Cornwall continues to be an internationally respected area for fine art with some of the best painters, sculptors and craftspeople in the country. So along with Mercedes Smith from Fine Art Communications, we showcase three of the very best new artists on the Cornish art scene. Continuing the arts theme there are our gallery pages and we talk to Master Carpenter Ben Harris about his work working with wood.

I had the pleasure of meeting the inspirational Shaun Pascoe founder of Turn to Starboard, which uses sail training to support Armed Forces personnel affected by military operations. And on a lighter note I talked to Al and Keith, MD and FD respectively, about the continued success of Cornwall Airport Newquay. We pop into Constantine Stores, one of our favourite liquor stores, for some festive cheer and a quick tasting! We have plenty of ideas for home improvements, gorgeous properties for sale and others to holiday in; plus some ideas for a dog friendly break on the Isles of Scilly. We also include everything from our restaurant reviews to money advice from the experts. And for the ultimate gift for a loved one (and you!), how about hand feeding treats to the iconic (and extremely cute) Madagascan ring-tailed lemurs at Newquay Zoo! Definitely on my wish list for 2016. So on a wet and windy Cornish day, sit back, relax and dream up some new ideas for spring!

location really doesn’t get more idyllic than Lusty Glaze, a stunning, privately owned sandy cove in Newquay overlooking the dramatic Atlantic ocean. After a stroll along the golden sand or a day splashing in the waves, cap it off by booking at Lusty Glaze Beach restaurant, open seven days a week, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The cove makes a beautiful natural amphitheatre, celebrated for its popular summer music programme but it’s an equally welcoming venue over Christmas too, with two wood burners and a gorgeous set menu for large parties or an a la carte winter menu offering plenty of choice for smaller groups.

A new phase for Bolitho School

Fish from the Ferryboat

Bolitho School, a non-selective co-educational independent day school in Penzance is entering into a new and exciting phase of its 116 years of delivering high-quality education in the Penwith area. The school caters for nursery and preparatory pupils (3 months to 13 years old), and will be working in close partnership with Truro as a feeder for its senior school.

The Ferryboat Inn, perched on the banks of the Helford River, is a gorgeous pub dating back to the 16th century, in a truly stunning location. As you might expect from a riverside eatery sitting just above the oyster beds, The Ferryboat serves delicious fresh fish and seafood on its evervaried seasonal menu.

At Bolitho School, the staff ensure that every child is guided and supported, encouraged and enabled to take every opportunity to explore, learn, thrive and excel as an individual. The school teaches foreign languages to children from reception upwards. This is taught by language specialists, and introduces pupils from an early age to the whole cultural atmosphere of the country and its people. Its ‘Learning Outside the Classroom’ programme, focuses not only on what we learn, but how and where we learn. “We also recognise the importance of creativity and place great value on the Arts in education”, explains Headteacher Nicola Hemsley. “We invite parents to join us for a tour and children to spend a ‘taster’ day with us.” Entry into the school can be at any time; you do not have to wait until the start of a new term. www.bolithoschool.co.uk

Chef Robert Bunny shares one of his current favourites with us: whole salt and seaweed baked pollock from the Helford River with sprouts, Durgan squash, chestnuts and sauce maltaise. Robert adopts a classic Spanish technique to lock all the flavour within the fish, coating it in a crust of Cornish sea salt and seaweed. “We get an abundance of squash and sprouts from the local allotments”, says Robert. “We use baby or misshaped squash and they give a sweetness to the dish to accompany the pollock.” Quickly blanching the sprouts and roasting with butter gives a nice charred, nutty flavour. Chestnuts, are in everyone’s cupboards this time of year, provide a nice texture and complement the squash. Robert continues: “For me the sauce maltaise, which is a blood orange hollandaise, just adds a gentle creaminess to tie the dish together, while presenting a little acidity to cut through and lift all the flavours.” 01326 250625 www.thewrightbrothers.co.uk

The perfect escape Ta Mill is a secluded rural hideaway of luxury self catering cottages and detached lodges in north Cornwall. With accommodation for up to 60, Ta Mill offers a fantastic countryside venue for your dream wedding. You can get married, celebrate and share this beautiful setting with up to 140 guests on your wedding day. Situated on the fringes of Bodmin Moor, yet only seven miles from the stunning north Cornish coast, you can enjoy the quiet ambiance on site and explore the beautiful coastline and beaches nearby. During your stay you can take a stroll along the nature trail, relax in the superb hot tub or take a swim in the Swim Spa. An idyllic place to unwind. Call Helen on 07778 961819 www.tamill.co.uk

CONTEMPORARY S

Great British art is right here, right now. We profile three of the very best new names on the Cornish art scene for 2016.

ince the early 19th century Cornwall has both inspired and nurtured British art and craft. In the summer of 1811, the great Joseph Mallord William Turner toured the Cornish coast, making watercolour studies for a series of engravings titled ‘Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England’. In the late 19th and early 20th century the rise of the Newlyn School and the St Ives School painters established west Cornwall as one of Europe’s foremost art colonies. At the turn of the century, the Newlyn Copper Works were established at a time when the British Arts and Crafts movement was emerging, and was producing work to such a high standard it was exhibited at the Albert Hall. In 1920 Bernard Leach and Japanese potter Shoji Hamada established what was to become one of the most influential potteries in the world here, and in the middle of the 20th century, St Ives became the epicentre of British Modernist

art, thanks to the extraordinary work of artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon and Bryan Wynter. In the late 20th century, Falmouth emerged as leading centre for automata, beginning with the work of maker Peter Markey and gallery owner Sue Jackson’s Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, and in the early 1990s perhaps the world’s most important public art institution, Tate, considered the area of such artistic importance it established a gallery here, in St Ives. Cornwall continues to be an internationally respected area for fine art and has a strong art economy that boasts some of the best painters, sculptors and craftspeople in the country. Brilliant new artists are emerging every year, each of them responding in their own way to the landscape and the history of this wonderful place. Here are just three of the very best new artists on the Cornish art scene.

words by:

Mercedes Smit h THE SCULPTOR

Shelley Anderson

Born and bred in the industrial fishing port of Newlyn and raised amongst the rock pools of west Cornwall, you might expect Shelley Anderson to become the fine fisherman he is, but not necessarily a talented master craftsman and fine-art bronze sculptor as well. With a passion for diving and spearfishing and a degree in Silversmithing and Metal Fabrication from Falmouth University, Anderson’s work is the embodiment of both Newlyn’s historic maritime culture and prestigious metalworking heritage. Trained under Michael Johnson of the aforementioned

Newlyn Copper Works, Anderson combines traditional metalworking skills with innovative techniques to create ferociously beautiful sculptures of the sea creatures which define his passion for the landscape he was raised in. “When I was young my dad told me that if I stayed in Cornwall I would have to be hard working and creative to get by”, says Shelley. “I took this literally and so have been able to stay here and carve out a living for myself doing what I love, surrounded by the people I love. Inspiration for me lies in the sea, and spearfishing is my way

of exploring the Cornish coast. I hold my breath, plunge to the depths, and the wildlife dart away into their hiding places. But if I stay still long enough creatures come back out of the darkness and in turn attract larger, predatory fish – bass hopefully - which will provide me both with dinner and inspiration for my work.” Shelley’s experience at the Copper Works has honed his practical skills, and over six years he and Michael have worked on a string of impressive commissions, the largest of these being an acrotarion, a major decorative roof feature for the new £19

million lecture hall at Eton College. “The greatest boost to my career has been working alongside Michael Johnson at the Newlyn Copper Works. His encouragement, expertise and brilliant character have been invaluable to me. I’ve been privileged in the opportunities I’ve had and hope to make my young son Arlo proud of me.”

