Too often we choose the safe option when picking out tiles for our bathroom, and unsurprisingly this usually leads to a generic finish. o why not break away fro the norm and introduce a pattern tile? Interior designer Charlotte Hall tells us: “A pattern can transform a space, making it much more dynamic and vibrant. You can even pick out colours that match other products, tying it all together and creating that one off look.” Over the last few years, patterned tile production has really taken off and there are a whole host of designs to choose fro . o get down to nteriora today and choose a tile that will give your bathroom that individual and bespoke look you’ve been looking for. t’s a fact. Getting outside is good for you. There’s a real transformative nature in si ply filling your lungs with fresh air, taking in the birdsong and enjoying a leisurely stroll through the countryside. Fortunately countryside is something that ornwall is blessed with a lot of and with our any gardens in bloo why not see for yourself this summer? A visit to a garden makes the perfect family day out a great way to bring e eryone together, and ideal for young families to enjoy a picnic in a contained environment. More i portantly what better excuse for enjoying a cream tea in a beautiful setting? ornwall’s uni ue icrocli ate pro ides the perfect conditions for rare exotic and subtropical plants to thri e any of which you won’t find in other parts of the U . s T gardening expert att a es recently told us ornwall has a war er cli ate co pared to any parts of the U but a wetter one too so the palette of plants is very different. It’s subtropical, verdant, and larger than life; full of form and structure.” The sheltered south coast in particular has a huge concentration of gardens, stretching from the mouth of the Helford river all the way up beyond t ustell. ou’ll find erdant landscapes replete with large ferns and palms, great collections of camellias, and luscious valley gardens such as Trebah and lendurgan that cascade down to the water’s edge. Many of these collections of rare plants ha e origins in the tra els of explorers and horticulturalists of years gone by who brought back exotic speci ens fro distant lands, and found the Cornish climate to be perfect for them to thrive. These collections have matured and steadily been added to o er the years beco ing the world-class gardens they are today.

DISCOVER MORE As ever, we’ve just given a small taster of Cornwall’s many beautiful and varied gardens. It’s true, we could easily have chosen an entirely different list altogether. Yet with so many to choose from, we hope our selection gives a flavour of what to expect and spurs you on to discover Cornwall’s many gardens on your own. Here are a few more ideas: • Eden Project • Trelissick • Godolphin • Pinetum Gardens • Glendurgan • Lanhydrock • Potager

BELOW Protea Cynaroides at Tremenheere

With such an evocative name, you’re simply compelled to discover more about the Lost Gardens of Heligan – a stroke of marketing genius! Owned by the Tremayne family for centuries, Heligan Estate was once home to thriving, pretty gardens. Yet the land on the estate gradually turned to disrepair and became overgrown in the early to mid-20th Century, accelerated in large part by the lack of men to work the ground during the two World Wars, and the house’s acquisition for the respective war efforts. Within a generation or so, almost all trace of the former gardens had disappeared. It was only a chance discovery of small room in the derelict walled gardens on the estate in 1990 that sparked the regeneration project to bring them back to their former glory. And Cornwall is all the better for it. A day out at Heligan is a real adventure for all the family, with acres of land to explore and a huge variety of styles and plant species, contrasting dramatically from the structured Victorian Productive Gardens to the wild and wonderful Jungle. Elle Thackham of Heligan tells us: “There is so much that is special about The Lost Gardens of Heligan, but for me it’s the unusual elements of the garden such as the Pineapple pits and the Jungle. It’s amazing what we can grow right here in Cornwall.” Incidentally, the gardens’ rediscovery and regeneration owe a lot to Sir Tim Smit, the man who was instrumental in creating the neighbouring Eden Project – another spectacle on the outskirts of St Austell that you simply must visit. That two of Britain’s most awe-inspiring gardens are within such close proximity to each other is testament to both Cornwall’s horticultural excellence and the inspiring people who have helped shape these amazing spaces. Heligan is also home to Kneehigh Theatre’s Asylum. Discover more about upcoming summer events on the Heligan website. www.heligan.com

