The Barn at the Rod and Line Tideford The Rod and Line has been a public house since 1678, renowned for its quirky, timeless interior, the quality of its locally sourced food, the clarity of the beer and of course the character of the landlord. To the side of the pub is a barn that until recently sat almost derelict. However, in January 2018 work began to transform it and since, it has been lovingly and gently restored. Today, The Barn boasts three luxury rooms with en-suite bathrooms, including stand-alone bathtubs, a disabled friendly suite and family room, all with com limentary i i, et i and organic Cornish toiletries from Tevarno. Three prestigious awards for Cornwall’s first all-suite hotel!
Only a handful of TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards are given out each year, going to hotels that go the extra mile to provide their guests with the best, in terms of both service and accommodation. Falmouth’s Oceanic Suite Hotel – a luxurious getaway exclusively for adults – has received not one, but three of these prestigious awards for 2018, ranking in the ‘Top 25 Best Small Hotels in the UK’ (the Oceanic is third!), ‘Top 25 Best Romantic Hotels in the UK’ and ‘Top 25 Best Small Hotels in Europe’. Unsurprisingly, owners Tim and Heather are delighted. “We have only been open for four years and are stunned to have won these awards, especially in multiple categories. We cannot thank the TripAdvisor community enough for all their kind feedback and recommendations.” The ceanic uite otel blends five-star facilities with stylish apartment living,
offering five e clusive, designer suites. ndeed, Tim, Heather and the team have set a new standard in the Cornish accommodation industry, providing a personalised service so that each of their guests gets the most out of their stay. Set in the heart of Falmouth, only a few minutes’ walk from the beach or the harbour with its vibrant mix of bars, restaurants and live music, this fabulous hotel enjoys spectacular views, which guests can enjoy whilst sunbathing on a giant grass bed, or relaxing in the giant wooden hot tub. Is it time to have that conversation? As tranquil as visiting Cornwall is at this time of year, it’s hard to feel at peace when we carry our worries with us, as Jane from Highgate found when she realised her husband’s drinking had got out of hand. “ t s often clearer, sooner, to the eo le around us when alcohol or other substances have become a di culty, says Gerri Creedon of private rehabilitation centre Regain Recovery, Devon. “The best time to talk about it is today. t s always

Enjoy a foodie break this winter
with Rick Stein’s During the winter, Padstow is delightfully comfortable. Cream Cornwall goes from strength to strength Rebecca Heane and Alison Hughes founded Cream Cornwall in 2012 after discovering a shared passion for creating products evocative of Cornwall that were tasteful, high quality and made in Britain. After a day exploring the north coast, nothing beats escaping to your luxurious, coastal inspired room, designed by Jill Stein. LUXURY We explore the changing face of self-catering and how stunning properties and amazing services are creating a real experience for the discerning guest.
W
e’ve all experienced that memorable week away in a holiday cottage... The furniture was shabby without the chic. Evidently the owners no longer deemed the threadbare sofa to be good enough for their own home, demoting it for others to use. Crockery and cutlery didn’t match – and why waste the good stuff on random strangers? All in all, it didn’t quite live up to those cleverly taken photos. The WiFi (if existent at all) was presented as a luxurious extra. Ultimately,
though, you’d put up with all these little quirks as part of the holiday’s charm and, anyway, it was just a base near the beach. That once may have been acceptable. But things have come on a long way in the selfcatering holiday market over the last decade or so. Perhaps it’s down to the rise of the staycation, with ever more people shunning the airport queues to enjoy a week away on home soil. People are becoming ever more discerning in their requirements, and faced with growing competition, the market is responding in kind.

