And just to show what a small world Cornwall is, the Old Fish Cellar in Mousehole was converted by Chris and his interior designer, wife, Camilla. Chris is a lifeboatman who shot the cover of our October edition… small world indeed! In our quest to ﬁnd the most unusual property conversions, we’ve searched far and wide for iconic Cornish buildings, large and small, which have been lovingly brought back to life.

ornwall’s unique charm owes a lot to its beautiful vernacular architecture – engine houses, stone cottages, agricultural buildings, Methodist chapels. Sadly many have since fallen into disrepair, but many are being injected with new life. As Matthew Rowe, of Savills Cornwall, notes: “Inland there are so many hidden gems to discover with fascinating histories.” Lucy, from Boutique Retreats, adds: “A converted property – whether it’s a seventeenth-century barn, a tiny ﬁsherman’s cottage or a lovely old chapel – offers something truly unique. Cornwall has these in spades.” Of course, some rightly question whether iconic historic buildings, held dear to the public, should be converted. But surely it’s a ﬁtting tribute allowing them to stand tall for another 100 years, rather than letting them crumble and be lost forever? And one thing that’s certain is that the new caretakers care passionately about these buildings and their heritage too. Lucy continues: “People tend to take on these kind of properties on a very personal level – they are always a labour of love.” So this month, we celebrate the rebirth of some of these fallen giants. And what’s even better, we’ve searched far and wide to select some that are currently available either as holiday lets or on the property market. The Old Fish Cellar

Landmarks really don’t get much more iconic (or Cornish) than the engine house. These mighty structures were built to pump water out of the mines, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But when the industry ground to a halt, the engines were mercilessly ripped out for scrap, leaving the roofless shells to the elements. Thankfully, it was a happy ending for Wheal Rose, on the outskirts of Redruth, lovingly brought back to life by current owner, Steve Eagle. “The Engine House was built around the 1850s but apparently never used”, explains Steve. “It was an empty shell”, he says, “but as the granite walls were sound, it made it a question of filling in the holes.” But it wasn’t all that simple – being a heritage site, even colour palettes were carefully scrutinised for authenticity! “Work with the Conservation Officer throughout the project”, says Steve, “and glean as much information from people involved with industrial archaeology.” Steve continues: “We have had a great deal of pleasure from the engine house, our home from home for almost 20 years.” This unique building is now up for sale, through Humberts, a bittersweet moment for Steve: “We want to spend our free time with our grandchildren, but we’ll still come to Cornwall and when we do, we’ll look at the old mine and think: we built that.” Contact Humberts for details (www.humberts.com).

This building in Mousehole may not have had quite so lofty beginnings – starting life as an unassuming fish cellar – but what it lacks in stature, it certainly makes up for in style. The Old Fish Cellar, the work of interior designer Camilla Banks (www. camillabanksinteriordesign.co.uk) and her cinematographer husband, Chris Yacoubian, is a masterclass in design, utilising a monochrome colour palette, beaten copper sinks, reclaimed materials and bold utilitarian lighting to great effect. “We love a challenge and The Old Fish Cellar certainly was that”, says Camilla, “Disused and unoccupied for 40 years, it was a dark and damp cellar when we bought it, used by fishermen to store their nets. But this is exactly what attracted us to it – it had character! Compact in size, we embraced the New York loft style living, creating an open-plan studio space, just enough for a couple’s retreat. We wanted it to be functional as well as stylish, and its raw industrial style with a nod to the nautical was inspired by the space and its surroundings.” Camilla continues: “I remember holidays as a kid, when we’d rock up at a cottage and the first thing mum would do is clean everything. A few miles down from Port Isaac on the north coast is a beautifully renovated Methodist chapel, a building as breathtaking as its location. Built around 1850, the chapel was later converted to a glass store, and then a dwelling, in 1990, before being wonderfully restored by Jeremy Goring. The original conversion was done fairly economically and unsympathetically, so it was largely a case of starting again: stripping it back, opening up the ceiling, exposing the original beams and removing all the fake windows and cladding. “It had almost no light”, explains Jeremy “and a very low, dark wooden ceiling.” The roof was completely

