Cornwall has some wonderful, often rather quirky old buildings, so we go in search of some of the most unusual conversions. From an iconic old engine house, a fabulous fort, and a chapel, to a lowly agricultural building and unassuming fish cellar, it’s really amazing what some craftsmanship, hard work and a lot of love can do to transform and breathe life into an old building: whatever it’s origins.

And just to show what a small world Cornwall is, the Old Fish Cellar in Mousehole was converted by Chris and his interior designer, wife, Camilla. Chris is a lifeboatman who shot the cover of our October edition… small world indeed! We meet Jason Nicholas, fisherman and member of another Cornish icon: the Fisherman’s Friends, to find out about his life; and catch-up with Kim Conchie, Chief Exec of Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, to discover more about his love of all things Cornwall. Amanda is back for our regular health and wellbeing page, extolling the importance of hugging. And we go undercover to review Porthminster Kitchen in St Ives. We do get invited out to restaurants in Cornwall, and regularly review them for you, but… they know we are coming! The ‘Incognito’ review is just that; we go incognito to eat at a restaurant and stay undercover until the review is done. Only then do we tell them what we’ve been up to. They don’t see the review until the magazine is published! Spring is finally well on its way. It’s time to tidy up the garden, and visit a gorgeous Cornish garden for some inspiration… or maybe even call in the experts to really change the look of even the smallest space. We have lots of ideas in our garden feature. We take a look at the gorgeous town of Fowey. And have all the usual great features: wonderful properties, places to eat, fashion and lots of great advice from local Cornish businesses. Enjoy

New Year, new start?
Four decades of top service
Sadly, divorces peak in the early months of each year. Jo Stone, family law partner at Stephens Scown, says it’s important to get good advice. “At Stephens Scown, we typically experience a 60% rise in divorce enquiries and cases in the New Year.”
2016 is a big year for HBH Woolacotts as they celebrate 40 years in business. Founded in July 1976 by Ted Hemmerle, HBH Woolacotts has grown into Cornwall’s largest independent electrical retailer and now has a total of 10 outlets throughout Cornwall and Devon. Still owned and managed by the same family, HBH Woolacotts has not lost its core values and continues to offer a comprehensive range of

top brand electrical products to their customers at competitive prices. At the same time HBH Woolacotts also strives to deliver a friendly and personalised service to their customers – they’re always ‘happy to be helpful’! Congratulations to all in the team. www.hbh-woolacotts.co.uk
It’s vital to seek professional advice as early as possible. Many put it off to keep costs down, but it often ends up costing more as, when a lawyer is eventually brought in, it takes more time to correct mistakes. Delaying matters can sometimes bring significant tax consequences as well. Divorce doesn’t have to mean court proceedings. There are alternatives such as through collaborative law or mediation, which can be quicker and cheaper, and which lawyers can advise on and facilitate. Jo Stone is a partner in the family law team at Stephens Scown in Truro. A Deputy District Judge sitting in County Courts across the south west, he is also named as a leader in his field in Chambers and Partners. If you have any queries, contact Jo on 01872 265100, by email solicitors@stephens-scown.co.uk or via www.stephens-scown.co.uk
Cornwall Stitchers This year, on 9th April, the Cornwall Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild is hosting the South West Region Festival Day at the Pavilion Centre, Royal Cornwall Showground at Wadebridge. The speakers at the event are Amanda Clayton and Vivien Prideaux, and there will be lots of interesting traders as well as the usual raffles and lucky dips, not to mention competitions and exhibitions to keep you amused. While you’re in the area, why not extend your visit? Padstow is nearby as is the Eden Project and many National Trust properties around Wadebridge. www.cornwallstitchers.co.uk

Porthleven gallery makes it easy to Own Art Gone are the days of longingly staring at your favourite piece of art on the wall, dejected and unfulfilled as you cannot afford said piece! We were delighted to discover that The Custom House Gallery in Porthleven has recently signed up to the Own Art initiative. Own Art allows people to purchase artwork that would otherwise be out of their reach, by paying for the piece in handy and affordable monthly instalments with no deposit required. Initiatives such as this bring art to everyone, but they are also great for the artists too, helping them reach a larger audience. The Own Art initiative’s ethical approach to business sets a fantastic example for others to follow. After all, art is for everyone to enjoy and in anyway furthering that cause is to be respected! “The fact that the scheme was completely ethical with no interest involved was important to us,” says Louise Winterton, of The Customs House Gallery. Louise continues: “The gallery has a good, strong and reputable identity, and we’re confident and pleased that the Own Art initiative will continue to uphold that.” Each establishment in the initiative is also assessed on the grounds of friendliness, excellent advice and service and beautiful eligible artwork. So why not pop into the gallery now and find that perfect piece to hang above your fireplace?
David Hunt Lighting is one of the UK’s longest surviving established lighting manufacturers. Based in the Cotswolds for the last 100 years, David Hunt Lighting is best known for designing and manufacturing wholly original products. The David Hunt design team generates a stream of new ideas incorporating different textures, colours and finishing techniques. The results are a range of innovative, unusual and exciting products that cross the design spectrum from classical to contemporary and offer a choice for all interior styles. The team have developed manufacturing over many years and each item is handmade and finished using traditional hand-finishing
techniques. This allows them to re-create the illusion of almost any finish on any surface such as handstitched leather or the majestic antler. The production team can make almost anything you may require, from extending arms on existing products to total custom designs. If you have specific ideas for your home’s lighting that you’d like some help realising, speak to the team at Holdcroft or pop into the Bude showroom to see how they can help. www.holdcroftlighting.co.uk 01288 350627

In our quest to find the most unusual property conversions, we’ve searched far and wide for iconic Cornish buildings, large and small, which have been lovingly brought back to life.
ornwall’s unique charm owes a lot to its beautiful vernacular architecture – engine houses, stone cottages, agricultural buildings, Methodist chapels. Sadly many have since fallen into disrepair, but many are being injected with new life. As Matthew Rowe, of Savills Cornwall, notes: “Inland there are so many hidden gems to discover with fascinating histories.” Lucy, from Boutique Retreats, adds: “A converted property – whether it’s a seventeenth-century barn, a tiny fisherman’s cottage or a lovely old chapel – offers something truly unique. Cornwall has these in spades.” Of course, some rightly question whether iconic historic buildings, held dear to the public, should be converted. But surely it’s a fitting tribute allowing them to stand tall for another 100 years, rather than letting them crumble and be lost forever? And one thing that’s certain is that the new caretakers care passionately about these buildings and their heritage too. Lucy continues: “People tend to take on these kind of properties on a very personal level – they are always a labour of love.” So this month, we celebrate the rebirth of some of these fallen giants. And what’s even better, we’ve searched far and wide to select some that are currently available either as holiday lets or on the property market. Why not take the opportunity to experience the magic for yourselves?

