the pub with the energy we need to run the equipment; we’ll be removing any equipment that requires fossil fuels, and we’ve also addressed our supply chain to ensure our suppliers meet our high standards.” Martin and team are also keen to ‘give back’ to the land and community, which

is why they decided to introduce a Wildlife Pond, which is really starting to mature. “We often see dragonflies circling and laying larvae, as well as a whole host of insects and local inhabitants of the land using the pond as a watering hole.” These include starlings, who are back nesting, says Martin. “Soon we will see their young being taught how to scoop up water in their beaks, which is really enjoyable to see!” Whether you spend your day exploring the coastline, or soaking up the stunning surroundings of the Travellers Rest grounds, what better way to round it off than with a meal at the Travellers Rest Inn? Serving fresh, local ingredients wherever possible and providing their own unique versions of great pub classics, as well as making the most of freshly caught fish and providing a great range of gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options, the menus change with the season, but the ethos remains the same: to offer guests a true taste of Cornwall.

WELCOME! Pamper your pooch with a stay at one of the county’s most dog-friendly hotels.

W

hen it comes to dog-friendly luxury hotels in Cornwall, Talland Bay Hotel is heads and tails above the rest. The team at this boutique property appreciate that dogs are part of the family, and nothing is too much trouble for four-legged guests. What better excuse to pamper your pet than with the new canine cupcake, whipped up with an oat-based sponge and mascarpone topping. The latest addition to the award-winning menu is being served on a complimentary basis to any pups marking a birthday. Of course, it doesn’t have to be a special occasion to spoil your best friend; the doggy cupcakes are available to purchase on request, which means no-one need miss out when booking afternoon tea. For hotel guests, the canine menu also includes handmade dog treats as well as fresh, locally sourced chicken at dinner time and Kittows Butchers’ sausages for breakfast. Dogs are invited to dine with owners in the conservatory restaurant and can look forward to receiving a Pooch Pamper Pack on arrival, with a dog blanket, bowls and feeding mat.

As well as the beautiful hotel gardens, they’ll love going for strolls along the South West Coast Path, which meanders past the hotel. There’s also the year-round dog friendly Talland Bay beach at the bottom of the lane. Guests can take advantage of printouts of local walks and a list of dogfriendly attractions on request, too. There are doggy days out aplenty to plan, from the Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan, to boat trips and beach days. When it comes to retiring after a hard day’s exploring, there is a wide range of dog-friendly accommodation to choose from at Talland Bay Hotel. Whether you opt for a classic or sea view room, or one of the delightful garden suites with direct access to the grounds, you can stay with your dog in whichever room you prefer.

fter many years of being known for buckets, spades, and bad food, Cornwall is now positioned as the best county on the UK foodie scene. Anyone who has visited recently will know that top restaurants and cafés can be found all over the north and south coasts. This, in turn, has led to a boost for hospitality and tourism. Rick Stein helped put Cornwall on the international stage and he has now been joined by a whole host of talented chefs, producers and natural ingredients that have cemented our place on the world foodie map. Everyone comes down to Cornwall looking forward to a fish supper, wholesome garden produce, and the incredible farmers and butchers here, like Phillip Warrens. And don’t forget the hunt for the best pasty…my personal favourites are Ann’s! As a chef/restaurateur, I am always proud of what we can produce in this county. With the huge amount of talented and passionate chefs that we seem to possess, we are attracting more and more foodie followers that are eager to come and fill our restaurants, accommodation, attractions and shops. Hospitality itself is a huge employer in Cornwall, and is a major contributor to the Cornish economy. As we look to the future, I am hoping that we can attract more people to join our industry, as it is something I am completely passionate about. I still go to work with a smile on my face and look forward to all the challenges that may come my way on a daily basis! Most of all, I look forward to cooking food that I love and hanging out with my staff. Gone are the days of too long hours and being poorly treated. Also gone, are the days of nasty chefs. Tasty staff meals and staff drinks help to boost morale and, at least at Kota, we like to think we create a lovely working space in which all our employees feel that they can thrive and learn. Once upon a time, it was important for young budding chefs to move to the ‘big smoke’ of London to gain credentials on their CVs. Nowadays, there is a plethora of high-classed kitchens and chefs to work with in Cornwall, which means you don’t need to do that

anymore. I do think it is important to travel and dine in different cities and countries, simply because it allows you to gain a better understanding of food, but the need to move from the county is not so important. Looking to the future of food in Cornwall and it’s hard to put a finger exactly on what that might look like – food trends come and go – but I really do believe that the produce of this great county should dictate what we have on our menus. And with the rising costs of bills affecting us all, ensuring that we draw on local, seasonal ingredients is going to be essential in keeping costs down. In terms of the menus themselves, we have seen a huge rise in the cost of proteins, and I can only see that we will all eat less protein than we used to. I believe, firmly, that it is better to have a small portion of quality meat than to have a huge chunk poorly farmed with bad practises. There will also be a rise of vegetarian diners, which we have already experienced in our own restaurants. This is never a problem for us, and we even offer nine-course vegan menus if people book 24 hours in advance. Unfortunately, hospitality has taken a real hit in recent times, in part due to the lack of enthusiastic staff who have never been more important, but also due to rising food prices, energy hikes and other overheads. I am, however, confident that many of us can ride these bad times and keep going in ensuring that Cornwall will continue to lead the way as the top foodie county. As our mainstay industry, it is imperative here in Cornwall that we continue to draw tourists in to our county.

