If you are planning on buying your own home in the Duchy, then take a look at our cover feature on page 10, all about breathing life back into some rather unusual buildings with beautiful results. It’s partly the iconic buildings but mainly the stunning scenery and coastline that keeps bringing film crews back to Cornwall, we take a look at some of the many successful programmes that are filmed here, including of course Poldark and Doc Martin on page 42. Then there’s the wonderful people who live in Cornwall: I get to talk to Tom Kay the charismatic founder of global brand, Finisterre on page 40; Mark Sullivan, the man who is taking some iconic Cornish food brands out to the world on page 66. I am lucky enough to meet a personal hero: renowned sailor and adventurer Pete Goss see page 72. And… I catch up with award winning garden designer, Jo Midwinter, who proves that, with a bit of luck and lots of determination, you can change your life and live the dream on page 60.

Kneehigh’s Asylum returns to Heligan Summer’s coming and it is time to pick up the guy ropes and pitch the tent for the return of Kneehigh’s incredibly popular Asylum, set in the magnificent surroundings of the historic Lost Gardens of Heligan.
From gallery to your wall in a mouse click With its unspoiled harbour, iconic buildings and ever-changing seascape, Porthleven is quite the hub for artistic creativity – reflected, of course, in the galleries and studios. Excitingly, one such place has just brought local paintings, ceramics, jewellery and much more online; all the works in The Customs House Gallery, based on the harbourside, are now available to purchase through their website. “Our website has been set up for some time now but the e-commerce is a new element. Lots of our customers keep track of our artists’ work and now they can buy it more easily too,” says Louise. What’s more, The Customs House Gallery is signed up to Own Art, an initiative that allows you to
spread the cost of eligible artworks over ten months with an interest-free loan. The scheme brings art to everyone and helps artists to reach a greater audience too. So, with this in mind, why not visit The Customs House Gallery online and the painting or sculpture that catches your eye may be more affordable than you previously thought… and now you have the luxury of browsing and buying at the click of a mouse button. Louise and the team will carefully package your purchase and post it to you via courier service. The only thing you need to worry about is: where to hang or place it? www.cornwall-art.co.uk 01326 569365
A time of tranquil refreshment in our busy lives… With Cornwall’s unique ‘Roaming Eco Spa’ going from strength to strength, Company Director Martin reflects on why the Kernow Springs project has proven so popular. “It seems many share our ethos that real comfort and true satisfaction really can be found in the simplest of forms. We all crave a little respite away from the demands of the modern word. Our eco hot tubs and sauna yurts are heated by burning wood. Together with hot and cold showers, private changing yurts, and Bedouin chill-out lounge, enjoy a truly beautiful, sustainable, cleansing spa experience for any event.” Whilst holidaying in Polzeath, the spa caught the eye of popular TV and radio personality Jo Whiley, who booked the whole family in for an exclusive two-hour ‘star gazer session’. They enjoyed the
experience so much that she later tweeted: “Kernow Springs.... what a wonderful thing to do!”
Now in its sixth year, The Asylum has firmly established itself as a must-go event on the summer calendar. The award-winning purpose-built tent is a unique space full of playful surprises and irreverent fun and this year’s season, running from Thursday 14th July to Sunday 28th August, is even bigger with three new productions. The season includes Daniel Jamieson’s The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk directed by Emma Rice, a dazzling and evocative play drawn from the life of artist Marc Chagall and his wife Bella; Simon Harvey directs FUP, his adaptation of US novelist Jim Dodge’s best-selling modern fable about a strange family and their whisky-swilling duck, plus a visit from Shakespeare’s Globe and Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, with Nick Bagnall’s touring production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Mike Shepherd, Artistic Director of Kneehigh, says: “It is great to be back with the Asylum for another year and with a fantastic season of work. In keeping with the spirit of the Asylum, we are embracing the old and the new, the mischievous and the subversive in what promises to be another wonderful adventure.” www.kneehigh.co.uk 01872 267910
The eco spa is back on the road this summer. Look out at The Masked Ball, Tunes In The Dunes, Wychwood Festival, The Wonder Fields, Rock Oyster Festival, Port Eliot Festival, Boardmasters and Healy Cider Festival. To entertain your guests with added wow factor at your party, wedding or corporate event, get in touch with Martin and the team now. Even better, Kernow Springs’ beautiful handcrafted eco tubs are available to buy, with prices start from £2,236 including delivery and installation. www.kernowsprings.co.uk info@kernowsprings.co.uk 07779 374017

In our quest to find the most unusual property conversions, we’ve searched far and wide for iconic Cornish buildings, large and small, which have been lovingly brought back to life.
ornwall’s unique charm owes a lot to its beautiful vernacular architecture – engine houses, stone cottages, agricultural buildings, Methodist chapels. Sadly many have since fallen into disrepair, but many are being injected with new life. As Matthew Rowe, of Savills Cornwall, notes: “Inland there are so many hidden gems to discover with fascinating histories.” Lucy, from Boutique Retreats, adds: “A converted property – whether it’s a seventeenth-century barn, a tiny fisherman’s cottage or a lovely old chapel – offers something truly unique. Cornwall has these in spades.” Of course, some rightly question whether iconic historic buildings, held dear to the public, should be converted. But surely it’s a fitting tribute allowing them to stand tall for another 100 years, rather than letting them crumble and be lost forever? And one thing that’s certain is that the new caretakers care passionately about these buildings and their heritage too. Lucy continues: “People tend to take on these kind of properties on a very personal level – they are always a labour of love.” So in this issue, we celebrate the rebirth of some of these fallen giants. And what’s even better, we’ve included some that are currently available as holiday lets too. So why not take the opportunity to experience the magic for yourselves?

The Old Fish Cellar
Landmarks really don’t get much more iconic (or Cornish) than the engine house. These mighty structures were built to pump water out of the mines, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But when the industry ground to a halt, the engines were mercilessly ripped out for scrap, leaving the roofless shells to the elements. Thankfully, it was a happy ending for Wheal Rose, on the outskirts of Redruth, lovingly brought back to life by current owner, Steve Eagle. “The Engine House was built around the 1850s but apparently never used”, explains Steve. “It was an empty shell”, he says, “but as the granite walls were sound, it made it a question of filling in the holes.” But it wasn’t all that simple – being a heritage site, even colour palettes were carefully scrutinised for authenticity! “Work with the Conservation Officer throughout the project”, says Steve, “and glean as much information from people involved with industrial archaeology.” Steve continues: “We have had a great deal of pleasure from the engine house, our home from home for almost 20 years.” This unique building has recently been listed for sale, through Humberts (www.humberts. com), a bittersweet moment for Steve, as he explains. “We want to spend our free time with our grandchildren, but we’ll still come to Cornwall and when we do, we’ll look at the old mine and think: we built that.”
This building in Mousehole may not have had quite so lofty beginnings – starting life as an unassuming fish cellar – but what it lacks in stature, it certainly makes up for in style. The Old Fish Cellar, the work of interior designer Camilla Banks (www. camillabanksinteriordesign.co.uk) and her cinematographer husband, Chris Yacoubian, is a masterclass in design, utilising a monochrome colour palette, beaten copper sinks, reclaimed materials and bold utilitarian lighting to great effect. “We love a challenge and The Old Fish Cellar certainly was that”, says Camilla, “Disused and unoccupied for 40 years, it was a dark and damp cellar when we bought it, used by fishermen to store their nets. But this is exactly what attracted us to it – it had character! Compact in size, we embraced the New York loft style living, creating an open-plan studio space, just enough for a couple’s retreat. We wanted it to be functional as well as stylish, and its raw industrial style with a nod to the nautical was inspired by the space and its surroundings.” Camilla continues: “I remember holidays as a kid, when we’d rock up at a cottage and the first thing mum would do is clean everything. Gone are those days and our motto is ‘holidays should be nicer than home’!” If you’d like to pay a visit, contact Boutique Retreats (www.boutique-retreats.co.uk).