THE ARTIST CRAFTSMAN

Robert Braybrooks

é ABOVE Robert at Mounts Bay ê BELOW Three Oystercatchers, Tresco ê BOTTOM St Ives î BOTTOM RIGHT Carn Near Quay, Tresco

Robert Braybrooks’ landscape works present themselves as a kind of painting, but his unique approach to materials make them closer in many respects to applied design. Crafted from beautifully detailed, handcut layers of birchwood set against richly coloured, painted surfaces they combine a designer’s technical precision with the sensitive line of the sketchbook artist. Capturing the essential detail of the Cornish landscape, he uses contrasting colour and simplicity of line to express the shape and perspective of the sweeping coastline and unique wildlife of west Cornwall. Trained originally in mechanical engineering, he began his career as a design engineer and then teacher. Now living and working near Bone Valley outside Penzance, he uses his design knowledge and practical skills to make striking images of this beautiful area. “My work is inspired by simple elements within the landscape: the outline of rocky headlands, the silhouettes of birds flying past or wading at the edge of the water. I am always looking for lines and shapes in

the landscape around me. My background in design has led me to work with some less conventional art materials. Birch has a lasting, vibrant quality with a beautiful grain that emulates the textures of sea and sky. Its robustness enables compositions to feature the delicate details of plants, bird plumage and landscape.” Having only recently embarked on life as a full time artist, his work is gaining a following from as far west as the Scillies and all the way east to London. “Artists here are all making their mark in different ways, and championing the rural beauty and the creative talent of this area. There’s a wealth of galleries and collections nationwide that celebrate Cornwall’s wild spaces, and when I make a piece I am hoping to capture a moment, to make a record of an experience or wildlife encounter in the landscape. One of the biggest joys of making artwork inspired by the Cornish landscape is seeing someone in a gallery hundreds of miles away respond to it. Cornwall connects people, it’s a special place.”

THE AUTOMATA ARTIST

Jack Stiling

Jack Stiling, a recent graduate of Falmouth University’s Contemporary Crafts degree, is the new generation in a line of internationally respected automata artists out of Falmouth and his unique talent has earned him a first ever exhibition at one of the country’s most important contemporary craft galleries, the New Craftsman St Ives, this December. The wonderful world of automata art, which is based on intricately constructed, moving mechanical figures or devices which revolve around the act of storytelling, is a field with a prestigious history and has a dedicated following of serious collectors. Inspired by classic literature and campfire fables, Stiling’s fantastical objects astonish and entertain, drawing the viewer into a world of marvellous mechanisms. “I grew up in a family of mechanics, frequently visiting steam fairs and train

stations, and became fascinated with bygone engineering that was built to last. When I was studying, being part of the Falmouth automata scene meant that I was surrounded by good ideas. I was lucky enough to work with a couple of established automata artists here, and those experiences were pretty instrumental. Automata, for me, strikes a happy medium between engineering and craft, and that gives me a lot of creative scope. I have a passion for complicated problems. I take an initial idea, then have fun thinking of a hundred ways to make it possible. Automata are a kind of illusion, a magic trick, but the best part is that by revealing the workings of a piece, people become even more astonished.” Since his graduation Jack has created work for the National Trust and Plymouth Museum and regularly shares his considerable skill with the local community, taking part in events such as Truro’s City of Lights parade, teaching willow work and lantern making to schoolchildren. “I’d like to think automata has the power to bring art and craft back into the everyday, and I'd love to get more people interested in making their own stuff. Automata are complicated things to make, but easy things to enjoy, and that's what’s most important for me.”

Paris meets Penzance in this iconic painting of the stormy Promenade. Although he made Penzance his home, Norman Garstin was an Irish painter who had trained in France and was a great admirer of the Impressionist artist Manet. This, and other great works by the Newlyn School of artists, can be seen at Penlee House Gallery.

The Craft Kiln (Cornish crafts), Sail Loft Emporium (antiques and collectables) and Cscape Art are part of The Old Workshop, next to the main Charlestown car park. Many originals, prints and cards by artist Sarah Blakey, and photographer Mick Blakey available at the gallery. See website for winter opening hours.

he picturesque south facing harbour village of St Mawes has to be one of the most desirable and exclusive places to live in Cornwall. Situated on the east side of the Fal Estuary it has a unique charm and retains a wonderful feeling of peace and tranquillity, yet with plenty of activity out on the water. It has good road links across the beautiful unspoilt countryside of the Roseland Peninsula, and regular ferries to the university town of Falmouth and the King Harry Ferry links it to the cathedral city of Truro. The house is a stone’s throw from the small harbour, beaches, sailing club, pubs and restaurants including Olga Polizzi’s Hotel Tresanton; The Moorings has a truly worldclass setting. This charming mid-terrace Victorian home has been tastefully restored to an extremely high standard, there is a large sitting room with two fireplaces and big bay window with views out to sea. At the heart of the house is a fabulous extended kitchen-dining room with island and granite worktops. There is a utility room and modern ‘wet room’ downstairs.

Three bedrooms are on the first floor with a family bathroom, while a wonderful en-suite bedroom on the second floor has French doors out on to the roof with more sweeping views out over the harbour. There is a small garden at the front of the house just perfect for morning coffee. Then immediately across the narrow road is a gorgeous, south facing, terraced garden, with a level lawn area and sun terrace for al fresco dining and watching the traditional Falmouth working boats get ready to race. Steps lead down to a lower terrace directly over the water and then on down to the foreshore, with your very own licensed mooring. Just perfect!

A grand opening Award-winning photographer Carla Regler opens a new gallery in Porthleven.

A

s I catch up with Porthleven photographer Carla Regler, she’s on her way to the airport, shortly to fly out to Iceland to capture the northern lights on film. But, as if this wasn’t enough, she has also just opened a second new gallery in Porthleven. This complements Carla’s existing gallery in the picturesque harbour village, above the much-loved kitchen-café, Seadrift, which she runs with her partner and Head Chef, Chris. In fact the gallery – still going strong – has proved so popular that Carla needed even more room to showcase her work. It also gives her the opportunity to champion other artists and photography she admires, including some fascinating vintage shots from yesteryear.

Carla explains: “We were very lucky to come across another space in Porthleven after the photography took off so well above the café.” The new gallery is located on Chapel Terrace, off one of the side streets to Porthleven’s Harbour, just around the corner from Seadrift – almost literally attached to the other side! “We’d love you to come and have a look”, says Carla. It has been a real team effort with family and friends helping out to get the new gallery open. “It really has been a challenge to turn this around in three weeks and open it on the day I fly out to Iceland!” Carla says. The new gallery stocks a range of photographic items for sale, from stunning prints, frames and canvases, to photo mugs, clocks and coasters – ideal for gifts all year round! Here you’ll find wonderful imagery from Porthleven and the local areas, as well as images from Carla’s travels. Several times a year, Carla jets off around the world, running workshops both for herself and Light & Land (www.lightandland.co.uk). If you’ve been inspired by Carla’s work and would like to try your hand at photography too, Carla runs popular half-day workshops in Cornwall throughout the year, so take a look at her website for more details.

ou may have noticed the beautiful Spirit of Falmouth, a 91ft traditional Pilot Schooner, out on the water but not known that it is owned by Turn to Starboard, a Cornish charity with a national remit to work with veterans, who have been affected by military operations, helping to get them back on track with their lives. I went to meet its founder and chief executive, Shaun Pascoe who knows first hand what it’s like trying to readjust to ‘normal’ life after serving in a war zone.

