Summer is the time when Cornwall really comes alive – every village and harbour bustling with activity, boats coming and going, and the sound of splashing and laughter in the air. And we’ve been lucky to enjoy some beautifully sunny days here at our base in Porthleven, even spotting a pod of dolphins off the coast! With rugged moorlands, miles of iconic coastline, crystal clear waters, and grand country houses, it’s really no surprise that Cornwall is a popular location for film and television. You’ll often see film crews out and about across the Duchy, using the landscape as the backdrop for the latest screen adaptation of a much-loved classic. So in this issue, we take a look at some of the wonderful locations caught on camera. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Jo Midwinter, an inspiring woman who gave up her career and relocated to the Camel estuary to follow her dream of becoming an awardwinning garden designer. Her fascinating story shows that anything is possible if you put your heart in it! We also paid a visit to the Lizard Lifeboat Station to discover more about the everyday heroes of the RNLI, risking their lives to keep our waters safe. As usual, we showcase a range a stunning waterside properties currently on sale through Savills, highlighting the beautiful homes on offer in the south west. And finally, we suggest a fabulous array of things to do and places to stay while in Cornwall. Enjoy!

A piece of Cornwall for your home
House hunting from a distance doesn’t have to be hard
It’s the personal and unique touches that make a house a home; if you’re looking for beautiful and lasting furnishings, think slate. Cornish slate, in particular, is renowned for being of the highest quality and particularly hardwearing. Stevens Cornish Slate creates bespoke slate products, handcrafted and made-to-order, using authentic Cornish materials. The look and feel of each piece of slate is different; no two products are ever the same, bringing a unique and personalised industrial style to your home. Since forming in 2012, Stevens Cornish Slate has become well known as a skilled and artistic manufacturer of luxurious home accessories. From humble beginnings creating slate signs and tableware, the team is now a trusted and respected maker of cutting-edge and high-end pieces.
Grace Jones recently moved from London to Cornwall. “It takes ages to visit your preferred areas and get a feel for the place”, says Grace. “But if you’re also working full time at a demanding job, the task is a daunting one.” That’s exactly why she used a property search agent, choosing Stacks after meeting Nicola and being very impressed by her knowledge and professionalism. The result? “Many hours saved trawling online and visiting areas which looked good in photographs, but left me sadly disappointed. Stacks gave me access to a wider range of properties, including those that hadn’t yet been advertised. Nicola produced a selection based on my requirements, so when I made those long journeys west, she
met me with a planned itinerary to get the very best out of the time available. Nicola’s knowledge of the local market is second to none. She pointed out the good things about an area, told me about local trends and recent changes, so I had all the information with which to make a balanced decision.” Grace continues: “Nicola negotiated the price and supported the sales process through to completion, taking the stress away, leaving me free to focus on my moving plans. Using Stacks was the best decision I made.” 07770 901348 www.stacks.co.uk
Take, for example, the flexible three-piece reversible chess table, which can be transformed into an ordinary coffee table; incredible handcrafted house signs; and a full Cornish Kitchen signature range. Looking for a property in Cornwall? Get clued up! The use of a search agent was often considered the preserve of the rich and famous but no longer and canny buyers are turning to the service of experienced property search agents like Nick Turner, FRICS, whose ability to find suitable properties actually
save clients money. Pre-inspection means that a client sees a property with the benefit of having received a report and visuals before travelling. No wasted journeys and associated costs. With Nick negotiating with the vendor or their agent, the likely saving on the purchase price more than covers the fees involved. The opportunity to see properties not on the open market is opened up to clients as estate agents contact Nick on a regular basis to let him know what is coming to the market shortly. So if you’re looking to buy a home in Cornwall, and want the benefit of insider knowledge, speak to Nick now. 01647 253188 www.nick-turner.com

CAUGHT ON CAMERA A breathtaking rugged coastline, sheltered coves, the isolation of the moors, beautiful houses and gorgeous villages… the perfect location!
words by:

H
ardly a month goes by when someone isn’t filming something in Cornwall. With its stunning coastline, from the rugged north coast beloved by Poldark, with dashing young men on galloping horses and gorgeous windswept heroines, to the sheltered calm of quiet coves and estuaries fit for Daphne Du Maurier and Rosamunde Pilcher. Cornwall just about has it all, including the weather – we have calm hot sunny days with clear blue skies and storm lashed landscapes with huge waves and threatening, dark brooding clouds, and just about everything in between… and all in the same week! Whatever the weather or location; Cornwall looks good on screen and is a much loved location for TV series, documentaries and blockbuster movies. Film crews of all shapes and sizes are made welcome in the Duchy and agencies like Visit Cornwall and
Cornwall Council are happy to lend a hand by suggesting the perfect film location or helping to arrange filming permission. And why? Because the film business brings lots of money into Cornwall, from the filming itself to the tourists who come to follow in the footsteps of a much loved character or author. From the Doc Martin effect in Port Isaac (aka Portwenn in the popular series), to the much-lauded new Poldark series: from zombies in Falmouth with Brad Pitt, to Maggie Smith and Dame Judi Dench filming Ladies in Lavender in Cadgwith, or Wycliffe filming the thought-provoking detective series down on the Lizard; Cornwall makes a stunning backdrop and there is a real value to the local economy. For instance, Germans are our biggest groups of foreign tourists by far: because they love Rosamunde Pilcher! The author’s a household name there. Over the past

twenty years German company, ZDF films have made over 100 films of her books with more in the pipeline, and they are watched by around six million viewers each time. Many of whom then visit Cornwall to see their favourite locations. The stunning Elizabethan manor, Prideaux Place, on the beautiful North Cornish coast, has been the location for fourteen of her stories and is now a mecca for visitors from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Owner Peter Prideaux-Brune always likes to take a cameo role in the films shot at his home – his credits so far include a chauffeur, a gin taster and a coroner. Peter’s wife Elizabeth tells me: “Peter and I love having films here and Peter likes to take a cameo role, a la Hitchcock, in the Pilcher films! Apart from meeting well known actors we find the crews fun and considerate to work with, once you get used to the endless cables and people in every

