Welcome to our special Bath & Bristol edition, as usual brimming with a whole host of fabulous ideas for the home, unforgettable days out and top foodie destinations. Here at Cornwall Living, it’s our favourite time of year... not only are the evenings getting brighter and warmer, with an array of flowers in bloom, it’s also the perfect time to spot some of Cornwall’s wonderful wildlife, both on and off the coast. In the last week alone, there have been sightings of a pair of basking sharks and a magnificent humpback whale in Falmouth bay. Surely, that’s enough to tempt you down here, alone – you’re not likely to spot these beautiful creatures from your average city window! If you are thinking of making the move, we suggest a range of beautiful north Cornwall homes in highly sought-after locations, including Port Isaac, Rock, Daymer Bay and Polzeath (page 18). Our selection includes those both currently and soon to be on the market with John Bray, and we consider the benefits of buying a property off the open market. Cornwall has a reputation for being a creative hub, whether it’s food, theatre, art or music. Festival season has started so we take a peek at The Wyldes festival in north Cornwall (page 68), and Rock Oyster Festival near the Camel Trail (page 11). Dan has a look at the culture of pop-ups in our opening feature (page 16). These days pop-ups include everything from spas to theatre, gin bars to bubbly, and, of course, a plethora of exciting food. We preview some fantastic holiday Padstow breaks with Rick Stein (page 60), and speak to the award-winning head chef at Truro’s The Rising Sun (page 59). I catch up with the charming designer Tom Raffield, known to many for his delightfully quirky steam-bent, wooden-clad house, as featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs (page 70). Finally, there’s plenty of news, advice, art, holiday ideas and so much more in this issue of Cornwall Living. So get comfy, pour a glass of something cold and enjoy!

Celebrate the reopening of Tate St Ives by visiting the incredible new exhibits Tate St Ives is an iconic art gallery situated on the edge of the glorious Porthmeor beach. The gallery is celebrating reopening by holding two exhibitions about the ceramics studio, the ocean and the landscape. The first exhibition is entitled ‘That Continuous Thing’ and looks at 100 years of the ceramics studio, a place where tradition meets experimentation. The exhibition brings together over 100 works by 50 artists, from Europe, Japan and North America. The show begins with the 1910s and 1920s, through the Californian ‘clay revolution’ of the 1950s and 1960s and ends with the playful ceramics of contemporary artists. The second exhibition follows the work of Jessica Warboys. Huge paintings made by the sea fill the gallery with colour as she explores memories about art history, mythology and landscape, using sculpture, painting, film and performance. The Studio and the Sea exhibition is open daily from 10am until 5.20pm and will run until 3rd September 2017. For more information visit www.tate.org.uk/stives

The renaissance of Rosewarne House Spectacular furnishings and great works of art really come into their own in rooms of great proportions, creating the backdrop for excellent dining and fascinating conversation. Owning one of the grand apartments at Holman Park, where the Grade II Listed Regency property Rosewarne House has been lovingly restored over the last five years by Price Properties Ltd (a family firm headed by Elizabeth Price), will indeed give you this exquisite lifestyle. Located in the heart of Cornwall, yet only a couple of miles from sandy beaches and bike mining trails

from Portreath to Devoran, this six-acre historic park is an oasis of fauna and flora, just minutes by foot from a full choice of shops and bars in the emerging town of Camborne. Whilst tourism is one of Cornwall’s greatest assets, so too are the forgotten countryside towns, which in the early 1800s had greater status than those on the coastline. For a taste of true Greek revival architecture and illustrious living, take a tour of this majestic house as it becomes something truly special. Ten years of Coastal Home have drifted in on the tide 2017 is an exciting year for Coastal Home. Not only has the team finally relocated to the wild and woolly north Cornwall coast, but they are celebrating their ten year anniversary to boot. What started with one computer and a living room full of products, has, ten years and a lot of cups of tea and elbow grease later, evolved into an established and well-respected website selling a range of beautiful coastal homewares, décor and gifts around the world. The products Coastal Home sell are inspired by a sea-loving lifestyle; handcrafted driftwood boats, moon and tide clocks, hand-carved wooden birds, Shirley Vauvelle art, glassware, textiles, mirrors and prints, all of which are chosen carefully to represent the best of coastal living. Coastal Home is expanding the range this year, with a special focus on exquisite items made here in Cornwall, many by talented friends of the company, and the team can’t wait to share these undiscovered fruits of the county. Tornado tickets expected to steam away for this summer’s visit to Cornish Heritage railway Bodmin & Wenford Railway are putting the finishing touches to plans for the upcoming visit by iconic steam locomotive 60163 Tornado from 1st to 4th June. Tornado is the first and only steam locomotive to be built in Britain this century and the first main line steam locomotive to be built in Britain since 1960 when British Railways ceased construction of steam engines. It recently attracted the interest of the national media when the engine reached recordbreaking speeds of 100mph, and earlier in the year when it hauled passenger trains for the re-opening of the Settle and Carlisle line, where the public flocked in their hundreds to be part of the spectacle. The visit makes history for the engine and Railway, although the speed of travel will be more leisurely through the Cornish countryside!

The event marks Tornado’s first visit to Cornwall where it will be the biggest ever steam locomotive to run on the Bodmin line, Cornwall’s only full size railway still operated by steam locomotives. The Railway will also be showcasing some of its own fleet of heritage engines on proud static display, creating a unique opportunity to see 60163 Tornado, the newest and largest British locomotive alongside the smallest (Judy, from Port of Par) and the oldest express passenger locomotive (National Railway Museum’s T9). Tickets include a vintage shuttle bus from the event parking, so the experience starts in style! On arrival at Bodmin General, a charming 1950s Cornish branch line station, there’ll be chance to browse the

exhibition marquee featuring a selection of the finest local and locomotive makers, producers, suppliers and organisations. Cornish cream teas are available to pre-order to enjoy aboard, and after the trip behind Tornado travellers will have time on the platform for photographs and film with the iconic locomotive. Chris Hatton, Railway Manager said: “We’re very proud to be bringing Tornado to Bodmin, and that it’s already generated so much interest. It’s a great opportunity to introduce people to the excitement and nostalgia of steam travel.” Tickets are selling well. Options range from standard travel to First Class, bookable private compartments and a First Class evening dining train on Saturday 3rd June.