Landmarks really don’t get much more iconic (or Cornish) than the engine house. These mighty structures were built to pump water out of the mines, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But when the industry ground to a halt, the engines were mercilessly ripped out for scrap, leaving the roofless shells to the elements. Thankfully, it was a happy ending for Wheal Rose, on the outskirts of Redruth, lovingly brought back to life by current owner, Steve Eagle. “The Engine House was built around the 1850s but apparently never used”, explains Steve. “It was an empty shell”, he says, “but as the granite walls were sound, it made it a question of filling in the holes.” But it wasn’t all that simple – being a heritage site, even colour palettes were carefully scrutinised for authenticity! “Work with the Conservation Officer throughout the project”, says Steve, “and glean as much information from people involved with industrial archaeology.” Steve continues: “We have had a great deal of pleasure from the engine house, our home from home for almost 20 years.” This unique building is now up for sale, through Humberts, a bittersweet moment for Steve: “We want to spend our free time with our grandchildren, but we’ll still come to Cornwall and when we do, we’ll look at the old mine and think: we built that.” Contact Humberts for details (www.humberts.com).
This building in Mousehole may not have had quite so lofty beginnings – starting life as an unassuming fish cellar – but what it lacks in stature, it certainly makes up for in style. The Old Fish Cellar, the work of interior designer Camilla Banks (www. camillabanksinteriordesign.co.uk) and her cinematographer husband, Chris Yacoubian, is a masterclass in design, utilising a monochrome colour palette, beaten copper sinks, reclaimed materials and bold utilitarian lighting to great effect. “We love a challenge and The Old Fish Cellar certainly was that”, says Camilla, “Disused and unoccupied for 40 years, it was a dark and damp cellar when we bought it, used by fishermen to store their nets. But this is exactly what attracted us to it – it had character! Compact in size, we embraced the New York loft style living, creating an open-plan studio space, just enough for a couple’s retreat. We wanted it to be functional as well as stylish, and its raw industrial style with a nod to the nautical was inspired by the space and its surroundings.” Camilla continues: “I remember holidays as a kid, when we’d rock up at a cottage and the first thing mum would do is clean everything. Gone are those days and our motto is ‘holidays should be nicer than home’!” If you’d like to pay a visit, contact Boutique Retreats (www.boutique-retreats.co.uk).

The Chapel
é ABOVE The stunning living space, overlooking the water ê BELOW The renovation, before and after
A few miles down from Port Isaac on the north coast is a beautifully renovated Methodist chapel, a building as breathtaking as its location. Built around 1850, the chapel was later converted to a glass store, and then a dwelling, in 1990, before being wonderfully restored by Jeremy Goring. The original conversion was done fairly economically and unsympathetically, so it was largely a case of starting again: stripping it back, opening up the ceiling, exposing the original beams and removing all the fake windows and cladding. “It had almost no light”, explains Jeremy “and a very low, dark wooden ceiling.” The roof was completely
removed, rebuilt, then put back using all the original beams and original Delabole slates. “The guys who did the 1990 conversion got one thing right – putting the living space upstairs to maximise on the incredible views – who needs a view while asleep?” And the views really are sensational – lush greenery with the shimmering blue sea beckoning behind, framed by the huge arched windows; the interiors furnished in a cool, understated and contemporary style. The whole place exudes luxury and fine craftsmanship. “We were very lucky to work with a really good architect, James Morford, and extremely good, reliable builders, Barry and Adam Purchase. Each time a difficult challenge presented itself, they came up with a clever solution. Barry copied a missing beam and perfectly matched it to the original 150-year-old ones.” So, what tips does Jeremy offer to anyone embarking on a major renovation project? “Don't do it!” he laughs. “But if you must, make sure you work with someone you trust.” You also have to be realistic about the costs involved. “Think of a budget then triple it. Try your very best not to cut corners or make false economies. Easier said than done!” Of course, respecting a building’s history is fundamental. “The Chapel is in National Trust land”, explains Jeremy, “we worked closely with them to make sure the new elements were more respectful of the heritage.” Lucy, from Boutique Retreats, adds: “The aim is to celebrate the building’s history and make its soul shine, not erase it – and in our experience our guests are always drawn to places which have character and are a bit unusual.” If you fancy a stay at this little slice of paradise, contact Boutique Retreats (www.boutique-retreats.co.uk).
Don’t forget!
Stamp duty on ‘additional properties’ looks set to increase from the start of April. Matthew Rowe of Savills says: “In our view, the pending 30th March 2016 sale completion deadline will create an initial rush of demand from those seeking to avoid the additional 3% tax. So we are urging would-be vendors to act now to bring their property to the market if they want to capture these motivated buyers. And let’s not forget that the demand for properties in Cornwall also remains very strong for those who are simply looking for a family home.” (www.savills.com)

Cover feature More unusual stays… Stay in a castle Short of owning your own castle, you can at least be king for a day… or a week or so. Enjoy a short stay at the imposing Acton Castle in west Cornwall, with views over St Michael’s Mount. Helpful Holidays lets three separate apartments here (www.helpfulholidays.co.uk).
Lifeboat station With the shift towards modern lifeboats, many of the older stations dotted along the coast have sadly become redundant. Some have been converted – for a holiday with a difference, look up the great examples in Fowey, Padstow and Bude. Coverack’s former station has been transformed into a popular fish and chips restaurant, while the station in Porthleven is now an art gallery. Garden Hideaway Not a conversion, true, but a secret escape in your own garden – a beautifully crafted, tiny wooden cottage with all the facilities for you to hideaway in comfort, including a wood-burning stove. So, whether it's freedom from the kids, a refuge from visitors, or a place to accommodate them, it’ll provide all the peace you need (www.garden-hideaways.co.uk).
Bosoljack Nestled in a stunning creekside location at Port Navas, on the banks of the Helford, you’ll find Bosoljack – Cornish for ‘house in the sun by the creek’, which pretty much sums it up. This light, peaceful sanctuary was once a single storey agricultural store, probably holding manure or coal. But from humble origins, the property has been transformed into a unique waterside retreat. Well, as they say, you can alter a building but you can’t alter its location. And locations really don’t get much better! The agricultural store was sold by the owners of the adjacent farmhouse around 1927, when another storey was added. But it wasn’t until Robin and Rachael Sopp of Perranwell bought the property in the 1980s that Bosoljack really came into its own. Instantly beguiled by the stunning location, they renovated the space – then a mess of higgledy-piggledy rooms – creating the bright, open-plan retreat as enjoyed today. “All the wood was covered in thick white paint”, explains Robin, “which we stripped back to reveal the grain.” They also gave the
property a smile with the clever addition of a balcony, capitalising on the spectacular and inimitable views over the creek. But the water is not simply a treat for the eye, to be admired from afar – the property comes with its own access to the creek, a real asset, and perfect for exploring the magical waterways of this incredible location. Having been successfully let by Helpful Holidays (www.helpfulholidays.co.uk) over the years, the opportunity has arisen to become Bosoljack’s new custodian and make wonderful memories of your own. Matthew Rowe of Savills explains the allure of this beautiful and unique building: “Bosoljack is just a magical property within the most beautiful setting. Port Navas is timeless with the river opening to the Helford, made famous by Daphne Du Maurier and Frenchman’s Creek. Fort Picklecombe As Chrissy Phillips of Helpful Holidays explains, “The history of Fort Picklecombe is as curious as its name. Converted into 103 apartments in the 1970s, the fabulous uninterrupted views across Plymouth Sound from this striking building perched on a promontory are a clue to its former life.” “Commissioned in the mid 19th century, Fort Picklecombe was one of ‘Palmerston’s Follies’, a chain of coastal forts to protect Devonport Naval Base from the frightening French.” However, due to international power shifts the French never actually arrived, and the threat that first prompted the building of these wonderful, imposing structures was nullified before many were completed – a costly and embarrassing episode. There was, however, a happy ending for Fort Picklecombe. “Its 40 guns were never fired”, continues Chrissy, “and after falling derelict following World War II, it has now found the perfect, more peaceful role as waterside accommodation for guests and residents.” Helpful Holidays now let five of the apartments at Fort Picklecombe, on the