corner of the house. We feel a great sense of pride seeing the house and garden on screen as we have worked so hard to restore them. The extra publicity also helps greatly with our visitor numbers!" Bonython Manor and its gardens on the Lizard is another popular location for Rosamunde Pilcher films. Other Cornish Estates, little villages and isolated coves feature in many films and TV programmes. Director Tim Burton seems to like filming in Cornwall he used Antony House in East Cornwall to film part of his recent film, Alice in Wonderland, and has now come back to the Roseland to the tiny hamlet of Portholland to film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children with Samuel L. Jackson and Chris O’Dowd.
And let’s not forget the ongoing Poldark series, where the Cornish scenery was more than a match for a shirtless Aidan Turner. St Agnes Head, where iconic engine houses perch on the clifftops offering a silent reminder of Cornwall’s mining heyday, were a natural location choice for the filming of Poldark. The area doubles as Nampara Valley in the show. Some of the cliff scenes where filmed near Padstow and feature stunning views out over the Camel estuary. Aidan Turner and a hoard of other cast members descended on Church Cove to film nighttime ship wreck scenes. Porthgwarra cove sits at the heart of the St Aubyn Estates and was used to film some swimming scenes and landings; the filming took place over a week including one all night filming session. The rich mining heritage of the west Cornwall coast linking Botallack and Levan was used. Cameras rolled with Levant Mine playing the role of fictional Tressiders Rolling Mill while Owlas and Crowns near Botallack starred as Wheal Leisure. An absolute mecca for Poldark fans, of which there must be millions!

Then there is the sea itself from the beautiful BBC Coast series, to short wildlife films about basking sharks, dolphins, seals or the fabulous birdlife. And, of course, old sailing ships create a magical feeling on film; we were lucky enough to catch up with Shane McCarthy owner of Atlantic Productions and more recently Square Sail Ventures, which owns and runs Charlestown harbour, also featured in Poldark, and the gorgeous Phoenix, a 112 foot, two-masted brig; she was built in Denmark in 1929 and converted to an eighteenth century brig in 1996. Shane, who started in the entertainment industry in 1983 working with such iconic acts as U2, the Rolling Stones and Madonna tells me “Coming from West Cork in Ireland, it was a natural fit, the communities and beautiful coastline are very similar. I have always been involved in all things maritime: I love fishing and sailing. My
family is moving to Cornwall from Cork and the whole business will be based here. It’s not just about using Cornwall as a location there is a wealth of talent here, set construction, rigs, staging all anyone could need for a production we can provide in Cornwall – they really don’t need to bring film crew with them!” Shane has already introduced ‘green screen’ to Charlestown, a huge outdoor space for filming anything and putting the backdrop in later. He and his team sailed Phoenix up to London this winter for the premier of “In the Heart of the Sea”, Phoenix plays the whale ship Essex on which Moby Dick was based. Shane adds “Luckily we got back just before the storms hit! But it was fantastic; one of the most fabulous things I’ve done; sailing up the Thames at night; they even opened Tower Bridge for us! I really do believe that Cornwall has a great future in filming – it could be equally good for everyone.”
With our cover feature placing the spotlight on the fantastic filming locations in our beautiful Duchy, we thought you might like to have a look on our website at a great film taken from the skies in association with Visit Cornwall. www.cornwall-living.co.uk

olotho Mews lies on the edge of the historic Killiow Estate in a rural setting between Bissoe and Kea, yet just three miles from the centre of Truro with it's magnificent cathedral and highly regarded schools and college. Bolotho Mews is a very attractive collection of barns centred around a central courtyard, approached over a long private lane shared with just one neighbour. There are many leisure activities to enjoy on the doorstep with golf at Killiow and sailing at Mylor. The main barn is currently set out as the family’s accommodation with two beautiful and spacious barns which have been converted in to Five Star Gold Award holiday lets, creating a good income. The main house is accessed to the rear with a broad entrance hallway making a welcoming first impression. The oak staircase leads to all the principle reception rooms on the first floor; a lovely bright series of rooms all enjoying views out over the gardens and countryside beyond. The kitchen really is the heart of the home featuring a large range cooker set in an inglenook and a high vaulted ceiling and triple aspect making for a lovely airy room. An exterior deck and staircase makes a great link out to the lovely landscaped garden to the rear. Laid to lawn it has great privacy as it is screened by tall shrubs and specimen trees.
A central courtyard offers ample parking for the two beautifully presented letting barns, Bramblings and Skylarks, and access to the orchard. A large timber barn consists of two loose boxes and a tack room as well as covered storage for cars, boats or garden equipment. The paddock extends to about ten acres and provides a great vantage point to enjoy the views of the countryside, to the side is a small orchard and a pretty woodland walk leading to a small stream. The garden for the house is very private. The nearby village of Carnon Downs has wide range of amenities including mini-market and doctors surgery. For the equestrian-minded, or cyclist, the Bissoe trail lies in the nearby Carnon Valley and links the south coast at Devoran with the north coast at Portreath. There are many other bridle paths in the locality making the area ideal for anyone with equestrian interests.

Waterside House is remarkably convenient by boat to all the facilities of Fowey across the river, whilst the historic village of Polruan has two pubs, village stores, a strong community spirit, village hall and regular passenger ferry across the river to Fowey, one of Cornwall’s most historic communities renowned for its safe deep-water anchorage, excellent sailing and good restaurants. rom time to time a property comes available that simply ticks all the boxes. Perched upon the path to Treyarnon Bay Beach, this property gazes out over the rugged, north Cornish coastline and, as you wheel your suitcases up the large, gated driveway to The Beach House, you’ll be tempted to judge this book by its cover. And so you should. As you walk in, you’re immediately charmed by the house’s individual character – the result of cleverly used, reclaimed materials throughout create a true ‘beach house’ feel. After a long day exploring the bay, as you unwind for the evening, you can drink in the views from the master bedroom which, commanding a floor of its own, comes complete with a beautifully understated en suite, vaulted ceiling and its very own woodburner, so you can get cosy. Four other bedrooms appear on the lower floors, including a guest room with en-suite bathroom as well as a family bathroom and twin shower room on the bottom floor. You won’t have to worry about the kids – they’ll keep themselves entertained in the old garage,
now converted into a games room, leaving you plenty of time to sink into the hot tub. The sitting room, located on the first floor, provides a beautiful, open space to warm up in front of the wood-burner after a day carousing in the outdoor pool. With Padstow on your doorstep, you’re privy to an excellent range of local shops and a supermarket. After a leisurely cycle down the popular Camel Trail, which lines the banks of the Camel Estuary, you can soak up the local culinary scene with a tempting choice of Cornish pubs and boutique restaurants. This stunning property has all the makings of the perfect lock up and leave holiday home, and at the same time offers a comfortable, permanent residence to a family looking to relocate.