The Chapel A few miles down from Port Isaac on the north coast is a beautifully renovated Methodist chapel, a building as breathtaking as its location. Built around 1850, the chapel was later converted to a glass store, and then a dwelling, in 1990, before being wonderfully restored by Jeremy Goring. The original conversion was done fairly economically and unsympathetically, so it was largely a case of starting again: stripping it back, opening up the ceiling, exposing the original beams and removing all the fake windows and cladding. “It had almost no light”, explains Jeremy “and a very low, dark wooden ceiling.” The roof was completely removed, rebuilt, then put back using all the original beams and original Delabole slates. “The guys who did the 1990 conversion got one thing right – putting the living space upstairs to maximise on the incredible views – who needs a view while asleep?” And the views really are sensational – lush greenery with the shimmering blue sea beckoning behind, framed by the huge arched windows; the interiors furnished in a cool, understated and contemporary style. The whole place exudes luxury and fine craftsmanship. “We were very lucky to work with a really good architect, James Morford, and extremely good, reliable builders, Barry and Adam Purchase. Each time a difficult challenge presented itself, they came up with a clever solution. Barry copied a missing beam and perfectly matched it to the original 150-year-old ones.” So, what tips does Jeremy offer to anyone embarking on a major renovation project? “Don't do it!” he laughs. “But if you must, make sure you work with someone you trust.” You also have to be realistic about the costs involved. “Think of a budget then triple it. Try
your very best not to cut corners or make false economies. Easier said than done!” Of course, respecting a building’s history is fundamental. “The Chapel is in National Trust land”, explains Jeremy, “we worked closely with them to make sure the new elements were more respectful of the heritage.” Lucy, from Boutique Retreats, adds: “The aim is to celebrate the building’s history and make its soul shine, not erase it – and in our experience our guests are always drawn to places which have character and are a bit unusual.” If you fancy a stay at this little slice of paradise, contact Boutique Retreats (www.boutique-retreats.co.uk).

Fort Picklecombe As Chrissy Phillips of Helpful Holidays explains, “The history of Fort Picklecombe is as curious as its name. Converted into 103 apartments in the 1970s, the fabulous uninterrupted views across Plymouth Sound from this striking building perched on a promontory are a clue to its former life.” “Commissioned in the mid 19th century, Fort Picklecombe was one of ‘Palmerston’s Follies’, a chain of coastal forts to protect Devonport Naval Base from the frightening French.” However, due to international power shifts the French never actually arrived, and the threat that first prompted the building of these wonderful, imposing structures was nullified before many were completed – a costly and embarrassing episode. There was, however, a happy ending for Fort Picklecombe. “Its 40 guns were never fired”, continues Chrissy, “and after falling derelict following World War II, it has now found the perfect, more peaceful role as waterside accommodation for guests and residents.” Helpful Holidays now let five of the apartments at Fort Picklecombe, on the n Fort Picklecombe near Torpoint

c i l l y d i e Th Isles of Scilly
Feel your mind, body and soul relax as you begin strolling to the slow, steady beat of island life.
A
trip to the Isles of Scilly is hard to forget. When considered, it’s no wonder people return year after year as there are so many things that make the Isles of Scilly an incredibly rich holiday experience. Perhaps the biggest reason for so many return visits is its authenticity. Simply put, island living is all about making the most of the great outdoors. Whether it’s soaking up the subtropical-sun, barbequing on the beach, getting out on the turquoise seas or fishing for your own mackerel, a stay on these iconic islands might just have you hooked. After a warm welcome, visitors are made honorary islanders for the duration of their stay and are immediately immersed into the style of life unique to the Isles. Holidays are all about creating memories to take home with you. Being a home to stunning, natural beauty, simply lacing up your boots and heading out on the spectacular coast-paths will vividly imprint the breathtaking coastline on your memory for a lifetime. And if the alluring, opalescent waters prove too enticing, visiting uninhabited islands and swimming with grey seals are
more experiences you’re unlikely to ever forget. The best thing about all this is that, rather than flying long haul and losing the first days of your half-way-around-the-world trip to jetlag, you can jump on a flight and be there in quick time. And what a thrilling flight! You and the kids can watch the pilot in action via the open cockpit – a rare treat – in between gazing out of the window as the miles of pristine coastline roll by beneath you. Flying times are only 15 minutes from Land's End, 30 minutes from Newquay and 60 minutes from Exeter Airports. If flying isn’t your thing you can soak up St Michael’s Mount, the Minack Theatre and Wolf Rock Light house as you kick back on deck aboard the ferry from Penzance, and watch out for a show of dolphins. So if you’re no fool for long haul, yet you want the sea, sun and balmy evenings of a subtropical summer holiday, head to the Isles of Scilly and relax, the island way.
"Head to the Isles of Scilly and relax, the island way”.

Relax and rejuvenate Rediscover Cornwall this summer with a staycation
I
n recent years, we’ve been reminded once again of the superb resorts that line our shores. Families and couples alike are constantly rediscovering the delights of fresh, sea air combined with the home comforts of… well… home. We have, however, also grown accustomed to indulgent spas, destination dining and first class service and now, we want to have it all! Fortunately, hotels such as The Cornwall, situated in the St Austell Bay area, demonstrate that we can; offering quality accommodation and food, the team have placed themselves firmly at the top of the list when it comes to satisfying those of us seeking the most out of our ‘staycation’. Set in 43 acres of woodland, The Cornwall has built a reputation as a destination dining hotspot, placing a strong emphasis on using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients. As part of a brasserie-style dining experience, you can expect regional dishes such as Fowey mussels, crab, steaks and Cornish sea-bass, and that’s not all… The ambience here is relaxed, with a true family focus so, instead of cooking, parents can simply kick back on the terrace with a glass of something chilled, while the children entertain themselves playing croquet or petanque. Take a day off and head to The Clearing Spa and refresh your senses in the infinity pool; reap the benefits of aromatherapy and embrace the power of botanicals as the team ensure your Spa day soothes and stimulates your mind, body and soul. With temperatures rising and spring quickly turning to summer, you’ll be tempted to take afternoon tea or enjoy the increasingly balmy evenings, with predinner drinks, on the Parkland Terrace, where you can drink in the sweeping view over gardens and woodland. So, if abroad is out of the question, yet you want a holiday where you can have it all, book yourself into The Cornwall and make the most of all it has to offer.