Rame Peninsula, including No 84. “With time-absorbing 180 degree views of life on the water from Plymouth to Penlee Point, visitors to No. 84 are strongly advised to pack binoculars to observe passing (friendly) ships drift by. Don’t forget those walking boots either, as the building stands within beautiful Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.” So why not man the fort yourself? ne of the renowned ‘seven bays for seven days’, Constantine Bay is one of north Cornwall’s most desirable coastal locations. This magnificent and rugged part of north Cornwall coastline stretches from Porthcothan Bay in the south to Trevone Bay in the north. Trevose Golf Club is just a few hundred yards away, and Padstow with its bustling little streets and fabulous restaurants, is four miles along the coast. The area is loved by surfers, families, golfers and walkers alike with the bay offering a broad sweep of golden sand, good waves, miles of wonderful cliff top and countryside walks. The popular Camel Trail cycle path starts at Padstow and meanders its way along the banks of the Camel Estuary to Wadebridge. Polgarron is a fabulous ‘lock up and leave’ holiday home or an extremely comfortable permanent residence, perfect for enjoying the wide range of local facilities that the area has to offer. Completed in 2014 by master builders P. Doney & Sons, it is a luxuriously appointed, imaginative, coastal home. There are two main entrances, either: into a gallery with high vaulted ceilings on the first floor or along a sweeping pathway that leads to a sheltered courtyard and into the kitchen. The New England decor is
delightful with wooden shutterboards and limed oak flooring throughout and views towards the coast. With a fabulous sense of space, the upper floor has three beautiful en-suite bedrooms. The master bedroom is simply superb with views towards the sea and glimpses over the golf course. Linking all the rooms is a stunning landing area with a fabulous staircase down to the living areas. The beautifully designed sitting area has doors out to the rear courtyard as well as the front patio and lawns. The kitchen is the hub of the house featuring an AGA and a central island, flowing to a great dining area. Twin bi-fold doors and windows open to the sheltered rear courtyard making this a fabulous space for relaxing or entertaining. The garden is lawned with secluded patio areas and there is an attractive courtyard to the rear. There is plenty of parking along with three beach huts that offer for beach and garden equipment.

There could be more money tied up in your home than you think. We meet Matt Begley, retirement planning expert at Harris Begley Financial Planning, for some advice on the best way to release cash from your home.

*Equity Release Council - 'Over-55 homeowners underestimate property wealth by £90,000' - December 2015
A
recent study by the Equity Release Council has shown that more than 60% of over55’s haven’t had their home valued since they first bought it. For some homeowners this could mean that the price they paid for their house in the late 1990s has now increased on average by 156%. The news from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) is even better, reporting that in real terms, many of us approaching retirement age are underestimating the value of our homes by a whopping £90,000.* Matt explained: “As some people approach retirement money worries can become a problem. Often, supporting your lifestyle and managing credit is no problem when a steady salary is coming in every month; it’s only when the prospect of this income drying up draws closer that the reality begins to hit home. A well-chosen Equity Release scheme can alleviate these worries and pave the way to a comfortable retirement.” While 80% of us are happy to consider Equity Release it is the fear of the unknown and not understanding the options available that is preventing us taking the next step.* “As retirement planning specialists and members of The Equity Release Council we are there to guide clients through the products on offer. If at any point we don’t feel that Equity Release is suitable, then we will tell them. “However, for those without money in the bank it can be a
way of supporting yourself in retirement and providing the financial means for an acceptable standard of living,” said Matt. “In the second quarter of 2015, Equity Release totalled £384.3m, which is the largest amount on record that has been lent by the industry. Interestingly enough, the rise in Equity Release popularity came despite greater freedoms in accessing pension pots, meaning that more and more people are looking for pension alternatives. If you have debts to pay off, a child to help with university fees or want to future-proof your property for those later years then your home could be the key. It may not be appropriate for everyone, and there are many packages available, including tailormade solutions customised to you and your own needs. Equity Release is now considered by many to be as important as their pension when planning retirement. As with all things, it pays to talk to the experts. Harris Begley Financial Planning can provide you with professional, impartial advice in order to plan a brighter retirement, specifically for you.

S
t Ives, with its rows of cobbled streets, thriving art scene and independent boutiques and bistros, is not only a bustling harbour town, but also a growing foodie destination. Thousands of visitors ock here in the summer to soak up the sun, so we made the most of the quieter season to enjoy a well-earned waterside lunch with the beach below all to ourselves. The second restaurant from the Porthminster Cafe, the Kitchen sits in prime position on the harbour front. Huge
windows provide incredible views across the bay, whatever the weather. The decor is fresh, urban and understated. We chose a table at the back so we could take in the views and the ambiance, and we were not disappointed. The chilli crab claw starter was a beauty, with its own implements and a generous portion of prawn crackers. Great fresh crabmeat, sweet and succulent. The anchovy and sage fritters I had were savoury, sweet, light and delicious.

I opted for the fish special of the day – panfried brill with a white crab and caper beurre noisette and steamed new potatoes. The fish was delicate and perfectly complemented by the rich, piquant sauce. The potatoes, fresh and slightly earthy, made the ideal simple accompaniment. The hake was a more substantial dish, the meaty fish well matched with the mussels and chorizo. The dark green parsley sauce worked nicely and the fried potatoes added to the robust, hearty dish. Wine is by the glass or the bottle, and what a joy to discover that a large glass was indeed large! Never one to pass up a cheese board, my dining companion was especially delighted with the blue Brie. I couldn’t resist a taster dessert with my coffee – Cornish fudge with seaweed salt. Sweet, creamy and with the
faint taste and smell of the sea, this little dish was a great way to round off a thoroughly enjoyable lunch. If you are passing through St Ives, pop up the stairs and treat yourself to fabulous fresh food, great views and good service.

Cornish HOSPITALITY
The New Inn in Goonhavern offers a unique blend of style and comfort in which to enjoy your meal. Hearty helpings of everything Cornish at Expowest Cornwall.
I
f you want to get right to the heart of the Cornish hospitality and catering industry, at the very start of the summer season, then Expowest Cornwall provides the perfect opportunity. Hospitality and catering are the main drivers of the Cornish economy – and for over 30 years it has been a cornerstone of the Cornish business calendar for all those involved in this vibrant but close-knit market – the place where suppliers large and small showcase their latest products and services for Cornwall’s busy trade buyers. You’ll see a huge range of different exhibitors showcasing everything from foodservice to fresh produce, bakery to business services, drinks to catering equipment, and speciality foods to sundry supplies, plus much more besides. With such a broad and comprehensive range on display, the show attracts buyers from hotels, restaurants, pubs, cafes, supermarkets, grocers, delis, farm shops, independent stores, holiday parks and tourist attractions, schools, colleges, universities and hospitals. Although a trade show, it’s also an eagerly anticipated social event where the whole Cornish business community gets together to enjoy the company of colleagues, suppliers
and customers – there’s nowhere better for forging those all important business relationships that count for so much in this proudly independent community. It’s also an invaluable opportunity to see, touch and taste the latest products, to get a feel for the trends shaping the market, to weigh up a range of competing offerings all under one roof and to benefit from some exclusive offers in an environment where people are keen to strike mutually beneficial deals. This show is a crucial event on the Cornish calendar – vibrant, inspiring, fun and social. But it’s also where a lot of business gets done. If you have any kind of interest in the Cornish hospitality and catering community then you cannot afford to miss the wide range of opportunities presented by Expowest Cornwall. Expowest Cornwall takes place in Wadebridge from Tuesday 1st to Thursday 3rd March 2016. For more information about the show, to book a stand or simply register to attend, use the details below.