ometimes, as we sit down for our weekly dose of Grand Designs, it can become all too clear that having an idea for a development and actually making it a reality are both very different things. What’s more, as you turn to the property market, it becomes immediately difficult to find something that matches up to what you had in mind. Yet, situated in three acres of gorgeous landscaped grounds, lies Churchtown, where your dream has been laid out for you. Enjoying beautiful views across traditional country gardens; with a wonderful, openplan living room laid with flagstones, a fabulous kitchen and well appointed bath and shower rooms, the main house is comfortable to the last touch. It’s a tempting new home in its own right, not to mention the attached, three-bedroom cottage boasting equally satisfying views over the grounds. What’s more, across the rear courtyard, you’ll find the newly converted old forge. Having been painstakingly renovated, this outbuilding now has three bedrooms with a master en suite, as well as two open-plan living areas and kitchens. Cleverly designed, this conversion works well both as a whole and as individual, one and two bedroom
units. Each living room has its own unique character; while one is a contemporary, light and breezy mezzanine bordered by glass, the other is resplendent, with vaulted ceilings, a huge, earthly fireplace, formal dining area and authentic stone walls. Outside, the charming gardens include a gently sloping lawn, which forms the central feature of the main garden, with various beds planted with shrubs and perennials along the north and western sides. A woodland area on higher ground has carpets of bluebells and snowdrops, rolling down to camellias and rhododendrons while the heated swimming pool, lying on the eastern side of the garden, embraces the last of the evening sun. In a market where it’s becoming increasingly difficult to impress, Churchtown speaks for itself, with so much and more to offer those who simply don’t have the time to develop their own archetypally Cornish, perfect country home.

olperro is one of the most picturesque fishing villages on the south coast. The village itself hides inside a narrow harbour entrance protected by hills, where smuggling once prospered. For centuries, the village has been a pilchard fishing and processing port, exporting throughout Europe. The village is largely protected, ensuring that its character is retained. Seaways occupies a truly idyllic setting, nestled in the cliff face with breathtaking views out to sea and over the harbour. The house could be equally at home on the French or Italian Riviera. Seaways was once the home of the Doctor Zhivago actress Rita Tushingham and her husband Terry Bicknell, having spent their honeymoon in Polperro in 1962. The stunning vista can be enjoyed from the principal reception rooms and all three first floor bedrooms. The sitting room is a fantastic space with an inviting wood burner set within a marble fireplace and doubleheight ceiling looking up at the galleried area, currently used as a gym. The large window is another impressive feature, providing an abundance of natural light. Seaways was lovingly renovated by the current owners, creating a luxury family home. The bespoke walnut kitchen is a chef’s dream with a double AGA, Bosch oven/grill and a colourful glass splash back. This is a superb entertaining space
with double doors leading out to the south facing patio. The master bedroom has a fabulous en suite bathroom with a freestanding bath and French doors leading out to a balcony enjoying the spectacular views. The attic ‘apartment’ on the second floor is a great space for children. There are two main rooms, with further sleeping areas, and a large, luxurious bathroom. There’s a great sense of privacy and tranquillity in the landscaped grounds. The marvellous heated swimming pool and hot tub are sheltered by a curved wall with views over the sea and harbour. Seaways has a double garage and private parking area, with a private pathway leading down to the house. Access to Seaways is a steep, stepped pathway, which may provide a challenge for some. A fantastic investment opportunity as well as a beautiful home, Seaways has been occasionally holiday let by the present owners with weekly rental incomes in excess of £4000.

O
ccupying a truly magnificent position above Cape Cornwall, possessing some of the most enchanting and quite frankly awesome views of the Atlantic, Porthledden is a truly exceptional property. Built in 1909 as a private home by the former chairman of De Beers, Francis Oats, the mansion later served as a school for evacuee girls during WWII, before lying empty and desolate until 2003. Then began an impressive restoration. Stripped back to its granite shell, it was pieced back together by local Cornish and south west craftsmen, with modifications that left the house with ten bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a contemporary three bedroom apartment and stabling, to list but a few of its enviable attributes. It’s a genuine challenge to pick out the most desirable traits of Porthledden. Superb equestrian facilities, for instance, make this seaside property a true individual. What’s more, the land and gardens extend to a total of 7.2 acres, including a broad terrace spanning the width of the house, leading to the large, sheltered garden to the north. Mainly laid to lawn, it also includes a kitchen garden with raised beds, a potting shed built from the same materials as the main house,
as well as a cleverly sunken trampoline for the kids. Here, an archway has been created, leading down to the Cape and sea beyond. Inside, residents are wowed by the impressive reception hall, Elizabethan drawing room with its ornate plasterwork ceiling and the fabulously accommodating family kitchen. Upstairs, a huge landing enjoys wonderful views through the oriel window, down over the Cape. On a clear day, the subtropical Isles of Scilly can be seen beckoning on the horizon. The interior is beautifully furnished with modern touches that contrast wonderfully with the early 20th century exterior. Spacious bedrooms, beautiful, classic reception rooms, a guest apartment and walled gardens all lend towards making this house a home. With so much to offer on such a stunning stretch of the Cornish coastline, Porthledden truly is an incomparable property.