T
he idea of actually owning a caravan by the sea is quite a strange concept to a lot of people, the assumption being that you either buy a second home by the sea, or simply go on holiday for a week or a fortnight. But holiday home ownership at Perran Sands is the perfect way for you and your family to enjoy a seaside escape whenever you want – even your dog can come too! Chase away the stress, where the pace is relaxed and kids can be kids in a completely safe haven. With all your home comforts around you, and very few of the responsibilities, you can sit back and soak up the laid back atmosphere. Whilst Perran Sands boasts all the high-end facilities you would expect from a top park – indoor and outdoor pool, amazing eateries, on-site activities and more, what really sets it apart is the nature: the space, the acres of Sites of Special Scientific Interest land, the miles of golden beach and the pumping waves on your doorstep! Another wonderful touch is the strong community feel amongst the owners, with owners’ events and parties including wine clubs and a summer ball. Every month Perran Sands organise a free activity for owners at the weekend, often outdoors, from abseiling at Lusty Glaze cove in Newquay and canoeing at Golant near Fowey, to horseriding on the beach and bushcraft for the young ones. There are also leisure activities on site, including target shooting, archery, aqua jets, aqua gliders, a roller disco rink and a gym, as well as paddle boarding and a surf school for lessons or hire. Owner of five years, Richard Rabin, says: “To me the best thing about owning my caravan at Perran Sands is getting to the beach first thing in the morning as the sun is coming up and having the best waves to yourself.” What’s more, Perran Sands can sublet your holiday home when you’re not there, generating an income to offset the costs, making holiday home ownership more affordable. So what are you waiting for? Be the first to leave footprints in the sand!

The Bristol and Bath n connectio Steve Slimm’s inspired art has found a second home in the Bath and Bristol area
A
“I'm very grateful to have a location outside of my regular Cornish gallery connections, where my work has become really appreciated.”
words by:
Dan Warden
rtist Steve Slimm has lived in Cornwall for his entire adult life. Seven years on from his move to the county, his mind was firmly made up to embark upon his chosen career as a painter. By twenty-seven, he was making the beginnings of a living in local Cornish galleries. His earliest recollection of the Bath area and his involvement in it’s vibrant art scene was a trip during the 80’s where, in his beatup old Cortina, he took small paintings to show galleries and slept in a layby! A year into the millenium, Steve found himself exhibiting regularly in Innocent Fine Art Gallery in Clifton, after an introduction courtesy of a Penzance based artist, Mary Stork. Mary kindly introduced him to a more serious art market allowing him to develop his unique style as a Cornish contemporary painter. Eventually the gallery closed its doors and thus ended a very progressive chapter for Steve. Steve’s ongoing connection with the Bath and Bristol area is through the Bristol streetscene painter and gallerist, Tom White. Having been an avid collector of Cornish art for most of his life, Tom first saw Steve’s
work on surfing holidays to Cornwall. Years later, when Tom realised that Cornish painter, Essex Tyler, was exhibiting Steve’s work near Penzance, Tom immediately got in touch, wanting to showcase Steve’s work at affordable art fairs all across the UK. Tom now has a permanent gallery, the Clifton Fine Art Gallery, with stocks of Steve’s work, including coastal Cornwall-inspired pieces, work done around the Clifton Gorge and suspension bridge, as well as abstract pieces. The gallery also arranges specific shows which showcase Steve’s new work. Steve said, “We’re planning a special show of abstract work in September this year, for which I’m also releasing an album of improvisational music to accompany the work. Should be fun - even if nothing else happens. So, thank you Bath and Bristol for your enthusiastic engagement - I could not do without the support of my fans!”

From 26th March to 11th June, the new exhibition, ‘Fred Hall: From Newlyn School to Caricature’, brings together a range of work from this versatile artist (18601948) who painted not only in Newlyn, but also the landscapes around Porlock and Newbury, and was a keen advocate of the new ‘square brush’ technique.
Vertigo Sea is a three-screen, 48-min film on humankind’s relationship with the sea; an exploration of its role in slavery, migration and whaling. Fusing dramatic footage from the BBC, archival material from BFI and newly shot scenes, the immersive installation delivers a potent reminder of current issues. (30th April to 25th June).
The gallery’s light and airy space on Porthleven’s harbour side exhibits original work by some of Cornwall’s finest artists in a range of mediums. A bespoke framing service is available here as well as the Own Art scheme. The gallery is open daily 10.30-5pm and you can view the work available on the regularly updated website.

om greets me at the workshop and shop just outside St Agnes. It’s no surprise that it is a bit out in the wilds, with views out over the sea, for the Finisterre brand and indeed, Tom himself, are all about the environment and getting out whatever the weather. The place is quietly bustling; with surfboards against the walls, and pictures and design boards; with several dogs curled up under the desks. The whole place has a warm and collaborative feel; it’s just how a creative workshop should be. Tom has spent much of his life near the sea, in the marshy wilds of north Norfolk: “The sea’s always been part of my life; it’s very much in me and in my blood.” Tom explains with a grin. “I read Biology (Marine focus) at the University of Bristol and then trained as a chartered surveyor in London. But I wanted to return to the sea and Cornwall. We’d always come here for
family holidays and when I was in Bristol I would come down to Cornwall surfing whenever I could. Then thirteen years ago I finally moved to St Agnes and started Finisterre.” The Finisterre brand has grown a huge reputation for the quality and style of its product as well being an ethical and sustainable brand that researches its fabrics and supply chains, only working with suppliers who share the same beliefs. Tom mentions ‘the brand’ a lot; he is evidently passionate about the beliefs that make the Finisterre brand so special. “It would be hard not to be a belief based company living and working in Cornwall. Don’t get me wrong, we are a business with mouths to feed, but strong belief based businesses do stand the test of time as there is purpose to your existence.” It all started in his bedroom in St Agnes developing product that suited the reality

“It would be hard not to be a belief based company living and working in Cornwall" of cold-water surfing. “Traditionally surfing was always bikinis and board shorts, which are fine for a couple of weeks of the year. We came from an understanding of the weather and the commitment needed surfing over here: windy, wet clifftops, waiting for the conditions to change. Building product to suit these conditions - wind and waterproof jackets, insulation layers, Merino base layers and chunky knits; making the product in the right places from the right fabrics. I still see our early product around now. We use recycled materials and a lot of Merino wool. One of our bestselling products is our Merino boxer shorts, once tried you just come back for more, it’s an unbelievable product.” Over the years they have built a loyal following of customers who understand the products and understand the brand they are buying into. Finisterre clothes are built
to last and if they get torn or damaged they offer a full repair service from the workshop in St Agnes. Tom continues, “We’re at the forefront of great adventure clothing and do like to push the boundaries. Really well designed products that become classics is what we’re after – clothes that are loved and worn for years.” They have recently launched their first wetsuit – again Tom wanted to get it right – so they worked with 300 surfers, as testers, who used the wetsuit and gave feedback; Finisterre incorporated these changes into the end product and as Tom tells me “Ultimately these surfers have helped us design a better product.” Tom loves the life that Cornwall offers, he and the team go down to the beach for a surf or swim; they have team days out and can often be found in the stores (London, Falmouth and St Agnes). Of his role in the company Tom says: “I do a bit of everything, from working on new designs, talking to ambassadors, cashflows, and even strimming out the back! Keeping the culture a good mix of passion and drive is crucial.” In his spare time Tom is a helm on the St Agnes lifeboat, loves Chapel Porth for a surf and “going down to West Penwith because it still feels like you’re getting into the wilds of Cornwall.” He is as passionate about the environment as ever and his enthusiasm is contagious. Tom says, “It’s all about the journey, sticking to your beliefs, and you just have to keep going. I have a talented team to work with and an equally fabulous place to live… I consider myself lucky!”

