In this issue, our stunning opening feature is all about discovering some of the fascinating wildlife beneath the waves here in Cornwall. If you’re lucky you might spot everything from dolphins to basking sharks or seals, all from the coast path. Better still, get out on the water on a guided safari or plunge underwater to swim with these beautiful creatures. Our thanks to John Boyle and Fionn Crow of Shark Bay Films, and underwater photographer Charles Hood for all their expert knowledge and fantastic photos. We also take a trip to the idyllic Isles of Scilly to explore the rugged beauty of St Mary’s – a true paradise found, and a world away from Cornwall just a few miles off our coast! Plus I return to the ever popular Victoria Inn, in Perranuthnoe, to catch up with owner Nik Boyle a year after he was our Foodie guest editor and find out what a difference a year has made… including getting married. As usual, we showcase a fabluous array of properties currently for sale, should you wish to purchase your own little slice of Cornwall. But, equally, if you’re just coming down for a long weekend, we suggest some fabulous places to stay, as well as galleries to visit, sumptuous spas, and some great ideas for eating out. So hop in the car or get on the train, head west, and let the next adventure begin!

Celebrate September in St Ives With balmy evenings, the year’s highest sea temperatures and smaller, out of season crowds, St Ives has a lot to offer in September. Chairman of the St Ives September Festival, Dave Brotherton, considers this to be a great time of year to head to this premier Cornish town. The festival – which this year includes legendary musicians Rick Wakeman, Phil Beer and the world famous rainforest sounds of Baka Beyond – has been celebrating music and the arts since 1978 and is an annual

highlight of the Cornish social calendar, running from 10th to 24th September. “This is the most eclectic line up we’ve had for years, with plenty to look forward to,” says Dave. “With our full programme of arts events as well as daily, free entertainment in Norway Square, we’re sure you’ll have a great time!” Book tickets or get more information at www.stivesseptemberfestival.co.uk or by calling 01726 879500.

Porthleven filmmaker to give talk on Somali pirates Porthleven filmmaker, John Boyle of Shark Bay Films (who features in this issue’s cover story) has travelled the world filming and producing stunning documentaries of the natural world, many of which have been distributed through National Geographic. His exploits have led him to encounter the effects of modern piracy, which has increasingly dogged the worlds of commercial shipping and yachting in recent years. Having personally interviewed a number of the key players involved, including the pirates themselves, John presented his findings in a fascinating documentary, and an accompanying book, Blood Ransom. John will be presenting a lecture at The Poly in Falmouth on Thursday 8th September at 7.30pm, ‘Blood Ransom: The Story Behind Somali Pirates’. The evening promises to be revealing insight into an often misunderstood phenomenon, so book your tickets now while you can! Admission is £8 for adults, £6 concessions. Book tickets or get more information by visiting www.thepoly.org or by calling 01326 319461.

Open a window into another world to discover the beautiful marine wildlife found off our shores.

E

very year, thousands of visitors from around the world flock to the Cornish coast, drawn to the beautiful blue waters. If you’re lucky you might spot a few of them: seals, dolphins, whales, basking sharks and blue sharks among other wonderful creatures. If you’re thinking of taking the plunge to experience life beneath the waves, then Cornwall really is the place to do it. We have it all – a seabed truly teaming with life, with a unique opportunity to explore the awe-inspiring wildlife, shipwrecks and reefs off our shores. A good place to start is with Charles Hood, a respected underwater photographer, who runs shark and sealife safaris off the coast of Penzance. A keen and well-travelled diver, he knows these waters and their inhabitants arguably better than anyone. “When living in Kuwait as a child, I snorkelled whenever

I could and even borrowed a scuba set, teaching myself to dive in the process”, he explains. “Later I joined the student sub aqua club and spent far too many hours diving instead of studying… I bought my first underwater camera (a Nikonos III) and wangled myself onto many expeditions as the underwater photographer.” But what’s so special about Cornwall? “Where else in the world can you live within a mile of the coast and observe such a variety of marine life?” Charles replies. “Within half an hour of leaving home in St Hilary I can be swimming with basking sharks, snorkelling with blue sharks, playing fin tag with Atlantic grey seals or diving on a historic shipwreck.” As well being an accomplished diver, Charles is on the pulse with technology, using GPS and

words by:

Felix Rowe echo sounders to locate sites, and satellite data on sea temperatures, chlorophyll levels and warm currents to track down the larger sea creatures. Charles shares more than a little in common with Porthleven filmmaker, and founder of Shark Bay Films, John Boyle. Like Charles, John has travelled the world, diving in oceans with beautiful wildlife. But it’s telling that they both chose Cornwall as their base. I catch up with John and his collaborator, Fionn Crow, in their Porthleven studio. Shark Bay Films is entirely independent and self-sufficient: John and Fionn devise the concepts, write, shoot and edit the films, selling them through distributors, many through the National Geographic. Their latest project ‘Castro’s Secret Reef’ pre-sold worldwide even before completion. So, having filmed award-winning

continues Fionn. “Plus the golf stream brings a lot of interesting life here; the water is warmer than it should be.” So what is Cornwall’s best dive site? “There are so many fantastic sites its difficult to pick a favourite”, says Charles. “However, it would probably be the Runnelstone. A mile offshore of Gwennap Head, this complex critter encrusted reef rises from a depth of 50 metres to just below the surface. As well as the prolific amount of marine life, the seabed is littered with numerous shipwrecks including the famous carrier the City of Westminster, which founded in 1923. There are so many wrecks around the Runnelstone it’s sometimes impossible to determine which particular one you are diving on!” Charles continues: “In Whitsands Bay, there are a couple of wrecks of particular notoriety. documentaries in stunning locations around the world, what draws John to Porthleven? “Where else would you want to be?” he asks, looking around. “I love Cornwall. It’s home.” With stunning views overlooking the harbour in one direction and the deep blue ocean in the other, it’s not hard to see why. “Mounts Bay is Shark Bay to us!” he says with a smile. Originally a lawyer, John began diving and underwater filming as a hobby. After sending out his first film speculatively, he was surprised just how quickly and positively it was received. Soon the hobby became more serious, and he relinquished the promising law career to pursue his dream. John might be making a tenth of what he could as a lawyer, but here he has found his paradise. “The West Country has some of the clearest waters in the UK, being a fringe that juts out into the Atlantic”,