HEART of the village I
Enjoy fine food and a wonderful atmosphere at the Hawkins Arms, a delightful traditional pub in the village of Probus.
n the heart of the village of Probus, between Truro and St Austell, lies the Hawkins Arms, an establishment that embraces the best of both worlds in its traditional village setting. The social hub of its village, The Hawkins Arms has gone through several incarnations with the first record of a pub on the current site in the will of Sir Christopher Hawkins (1758-1829). The original name ‘The Queens’ changed to The Hawkins Arms in his lifetime, when Probus was a renowned centre for sport and its gathering of thousands. Pubs then were full of noisy talk, bad beer and even worse cider. Current tenants, Giles and Nina, however, have transformed it once again, serving delicious food and drink befitting the location. Giles and Nina have completely revised the pub, with the help of their chef Tom O’Brien and the team, creating a vibrant and atmospheric place to catch up with friends or family. A recent independent survey, on behalf of St Austell Brewery, found the Hawkins Arms to be the only pub in Cornwall to achieve 100% on quality of beer, service and cleanliness. Chef Tom, a firm believer in promoting the fine local and seasonal produce, learned his trade at the luxury Nare Hotel in Veryan.
Tom’s new menu is fresh with farm produce locally sourced by Morgan Meats, Redruth, and includes dishes such as seared local duck breast with pulled leg, Pak Choi, roasted plum, sweet potato mash and duck jus. Giles and Nina are bringing a touch of class to a vibrant village, sometimes forgotten since the building of the bypass, aspiring to cement their pub as a firm contender on the local culinary map. “We’re proud of what we’ve achieved in such a short time”, says Giles. “Our concept is to change the way people approach their local pub. So, from a hearty breakfast served from 10am, through to a home-cooked menu and Tapas served all day, we trust that our customers are fully satisfied.” Nina adds: “After all, what could be better than sitting in a warm friendly atmosphere beside the log burner, enjoying a Sunday roast, or when summer comes, sitting in the spacious beer garden with a refreshing pint?” The Hawkins Arms is one to keep an eye out for with many dates for the diary, including regular quiz evenings and popular music nights, holding a free acoustic night on the last Monday of every month, as well as speciality dining evenings, using the new barbeque. Keep posted with upcoming events and happenings on the Facebook page.

Oysters aren’t just good for the soul, they’re good for the body too.
Oysters are packed full of protein and loaded with essential minerals. A single portion of oysters can provide more than the recommended daily intake of zinc, iron and selenium, all of which are important for healthy cell function. Where better to enjoy these wonderful fruits of the sea than The Ferryboat Inn on the Helford River? Overlooking the beds of the Wright Brothers’ Duchy oyster farm, they don’t come fresher than this. f you love to tuck into a good old-fashioned, no-nonsense carvery, served with all the trimmings, then you’d better make your way over to a Kernow Carvery. The portfolio began with The Quintrell Inn near Newquay, swiftly followed by The Highwayman Dobwalls, near Liskeard, with a third, The Smugglers Inn, now open at Seaton near Looe. The offering has so far proved a roaring success, thanks to the informal family atmosphere, fantastic no-fuss food and disabled access. Each location offers its own unique charms, but one thing that unites them all is the delicious, locally-sourced produce and a warm welcome on your arrival. February half term entertainment at the Quintrell includes Emmazdad, from 4pm to 6pm on Monday, and pig racing from 7pm to 9pm on Thursday.

g n i r i p s n I confidence! Mandy catches up with Kim Conchie, Chief Executive of Cornwall Chamber of Commerce.
A
words by:
Mandy Milano
rriving on a wet and stormy, dark Monday afternoon and being enveloped by this lovely man in a great big bear hug reinforces Amanda Winwood’s article about the importance of hugging! Kim talks passionately about the small businesses of Cornwall – how his job is to speak out for them as well as inspire and guide. “But quite often”, he tells me, “it’s enough just to get business people together to meet and talk, maybe do some business together, but more importantly, just to know they are not alone! Believe me, running your own company can be a lonely business, and meeting others in the same boat can be enough to keep you going.” I can only think that his enormous warmth and openhearted approach has won over many a bureaucracy-weary, company director. It is hard to stay cynical or bad tempered in his presence for long! He just exudes love of life, love of people and a huge
passion for Cornwall. When I had mentioned to others that I was going to see Kim, I got the greatest number of heartfelt: “Oh, do give him my love!” that I have had for anyone I’ve met in Cornwall… and I’ve met a few. Kim has always considered Cornwall as home, his mum is from Cury and family holidays were spent in Cury on the Lizard (Poldhu is his favourite beach!). So after selling his company, Brass Tacks, a successful contract publishing and website design business in London, he was finally able to make the move. “It was always our plan to live in Cornwall, for us the discussion was never: Scotland, Wales or Cornwall? It was Truro, Falmouth or Cury? With three young children, we decided that Cury was just a bit too remote. Then Sarah, my wife, woke one morning and said: the whole point of moving to Cornwall is to live by the sea! So Falmouth it was… and we just love it!” He continued to work for his old company, commuting to London and then Bristol a few days a

month before finally giving up the commute and working from home in Falmouth. “But I really didn’t enjoy working from home! I think I’m far too sociable an animal to work on my own, so when I saw the job for Chief Exec of the Chamber advertised, I leapt at the chance both to help make a difference in the Duchy, but also to get the buzz of being part of a team again!” he adds with a grin. “We really do have some fabulous businesses, run by exciting entrepreneurs who have made an active choice to live and work in Cornwall for the lifestyle! I am passionate that Cornwall’s future is going to look very different. We can see this happening already with entrepreneurs putting lifestyle, location and family as equal to profit as a mark of success, and people outside Cornwall aspire to be here. And… the public sector has a huge role in driving the economy here – just by dint of scale and the size of contracts and their supply chains. It is really important for me to help get as much of that business kept in the county.” And talking of work/life balance, Kim is a trustee of various organisations in the Duchy including: BF Adventure, Creative
Kernow and Chair of Governors at Truro School, so time off is really important. He says: “Sarah and I do adore living in Falmouth; my regular ‘stretch’ is walking from Falmouth to Maenporth and back, though we also love Mullion Cove to the Lizard, with a pint or two at the Top House; but I do get a lift back! I try and watch Falmouth play rugby, but family time is really important to me.” His great, great, aunt was married to Harold Harvey, the only Cornish artist in the Newlyn School, which has given him a lifelong love of art from the Newlyn School. “If our three children weren’t so determined to keep us poor we’d have quite a collection by now”, he adds with a smile. His wife is a dentist working three days a week in Truro, as Kim explains: “It is good to have something worthwhile to do, to put something back – we are just so lucky to live in this wonderful place!”