Background Shaun joined the Air Force in 1997 and went on to become Commander of the Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT): small teams of highly trained medics who fly out to

ê BELOW Shaun is highly decorated

words by:

Mandy Milano the frontline in Chinooks to rescue and treat medical emergencies. The hugely personable Shaun explains, “Apache helicopters were used to clear the ground ahead of us… but the Chinook is much faster so, to get to the wounded as quickly as we could, we often arrived first with no cover whatsoever… that certainly concentrates the brain!” Shaun is extremely candid about his experience and it’s obvious why he is such a popular speaker, being invited to talk all over the country. “I served in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and had four sorties to Afghanistan, with lots of small sorties in between. It was after my second posting that I started to find things really difficult, feeling lost; I was displaying all the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).”

The charity During his last year in service Shaun did the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore course and Cruising Instructor. “Within two weeks of sailing I just started to feel in a better place;” says Shaun. So he turned down a job with the NHS to concentrate on setting up Turn to Starboard. “I had an office at home and started to present to major charities, I just wanted to do the right thing!” It’s

testament to his determination and charm that he has all the major veterans’ charities on board, including Help for Heroes. He’s had tea with Prince Charles and the Prince’s Trust gave Spirit of Falmouth to the charity; there is an impressive list of trustees too, with Air Marshall Sir Dusty Miller KBE as Patron, and Stephen Dash, MD of Dash (South West) as Chairman. Large international companies like International Paints and the Yacht Company are also keen partners, Rustler Yachts are helping them with another boat hull and Dorian Smith from Tresco gives them a cottage on the island and hosts them on their training sails to the Isles of Scilly.

Why it works “Once you are on a boat you have to deal with things in a different way; a group of guys who don’t know each other but have had similar experiences. It’s all about attitude, values and behaviour.” Shaun explains. The charity offers veterans anything from a cup of coffee and a chat, a day out on a boat with their family, to the full Yachtmaster course and everything in-between. Shaun continues. “One young boy told me: my dad came back from Afghanistan then when we went sailing he really came back; he was laughing for the first time.”

Shaun has many such stories: another is of a veteran who hadn’t been outside his house for four years because of PTSD and who’s now doing his Yachtmaster. “Don’t get me wrong this is no magical alternative cure,” Shaun tells me, “we insist that our veterans fully engage with their treatment, but it definitely helps. And it is just the right thing to do!”

Time off There hasn’t been much time off while setting up the charity, but since discovering the solace of being at sea, it’s no surprise that Shaun has recently bought his own ketch to sail. He has six children aged 25 to 13 who all get involved, along with his wife Clare, he tells me “She has been there for me through it all: she is a very wise and beautiful lady.” He loves watching his son play rugby for Truro. “There is a group of dads, and mums, who stand on the touchline who are very special to this charity. It wouldn’t be here without them, whatever the obstacle or whatever we needed… they came up with an answer or the goods. It’s a very special club!”

Get Involved

'Spirit of Falmouth' is being refurbished and they are looking for Cornish companies to sponsor a berth on her. Shaun’s biggest concern is that there are veterans suffering alone in Cornwall who know nothing about Turn to Starboard. If you know of someone… or if you would like to volunteer, just get in touch.

e love the Isles of Scilly for a short break or family holiday and we love our dogs here at Cornwall Living. Luckily the Isles of Scilly are a wonderful destination for dog owners and seem to be getting more popular, with lots more places welcoming pooches. It’s a little paradise just 28 miles from the Cornish coast. Glittering white beaches seem to leave tiny pieces of silver and little diamonds shimmering on your toes and make for wonderful digging for your four-legged friend. Turquoise seas with plenty of space to run will please any dog, whether it’s a full-on swimmer, shallows galloper or timid paddler.

The Isles of Scilly are an uncrowded and unspoilt archipelago with five inhabited islands and about 140 small rocky islets, including Samson, inhabited until the nineteenth century, and Bishops Rock with its iconic lighthouse. The five main islands each have their own thriving small communities of farmers and fishermen (and women), artists, gardeners and food producers. There are plenty of small studios and galleries to visit and most will have a bowl of water outside for your dog, with honesty boxes to buy local produce and artefacts. exploring these glorious islands – locals and visitors rub shoulders and look out for unusual birds, seals and dolphins or just exchange the latest gossip. Last spring, we brought our dog, Lev, to Bryher (the smallest of the inhabited islands), staying at the luxurious, awardwinning Hell Bay Hotel. With its stunning

sea views, helpful friendly staff and fabulous food, I really can’t recommend it highly enough! The island is unspoilt, tranquil and absolutely gorgeous. This beguiling paradise really must be experienced for yourself. We had a fabulous ground floor room big enough for a large sofa as well as huge bed and space for the dog’s bed, with French windows out onto our own patio and garden – great for the dog in the morning. Here it’s all about walking round the dramatic coastline with views out over the other islands, sitting on one of the many little beaches and, when the sun is up, swimming in the turquoise sea. With our delightful retreat at Hell Bay serving as our base, we took the opportunity to explore the Isles, starting with Samson. This remote, unihabited island is perfect for exploring with the dog. The shimmering water was so tempting, we couldn’t resist taking a dip ourselves. So, in we dived, soon joined by a local seal who, drawn to this idyllic spot, obviously had the same idea!

Getting there To save you having to carry lots of dog paraphernalia with you, the Isles of Scilly vet support group has come up with an ingenious idea to help raise money. They will supply you with everything your dog needs: from basket to a dog crate, blanket or bowl; they just ask for a donation. For more information www.vetsupportgroup.co.uk. Taking the boat, Scillonian III, across with your dog becomes a part of the holiday and there are often dolphins, sunfish, occasional whales and wonderful sea birds to be seen. Or the little plane, flying out from Land’s End, Newquay and Exeter, is an excellent choice and gives you fantastic views over Land’s End before catching your first glimpse of the islands and the wonderful colours of the seas around them. Your four-legged friend can even fly in a special dog crate too! The friendly Isles of Scilly Travel team were fantastic with Lev, instantly putting him at ease on the journey. So there you are: plenty of fresh air, stunning scenery, gorgeous white sandy beaches, lots of walking, fabulous local food, peace and quiet… and you can take your favourite four-legged friend with you!

Air and Ground Source Heat Pumps Generate heat from energy in the air or ground surrounding a property. Energy transfer in the pump makes them capable of outputting over three times the energy they take in meaning they can save customers between 30-50% on their heating bills.

The Renewable Heat Incentive… à Initiated to incentivise uptake of renewable technologies. à Pays customers for the heat their system generates. Made at a set rate over a period of 7 years. à Heat pumps often pay themselves back in 7 years or less.

AD page 23.indd 1

DECC’s proposal to reduce the FiT tariff by 87% in 2016 could impact solar as an investment opportunity. The Feed-in Tariff - was initiated to incentive solar PV installation. Customers are paid at a set rate for the energy they generate for 20 years in two ways: Generation Tariff – pays customer for each unit of solar energy that is generated. Export Tariff – pays customers for any unused energy that’s exported to the grid. FiT payments and savings against electricity bills have given PV a payback period regularly under 7 years.