Looking for the perfect family beach holiday? Owners Steve and Lizzie, upon purchasing the Grosvenor in 2015, immediately went to work on a top-to-bottom facelift, lovingly restoring the Victorian building’s original features, such as the beautifully tiled hallway. As you head upstairs, however, things take a turn for the modern, from the sparkling new en-suites to the supremely comfortable Hypnos beds. The Grosvenor, while oozing contemporary comfort, is family run and family friendly. Steve and Lizzie’s five year-old son, Jimi, loves to make friends and the guesthouse’s prime location overlooking Summerleaze bay is perfect for just that, making it ideal for families as well as for surfers, with ample storage on site for wetsuits and boards. What’s more, the team champions local produce, from meat and eggs sourced from local farms and butchers, to locally brewed tipples from Firebrand, Bude Brewery and Art Brew, all available in the cosy, well-stocked bar. So, if you’re looking for the perfect bucket and spade family holiday, why not get in touch with the team at The Grosvenor, Bude?

North Cornwall’s Rock Oyster Festival finds new home for 2017

Nestled on the rugged north coast of Cornwall in the picturesque village of Boscastle, Swedish designer and jewellery-smith Carin Lindberg creates incredible pieces of jewellery for the quietly confident woman who desires well-made, contemporary yet timeless jewellery that celebrates simplicity and elegance. Each piece plays with inspiration from the incredible Cornish landscape and as such embraces asymmetry, contrast and imperfections, which is then combined with Scandinavian simplicity.

Moving to a new home on the Camel estuary this summer, Rock Oyster Festival is set to become one of the few festivals that can be easily accessed by foot or bike, thanks to the nearby Camel Trail. To encourage this eco-friendly option, the organisers are promising to donate £1 to a local charity for every bike ridden to the event! This music and performing arts festival, which takes place on Thursday 8th and Friday 9th July, offers a full programme of fantastic family entertainment and non-stop music from three stages, all complemented by stunning views over the Camel estuary and beyond. Advance Weekend Tickets are available now for just £38 per adult and £24 for teens. Under 12s go free and weekend tickets even include free camping! For a chance to win a family ticket worth £115, visit www.cornwall-living.co.uk/competition

Carin combines organic materials such as beach pebbles with unexpected precious materials such as diamonds, sapphires and various gemstones and pearls. Indeed, her bestselling Pebble collection features pebbles from local beaches that are then combined with silver, other gemstones and pearls. You can browse these beautiful collections on her website or you can commission a bespoke, one-of-akind piece that is completely tailored to you.

Enjoy a creative escape in St Ives In a world where much of our innate creativity remains untapped, many of us feel that we have an artistic side that’s worth exploring. If this sounds like you, how about a few days spent in one of the UK’s most picturesque coastal villages, breathing sea air with the sand between your toes; exploring your creativity on a short art course designed to focus your mind, relax your body and challenge your sense of self? St Ives School of Painting’s selection of courses offers quality tuition from experienced artists, in spacious studios overlooking Porthmeor beach. Ideal for complete beginners or intermediate artists and including all the necessary materials, you can book one of these by yourself, with a partner; even with that far-flung group of childhood friends you’ve been meaning to catch up with. Weekend course participant, Dorothy Hicks, says: “As a complete beginner I had not expected to learn and progress as much as I did in three days. The space and facilities are amazing and the location is exceptional!” To find out more or to book your class, call 01736 797180, visit www.schoolofpainting.co.uk or email info@schoolofpainting.co.uk

ith summer just around the corner, now’s the time to consider how to make the most out of Cornwall in the sun, a question that’s relevant to both out-and-about weekenders as well as small, local businesses. There is one solution – a concept that, over last few years, has taken the nation by storm: pop-ups! But what is a pop-up? In basic terms, a pop-up venture is one that can, quite literally, pop up anywhere. In Cornwall, the unique geography means you can find them in the most unusual and astounding locations, from the sands of the north coast to the clifftops of the south and anywhere in between. Interestingly, while popups are by no means a new concept, there’s a common misconception that they’re limited to

foodie stalls and bars. On the contrary, being without the same restrictions as high street stores, commercial pop-ups appear wherever the crowds are and naturally, the more that emerge along our coastline, the more intense the competition becomes. In order to succeed, new ventures need to offer something different, something that sets them apart from the crowd and it’s this, I think, that makes them so exciting! You’ll already have seen some of the converted vans, horse boxes and shipping containers dotted around the coast, but it goes deeper than that: pop-ups are beginning to change the face of the high street itself, particularly where there’s empty shop space in need of filling.

Legal stumbling blocks such as paperwork and unaffordable overheads can put off even the most enthusiastic venture. So, when I spoke with Helen Willett of Coodes Solicitors, Penzance, I was pleased to learn that, by working closely with PUPz and Penzance Business Improvement District, she’d been able to find a solution. “There was a need for a difference to be established between what defines commercial and community pop-ups.” Helen explained how she drafted a new, comparatively shortened document that both satisfies uneasy landlords and makes things easier for tenants, a huge step for Penzance!

Just look at Pop Up Penzance (PUPz). I recently caught up with PUPz co-founders, Maria and Rachel who, being incredibly passionate about what they do, explained how they like to take empty shops and create opportunities for others to utilise the space; improving the appearance of the high street by doing away with boarded doors and windows. “Our aim is to bring footfall into the town centre by creating a variety of happenings and to offer opportunities to others to engage the public on the high street.” Working alongside the local community, they’ve been involved in a number of projects to this effect, including The Pop Up Tate. Launched in collaboration with Tate St Ives and artist Emma Saffy-Wilson, the aim was simple – to put art-making opportunities under the noses of Penzance’s youth by transforming an unused space into a hub of activity and within days, artistic young locals had taken positive ownership of it. Impressively, PUPz also involves itself in commercial ventures, recognising the importance of being able to ‘dip a toe’ before plunging in headfirst. Mousehole Fish, for instance, having initially ran a four-week pop-up trial is still open, four years later! As you might expect, the work that Rachel, Maria and co. do must inevitably encounter obstacles.