CAUGHT ON CAMERA A breathtaking rugged coastline, sheltered coves, the isolation of the moors, beautiful houses and quaint villages… the perfect location!

ardly a month goes by when someone isn’t filming something in Cornwall. With its stunning coastline, from the rugged north coast beloved by Poldark, with dashing young men on galloping horses and gorgeous windswept heroines, to the sheltered calm of quiet coves and estuaries fit for Daphne Du Maurier and Rosamunde Pilcher. Cornwall just about has it all, including the weather – we have calm hot sunny days with clear blue skies and storm lashed landscapes with huge waves and threatening, dark brooding clouds, and just about everything in between… and all in the same week! Whatever the weather or location; Cornwall looks good on screen and is a much loved location for TV series, documentaries and blockbuster movies. Film crews of all shapes and sizes are made welcome in the Duchy and agencies like Visit Cornwall and
Cornwall Council are happy to lend a hand by suggesting the perfect film location or helping to arrange filming permission. And why? Because the film business brings lots of money into Cornwall, from the filming itself to the tourists who come to follow in the footsteps of a much loved character or author. From the Doc Martin effect in Port Isaac (aka Portwenn in the popular series), to the much-lauded new Poldark series: from zombies in Falmouth with Brad Pitt, to Maggie Smith and Dame Judi Dench filming Ladies in Lavender in Cadgwith, or Wycliffe filming the thought-provoking detective series down on the Lizard; Cornwall makes a stunning backdrop and there is a real value to the local economy. For instance, Germans are our biggest groups of foreign tourists by far: because they love Rosamunde Pilcher! The author’s a household name there. Over the past

twenty years German company, ZDF films have made over 100 films of her books with more in the pipeline, and they are watched by around six million viewers each time. Many of whom then visit Cornwall to see their favourite locations. The stunning Elizabethan manor, Prideaux Place, on the beautiful North Cornish coast, has been the location for fourteen of her stories and is now a mecca for visitors from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Owner Peter Prideaux-Brune always likes to take a cameo role in the films shot at his home – his credits so far include a chauffeur, a gin taster and a coroner. Peter’s wife Elizabeth tells me: “Peter and I love having films here and Peter likes to take a cameo role, a la Hitchcock, in the Pilcher films! Apart from meeting well known actors we find the crews fun and considerate to work with, once you get used to the endless cables and people in every

corner of the house. We feel a great sense of pride seeing the house and garden on screen as we have worked so hard to restore them. The extra publicity also helps greatly with our visitor numbers!" Bonython Manor and its gardens on the Lizard is another popular location for Rosamunde Pilcher films. Other Cornish Estates, little villages and isolated coves feature in many films and TV programmes. Director Tim Burton seems to like filming in Cornwall he used Antony House in East Cornwall to film part of his recent film, Alice in Wonderland, and has now come back to the Roseland to the tiny hamlet of Portholland to film Miss
Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children with Samuel L. Jackson and Chris O’Dowd. And let’s not forget the ongoing Poldark series, where the Cornish scenery was more than a match for a shirtless Aidan Turner. St Agnes Head, where iconic engine houses perch on the cliff-tops offering a silent reminder of Cornwall’s mining heyday, were a natural location choice for the filming of Poldark. The area doubles as Nampara Valley in the show. Some of the cliff scenes where filmed near Padstow and feature stunning views out over the Camel estuary. Aidan Turner and a hoard of other cast members descended on Church Cove to film nighttime ship wreck scenes. Porthgwarra cove sits at the heart of the St Aubyn Estates and was used to film some swimming scenes and landings; the filming took place over a week including one all night filming session. The rich mining heritage of the west Cornwall coast linking Botallack and Levan was used. Cameras rolled with Levant Mine playing the role of fictional Tressiders Rolling Mill while Owlas and Crowns near Botallack starred as Wheal Leisure. An absolute mecca for Poldark fans, of which there must be millions!

Then there is the sea itself from the beautiful BBC Coast series, to short wildlife films about basking sharks, dolphins, seals or the fabulous birdlife. And, of course, old sailing ships create a magical feeling on film; we were lucky enough to catch up with Shane McCarthy owner of Atlantic Productions and more recently Square Sail Ventures, which owns and runs Charlestown harbour, also featured in Poldark, and the gorgeous ‘Phoenix’ a 112 foot, 2 masted brig; she was built in Denmark in 1929 and converted to an eighteenth century brig in 1996. Shane, who started in the entertainment industry in 1983 working with such iconic acts as U2, the Rolling Stones and Madonna tells me “Coming from West Cork in Ireland, it was a natural fit, the communities and beautiful coastline are very similar. I have always been involved in all things maritime: I love fishing and sailing. My family is moving to
Cornwall from Cork and the whole business will be based here. It’s not just about using Cornwall as a location there is a wealth of talent here, set construction, rigs, staging all anyone could need for a production we can provide in Cornwall – they really don’t need to bring film crew with them!” Shane has already introduced ‘green screen’ to Charlestown, a huge outdoor space for filming anything and putting the backdrop in later. He and his team sailed Phoenix up to London this winter for the premier of “In the Heart of the Sea”, Phoenix plays the whale ship Essex on which Moby Dick was based. Shane adds “Luckily we got back just before the storms hit! But it was fantastic; one of the most fabulous things I’ve done; sailing up the Thames at night; they even opened Tower Bridge for us! I really do believe that Cornwall has a great future in filming – it could be equally good for everyone.”

Rated as one of the best surfing breaks in Europe, Fistral is Newquay’s iconic beach and is perfect for surfers and families alike. Boasting nearly half a mile of golden sand the beach is backed by a row of boutiques, restaurants and cafes. So, when you’ve worked up an appetite in the waves or need a cool drink after relaxing in the sunshine, you need only venture a few steps to the back of the beach to enjoy all that Fistral has to offer. The beach is also a great destination when the sun starts to sink low on the horizon – where better to watch a Cornish sunset, to a soundtrack of cool vibes, than overlooking the water at one of Fistral’s fine eateries.

aking the most of the lighter evenings, my partner, M, and I took the opportunity to enjoy our first proper road trip of the year to the north coast. With its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife, Newquay beckoned us and, as well as the waves, we wanted to try out an exciting new restaurant too. So, we hopped in the trusty camper and pootled up to Hendra Holiday Park. With all the facilities close to the van, and being under a mile’s taxi ride to the restaurant (so we could have a tipple or two), it proved the perfect place to stay for the night. Having heard good things about the reopening of Kahuna Restaurant, run by a husband and wife team Ryan and Kelly Mather, we decided to check it out. Their pan Asian style stems from many years of travelling. Being a big fan of Asian food, and having travelled a little myself, Kahuna seemed an obvious choice. As soon as we stepped inside, we were greeted by the attentive staff and shown to our cosy table. The restaurant interior feels warm and tranquil, with retro green-leef wallpaper adding to the relaxing vibe – a contrast to the hustle and bustle of the