What do GreenGenUK suggest? Enhance solar PV with Battery Storage Already installed solar? Want to increase the energy savings you can make? Adding battery storage to a PV system enables customers to store energy generated for later use, reducing grid demand. GreenGenUK will be installing storage solutions from January 2016, with systems compatible with most existing PV installs. Enquire today and enhance the financial benefit of your PV array.

A LEMUR FEED AT NEWQUAY ZOO

T

he ring-tailed lemur is found in the forests of southern and southwestern Madagascar, the population is decreasing and they are classified as endangered. So Newquay Zoo and zoos around the world are working hard to protect these loveable, soft natured animals. You can get within touching distant of these extraordinary primates with a lemur feeding experience on Lemur Island. You will sit and feed the family of lemurs their favourite treats as they jump through the branches to reach you. We guarantee that once experienced, you’ll want to adopt a lemur for life and come back time and time again. It’s an unforgettable experience and makes a fantastic gift. The zoo also offers visitors the chance to meet and feed the penguins, meerkats and lions as well as junior and adult keeper experiences. Animal experiences start from only £70 for two people. All money spent at the zoo directly helps with the ongoing conservation work to protect animals from extinction.

favourites in equal measure; there’s also a whole sack full of special offers to ease the festive spend which is always welcome news! Talking of measures, Constantine Stores have over 100 open bottles of spirits available to sample in store, meaning you can try before you buy. This means you can try something new and still go home with a bottle you enjoy. There’s a huge selection of gift ideas including glass and miniature packs that are great for stocking fillers or more substantial presents. Prices start at just £6, so there’s something to suit every budget, but also range up into the thousands for bottles of super rare whisky you’ll be hard

pressed to find anywhere else. With such a bewildering amount of choice, you may well need some advice on what to buy. Luckily there’s always someone on hand to offer you the wisdom of over fifty years in the wine and spirits industry. The team are a font of knowledge on their products and the best way to drink them. Mark and Andrew Rowe, the sons of owner Ivan, are both experts in their respective fields of spirits and wine and are always on hand to help you chose the right bottle for any occasion. You’ll find Mark in the whisky aisle, lovingly tending to the malts like a shepherd with his flock and he’s always eager to discuss his personal collection of rare malts. And yes, you do often need to add a tiny drop of water to a strong whisky! Andrew can advise the best wine to go with any meal and can often be found by the bar sampling the stock for ‘research’ purposes! If you’re really lucky, you might get the chance to meet Ivan who, despite being in his eighties, still flies around the store like a dynamo! The store is a real gem with an astounding selection of over a 1000 whiskies, 300 rums, 200 gins, 150 vodkas and 1000 wines to choose from; add to that a full range of cocktail bitters and syrups, plus a collection of more esoteric spirits, and you’ll soon realise that this is easily the most encompassing and comprehensive range of alcohol available south of London.

Out and About

A beautiful day The Rockpool, a fantastic beachside bar and restaurant in Gwithian, is the perfect location to celebrate your wedding.

H

idden within the sand dunes above Gwithian beach in St Ives bay is The Rockpool, a relaxed bar and restaurant, serving delicious seafood, tasty cuisine and a range of drinks. Open everyday from 10am until late, what better way to complete a day on the beach? This spot also makes a truly magical wedding venue. After all, The Rockpool is ideally located to enjoy the unadulterated Cornish north coast, with direct access to Gwithian and Godrevy beaches; the iconic photo backdrop of the lighthouse from the National Trust headland and a beautifully nomadic venue for both ceremony and reception. “It’s rare to find a venue so private as The Rockpool,” explains Freyja Hanstein. “With such a stunning unspoilt coastline for photos and your guests to roam after the ceremony, it’s the perfect place for the perfect day.” The whole venue can be yours, or you can enjoy the beach side room and deck, dependent upon the season or your wedding size. The Rockpool has a number of recommended options, and Freyja and the team can work with you to create something completely bespoke to make your day as special and unique as it deserves to be. “It’s an idyllic place for a relaxed beach wedding or reception”, says Freyja. “Local fresh seafood, great drinks, waves just seconds away and breath taking views from Godrevy headland and the surrounding coastline.” The Dune Bar promises a private deck, a private bar and space for 162 standing. Up to 70 can be accommodated for seated dining – that’s 60 + 10 (head table), or even more for a buffet drinks reception. The Front Room is available out of peak season, along with the Dune Bar, when hiring The Rockpool exclusively. The capacity is very flexible as marquees can be put out on the front lawn for larger parties to dine together. So if you’re looking for the dream location for your dream day, look no further!

A superb

supper Wonderful food, welcoming staff, a warm atmosphere and a truly special experience at The Old Coastguard in Mousehole.

T

hose with little whippersnappers will appreciate that on the rare occasion someone (usually parents) says: “Why don’t you two go for some supper, and I’ll mind the children”, it’s an offer you simply cannot refuse; and one my partner and I snapped up immediately! So, with much thanks, our attention turned to choosing a place to share this rare moment of quality time together. We opted for The Old Coastguard, Mousehole, as somewhere a little different, away from the usual spoiling’s on our doorstep in Porthleven. We’d visited during daylight with the little ones because of its beautiful location, and had always considered returning in the evening. We arrived just as the sun was giving way to the night sky and, as we entered, the warm, homely interior embraced us instantly. The restaurant and bar abound with wood, from the charming old tables and spindle-backed chairs (every textured groove and grain telling a story of feasts gone by), to the floorboards

and cladded bar. Being an early evening booking, the restaurant was quiet, with only the crackles from the open fire and giggles from the family sitting across from us filling the air. But it soon filled up as we settled in and devoured the wine list and menu. Drinks certainly weren’t in short supply, with the well-lit bar displaying all manner of tipples: beers, local ales, spirits and wines. We started with a glass of the pink stuff. A 2014 Bordeaux Rosé ‘with bells on’ for myself, easy and clean to drink, a typical French rosé. My partner opted for a French rosé too, slightly paler in colour, incredibly smooth and very moreish! Being a rare occasion, we naturally went the whole hog, excited to try as much of the tempting menu as possible. Nibbles to start included tempura oyster with pickled vegetables and crisp smoked haddock with fennel slaw, both dishes offering a taste of things to come. We often share our dishes when dining out and this was no exception. To start we ordered pigeon, salt-baked celeriac with beetroot and hazelnut sauce

and from the prix fixe menu, sardines, chorizo garlic butter and spiced crumb. The pigeon was a triumph – packed with its own unique flavour, and paired perfectly with the sauce, it certainly didn’t last long. Saying that, neither did the sardines; light and fresh with sweet garlic and spicy chorizo packing a punch. For the main event, we continued with one fish dish and one meat dish. I decided on a wine change, opting to go red. A large glass of 2013 IGP Terre Scillane Rosso was suggested; deep and heavy, bold and brave, I loved every mouthful. The Creedy Carver duck with pressed potato, braised cabbage and caramel apple looked too good to miss – and it certainly didn’t disappoint; the duck crisp on the outside and perfectly pink and moist inside, the caramel apple sweet and sharp, with the cabbage and potato adding yet more texture and flavour – every mouthful better than the last. The fish dish consisted of grilled whole mackerel, Picasso potatoes, rainbow chard and herb butter. With simplicity leading the charge, we loved every bite. Our plates clean, the young and enthusiastic waitress recommended a basil sorbet while

we waited for our desserts. Delicious! Fragrant and refreshing, a recommendation I’m happy to pass on. We then spoke with the charming manager, Louis, discussing the quality of local food in Cornwall and how spoilt we are living here with so many great places to dine – I’d have loved for him to grab a glass and pull up a chair! Our final course arrived and our eyes widened before grabbing spoons and indulging in dessert: a caramelised white chocolate mousse, raspberries and crumble. And, yes, it absolutely did taste just as good as it sounds! The perfect finale for what had been quite simply a fabulous meal. Wonderful food, warm, welcoming staff and atmosphere… a truly special evening. We’ll certainly be returning with little ones, and again on those rare occasions, without.

t’s always nice to hear of new ventures doing remarkable well later on down the line. The first months of getting a new business up and running will always be the hardest part of the process and even more so in an industry saturated in competition, like Cornwall with its abundant foodie scene. We first visited 57 Fore Street back in August and followed up our brilliant experience with a review in Foodie Cornwall. Since then, four months have passed and we keep hearing nothing but good things about the alluring Frenchstyle, family-run restaurant in St Ives. ‘Cornish tapas with a twist’ – a perfect title for the restaurant’s tantalising menu, and upon our return we were glad to see that although the menu had changed, the tapas style of food and dining hadn’t.