With its emphasis on comfort, design and great food, St Enodoc Hotel in Rock is a classic seaside hotel re-invented and revitalised.

e’re talking minimalist glamour, comfortable beds and expansive views of the Camel estuary. The St Enodoc Hotel has just sixteen double rooms and four suites. Many have sea views and are designed to be both comfortable and practical. Decorated in bright colours with original oil paintings on the walls by celebrated Cornish artists Howard, Jessica Cooper and Terry Frost, the rooms mirror the beauty of the undulating farmland in the surrounding area. From the outset you’re in safe hands, which extends into the food as awardwinning, Masterchef 2008 winner James Nathan heads up the kitchen. No hotel stay is complete without a spa treatment. The Spa at St Enodoc offers the classic day spa experience without the rush. Many treatments are organic, as you would expect – it’s not only in food that Cornwall sets its own agenda. The product range makes the most of skin-friendly ingredients. To complement this, there’s plenty to explore locally. The gardens are some of
the most interesting in England and with surrounding sandy beaches and coastal paths, the hotel provides an ideal base from which to discover Cornwall. Whiz over to Port Isaac where you can sometimes see the crew filming scenes from Doc Martin or the world-famous Fisherman’s Friends singing shanties. Nearby is St Enodoc Golf Course, the beach at Rock, sweeping round historical Brea Hill to Daymer Bay. Take a trip across to Padstow on the ferry and breathe in the wonderful sea air. It’s this fresh, clean air, combined with the hotel’s extremely comfortable beds (they passed the tough Cornwall Living test) that will ensure you sleep soundly at St Enodoc, drifting off to the calming silence of a long Cornish night.

Your Kingdom, Your Holiday, Your Way A family escape from the city this summer should include something magical and that’s what awaits in the ‘Kingdom” of Tregenna in St Ives, Cornwall. Tregenna Castle is a real castle in a magnificent 72 acre estate. Set above the stunning seaside resort of St Ives, the hotel has dramatic views of white sand beaches and the glorious Cornish coastline. Children are invited to enter this magical kingdom and become King (or Queen) of the Castle for the duration of their holiday. A full programme of complementary activities has been arranged to delight and entertain the little ones. Every day is different but they might participate in The Great Tregenna Bake Off; build a den and bake bread at Camp Kernow or hunt high and low for treasure on a scavenger hunt. If organised activities aren’t their thing, why not try surf school - lessons for adults and children are available - or sea fishing. The friendly reception staff have an abundance of ideas to keep the whole family amused for the entire holiday. Little ones are catered for in the Ofsted ‘outstanding’ Castle Kids Club, which is extremely popular - book to be sure of a place. While the kids are busy, adults can enjoy a wealth of leisure facilities, including the 18 hole President’s golf course and a spot of pampering at Castle Beauty. Come together and round off the day with a family meal in the superb Brasserie, which offers delights to tempt tiny tastebuds, while easily satisfying more sophisticated palates. Alternatively, if you’re having trouble dragging the kids away from the pool, Chef’s takeaway service can be ordered with ease and taken by the poolside. Tregenna Castle Resort offers a wide choice of family-friendly accommodation; including family hotel rooms and spacious pole lodges and characterful cottages set among the lush sub-tropical gardens. Once the children are asleep, it’s the perfect opportunity to relax with a glass of something chilled and watch the sun sink towards the Cornish horizon: the end of another magical day in your kingdom.

Standing out from the crowd is Sheepfold, an architect designed holiday home on the Cornish north coast that sleeps eight. It’s eco-friendly, spacious and set in a tiny hamlet just inland from the beaches of Bedruthan Steps, Mawgan Porth and Porthcothan, with a generous garden displaying beautiful views over rolling farmland to the sea. Sheepfold’s open-plan living spaces are flooded with natural light, with the dining and kitchen areas connecting seamlessly for an easygoing holiday lifestyle. The building is super-insulated, making it very cosy at all times of the year. The property features design details like hand-turned door handles, subtle textures and colours as well as cleverly up-cycled furniture which, combined with the clever technology that makes the beautifully appointed bathrooms highly efficient, makes this an incredibly eco-friendly property. Alongside is a second property, sleeping four. This will also be available as a holiday home later in 2016 and the two can be booked separately or together, sleeping a combined total of 12. Another gem from Forever Cornwall, set amid miles of rolling sand dunes, is Surf Six, a show stopping beach house at Gwithian Towans, St Ives Bay. Brilliantly designed to accommodate up to ten people, with a cluster of bedrooms and bathrooms at each end of the building, the vibe here is easy going surf-chic – colourful and practical. West-facing sun doors in the large, open plan living space make the best possible use of light, which streams in throughout the year. The stunning kitchen is designed with handmade units, with a generous dining area to match. The bedrooms are delightfully furnished and more than comfortable and the bathrooms are exquisitely tiled from floor to ceiling. Fully detached, Surf Six stands alone in its own large, private garden, which surrounds the beach house on all sides. With miles of beach on the doorstep, enticing surf, beguiling rock pools, coastal walks and trendy cafes to hand, Surf Six is the perfect seaside holiday home.

The Watch House features impressive floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides providing breath-taking 180° views across the harbour. Watch as the boats
drift back and forth, or gaze across the bay towards St Mawes. Watching the sunlight sparkle on the water, or the gulls circling overhead, is the perfect way to relax. The stunning contemporary kitchen contains all the mod cons you could possibly need, while the upsidedown layout makes the most of those incredible views. The wonderful balcony is ideal for relaxing with a cool, refreshing drink, watching life come and go, and for dining al fresco. The master en-suite bedroom features a luxurious super king-size double bed, again with an outstanding river vista. In the town centre you’ll find both quirky independent boutiques and your favourite high street chains. Bakeries, pubs, cafes and chic restaurants cater for all your culinary needs. Why not catch the ferry to St Mawes from the quay outside the door? Boat trips run frequently up the river and through the Carrick Roads to Truro, Flushing and also the Helford, to discover more of this beautiful area. 01326 567344 www.falmouthholidayhomes.co.uk