favourite. She sank during the Second World War and sits upright in just 20 metres of water. This makes it an ideal wreck for all levels of divers and, as it is in relatively shallow waters, you get a long duration underwater. The decommissioned Royal Navy frigate HMS Scylla was deliberately sunk in 2004 to form an artificial reef; it’s now virtually completely covered in anemones, sponges and corals producing a living nursery for many species of fish.” But arguably nothing leaves a more lasting memory than the sight of basking sharks – gentle giants of the ocean, the second largest fish in the sea, and frequently spotted in Cornwall. “By far my most incredible encounters have been snorkelling with basking sharks”, says Charles. “The largest one we spotted was over nine metres long and probably weighed over 10 tons. In September 2008 the waters of Land’s End experienced a second gigantic plankton bloom and the Celtic Sea was simply brimming with

basking sharks gorging on the nutrient rich waters. There must have been over 400 sharks – just an incredible sight. Being plankton feeders they don’t have any teeth and are harmless to humans.” Fionn recounts a similar experience at Praa Sands. “One year, there was an incredible amount of basking sharks – you didn’t even need a boat, you could swim out from the beach and snorkel with them! It was also the first time I’ve actually seen them breach [jump out of the water].” Charles’ pièce de résistance is his ability to track down the allusive blue shark, a naturally shy fish, not used to human interaction. “They can be found within an hour’s boat journey from Penzance but you need a secret concoction of ‘rubbydubby’ to attract them. One occasion we had several blues around the boat when they all of a sudden disappeared – behaviour usually indicative of a larger predator in the immediate vicinity. A couple of minutes later a dozen or so pilot whales simultaneously blew and surfaced right beside our boat – what an incredible spectacle to witness!” The question arises of how sealife tourism sits with conservation, but the consensus among John, Fionn and Charles is that experiencing sea creatures in their environment can only be a good thing, provided it is respectful and helps in our understanding. Though critical of ‘catch and release’ trophy fishing, John’s view is that: “Shark tourism is a really good thing. It’s fantastic increasing people’s awareness of the sheer diversity of wildlife off our coast, which in turn leads people to respect and protect it.” Charles takes a similar stance: “Providing operators are responsible and take care as far as possible from disturbing the wildlife then bringing people and animals together is a fantastic way to both educate and encourage conservation.” All three are keen to debunk the common misconceptions of all sharks as devious, bloodthirsty human hunters, perpetuated by the legacy of the film Jaws and clickbait

tabloid stories. “People still have this mentality that sharks will attack”, concedes John. “We get silly season every year with the inevitable reports of great white shark sightings off Cornwall. But the sad truth is we are the predators – worldwide, sharks are being seriously overfished.” Fionn chips in: “As a diver, you’re a strange creature in the shark’s environment. You’re far more likely to see the tail of a shark disappearing than a mouth coming towards you!” In fact, if respectful of these unique and largely peaceful creatures, there can be nothing more exhilarating than swimming with sharks in their natural habitat. Charles recommends taking a boat trip with a company who has a WiSe or Cornwall Marinelife Boat Operators accreditation. “You are never too young or old to start snorkelling”, he says. “To progress to scuba diving the best place to start is with the British Sub Aqua Club. They offer introductory ‘try dives’ usually for free or at minimal cost. There are also a number of

commercial schools that offer courses – see your local dive shop.” But if the idea of swimming with sharks sends your blood cold, there are always opportunities to experience some of the magic from the comfort of dry land. “So much of Cornwall’s wildlife can be witnessed from the shore using a good pair of binoculars”, says Charles. So, if you’re patient and keep your eyes peeled on a clear summer’s day, you might just be in for a treat – whether dolphins, sharks, whales or seals. Interestingly, as Fionn points out, many of these creatures are in fact here in Cornwall all year round, it’s just that we’re more likely to see them in the summer, owing to the typically flatter seas, clearer visibility, and the warmer weather which draws plankton to the surface, bringing basking sharks up from the depths. Charles encourages everyone to experience it firsthand: “Get out there and do it! Whether it’s walking the South West Coast Path with a pair of binoculars, chartering a vessel or donning a wetsuit and snorkelling with sharks, give it a go. The most common comment I receive from my guests when taking them out is, ‘I had no idea of just how much wildlife there is off the coast of Cornwall – you must have one of the best jobs in the world’.” They make a good point!

Goonreeve Barn A large barn conversion in a peaceful and rural location.

INFORMATION Spacious converted barn-house Four bedrooms in two-storey barn Two bedrooms in single-storey barn 15 acres of land Stunning rural location Great rental potential

s

ituated in the rural hamlet of St Gluvias between Truro and Falmouth, lies Goonreeve Barn – a characterful barn conversion, surrounded by 15 acres of land. If you’re looking for rural living, land and lovely big rooms, this property might just fit the bill. The barns have been tastefully converted, with original-style features maintained throughout – exposed beams and stone feature walls take this property back to modern-rustic chic. There is plenty of scope to add your own style to this unique barn-house. A mix of exposed floorboards and tiling adds character and paired with generously proportioned living spaces, a useful utility room and carpeted bedrooms, Goonreeve retains the functionality needed in a family home. The agricultural land is currently rented by a local farmer but can be made available should you want to make the most of it and truly live off the land! The two-storey barn conversion houses four spacious bedrooms, one with an en suite bathroom, as well as a large kitchen and living room area, and a separate sitting room with french doors leading onto the garden. The further two bedrooms are found in the attached single-storey barn, with an open-plan living room and kitchen area complete with wood-burning stove positioned against the exposed stone wall.