EXPERIENCE

Trewaington Gardens

Trengwainton Gardens, Penzance The National Trust manages a range of beautiful country homes and gardens across Cornwall, from the grand houses of Trelissick and Lanhydrock, both of which boast equally impressive grounds, to the aforementioned subtropical valley garden Glendurgan, complete with its own maze – fun for both children and adults alike. Another you may not have heard of – but should really seek out – is Trengwainton, one of the most southwesterly gardens on the mainland. Trengwainton is a lush paradise, awash with colour at this time of year. Typical of National Trust managed properties, Trengwainton is particularly family friendly, with excellent facilities and a fabulous café. With plenty of good paths, Trengwainton is particularly accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There’s even an all-terrain mobility scooter available to hire on site. Dogs are also welcome on leads, so you needn’t leave any of the family at home! www.nationaltrust.org.uk/trengwainton-garden

THE MARK OF SUCCESS Following on from being awarded the title of 'Best Estate Agency in Cornwall 2017/18’, we catch up with Rohrs & Rowe to find out how they’ve been getting on so far in 2018.

F

rom chatting to the team, it seems like their early successes are continuing at pace in 2018 and that at the time of winning their award, they’d only shown but a fraction of their potential. From what we hear and see, they are proving their niche offering is now excelling in the market place. Their vision and approach of creating something completely different to traditional agencies is now being seen in the sales results which they have achieved in the earlier selling season of 2018. According to the country’s leading property portal, Rightmove, between 1st January and the end of May, they agreed more open market sales of houses above £750,000 across Cornwall than any other agent. This is quite an achievement for a company in only its second full year of trading and with several established competitors within the market.

In addition, the company has also successfully sold numerous properties off market too. They state the results they are probably most proud of though is that a large number of their sales have been on properties which had previously been for sale with other agencies and quite often for a long time. Rohrs & Rowe's renowned marketing style and innovative campaigns are a major part of their successes and now they are actively seeking more properties, to add to their portfolio of offerings. They have many active buyers looking across a broad spectrum of prices and locations, for similar aspirational properties for which the brand is now synonymous. Martyn and Matthew explain: “As with everything we do, we aspire to be the best we possibly can. We hope that our passion for the houses we sell and the county in which we live, comes through in everything we do. We are beyond delighted that our recent sales figures back up the award that we were so proud to receive and we would be delighted to confidentially speak with anyone who feels that our marketing style, brand and most importantly, experience could help them, even if they already have their house for sale. The incredible response we have received from the market gives us a great deal of confidence and pro es that our unique approach really does work in grabbing the attention of the best buyers.” With over 50 years of combined agency experience within the company, and a dynamic in-house marketing team, Rohrs & Rowe attribute their success to some simple, but incredibly powerful ingredients: experience, correct and honest advice, passion, unbounded enthusiasm, attention to detail in their marketing and exceptional personal service. This boutique and personal approach clearly shows why the company were

recognised in their fledgling stages as est Estate Agency in Cornwall'; they continue to go from strength to strength and we very much look forward to seeing more of their excellent offerings over the coming months here at Cornwall Living, similar to the four fabulous properties they have featured with us this month.

ost of us know what we should be doing when it comes to weight loss, stress relief or stopping smoking, but few of us do it. This is the very real issue that Cornish based coaching practice Renewu addresses to help clients achieve and sustain long lasting changes. Renewu offers a range of options to clients: all inclusi e fi e-day residential retreats one-hour weekly coaching sessions face-toface or by phone and intensi e one-to-one residential programmes. Jill Wright, founder of Renewu takes a holistic view of body and mind. A key element to her approach is to look at people’s self-beliefs to identify those that are not helping her clients and holding them back from getting the results they want. This can be applied to any health and wellness goal, whether it’s weight loss, stopping smoking, boosting energy or reducing stress. By focusing on what clients see as the future versions of themselves, Jill helps them to make this a reality they can believe in and start to make happen now. Jill couples this with advice on how, when, why and what to eat. She does stress that this is not about dieting, but about eating a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner, introducing movement to their day and relaxation techniques. This sets them up for inevitable success and turns these healthy habits into behaviours that last.