Foodie and Theatre é ABOVE The Miracle Theatre cast set against a dusky Atlantic

ê BELOW Theatre is all the more dramatic in an authentic, outdoor setting

Pop-up theatre is becoming ever more popular and it’s easy to see why. A high-calibre performance is one thing, but add to it the dramatic setting of a woodland or clifftop and it becomes suspended in half-reality, gaining a sense of authenticity that’s impossible to achieve indoors. I spoke with Annie Ukleja, Managing Director at Miracle Theatre, who told me: “We love the fact that we can turn up in the middle of nowhere and transform a field, garden or clifftop into a wonderful theatre venue. We just pull up in our big pink van, set up the stage, set and sound system and we’re ready to go!” According to Annie, even the changeable Cornish weather doesn’t put them off, explaining that: “Whatever Mother Nature contributes on the night will inevitably lead to a one off combination, meaning no show is ever the same!” A great spot for enjoying the thrills and spills of outdoor theatre is Carlyon beach, near St Austell. Enjoying its own devoted hard-stand area, Carlyon sets the bar when it comes to things that pop-up and throughout the summer, visitors can expect a fantastic programme of events which, in the past, have included pop-up performances from Rogue theatre, the popular Skyscape cinema on the beach as well as fantastic foodie banquets – dinner and a show!

Taking pride of place at Carlyon, last year, was Ostraca, Fal Oyster’s pop-up Oyster Box. Built from a shipping container and fitted with a hydraulic decking and full bi-fold doors, this smartly-converted contraption is used primarily as a go-anywhere oyster bar. Impressively, it can also be used as an open lounge, a beach bar, a popup restaurant; even a live music venue, making it a fine example of what makes pop-ups so unique! For details on where you can find Ostraca this summer, visit www.faloyster.co.uk. In the name of enjoying the recent, glorious weather, my partner and I went to meet co-founders of Craftworks Street Kitchen, Mick and Danny as they readied their all-new food truck for service. Having already had huge success with the Craftworks Street Kitchen restaurant in Truro, the pair decided to seize the opportunity to put their winning formula on wheels and, if the brisket beef burritos we tried that afternoon are anything to go by, I’d say they’re definitely onto a winner! Throughout the summer, you’ll find the Craftworks truck in Wadebridge, just up from the Camel Trail next to Bike Smart. It’ll also be attending certain festivals over the warmer months, so be sure to keep an eye on the Facebook page. Indeed, festivals are a great way to enjoy the top of the pop-ups, with

Festivals Cornwall’s festival scene presenting some great opportunities for businesses looking to cater to a crowd seeking new experiences. One such company that’s happy to oblige is Kernow Springs, with its roaming Eco Spa. Company founder, Martin Dean and his family – who love going to festivals – have long-since recognised that revellers, instead of slumming it, are starting to seek a little luxury among the usual festival-frivolities. The spa, which includes plunge pools, hot tubs, saunas – you name it – is a wonderful break from the usual, grubby day-to-day of festival life. It’s also available for hire for weddings, parties and corporate events and, being a ‘roaming’ spa, the team will happily set up in almost any location, be it on the side of a lake or atop a cliff overlooking the sea. To find out more visit www.kernowsprings.co.uk. If you’d like to see the Kernow Springs team in action, head to this year’s summer Masked Ball, a fiercely popular date on the national festival calendar and a hub of popup activity. Kelvin Batt, the man behind the magic explained: “The Masked Ball has grown a great reputation, not only for throwing the best parties but also for doing things locally. I moved down when I was young and there wasn’t much going on here. Events such as the Masked Ball provide a great boost for the local economy!”

There you have it. Whether it’s a commercial venture that’s just testing the water; one that’s aimed at filling unused shop space and increasing footfall in the high street or one that continues to give back to the locals, year after year, pop-ups have so much to offer the Cornish community. And, with food and music festivals lined up throughout the summer, as well as static pop-ups just waiting to be discovered throughout the county’s most stunning locations, there’s plenty to see for anyone getting out and about. Remember, if you just keep an open mind and aren’t afraid to try something new, you’ll be amazed at what you might find.

Property POLZEATH

Surrounded by beauty

We take a look at two incredible properties that have recently become available in north Cornwall that boast a view that puts all others to shame.

T

he north Cornish coast is an absolutely sensational place to live. With a rugged and sea-weathered coastline and a rolling countryside that provides seemingly endless views, it’s a unique location in which to find your home. Two properties have recently become available in The Point at Polzeath, each boasting mesmerising views over the golf course and out to sea, with Pentire Point and Newlands Island in the distance. Apartment 6, a stunning first and secondfloor apartment, provides you with everything

you could possibly want out of your Cornish home. Large windows throughout provide an abundance of natural light, which goes hand-in-hand with the spacious living area to create a fresh and contemporary atmosphere. You can enjoy the views from the comfort of the living area, or when the Cornish sun is shining, you can head out onto the fantastic roof terrace to enjoy some al fresco dining and a glass of wine with a view. The apartment boasts three bedrooms, two of which are en-suite, and is furnished with bespoke pieces from Tom Schneider and Neville Johnson wardrobes. Trevose, the second property available in this beautiful location, is a one-bedroom apartment ready and waiting to welcome you to Cornwall. Accessed through the private courtyard that is shared between the apartments at The Point, Trevose is a hidden gem that takes full advantage of its position with the living area, making the most of the stretching views and a locked storage cupboard for the all-important surfboards. Savour the amazing scenery by opening the doors from the living area out onto the patio, the perfect way to enjoy some outside dining or entertaining friends and family. What could be better than toasting to a fantastic day on the beach whilst sat on the patio as the sun sets? Similarly, the lockable connecting door that leads to the adjacent apartment is ideal when a group is holiday letting both apartments.

Indeed, if you are planning on using the property as a holiday let then you can rest easy with the knowledge that both properties come with a proven track record in the letting industry. Of course, as amazing as the properties are, the surrounding landscape warrants a big mention. The stunning coastline can be enjoyed by an invigorating walk along the coast path or through exhilarating watersports including sailing, waterskiing, canoeing and windsurfing. Or, you can simply sit on the beach and bask in your beautiful surroundings with the bright blue sea ahead of you, the clear sky above and the impressive cliffs behind. A walk through the expansive golf course gets you to Polzeath, a popular surfing beach amongst locals and holidaymakers that offers a vast stretch of sand and safe bathing. The

facilities available at the golf course are simply fantastic and will ensure you are never stuck for something to do. Enjoy some fine dining in the restaurant, share a drink with friends in the bar, work up a sweat in the state-of-the-art gym, make the most of the indoor swimming pool or perfect your swing on the 18-hole golf course, which is also home to a private landing strip. If it’s location, location, location then these two properties are up there with the best and need to be seen to be believed. Once you wake up to a view like this, you won’t ever want to wake up to anything else.

ith dramatic cliffs topped with lush green grass, crystal clear, emerald waters and peaceful harbours that instantly bring a sense of tranquillity to the air, there is little question as to why north Cornwall’s property market is thriving. Large clifftop homes with stretching sea views are snapped up quicker than you can say “wow, what a view” and refurbished cottages with sleek, contemporary décor are as popular as the striking landscape that surrounds them. In fact, people are so keen to own a slice of the north Cornish dream that demand is far exceeding supply and you have to be very quick off the mark when a property becomes available.