removed, rebuilt, then put back using all the original beams and original Delabole slates. “The guys who did the 1990 conversion got one thing right – putting the living space upstairs to maximise on the incredible views – who needs a view while asleep?” And the views really are sensational – lush greenery with the shimmering blue sea beckoning behind, framed by the huge arched windows; the interiors furnished in a cool, understated and contemporary style. The whole place exudes luxury and ﬁne craftsmanship. “We were very lucky to work with a really good architect, James Morford, and extremely good, reliable builders, Barry and Adam Purchase. Each time a diﬃcult challenge presented itself, they came up with a clever solution. Barry copied a missing beam and perfectly matched it to the original 150-year-old ones.” So, what tips does Jeremy offer to anyone embarking on a major renovation project? “Don't do it!” he laughs. “But if you must, make sure you work with someone you trust.” You also have to be realistic about the costs involved. “Think of a budget then triple it. Try your very best not to cut corners or make false economies. Easier said than done!” Of course, respecting a building’s history is fundamental. “The Chapel is in National Trust land”, explains Jeremy, “we worked closely with them to make sure the new elements were more respectful of the heritage.” Lucy, from Boutique Retreats, adds: “The aim is to celebrate the building’s history and make its soul shine, not erase it – and in our experience our guests are always drawn to places which have character and are a bit unusual.” If you fancy a stay at this little slice of paradise, contact Boutique Retreats (www.boutique-retreats.co.uk).

Matthew Rowe of Savills says: “In our view, the pending 30th March 2016 sale completion deadline will create an initial rush of demand from those seeking to avoid the additional 3% tax. So we are urging would-be vendors to act now to bring their property to the market if they want to capture these motivated buyers. Bosoljack Nestled in a stunning creekside location at Port Navas, on the banks of the Helford, you’ll ﬁnd Bosoljack – Cornish for ‘house in the sun by the creek’, which pretty much sums it up. This light, peaceful sanctuary was once a single storey agricultural store, probably holding manure or coal. But from humble origins, the property has been transformed into a unique waterside retreat. Well, as they say, you can alter a building but you can’t alter its location. And locations really don’t get much better! The agricultural store was sold by the owners of the adjacent farmhouse around 1927, when another storey was added. But it wasn’t until Robin and Rachael Sopp of Perranwell bought the property in the 1980s that Bosoljack really came into its own. Instantly beguiled by the stunning location, they renovated the space – then a mess of higgledy-piggledy rooms – creating the bright, open-plan retreat as enjoyed today. “All the wood was covered in thick white paint”, explains Robin, “which we stripped back to reveal the grain.” They also gave the

property a smile with the clever addition of a balcony, capitalising on the spectacular and inimitable views over the creek. But the water is not simply a treat for the eye, to be admired from afar – the property comes with its own access to the creek, a real asset, and perfect for exploring the magical waterways of this incredible location. Fort Picklecombe As Chrissy Phillips of Helpful Holidays explains, “The history of Fort Picklecombe is as curious as its name. Converted into 103 apartments in the 1970s, the fabulous uninterrupted views across Plymouth Sound from this striking building perched on a promontory are a clue to its former life.” “Commissioned in the mid 19th century, Fort Picklecombe was one of ‘Palmerston’s Follies’, a chain of coastal forts to protect Devonport Naval Base from the frightening French.” However, due to international power shifts the French never actually arrived, and the threat that first prompted the building of these wonderful, imposing structures was nullified before many were completed – a costly and embarrassing episode. t Ives, with its rows of cobbled streets, thriving art scene and independent boutiques and bistros, is not only a bustling harbour town, but also a growing foodie destination. Thousands of visitors ďŹ&#x201A;ock here in the summer to soak up the sun, so we made the most of the quieter season to enjoy a well-earned waterside lunch with the beach below all to ourselves. The second restaurant from the Porthminster Cafe, the Kitchen sits in prime position on the harbour front. Huge

windows provide incredible views across the bay, whatever the weather. The decor is fresh, urban and understated. We chose a table at the back so we could take in the views and the ambiance, and we were not disappointed. The chilli crab claw starter was a beauty, with its own implements and a generous portion of prawn crackers. Great fresh crabmeat, sweet and succulent. The anchovy and sage fritters I had were savoury, sweet, light and delicious.