C
ornwall is often the destination of choice for UK holiday goers looking to escape the hustle and bustle, in search of that little slice of paradise. And it’s not hard to see why. But what do you do if you already live in Cornwall? The answer is simple – you head to the Isles of Scilly! My wife and I decided to do just that this spring. Scilly has all the qualities beloved of Cornwall, while carrying a rugged charm and unique identity entirely of its own. Having visited both Bryher and Tresco in recent years – and fallen in love on each occasion – we felt it was time to get to know St Martin’s. And what a decision that turned out to be! Combining the best bits of the other islands, St Martin’s is simply paradise found: hills, small woodlands, moorland, dramatic cliffs, long powdery white sand beaches, translucent turquoise seas and views that will take your breath away, leaving you standing there with your jaw on the floor. We have found our favourite island; a paradise just 28 miles from the Cornish coast, with a demanding travel time of 15 minutes! Arrival on the small jetty saw a welcome by three of the team from our hotel, Karma St Martin’s, who efficiently unloaded our luggage into the small van and drove it the 50 yards to the front door! Scott was
charming and welcoming – it felt as though we floated through the reception area to a soft brown leather armchair, welcomecocktail and a personal concierge’s guide to the hotel, dinner, breakfast and the island. To be honest, I didn’t hear a word as we sat in awe of the view. Once we had finished our drink Scott re-appeared as if by magic to show us to our room – attentive, but no pressure. The room was immaculate with intricate Balinese wallpapers selected by designer Tina Driscoll. Karma Group’s business started in Bali and India and is spreading to Europe with plans of luxury resorts to come. Our superior ocean view room was perfect – modern, comfortable and with every luxury you could hope for. My wife’s excitement at the mesmerising vista from the window said it all! With very few cars on the island, St Martin’s really is a world away from the mainland – a true idyll to escape it all. We timed our visit to coincide with the Walk Scilly Festival, making the most of the rare opportunity to get closer to nature and to ourselves. The festival is held every year in April, followed by a Walk Scilly Weekend in October. We enjoyed an enlightening foraging walk with expert Rachel Lambert, later being treated to a gourmet foraging

Lifestyle dinner, back at the hotel. The rock samphire tempura served with gorse flower relish was divine! Check out Rachel’s book, Wild Food Foraging in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, for some fantastic ideas. Walking around St Martin’s is a real treat, whichever direction you choose to take – it’s just about big enough to lose yourself for the day but not big enough to get lost. We found plenty to explore over a few days on the island, meandering round the paths and trails to discover view after view after view. You can’t visit the island without making the trek to the iconic daymark erected north east of St Martin’s in 1683 by Thomas Ekins – it’s an awe-inspiring walk, with 360-degree views across Chapel Down. No countryside walk is complete without a pit stop in a proper traditional pub. Thankfully, we were lucky enough to stumble upon the Seven Stones Inn, a lovely stone building offering a good pint and quite possibly the best view from a pub garden anywhere in the UK. It was also a delight to meet Fay Page in her studio and workshop. Fay makes amazing silver charms and jewellery all inspired by the islands – worth a visit just to hear the tale of the whale on the beach and to see the subsequent charm she produced. On our travels, we also passed Churchtown Farm, home to Scilly Flowers – an inspiring industry now sending 90,000 bunches of flowers to Cornwall, the UK and beyond. Call
in to meet the friendly team and send a ‘wish you were here’ gift home (they will wish they were there when they see your photos!). Of course, after each day exploring, you want nothing more than to retreat to the perfect sanctuary. With so much having made an impression on our minds, the bar had been set very high. Fortunately Karma St Martin’s exceeded every expectation. It’s the little touches that make the difference. Every guest is given a ‘wine card’ with £100 credit (billed to the room if used), allowing you to sample top wines from the cabinet, before choosing a whole bottle – an inspired idea, and the Pomerol gets my vote! Then there’s the record player linked to the Sonos system in the wine lounge, where

you can pick from the hotel’s owner John Spence’s personal vinyl collection. And, if you’re here for some rest and recuperation, then a treatment in the luxury spa will do just the trick. The hotel’s restaurant is the perfect spot to watch the sun go down, but it wasn’t just the view that impressed. A chef once told me that you can judge any restaurant based on whether they are brave enough to offer crème brulee on the menu. Well, Karma St Martin’s certainly rose to the challenge – the consistency, presentation, taste, enjoyment and pure indulgence of the dessert was symbolic of every single aspect of the experience on offer at Karma St Martin’s. It’s something that Ashley, the General Manager, and his young and delightful team are working hard to maintain and improve across the board. Obviously improving on perfection is very hard to do, but I think they might just do it. If you happen to be planning a wedding, I’m hard pressed to think of a more sublime location; the Honeymoon Suite, Tean Conference Suite, and the beach below make
the perfect trio for your big day – see our upcoming Romantic Scilly feature for the full review. Karma St Martin’s is a truly fantastic hotel – it exudes luxury, style and elegance all within the most spectacular of settings. It really needs to be visited to be believed – it is a little corner of heaven on the water's edge. Another favourite was Dibble and Grub on Porthcressa beach, St Mary’s. Here we savoured the last taste of paradise sat with a glass of sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio, a salad, wrap or sandwich (I love the lamb souvlaki in pitta), watching the sea and wishing we could stay forever. Inevitably, all good things must come to an end, and with heavy hearts but lighter feet, it was time to head home. Words really don’t do justice to the majesty of Scilly – it has to be experienced. Upon arrival, you feel all your stresses and strains quickly melting away quicker than the ice cubes in your freshly prepared cocktail. Our biggest conundrum now is finding time to plan our next visit!

The Lost Gardens of Heligan: 200 acres of history, mystery, intrigue and romance.
T
wenty-five years ago, Heligan’s historic gardens were unknown and unseen, lost under a tangle of weeds. It was only the chance discovery of a door in the ruins that led to the restoration of this once great estate. Today, the Lost Gardens have been put back where they belong: in pride of place among the finest gardens in Britain. Throughout the year, The Lost Gardens have a jam-packed schedule of events and captivating stories to enthral and entice their inter-generational audience, with this summer positively bursting at the seams! Heligan is home to the finest productive garden in Britain and is intensively cultivated throughout the year. The gardens and estate once met almost all the needs of the Tremayne family and their guests; with only fresh fish being sourced from the local harbour of Mevagissey. Today, over 300 varieties of mostly heritage fruit, vegetables and herbs are lovingly tended to supply the Heligan Kitchen with fresh, seasonal produce. Whilst most people talk in ‘food miles’, Heligan pride themselves in ‘food yards’, 157 yards from soil to plate to be exact; it doesn’t get much fresher than that!
June kicks off with a breath-taking explosion of colour, as The Lost Gardens of Heligan welcome back their mesmerising Field of Remembrance, taking the form of a boundless sea of delicate blood red, poppies. The spectacle was created on the Estate’s West Lawn, as a beacon to remind us of all those lost in the Great War and is set to bloom each summer until 2018, in line with the WWI centenary. It truly is a sight like no other and is one not to be missed. To complement this floral extravaganza a stunning display of indigo linseed flower will be in bloom in the adjacent Valentines Field, which is set to grace the senses throughout July and August, promising to be a real feast for the eyes, as well as celebrating one of Britain’s ‘lost’ crops. This June, Father’s Day is set to have more steam, beer and barbeque food than ever before with two jam-packed days instead of one. June also sees Heligan welcoming back Cornwall’s Miracle Theatre with a reputation for producing fresh and truthful adaptions, guaranteeing inspiring entertainment that can be enjoyed by all. The audience is invited to bring a picnic, share a glass of wine and sit back and enjoy the show in the magical atmosphere of