Newquay. My eyes were instantly drawn to the clean lines and lighting, big wooden spheres above tables and strings of golden bulbs hanging like bunting from the ceiling. Somehow it seemed slightly spa-like. We ordered a couple of Cornish lagers, taking our time to peruse the tantalising menu... if only I could sample everything! To kick things off we shared a taster plate, brimming with tempura prawns with chilli mayonnaise, duck spring rolls with sticky Thai plum sauce and Thai chicken satay skewers with peanut sauce. The tempura batter was beautifully crunchy, while the prawns were cooked to perfection. The spring rolls were packed full of fragrant spices and crunchy veg. And the chicken satay sauce melted on my tongue! These were served with a refreshing, crunchy, aromatic, salad. It was the perfect amount to share for a starter. I could go on eating this starter all evening if I could! For mains M ordered the double Indonesian Mie Goreng, a large bowl of stir-fried yellow noodles, with a generous amount of belly pork, prawns, spicy vegetables and an egg on top. Judging from the empty plate it was a wise move, with M praising the delicious flavours. I chose the Thai green curry with belly
pork and jasmine rice – just the right amount of spice for me. I can honestly say I’ve not had a better Thai curry outside of Thailand; it packed a punch without compromising on flavour. Ryan and Kelly must really know their stuff! When it came to desert it had to be the salted caramel chocolate pot with cashew crumble for me, while M had the banana fritters with toasted sesame seeds and caramel sauce. Both were a rare treat and a perfect end to a very impressive meal. After a few drinks in the town, it was back to the camper before hitting the surf the following day. Still reminiscing over the fine food, not even getting stuck in the mud could dampen our spirits (thanks to the Hendra team for pulling us out!). Apparently Kahuna does takeaway too, and with another great restaurant to add to our list, bring on the next road trip!
Every issue, we dine undercover at a different restaurant, tasting the menu and putting the team through their paces in search of the finest eateries, freshest produce and best service. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it! Look out for our ‘Tried & Tasted’ seal of approval.

or the ageing rockers amongst us, ‘Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad’ but to hit the jackpot and bag all three, you know that you’ve happened upon something really quite special. With a history to be proud of, walking into Fowey Hall is like stepping through the front door of your rich uncle’s house. Commissioned by Charles Augustin Hanson in 1889, this stunning mansion has a unique character. Now a listed building, it combines the laid back atmosphere of a country house with the elegance of a Victorian manor, remaining in the Hanson
family until it was sold in the late 1950s. Current owners, Luxury Family Hotels, spent almost the entire first year of ownership restoring Fowey Hall to its former glory, retaining and preserving its unique heritage. Such is its charm that Elton John almost bought it as a private dwelling – thankfully he didn’t, as his loss was our gain. Fowey Hall boasts ‘contemporary, childfriendly luxury’ and that’s exactly what we experienced. There’s a choice of two dining rooms: a garden room for more informal dining, where children are welcome and can run in and out with ease, and a more formal traditional restaurant. We opted for the garden room as were dining with children and were not disappointed. It’s the little things that make the difference and at Fowey Hall attention to detail is everything – crisp linen tablecloths, gleaming cutlery and attentive but unobtrusive service. I could wax lyrical for many paragraphs about the surroundings but we were there to eat so I should move on to the food… Plymouth gin cured salmon gravlax with crab beignet and pickled cucumber was my starter of choice and what an excellent choice it was, succulent, fresh and full

of flavour. My dining partner chose the tandoori spiced grilled halloumi with a cooling cucumber raita and declared it a triumph – vegetarian starters are so often a let down, but certainly not in this case. The children were brilliantly catered for with baskets of fresh bread and prompt delivery of their main courses – they were never without something to eat which was great as it meant we could enjoy our dinner without small people demanding to be entertained. For them, steaming bowls of pasta and mouth-watering homemade burgers were the order of the day. Our main courses were equally delicious. The venison kiev for me, which I chose with some trepidation but that came highly recommended by our waiter, was a success. Similarly, the crisp buttery pastry of my partner’s goat’s cheese and Mediterranean tart was a match made in heaven. The children all had Cornish ice cream for desert, always a winner in our family. For us, the cheeseboard is a must and with a mixture of local cheeses and homemade chutney we feasted well. Head Chef, James Parkinson, is passionate about his food and local provenance is
always at the forefront – he grows herbs in the hotel’s garden and ingredients are sourced locally wherever possible. He’s a family man, which shows in his children’s menus and certainly makes the world of difference when dining ‘en famille’. One of the other great things about eating at Fowey Hall is the ‘verre de vin’ system which means there is a vast selection of wines available by the glass, including bubbles. This is genius – it means you can take up the recommendation of a different wine with each course and sample a variety of Camel Valley wines, amongst others. The true test of a good meal, especially when dining with children, is the comments at the end: “Delicious, yummy, and just lush,” were the watchwords to the end our delightful meal. We all left the restaurant with happy hearts and fond memories of a delicious meal in glorious surroundings.
Every issue, we dine undercover at a different restaurant, tasting the menu and putting the team through their paces in search of the finest eateries, freshest produce and best service. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it! Look out for our ‘Tried & Tasted’ seal of approval.

Never too late to
change Many of us dream of a change of job and lifestyle, and it’s exactly what lovely, award-winning, garden designer Jo Midwinter has done.

Mandy Milano

I
catch up with Jo at her home overlooking the Camel estuary. If you’ve ever thought about employing a designer but always thought it might be rather intimidating – then Jo’s the person for you! She is warm, easy-going and bubbling over with enthusiasm for her career and lifestyle. Conversation flows easily over mugs of tea in her colourful kitchen, her golden retriever, Harry, at our feet. Jo explains with a huge smile: “I loved gardening from an early age and enjoyed creating gardens for myself, family and
friends. I always had a strong feeling for space and shapes. The way you can create a space to make you feel more comfortable, energised or tranquil. I had also fallen in love with Cornwall – especially around Padstow. We kept coming back to Cornwall for family holidays. Little did I know that one day I would actually be working in garden design and finally living in Cornwall right next to the Camel estuary!” It wasn’t quite as simple as Jo makes it sound – there was a lot of determination involved in realising her dream. First in 2006, a move from their home in

Leamington Spa where Jo worked in IT; to live in Okehampton, when her husband was offered a job nearby. Then with her children settled and working, Jo, with a huge leap of faith, gave up work and enrolled on a garden design course at Duchy College, Rosewarne. “It was finally time to do what I had always wanted to do.” Jo says with another huge smile. “But we were still living in Okehampton – so it was quite a commitment to take on the drive to Rosewarne in north west Cornwall, let alone the added cost! But…” another grin from Jo, “life has a habit of stepping in sometimes and it turned out that two other people on the course lived nearby, so we not only shared the car journey and cost, but also became firm friends. It was a real God send!” It’s obvious that Jo thrived. In her final year at college she was joint winner of the Society of Garden Designers’ (SGD) national student of the year award. “It was wonderful!” Jo exclaims. “Just being at the awards ceremony; meeting and being in photos with designers whose work I had been studying!” Then, last year she won an SGD professional award for the garden of a contemporary coastal home in north Cornwall. I ask Jo about her philosophy on garden design. “When I approach a garden I think about how it makes you feel and how you want it to feel. I think about creating the places where it’s good to sit and reflect, places that will encourage people to spend time together, places where there is a sense
of discovery and excitement and how the garden flows between each element. I want to create a garden that will tempt my clients outside as often as possible! I like to try and find the unique character of a garden. It’s my job to raise possibilities for the garden. And I do love coastal gardens, using robust plants that can withstand whatever the weather has to throw at them. I never want to leave clients with problem plants! At the back of my mind is always… how are they going to manage this in the future?” In any spare time she has Jo likes to go surfing “though I’m not very good! My son surfs too and has moved from London to Newquay, so now I see them a lot, which is an added joy. I run and walk the Camel trail, and I love wildflowers so I photograph any I find, and blog about them. Oh, and we enjoy eating out, particularly in relaxed restaurants like Gilmores in Newquay for Mexican food, it’s a little shack by the golf course, or Scott and Babs at Retorrick Mill.” I can imagine strolling round my garden, buffeted by the westerlies, talking with Jo. I love her approach of simple but exciting; of making spaces that will add to people’s lives, and her warmth and enthusiasm for the life she has made.