KICK-START THE SPRING CLEAN Get the house sparkling without the hassle using this fantastic range of cleaners from HBH Woolacotts. Spring is merrily around the corner and with it comes the annual spring clean. So, what better way to prepare than to equip yourself with some helpful homecare tools from HBH Woolacotts? Before we look at any products, let's have a look at our options and explain a little about the differences. Steam cleaner, stick cleaner or regular old vacuum cleaner; each have their own quirks and qualities. Steam cleaners are great for hard surfaces and encrusted grime, stick cleaners take the functionality of traditional vaccums and mix that with the ease of use of a handheld. But for when you need power, the wired cylinder vacuum has no substitute.
Full steam ahead
Steam cleaners are typically used for hard flooring, offering unparalleled levels of hygiene without needing to irradiate your immediate surroundings. The steam cleanses and penetrates, able to remove even the most stalwart grime, stains, mould or fungus. With an impeccably fast warm up time and strong yet light-weight design, the Vax S2S is an unbelievable bargain at £39.99. Perfect for any hard flooring.
Go cordless
Incredibly light and ergonomic, stick cleaners have revolutionised how the modern family cleans. With a rechargeable battery pack and ample storage, the convenience makes keeping your home neat and tidy easy. No more tripping over the cables or hefting Henry up the stairs. With 20 minutes runtime from a full charge, detachable handheld option, and its bagless design, the Morphy Richards SuperVac is a perfect foray into the world of cordless stick cleaners.
Powered up
Sometimes a stick cleaner is just not enough. If you have a large family with a big house and pets, a stick cleaner may lack the power and capacity you need. When the job is too big for a handheld, a classic vacuum cleaner such as the Dyson DC41Animal can more than handle it. With its agile ball movement system and bagless design, convenience and usability in a vacuum have never been better.

t’s that time of year again, when garden catalogues are dusted off, bulbs start to burst into flower and the blossom starts to appear on the trees. But maybe like me, your own garden is looking rather tatty and dull, so having resolved not to have another dull garden next winter I paid a visit to the Winter Garden at Pine Lodge Gardens. There are plenty of wonderful ideas to bring colour and structure to any garden next winter. And, in over 30 acres of themed gardens, there are ideas for every season. It’s the 300th anniversary of the birth of Capability Brown, who did so much to change the face of English gardens; it’s a great year to visit one of Cornwall’s beautiful gardens – for ideas and a great day out. Caerhays Castle and Gardens are holders of the National Magnolia Collection, which always make a spectacular display and perfect for a springtime visit; the gardens open from 22nd February to 19th June. Or for magnificent views over Plymouth Sound try Trematon Castle Gardens near Saltash, open from 28th April. There’s a miniature mediaeval castle with a minimalist regency villa and the wonderful wild flowers, woodland and orchard have been intensified with bold borders full of scent, colour, and texture. In the west of the county, discover the magic of the beautiful valley garden at Trebah, with over four miles of footpath winding down to the private beach on the Helford – with glimpses out over the beautiful estuary as you walk through vibrant tunnels of colour. Perfect for ideas for your own garden. Then when your ideas get slightly ahead of your gardening abilities and equipment: call in the professionals with Mid Cornwall Landscaping who are celebrating 30 successful years of design, landscaping and maintenance. They have established a great reputation across Cornwall, with no job too small. Their friendly, professional team will help you with new designs and planting, and then carry out all the work for you. The perfect way to get the perfect garden this spring!

Discovering the winter garden
Pine Lodge Gardens in St Austell is one garden that you can enjoy all year round.
Y
ou don’t have to wait for sunshine to enjoy beautiful landscaping and clever planting. Now is the perfect time to visit Cornwall’s Winter Garden, one of the largest in the South West, at Pine Lodge Gardens. Pine Lodge Gardens supports the NGS (National Garden Scheme) on 6th February with an open charity day celebrating the Winter Garden and the Snowdrop. Owner Chang Li explains the garden’s design influences: “We believe great design comes from the mind and the heart. We’re passionate about creating innovative and exciting designs, involving unique
characteristics of each project. Our designs aim to enhance the visitors’ experience while co-existing harmoniously with nature.” The unique gardens began to evolve back in the early 1980s, with planting carefully planned to provide four-season appeal. There are drifts of spring bulbs, beds full of herbaceous summer plants, scores of autumn-leaf colouring shrubs and, of course, the splendid Winter Garden. Pine Lodge Gardens were first opened as a fundraiser for St Austell Lions Club when amazingly over 2000 people turned up to view the gardens – and loved it. From this the idea to open the gardens to the public

regularly was born. The gardens now contain the largest collection of plants in the county, as surveyed by the Cornwall Gardens Trust. Today, filling 30 acres with a series of unique gardens, all with a different theme and where thousands of fascinating plants from home and abroad have settled comfortably together, Pine Lodge Gardens has emerged to provide a new style of Cornish garden. Throughout, there are magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons, and azaleas, all plants which are indicative of a Cornish garden. Complementing these are gardens full of rare and unusual plants, many of which originate from the Mediterranean and the Southern Hemisphere. In the Japanese Zen Garden, originally planted with seeds from the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, a mirrorlike ornamental pond creates a magical, calm and tranquil feeling. Borrowed landscape effortlessly looks towards tracts of open parkland dotted with ancient oaks, reminiscent of a ‘Capability’ Brown landscape which flows down toward the lake, hosting wildfowl such as ducks and geese. Chang Li explains: “Our design theory is similar to the creation of a painting... Are the strokes bold and sure or are they nuanced and restrained? Does the artist use many strokes of different kinds or just a few, brilliantly placed?” The Pinetum Park area, planted in the shape of an amphitheatre, is maturing magnificently, while the wonderful threeacre Winter Garden, now celebrating its 10th anniversary, is filled with scent, flowers and interesting foliage. As each themed area flows effortlessly into the
next, the winding paths lead to the elegant ‘Monet’ style Wisteria-clad bridge, with glimpses of the chocolate box thatched cottage in the cobbled courtyard. Cottage garden borders and water features characterise this area, in contrast with the wide-open spaces beyond. From the lake in the parkland to the pond in the cottage garden, water is an important and constant theme. This really is a place to both relax and reflect; allow your senses to be awakened by the fragrances, sights, sounds and tactile plants on display. Something to look forward to for 2016 is the new theme ‘The Hidden Gardeners’, as Chang Li explains: “It pays tribute to those creatures who contribute so much to the garden by way of pollinators, composters, natural pest control and who work closely with the more visible human gardeners who keep the gardens looking so good. It hopes to get younger visitors excited about nature. There are so many levels of interest in a good garden. The more you know, the more you experience, the more you can bring to your understanding of it.” This well-considered, impeccably maintained garden is brimming with interest, even in the depths of winter. There’s a reason why Pine Lodge Gardens are open all year round and that’s because there’s so much to see. So, why not visit and enjoy this garden as much as I did?