The pretty coastal village of Port Isaac is a particularly popular holiday location, spectacularly situated on the rugged stretch of the north Cornwall coastline. In years gone by this historic village was a busy fishing port, and while it is still a working harbour today it is now nationally renowned for its association with the television series Doc Martin, which brings in a tremendous amount of tourism to the area. Indeed, the relatively unchanged village still boasts the narrow alleys and quaint wandering lanes, which are dotted with characterful whitewashed cottages, making it an ideal backdrop for other popular television shows such as Poldark.

é ABOVE Situated above the water, Northcliffe boasts unrivalled views of the sea and harbour

“This is indeed a rare opportunity to secure one of Port Isaac’s gems in the most stunning position”

Nestled on the south side of this picturesque and iconic harbour is a beautiful detached house, Northcliffe. Set above the harbour itself and taking in stunning views of the old village beyond and panoramic sea views, Northcliffe provides a truly idyllic home. The house enjoys many attractive features that include high ceilings, two bay windowed reception rooms, exposed timber floorboards and fireplaces. The spectacular views can be enjoyed from the majority of the rooms and from the beautiful and mature terraced garden that run down to the edge of the cliff where the boundary is fenced. This is indeed a rare opportunity to secure one of Port Isaac’s gems in the most stunning position. Immediate access to the neighbouring beach, which is dog-friendly, and within walking distance from the facilities of the village makes this incredible house ideally positioned for life on the coast. Indeed, you can enjoy the fantastic food on offer at the Michelin-starred Nathan Outlaw restaurant or sit down to real honest food served with heart at one of the excellent pubs. Northcliffe is currently divided into two substantial self-contained flats with a proven letting history; however, the property could be reconverted into a single property if you prefer a fantastically large and impressive home. The upper two stories are what is currently known as Northcliffe and are entered at street level from Roscarrock Hill. You enter into the open-plan lounge and kitchen, with a balcony

looking out to sea along the length of the house – ideal for a morning coffee with a view! Northcliffe Garden Flat is the lower storey, accessed by steps at the side of the building, and then by the terrace and front door that face the sea. It has a small lobby leading to a stone flagged kitchen and on the left of the front door is a good-sized living/dining room with extensive sea views. This incredible harbourside home, at a guide price of £950,000, is an extremely rare opportunity, but even if it weren’t, people would still be lining up to take a look, as the location is completely unique. Where else can you enjoy stretching sea views alongside one of the most stunning and recognisable villages and harbours in Cornwall?

We take a closer look at the rise in off-market property sales across north Cornwall.

K

een to snap up a piece of the north Cornwall property market without public attention, buyers are increasingly purchasing their holiday homes off-market and John Bray and Partners are experiencing a surge in just such ‘whisper sales’. The Rock based estate agency, established in 1971, is instructed to sell the majority of houses in the popular north Cornwall areas of Rock, Daymer Bay, Polzeath and Port Isaac. With a limited number of these large and prestigious beach and waterfront properties coming up for sale each year, the team

are able to offer a personal, bespoke service to both buyers and sellers with a reputation built on discretion. According to Josephine Ashby, Sales Director at John Bray & Partners: “We currently have an equal proportion of off- and on-market sales in progress. It particularly suits a high net worth market who wish to maintain high levels of privacy and confidentiality.” Parting with a property can be both emotional and stressful and not a time to have too many different faces on the case, which may explain why increasing numbers of buyers and sellers are choosing to circumvent the public arena in favour of an under-the-radar sale. Discreet and

calm, these sales progress not by high-street window adverts or online portal listings, but rather by quiet phone calls to the right people. With a comprehensive knowledge of what buyers are looking for, the team at John Bray and Partners are able to identify opportunities and marry up buyers and sellers in a modern day propertymatchmaking service. It’s a win-win for both parties with sellers usually achieving as good a price for off-market properties from buyers who are willing to act swiftly to secure their coastal haven without too much hassle. Buyers are equally able to maintain their anonymity, happy to wait for the ideal opportunity of getting something exclusive.

So how do you get in on this low-key, discreet and very British way to buy and sell a house? Contact the sales team at John Bray and Partners to register your interest.

here are many ways to make the most of the Cornish landscape and undoubtedly one of the best is to enjoy it from the balcony of a property overlooking the local vista. With this in mind, we are always on the lookout for the next great property with an unbeatable location. A favourite amongst locals, Holywell Bay is an absolutely stunning, north coast location. The well-known Gull Rocks attempt to steal the show by providing an impressive and eyecatching marker but the true feature of this Cornish haven is the expanse of golden sand nestled within a backdrop of rolling dunes and striking cliffs. With such an impressive coastal location we were excited to find out if there were any new properties that took advantage of these memorable landscapes. Luckily, local family-