As a chef/restaurateur, I am always proud of what we can produce in this county...

spirit of THE

INNOVATION

Since conceptualising the original idea of opening a small distillery during a walk along Rock beach, demand for Angie and George’s Cornish Rock Gin has soared.

M

ade from the most natural products, many of which are found right here in Cornwall, along with Cornish spring water, Cornish Rock Gins are all sugar free and maintain a classic dry taste with subtle flavours and undertones. And at a time that the provenance of the food and drink with which we line our cupboards has never been more important, it’s perhaps unsurprising that demand for a true Cornish spirit has only continued to rise. Setting out to produce a gin that was clean and pure, Cornish Rock Gin – at the Rock Distillery – now make eight fabulous gins, all with the freshest and best botanicals possible. More recently, Angie, George and the team have also unveiled a new bottle design, making the presentation of their liquid wares even more of an event. The bottles even match the exotic Rock Gin glasses, which themselves are perfectly designed to enjoy a Rock Gin ‘perfect serve’. But it’s not all about the gin. Cornish Rock Gin have also unveiled a range of rums, for which the sugar cane base comes from the Caribbean, with other ingredients sourced from as close to Cornwall as possible. The base is re-distilled here in the Duchy with the addition of some exciting flavours and now, matching the range of gins, there are eight fantastic Cornish rums to boot, all made from the purest ingredients and each offering a smooth taste, with flavours such as fresh coconut, vanilla, mango and passionfruit, English cherries, even Cornish saffron! Angie and George are passionate about their products and love to spread the word, with tempting taster shots. “We try to get out there to as many people as possible. So, as well as being an online retailer, we attend many markets and events so that people can come and taste our products at their leisure. Here in Cornwall, you will find us at Bude Market every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. We are in Tintagel (next to the Old Post Office) every Tuesday and Saturday. You

can also find us at Falmouth Market on the Moor every Saturday,” explains Angie. “We also have a small retail and tasting space in Port Isaac, plus we are at Port Isaac market every first Sunday of the month. If you can’t get to any of those locations then we also have a small retail shop and tasting station down in the Allen Valley just off the A39.”

Waiting for the Boats (detail) by Walter Langley Born in Birmingham, Walter Langley is known as the ‘pioneer of the Newlyn School’, being the first of the Newlyn School artists to settle in the village. Like many of his fellow Newlyn artists, he spent time in Brittany and Holland before settling in Cornwall. Although Langley was an accomplished painter in oils, he mainly painted in watercolour, often on a large scale.

He portrayed scenes of everyday life in a small fishing village, highlighting the hardships and tragedies that were commonplace. The exhibition, ‘Walter Langley: Painting Between the Tides’, runs until 1st October.

4. CHLOE WOODS ARTIST Misty Morning at Mylor by Chloe Woods

A crisp morning at Mylor Creek, a delicate layer of mist lifted to reveal acid green reflections of the hillside in the water and the sunlight catching the prow of the boat; the inspiration for mixed media painting ‘Misty Morning at Mylor’. Chloe most enjoys capturing the vivid colours and textures of the Cornish coastline. Using an exciting range of mediums (acrylic paint, collage, charcoal and oil pastels), Chloe makes confident marks that will bring the colours of Cornwall into your home. 07803 724 297 | www.chloewoods.co.uk

8. DR MARTÍN RASKOVSKY

Lost in the woods by Dr Martín Raskovsky Dr. Martín Raskovsky’s ‘Lost in the Woods’ portrays an enchanted forest – peaceful and untouched by the commotion of everyday city life. Colossal trees and verdant foliage is divided by a mystical trajectory that meanders through the wood in a spellbinding and intense shade of deep purple. Dr. Raskovsky creates an enticing illusion of depth in this entrancing woodland, which provokes a strong sense of mystery and intrigue. His skilled use of perspective and positioning of the vanishing point makes the pathway appear never ending, with an obscure culmination that suggests a distant uncharted world. mail@martinr.com | martinraskovsky | www.martinr.com

SUSTAINABLE A calm retail space in Newquay is doing away with ‘fast fashion’ and instead curating products that are made to last a lifetime.