I opted for the fish special of the day – panfried brill with a white crab and caper beurre noisette and steamed new potatoes. The fish was delicate and perfectly complemented by the rich, piquant sauce. The potatoes, fresh and slightly earthy, made the ideal simple accompaniment. The hake was a more substantial dish, the meaty fish well matched with the mussels and chorizo. The dark green parsley sauce worked nicely and the fried potatoes added to the robust, hearty dish. Wine is by the glass or the bottle, and what a joy to discover that a large glass was indeed large! Never one to pass up a cheese board, my dining companion was especially delighted with the blue Brie. I couldn’t resist a taster dessert with my coffee – Cornish fudge with seaweed salt. Sweet, creamy and with the

faint taste and smell of the sea, this little dish was a great way to round off a thoroughly enjoyable lunch. If you are passing through St Ives, pop up the stairs and treat yourself to fabulous fresh food, great views and good service.

Enjoy ﬁne food and a wonderful atmosphere at the Hawkins Arms, a delightful traditional pub in the village of Probus.

n the heart of the village of Probus, between Truro and St Austell, lies the Hawkins Arms, an establishment that embraces the best of both worlds in its traditional village setting. The social hub of its village, The Hawkins Arms has gone through several incarnations with the first record of a pub on the current site in the will of Sir Christopher Hawkins (1758-1829). The original name ‘The Queens’ changed to The Hawkins Arms in his lifetime, when Probus was a renowned centre for sport and its gathering of thousands. Pubs then were full of noisy talk, bad beer and even worse cider. Current tenants, Giles and Nina, however, have transformed it once again, serving delicious food and drink befitting the location. Giles and Nina have completely revised the pub, with the help of their chef Tom O’Brien and the team, creating a vibrant and atmospheric place to catch up with friends or family. A recent independent survey, on behalf of St Austell Brewery, found the Hawkins Arms to be the only pub in Cornwall to achieve 100% on quality of beer, service and cleanliness. Chef Tom, a firm believer in promoting the fine local and seasonal produce, learned his trade at the luxury Nare Hotel in Veryan.

Tom’s new menu is fresh with farm produce locally sourced by Morgan Meats, Redruth, and includes dishes such as seared local duck breast with pulled leg, Pak Choi, roasted plum, sweet potato mash and duck jus. Giles and Nina are bringing a touch of class to a vibrant village, sometimes forgotten since the building of the bypass, aspiring to cement their pub as a ﬁrm contender on the local culinary map. “We’re proud of what we’ve achieved in such a short time”, says Giles. “Our concept is to change the way people approach their local pub. So, from a hearty breakfast served from 10am, through to a home-cooked menu and Tapas served all day, we trust that our customers are fully satisﬁed.” Nina adds: “After all, what could be better than sitting in a warm friendly atmosphere beside the log burner, enjoying a Sunday roast, or when summer comes, sitting in the spacious beer garden with a refreshing pint?” The Hawkins Arms is one to keep an eye out for with many dates for the diary, including regular quiz evenings and popular music nights, holding a free acoustic night on the last Monday of every month, as well as speciality dining evenings, using the new barbeque. t’s that time of year again, when garden catalogues are dusted off, bulbs start to burst into flower and the blossom starts to appear on the trees. Discovering the winter garden

Pine Lodge Gardens in St Austell is one garden that you can enjoy all year round.