Food

As per our first visit to this charming little restaurant, a warm welcome was given as soon as we stepped inside. The whole restaurant was alive and buzzing with the sound of conversation and divine aromas of freshly cooked food filling the air. We couldn’t wait to get stuck in, ordering some wine and taking a look at the full menu of dishes on offer; we wanted to give the restaurant a proper try! Seated upstairs, we once again enjoyed the elevated view over St Ives’ stunning harbour. We wasted no time in ordering some drinks, with beers to start followed by a beautiful bottle of Argentinian Piedra Negra Malbec, and some olives, pepper and bread to tide us over until our muchanticipated tapas began to trickle out from the kitchen. The peppers were amazing! So off to a good start, on we ventured…

After a short while, dishes arrived starting with the flat iron steak – a dish that was quite simply divine, both in taste and presentation. Our waitress for the evening, Rosie (who it must be said was excellent, really good fun and extremely attentive to our every need), then arrived with caramelised cauliflower risotto, creamy and wholesome with the welcome accompaniment of a soft poached egg on top – really fantastic and our favourite of the lot! Another tempting new dish on the menu consisted of pickled local mackerel cleverly served with crème fraiche and roasted beetroot; the flavours went well and melted in the mouth. Light and full of flavour, it was truly sublime. Spiced black pudding scotched egg with curried mayo was again a real treat and unbelievably tasty. Oh and a cheeky Affagatto for dessert is a must too! I could go on, however to save time, why not simply go to the bottom of the page, call the restaurant and book yourself a table now? Once word travels, 57 Fore Street will be full – it’s amazing and anyone visiting St Ives or west Cornwall that misses this hidden gem will be missing out on one of Cornwall’s best foodie experiences; a unique take on tapas, done so incredibly well. Well done 57 Fore Street!

Where are you based?

Tell us about the incredible Tall Ships.

I work from a studio in Falmouth, very close to Castle Beach, which is a wonderful mix of beach life and town. On one side we have the busy hustle and bustle of the town and on the other it’s all sun cream and ice cream! It’s a fabulous mix and I often pop down for a cup of tea at the beach cafe.

Tall Ships are just amazing! What an amazing place Falmouth is to have hosted many Regattas. I was invited by the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race in 1998 to be the artist in residence and to produce their official limited edition print. I jumped at the opportunity! A rather puffed-up, brass-buttoned and moustachioed gentleman arrived at my studio to view the paintings I had prepared and, after a few mutterings and splutterings, he dared himself to like the work. “Well, it’s not what we normally have, but you know I do rather like it!” I’ve been invited back for the 2008 and 2014 regattas by Cornwall Council as the official artist in residence. Falmouth does Tall Ships in a league of its own!

How does location inspire you? Location is everything for me. I just couldn’t conjure up the emotion and passion that my work radiates from a nondescript building or location. I was very careful to choose a period property to work from – it has a built-in character and charm that quietly lifts everything in one’s life and art. Falmouth has that rare blend of commerce and holiday all mixed up and that is what my life is really. I call it being on holiday at home and I have now been on ‘holiday’ for 25 years! It’s great! Do you prefer painting from memory and photos, or from real life in the field? It really is special painting on location, but it does come with difficulties. I need to experience a location from life, but then I can use that experience, memories and imagination together with reference to paint many more pieces in the controlled environment of my studio. So my mind and feelings are all back in the moment and this helps to inform the painting as it’s created.

What do you get up to when not painting? Meditation is vital for me – it’s an essential part of my day! I have two amazingly talented children, Martha-Lilly and Wilamena who do a really good job of filling up any spare time. I have a fabulous Land Rover Defender Camper that we take all over Cornwall. Those trips with the family really inspire my paintings, walking the cliffs, star gazing and exploring.

W

ith new routes being announced at Cornwall Airport Newquay and more European destinations planned for 2016 we thought it was time to talk to Al Titterington, Managing Director, and Keith Marshall, Finance Director, to find out more about the continuing success of Newquay Airport. Tell us a bit about your backgrounds? Al: “I got the aviation bug working at Leeds Bradford Airport where I worked as an aircraft dispatcher. I read Economics at university and later did a Masters in Airport Planning and Management before being parachuted in to Doncaster Sheffield Airport during its transition from a military base to a civil airport, before moving to Cornwall. Firstly consulting for Cornwall (County) Council on the transition of RAF St Mawgan to what is now Cornwall Airport Newquay before becoming Operations Director here. I just love aviation, every day is different; but I am a bit of a city boy at heart and it took a while to settle in to life in Cornwall, but I wouldn’t have it any other way now… I love the lifestyle here.” Keith: “I guess mine is a rather different story! I moved here after spending four years working as Head of Finance for Tresco Estate on the Isles of Scilly. I covered the finance for the whole island, but also looked

Out & About

after everything from IT and retail and HR. One minute I might be confirming the price of a cow going to market and the next working on the re-development of the Island Hotel. We didn’t want our children weekly boarding as they got older, so it was time to come back to the mainland and I saw the FD job here and thought, ‘Oh, that would be really interesting.” So, bring us up to date. Al: “We will fly about a quarter of a million passengers this year and that will increase next year with the new routes. Attracting Ryanair back with more destinations and Flybe offering more capacity is key to our future. It’s important to never underestimate the importance of the airport to Cornwall and it’s economy; our connectivity is vital.” Keith: “There are about 700 jobs directly or indirectly dependent on the airport, which can feel quite a responsibility. Companies like Augusta Westland and Bristows create well-paid, skilled jobs in Cornwall, as well as the airport itself. Al: “We are both very hands-on when needed. The airport is manic in the summer months and it’s all hands on deck, we have a rota for the management team to work on Saturdays, boarding flights, helping passengers…” he grins. “Last year I was pushing one elderly lady in her wheelchair and she insisted on tipping me! The £1 went in the charity box. But it does help us understand the pressure points for frontline staff.”

What do you like to do in your spare time?

ç LEFT Keith Marshall Finance Director (Left)

Al says laughing: “My wife still doesn’t think I have the whole work / life balance thing right yet! But I do love living here, it’s a different pace; I have a ten minute drive to work past Watergate Bay with views out to Trevose Head; it certainly beats fighting the M42! I love horse racing, and I still play football for my local team. We like Crantock beach for a walk and the Harbour Hotel in Newquay has great food, or Rick Stein’s, Nathan Outlaw and Paul Ainsworth for a special night out.”