The Rocks is an exciting development of ten luxury houses. Nine of the houses will have four bedrooms while the tenth will have five. Carefully designed and built to enhance the owners’ living experience, these houses offer a perfect blend of luxury living and coastal calm with clever use of clean lines and a design to complement the incredible surrounding landscape. The dining/living area boasts stylish, open-plan living, while details such as ceiling mounted speakers help create an environment ideal for entertaining. Of course, beautiful floors and attention to detail aren’t all this incredible property has to offer as the balconies overlooking the bay are a real show-stopper! Glass balustrades offer protection from the wind whilst still allowing an unobstructed view; making these balconies ideal for enjoying a Cornish summer. Just imagine spending a glorious day on the beach with

family and friends, the unspoilt rural backdrop adding a relaxed atmosphere to your fun, before returning home and extending the day on the balcony as the sun sets, giving you the ultimate backdrop. Holywell Bay is an ideal spot as it boasts a close proximity to the bustling seaside town of Newquay, perfect for shopping, surfing and fantastic restaurants, but not so close as to fill up with visitors. Indeed, whatever your chosen Cornish hobby this fantastic area has you covered. An 18-hole golf course overlooks the beach while Holywell Bay is close at hand and offers stretching sand and rolling dunes. The Camellia team are professional interior designers with particular expertise in luxury coastal properties. Indeed, under founder Elaine Skinner’s careful stewardship, the team at Camellia boasts particular skill in creating relaxed coastal environments with luxurious yet understated schemes. “This does not mean theming the property with shells and driftwood though,” explains Elaine. “It’s about

replicating the juxtaposition of texture and colour.” Indeed, they’re adept at layering up different textures to give the home a lived-in and organic feel, as though a designer had never been involved. The team are straight talking, intuitive and take pride in delivering creative solutions. Elaine adds: “Clients always say to me ‘I never thought of doing that’. I help them push a few boundaries and they trust me to see it through.” Elaine and her team are used to managing entire projects, from knocking down walls to buying cutlery. Similarly, with many clients living or working in different time zones they’re also used to scheduling work in advance and communicating progress with clients via email, Skype and conference calls. “Our clients need someone they can trust to take on their brief so that they can return to their working lives up country or abroad,” explains Elaine. “They have a clear vision, but need us to interpret it and come up with ideas to make it all a reality while working to a budget and delivery deadline. We understand their lives, their time constraints and the level of service that they expect – we always exceed!”

Boundless style We take a tour of three fabulous barn conversions, designed and styled by Iroka.

T

ucked away amidst an idyllic woodland setting is perhaps the last place I expect to come across innovative interior design, yet here we are with three classic barn exteriors hiding exceptional style within. Indeed, it is for this reason that I like to keep my ear to the ground when Iroka have undertaken the design of a property, as there is something about the meticulous execution of interior design that is eternally satisfying to see. This particular design brief was to transform the three 19th-century barns, which stood as empty shells, into three stunning selfcontained holiday retreats by focussing strongly on the internal remodelling and architectural and spacial design aspects. This was achieved with aplomb, each barn providing its own individual style, standing as a haven of relaxing elegance, perfect for a sleek woodland retreat. Through careful planning and the creation of bespoke joinery items designed by Iroka and built by a team of highly skilled craftsmen, the barns were brought to life with spacious, open-plan living throughout. In Mill Barn, a feature wall has been created to include a modern wood burner as the focal point with surrounding wood storage, which while practical also creates a striking display. Indeed, the overall look and feel gives subtle

connotations to the surrounding abundance of nature, creating a soft and warm, Nordicstyled haven. Callywith Barn features a memorable vaulted ceiling, showcasing the characterful beams above and giving a light and bright feel while the appropriately named The Snug barn boasts a contemporary yet intimate atmosphere that is perfect for a romantic getaway. Indeed, every barn highlights this fantastic blend of a classic cottage backdrop with a smart and effortlessly stylish design. The Porto wood-lined kitchen, which can be found in each barn, boasts a strong yet minimalist design with Unistone worktops to add the finishing touch to these fantastic kitchens. Made with 90 percent natural quartz, they add a beautiful and lasting addition and create a brilliant contrast to the lovely slate floors. Surrounded by nature and featuring simple yet effective style within, these barns provide a true escape from everyday life and act as a superb showcase of the talents the team at Iroka have to offer.

We catch up with fashion retailer, Ann’s Cottage, the one stop shop for all your fashion needs. words by:

Dan Warden

ith 11 stores across Cornwall, Ann’s Cottage is one of Europe’s largest retailers of surf and lifestyle clothing, as well as surf equipment ranging from wetsuits to boards and accessories. The best part is, the store’s famous loyalty card programme allows you to turn points into pounds, which can be spent either online or in any of the stores, including the clearance store in St Columb! Being part of such a fast-paced industry, the Ann’s Cottage team keep their fingers on the pulse when it comes to current trends and knowing what’s hot and what’s not. Take the annual and highly anticipated festival season, for instance. This, in many people’s eyes, is the launch of summer. Not

only this; we tend to look to our celebrity idols for the season’s latest fashion trends and with the likes of Coachella having kicked off this year’s revelling season, many people, including celebrities, travelled from all over the world, just for this incredible festival at Indio, California. Known as America’s largest festival, showcasing the most popular and established artists, ticket holders once again faced the added pressure of wearing the latest clothing and accessories. Indeed, many of us look to the stars to inspire our own wardrobes and the Ann’s Cottage team appreciate this, especially with Cornish festivals such as Boardmasters and Tunes in the Dunes drawing fashion-minded revellers from all over the world. Tie-dye, for instance, has really come back

on trend recently and, although it has for many years been somewhat clichéd – ever since its peak popularity in the 60s and 70s – some more sophisticated forms are beginning to appear in the world of fashion. Anyone keeping an eye on key fashion sites such as Vogue will know that these emergent forms have become a really popular look, especially at busy, summer festivals where it’s tough to stand out from the crowd. Look at the Rip Curl Pacha Crew, for instance. Wonderfully showcased below on the left, these jumpers are light and cool during the balmy evenings of summer and they really make a statement, too! You’ll find them at Ann’s Cottage, along with a whole range of tiedye clothing, from board shorts and t-shirts, to bikinis. And, in a world where men are

beginning to spend more time on what they wear, such trends appeal to everybody! Another dyeing technique that the team has spotted is shibori. The elaborate, striking patterns of shibori clothing are real head turners and again, they never fail to speak up in a fashion world filled with noise. Once enjoyed by the Japanese elite, this revived technique has started to make waves in the world of fashion and one of the most exciting things about it is that no shibori garment is the same. Head to the website and check out the shibori collection from Seafolly – it’s absolutely stunning! While these trends are bound to change and evolve, you can count on the Ann’s Cottage team to help you choose the look that best suits you. Choose from a massive selection of top surf and bong Image courtesy of: Billa lifestyle brands, including – but certainly not limited to – Rip Curl, Billabong, Quiksilver, Seafolly and Roxy. And it doesn’t stop at clothing – they’re experts in the world of surfing, too, so whether it’s a new wetsuit for the summer or a shorter board for the ever-improving surfers in your clan, they can help guide you through every step of your shop, matching your needs and, more importantly, your budget. To see for yourself, visit the Ann’s Cottage website or, better still, head in store! Image courte s