ou don’t have to wait for sunshine to enjoy beautiful landscaping and clever planting. Now is the perfect time to visit Cornwall’s Winter Garden, one of the largest in the South West, at Pine Lodge Gardens. Pine Lodge Gardens supports the NGS (National Garden Scheme) on 6th February with an open charity day celebrating the Winter Garden and the Snowdrop. Owner Chang Li explains the garden’s design influences: “We believe great design comes from the mind and the heart. We’re passionate about creating innovative and exciting designs, involving unique

characteristics of each project. Our designs aim to enhance the visitors’ experience while co-existing harmoniously with nature.” The unique gardens began to evolve back in the early 1980s, with planting carefully planned to provide four-season appeal. There are drifts of spring bulbs, beds full of herbaceous summer plants, scores of autumn-leaf colouring shrubs and, of course, the splendid Winter Garden. Pine Lodge Gardens were first opened as a fundraiser for St Austell Lions Club when amazingly over 2000 people turned up to view the gardens – and loved it. From this the idea to open the gardens to the public

regularly was born. The gardens now contain the largest collection of plants in the county, as surveyed by the Cornwall Gardens Trust. Today, filling 30 acres with a series of unique gardens, all with a different theme and where thousands of fascinating plants from home and abroad have settled comfortably together, Pine Lodge Gardens has emerged to provide a new style of Cornish garden. Throughout, there are magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons, and azaleas, all plants which are indicative of a Cornish garden. Complementing these are gardens full of rare and unusual plants, many of which originate from the Mediterranean and the Southern Hemisphere. In the Japanese Zen Garden, originally planted with seeds from the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, a mirrorlike ornamental pond creates a magical, calm and tranquil feeling. Borrowed landscape effortlessly looks towards tracts of open parkland dotted with ancient oaks, reminiscent of a ‘Capability’ Brown landscape which flows down toward the lake, hosting wildfowl such as ducks and geese. Chang Li explains: “Our design theory is similar to the creation of a painting... Are the strokes bold and sure or are they nuanced and restrained? Does the artist use many strokes of different kinds or just a few, brilliantly placed?” The Pinetum Park area, planted in the shape of an amphitheatre, is maturing magnificently, while the wonderful threeacre Winter Garden, now celebrating its 10th anniversary, is filled with scent, flowers and interesting foliage. As each themed area flows effortlessly into the

next, the winding paths lead to the elegant ‘Monet’ style Wisteria-clad bridge, with glimpses of the chocolate box thatched cottage in the cobbled courtyard. Cottage garden borders and water features characterise this area, in contrast with the wide-open spaces beyond. From the lake in the parkland to the pond in the cottage garden, water is an important and constant theme. This really is a place to both relax and reflect; allow your senses to be awakened by the fragrances, sights, sounds and tactile plants on display. Something to look forward to for 2016 is the new theme ‘The Hidden Gardeners’, as Chang Li explains: “It pays tribute to those creatures who contribute so much to the garden by way of pollinators, composters, natural pest control and who work closely with the more visible human gardeners who keep the gardens looking so good. It hopes to get younger visitors excited about nature. There are so many levels of interest in a good garden. The more you know, the more you experience, the more you can bring to your understanding of it.” This well-considered, impeccably maintained garden is brimming with interest, even in the depths of winter. There’s a reason why Pine Lodge Gardens are open all year round and that’s because there’s so much to see. So, why not visit and enjoy this garden as much as I did?

From boat to stage, Nadia Pendleton speaks to Fisherman’s Friend Jason Nicholas about potting the best catch, singing to thousands, and starting a shellfish business with friends.

nterviewing ﬁsherman Jason Nicholas on a cold, wet and windy January morning, cuppa in hand, while he was rolling on the waves on his boat Three J’s made me thankful for mobile phones. Jason wouldn’t swap places with me for anything, he explains: “Being able to go out on a daily basis, often seeing dolphins and basking sharks, whilst doing the job you love, is almost perfect. Obviously the sun doesn’t always shine and winds stay calm, but it’s still better than any job ashore!” This humble Padstow man has been ﬁshing since he was 16. It’s a labour of love, a tough business and a hard lifestyle that many young people shy away from, especially in the modern economic climate, but there is clearly something in Jason’s blood that draws him to the sea, unquestioningly.