the Lost Gardens, set against the stunning backdrop of ancient rhododendrons. Following the theatre theme, this summer will see the irrepressible Kneehigh Theatre return to The Lost Gardens for their third consecutive year, with their award-winning, spirit-lifting nomadic theatre space, the Asylum. They bring with them a chance for friends old and new to enjoy world-class theatre, delicious food and drink, live music and a good old-fashioned Kneehigh knees-up. Kneehigh bring you not one, not two but three exciting new shows; The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk, FUP and The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Entry to the gardens is free for Kneehigh show ticket holders from 6pm on performance nights, but should you wish to spend longer exploring, combined tickets are available allowing you to enjoy the 200 acres at your leisure. The Lost Summer once again runs for the duration of the summer holidays and encapsulates the essence of our childhood memories and our parents’ before us. This summer The Lost Gardens brings memories of old into the moment, with a summer of outdoor play, den building, bushcraft, trails through magical woodlands, toasting marshmallows around smouldering campfires and wild adventures out and about in the great British outdoors.
There have been numerous changes throughout Heligan over the past year and a few projects due to be completed, such as the reopening of The Ravine, set for July. Here the old watercourses have been re-established, returning the sound of running water to the Northern Gardens. New plantings along the rocky landscape are set to provide a real summer spectacle. The Jungle and The Lost Valley have been connected for the first time in Heligan’s history and linked with a new boardwalk, taking you through a wealth of new and exotic plantings. Gardeners’ Question Time will be a new feature this summer and is a unique opportunity to get your gardening questions answered by the Heligan Gardening Team. The team welcome gardening enthusiasts of all abilities to join them in the historic Melon Yard, for an informal and fun Q&A session with gardeners from both the Productive and Ornamental Gardening Teams.

Wedding
Your day, your way Whether you’re dreaming of an intimate ceremony or an exclusive party by the sea, Fowey Hall is a glorious wedding venue.
C
ornwall is a magical place to get married. A luxury retreat overlooking the Fowey Estuary, Fowey Hall can be your exclusive country house where your wedding is exactly how you dreamt it would be. Originally built as a beautiful Victorian mansion by local resident Charles Augustin Hanson, today Fowey Hall retains the unique charm and relaxed atmosphere of a country house, complete with library, morning, drawing, billiard and dining rooms. As a wedding venue, the majestic Fowey Hall becomes exclusively yours, welcoming between 60 and 120 guests. Fowey Hall provides its guests with a totally flexible venue with the utmost privacy, giving you a unique wedding that reflects your personality; it’s all about you and your guests! The hotel has 36 individually styled rooms, a spa complete
with pool and outdoor hot tub, extensive grounds with beautiful views over the Fowey river estuary, and Ofsted registered creche as well as an older chilrens’ games room stocked with toys and much more. Fowey Hall has a number of impressive and characterful rooms licensed for ceremonies. From the spectacular Drawing Room to the gorgeous Garden Room, there is the perfect setting to suit your guest list. The reception can be tailored to exactly how you’d like it to be; the Fowey Hall team take a personal approach, offering anything from Pimm’s on the sunny croquet lawn to sparklers on the veranda as evening falls or, during the colder months, roaring log fires to gather around. The enchanting, sloping and luscious lawns are a wonderful place to take photographs of your day, against a backdrop of grand architecture or the estuary melting into endless sea below.

ì ABOVE Fowey Hall makes the perfect backdrop for your wedding day
When it comes to the eating part of the day, Cornwall is renowned for its fresh and fantastic produce all year round. James Parkinson, the Head Chef at Fowey Hall, has a wealth of knowledge and an abundance of delicious and seasonal ingredients to hand – literally, herbs are grown in the hotel’s garden. James will meet with you to discuss and customise a creative and sumptuous wedding menu to suit your style and taste. All that’s left for you to do is relax and unwind over canapés and locally sourced dishes cooked to perfection. It’s believed that Fowey Hall inspired Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows; Kenneth Grahame was a frequent visitor
to the former family mansion. Testament to this, today the hotel is a realm of imagination, fun and games. The Four Bears Den is the hotel’s Ofsted registered crèche; here children can play with toys and take part in arts and crafts, face painting and much more. There is a Cinema Room too for older children to watch the latest movies and a Blue Room to relax with friends. There is an outdoor hot tub with uninterrupted sea views and, for children, a pool for splashing and swimming. The weddings team at Fowey Hall is intent on creating a bespoke package for you: a wedding that is unique, suits your individual requirements and reflects your personality! If luxurious and grand rooms, sweeping estuary and sea views, extensive grounds and fine food and wine is what you have in mind for the big day, Fowey Hall is where your wedding dreams become a reality.
“The relaxed pace of life, endless vistas, grand architecture and first class quality of food and drink amount to a relaxed day that, after much planning, is harmonious to the ideal held in your mind”