With a double garage and driveway parking, this property would be a perfect choice for a buyer who wants space for both family and guests - or perhaps pets! While the two barns are attached, there is huge rental potential here should you just want to reside in the main barn, as the single-storey has everything you need to function as a selfcontained abode. The property sits just a stone’s throw from the ancient town of Penryn, one of the oldest market towns in the county, with an abundance of independent shops and cafés as well as a thriving art scene. St Gluvias itself is a quiet hamlet, offering a peaceful and slower pace of life away from the bustling town of Falmouth and the city of Truro – but it’s not far from the amenities that both provide. So if you’re looking to find a way back to simple countryside living, while keeping in touch with the modern world, Goonreeve Barn could be the opportunity to acquire it.

teeped in history and beautiful architecture, Yeolmbridge lies a few miles north of Launceston, the market town known as the ‘gateway to Cornwall’. This individually designed house sits just outside the centre of Yeolmbridge; home to the Grade II listed Yeolm Bridge, considered one of the oldest and best built medieval Cornish bridges. The house is surrounded by land and paddocks perfect for equestrian buyers, complete with a patio area and gorgeous formal gardens. Inside, the home boasts five spacious bedrooms, three of which have en suite shower rooms. One bedroom also has a dressing area leading through to an extra room with potential to be transformed into a nursery or guest bedroom. The rooms inside this unique house are bright and airy, but the property still oozes character with exposed beams throughout, even running into the stunning conservatory that leads out onto the gardens. You are greeted by solid oak floors as you enter the house. These continue through to the dining room and spacious lounge with a slate hearth fireplace that gives this house warmth and will make it easy for any family to call this property home. Venture outside and you’re spoilt with just

over a third of an acre of formal gardens complete with a large patio, perfect for entertaining guests in summer. The gardens sweep around two sides of the property, displaying a stunning array of flowers and shrubbery that adds a splash of colour to the landscape. The land itself is split into two areas, the first lies nearest the bottom of the property and boasts 1.3 acres as well as a small orchard with a variety of fruit trees. Look further out to the second field and there is huge potential for a paddock, as there is a small stable already on the land. The surrounding fields provide a wonderful area for children to explore and play in. Every element of this home has been installed with love by the current owners, although it still has plenty of scope for adding your own touch to this wonderful family home.

hen it comes to home improvements, you know you’re the best at what you do when TV personality and all-round property expert Sarah Beeny requires your services on her own home. Resin Drives recently won the contract to re-surface Sarah’s 450 metre driveway; just another celebrity name to add to their customer list, following the transformation Uri Geller’s 2,000 metre drive. As someone who knows all about improvements and restoration work adding aesthetic and monetary value, Sarah’s endorsement of Resin Drives speaks wonders. So, why not achieve stunning results for your drive by giving it a bit of the star treatment. After all, it’s the first thing you see of your home as you approach it. What could be more pleasing than knowing your property is set aside from the rest with its own unique colour and style? The Resin Drives team believe in looking after our environment and are taking steps to lower their carbon footprint. All of their resin drives are made up of natural stone and 100% organic resin, which looks fantastic, and is as strong and durable as concrete, without costing the planet. A large choice of standard and bespoke shades makes the decorative potential unique to your taste and colour scheme, while virtually any pattern and style

can be achieved, including lettering and images, giving the ultimate ‘wow!’ factor. Resin completely transforms driveways, patio areas and even paths. If you’d like to go high-tech, Resin Drive’s Scandinavian-designed ice and snow melting system can be used beneath any of its resin surfaces, to ensure it remains free from dangerous ice and snow build up. The robust heating system comes with an intelligent thermostat and fully automated heating system. The completed driveway itself is porous so there’s no issue with drainage, it’s resistant to weed growth and occasional power washing is all the maintenance that’s required. Resin Drives offers a 5-year insurance-backed guarantee on all installations. To make your resin drive even easier to obtain, Resin Drives has introduced a superb ‘12 months interest-free’ option. So you no longer need to think about saving up or even spending your savings. Keep your savings secure in the bank and take advantage of this offer, enabling you to have your beautiful drive, path or patio now and spread the cost over a year!

Art

Creatively Celtic Steve Slimm, bringing artistic inspiration to Bristol.

A

rtist, poet and musician, Steve Slimm, while not strictly speaking a Celt, is convinced that his ancestry must root itself somewhere in Celtic heritage. Having turned up no further ancestral leads than Midland towns, he is nonetheless convinced that there must be a stronger connection, especially as on arriving in Penzance at the age of 17, it felt so much like coming home. Steve, an artist with an impressive portfolio, lives and breathes the ancient Cornish landscape and, through his work, his audience is touched by its rugged authenticity and wholeness. “Celtic land has remained essentially untouched for centuries, with only relatively small pockets of modern civilisation,” Steve muses. “It’s all about extremities: Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Cornwall, Brittany – places on the edge, away from city life and the maelstrom of humanity.” Although spanning several decades, Steve’s Bristol/Bath connection has intensified over the past two or three years, through his relationship with Bristol artist Tom White at Clifton Fine Art. To mark their move into larger premises on Perry Road (the former Cube Gallery), this September, Clifton Fine Art will play host to a one-man exhibition of evocative

work by Steve Slimm, entitled Rich Beyond Compare. Including an album of his own music – of the same title and created for the show – this exhibition will display the similarities between the processes in which Steve puts together both his music and his paintings. “My private studio practice as a musician is very similar to my painting – turn off the thinking mind, get on with playing (with sound or paint), keep going until lost in the process, then see what happens.” The music, like his painting, is fresh, unadulterated, vibrant and exciting yet grounded in something essentially and deeply human. Evocatively, the introductory slide show to his website contains the words “Beyond the reach of the city, we have dreamed of a place, away from the neon counterfeit, awash with colour and light.” For Steve and the essence of his work, this really says it all.