ll coaching offers a safe non-judge ental and nurturing environment for clients to start their transfor ational journey. s well as exploring the self-beliefs and eating habits that hold people back from keeping off those extra pounds, the retreats include complimentary treatments and acti ities such as reflexology assage and movement, helping people to relax and unwind. Jill explains: “The changes that are introduced are simple and easy to sustain. I’m passionate that the experience should be enjoyable and not tortuous. This is evident in the fact that Jill insists on serving what she calls ‘normal, everyday food’. “People should leave feeling refreshed, revived and committed to a healthier, more positive lifestyle. Clients are amazed at the impact the coaching has on all aspects of their li es they find they feel good about the way they look, which can strengthen their romantic relationships, and their confidence can gi e the the i petus to start to drive their career forward again. The boost in energy also means they have more quality time with their kids. The positive results are far reaching and long lasting.

LAKESIDE

LUXURY We catch up with Selina and Jason, founders of Trecombe Lakes, who tell us all about their story so far. ABOVE é Pod living at Trecombe Lakes INSET Trecombe Lakes sits within a haven of natural beauty

F

or Selina and Jason, founders of Trecombe Lakes, moving to Cornwall was a completely new chapter. Moving from east Sussex with three young boys, the pair had no idea where they were going to live or what they were going to do, however they knew that they wanted to launch their own business within the travel industry. After a long search, and after losing one property when it fell through the day before exchanging, the couple came across some land and lakes near Constantine. “We went to have a look on a cold wet day in March . t was a night are to e en find as the whole site was overgrown and to start with, we totally discounted it as an option as it looked like too big a job.” Around this time they decided to take a family break, staying in a camping pod. Roughly the size of a four-man tent, they had to bring all their own camping equipment, which, with three young boys, involved a lot of gear! “This got us thinking about designing our own fully-equipped pods that would be large enough to fit a kitchen and separate bathroom. We revisited the overgrown site that is now Trecombe Lakes and decided ‘this could be the one’.”

Selina and Jason have a number of years’ experience running their own companies, and they’ve also done their fair share of camping, having had some good and some not-so-good experiences. “That’s why we think Trecombe Lakes works so well, as you can experience the whole ambience of ca ping with fire pits and barbe ues while having the comfort of a proper bed, your own shower and toilet!” The rest, as they say, is history, and even now, the pair strives to push the business forward. In fact, they recently announced the co pletion of the first of six co Lakeside Lodges. This modular holiday home has been built with style, comfort and strong green credentials, and includes a log-fired wedish hot tub on the decking giving visitors that extra-indulgent option, perfect for special occasions where you want to relax and rejuvenate in the pinnacle of luxury.

f you’ve been visiting Cornwall, or plan to visit this summer and haven’t yet reached the wild throws of the west coast then you really are missing a trick. Land’s End is mainland Britain’s most south-westerly point and one of the country’s most famous landmarks; the Isles of Scilly are just a stretch of ocean away and beyond that, the next stop on the map is North America. This is deep in the heart of Cornwall with mystical standing stones and mermaid tales woven into the heart of seaside villages. Explore the crystal clear waters of Porthcurno and watch an outdoor performance with the backdrop of sea and cliffs at the Minack Theatre; walk along the Penwith Heritage Coast and swim in tranquil seas at Sennen Cove. There are so many magical moments to experience on this coast of Cornwall, and we’ve found the perfect place to experience them from. Bosavern Guest House is located just outside of St Just and provides the ideal base from which to explore this incredible area. The beautiful guesthouse offers topquality accommodation in the unique and wonderful landscape of the Land’s End peninsula. The welcoming lounge is the perfect place to unwind and the delightfully furnished rooms are fully equipped with all the little luxuries and extra personal

touches to help make your stay special. We hear from owner Helen Stevens who tells us: “From stormy winter seas to su er sunshine spring flowers to autumn sunsets, you will be enchanted by the history and beauty on our doorstep. Many guests return year after year to enjoy our unique and wonderful landscape.” To make matters even better, Bosavern doesn’t just offer a place to stay; it also offers self-guided walking holidays as well. Covering several parts of the South West Coast Path, walk from St Just to Porthcurno, St Ives to Zennor, Sennen Cove to Lamorna and Mullion Cove to the Lizard, with the advantage of returning to a comfortable bed each evening via the collection service and waking up the following morning to a scrumptious breakfast. A taste of THE SEA

A visit to the Camel Estuary in north Cornwall isn’t complete without a stop at one of Rick Stein’s fabulous eateries.