Al Titterington Managing Director (Right)

Keith: “My family and pets absorb most of my leisure time. We love Trelissick for walking the dogs: a black lab and Jack Russell. We love the beaches too, Maenporth and Praa Sands for a long walk. And we like the occasional night out in our local, The Royal Oak in Perranwell. My wife is Cornish, so it’s been like coming home for us.” As we walk out they introduce me to Abi and Debs, both Passenger Service Agents, who greet you and check you in; then see you safely onto your flight, whatever the weather, and apparently we still manage to wander off and get lost… But that’s another story! I will have to come back and spend a day with Abi and Debs… maybe 'a day in the life of the airport'?

A real gem

Introducing Salubrious House, a beautiful holiday home overlooking the bay in St Ives.

C

leverly combining serenity and well-being with tradition and bespoke creativity, Salubrious House has been flawlessly renovated to create a totally unique luxury holiday home enjoying an unrivalled position in central St Ives. Hidden behind stone walls just a stone’s throw from Fore Street, open the doors to its secret garden, a wonderful tranquil oasis of botanical plants and brimming pots – a totally unexpected surprise! A spacious slate terrace leads from the double glass kitchen doors, a wonderful private vantage point to absorb the salty sea air and those everchanging harbour views. You’ll never tire of the jackpot views and luxury of the location. The beautiful harbour backdrop and white sand beaches are just a moment’s walk away along with a collection of artisan cafes and cool bars within tempting distance. Salubrious House accommodates up to eight guests, offering four beautiful bedrooms, each individually styled. Built in 1812, Salubrious House has long been a majestic icon within St Ives, an historic landmark from the sea and Smeaton’s Pier. The owner’s heart and interior passion ooze from every room. Every consideration has been taken to maximise its best features, from the glorious light that bounces around the space to the wonderful vistas capturing the blue seas and coast-scapes of St Ives Bay.

The open plan layout of the kitchen and dining spaces ensure holiday conversation flows as dinner is created and aperitifs mixed. A cool colour palette of ink blues and aged brown leathers, hand printed cushions set the coastal scene and complement the gallery of artwork throughout the house, each a treasured memory of the owner’s travels. Four bedrooms offer an inspired fusion of luxury beds and soft furnishings with midcentury and more contemporary furniture. The family bathroom is truly indulgent with stylish emerald green Moroccan floor tiles and opulent claw foot bath, a contrasting vintage sign continues the salvaged finds of the house, a once in a lifetime treasure from a Parisian flea market. The name ‘Salubrious’ means ‘health-giving’, a truly apt name for this most beautiful abode. Guests are invited to stay a while in the company of Salubrious House and leave feeling rested and rejuvenated. Salubrious House is available to book year round through Cornish Gems. Short breaks start from £14160 and weekly stays from £1889.

The Mouse House, Mousehole

For many, holidays in Cornwall are defined by lazy days on yellow sand beaches, sampling the day’s freshest catch, soothing views of the undulating sea and a quintessential Cornish cottage to return to after a long day of exploring. The Mouse House certainly ticks all of these boxes. This newly-renovated Mousehole cottage is - despite its petite name – a spacious haven sleeping up to 8. Perfect for families, the property effectively has two plush master bedrooms with en suites. Children will love the twin room with Xbox 360 and the bunkbed room with its very own porthole.

There’s something inherently magical about Mousehole, with its narrow streets and rows of cottages. It holds a sense of tranquillity and of time stood still that draws visitors from all over, who return year-on-year. The harbour beach, cafes, shops and restaurants are all just a short walk from The Mouse House, as is the spectacular South West Coast Path. Positioned perfectly, views sweep panoramically from the harbour, across Mount’s Bay and in through big bay windows and bi-fold doors. Summer days are for languishing on the patio or decking area before strolling to one of the village’s reputed eateries or firing up the barbeque, watching the sun slowly set on another day. While The Mouse House has been tentatively coerced into the modern day with plush furnishings, a sleek kitchen, a Smart TV and other such mod-cons, the property still retains its cottage charm. Much like the harbour itself, thick Cornish stone walls provide blissful refuge in the winter months, keeping in the warmth of the wood fire and offering a cosy coastal retreat. 01208 814781 www.thebeachhousecompany.co.uk

The Pearl, Newquay

Newquay is a buzzing hub of activity on Cornwall’s north coast, celebrated for its waves and watersports, stretches of golden sand and thriving nightlife. Here, in an exclusive setting, you’ll find The Pearl, a luxury apartment with full balcony and commanding sea views over the headland. The Pearl is just a short stroll from Fistral, the UK’s most iconic surfing beach and home to popular beachside eateries including The Stable and the recently opened Rick Stein’s Fish & Chips. The Pearl has been cleverly designed to make the most of the amazing views, and the wide sweep of the Atlantic can be seen from all bedrooms and living areas. Sleeping four, the apartment is very family friendly. The owners have given careful attention to every detail of the retreat, with beautiful and well-chosen furniture and fittings throughout. The open-plan living and dining area greets guests with a décor of airy blues and greys, a comfy corner sofa and a generous TV. The dining area is relaxing and modern, while the kitchen beyond is very well equipped – enjoy glimpsing towards the sea as you mix a crab salad or a G&T! The beauty of this spot is that it’s only

minutes away from the hustle and bustle of the town, yet also very conveniently placed to escape it and explore the stunning rugged beauty and dramatic headlands of this stretch of coastline.

ere at Cornwall Living, we really love to pamper ourselves. And who wouldn’t? After all, we all need a bit of ‘me time’ every now and then! Thankfully, we are utterly spoilt for choice in Cornwall when it comes to the fantastic range of wellness retreats, health spas, relaxing getaways, and invigorating treatments and products on offer. This month our competitions pages are full of fantastic getaways, some including access to spa and leisure facilities. Take Whalesborough Farm Holiday Cottages and Spa, for example – the ultimate place to relax and unwind. The 500-acre farm near Bude offers excellent 5-star self-catering, heated indoor swimming pool, outside pool, gym, sauna and spa among its many facilities. As if this wasn’t enough, the north coast is right on its doorstep to be enjoyed. Whether you hit the surf, walk the coastal path, or try out the many cycle routes, get out into the great outdoors and feel yourself being revived and replenished. Many people nowadays are bringing the spa experience back to their own homes, and this is becoming more affordable for all. Certainly there are the premium options for the healthier budget, but a little slice of luxury needn’t break the bank. Nothing beats sitting outside with a glass of bubbly in your own private hot tub. Cornwall Pools has a wide range of hot tubs, as well as providing swimming pool installations and designing wellness suites – for hotels, boutique spas or even the home! There’s also a fantastic range on offer at Elite Spas and Leisure, which can be found at Trelawney Garden Centre, Sladesbridge. We really love the swim pools – essentially the swimming equivalent of a treadmill or exercise bike. In one of these nifty pools, slightly larger than the typical hot tub, you could swim the length of The English Channel in the same spot, while a variable current provides resistance. They’re great for general exercise and wellbeing, building up strength after an injury and physiotherapy. Being non-weight bearing and low impact, swim pools are great for all ages, abilities and fitness levels. But whatever options you choose for healthy body and mind, you can guarantee it’s all to be discovered, right here in Cornwall!