How to get there?

ornwall is often the destination of choice for UK holiday goers looking to escape the hustle and bustle, in search of that little slice of paradise. And it’s not hard to see why. But what do you do if you already live in Cornwall? The answer is simple – you head to the Isles of Scilly! My wife and I decided to do just that this spring. Scilly has all the qualities beloved of Cornwall, while carrying a rugged charm and unique identity entirely of its own. Having visited both Bryher and Tresco in recent years – and fallen in love on each occasion – we felt it was time to get to know St Martin’s. And what a decision that turned out to be! Combining the best bits of the other islands, St Martin’s is simply paradise found: hills, small woodlands, moorland, dramatic cliffs, long powdery white sand beaches, translucent turquoise seas and views that will take your breath away, leaving you standing there with your jaw on the floor. We have found our favourite island; a paradise just 28 miles from the Cornish coast, with a demanding travel time of 15 minutes! Arrival on the small jetty saw a welcome by three of the team from our hotel, Karma St Martin’s, who efficiently unloaded our luggage into the small van and drove it the 50 yards to the front door! Scott was

charming and welcoming – it felt as though we floated through the reception area to a soft brown leather armchair, welcomecocktail and a personal concierge’s guide to the hotel, dinner, breakfast and the island. To be honest, I didn’t hear a word as we sat in awe of the view. Once we had finished our drink Scott re-appeared as if by magic to show us to our room – attentive, but no pressure. The room was immaculate with intricate Balinese wallpapers selected by designer Tina Driscoll. Karma Group’s business started in Bali and India and is spreading to Europe with plans of luxury resorts to come. Our superior ocean view room was perfect – modern, comfortable and with every luxury you could hope for. My wife’s excitement at the mesmerising vista from the window said it all! With very few cars on the island, St Martin’s really is a world away from the mainland – a true idyll to escape it all. We timed our visit to coincide with the Walk Scilly Festival, making the most of the rare opportunity to get closer to nature and to ourselves. The festival is held every year in April, followed by a Walk Scilly Weekend in October. We enjoyed an enlightening foraging walk with expert Rachel Lambert, later being treated to a gourmet foraging

Lifestyle dinner, back at the hotel. The rock samphire tempura served with gorse flower relish was divine! Check out Rachel’s book, Wild Food Foraging in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, for some fantastic ideas. Walking around St Martin’s is a real treat, whichever direction you choose to take – it’s just about big enough to lose yourself for the day but not big enough to get lost. We found plenty to explore over a few days on the island, meandering round the paths and trails to discover view after view after view. You can’t visit the island without making the trek to the iconic daymark erected north east of St Martin’s in 1683 by Thomas Ekins – it’s an awe-inspiring walk, with 360-degree views across Chapel Down. No countryside walk is complete without a pit stop in a proper traditional pub. Thankfully, we were lucky enough to stumble upon the Seven Stones Inn, a lovely stone building offering a good pint and quite possibly the best view from a pub garden anywhere in the UK. It was also a delight to meet Fay Page in her studio and workshop. Fay makes amazing silver charms and jewellery all inspired by the islands – worth a visit just to hear the tale of the whale on the beach and to see the subsequent charm she produced. On our travels, we also passed Churchtown Farm, home to Scilly Flowers – an inspiring industry now sending 90,000 bunches of flowers to Cornwall, the UK and beyond. Call

in to meet the friendly team and send a ‘wish you were here’ gift home (they will wish they were there when they see your photos!). Of course, after each day exploring, you want nothing more than to retreat to the perfect sanctuary. With so much having made an impression on our minds, the bar had been set very high. Fortunately Karma St Martin’s exceeded every expectation. It’s the little touches that make the difference. Every guest is given a ‘wine card’ with £100 credit (billed to the room if used), allowing you to sample top wines from the cabinet, before choosing a whole bottle – an inspired idea, and the Pomerol gets my vote! Then there’s the record player linked to the Sonos system in the wine lounge, where

you can pick from the hotel’s owner John Spence’s personal vinyl collection. And, if you’re here for some rest and recuperation, then a treatment in the luxury spa will do just the trick. The hotel’s restaurant is the perfect spot to watch the sun go down, but it wasn’t just the view that impressed. A chef once told me that you can judge any restaurant based on whether they are brave enough to offer crème brulee on the menu. Well, Karma St Martin’s certainly rose to the challenge – the consistency, presentation, taste, enjoyment and pure indulgence of the dessert was symbolic of every single aspect of the experience on offer at Karma St Martin’s. It’s something that Ashley, the General Manager, and his young and delightful team are working hard to maintain and improve across the board. Obviously improving on perfection is very hard to do, but I think they might just do it. If you happen to be planning a wedding, I’m hard pressed to think of a more sublime location; the Honeymoon Suite, Tean Conference Suite, and the beach below make

the perfect trio for your big day. Karma St Martin’s is a truly fantastic hotel – it exudes luxury, style and elegance all within the most spectacular of settings. It really needs to be visited to be believed – it is a little corner of heaven on the water's edge. Another favourite was Dibble and Grub on Porthcressa beach, St Mary’s. Here we savoured the last taste of paradise sat with a glass of sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio, a salad, wrap or sandwich (I love the lamb souvlaki in pitta), watching the sea and wishing we could stay forever. Inevitably, all good things must come to an end, and with heavy hearts but lighter feet, it was time to head home. Words really don’t do justice to the majesty of Scilly – it has to be experienced. Upon arrival, you feel all your stresses and strains quickly melting away quicker than the ice cubes in your freshly prepared cocktail. Our biggest conundrum now is finding time to plan our next visit!

anking in the top ten beach destinations in Europe, St Ives has it all. Strolling around the town, visitors can browse the rows of boutique shops, eat pasties on the beach and take tips from the local surfers as they line up for some of the best waves in the south west. Indeed, many of us yearn for that summer break in St Ives, when the temperatures soar and the rich, inviting blue waters draw us in; when the ice cream soothes our dry throats as we peruse the local wares and idly watch the world go by. But what about low season? Immediately, the pros of heading south out of season include no queuing on the M5, cheaper parking and clear Cornish roads. What’s more, the accommodation in St Ives, being one of Cornwall’s premier destinations, becomes much more affordable during the autumn, winter and spring, meaning there are almost more reasons to come then than during the summer! With no crowds to get in your way, an out-of-season break offers you the best of this stunning coastal town without the restrictions of the school holiday rush,

and there’s plenty to do, even in the cooler months, down to watching in awe as the Atlantic storms rage. It doesn’t take much to see why artists come here from all over the world. While the Tate Gallery is currently closed, set to reopen in March next year, the exhibitions and creative displays there are testament to the artistic draw of this highly sought after location. Being a hub of creative talent, St Ives offers those with a touch of creative flare the chance to express their holiday joy throughout the year. With a sea view to inspire, Barnoon Workshop offers a dedicated space for arts and crafts in the heart of the town, while I Should Coco – the