After a long week at sea, Jason and his ﬁsherman friends would get together for a drink and a laugh. The laughs would turn to chorus as old sea shanties were sung to the sound of the accordion and drum, and so, the now famed Fisherman’s Friends were born. “On Friday nights, we’d be singing on the harbourside and collecting for a different charity weekly. Singing with your friends with not only the back drop of Port Isaac harbour but the amazing Cornish sunset is pretty stunning!” The group’s reputation for lively, often bawdy shows quickly spread, and soon they were racking up Glastonbury slots, national TV appearances and celebrity admirers. Balancing a life on the stage and on the boat might be hard for some, but Jason explains it pairs with the ﬁshing perfectly. “Most tour dates are during the winter

The Fisherman’s Friends’ latest album, Proper Job, is out now

months, generally when the weather is not too good for fishing! The best times for me are the festivals during the summer when I can go to sea all week and then sing at a festival in front of thousands of people whilst enjoying a beer or two with my mates! It’s nice to see the sun coming up in the mornings whilst at sea and then see it setting whilst singing!” The latest venture to come from a few pints with friends is the Padstow Shellfish Co. Launched last year, it sells Jas’ sustainably caught crab and lobster which is then freshly cooked, hand-picked and in the customers’ hands within hours. Jason had long lamented to his old friends Anne Vivian, Pete and Emma McLardy that he caught and landed his shellfish in Padstow, but had to travel out of town to get it picked professionally, only to bring it back to the harbour to sell it on. They knew there had to be a better way. Pete explains: “The four of us reckoned we could have a go. People were becoming far more aware of the origins of food they were eating. This was our opportunity; we knew Jason could supply the freshest crab to our own processing unit and, as we have proved, we could find a market for it.” Padstow Shellfish Co. crab and lobsters are now

highly sought after by chefs, delis and cooks from the Duchy to Dubai. Jason gets out on his boat whenever Mother Nature (and his singing schedule) allows. He uses the potting method of catching crab and lobster which is the most sustainable form of fishing; it’s small scale and selective, berried egg carrying females are returned alive and it does little or no damage to the sea bed. He is equally proud of his catch as his shows: “Our beautiful crabs and lobsters are caught off the gorgeous north Cornwall shores; they are handled with care and attention from pot to plate within 24 hours. Supermarkets shellfish could be anything up to a week out of the water. I can guarantee traceability and that’s what my customers love.” “Being a Padstow fisherman, supplying people with good quality crab and lobster and singing in the Fisherman’s Friends means a very proud Cornish boy!” It’s all in a day’s work.

nspired by our editor, Mandy, over a very good cuppa in the lovely Nauti But Ice Café in Porthleven, this month I am writing about hugs. Well it is Valentine’s Day and the month of love. So… let’s start with the power of hugs. We use hugs in our Made for Life Days when people really need a good, proper, long hug. Think about it… how do you feel after a really good hug? Here’s the science and ﬁve good reasons to hug: Hugging 1. Hugging releases oxytocin, a chemical that has been linked to happiness and social bonding. Research shows that oxytocin also promotes the feelings of trust and devotion. 2. The longer the hug the better! To fully release the oxytocin in your body and the person you are hugging, the hug needs to be at least six seconds. 20 seconds is optimum hugging time! 3. When you hug your loved ones you strengthen your bond to each other. 4. Guess what? Hugs can actually reduce your blood pressure. They activate pressure receptors in your body, sending signals to the part of your brain responsible for lowering your blood pressure. Romantic hugs keep the heart strong, literally!

Hug yourself Giving yourself a regular hug or treat is important. I had a lovely spa day at the award-winning Carbis Bay Spa recently. Bliss… just watching the sea from the hot tub was absolute heaven. There are loads of gorgeous spas in Cornwall with special winter offers… so give yourself a hug and treat yourself to a pamper. Treat at home This bath routine will soothe, nourish and detox. Put on your favourite chill-out music, light a candle, pour in your home-blended bath salts (see recipe in box) and relax… Quick tip: Make a note of the time – until you really get used to taking ‘me-time’ it’s easy to think you have been relaxing in your bath for ages – when actually, only about ten minutes have passed! Try for at least 20 minutes in your bath.