Decade of success T Bodmin Treatment Centre celebrates its 10th birthday. en years ago, a new purposebuilt NHS treatment centre was opened next to Bodmin Community Hospital, designed to provide facilities and equipment for assessment, diagnosis and treatment on a day-case basis. The Treatment Centre was built in response to the growing demand for services close to where people live, saving patients from north and east Cornwall having to travel to Truro or Plymouth for simple diagnostics and day case procedures. Run by Ramsay Healthcare, the same company that owns Duchy Hospital in Truro, the centre has become a real asset to the community offering day case procedures such as hip and knee injections, hernia operations, cataract operations, dermatology, ENT and maxillo facial surgery. Since opening, over 98,000 patients have walked through the doors of Bodmin Treatment Centre – that’s almost 1 in 5 of the population of Cornwall! This has included 42,000 day cases and 56,000 outpatient visits! The day cases treated in the past decade include: 12,000 cataract replacements, 15,000 endoscopies, 2,000 hernia repairs, 3,500 MaxFax dental, 3,000 dermatology, 4,700 gynae procedures, 1,000 orthopaedic, and 400 ENT. Bodmin Treatment Centre has also proved popular because of its short wait times, consultant-led care and free parking. Patients find it convenient and treatment at Bodmin Treatment Centre sometimes saves

them a longer journey to one of the larger hospitals such as Derriford and Treliske. As a small hospital, Bodmin Treatment Centre is able to respond quickly to the healthcare needs of the local community, providing services such as its ‘See & Treat’ cataract clinic. A See & Treat clinic means that patients can have their consultation in the morning and then, if treatment is required, have their procedure that afternoon, saving them making another visit to the hospital. “My overall care at Bodmin treatment centre was first class in every way”, says one patient, Mr Gronwalt. Meanwhile, another, Mrs Carolyn May, adds: “The care was excellent and the hospital spotless. The staff were professional, friendly and polite, not to mention helpful. Well done!” Chris Sealey, Bodmin Treatment Centre’s General Manager says: “I have been involved with Bodmin Treatment Centre since its very beginning and I am enormously proud of what the team has achieved over the past decade. We look forward to the next 10 years of providing high quality care in Bodmin.” If you’d like to receive your treatment at Bodmin just ask your GP to refer you to Bodmin Treatment Centre.

m a e t m a e r d e Th Three inspiring companies from the south west pull together to create a new property, with amazing results.

I

sn’t it great when things come together? So we were delighted to hear about three innovative companies collaborating on a luxury seaside property, overlooking the bay in Mawgan Porth. We discover exactly how they built the dream home.

Drawing up the plans

CSA Architects were tasked with designing a new property to replace a 1960s house in an incredible coastal location. The owners made a determined effort to use local companies throughout all stages of the build including CSA Architects, Cornish Interiors and Amos Lighting, as well as the builders, engineers, kitchen designers and furniture suppliers. CSA Architects used a number of clever design features throughout, notably the ‘floating’ stairs with structural glass balustrade and feature stone wall, large aperture windows overlooking the bay, a vaulted gable window in the master bedroom and frameless glass balconies. Externally, the house reflects the Cornish vernacular, using simple and robust building materials, complemented with crisp contemporary detailing to reflect modern living standards and construction methods. The building was also carefully designed to reduce visual impact while maximising the stunning sea views.

Finishing touches

Cornish Interiors had the pleasure of working closely with CSA and construction firm Marnick Builders on this stunning property with fantastic views, perched on the cliffs. The clients wanted a home from home that they could relax in, so no precious finishing details. This essentially gave the team scope to steer the design as best befitted the beachside location. Cornish Interiors designed the interior from scratch, using local suppliers for as much of the project as possible, from curtains and wood floors to the bespoke kitchen and even the hot tub! Cornish Interiors has a showroom full of inspirational home furnishings in the Royal William Yard in Plymouth, open to the public, 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday. If you are about to embark on a new project, which requires a designer’s touch, why not speak to the team at Cornish Interiors to see what they can do for you?

Adding some ambiance

To complete the project, Amos Lighting was enlisted to create a versatile and impressive lighting scheme. They achieved this using a number of cleverly concealed lights and some dramatic feature pendants for impact. To complement the style and feel of the interior, it was decided to use an eclectic selection of contemporary lighting from some of the world’s finest designers. This includes fittings from Flos, Foscarini and Artemide. The design integrity of this decision is proven by the fact that some of the lights were designed over 50 years ago and, yet, still look incredible today! “Good, creative lighting has the ability to completely transform a living space for the better,” explains Nicola Amos. To view the lights used in this project – and more – visit the stunning and newly refurbished showroom in Exeter, where the team can provide tips and techniques on how to use lighting to best effect.

ornwall Glass & Glazing is one of the south west’s premier glazing companies. Established in 1978, the family business has grown to 15 branches with 230 colleagues, supplying the West Country and beyond. But the company has been doing so much more for the region, giving back to the community, in Cornwall and further afield, with links to foundations in Devon and Somerset. In 2015, Cornwall Glass & Glazing’s charitable fund, held by the Cornwall Community Foundation, invested £12,563 in

ten community projects all across Cornwall. The Cornwall Glass Fund was set up six years ago by Cornwall Glass & Glazing, following the company’s long-term ambition to set up a charity, to contribute to and support its surrounding community, and has invested a total of over £45,000 in community groups across Cornwall. The projects awarded in June 2015 included Cornwall Accessible Activity Programme (CAAP), Equus Solutions CIC, Home-Start Kernow, People & Gardens CIC, Perranzabuloe PCC, Roaming CIC, St Austell Sea Cadets, St Erme Village Hall, Truro Canoe Club and Work Skills South West CIC. The grants have been awarded to community projects which specifically focus upon mental health, children, and organisations supporting people affected by domestic violence, all of which can bring a sustainable difference to our county. The company’s initiative with Truro’s Bosvigo School fund is extending links further with the community and our younger generations. Cornwall Accessible Activity Programme (CAAP) was awarded £1,500 towards providing summer holiday activities for disabled children and their siblings. Newquay based CAAP provides access to

activities for disabled children and young people, taking advantage of group discounts, sometimes subsidising activities to enable children to participate in creating friendship groups, raising self-esteem and enhancing independence. Over the long summer holidays, disabled children can become isolated and lonely. “The money gave us a massive kick start, enabling disabled children and young people to achieve things their parents did not think possible whilst also having fun”, says Sandy Lawrence, Chair of CAAP. “Without the funding, we wouldn’t have been able to grow and we now support in excess of 200 families who have a disabled child in Cornwall.” Roaming CIC in Penzance received £1,500 from the Cornwall Glass Fund. The Project is made up of an enthusiastic group of artists who meet weekly at St Petroc’s Society’s Breadline Centre in Penzance to be creative and enjoy each other’s company. The project provides activities that would otherwise be unaffordable and bridges the gap between people who are homeless and those who do have homes by inviting the wider community to their exhibition. It mostly benefits single men and women, aged 18 to 65, who find themselves disadvantaged,

excluded, vulnerable or homeless. Almost 100 individuals have benefitted since the arts company was established. Mark Mitchell, Company Chairman of Cornwall Glass & Glazing, says: “It’s really wonderful that we’re able to invest in our local community, supporting so many worthy and marvellous causes. As a local family business, spanning the last four decades, now employing over 100 Cornish employees, it’s heartening to see some of my colleagues participating in the tricky but privileged role of grant making. There’s much pleasure seeing these very deserving recipients benefitting from our and other like-minded businesses’ charitable endeavours, in our pursuit of wishing to put back something tangible, meaningful and lasting into our county.” So what’s next for 2016? The Fund will concentrate on supporting organisations that assist children and young people, elderly people and carers, particularly young carers.