BELOW The Seafood Restaurant

I

t’s easy to appreciate Rick Stein’s love of Cornwall and what led him to base so many of his eateries here. Rick says: “I like the fact that on a sunny day, with not a cloud in the sky, there’s nowhere else on earth I would rather be. Maybe it’s because we don’t have that many sunny days or maybe it’s the soft quality of light that gives the white houses, green patches of trees and the deep blue estuary the look of a water colour.” Whatever it is about Cornwall, it’s definitely ade an i pact on ick which is reflected in his lo e of the sea and seafood Nestled a few miles up the Camel Estuary is the beautiful fishing port of adstow. n the narrow streets around the harbour there are tiny old pubs, famous restaurants and quirky art galleries a ong which you’ll find the Rick Stein family of businesses, all providing incredible seafood, one way or another. Why not start by heading to Rick Stein’s Café and tuck into a delicious serving of Asian inspired salt and pepper prawns; with its relaxed setting, it’s the perfect place to refuel with the family. Or, if you’re in a rush to carry on your tour of Cornwall then grab a traditional box of fish and chips and look out at the Camel Estuary as you make your way through your box of goodness. For something a little more formal, enjoy drinks on the terrace at The Seafood Restaurant, where it all began. Contrary to what you might believe, walk-ins are very welcome and the seafood bar in the middle of the restaurant offers the perfect place for an impromptu plate of fresh seafood. On those sunny days t etroc’s istro has a beautiful courtyard available for alfresco dining and

the three-course menu will leave you feeling utterly satisfied and ready for a siesta. If you love a good pub, The Cornish Arms in t erryn offers a si ple ritish enu inspired by Rick’s recipes. Dogs are welcome on leads, so you needn’t leave your furry friends at home and the generous beer garden is the perfect spot to relax with a pint of Trelawny in hand. On an evening, pull up a pew at uby’s ar back in adstow and enjoy the ambience of wooden stools and tables making it feel like you’re sitting within a grand ship as you sip on your refreshing tipple. If you want something a little more exciting, then make sure to order a cocktail made by award-winning bartender, Mr Lyan. If all this delicious food has inspired you to create your own culinary masterpieces, then perhaps you should finish by booking a course at Rick Stein’s Cookery School, offering you the chance to learn the skills and make your own dishes inspired by Rick’s travels. Rick Stein’s passion for great seafood and the Cornish lifestyle is evident within all of his eateries, with most boasting incredible views of the Camel Estuary and offering some of the very best seafood there is. Whether you want a fine dining experience or just a box of fish and chips on the harbour, Rick’s got somewhere for everyone to enjoy a taste of the sea.

e m o h y a d Holi GUIDE A breakdown of George’s top tips when buying a holiday home in Cornwall.

I

n an ongoing series of holiday home tips, George at Cornish Traditional Cottages has discussed all the elements to consider when planning on buying a holiday home in Cornwall. Here’s a breakdown of the tips we’ve heard so far. First of all, he emphasises the importance of research. He tells us: “Monitor the property market for a few months and talk to a holiday letting agency to understand which properties appeal most in which locations,” highlighting that it’s worth digging beneath the surface of your favourite Cornish towns to understand the property market and tourist economy. Whether you choose a mobile home, a lodge in a holiday park, a bungalow, a semi-detached or detached house, it’s very much up to your budget and, also, how you can make it appeal to tourists. Quirky, unusual and interesting holiday homes, even cabins and caravans, if executed right, can attract a great deal of interest. On the other hand, there will always be holidaymakers who want that ‘home away from home’ experience, whether this is a characterful cottage, smart townhouse or sprawling farmhouse. Of course, when it comes to choosing a holiday home, location is the defining feature. actors to consider are is an area popular or undiscovered? Coastal or rural? You’ll be tempted by honeypot locations like St Ives, Bude and Newquay, but just because another location isn’t teeming with tourists, it doesn’t make it an unviable investment opportunity.