Enjoy a glass of mulled cider in front of the roaring open fire in St Ives’ oldest pub, the Sloop Inn; treat yourself to a spa day at the St Ives Harbour Hotel or do a spot of shopping in the wonderful collection of small independent shops in the town. One event that you should certainly pencil into your diary – the highlight of the out of season social calendar – is the St Ives September Festival, running from 10th to 24th September. Showcasing a full display of international arts and culture, from classical, world, folk

and jazz music, to flamenco, poetry and theatre, this festival is packed with entertainment, including a performance from the popular Rick Wakeman! Festivities are set to kick off on the 10th, with a wedding of English history and folklore from Fairport Convention – often heralded as the greatest folk band ever; at a Cornish festival, what could be more appropriate? Outside of the busy summer months, irresistible offers on short breaks can be found. St Ives boasts a wonderful range of hotels, guest houses and self–catering accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets, from the luxury Tregenna Castle and Garrack Hotels to the super-funky Cohort hostel, where you can take over the whole building for just £500 a night for up to 45 people! December in St Ives is a special time with a calendar of events planned throughout the whole month, kicking off on Friday 2nd December when Father Christmas arrives in the harbour on the RNLI lifeboat. Finally, as the year draws to an end and we start to look for that ultimate end-of-year blow out, the spectacular fireworks and streets filled with fancy dressers promise a memorably happy new year. So, while the summer will see thousands on the streets of sunny St Ives, let’s not forget that all year round, this stunning seaside town has something for everyone. Indeed it’s then, when the sun starts to shy, that you can truly experience the real St Ives!

Stay

With its emphasis on comfort, design and great food, St Enodoc Hotel in Rock is a classic seaside hotel re-invented and revitalised.

“It’s not only in food that Cornwall sets its own agenda”

W

e’re talking minimalist glamour, comfortable beds and expansive views of the Camel estuary. The St Enodoc Hotel has just sixteen double rooms and four suites. Many have sea views and are designed to be both comfortable and practical. Decorated in bright colours with original oil paintings on the walls by celebrated Cornish artists Terry Frost, Jessica Cooper and Dave Pearce, the rooms mirror the beauty of the undulating farmland in the surrounding area. From the outset you’re in safe hands, which extends into the food as awardwinning Masterchef 2008 winner James Nathan heads up the kitchen. No hotel stay is complete without a spa treatment. The Spa at St Enodoc offers the classic day spa experience without the rush. Many treatments are organic, as you would expect – it’s not only in food that Cornwall sets its own agenda. The product range makes the most of skin-friendly ingredients. To complement this, there’s plenty to explore locally. The gardens are some of

the most interesting in England and with surrounding sandy beaches and coastal paths, the hotel provides an ideal base from which to discover Cornwall. Whiz over to Port Isaac where you can sometimes see the crew filming scenes from Doc Martin or the world-famous Fisherman’s Friends singing shanties. Nearby is St Enodoc Golf Course, the beach at Rock, sweeping round historical Brea Hill to Daymer Bay. Take a trip across to Padstow on the ferry and breathe in the wonderful sea air. It’s this fresh, coastal air, combined with the hotel’s extremely comfortable beds (they passed the tough Cornwall Living test) that will ensure you sleep soundly at St Enodoc, drifting off to the calming silence of a long Cornish night.

S

teeped in history and set amidst spectacular wooded countryside, Launcells Barton is a family-owned, Grade II* listed manor house in Launcells, a small parish situated near Bude in north Cornwall. Combining lovingly restored historic buildings with a purpose-built events barn, owners Matthew and Lara fuse old world charm and contemporary design to create a sophisticated venue with timeless appeal. Matthew’s family have owned Launcells Barton since 1949. He grew up there, surrounded by beautiful countryside and close to the sea. Life on the old dairy farm was idyllic. Years later, Matthew invited Lara to meet his family and experience the unique charm of his childhood home. With the property in desperate need of restoration and repair, he found himself apologising all the way to Cornwall, afraid that Lara might never warm to a place without central heating! Thankfully, his fears were unfounded; she immediately fell for the house, its myriad hallways, the grand exterior and the great sense of history contained within its walls. Having worked tirelessly to restore the house, Matthew and Lara excitedly ushered in a new era at Launcells Barton, finally

S

trolling along the only promenade in Cornwall, soaking up the jawdropping views of the bay, just a short walk from the bustling town centre replete with independent boutiques and galleries, I can only be in one place: Penzance. Penzance really does have it all. The most westerly town in Cornwall is fast becoming a foodie haven, with many top chefs, from near and far, drawn to the area to feast upon the fabulous local produce, including fresh fish from Newlyn, and the array of artisan producers nearby. If you like your food seasonal, packed with flavour and sourced within a surprisingly small radius, then you are spoilt for choice in Penzance – bars, restaurants and gastro pubs to tantalise every taste bud. If culture is your thing, you’ll find plenty here. Penzance has long held an association with the arts, and this continues to thrive today among the several art galleries including The Exchange, Cornwall Contemporary, and Penlee House Gallery and Museum, exhibiting art old and new. In fact, you only need to walk the historic streets to absorb a taste of culture inherent in the classic architecture. Marvel at The Jubilee Pool, the recently restored Art Deco pool, which is currently gaining national recognition as one of the finest examples of a seawater pool. There are many fine public spaces to explore: Morrab subtropical gardens, for example, which is also home to Morrab Library, the largest private collection of books and one of only 32 private libraries in the UK. Penlee’s gardens, meanwhile, are perfect simply for sitting and unwinding, or taking in a show at the open-air theatre. And then we get to shopping. Peruse the historic streets such as Chapel Street, to discover rows of independent shops and boutiques, showcasing a range of traditional artisan skills, from luxury soap producers to belt makers. So what are you waiting for? Penzance is calling, and it’s time to fall in love!

Mandy Milano

Passionate about designing interior spaces for extremely vulnerable people; Mandy talks to the Boex twins.

eeting the Boex twins wasn’t difficult – I only had to walk upstairs to interview this ethically-minded, innovative, design and build team. I am greeted warmly in their colourful, airy studio and immediately mistake Sam for Will – something they are used to. They are a growing, exciting business and Sam is just back from Saudi where they have won a contract for their first international project on a new, four-story school for children with Downs Syndrome for a Saudi charity.