veryone strives for a home that’s welcoming inside. But let’s spare a thought for the outside too; after all, it’s the first thing you see! So if your driveway is looking a bit tired, perhaps it’s time to give it a bit more kerb appeal. If you’re fed up of digging up weeds and want a driveway solution that’s completely maintenance free, talk to Oltco. Oltco’s solutions are also perfect for holiday homeowners, who want a hardwearing and safe outdoor area, which looks perfect all year round. The company has handy decking products too. Oltco provides a wide range of flooring solutions – inside and out – for private homes, large commercial spaces and even heritage sites. They know their stuff – the family-run business, established in 2004, has a client list including Wembley Stadium, John Lewis and Jamie Oliver. Not content with transforming driveways and floors, they’re also transforming lives, with an inspiring apprenticeship scheme. We catch up with Sales Director John Pearce, who tells us more about its success. “The Oltco way has always been driven through creating positive feelings”, explains John. “So to have a working environment in a place we love, surrounded by local people who have been given an opportunity, is very rewarding.” Six people have now been through the apprenticeship scheme, with four carrying on full time, one as a sub-contractor and another starting the scheme. John continues: “We’re not looking for people with an existing skill set, but young, local individuals who have the foundation to be successful, not just in Oltco but life in general: morales, positive energy and a willingness to learn.” Recent success stories include Matt Harris (19) and Stefan Mills (18), both offered full time positions having completed the course. “The apprenticeship at Oltco has been a great opportunity for me,” says Matt. “I have been able to learn new skills in a working environment I really enjoy. I’ve always been a shy guy but working with Johnny and Tom has helped me really come out of my shell. I owe a lot to the boys and my manager, Ben.”

n these days of ubiquitous flat-pack furniture and mass-produced, offthe-shelf doors and windows, it’s not just refreshing, but positively heart-warming, to be reminded that there are still highly accomplished craftspeople out there, creating unique pieces and keeping traditional skills alive. It’s also a great comfort to discover people whose work is so closely aligned to and informed by the environment in which they live. Ben Harris, Master Carpenter at River Oak, is one of this increasingly rare breed. Hailing from a long lineage of foresters, carpenters and engineers, Ben lives and works near Falmouth, fulfilling his passions of exploring the woods and sailing traditional boats on the nearby waters. Making the most of his affinity with our native broadleaved trees and woodlands, Ben uses timber from local sources such as Tregothnan Estate by the Fal, and Maristow on Dartmoor, taking the time to walk the woodlands and understand the source of his materials. Ben has wide experience in a variety of woodworking, woodland management, sawmilling, oak-framed carpentry, furniture making, joinery and boatbuilding. “I take real joy in the variety of timbers and their specific characteristics and uses”, explains

Ben, “often working with the natural curves and grain of the timber to show the life of the tree in the work.” Whether curved oak bends for boat timbers, or bracing in an oak framed balcony; beautiful swirling olive ash for custom furniture or split chestnut shingles for natural and durable roofing. River Oak works closely with architects, engineers, garden designers and other specialist trades to create timber structures from oak-framed cabins, sunrooms and house extensions to bridges, benches and balconies. Ben’s enjoyment of community projects is evident through the array of his creations dotted across Cornwall, from the book room in Beerwolf Books, the popular Falmouth pub-bookshop, to the boat inspired suspension bridge on the coastal path at Poltesco for the National Trust, and the yurt classroom at Zelda School, Gweek. So if you are planning a new project, which requires a personal touch and the raw beauty of quality local materials, lovingly crafted, forget the big furniture warehouse chains – speak to Ben, instead!

Advice

s on i s n e P

Changes in the financial planning landscape.

S

ince the introduction of the new pension rules in April, pension savers have been taking out around £27million a day from their pots, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI). Most commentators agree that there has been no rush to buy Maseratis or to take world cruises, it seems that retirees are exercising more prudence in planning for their financial futures. Many are aware that they could face large tax bills if they withdraw more than their 25% tax–free entitlement. The ABI figures covering April, May and June, show that £1.3 billion was paid out in cash lump sums, with an average payment size of just under £15,000. Around 264,000 income drawdown payments were made and some £990 million was invested in 17,800 annuities Annuities still have a role to play

Although annuity sales have dipped, they still have a part to play in retirement planning. One of their main benefits is security. In exchange for the purchase price, you receive a pre-agreed, fixed income for life. Unlike other retirement income products (with the exception of investment-linked annuities) you aren’t exposed to stock market risk which could erode your income. Annuities have undergone changes designed to make them more attractive and relevant to market needs. You can, for instance, purchase guarantees that ensure payments are made for as long as 30 years, irrespective of when you die. Guarantees come at a price, the longer your guarantee period the lower your income

will be; but for many retirees security is worth paying for.

Taking a long-term view A key issue highlighted by the ability to take a pension from 55, is the need to plan for a potentially longer period spent in retirement. With more and more people set to live to 100, increasing life expectancy needs to be factored into everyone’s plans. Figures from the Office of National Statistics show that at least one woman in three aged 60 in England and Wales will reach 90, as will 20% of men aged 60.

Inheritance tax planning Under the new rules, money held in defined contribution pensions does not form part of your estate when you die, meaning your beneficiaries inherit your pension money free of Inheritance Tax (IHT). With IHT payable at 40% on assets over the current £325,000 threshold, this provides a welcome opportunity for families to pass wealth down the generations tax efficiently. Taking professional advice will help ensure that whatever age you are, you make adequate provision for a long and comfortable retirement for you and your family.

Charity

W

hile caring for clients is always their top priority, the staff at Cornwall Care support more than just their residents, the individuals they care for in the community and their families; they support other organisations and charities as well. Most recently, Cornwall Care has been seen supporting Children in Need and Breast Cancer Awareness month. The aim of Breast Cancer Awareness month is to get as many people as possible involved in raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research, highlighting the importance of breast awareness, education and research. Staff at Trengrouse, Cornwall Care’s recommended nursing home in Helston, had a fabulous day wearing pink for their wearitpink day, donning pink bunny ears and hot pink bras! Head Office staff also had fun holding a (pink) bake sale and putting on games. There were lots of glitter tattoos on sale too, so by the end of the day everyone was at least a little pink! They raised over £100. Staff at Head Office then stepped up the cuteness level with their Children in Need fundraiser, organising a friendly Best Bear Competition and fancy dress. BBC Children in Need provides grants to projects focussing on children and young people who are disadvantaged. The charity supports small and large organisations which empower children and extend their life choices, also providing year-round grant programmes. Its vision – that ‘every child in the UK has

a childhood which is safe, happy and secure, that allows them the chance to reach their potential’ – aligns itself closely with the culture at Cornwall Care. Although their clients are predominantly elderly, they also believe strongly in living a life that is safe, happy and full of hope. Staff dressed up in polkadots, drew on spots, donned their Pudsey ears and pulled out their Children in Need t-shirts. But the highlight of the day was the Best Bear Competition. Everyone had a wonderful time raising money for a fantastic cause. Helping others is what Cornwall Care is all about. With 16 care homes across Cornwall and over 1,400 clients in their own homes, Cornwall Care is the biggest provider of care in Cornwall. They support not only elderly people and those with dementia but also people over the age of 18 who require supported living. Known for their genuine loving care, staff at Cornwall Care go that extra mile to make a difference; by supporting other organisations and campaigns, they care not only for their own clients but also the communities around them.