Finally, it’s worth noting the kind of property attributes that can really help make your investment a fruitful one. George tells us: “These days WiFi and broadband of a decent speed are expected in holiday homes, and free of charge too!” Other considerations include whether you can offer family and dog-friendly accommodation, a swimming pool, or beachfront positioning. George’s step-by-step guide gives an indication of the kind of things you should consider when thinking about buying a holiday home in Cornwall. The team at Cornish Traditional Cottages can provide expert advice and, in George’s words, “are here to point you in the right direction,” showing that the company is happy to help you weave through the web of properties and find the ideal holiday ho e for you and your guests!

yler-Street gin, which is distilled from a vintage copper pot still for authenticity and fla our is citrus orientated and blended with ten traditional botanicals from the Mediterranean and Europe. It’s proven to be a perfect match for tonic and cocktails, with a hint of dryness and overtones of spice. Tyler-Street Gin dates from 2016, when William Tyler-Street and his friend, Rob Dorsett – Langley Distillery’s Master Distiller – were experimenting and developing new spirits, like true alchemists! William wanted to create a gin for gin and tonics and cocktails, but with a contemporary edge. Between them, they focussed their skills on creating a gin with what they describe as an effervescent fresh like spring, a crisp citrus-like o ertone with a fla our robust in juniper to stand the best cocktail challenge in the world – the gin and tonic. William is well travelled; he was born in India and raised in Cornwall and Malaysia. This upbringing has nurtured a passion for fla ours especially rich full-on aro as such as citrus, hence the citric lead in this gin! He became a distiller in 2012, with his other brand Curio Spirits, after wanting to create something distinctive and memorable. Speaking about Tyler-Street Gin, he tells us The design is a fla our landscape that reflects y passion for big fla ours and y passion for travel and new experiences. I think Tyler-Street Gin really hits the mark as one of the best to mix with tonic.” In just two years, this gin has already received a number of accolades and awards. It won a gold medal in the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) and another gold in The Spirits Business Gin Masters 2017. The IWSC also nominated William for Gin Producer UK 2017 – a fantastic and honourable achievement

for a distiller of just four years! Of TylerStreet Gin, the IWSC said: “enticing on the nose – something discerningly different. Fruit driven and atypical with aromas of tangerine and lime coming to the fore, amongst a backdrop of botanical complexity. Controlled but fruity in the mouth. Vivid and lively, with a nice point of difference. Demands attention, and deservedly so.” Tyler-Street London Dry can be purchased from Harvey Nichols stores around the UK and this year will see it entering more competitions, trade, and consumer events around the UK, so it’s certainly one to watch!

A PUB

LUNCH

Our top tips for a tranquil day spent by the coast in Mylor and the surrounding area, before relaxing at The Lemon Arms. ABOVE é The Lemon Arms boasts a wide selection of cask ales and lagers INSET Wild Cornish mussels steamed in white wine and served with crusty bread

S

ituated right next to Cornwall’s famous sailing waters, The Carrick Roads, Mylor is the perfect base from which to set sail and enjoy the buzzing atmosphere of Falmouth. Or, if you’d prefer a coastal stroll along the seafront then simply wander along to the Trefusis headland walk, a beautiful and scenic stroll towards lushing and perhaps finish with a picnic on the beach and maybe even a leisurely swim. Then, after an invigorating stroll back to Mylor, we recommend seeking refuge and sustenance at The Lemon Arms in the heart of the village. Perfect if you’re staying in one of Mylor’s numerous holiday lets, The Lemon Arms is your typical village pub, with a tempting range of ales and lagers to refresh after your day by the coast, or on the seas! Sometimes it’s nice to ditch the car and explore on foot and Mylor allows you to do just that. Whether you’ve spent the day wandering along the coastal path or experiencing world class sailing for yourself, there’s nothing better than returning to the comforting environment of a local pub for a relaxing pint in the sun. The Lemon Arms has a cosy and peaceful beer garden that you can enjoy in the

summer months and a warm, inviting log burner when the days start to draw in. We did a little digging and found this review from one happy customer who says: “Now there’s a pub! We walked to The Lemon Arms along the beautiful creek from Mylor marina. It feels like a real locals’ place, a great atmosphere with really friendly staff. I’d go back in a heartbeat.” t’s always a win when you find so ewhere with a great atmosphere and The Lemon Arms also has a wonderful seasonal menu to enjoy as well. We recommend the deep fried brie to start with a glass of red wine, and the Mylor butchers rump steak for a main with all the trimmings, then (if you’ve got space) treat yourself to The Lemon Arms signature Eton Mess! Don’t take our word for it though, head there for yourself and experience a true local Cornish pub.