ith spring here and the promise of longer days spent lounging in the garden of our homes with a drink in hand, it’s time we look to our houses for a little TLC. Spring cleaning might be a time-honoured tradition but it is often all too focussed on the interiors of our lovely properties and holiday homes, leaving the outside to continue on untouched. Of course, I understand why we tend to shy away from external updates: it is infinitely easier to just rearrange some furniture and empty the kitchen cupboards than to embark on a fabulous refreshing of a house. I have therefore come up with a few top tips on changes that can be made that will help inject new life into your home and that’ll help make your spring and summer a joy! Drinks on the porch anyone? Before the hot days of summer roll around it can often be chillier than we would like in the evenings. Investing in a conservatory, sunroom or porch not only adds value to your home but also provides a mini oasis in which you can while away an evening chatting with friends or enjoying a good book in comfort and warmth while still enjoying that garden feeling.

Bedeck your home Installing some fantastic anti-slip decking gives you the chance to enjoy your garden whatever the weather. Nothing spoils a day more than excitedly preparing a delicious Sunday

breakfast to enjoy on your patio only to go flying because the rain visited the night before! Brand new, old fashion The simple act of updating your windows to a Residence 9 window will mean your house maintains its character with beautiful, traditional, timber-style windows while providing you with all the benefits of a PVC window – they are even accepted in Grade II listed properties (subject to council approval). J’Adoor When is a door not a door? When it’s a fabulous bi-fold, French or patio door! Ok, yes these are still all doors but they are also so much more. They are an accessory to your home and your lifestyle. Imagine waking up and opening your beautiful French doors as the morning light floods in. A little too idyllic? Perhaps, but it’s a lovely feeling all the same! If any of these ideas pique your interest and start you down a path of refreshing the exterior of your home then contact ABL Plastics, a fantastic local company that’s only too happy to help you create your ideal home.

Explore the reaches of Cornwall in luxury with Cornish chauffeur firm, Duchy Cars.

C

ornwall has a lot to offer those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether your interest is simply lying on the beach and soaking up the Cornish sun, exploring beautiful subtropical gardens or throwing yourself into the wealth of activities from watersports to cycling, it’s sure to be well catered for. The kickback lifestyle of seaside living, on its own, tends to bring visitors back time and time again! In fact, it’s quite possible that the only thing stopping you from visiting this gorgeous county and exploring the reaches of our coasts is the drive. Not only can it take an age to wade your way through the busy motorways of high season; when you arrive, the roads can be frighteningly unfamiliar. Fortunately, the team at Duchy Cars understands all of this and appreciates the difference it makes – being able to get around in comfort. What’s more, with a transfer service that can get you to airports, marinas and stations all over the UK, you can take the

stress out of the worst part of your trip with just one phone call! So, rather than drive all the way, why not hop on a quick flight to Newquay airport, from selected cities, and let them do the rest? If travelling down from Bath or Bristol, simply let your personal chauffeur pick you up and drive you door to door! Specialising in business chauffeuring and long distance luxury travel, particularly for those wanting to make the most of a coastal retreat to Cornwall, this impressive, local business has been driving clients to and from their holiday air and seaports since 1995. Having previously employed cars from BMW, Lexus and Audi, when we spoke to owner, Steve, he was delighted to announced the most recent addition to the Duchy Cars fleet – a Tesla Model S, the futuristic looking, electric car from SpaceX entrepreneur, Elon Musk. Being the first business in Cornwall to register a Tesla as a private hire vehicle, this new addition is a massive step towards lowering Duchy Cars’ carbon footprint. Steve explained: “A few taxi companies

in Cornwall already use pure electric or hybrid vehicles. The problem is many require charging more than once a day and their range, even with a full battery, can be as little as 20 miles. This, of course, is not what you want when you’re looking to explore Cornwall, from coast to coast, with only a limited amount of time at your disposal. The Tesla does away with such issues which is why, for many reasons, it is absolutely top of its class!” Whether you’re a couple wanting to get around in luxury and style, or a group looking to get from A to B in as organised a fashion as possible, Duchy Cars will see to it that every mile is made as easy as can be. Now, they can do it at as little cost to the environment as possible. What’s more, at the heart of the

professional chauffeur service lies an ethos of discretion and courtesy, with plenty of combined experience working with a variety of clients, from senior managers and directors to VIPs and celebrities! So, if you want to avoid the stress of being behind the wheel in Cornwall but don’t want to compromise on comfort, style and punctuality, give the Duchy Cars team a call!

Stay

A world away What is it about a sea view that makes you feel so good? We’ve done a little research and think we might have some answers.

W

Whatever the reason, we can all recognise the unique mixture of calm, inspiration, reverie and excitement we feel when faced with crystalline waters shimmering in the sun. If you fancy coming and experiencing the revitalising effects of the sea then a stay in a coastal retreat is a must – just imagine the feeling of waking up to these views! Forever Cornwall is a small family-based letting agency with a team that takes great pride in hand-picking each holiday home, many of which boast unforgettable sea views. But it doesn’t stop at finding these amazing properties; the team work hard to ensure they know each property inside and out so that they can provide you with your perfect getaway by the sea.

hile Cornwall is only a drive away, having such an incredible sea view in front of you can make it seem as though work and all the stresses of daily life are a world away. But what is it about azure waters stretching out to the horizon that makes you feel so good – apart from the chilled Prosecco in your hand? Maria Gendall, co-owner of Forever Cornwall Unique Retreats, has an idea: “I think sea views tap into memories, not just nostalgic childhood memories of happy holidays, but deep ancestral dreams of what might be over the horizon.” This is a lovely sentiment that perhaps seascapes transport us to places in the mind that are not just happy, but are also linked to our sense of adventure and wonderment! But there might possibly be some scientific reason as to why an ocean view brings out these feelings of happiness and peace. Professor Amber Pearson of Michigan State University in the USA says: “Increased views of blue space is significantly associated with lower levels of psychological distress.” Of course, the fresh sea air helps as well! Indeed, you may well be aware that our famed sea air gives off healthy ‘negative ions’, which actually increase our ability to absorb oxygen and balance our levels of serotonin, the natural ‘feel-good’ chemical that combats stress.