Background They were born and raised in Cornwall, going their separate ways when they went off to university, Sam to Newcastle to study furniture and interior design, and Will to Plymouth to study earth sciences. “A surfer’s degree!” quips Sam. They both chose their respective universities for the same reason “To get away but still be by the sea.” Will explains, “But even when we were 18 we thought we’d work together… in Cornwall. We didn’t know what but knew it would be a good idea and something we definitely

wanted to do.” After university Sam worked for a design company that was doing all the graphics for the Eden Project as they opened, as a 3D designer. Will headed off to London but was keen to get back to Cornwall so after a year took a job with Cornwall Council. Then in 2004, Sam took the plunge and started his own design company, “working from my bedroom doing small retail stuff and some furniture design.” The business started to grow, tenders were won, and he put the call in to twin brother Will to come and run the company with him. Sam explains with grin: “We are mirrortwins: one right handed the other left, one predominantly right brain the other left, and so on. So it’s a match made in heaven for the business. I am the main creative one, start things off, do the designing and then Will takes over the project management, and we both get involved in the people side.” Smiling, Will adds: “But it is quite hard for staff, we work very well together, we are sensitive to how the other is feeling, often knowing intuitively what is going on and what needs to happen… we are having to learn to talk out loud a lot more!” What they do It was working in the healthcare sector where they really found their calling. Sam tells me: “That first year together we were

working on a waiting room for a local hospital, it just ignited a passion in us to work in healthcare.” They now work for Children and Adolescents Mental Health Services (CAMHS), on paediatric wards, in dementia care and other hospital settings. “These are some of the most vulnerable people at a really difficult time.” Sam tells me passionately, the words really starting to flow, “And they have to enter this daunting institution, not knowing where to go, or what to do. The interiors are often grey, cluttered and complicated to navigate even when you are well! So by working with staff and users we can make the space more welcoming, easier to use, much less daunting and still be functional.” Will picks up the tread. “Yes they have to be fit for purpose: easy to use for both patients and staff. We spend a lot of time upfront talking to all the people who will use the space, getting to the bottom of what is really needed.” Sam grins again. “We love the work, we are so lucky to be making a difference to people’s lives when they are feeling so vulnerable.”

“It’s about a lifestyle we are incredibly happy with; the excitement of running our own business and doing something good”

On Cornwall “We have had challenges being based down here – but it is part of the ethics of the business really.” Will explains, “It’s about a lifestyle we are incredibly happy with; the excitement of running our own business and doing something good. It’s about developing new, more flexible, business models that work.” They seem to be getting the balance about right too, with plenty of work on the books, but also regularly seen jogging down to the reef for a surf at lunchtime. Weekends are for family, friends and the beach. Will says: “Cornwall is an amazing place, every weekend is like you’re on holiday, you just go straight out and it’s all there for free.” Sam chips in, “And we are now doing the stuff we did as kids with our families. And… we love coming to work on Monday morning!”

estled into the hillside with stunning, uninterrupted views of the River Fowey is the four-star, boutique Fowey Hotel. Built in 1882 to facilitate visitors to the region as the railway expanded into the south west, this 37-bedroom Victorian hotel has a wonderful history. During WWI the hotel was used as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers and for a large part of WWII it was home to US Naval officers. Celebrated guests who have stayed at the hotel include world famous romantic novelist, Daphne Du Maurier, and author of the children’s classic, Wind In The Willows, Kenneth Grahame. Indeed there are framed letters from the author to his

son, Alistair ‘Mouse’, adorning the hall walls. Paying homage to the author and his time at the hotel, there are now willow dens in the shape of Toad, Badger, Ratty and Mole, as well as a willow story-telling boat, for children of all ages to enjoy in the lower tea garden. The hotel sits on the Esplanade and offers easy access to the town of Fowey, the quayside where you will find regular ferries to nearby Mevagissey and Polruan, and to the South West Coastal Path. The cobbled streets of Fowey offer plenty of choice in terms of restaurants, pubs, cafes, shops and galleries. The hotel itself boasts an elegant 2 AA Rosette restaurant, Spinnakers, which offers fantastic views of the River below and delivers mouth-watering, regional produce at its best with an unobtrusive yet always professional service. Adjacent to the restaurant is the Lookout Gin Bar which, as its name suggests, specialises in world gins as well as local and global ales, ciders and wines. The bar, terrace, tea gardens and restaurant all offer the most idyllic settings come rain or shine for an afternoon tea, a famous Cornish cream tea, lunch or dinner.

ooking for a great getaway without the hassle of airport searches, delayed flights and time consuming transfers? Why not look nearer to home? With petrol and diesel prices being less than they have been, the stunning south west coast has to be an easy choice. Padstow, located on the north coast of Cornwall, famous for its food and drink, also has seven fantastic beaches on its doorstep, some of which are among the top surfing beaches in Europe. Exploring the coast is a joy. Surfing or no, the beaches and coves in and around Padstow and Rock,

opposite and easily accessible by ferry, are simply stunning. The Camel River is idyllic and popular for sailing, fishing and bird watching. Being tidal, the estuary, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is an ever-changing landscape. If you prefer your explorations on land rather than on water, the Camel Valley Trail offers you the choice of walking, cycling or horse riding. Follow the old tracks of the Bodmin and Wadebridge Railway from Wenfordbridge via Bodmin; alternatively, you can always hit the South West Coast Path with amazing views of the Atlantic coast. Overlooking Padstow harbour and offering the best views of the Camel Valley Estuary is the four-star, 58 bedroom Metropole Hotel. With a combination of family, double and single spacious bedrooms, comfortable lounges and bar, al fresco drinking and dining on the deck, an AA Rosette restaurant and casual brasserie, a spa and the only outdoor pool in Padstow (seasonal), this hotel is the perfect place to stay when visiting Padstow and the north coast.

ith stunning views of the sea and a relaxing environment, Trevalsa Court Hotel is an idyllic place to stay, whatever the time of year. Situated in Mevagissey on Cornwall’s south coast and secluded by acres of subtropical garden, this hotel by the sea offers beautiful walks around the area and gives you access to some of Cornwall’s famous visitor attractions. A short drive from the hotel you can find the world famous Eden Project, with its staggering tropical and Mediterranean biomes. Beneath the rocky cliffs where the hotel is perched lies a stunning sandy beach reached from the path that leads from the hotel’s garden. The coastal path takes you to Mevagissey town and harbour, which is just a short walk from the hotel. If you feel like exploring the surroundings of the hotel or just sitting back and enjoying the beautiful scenery, Trevalsa Court Hotel offers everything for the perfect break.