The two bedrooms, which each have en suites, offer an oasis of calm, with the addition of White Company towels and bedding and an Atlantic blanket carefully folded at the end of each bed. Into the living/ dining area and you’ll find plenty of space in

which to wind down after a long day spent exploring. Large windows beautifully frame the view over the harbour and behind them, two comfortable chairs are in prime position to open the window, sit back and enjoy a balmy summer’s evening over a glass of something cold. Binoculars are also provided, perfect for spotting dolphins on the coast during the summer, and storm watching in winter. he partnership features the best horticultural practices and heritage produce taken from the The Lost Gardens and brilliantly presented by The Idle Rocks. As well as hosting over 300 different varieties of fruit and vegetables, The Heligan Kitchen Garden raises a collection of rare breed livestock, many of which are rarely seen in restaurants. These will be showcased at The Idle Rocks throughout the seasonal menus with a trophy ingredient featured each month and recipes created by Head Chef, Guy Owen and his team. “It was Cornish produce that fuelled my passion for food,” Guy says, “and this partnership with The Lost Gardens of eligan reflects both ine and the hotel’s ethos of using only the best ingredients.” The partnership has been set up, not only to highlight locally sourced ingredients, but also to act as an example of how local businesses can work together to showcase local producers and raise the profile of ornish food. “As a chef, the opportunity to work with the produce from the estate is truly a dream come true,” Guy continues, “their attention to detail, the hard work and stunning array of heritage fruit and vegetables is second to none.” The beautiful gardens were abandoned following World War I but with rigorous

restoration in the 1990s, treasures of the gardens past were unearthed. Spring this year saw the 26th anniversary of the gardens being opened to the public. “We are all extremely excited about joining forces with The Idle Rocks and the relationship going forward,” remarks George Elworthy, Managing Director at The ost ardens of eligan The dle ocks’ ethos for sustainability and locally sourcing produce mirrors our own beliefs and the modest manner in which Guy delivers this, is simply awe-inspiring.” Impressively, in January 2016, as a result of the dedication to Cornish food and the committed service to guests, The Idle Rocks became a member of the world renowned Relais and Châteaux collection of hotels. The restaurant's culinary credentials have catapulted with the launch of Chef Nights, partnering with some of the south west’s top chefs. DISCOVER MORE To see Jeremy at work in his studio, simply email hello@jeremysanders.co.uk to arrange a private visit.

eremy Sanders is now into his second summer living, working and painting around west Cornwall. He has been particularly inspired by the light that this part of the country enjoys at this time of year, enhanced by the fact that the Duchy is almost surrounded by water. He tells us that he is increasingly focusing on capturing those working and living in the local area and has been recreating unique events, including Flora Day in Helston and Mazey Day in Penzance. He’s also dipped into various food festivals that the region is famed for and is currently talking with some great local brands, who have been kind enough to offer him the chance to explore and paint around their businesses. This figurati e subject atter has always been of interest to me, having spent many years painting the streets of Cuba and South America. But it was visiting the Stanhope Forbes exhibition last summer at the Penlee House Gallery that has reignited my passion! “Forbes brilliantly and famously captured real people in their everyday lives at the same time that the impressionists were painting in France. He also worked outside –

or ‘en plein air’ – and this is something I’m striving to do much more of.” If you’ve been meaning to indulge your creative side, you can join Jeremy for a day and enjoy some one to one outdoor tuition. For just £95, which includes materials and equipment, Jeremy guarantees you’ll create a painting fit to take ho e and display. This August, on Monday 20th until Thursday 23rd, 12pm to 7pm, and then on Friday 24th August from 10am until 4pm, Jeremy will be painting and exhibiting at the Old Lifeboat House in Porthleven. But fear not! If those dates in your diary are already booked up, you can visit Jeremy’s studio throughout the summer by appointment.