Station
to station We drop by The Lizard Lifeboat Station to discover more about the inspiring work of the RNLI.
A
rriving at The Lizard Lifeboat Station is like stumbling upon a top-secret base from Thunderbirds – in every sense. We’re privileged to climb into a small metal cage hugging the sheer cliff face and slowly descend 50 metres or so, to reach the ultra-high-tech, waveshaped building, cleverly concealed in the natural rocky Kilcobben cove below. Entering the building does nothing to dampen this feeling. Taking centre stage is a 31-ton, £2.7 million, state-of-the-art vessel, flanked by a veranda set over three levels, with uniformed personnel occasionally scurrying into various side rooms. The station’s huge metal doors open wide onto the waves below, framing a matchless view across the Channel and Celtic Sea. The imposing, self-righting, all-weather Tamar Class lifeboat sits poised on a purpose-built pneumatic pivot, waiting for the signal; ready to slide down the slipway into the depths below. The station’s very existence, in this remote, tricky-to-access location, is a testament to human endeavour. From the fundraising, to the design and build, right through to its operation – almost everything about it represents a huge feat of engineering, from the large scale, down to the tiniest detail. We’re here on a sublime Tuesday evening to witness its launch for a routine training exercise. Lifeboat Operations Manager Ned Nuzum greets us warmly, introducing us to Coxswain, Andrew Putt; Chairman, Dr Chris Cuff, and resident photographer Geoff Squibb. As he shows us around, Chris speaks with pride of the station and crew. “The kit has to be right – no corner cutting”, he says. “If we’re sending crews out to sea, often in challenging conditions, we need to provide them with the best kit possible.” The new station is the latest in a long line to have operated out of The Lizard over the years. Lifeboats of the peninsula still hold the RNLI’s record for the largest number of people rescued in a single operation. In March 1907, Lifeboat crews from Cadgwith, Coverack, Porthleven and The Lizard rowed out for a staggering 16-hours straight to rescue 456 of the passengers and crew aboard

the liner SS Suevic, having foundered on the rocks, close to Lizard Point. Both Chris and Ned are keen to emphasise that they don’t operate in isolation, highlighting the wider role of the RNLI. It’s just one of 237 lifeboat stations across the UK, and the 15 across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, all working tirelessly to keep our shores safe. And then there are the 200 or more RNLI lifeguarded beaches too. Being a charity, the RNLI relies critically on donations and the generosity of others, with fundraising playing an integral role. Neighbouring station Penlee, for example, is currently carrying out an appeal for funds towards the building of a new lifeboat station, updating the facilities and creating a visitor centre to highlight Penlee’s rich heritage. You can help by visiting: www.rnli-penleelifeboat.org.uk/appeal While traditionally crews have been made up largely of fishermen, these days the recruitment pool is surprisingly diverse, as Chris explains. “The RNLI is a ‘broad church’ organisation, encompassing members from all walks of life.” The flipside, however, is that new volunteers don’t necessarily have existing maritime experience to draw upon, necessitating intense training programmes and first-class facilities. The Lizard’s Coxswain, Andrew Putt, who has been with the RNLI for 31 years, explains the qualities needed in volunteers: “Commitment without recognition; someone who’s keen to get up in the middle of the night to go to the aid of others.” It’s an inclusive spirit – whether man or woman,
young or old, provided you can meet the challenging physical and emotional demands, you can step aboard. The Lizard needs seven crew afloat and six shore crew, in order to successfully launch, drawing on a rotation of around 37 operational volunteers. It’s an incredible sight watching the boat slide down into the water, each crew member well-drilled in their respective roles. Naturally, keeping up competency is essential – crew have to complete at least one exercise per month to ensure the entire roster is fully skilled, regardless of who is called upon on any given day. But there are so many ways to make a difference, other than those at the sharp edge. As Ned emphasises, “If you want to volunteer in any capacity, whether boat crew, shore crew, boathouse guide and more, the opportunity is there to get involved.” Of course, there’s another, very simple way in which we can all help: stay smart, respect the water, avoid needlessly dangerous situations, swim only on lifeguarded beaches, and follow the RNLI’s safety tips on their website. Our visit to the station is a small reminder of the wonderful work carried out by the RNLI, the resolve of those involved, and how important it is for us all to get behind this indispensable national institution. Keep up the good work!

Saving lives Now in its third year, the RNLI’s national drowning prevention campaign, Respect the Water, aims to halve accidental coastal deaths by 2024 in the UK and Republic of Ireland. The campaign focuses on the dangerous unpredictability of the sea, highlighting dangers which get many people into trouble including cold water shock, powerful rip currents and slip, trips and falls near the coast. Visit RNLI.org/ respectthewater to find info on how to stay safe. The charity also aims to implement effective drowning prevention strategies in the highest risk areas internationally, through influence, education, rescue and supervision.

hether you’re off on holiday in an exotic location or plan to enjoy the sun at home on staycation, it’s that time of year when fashion really comes into its own. So, we catch up with Sharon Smith and Katie Robinson, the mother-daughter team behind Truro womenswear boutique Bishop Phillpott, who talk us through some of the key trends for the holiday season. Jumpsuits An outfit in one, we just love the ease of a jumpsuit. “They’re a great way to save space when packing to go away as they can be dressed up or down with ease”, says Katie. “This season we have a whole selection of jumpsuits, whether that be a jersey piece from Weekend by MaxMara, a cullotte jumpsuit from American Vintage or a more structured shirt style version.” Throw them on with some statement sandals for the day or take them up a notch and add heels and glam accessories for an evening look. An update on the classic white denim We can’t live without white denim in the summer; it becomes a real wardrobe staple.
“This season sees some new updates to the classic style”, adds Sharon, “with Donna Ida jeans in a more subtle ‘milk’ shade, and JBrand with a figure flattering new shape – the cropped flare. And if you really fancy a change then take a look at our gorgeous pale pink JBrand jeans; they’re a great way to update your denim and the shade is oh-so versatile!” Tropical brights Summer is always a great excuse for adding some brightness into our wardrobe, and this season sees the return of tropical brights. Never too late to
change Many of us dream of a change of job and lifestyle, and it’s exactly what lovely, award-winning, garden designer Jo Midwinter has done.