The hotel itself is understatedly grand, with subtle coastal décor reflecting the Cornish landscape. Trevalsa, Cornish for ‘house on a cliff’, contains a cosy seating area with a roaring fire in the autumn months, an intimate bar and an informal relaxed restaurant. Many of the rooms have eyecatching sea views. The real pièce de résistance is the restaurant, recently awarded its second AA Rosette for culinary excellence. Make the most of those wonderful views over Mevagissey Bay, while tucking into the mouth-watering dishes showcasing Cornwall’s amazing produce. Head Chef Adam Cawood uses only the freshest seasonal ingredients in his menu to create delicious, interesting and simply cooked food. Trevalsa Court is also the perfect place to enjoy a delicious afternoon cream tea, the Cornish way: with a stunning view! While undoubtedly pretty in the summer, south Cornwall really is a fantastic place to visit during the autumn months too, avoiding the crowds to enjoy more of its beauty all to yourself – each season brings a unique experience. Why not sign up to Trevalsa Court’s mailing list via its website, to receive the up-to-the-minute offers for October and November that will be announced later in the year? y n a p m o c s ’ o w T Getaways have never been more romantic than at the Atlantic Hotel, Newquay.

S

ituated on the highest point of ten acres of headland, Atlantic Hotel Newquay doesn’t simply offer some of the most premium accommodation and hospitality in Cornwall; it does so with a view that you can’t help but fall for. Moments from the famous Fistral beach, one of the south west’s most stunning stretches of sand, it’s perfect for a couple seeking a romantic break by the sea. Having recently launched a proposal package for anyone popping the question, the Atlantic has an impressive series of wedding packages, so you can plan your day your way, down to the tiniest detail. With an original sweeping staircase, grand entrance, marble floor, chandeliers and a ball room with Art Deco styling, the interior is perfect

for your event and, when the sun’s shining, you can say ‘I do’ with the ocean as your witness, beneath the intimate gazebo. What’s more, even if you’re not tying the knot, the hotel’s Romance Break package offers a stunning and relaxing getaway with sand, sea and sunsets that neither of you are ever likely to forget. And, while the beach is stunning, you’ll be tempted not to leave the grounds, especially as you lounge next to the azure outdoor pool, or kick back in the hot tub, both of which overlook Towan, Great Western, Tolcarne, Lusty Glaze and Porth beaches. Here in Cornwall, we all know that there’s nothing quite like fresh sea-air to work up an appetite. Being so close to the ocean, even sunning yourselves by the pool will be enough to get your tummy rumbling. Fortunately, from pasta to succulent steaks to seafood, the delectable menu, in the hotel’s own Rosette awarded champagne bar and restaurant, Silks, is a product of a firm belief that fresh and local tastes better. So, while there are many reasons to take a break in the south west, it can sometimes be difficult to decide where to stay. Fortunately, the team at the AA four star Atlantic Hotel, Newquay, offer just as many reasons to visit them as you have to visit Cornwall.

Peninsula paradise Uncrowded beaches, outstanding eateries and wonderful places to stay: the Roseland Peninsula is a glorious holiday destination.

B

ordered by the Fal Estuary to the west and the Atlantic to the east, the start of the Roseland Peninsula is a long-standing point of discussion between local historians and long-time inhabitants. Geography aside, one thing everyone can agree on is the beauty of the Roseland, the name of which derives from ‘ros’, the Celtic word for heath or gorse. Miles of spectacular, unspoiled coastline provide intriguing inlets, secluded coves and remote beaches to be explored. For those who like to be active, you can walk the South West Coast Path, cycle the Cornish Way, or sail the Carrick Roads and Falmouth Bay. St Mawes village, at the end of the peninsula, is a hub for watersports enthusiasts; bring your own equipment or hire a boat, stand up paddleboard, canoe or kayak. If you’d rather sit back and relax, there are plenty of opportunities to watch the Roseland amble by with a boat trip. Enjoy a sea breeze on the St Mawes Ferry, which offers yearround connections to Falmouth: a 20-minute journey through the world-class scenery of the Carrick Roads, including two historic castles and, if you’re lucky, a glimpse of the marine life found in and around Falmouth Bay. The King Harry Ferry links St Mawes and the Roseland with Feock, Truro and Falmouth, a crossing that has existed for over 500 years. During summer months, a small passenger ferry runs between St Mawes and the enchanting St Antony headland.

After taking in the sea or river air, head to one of the Roseland’s award-winning restaurants for a long lunch or relaxing dinner. Hotel Tresanton and The Idle Rocks, both in St Mawes, are two top end, relaxed places to eat, drink and watch the world go by. The Driftwood, tucked away near the picture postcard fishing village of Portscatho, is the only restaurant on Cornwall’s south coast to have been awarded a Michelin Star; the menu promises to awaken taste buds, incorporating only the freshest, locally sourced seafood and finest, West Country meats. Or there’s the Kings Head, in Ruan Lanihorne, a country pub serving simple food, cooked well. On sunny days, try the Hidden Hut, which sits high above Porthcurnick beach and is rated the UK’s number one beach café. The only thing left is to find that perfect base for exploring all the Roseland has to offer. One of the oldest independent agencies in the area is Portscatho Holidays, with a large selection of waterside properties, contemporary homes and traditional country cottages situated all over the peninsula.

A YEAR ON…

& it just gets better!

Mandy meets Nik and wife Laura, the team behind the fabulous food and warm welcome at the Victoria Inn.