From boat to stage, Nadia Pendleton speaks to Fisherman’s Friend Jason Nicholas about potting the best catch, singing to thousands, and starting a shellfish business with friends.

nterviewing fisherman Jason Nicholas on a cold, wet and windy January morning, cuppa in hand, while he was rolling on the waves on his boat Three J’s made me thankful for mobile phones. Jason wouldn’t swap places with me for anything, he explains: “Being able to go out on a daily basis, often seeing dolphins and basking sharks, whilst doing the job you love, is almost perfect. Obviously the sun doesn’t always shine and winds stay calm, but it’s still better than any job ashore!” This humble Padstow man has been fishing since he was 16. It’s a labour of love, a tough business and a hard lifestyle that many young people shy away from, especially in the modern economic climate, but there is clearly something in Jason’s blood that draws him to the sea, unquestioningly.
After a long week at sea, Jason and his fisherman friends would get together for a drink and a laugh. The laughs would turn to chorus as old sea shanties were sung to the sound of the accordion and drum, and so, the now famed Fisherman’s Friends were born. “On Friday nights, we’d be singing on the harbourside and collecting for a different charity weekly. Singing with your friends with not only the back drop of Port Isaac harbour but the amazing Cornish sunset is pretty stunning!” The group’s reputation for lively, often bawdy shows quickly spread, and soon they were racking up Glastonbury slots, national TV appearances and celebrity admirers. Balancing a life on the stage and on the boat might be hard for some, but Jason explains it pairs with the fishing perfectly. “Most tour dates are during the winter

months, generally when the weather is not too good for fishing! The best times for me are the festivals during the summer when I can go to sea all week and then sing at a festival in front of thousands of people whilst enjoying a beer or two with my mates! It’s nice to see the sun coming up in the mornings whilst at sea and then see it setting whilst singing!” The latest venture to come from a few pints with friends is the Padstow Shellfish Co. Launched last year, it sells Jas’ sustainably caught crab and lobster which is then freshly cooked, hand-picked and in the customers’ hands within hours. Jason had long lamented to his old friends Anne Vivian, Pete and Emma McLardy that he caught and landed his shellfish in Padstow, but had to travel out of town to get it picked professionally, only to bring it back to the harbour to sell it on. They knew there had to be a better way. Pete explains: “The four of us reckoned we could have a go. People were becoming far more aware of the origins of food they were eating. This was our opportunity; we knew Jason could supply the freshest crab to our own processing unit and, as we have proved, we could find a market for it.” Padstow Shellfish Co. crab and lobsters are now
highly sought after by chefs, delis and cooks from the Duchy to Dubai. Jason gets out on his boat whenever Mother Nature (and his singing schedule) allows. He uses the potting method of catching crab and lobster which is the most sustainable form of fishing; it’s small scale and selective, berried egg carrying females are returned alive and it does little or no damage to the sea bed. He is equally proud of his catch as his shows: “Our beautiful crabs and lobsters are caught off the gorgeous north Cornwall shores; they are handled with care and attention from pot to plate within 24 hours. Supermarkets shellfish could be anything up to a week out of the water. I can guarantee traceability and that’s what my customers love.” “Being a Padstow fisherman, supplying people with good quality crab and lobster and singing in the Fisherman’s Friends means a very proud Cornish boy!” It’s all in a day’s work.

The incredible sense of light and space; the views down the five-acre garden and valley out to sea; the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on Cornwall’s north coast… It’s hard not to be inspired by Oakfield, a three-bedroomed property that combines the best of contemporary design (underfloor heating and en suite bathrooms) with traditional features (wood beams, log burner and large AGA). Situated high on the valley in the pretty hamlet of Rosecare, Oakfield takes full advantage of every season. Come the warmer months, throw open the French doors and enjoy drinks as the sun sets over the ocean. In winter, light the fire and storm watch through the floor-toceiling windows – from bed if you’re feeling really lazy. On the extensive wrap-around terrace you’ll also find a barbeque area with seating and hot tub, all with the same far-reaching views. Alternatively, the first floor galleried games room makes for another place to hide away. Dogs are also welcome and will love exploring the property’s grounds. Making people smile for 15 years
Ask Mark Durnall, Principal at Pure Dental Health about Dental Implants… What are Dental Implants?
They’re a great treatment for replacing missing or failing teeth, and securing loose dentures. Implants can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, even the complete replacement of all teeth. A titanium implant replaces the root of the natural tooth. The implant is then used to anchor replacement teeth like crowns, bridges or dentures.
What are the advantages?
For many people their permanence, durability, and natural appearance and feel mean greatly increased self-esteem and confidence. Plus the enjoyment of food again.
Can anyone have an Implant?
Not everyone is suitable, but the majority are. They are not just for Hollywood stars and often more affordable than most people think.
How long will an Implant last?
If good oral hygiene is maintained, with regular brushing, flossing and dental visits then implants can last a long time, even a lifetime.

Healt h & well being
This month, Amanda recommends some natural ways to rejuvenate with the power of hugs.
I
nspired by our editor, Mandy, over a very good cuppa in the lovely Nauti But Ice Café in Porthleven, this month I am writing about hugs. Well it is Valentine’s Day and the month of love. So… let’s start with the power of hugs. We use hugs in our Made for Life Days when people really need a good, proper, long hug. Think about it… how do you feel after a really good hug? Here’s the science and five good reasons to hug: Hugging 1. Hugging releases oxytocin, a chemical that has been linked to happiness and social bonding. Research shows that oxytocin also promotes the feelings of trust and devotion. 2. The longer the hug the better! To fully release the oxytocin in your body and the person you are hugging, the hug needs to be at least six seconds. 20 seconds is optimum hugging time! 3. When you hug your loved ones you strengthen your bond to each other. 4. Guess what? Hugs can actually reduce your blood pressure. They activate pressure receptors in your body, sending signals to the part of your brain responsible for lowering your blood pressure. Romantic hugs keep the heart strong, literally!
Hug yourself Giving yourself a regular hug or treat is important. I had a lovely spa day at the award-winning Carbis Bay Spa recently. Bliss… just watching the sea from the hot tub was absolute heaven. There are loads of gorgeous spas in Cornwall with special winter offers… so give yourself a hug and treat yourself to a pamper. Treat at home This bath routine will soothe, nourish and detox. Put on your favourite chill-out music, light a candle, pour in your home-blended bath salts (see recipe in box) and relax… Quick tip: Make a note of the time – until you really get used to taking ‘me-time’ it’s easy to think you have been relaxing in your bath for ages – when actually, only about ten minutes have passed! Try for at least 20 minutes in your bath.
Homemade soothe & relax bath salts Ingredients
1/4 cup of Epsom salts 1/8 cup of sea salt (Cornish Seasalt or Himalayan are great) 4-5 drops of (ideally organic) essential oil – lavender, sweet orange or rose are my favourites Method
• Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl • Add the bath salts to hot running water • Lie back and relax!
Hugs from Amanda x Amanda is well known in the health and wellbeing industy for her organic range ‘Spiezia’ and also as founder of the Made For Life Foundation, working with people recovering from cancer.
5. Hugs reduce stress. Gentle human touch lowers output of cortisol, a stress hormone. It also increases serotonin and dopamine, two brain chemicals that make you feel good. But who needs science? Hugging feels good!

The little things If you were to move into a care home, what would be most important to you?
W
e know how difficult thinking about care can be. There are so many options – moving into a residential or nursing home, taking on community carers, going into respite or becoming a carer yourself – and with every option often comes a personal challenge. Choosing the right care for your loved one is rarely easy. There are lots of fears around moving into a care home but one of the deepest anxieties is around the fear of losing one’s identity. A person’s identity is made up of thousands of little moments, relationships and preferences. The clothes we wear, the strange habits and pleasures we have, our favourite music or literature, the way we eat and sleep, how we make our tea or coffee, how we wash ourselves and clean our teeth, our ‘ways’ – it is all these little choices that make us who we are. It is our choices that make us unique. When someone loses the capacity to make their own choices or is unable to physically care for themselves, their individuality falls into the hands of their carer. Now, while the national minimum standards do set out the importance for all carers to treat people as individuals, there can sometimes be a lack of understanding of what this means and how it can be translated into a care package that meets the individual’s needs. At Cornwall Care, each home resident and client in the community has a bespoke care package that is not only tailored to their individual care needs but is also focussed on their personal preferences. Each person is provided a book that includes
everything the individual and family feel is relevant to their experience; things like food preferences, interests, hobbies and favourite activities. Sometimes, it is the little things that mean the most. Clothing, for example, is one of the most obvious and deliberate expressions of individuality. Our clothes do more for us than simply keep us warm; they express our personality and mood, and can often have emotional significance as well. This is why looking after residents’ clothing is so much more important than it may appear. The same applies to other personal items like make-up or jewellery, which often have emotional connections with the past and can lead to conversations about the people and places in that person’s life. When you move into a care home, your belongings become your connection with yourself and your past. Your possessions become so much more than just ‘stuff’. So when you think about care for your loved one, remember to ask yourself – if I were going into a care home, what would be important to me? You may find it’s something smaller than you think, like that first cup of tea in the morning.