catch up with Jo at her home overlooking the Camel estuary. If you’ve ever thought about employing a designer but always thought it might be rather intimidating then Jo’s the person for you! She is warm, easy-going and bubbling over with enthusiasm for her career and lifestyle. Conversation flows easily over mugs of tea in her colourful kitchen, her golden retriever, Harry, at our feet. Jo explains with a huge smile: “I loved gardening from an early age and enjoyed creating gardens for myself, family and
friends. I always had a strong feeling for space and shapes. The way you can create a space to make you feel more comfortable, energised or tranquil. I had also fallen in love with Cornwall – especially around Padstow. We kept coming back to Cornwall for family holidays. Little did I know that one day I would actually be working in garden design and finally living in Cornwall right next to the Camel estuary!” It wasn’t quite as simple as Jo makes it sound – there was a lot of determination involved in realising her dream. First in 2006, a move from their home in

Leamington Spa where Jo worked in IT; to live in Okehampton, when her husband was offered a job nearby. Then with her children settled and working, Jo, with a huge leap of faith, gave up work and enrolled on a garden design course at Duchy College, Rosewarne. “It was finally time to do what I had always wanted to do.” Jo says with another huge smile. “But we were still living in Okehampton – so it was quite a commitment to take on the drive to Rosewarne in north west Cornwall, let alone the added cost! But…” another grin from Jo, “life has a habit of stepping in sometimes and it turned out that two other people on the course lived nearby, so we not only shared the car journey and cost, but also became firm friends. It was a real God send!” It’s obvious that Jo thrived. In her final year at college she was joint winner of the Society of Garden Designers’ (SGD) national student of the year award. “It was wonderful!” Jo exclaims. “Just being at the awards ceremony; meeting and being in photos with designers whose work I had been studying!” Then, last year she won an SGD professional award for the garden of a contemporary coastal home in north Cornwall. I ask Jo about her philosophy on garden design. “When I approach a garden I think about how it makes you feel and how you want it to feel. I think about creating the places where it’s good to sit and reflect, places that will encourage people to spend time together, places where there is a sense
of discovery and excitement and how the garden flows between each element. I want to create a garden that will tempt my clients outside as often as possible! I like to try and find the unique character of a garden. It’s my job to raise possibilities for the garden. And I do love coastal gardens, using robust plants that can withstand whatever the weather has to throw at them. I never want to leave clients with problem plants! At the back of my mind is always… how are they going to manage this in the future?” In any spare time she has, Jo likes to go surfing, “though I’m not very good! My son surfs too and has moved from London to Newquay, so now I see them a lot, which is an added joy. I run and walk the Camel trail, and I love wildflowers so I photograph any I find, and blog about them. Oh, and we enjoy eating out, particularly in relaxed restaurants like Gilmores in Newquay for Mexican food, it’s a little shack by the golf course, or Scott and Babs at Retorrick Mill.” I can imagine strolling round my garden, buffeted by the westerlies, talking with Jo. I love her approach of simple but exciting; of making spaces that will add to people’s lives, and her warmth and enthusiasm for the life she has made.

Top 5 garden design tips • Make the most of what you have! – List the things you do and don't like in your garden.
• Use of space is the most important thing to get right. - Plan space for the elements you wish to include (e.g. dining, playing, growing veg) and the routes in between. • Create a mood board – A clearly defined idea will help with all future decisions. • Only select plants that work with your garden's microclimate and soil – Don’t fight it! • Structure is the backbone of the garden – Use hardy, reliable plants packed with all-year-round form to give your garden shape throughout the year.

Got to visit...
THE MUSEUM OF WITCHCRAFT AND MAGIC The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic (MWM) in the picturesque village of Boscastle contains the world’s largest collection of magical and witchcraft-related objects and books. The two floors of exhibition spaces contain a wide variety of objects and artworks, from curses to crystal balls, potions to Pagan beliefs. MWM attracts over 30,000 visitors a year and is a Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence Winner. There is a special focus on West Country beliefs and traditions, so go and discover how fishermen ‘bought the wind’ and where you can find sacred sites in this beautiful part of Cornwall. Alongside the fascinating permanent collection is a temporary exhibition space that explores different aspects of magic and witchcraft, ensuring that there’s always something new to see. This year there is an exhibition on the history of Halloween. There are also regular guided tours and a lively programme of talks. The library can also be visited by appointment. Check the website for further details.

Festival spirit With festival season about to kick off, Amanda Winwood gives some tips on roughing it in style.
Honey is sweet in more ways than one! Enjoy this great hair treat whilst you relax in a post festival bath! To use: Take two tablespoons of runny honey and mix in one tablespoon of egg yolk and one tablespoon of organic olive oil. Massage into clean, damp hair. Leave for 20 minutes then rinse with warm water. The protein in the egg yolk will help replenish the keratin protein bonds that UV rays attack. Natural glossy hair!

Escape the city
We love using natural and organic ingredients. You may think that eggs, honey, avocadoes, lemon and yoghurt are great for a nutritious meal but they are all fantastic and affordable hair treatment ingredients. Oils in avocados closely resemble that natural oil mentioned earlier. The mild acidity in lemon will gently remove grease from hair.
Hugs from Amanda x
Amanda is well known in the health and wellbeing industy for her organic range ‘Spiezia’ and also as founder of the Made For Life Foundation, working with people recovering from cancer. www.spieziaorganics.com

Summer is the time to escape the city and enjoy festival season
• If you have longer hair then a plait or braid is always the answer. Tendrils of hair trailing out of a plait or braid are fine too. • If you have naturally curly hair – congratulations as ‘crimping’ is the biggest 2016 trend. That curly hair is perfect for festivals.
• Hair adornments are great – glitter, hair tattoos, hair jewellery, headscarves and, of course, flowers are all great as well as hats. • Remember this is your time to create your own festival style!
AM
Home hair spa treat
t’s that time of year again, and there’s a huge and growing interest in festivals within the UK. We are off to Glastonbury with the family in June where we’ll be joining Tony and Shelley Sampson and crew in Cornwall Solar Panels Pyramid Palace – I can’t wait! Cornwall has its own brilliant array of festivals too. Festivals are a time to let your hair down, relax and have fun. But in actual fact with limited access to water you have the perfect opportunity to try out some great festival hairstyles. It’s worth being aware that the scalp, when left to its own natural devices, will return to its own natural balance, producing just enough oil to keep your hair glossy and smooth. The natural sebum produced by the scalp ensures that the shaft of the hair is clean and protected.