• Use of space is the most important thing to get right. - Plan space for the elements you wish to include (e.g. dining, playing, growing veg) and the routes in between. • Create a mood board – A clearly defined idea will help with all future decisions. • Only select plants that work with your garden's microclimate and soil – Don’t fight it! • Structure is the backbone of the garden – Use hardy, reliable plants packed with all-year-round form to give your garden shape throughout the year.

A design for life
A chance meeting at the beach was all it took for working mothers Louise and Caroline to start their dream business of a lifetime.
L
ouise, a Cornishwoman born and bred, studied design textiles at Chelsea School of Art and worked in the London fashion industry for 15 years. She moved back to Cornwall to start a family and ended up starting a business too. Caroline is a trained graphic designer. She moved to Cornwall with her husband and kids to escape stressful city life. After their initial meeting, they were brought together by their love of all things interior. The duo have now become a successful design team bringing character and integrity to homes all across Cornwall and the South West. Their relaxed yet driven and extremely focused approach is something rather unique – not just appealing but also incredibly infectious. “It’s a perfect union”, says Caroline. “We feed off each other’s different strengths and we have naturally found our balance. We’re not perfect, and like any union we have highs and lows, but it’s always a ride and our passion and drive makes for a dynamic
coupling of our brand: Mint House.” Louise continues: “Mint House Interiors was the perfect name for us; our fresh approach to design and our constant desire to create understated elegance that fits with our surroundings. We like to call it ‘a collective happiness through design’.” Louise and Caroline’s honest approach to create bespoke designs and their thirst to give houses character ensures they will style you a home that feels comfortable and inviting and not like a showroom. Their general style is

“It’s a perfect union”, says Caroline. “We feed off each other’s different strengths and we have naturally found our balance.” not intimidation, instead it elicits a feeling of relaxation, urging you to put your feet up. Mint House endeavours to create happy homes with ‘little pockets of loveliness’. They believe a home should feel collected instead of designed. This means finding a balance between old and new furniture is key. New is nice but fresh, ‘out-the-packet’ interiors can feel soulless and uninviting, the very antithesis of Louise and Caroline’s design credo. The design team practise a fine balance between clean sharp lines mixed in with more natural freeform shapes. Louise comments: “We like a sense of symmetry, a yin and yang if you will. We just like to mix it up a bit. You won’t find any matching curtains and cushions in our projects! We prefer a younger, fresher approach to design.” Louise and Caroline hope to make all their projects smile, whether it’s an old quayside pub in Mevagissey, a newly developed
penthouse apartment in Porthtowan or a total Victorian restoration. They want to make you smile as soon as you walk through your door. They are a small family over at Mint House, using a tight team of trusted tradespeople. Louise and Caroline really care and look after them, who in turn treat your home the same way. They won’t put anything in your home that they wouldn’t love to have in their own. They feel it’s important for them to furnish your home with the best quality your budget allows. Mint House love what they do and that passion is reflected in their tireless dedication to the craft. With clients worldwide, they take on everything from simple refurbishing jobs to total renovations. Being in Cornwall, it means the team are conveniently located for dealing with the hassle of overseeing projects for second home owners and Mint House take pride in smashing forecasted holiday rental incomes. Their knowledge of the luxury holiday rental market allows them to make your property stand out from the usual crowd. Honest and open communication with clients is key to the design process. Whether the team are inspired by relaxed Californian designs, a hip Mediterranean hotel or a minimal Scandinavian loft, they hope to give all their projects a unique character and relaxing Cornish feel.

"The CCF is a grant awarding charity that supports volunteerled, grassroots community groups making a positive impact in their area."
t has always been Cornwall Glass and Glazing’s (CGG) long-term ambition to create a charitable fund in order to support its surrounding community and the company alone, through it’s own named fund, has invested an astounding £45,000 in community projects across Cornwall. However, by being a member of the Cornwall 100 Club (C100), which is the business arm of the Cornwall Community Foundation (CCF), CGG have been part of a campaign worth more than £200 000, all invested into the communities of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly with projects ranging from setting up a memory stimulation café and improving a pre-school, to supporting a local scout group and upgrading village hall facilities, all of which were made possible this year. The CCF is a grant awarding charity that supports volunteer-led, grassroots community groups making a positive impact in their area. Many companies want to

Collaborating with other businesses within the C100 is a very easy, credible and satisfying way of ensuring the combined and significant monies granted are well directed”. CGG’s own Cornwall Glass fund places focus on projects with children, people with mental illnesses and people suffering from domestic violence. The company remains an active and willing member of C100 and Mark encourages likeminded businesses and individuals to see the difference this can make to their philanthropic giving.

a very British crisp from Cornwall Mandy meets Mark Sullivan who is taking some very Cornish foods out to the world.
I
t is not without a little trepidation that I set off to meet Mark Sullivan, the Chairman of Warrens Bakery. He has earned a stellar reputation for growing companies in the food industry, in particular in developing their markets internationally. In Cornwall it started with Cornish Sea Salt, and now includes Warrens, and the Cornish Seaweed Company. But I needn’t have worried; an extremely amicable chap calls out: “Hello, come on up” from the top of the stairs at Warrens. We shake hands and he smiles warmly – the first of many; we fall into easy conversation as he sorts out tea and ushers me into the meeting room – there are a lot of colourful packets of crisps on the table, which puzzles me slightly – but more about crisps later! Mark moved to Cornwall “to relax and take things easy,” he explains with a rather sheepish grin. And although he does seem very relaxed, I don’t for a minute think he is taking it easy! Like so many of us, he had developed a deep affinity (his words) with Cornwall from childhood – it was a regular holiday haunt and later became a favourite for his own young family. So, after a hugely successful career advising food and related companies internationally, he left the bright lights of London behind and moved to Cornwall with his family. But it wasn’t long before he got drawn back into all things foodie! He met and loved the team and product at Cornish Sea Salt and quickly saw how he could help to grow the company and the range they sell. “It’s such a fantastic product”, he tells me, “with such great provenance (a word he uses a lot), coming from the highest quality water from the seas around