BRIGHT IDEAS Designer Jo Downs launches her new Chandelier lighting collection.

T

his year, Jo Downs unveiled brand new work at the cutting edge of contemporary glass design with the launch of her spectacular new Chandelier lighting collection. The Launceston studio and gallery now showcases a wealth of uniquely beautiful, handcrafted new works that represent the next step in the co plex field of fusedglass design. From her trademark ocean-inspired motifs, to geometrically inspired designs, these collections update the classic concept of the chandelier for the 21st Century interior design market. The launch also marked the beginning of a new creative partnership between Jo Downs Handmade

Glass and design company Northern Lights, which has been creating inspiring lighting solutions since 1987 and has worked with Jo to create integrated lighting for her new range of chandeliers. Collections include elegant pieces inspired by nature, like her oceanic ‘Piscis Waterfall’ design, or cloud-inspired ‘Camella Altocumulus’ chandelier, as well as more dramatic, abstract pieces like her stunning ‘Tabella Aetatis’ rectangular chandelier, designed as a statement dining or conference table piece. Alongside these are new collections of wall mounted arc and panel lighting, such as her richly textured ‘Seascape’ wall lights, and panel lighting in Jo’s iconic ‘Beach’ palette of rainbow colours. Visitors to the Launceston gallery can get inspired, discuss design options with Jo’s friendly team, and explore each of the new collections, all of which are available as part of Jo’s new custom design service, Jo Downs Architectural Glass. So, if you’re a lover of Jo’s work, or you want to round off your contemporary décor with spectacular, cutting edge lighting, be sure to visit Jo Downs Glass Design in Launceston!

plastic pollution Introducing Surfers Against Sewage, a national marine conservation and campaigning charity.

TOP All help is appreciated no matter how big or small BELOW Volunteers in action at a beach clean

urfers Against Sewage is a charity that unites and empowers communities to take action and protect oceans, beaches, waves and wildlife. Head of Community and Engagement, Dom Ferris tells us: “We’ve made great progress on cleaning up our beaches from sewage, and although the cleanliness of our seas remains in the DNA of the organisation, our new ‘sewage’ is plastic pollution. Plastic pollution has sadly become synonymous with any coastal acti ity fro surfing to swi ing beach holidays to wildlife watching – it’s simply an expected part of our experience, but one we cannot and should not accept." In 1950, the world’s population of 2.5 billion produced 1.5 million tons of plastic; in 2016, over 7 billion people produced more than 320 million tons, and this is set to double by 2034. There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean, which can take hundreds (if not thousands) of years to degrade. But there is hope. Plastic is tangible; it’s an issue that even the smallest action can result in direct improvement. SAS’ Plastic Free Coastlines vision has led to the creation of a number of easy-to-access projects to tackle the issue at all levels of society, through schools, communities and government.

The recent Big Spring Beach Clean event saw over 35,000 inspiring individuals head to beaches, rivers, canals, marinas and lakes across the UK, removing a staggering 63 tonnes of marine plastic pollution. SAS also currently have over 300 villages, towns and cities across the UK working towards becoming Plastic Free Communities. Nationally, more change needs to happen, however SAS already have a presence in government, Dom explains: “We lobby and work with government and industries to curb throwaway plastic culture. Our campaign for the 5p plastic carrier bag charge led to an 80% decrease in the number of plastic bags used in England, and our petition for a Deposit Return Scheme for bottles, glass and cans received over 300,000 signatures and was recently accepted by the Government.” Globally, SAS are collaborating with likeminded organisations across the world to build a worldwide movement to change attitudes, behaviours and to build a reverse throwaway plastic culture. For more information on all SAS campaigns, environmental initiatives and opportunities to get involved, please visit the Surfers Against Sewage website.

GET INVOLVED! There are loads of things you can do to get involved with SAS and make a difference wherever you are: • Join a beach or river clean, or even do your own #MINIBEACHCLEAN • Lead a Plastic Free Community • Download your Individual Action Plan to say goodbye to avoidable, single-use plastic • Become a member, volunteer or fundraise for SAS Every penny you raise will help fund projects to protect UK coastlines.