1/4 cup of Epsom salts 1/8 cup of sea salt (Cornish Seasalt or Himalayan are great) 4-5 drops of (ideally organic) essential oil – lavender, sweet orange or rose are my favourites Method

The little things If you were to move into a care home, what would be most important to you?

e know how diﬃcult thinking about care can be. There are so many options – moving into a residential or nursing home, taking on community carers, going into respite or becoming a carer yourself – and with every option often comes a personal challenge. Choosing the right care for your loved one is rarely easy. There are lots of fears around moving into a care home but one of the deepest anxieties is around the fear of losing one’s identity. A person’s identity is made up of thousands of little moments, relationships and preferences. The clothes we wear, the strange habits and pleasures we have, our favourite music or literature, the way we eat and sleep, how we make our tea or coffee, how we wash ourselves and clean our teeth, our ‘ways’ – it is all these little choices that make us who we are. It is our choices that make us unique. When someone loses the capacity to make their own choices or is unable to physically care for themselves, their individuality falls into the hands of their carer. Now, while the national minimum standards do set out the importance for all carers to treat people as individuals, there can sometimes be a lack of understanding of what this means and how it can be translated into a care package that meets the individual’s needs. At Cornwall Care, each home resident and client in the community has a bespoke care package that is not only tailored to their individual care needs but is also focussed on their personal preferences. Each person is provided a book that includes

everything the individual and family feel is relevant to their experience; things like food preferences, interests, hobbies and favourite activities. When you move into a care home, your belongings become your connection with yourself and your past. Your possessions become so much more than just ‘stuff’. So when you think about care for your loved one, remember to ask yourself – if I were going into a care home, what would be important to me? You may find it’s something smaller than you think, like that first cup of tea in the morning.

Up and running Knee replacement at Duchy Hospital will soon have you back to your old self again.

ften as we get older, many of us might need knee replacement surgery to quell severe knee pain caused by arthritis, when other treatments such as painkillers, weight loss, and physiotherapy have failed. Generally patients are over 60, but some might need it much earlier because of trauma or other forms of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis. Thankfully, knee replacement is now a routine and extremely successful procedure. Incredibly, 521 replacements were performed at Duchy Hospital in 2015, supported by the experienced team of theatre staff, nurses and physiotherapists. According to the data available, Duchy Hospital had the 4th best health gain results following knee replacement in the country (Health and Social Care Information Centre). Knee replacements typically last ten to 15 years, but many will last longer. If it does wear out, it’s usually possible to do a revision procedure, although while results are good, they may not match those of the primary procedure. The aim of the operation is to get patients out of pain in daily activities, but it can also restore excellent function, enabling some to return to sport such as golf and tennis. “I have even had patients who have returned to running mountain marathons and ‘off piste’ skiing after a knee replacement”, explains Consultant Surgeon Andrew Lee, “but I don’t generally recommend such impact sports as it may affect the longevity of the replacement.” There are different forms, with partial knee replacements being possible if only part of the joint is affected, or total knee replacements if someone has more extensive deterioration. The advantage of a partial knee replacement is that it’s a smaller operation, has a lower rate of complications such as infection, people get over it more quickly, generally get a better range of movement and have a more normal feeling knee at the end of it. A hospital stay is normally around three to four days, when patients have lots of physiotherapy to get the knee bending and get walking again. On average, it

takes about six weeks to get over a partial replacement and about three months for a full knee replacement. It’s a painful procedure, taking a lot of hard work on the part of the patient to get their knee moving again, but the hard work is worth it to achieve better results. Patients go home on crutches for a few weeks, once conﬁdent about managing at home. Obviously there are risks to such a larger operation, such as infection, clots in the veins, risks of the anaesthetic, stiffness and revision procedures. Fortunately these complications are rare and most patients are more than pleased with the outcome.