the coast of the Lizard, no-one else can beat us! The company already had a wonderful brand image but needed a much bigger market.” He invested in the company and got stuck in! Cornish Sea Salt is now in over 35 countries around the world and has quadrupled in size at its base on the Lizard. Mark adds, “Taking the Cornwall brand out into the world is something I’m very passionate about,” Then he met the Warrens family and a similar story emerges. “I knew I could work with the brand,” Mark explains. “It’s Cornwall’s oldest bakery. I could see the potential of making it an international brand. There is such a strong story of heritage in the shops but we run that alongside state-ofthe-art retail systems.” He is also passionate about developing the staff and cross-fertilising staff across the businesses. “Someone can join us and develop a really successful career, with a wide range of experience, across the businesses. The food industry has plenty of opportunities and I want to see it happening in Cornwall. We achieve that by being based in Cornwall but operating globally.” Right on cue we are joined by Jason Jobling, Chief Operating Officer at Warrens, who is a great example of how the company likes to grow its own, as well as attract the best. He tells me: “My father was a baker here, so I guess baking is in my blood. I started working at Warrens at the age of 12 after school, dusting doughnuts with sugar! When I turned 15 I asked for, and got, an apprenticeship training to be a baker… and now I’m Chief Operating Officer!” Not bad for a boy who started out sugaring doughnuts! has obviously been a lot of hard work and learning along the way, including stints of work experience with other bakers around the UK to learn, and bring back, new skills and ideas to Warrens. Jason passes me a bag of crisps. “This is our latest development and they are a really good example of what we are striving for.” Mark picks up the story “We recently took over The Cornish Crisp Company; an excellent concept but it was struggling as many small companies do. We saw a different way to put Cornwall on the map and developed a new range that offered appeal internationally and created The Great British Crisp Company, flying the British flag with a Cornish heart, with all the amazing provenance that comes with that. We already have great bakers who regularly work on new product development, we already work with local potato growers, cheese makers and so on. And we have the provenance of high-quality salt and peppers. It’s a real match made in heaven. But we wanted to be truly different as well as improve on the quality of crisps, so we developed new flavours around iconic traditional British meals like ‘fish and chips’ and ‘English breakfast’.” Jason grins and adds: “I clearly remember Mark coming in one day and saying: ‘Lets have this new adventure!’ It’s certainly been an interesting journey. We had a huge debate about whether ‘chicken tikka masala’ was British, and it definitely is a contemporary classic.”

So that explains the packets of crisps on the table! Mark offers me a packet of fish and chip crisps – absolutely delicious! Not to be outdone, Jason opens some chicken tikka masala ones – his favourite – and he’s right… they are gorgeous, tasty tikka chicken with a little kick of curry in a crisp. The whole range has been really well received in the trade. They have the usual core range of flavours, like salt and vinegar but they use Cornish Sea Salt and West Country cider vinegar – and there it is again, Mark’s favourite word – provenance! Whilst munching on crisps I ask them both about time off. Apparently Mark has been known to check out supermarket shelves when on holiday to see what’s new or different! And he starts to tell me about the opportunities with Cornish Seaweed Company. “Seaweed is very sustainable, hand harvested and is incredibly nutritious. We are getting some very strong interest from a couple of ‘upmarket supermarkets’ to stock it, and we can use it in our other products too!” Great provenance again, I think quietly with a smile – his passion is definitely contagious. But I persevere, and both Mark and Jason agree that family time is very important when you work so hard. Mark likes to go canoeing and kayaking on Carrick Roads when he gets the chance and loves the unique geology of the Lizard. He also likes Godrevy for a walk and a great breakfast at Godrevy café.
Jason still enjoys baking at the weekends with his three children, the eldest of whom is only 7. He has also started to grow his own vegetables “My kids love helping but generally end up making mud pies!” His favourite beach is Sennen, where he proposed to his wife, and loves the view from the tennis courts at Trelissick. But the conversation quickly returns to baking, provenance, crisps and the staff team. Jason tells me, with some pride, that Mike who runs the crisp factory started off working in the bakery. “There really are great opportunities for young people coming into the food industry with us as we grow.” Mark adds: “I really love Cornwall and feel extremely lucky to live here. And... it feels even better knowing we can make a difference to the local economy by taking great Cornish baking out to the rest of the world. Not just the best Cornish products, but the best British food, based in Cornwall is what we want to do.” And it seems highly likely he will succeed!

fabulous sunny afternoon in Falmouth and, apart from actually being out on the water, what better way to spend it than chatting to Pete Goss in the glorious surrounds of the Greenbank Hotel, drinking tea and watching the boats scudding across the water or gently swinging on their moorings. I am a tiny bit in awe of meeting a sailing hero of mine – but I needn’t have worried - Pete is warm, unassuming and hugely likeable. We are quickly chatting easily about life, sailing, taking risks, the importance of the marine industry in general, but in Cornwall in particular… and most of all… about enjoying the journey along the way. He is so obviously enjoying his journey and the story so far. He tells me
that he’s not sure why I want to interview him, and when I explain that it’s because he’s a famous yachtsman and adventurer I am rewarded with the first huge grin of the day. “I’m known as the man who broke the biggest catamaran in the world!” Actually, Pete is perhaps best known for his heroic rescue of Frenchman and fellow competitor Raphael Dinelli from mountainous Southern Ocean seas and hurricane force winds in the 1996 Vendee Globe single-handed round the world race, for which he was awarded the MBE by Her Majesty the Queen and the Legion d’Honneur by the French President. But he has also walked to the North Pole, kayaked around Tasmania, built Team Philips - arguably the most advanced sailing catamaran ever, and recreated the voyage of the smallest migrant vessel ever to make it to Australia by building the wooden lugger Spirit of Mystery amongst many other adventures. Pete is in Falmouth to talk at the launch of the new marine team of Stephens Scown. Verity Slater who heads up the marine team explained: “It’s all about drawing together our passion for the sea; all the members of the team love being on the water. It’s a big part of living and working by the sea! I have been a keen sailor all my life – especially on the Falmouth working boats. Creating the team is about bringing together our existing legal expertise and knowledge to consciously support the Cornish marine sector.” Pete chips in “I think it’s a great idea, the marine industry in all its guises is a thriving, but under recognised, sector – it contributes about £500 million to Cornwall’s economy. This is the first dedicated legal team that I’ve heard of. “ He adds with a smile. “And… if you’re not supporting the marine industry in Cornwall… what are you doing?” Verity explains: “Pete is a great example for us;

Just some of the things Stephens Scown marine team can help with:
whatever project he is involved in has adventure but also always has an innovative, technological edge and has some link to education and young people. His trip to Australia on the Spirit of Mystery involved hundreds of schools across the country. It all helps to promote the sector.” Pete lives in Cornwall on the Rame peninsula, “I love Cornwall and the people here. It’s been like an elastic band; as a child I travelled all over the world with my parents – but we always came back; it’s been the same for me, wherever I end up, Cornwall is home. And I do love the Rame peninsula, it’s close enough to the rest of the world but the right side of the border!” Pete tells me that he doesn’t remember learning to sail: “It was like learning to walk, I don’t actually remember starting to sail, as a baby I lived on a yacht for a while. My great grandfather was a ship builder, my