Health
Up and running Knee replacement at Duchy Hospital will soon have you back to your old self again.
O
ften as we get older, many of us might need knee replacement surgery to quell severe knee pain caused by arthritis, when other treatments such as painkillers, weight loss, and physiotherapy have failed. Generally patients are over 60, but some might need it much earlier because of trauma or other forms of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis. Thankfully, knee replacement is now a routine and extremely successful procedure. Incredibly, 521 replacements were performed at Duchy Hospital in 2015, supported by the experienced team of theatre staff, nurses and physiotherapists. According to the data available, Duchy Hospital had the 4th best health gain results following knee replacement in the country (Health and Social Care Information Centre). Knee replacements typically last ten to 15 years, but many will last longer. If it does wear out, it’s usually possible to do a revision procedure, although while results are good, they may not match those of the primary procedure. The aim of the operation is to get patients out of pain in daily activities, but it can also restore excellent function, enabling some to return to sport such as golf and tennis. “I have even had patients who have returned to running mountain marathons and ‘off piste’ skiing after a knee replacement”, explains Consultant Surgeon Andrew Lee, “but I don’t generally recommend such impact sports as it may affect the longevity of the replacement.” There are different forms, with partial knee replacements being possible if only part of the joint is affected, or total knee replacements if someone has more extensive deterioration. The advantage of a partial knee replacement is that it’s a smaller operation, has a lower rate of complications such as infection, people get over it more quickly, generally get a better range of movement and have a more normal feeling knee at the end of it. A hospital stay is normally around three to four days, when patients have lots of physiotherapy to get the knee bending and get walking again. On average, it
“I have even had patients who have returned to running mountain marathons and ‘off piste’ skiing after a knee replacement” Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Andrew Lee (right)
takes about six weeks to get over a partial replacement and about three months for a full knee replacement. It’s a painful procedure, taking a lot of hard work on the part of the patient to get their knee moving again, but the hard work is worth it to achieve better results. Patients go home on crutches for a few weeks, once confident about managing at home. Obviously there are risks to such a larger operation, such as infection, clots in the veins, risks of the anaesthetic, stiffness and revision procedures. Fortunately these complications are rare and most patients are more than pleased with the outcome.

hether it’s fantastic design ideas and build to redesign your garden, landscape design for commercial use, maintenance or a fabulous natural swimming pool, we have always loved MidCornwall Landscaping. So it seemed only right, at the start of their 30th year, to chat to owner Jacques Egbers about their story… and, it turns out that it could have all been so very different as he and his young family ended up in Cornwall by mistake! Jacques was born and educated in Holland; he has a degree in Organic Horticulture. Then deciding on a new life in Europe with his young wife and two very
young children, they opted for the South of France. So they set off with all their belongings and no real idea of what awaited them at the other end. “It was a complete mistake. What really happened is lost in time and family legend.” Jacques tells me with a smile. “But we got our directions a bit wrong and ended up by sheer chance and a lot of luck in Cornwall! I found work on an Organic Farm in St Mawes where we were welcomed as immigrants with open arms, and our love for Cornwall and its fantastic landscape really began. We have never looked back or had any regrets that we didn’t end up in France!” Over the next six years Jacques started to

use his degree and training, slowly drifting into landscaping in and around St Mawes. “Then in 1986 I decided to take a leap of faith and leave the farm and its tied cottage to start Mid Cornwall Landscaping. The motorbike with chainsaw strapped onto the back was my only mode of transport in the early days, and just a bit hairy on the narrow lanes!” Jacques adds: “So we moved to a cottage in Tregony and I worked for the first three years on the Roseland, designing and building landscape projects mainly for private homes. The business grew by word of mouth and I was soon employing two other landscapers.” Their reputation grew; Jacques explains that the company expanded by establishing relationships throughout Cornwall, and building trust with local and national companies as well as in the domestic market. “We slowly expanded year on year, growing organically; starting by working over the whole of Cornwall, and expanding into commercial contracts with Local Authorities and the construction industry in all aspects of garden design, landscaping and maintenance. More recently we have branched out further and been involved in the design and construction of many natural swimming ponds and pools, which fits well with the ethos of the business.” Then Jacques adds with a smile. “But, of course, our success is mainly due to our wonderful, reliable, extremely skilled staff, many of whom have been with MCL for over 20 years. We offer ongoing training, which keeps the staff interested in their
job whilst improving their skill sets. We are proud to be members of highly regarded landscape Association BALI. And the health and safety of our employees is very important to us, so we are fully accredited members of CHAS and Construction line.” The whole team are involved in the 30th anniversary celebrations and looking forward to the future. Jacques continues: “We thought it would be a great idea to give back to Cornwall and some of the companies and people we have worked with. So we decided on 30 trees; one for each of our 30 years in business, and we want to link the symbolic process of planting these trees to promoting sustainability. We are planting old Cornish varieties (for example Cornish Aromatic and Cornish Gilliflower) that are sadly dying out due to the influx of more well-known varieties.” Mid Cornwall Landscaping will be donating the trees to schools, carehomes and community-based projects. So, if you would like to receive a donated tree, do get in touch with them. And one day you might have the joy of picking and sampling your very own true Cornish apples courtesy of the lovely team at Mid Cornwall Landscaping.

Scandi-style meets coastal inspiration at Cornwall’s cutting edge property and interiors company.
words by:

H
ere at Cornwall Living we’re always on the look out for that special something and what we discovered at Coastal Spaces was certainly that. Founded by Sean Hodgson and Isabel Humphreys, and borne out of their shared passion for all things Cornish, Scandinavian, and coastal in the world of property and interiors, here’s a business which really does offer something quite unique. A gorgeous new space in Wadebridge is home to their new shop and showroom, which showcases Cornish and Scandinavian interiors and homewares, design office and boutique property agency. Although it’s a shop in the loosest sense of the word – many of the products on the shelves have an organic and handmade element, and all are beautifully designed and displayed making it feel like more of a gallery. Visitors are welcome to stop for a coffee while taking inspiration from one of the table top design books. And what you take back with you is something that will soften your home and evoke memories of summer days and sandy shores, all beautifully giftwrapped for that added touch. One of the most striking pieces Isabel has on display is The Cornish Chair Company’s lobster pot chair. The only one currently
in existence, this truly is a unique piece of furniture and the design is like nothing we have seen before. “We’re delighted to be working closely with Richard and Sonja Hooper of The Cornish Chair Company on such an iconic piece of furniture and we hope this is just the start of our collaboration, as we know there are lots more intriguing designs in Richard’s sketchbook” says Isabel. As for Sean, he’s busy helping individual clients design new homes: “We’ve seen a real upturn in those looking to add modernity to their homes – both signature replacement new-builds and highly contemporary extensions.” Many of Coastal Space’s clients are doing this with a view to adding value ahead of selling their home; but increasingly there are those seeking to add open-plan, light-filled modern family spaces to their existing property.