Outside bride

Spend your special day amidst family, friends and an idyllic outdoor atmosphere with Cornish Tipi Weddings.

L

et’s be honest, everybody loves Cornwall. And while people still flock to our sunny shores for the ultimate seaside holiday, people are now flooding to this stunning county to experience a unique wedding destination! Getting married in the great outdoors, often with a festival vibe or boho country feel, is a growing dream with city dwellers who want to create something really different for their day of days. Cornish Tipi Weddings is the top location for the wild at heart with its incredibly pretty woodland, freshwater lake, streams and meadow areas for ceremonies, receptions and camping. It’s a quirky venue set up alongside the 20-year success of Cornish Tipi Holidays. Outdoor wedding venues are becoming increasingly popular and this one is no exception, with a famous soap star – Eastenders in case you’re interested – marrying there a couple of years ago and fashion designers coming on honeymoon to one of the very first outdoor wedding locations in the UK. Add a couple of dozen fully equipped tipis, and the option to bring your own tents or campervans, and you’ve got the perfect mix for an unforgettable

wedding weekend. Two decades of camping experience on this lovely 20-acre site means that the team behind both the wedding and holidays know all about the importance of special time spent with family and friends. Being so close to the coast – only five minutes from the beautiful Port Isaac – they also know all about the swift-changing Cornish weather and always advise wedding guests and campers to come well prepared with everything from sun cream to wellies! Another top tip is to bring your own tipple! The Cornish Tipis team don’t believe in corkage charges; bring all your own drinks and set up a rustic bar with flowers, homemade signs and fairy lights to give a homely feel a world away from the formal bar experience of hotels and caterers. Whether it’s an elopement special just for two – yes, that is one of the packages – or a grand affair for over 200 family and friends, you’ll find it difficult to do better than this venue for romance and Cornish style.

Making the most of Cornwall’s ever-changing produce, The Rising Sun in Truro offers incredible, locally sourced food amidst a welcoming atmosphere.

ornwall is truly a foodie’s county, boasting incredible eateries that base menus on incredible local produce, which ensures you are experiencing full Cornish flavour. Nowhere is this truer than at award-winning The Rising Sun in Cornwall’s great little city of Truro. Head chef and owner Tom Hannon keeps everyone on their toes with an ever-evolving menu, offering you the best seasonal produce, as well as delicious new dishes to delight your taste buds. “Nature doesn’t produce the bounty of each season all at once. Ingredients are constantly in flux, overlapping and coming and going all the time,” says Tom in between taste testing his freshly made Cornish raspberry sorbet. Working in this flexible way, changing the dishes and menus regularly, means that Tom can use seasonality to his, and your, advantage. Sourcing the best ingredients he can get his hands on, Tom and his small kitchen team create sophisticated yet familiar food, elevating favourite classics and developing modern flavours and techniques. Roger and Tanya, owners of Cornish Duck, are a perfect example of Tom’s careful and ethical sourcing. Located not far from the pub, they rear free-range ducks in a natural environment and for longer than other producers, resulting in better quality meat and removing any need for chemical interference.

“This is important on every level: better for the ducks, better for the environment and better for our customers,” Tom passionately states. A mouth-watering example on the menu is Cornish duck with fondant potato, braised red cabbage, butternut squash, poached pear and a red wine jus – delicious! With this approach, showcasing great quality ingredients to their very best, The Rising Sun is gaining industry acclaim as well as the allimportant loyal customer following. Achieving a lot in a short space of time, Tom has started to receive some well-deserved recognition: “The award I am most proud of has to be the Taste of the West ‘Best South West Dining Pub’ because the values they hold dear mirror ours at The Rising Sun.” The largest independent regional food group in the UK, Taste of the West supports fantastic local food and drink from Gloucestershire to Cornwall, with an ethos of quality, integrity and provenance.

Thrills and stills Join Carla Regler on the Isle of Wight this July, for her Round the Island Boat Race photography workshop.

ì ABOVE It’s obvious that Carla loves her job ê BELOW Carla’s portfolio is both impressive and eclectic

F

or photographers, Cornwall has become somewhat of a Mecca, with its rolling, hilly landscapes and dazzling coastal views. Whether you’re atop Tregonning hill overlooking the Penwith peninsula, or at sea level capturing the orange hues of a Cornish sunset; capturing the raging storms of the Atlantic as they break, in vain, against the walls of one of Cornwall’s many fishing harbours or photographing the sea at its most tranquil; there’s plenty to inspire the eyes of anyone bearing a camera.

When it comes to seeing it through a lens, Porthleven-based photographer, Carla Regler tells us that it’s all about being creative with the camera, both in Cornwall and around the world. Carla’s work showcases some of the world’s most beautiful regions in aweinspiring light and focus, from the stormy seas of Porthleven to the snowbound reaches of the Arctic. Based in Cornwall, she runs photography workshops to those looking to capture the best that this astonishing landscape has to offer, but she doesn’t just stick to the south west, or indeed the UK.

Throughout the year, Carla offers clients the opportunity to join her as she travels the world, camera in hand. When we speak with Carla, she explains how excited she is for this coming July when, in partnership with Light and Land Photography, she’ll be heading to the Isle of Wight for the iconic Round the Island Boat Race. Sound tempting to you? Well, the good news is you can join Carla! Aboard a private rib, Carla could be helping you to professionally capture the thrills and spills of what’s expected to be an actionpacked race. On board, there’ll be oilskins for everyone, but Carla tells us that waterproof covers for camera equipment are a must: “I’m used to being out on the water with my camera, as I own a fishing boat here in Cornwall. This gives me plenty of experience of what you will need to enjoy the day – and, of course, I’ll be on the rib with you to ensure you get some fantastic shots!”