A

style

clothing, accessories and lifestyle boutique based in the new Duchy development of Nansledan, Newquay, &KIN opened in December last year. The store brings beachy, California vibes to the north Cornish coast, stocking brands that bring with them high ethical and sustainable standards. “Our motto,” explains shop owner, Lottie, “is ‘We stock brands who give a damn!’” Originally launching as an online shop during the chaos of the pandemic in January 2021, lockdowns and being furloughed allowed Lottie the time to focus on her lifelong dream of bringing her chosen, amazing brands from Australia, America and Europe, to Cornish shores. “These cult brands all have beautiful values and are so special that you won’t find them anywhere else in the UK.” Having seen amazing success online, and having received consistent feedback that ‘you need to have a shop!’ during her summer pop-ups, Lottie decided it was time to look seriously into bricks and mortar. At the time, she held a part-time position at Teylu Trading, another beautiful shop in Nansledan. Her friend and boss, Lizzy, who owns Teylu, recommended the new units being built across the road, and by the time December had rolled around, the &KIN store was open! “I wanted to create a calm space in which healthy, considered purchases could be made,” says Lottie. “Purchases that would mean buying less, but buying better; investing in quality items that will last a lifetime.”

Pay a visit now, and you’ll find wares from brands that include Girl & The Sun, an Australian label specialising in pretty, feminine, floaty, boho style; Lacausa, an American brand producing basic staples, workwear style, and classic silhouettes; Find Me Now, another American label manufacturing edgy, colourful, fun and cute clothing; as well as other more local, Cornish makers. Among these are Porthleven based Hand & Palm, and St Ives artist, Roam Slow Studio, whose prints are proving incredibly popular. Looking to the summer ahead, and Lottie is excited to have been approached by Boardmasters to be part of the festival’s new Cornish Market. Here, you’ll find an amazing array of small Cornish businesses displaying their wares. “We love this festival,” says Lottie, “and can’t wait to meet some new customers and hopefully some of our amazing regulars, too. You’ll be able to shop a selection of festival attire from our favourite brands, as well as beauty products and some lovely lifestyle items.”

urrently small companies meeting two of the following requirements – an annual turnover of less than £10.2m, a balance sheet total that is no more than £5.1 million, or employing less than 50 people – can take advantage of the ability to file filleted or abridged accounts, allowing them to reduce the amount of detail in their annual submission to Companies House. One of the main elements that will be subject to change will be the profit and loss account, and related notes. Many would think of a company’s profit and loss information as being sensitive information that they would not like in the public domain. However, under these changes this information will now be made publicly available. A planned overhaul of filing requirements at Companies House, with a view to increasing transparency in annual filings, means that shortened forms of accounts submitted to Companies House will no longer be acceptable and all companies will have to file a profit and loss account as well as a balance sheet. Micro-entities meeting two of the following criteria – an annual turnover of less than £632,000, £316,000 or less on the balance sheet, or employing less than 10 people – will retain the exemption from filing a directors’ report outlining the financial state of the company. But small companies now have to file one, which at the moment is not currently required. Many shareholders in limited companies have historically relied on the ability to file reduced information at Companies House (using abridged or filleted accounts), reducing the amount of information available to the public. These changes have largely gone unnoticed but are sizeable alterations and will impact upon a huge number of businesses structured as limited companies. For some, they will raise the question as to whether shareholders want to continue trading as a limited company, and should be a further consideration for those who are considering trading as a limited company. Why the changes? These changes have been announced as part of the Economic Crime Bill, with the government looking to tackle global economic crime, improve corporate transparency and drive confidence in the UK economy. Evidence has suggested that filleted and micro-entity filing is of little value as it does not contain sufficient information to give a true and fair view of the financial position of a company. It is also very simple to file microentity accounts at Companies House, regardless of whether the company is eligible to do so. This has also meant that historically micro-entity companies have been attractive to fraudsters. The increase in information available at Companies House will also make it easier for creditors and stakeholders to make informed decisions when reviewing company information.

Other changes Dormant companies will be required to file an eligibility statement. Anyone setting up, running, owning or controlling a company in the UK will need to verify their identity with Companies House or have registered their identity with an anti-money laundering supervised third party agent. Companies House will have increased authority to investigate and challenge suspicious information and inform security agencies of potential wrongdoing, and only entities registered in the UK will be eligible for corporate directorships, meaning that company agents from overseas will no longer be able to create companies in the UK. As Companies House aims to become fully digital, companies will have to file digitally tagged accounts, using the Inline eXtensible Business Reporting Language (iXBRL) format – a type of computer language. Companies House will reject accounts that are not in this format. Currently, accounts have to be filed in this way at HM Revenue & Customs, and therefore for most companies this will not be a significant issue. At this stage, filing deadlines (currently nine months after the year end for private limited companies) are not due to be shortened, however, legislation will be introduced to facilitate future changes. Whilst there is no confirmed date for the introduction of these changes, and it could be some time until they are introduced, we would encourage company directors and shareholders to discuss any potential implications with their accountant.