hether it’s fantastic design ideas and build to redesign your garden, landscape design for commercial use, maintenance or a fabulous natural swimming pool, we have always loved MidCornwall Landscaping. So it seemed only right, at the start of their 30th year, to chat to owner Jacques Egbers about their story… and, it turns out that it could have all been so very different as he and his young family ended up in Cornwall by mistake! Jacques was born and educated in Holland; he has a degree in Organic Horticulture. Then deciding on a new life in Europe with his young wife and two very

young children, they opted for the South of France. So they set off with all their belongings and no real idea of what awaited them at the other end. “It was a complete mistake. What really happened is lost in time and family legend.” Jacques tells me with a smile. “But we got our directions a bit wrong and ended up by sheer chance and a lot of luck in Cornwall! I found work on an Organic Farm in St Mawes where we were welcomed as immigrants with open arms, and our love for Cornwall and its fantastic landscape really began. We have never looked back or had any regrets that we didn’t end up in France!” Over the next six years Jacques started to

use his degree and training, slowly drifting into landscaping in and around St Mawes. “Then in 1986 I decided to take a leap of faith and leave the farm and its tied cottage to start Mid Cornwall Landscaping. The motorbike with chainsaw strapped onto the back was my only mode of transport in the early days, and just a bit hairy on the narrow lanes!” Jacques adds: “So we moved to a cottage in Tregony and I worked for the first three years on the Roseland, designing and building landscape projects mainly for private homes. The business grew by word of mouth and I was soon employing two other landscapers.” Their reputation grew; Jacques explains that the company expanded by establishing relationships throughout Cornwall, and building trust with local and national companies as well as in the domestic market. “We slowly expanded year on year, growing organically; starting by working over the whole of Cornwall, and expanding into commercial contracts with Local Authorities and the construction industry in all aspects of garden design, landscaping and maintenance. More recently we have branched out further and been involved in the design and construction of many natural swimming ponds and pools, which fits well with the ethos of the business.” Then Jacques adds with a smile. “But, of course, our success is mainly due to our wonderful, reliable, extremely skilled staff, many of whom have been with MCL for over 20 years. We offer ongoing training, which keeps the staff interested in their

job whilst improving their skill sets. We are proud to be members of highly regarded landscape Association BALI. And the health and safety of our employees is very important to us, so we are fully accredited members of CHAS and Construction line.” The whole team are involved in the 30th anniversary celebrations and looking forward to the future. Jacques continues: “We thought it would be a great idea to give back to Cornwall and some of the companies and people we have worked with. So we decided on 30 trees; one for each of our 30 years in business, and we want to link the symbolic process of planting these trees to promoting sustainability. We are planting old Cornish varieties (for example Cornish Aromatic and Cornish Gilliflower) that are sadly dying out due to the influx of more well-known varieties.” Mid Cornwall Landscaping will be donating the trees to schools, carehomes and community-based projects. Artist Caroline Cleave discusses her life’s passions, discovering she had cancer and running a workshop for Made For Life Foundation.

here I create, there I am true – that’s the quote pinned to my studio wall. Rarely found without a pencil in my hand, with an insatiable appetite for art and design, it is an affirmation that I couldn’t wish to be in a more honest and happy place. As a child, my father had incredible talent and could sculpt, paint and draw. I have memories of him creating stunning hats for me out of very simple materials for the annual school hat parade. As an art teacher, I taught in an inner city Bristol school until I returned to Cornwall with my husband Jon, a proper Cornishman with true Cornish roots in his beloved county. I was quickly drawn to the rich cultural arts events and earned my spurs getting involved heavily within the scene. I also discovered gig rowing, a fantastic and thrilling sport. I’ve always loved the sea so I felt right at home. Fit and happy, all seemed good. But after a routine examination I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was devastated… especially as there was no history of it in my family. I’m a positive person and the doctors and nurses were wonderful, but I still found myself ill prepared for the journey that lay ahead. Someone said it’s like being behind a glass wall and, although all your friends and family are with you, they are on one side and you are on the other. Like many people having chemotherapy, I didn’t want to lose my hair. With a wig being out of the question, I remembered the hats of my childhood. Crafting these beautiful hats and head wraps made me feel good again and gave me back the confidence I had lost. Through my experiences I had learned what was important to me in life, and through that grew some of the central themes of my art: time and place. Recently discovered by Emma Ball Ltd, my designs are now distributed across the UK. I’m also regularly commissioned to illustrate for companies and charities that align with my own beliefs. Having met Juliette Hathway and the team at Made For Life Foundation, witnessing all the wonderful work that they are doing firsthand, I was inspired to get involved myself with a workshop.