grandfather and father sailed; so I guess it was in my blood too.“ I ask Pete to tell me about some of the standout moments in his career so far; he grins widely. “I don’t have a career; I have a series of daft ideas! As for moments? It has to be rescuing Raphael in the Vendee Globe, saving someone’s life is definitely right up there, I get a lot of the credit but I think that Raphael’s part is forgotten, staying alive in that situation and in those conditions must have been incredibly hard. We were very lucky that it worked! The Australian navy flew out to find him and when I finally got close they switched on their landing lights to guide me in; they were flying at the absolute limit of their capabilities. We met up afterwards and I learnt that they had hovered over Raphael’s boat as I grabbed him and pulled him onto my boat, the seas were so huge we couldn’t see anything and anyway I was concentrating on getting a very sick man below decks, they told me that as soon as I got him… his boat sank! It lasted just long enough for me to rescue him. Raphael and I are still very good friends, which apparently is quite unusual.” Pete continues. “Then after the rescue, back in the Vendee Globe I fell in love with the Southern Ocean and her storms; you just can’t help be awed by it. I remember rounding Cape Horn and the stress lifting – you kinda know you’re on your way home, heading north it gets warmer and you start to peel off the layers. One particular night, it was 2am, I was in the Trade Winds doing 17 knots with the spinnaker up; it was a gorgeous clear night with a huge full moon and suddenly about 200 dolphins turned up! Just magical:
one to remember! Another very different one has to be the British Steel Challenge; I helped train the crews and skippered one of the boats. The whole journey from literally having to explain that they couldn’t bring a suitcase - it wouldn’t fit through the hatch! to becoming fully-fledged yachtsmen and women. That was wonderful. And of course Team Philip, sailing that boat was breathtaking! It was a one-off opportunity to build a 120ft boat with that amount of innovation – to really challenge the norm. I will ever be proud of that project. We had a huge team of 110 people and over 1.2 million people came to the visitor centre. And finally sailing her was definitely one of my moments!” We could go on – but it was time for Pete to check in for his evening talk. We transferred to Mylor Yacht Club for Stephens Scown to welcome their guests from a diverse range of the marine industry, from charities like Turn to Starboard, and people from Pendennis Shipyard, to tiny boatyards, and everything in between, all keen to hear from Pete. As for the future, Pete tells me “I’m going sailing with my wife Tracey, we’re doing up an old 34ft boat, and then we’re off round the world… slowly! Now the kids are older, we can have an adventure together, Tracey has been with me through everything – she was the one who suggested we sell our home to fund Aqua Quorum. I’ve been round the world several times, but this time I will get to stop and look at all the places I’ve raced past – apparently Cape Horn is very beautiful.”

hether contemporary or traditional, beautiful wooden flooring can transform a home, providing a sense of warmth and individuality from the textures and grain of the wood. This natural material can be contrasted against chic ultra modern furnishings or used to complement period features to great effect. Even better if you can secure beautiful wood from a local, sustainable source. The enterprising wooden flooring company Aspen & Ash has added to its superb range of wooden floors by securing close ties to the famous Tregothnan Estate in Truro enabling the company to procure the estate’s beautiful English Oak. Tregothnan, one of the largest estates in the UK, is renowned for its range of premium British grown teas. The oak which is superbly grained and many centuries old is coming to the end of its natural life and is set to be highly prized by both Cornish homeowners seeking some sustainable, home-grown and quintessentially Cornish heritage and further afield in London where interior designers have been wowed by its quality, style and provenance. To add to its sustainable credentials the oak is dried and the floors manufactured exclusively in Redruth meaning it can be offered for sale direct to the public, along with Aspen & Ash’s extensive range of new engineered flooring and heritage floors manufactured from old reclaimed timbers. A family-run business specialising in bespoke joinery and high-end kitchens, Peter Randles returned to his native Cornwall to establish Aspen & Ash and to cater for the rising popularity of wooden floors and the unbeatable warmth, character and value they add to interiors. Aspen & Ash will be at The Cornwall Home & Lifestyle Show on the 30th April and 1st May at the Royal Cornwall Showground, in Wadebridge.

magine one of those fabulous, unforgettable days with friends and family out on the seas around Falmouth. Sun glistening on the water, maybe you spot some dolphins or a cheeky seal sunbathing on the rocks. You help your kids catch their first fish, and take some delicious fish back to barbeque for supper; it can’t get any better! We’d heard that Rob and Andy offer just such a memorable experience aboard Anglo Dawn. As Rob, owner of the boat, tells me: “We do everything from fishing trips for the serious sport anglers who travel the world for their fishing, to shark fishing and mixed species trips… but what we really love to do is take a group of friends and family out on the boat in the same way that I take my own family and friends out! Which might mean
some fishing with lots of friendly advice if needed, to a bit of wildlife spotting, to a stop in a little harbour for an ice-cream; with lots of interesting stories from the skipper along the way. It’s just like having your own boat!” They cruise out from the safe haven of Falmouth Marina on one of the most comfortable boats operating in Falmouth bay to enjoy a great day at sea. Anglo Dawn – a fast, spacious and family friendly boat – is the perfect choice for any day at sea around the beautiful Cornish coast; the experienced and friendly crew will introduce you to the local environment and help you make the most of your day. Falmouth Marina is on the outskirts of the harbour town and even getting onboard couldn’t be easier. Park in the free car park next to the pontoons at the marina; your crew will greet you and lead you through the maze of beautiful yachts to Anglo Dawn. After a quick but thorough briefing, you’ll be on your way down the Penryn river and out into the estuary or venture out into the glorious Falmouth bay to enjoy some time afloat. If holidays are all about creating lasting memories, then this has to be one of the best!

Anglo Dawn can be chartered by a group for a full day, half day or an evening. Individuals are also welcome. Fishing trips for beginners right through to specialist groups are catered for.

Take a breath and deal with the day-to-day stresses of everyday life, with a little help from Amanda Winwood.

ow do you deal with stress? Juggling family and work among the rush of city life? We all have times when we need to restore some balance and “catch our breath”. My work with Made for Life and Spiezia often takes me away from home. Days can be long, with lots of meetings. Do I love what I do? Absolutely. Can it be challenging at times? Without a doubt. So, I thought I would share a simple method I use – every day and at least eight times a day – it takes just one minute. ONE MINUTE BREATHING Find a quiet spot ideally (although I have used this on the tube in London in rush hour – it still works!). Ground yourself by putting both feet on the ground (hip-width apart) and take a deep breath, through the nostrils preferably. When you breathe in, you should feel your belly gently expand. Exhale through the mouth, feeling your belly slowly contract. Repeat 5-6 times. I usually close my eyes whilst I do this and encourage you to do the same.
When you are done have a gentle stretch or wiggle your fingers and toes. Repeat as often as is necessary. Just take that minute… for you. PUT SPRING INTO YOUR STEP Many people are training for marathons (including our own lovely Juliette, Manager of the Made for Life Foundation). With this in mind, it’s time to think about our feet! How are yours? Local company, Celtic & Co, definitely has your feet in mind with its gorgeous Celt boots and Seasalt offers great shoes too. Giving your feet and toes some TLC is vital.
Hugs from Amanda x
Amanda is well known for her organic range ‘Spiezia’, which is available in the spa of Browns Hotel, Mayfair, and also as founder of the Made For Life Foundation, working with people recovering from cancer. www.spieziaorganics.com
Your spring treat for feet, homemade scrub Ingredients
1 tablespoon of baking soda 1 tablespoon of brown sugar (Demerara) 1 tablespoon of olive oil A handful of chopped mint (fresh is best) – optional
Method Mix together before taking a bath or shower and pop into a waterproof container. Use to soften feet and this scrub can be used on elbows and knees too. Mint gives a great scent to uplift if used.
Did you know?
Feet have no oil glands so keeping them softened through applying balms and oils is great for their health!