A

“This might be the best pub cooking I’ve had in my life”

wesome and booming are words that ebullient, inn-keeper Nik Boyle uses a lot: “Cornwall is booming, the Vic is really finding its feet and life is awesome”, the past year has been awesome and his lovely wife Laura is… awesome. “Just the perfect foil for me, she runs the business, keeps the team motivated and is the warm smile that greets you when you come in.” Nik tells me with a huge smile. The couple married a year ago shortly after taking over the pub. Laura laughs and says, “I have always loved this part of Cornwall and always dreamt of living here and I don’t ever see myself living anywhere else but over the last eighteen months, it’s felt rather like I was on witness protection… we sold our home and business in Hampshire, moved to this lovely, tiny village in Cornwall, got married and changed my name!” But Laura tells me it has all been wonderful and wouldn’t change it for the world. As from September the ex-ballet dancer excitedly tells me she is dancing again and teaching classes on Saturdays in Penzance.

A year on and this hugely welcoming couple are running a very successful pub and B&B with a reputation for some truly fine food. One of only eight pubs in Cornwall listed in the Michelin Pub Guide, featured in Harden’s and the Trencherman’s Guide, where Nik cooked alongside Jude Kereama from Kota (“my old boss”) at the launch in Bristol. And… Tony Turnbull from the Saturday Times magazine says of their food: “this might be the best pub cooking I’ve had in my life.” The 12th century pub is hugely atmospheric with lots of natural wood and stone, a gorgeous refurbished dining area and pretty walled garden for some sheltered sunshine. Nik continues, “We have a great team here, Laura takes care of front of house, and in the kitchen I have Gary and Lizzie as my second chefs, Gary was here before and Lizzie worked with me in Hampshire; and local boy Jake who has just finished his apprenticeship. Our philosophy on food is still the same: great quality Cornish ingredients cooked carefully with love.” Laura adds: “And the whole team sign

up to a very simple motto: we are here for the customers, without them there is no us! We work hard on that with new staff.” As well as gaining a huge reputation for delicious lunches and suppers, their Sunday lunches have become the stuff of legend; locally cooked meat and produce, cooked with love; they’ve had to extend Sunday lunch hours to midday to 4pm, something I shall definitely be trying. And for their B&B guests, Nik says, “We like to really show off and make guests feel really special. Give them a five-star experience – our breakfast has the works including freshly made pastries and bread; full Cornish breakfast and avocados with eggs, everything you could want… but wouldn’t expect in a little country pub.” I ask Nik what he cooked first for Laura, he laughs and says, “ it was butterflied lamb at her parent’s house. But the main thing I remember is that it was the first time meeting her parents and I broke her father’s barbeque! Imagine… you invite the chef round and he breaks the barbeque! It got mentioned in my father-in-law’s wedding speech several times!” When I ask what he’s learnt over the past year Nik thinks and grins at Laura. “I’ve learnt to share my toys! It’s always been about me, and my goals. But Laura and I are 50:50 in this, so I’ve had to learn to share, and…” he adds, grinning at Laura, “it has been quite tough at times! But she manages me incredibly well. Oh, and being an innkeeper is truly awesome. I love it!” As I’m leaving I meet two guests on their way home after a night’s stay. Tina and Geoff Arnold from Kent are thanking Nik for a truly wonderful time. They tell me: “The food is beautiful, friends of ours who are staying locally are coming back tonight for their third meal here in a row. It’s just so nice to find somewhere to eat really well and stay in such wonderful surroundings.” Good luck for the next year! We’ll definitely be back to this fabulous little pub!

Visitors to Cornwall will notice a focus on West Country beliefs and traditions, meaning they can go and discover how fishermen ‘bought the wind’ and where to find the most sacred sites in this beautiful part of the county. Alongside the fascinating collections, the temporary exhibition space features shows which explore different aspects of magic and witchcraft, ensuring that there’s always something new to see. There are also regular guided tours and a lively programme of talks. The library can be visited by appointment too, in case the historian in you wants to sift through the archives. Exhibitions and events to pencil in your diary include the current ‘Glitter and Gravedust’ exhibition, which explores the history of Halloween and whether it lies in Paganism, Christianity, or simply in modern commercialism. You can also take a guided tour with folklorist Steve Patterson, who is leading walks every Wednesday until 27th September and showing the magical areas of Boscastle, including the harbour, the Valency Valley, Willapark, the Stitches and more. Amanda catches up with Cornish windsurfer, Izzy Hamilton, to discuss Rio, training and looking after yourself in the elements. wind changes and every aspect that can provide us with a gain.

What does your training regime look like? You need really strong shoulders and great leg and back muscles to windsurf, so weights and pumping iron are key to my training. I go to the gym six days a week when I am not racing. When I am racing I will be out on the water and have physiotherapy twice a day. It’s intense but I love it.

What does your eating schedule look like? I eat really healthy freshly prepared meals with lots of seasonable vegetables and need plenty of protein too.

How do you relax? I surf! I love to do this in Widemouth where I grew up. I can see the waves from my home so feel really connected to the sea. So how’s it going for you as part of Team GB? I work with Team GB representative, Briony Shaw as her buddy to find out how we can be the fastest we can. We look at the tides,

How do you look after yourself with so much exposure to the elements? My hair is a big challenge as it gets fried in the sun, wind and sea! Hands in particular get cracked and sore from windsurfing too. Spiezia Head & Hair Oil has been amazing. Age Well Intensive moisturiser really helps soothe my skin and Muscle Ease with Rosemary really soothes aching hands and shoulders.

What advice would you give to anyone who wants to pursue a sport to Olympic standard? Choose a sport you really love and don’t take it too seriously when you first start. Just enjoy it and have fun with it, with friends who can support you. What’s your ultimate goal? To win a gold medal for Great Britain next time around.

recently met up with Windsurfer extraordinaire and Olympic Team GB representative Izzy Hamilton who is heading out to Rio as part of the GB Sailing team. Izzy moved from Kent to Cornwall when she was just 11. Her parents ran a holiday complex and Izzy really got into windsurfing from a very early age at an innovative kids’ club. She was windsurfing competitively from the age of 11 and was spotted by Team GB as a prospective Olympic representative in 2013.