And it’s not just the race that you should be excited for, either. According to Carla, there are some great sights to take in of the beautiful little island and, even if there’s something you’d like to photograph from the shore, the skipper will be more than happy to oblige, as you make your way around the coastline. ornwall is proud to be a very dogfriendly county, with a fantastic number of dog-friendly beaches for splashing around, incredible countryside for walkies and an impressive array of cafés and pubs that welcome dogs and their well-behaved owners. Of course, sometimes we need to make alternative arrangements. Whether off on a business trip without your best furry friend or you are a visitor staying in a holiday cottage that sadly doesn’t allow dogs, finding a cosy and comforting place for your dog to stay is a top priority. A kennel owner, based in the heart of Cornwall, has worked non-stop to upgrade six kennels into luxury dog retreats. These units provide your dog with the ultimate holiday experience as they include televisions playing programmes aimed at a canine audience, comfortable handcrafted wooden beds and are fully heated to keep your best friend warm and cosy year-round. Of course, food is always the best part of a holiday so your dog could be feasting on gourmet meals, which are available upon request, including salmon with creamed vegetables and basil on a bed of rice! Owner, William Bruce, says: “As a pet owner I am aware how stressful it can be when families have no choice but to use kennels. Our aim at Creusa is to minimise that stress by ensuring animals feel at

home. My dogs love wildlife channels so we show Attenborough films in the suites.” The new units have safety glass windows and doors creating a peaceful retreat that is ideal for nervous dogs. In fact, you can even request a calming pheromone diffuser, which emits pheromonene to help reduce stress in dogs that are exposed to challenging situations. For those holidaymakers who are not allowed dogs in their accommodation, the kennels are perfect for a doggie bed and breakfast as you can come and collect them in the morning and then return them after a day of exploring Cornwall. William adds that they are even happy to bathe any muddy and sandy dogs – ideal! Doggy day-care is also available, which is perfect for locals going to work or holidaymakers visiting attractions that aren’t suitable for dogs. Indeed, with state-of-the-art security for added peace of mind, this kennel sounds like the perfect solution for any canine needs. I mean, honestly, gourmet food while watching David Attenborough – sign me up!

Inspired by nature Designer Tom Raffield discusses his passion for great, sustainable design and the ancient art of steam bending!

I

love Grand Designs on Channel 4 and after featuring some of Tom Raffield’s fabulous pieces in a recent issue I was just a tad excited to finally meet him. The house (or extension) that Tom and his wife Danie designed and built featured on one of the best ever episodes of Grand Designs, so I was ready to be impressed even by their modern wooden-clad building. And I was, but in a deeper and more fundamental way… because the building is not bold and showy; in fact, the first thing you really notice is the

fairytale, stone-built gamekeeper’s cottage… it’s absolutely stunning and would make the perfect back-drop for Hansel and Gretel. The new extension with the wood already silvering and softening in colour against its woodland backdrop is also perfect, settling and nestling into the background rather than dominating. Its curves and lines follow the contours of the hill and trees around it. This is so much better than the photos! Tom agrees. “In 100 years’ time, we hope that visitors will still note the beauty and craftsmanship in the stonework of the cottage and then see the same in the woodwork of the extension.” The house is equally

gorgeous inside, with wood panelling on the walls and Tom’s beautiful furniture and lighting. Afterwards, we take a quick look around outside with all its little sheds and outbuildings; a hive of activity of bending wood and assembling lights and furniture, somehow reminiscent of Santa’s workshops! As Tom points out on the way round, everything is made here: each stage of a piece made and finished by hand… and I so want something made here with its sprinkling of a little woodland magic dust! Tom studied design at Falmouth University. “It really was the only place for me to study; although born in Devon and growing up on Exmoor, I love Falmouth for its atmosphere, art and culture. And I love Cornwall, surrounded by its seascape it feels like you are on the edge of the world sometimes with the wind and storms; for a designer it has this wonderful sense of space; it feels like there are no boundaries.” He grins sheepishly and pours the tea. It was whilst studying that he discovered the ancient art of steam bending wood. And that, so they say, was that. “It’s an incredibly sustainable way of working with wood. The steam bending itself is very low energy and you need none of the glues and nasties that go into making veneers. And you see the real wood and grain; the designs work with the wood. We want to make things that will become the heirlooms of the future. It’s not about fashion and trends, it’s about

designing classics that will never feel dated. That’s real sustainability… buying something once that will last a lifetime and still be desirable.” It’s easy to catch Tom’s enthusiasm and passion for his subject, it’s the driving force behind everything he and Danie do. He is also rightly proud of the business. He employs about 20 people and works closely with local colleges to develop apprenticeships. “Our first apprentice now runs the workshop and our second apprentice works on new designs with me. Growing the team is part of being sustainable for me, we have kept all our staff.” And there are plenty of plans for the future, extending the range of furniture they make, moving into garden furniture and they are going to sell panels of steam bent wood for the exterior and interior of houses. Evening is approaching through the woods and I need to let Tom get on. He looks around his woods and workshops as he leads me out. “Danie and I are incredibly lucky to have all this,” he tells me. “We are doing exactly what we want in a place we love with a team of people we love!” Something he said to me earlier comes back as I climb into my car. “If you have an idea and can create something beautiful born from passion and belief… it will probably be good!” And this is very, very good!

Refresh your interior style in time for summer with Merchants and Makers.

O

ne of the easiest and most effective ways to transform any room is to update your soft furnishings; whether a bright new curtain, a beautiful new cushion for the sofa or a fresh new upholstering of your favourite chair. We recently spoke with local business Merchants and Makers, a fabulous interior fabric showroom in north Cornwall, to find out how you can turn a piece of fabric into a statement piece for your home. The showroom, which is located just six miles from Launceston, boasts an enviable array of fabrics for an endless variety of needs. Indeed, whatever budget you are working from there is bound to be something to catch your eye. From fabrics on a budget to high-end brands such as Harlequin, Osborne and Little, Villa Nova and Romo. However, the versatility doesn’t stop with the fabrics themselves! You can either take the fabrics home to use yourself or you can speak with the team of experienced curtain makers, upholsterers, soft furnishers and interior designers who will work closely with you to create exactly what you are looking for. This team of experienced craftspeople have worked on an incredibly diverse range of projects, from perfecting a beachside living theme to maintaining the traditional style of a country estate. In fact, the projects have been so diverse that they often find themselves creating something completely bespoke to fit the client’s needs. One such example came about when a client wanted a canopy for their half tester bed. The team was delighted to try something new and took great pride in creating a beautifully detailed canopy complete with French passementerie. With the workshop right next door to the showroom, speaking with the team and getting some advice and discussing your plans couldn’t be easier. Whether you have some beautiful but awkward to cover apex windows in need of a curtain, a bedroom in need of some Roman blinds or something completely unexpected, just pop in and have a chat! With a friendly and experienced team, a full measuring and fitting service and truly stunning fabrics to choose from, has there ever been a better time to refresh your home?