Keeping in character Avoid unsightly windows with innovative and elegant new frame designs fitted by Dawes & Windows.

C
ornwall is a beautiful and unique county, and this becomes even more apparent when one looks at the architecture. From picturesque country cottages to Georgian town houses, Cornwall has an incredible range of buildings, each with its own unique character. The windows and doors of a property contribute massively to the feel and look of a home, inside and out so, when it comes to replacing them, it can be a major challenge to retain the original charm. PVC windows have revolutionised the double glazing market over the years and the benefits are plentiful: nominal maintenance, wipe clean, thermal efficiency and cost just to name a few. The problem is you don’t really associate PVC with charm, character and traditional design, resulting either in period properties adorned with out-of-place PVC windows that don’t fit the property’s style, or costly wooden windows and the extensive maintenance that goes with them. Redruth based, family-run company Dawes & Windows has faced this problem time and again over the last ten years, providing double-glazing services all around Cornwall. Maintaining character when replacing windows and doors has become its speciality. Managing Director Phil Dawe says: “Normal PVC windows have limitations in terms of design, and trying to maintain a property’s character when installing PVC replacements is forever a challenge, but is always one of our main goals for our customers. The introduction of Residence
9 has given us a solution tailor-made to address this problem.” Residence 9 is a window system designed to replicate the 19th century flush sash timber windows. It can be considered for use in conservation areas due to its authentic appearance and its replication of the traditional construction of timber flush casement windows. This authentic design means that homeowners of older traditional properties now have a genuine PVC solution to their double-glazing needs. Phil continues: “With Residence 9, along with our existing range of PVC doors and windows, composite doors and roofline products, we now have the answer to any double glazing requirements for Cornish homes.” With the goal of providing customers with the very best products, installations attuned to the smallest details, providing customer service as it used to be and offering friendly and free, no-obligation quotes without a high pressure sales pitch, Dawes & Windows are trying to break the stereotype that purchasing double glazing needs to be a stressful experience. If you have a double glazing need call Phil, Alison or Alick at the office to see what they can do to help.

Energy Savings Heat pumps are typically between 30-50 percent cheaper to run than traditional systems. Replacing grid demand with renewable energy could mean annual savings above ÂŁ200.
Have you seen your heating bills rise in recent years and want to lower costs? Are you replacing your existing heating system and looking into your options?
Considering an Air Source Heat Pump could be well worth your while
The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) The RHI is a government scheme that pays customers for installing a renewable heating system. Customers are paid quarterly for every kilowatt-hour of renewable heat they generate, over a 7-year period. Domestic heat pump installations can earn over ÂŁ800 a year from the RHI.
Seven-year period
How does an Air Source Heat Pump work?
Savings made on energy bills combined with RHI payments mean that an air source heat pump could repay itself within seven years.
Air source systems function by drawing in low-grade heat from air surrounding a property and converting it into usable heat energy. The air drawn into the pump is compressed and mixed with a fluid which upgrades the temperature of the energy. As a result, a heat pump can output over three times the energy they require to run.
Excess generation from a solar array can power a heat pump. This increases the utilisation of the solar energy and reduces the cost of running the heat pump, increasing the benefit of both.

ornwall being Cornwall, a lot of houses in the West Country are not connected to the national gas mains. As such, many Cornish families turn to oil and Mitchell and Webber are Cornwall’s premier purveyors of home heating oil. With the opening of Mitchell and Webber’s new Scorrier showroom and the introduction of Rayburn’s new Eco-Connect system, there’s never been a better time to consider your home heating options. Modern oil fired boilers are reaching towards over a 90% efficiency rating, are cheaper to run and generally more reliable than other methods of heating. Advances in technology have also allowed for modern boilers to have less of an ecological impact and produce less greenhouse gasses. To celebrate the new showroom’s opening, AGA-accredited chef David Pengelly will be running in-store cooking demonstrations, showing you how you can get the most out of your cast iron cooker. If you are in the market for, or have recently come into possession of a Rayburn and are curious
about its capabilities, then look no further as all will be explained. Due to the rural nature of Cornwall, Mitchell and Webber pride themselves on the fact that they can deliver almost anywhere in the county. With over a century of experience to guide them and their new Planned Delivery service, you’ll never find yourself stuck without oil again. Mitchell and Webber use your past usage statistics to calculate when you will need refuelling and, if your tank is accessible, you don’t even need to be home. The service is totally free; twin this with their Boiler Care Plan and you’ll barely even have to consider your heating again, until it’s time to turn the thermostat up. The experts at Mitchell and Webber can cater for your family’s energy needs, with renewable sources used as and when possible. Using their technical knowledge and information about your home, the engineers can create a bespoke and suitable home heating solution. Working closely with boiler manufactures such as Worcester Bosch, Mitchell and Webber bring the

latest technologies straight to the consumer and work together to train up their own engineers to the manufactures standard. Eco-Connect brings the convenience and technology and safety of 2016 to your home heating. Allowing for a more effective and at the same time more
economical heating system, Eco-Connect ensures that energy is intelligently drawn from the most ecologically friendly source available at the time. For minimum load tasks this allows your boiler to act more economically, using residual heat from your AGA or Rayburn instead. The set up safely connects together multiple appliances round your home to form a highly efficient heat exchanging system that operates automatically. The new showroom includes their wide range of colourful Rayburns: 600s and 400s with special in-store deals, working examples of the Eco-Connect system and installed solar systems and the aforementioned in store demonstrations by David Pengelly. For more information on the Ecoconnect, range cookers, heating or a free no-obligation quote contact Mitchell and Webber and see how they can make life more comfortable for you.

Artist Caroline Cleave discusses her life’s passions, discovering she had cancer and running a workshop for Made For Life Foundation.

here I create, there I am true – that’s the quote pinned to my studio wall. Rarely found without a pencil in my hand, with an insatiable appetite for art and design, it is an affirmation that I couldn’t wish to be in a more honest and happy place. As a child, my father had incredible talent and could sculpt, paint and draw. I have memories of him creating stunning hats for me out of very simple materials for the annual school hat parade. As an art teacher, I taught in an inner city Bristol school until I returned to Cornwall with my husband Jon, a proper Cornishman with true Cornish roots in his beloved county. I was quickly drawn to the rich cultural arts events and earned my spurs getting involved heavily within the scene. I also discovered gig rowing, a fantastic and thrilling sport. I’ve always loved the sea so I felt right at home. Fit and happy, all seemed good. But after a routine examination I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was devastated… especially as there was no history of it in my family. I’m a positive person and the doctors and nurses were wonderful, but I still found myself ill prepared for the journey that lay ahead. Someone said it’s like being behind a glass wall and, although all your friends and family are with you, they are on one side and you are on the other. Like many people having chemotherapy, I didn’t want to lose my hair. With a wig being out of the question, I remembered the hats of my childhood. Crafting these beautiful hats and head wraps made me feel good again and gave me back the confidence I had lost. Through my experiences I had learned what was important to me in life, and through that grew some of the central themes of my art: time and place. Recently discovered by Emma Ball Ltd, my designs are now distributed across the UK. I’m also regularly commissioned to illustrate for companies and charities that align with my own beliefs. Having met Juliette Hathway and the team at Made For Life Foundation, witnessing all the wonderful work that they are doing firsthand, I was inspired to get involved myself with a workshop.