Phil Gendall, of Forever Cornwall Unique Retreats, says: “We’re seeing a shift in expectation where luxury is the new normal. That’s always been the case at the high end of the holiday market but it’s now more universally true. TV shows from Grand Designs to Love Island expose potential customers to new aspirations, and social media gives an outlet for bragging rights.” These days, people expect more than just a base in a convenient location; they want the accommodation to offer a real experience in itself. Yes, we all want a home for home. But surely it actually has be better than home, otherwise why bother making the trip! George Edward-Collins of Cornish Traditional Cottages puts it neatly: “Gone are the days of providing the basics for guests coming on holiday. To keep guests coming back year in year out, you need to wow them and go above and beyond their expectations. With so much choice and quality rising in properties guests expect that, but they are also wanting to create experiences and memories and this is your chance to do that – you need to blow their socks off!” Emily Turner, Sales and Marketing Director of Perfect Stays, agrees. “The luxury holiday home market is very competitive and as a result, customer expectations and the quality of homes available are increasing year on year,” says Emily. “Guests are looking for the wow-factor. They expect outstanding facilities and completely unique features, from sensational views to indoor pools and high-tech cinema rooms.” So, with everyone upping their game, lu urious as ects are filtering down the market. Naturally, though, you can expect to pay a bit more for the top features, and it’s worth the additional expense if you can. What’s more, if you are renting a larger property – perhaps to bring friends and family together for a long overdue reunion – then the cost per person is often actually quite reasonable. Without the expense of ights to consider, it s worth investing a little
Gone are the days of providing the basics for guests coming on holiday
bit more into the accommodation to make it memorable for all the right reasons. For the foodies, the experience often starts as you o en the front door, as you find yourself greeted with a hamper crammed full of locally sourced delicacies – perhaps a Cornish cream tea of freshly baked scones, local jam and clotted cream. A sachet of instant hot chocolate and a couple of custard creams no longer quite cuts it! People want and expect luxury, but they also want convenience and accessibility. Style is essential, but not at the expense of comfort. It has to be practical and hard-wearing too. Guests want to relax without the fear of breaking family heirlooms – especially if they have young children with them. Those of us who’ve begun a holiday by moving an army of glass miniature figurines, anti ue vases and doilies onto the top shelf of the wardrobe (out of the prying hands of the over-active toddler) will know all about this.

Seaside luxury with Aspects Holidays
BELOW Fabulous interiors at Samphire Studio
Jenna Ali, of Aspects Holidays, says: “Many of our guests seek properties with additional features that they wouldn’t ordinarily have in their own homes. Our properties with sea views, hot tubs and other unusual features, such as an outdoor pizza oven, sell articularly well. e find that our guests enjoy the added luxury when on holiday.” Indeed, as Phil Gendall points out, “holiday cottages can’t all have the greatest sea views, but all owners can invest in better interiors and facilities.” This is evident in Sands and Samphire Studios, set in the heart of St Ives and run by husband and wife team Olivier and Angela Noverraz. Both have a background in running high-end hotels around the world and have now brought this experience and knowledge of luxury accommodation to their own properties. The studios are furnished to the highest standards and as Olivier explains: “ t s im ortant to us that we offer a five star service. We have discerning guests that visit from across the globe and we believe that a beautifully furnished property, with those little luxurious extras make all the difference. We also offer our guests a concierge service. It doesn’t matter that the properties are self-catering, we feel that this level of service is something that should be available to all guests.” So it’s clear that it’s not just the features and s ecifications of the ro erty that matter. More and more self-catering providers are recognising that it’s the services

offered that can make or break the entire experience. As a result, many are offering a full concierge service, with staff on hand to cater for any conceivable need. “Our customers want more than just a bucket and spade holiday, and require additional services from the moment of booking,” says Emily of Perfect Stays. “That’s why we offer an inclusive concierge service as standard, and frequently organise anything from private chefs to wine tastings, in-house massages and bespoke surf lessons. In fact, we often arrange a full week’s itinerary for our guests, complete with daily activities, restaurant reservations and transportation.” Indeed, a growing trend is hiring a personal chef to cook for guests inside their home – this can entail the full table service and a bartender, with even the washing up taken care of. Enjoy the best seat in the house and the region s finest ingredients, with a menu that’s tailored exactly to you and your guests. This is all about focussing on what really matters – catching up with family and friends, without one person perennially tied to the cooker or sink. Many guests are booking health and beauty treatments at their property. This could be a quick massage to relieve your back after a day in the surf or a full pop-up spa if the garden is big enough. Some opt to hire a nanny to look after the little ones for a few hours.

RURAL CORNWALL We discover the heart-warming beauty of some of Cornwall’s most rural countryside properties.
W
RIGHT The contemporary kitchen at Leat Barn BELOW Leat Barn's courtyard is perfect for summer barbeques
ith such an extensive coastline, Cornwall is often thought of as a county of traditional harbourside settlements and clifftop homes overlooking the water. However, owing to its low population density, the interior of the county is largely rural, with a landscape of farmland and ancient woods, dotted with peaceful villages and hamlets. We explore three properties currently on the market with Savills, which offer an escape to this idyllic rural lifestyle in the green centre of Cornwall. First of all we have The Barn at Leat Farm, a spacious, contemporary conversion of a traditional barn, set in a beautiful rural location near the village of Yeolmbridge, to the north west of Launceston. The Barn has six bedrooms in total, three in the main house and three in the annexe wing, along with two reception rooms – including a 26ft sitting room with a vaulted ceiling, an AGA in the kitchen, and a gym/hobby room. An eastfacing balcony overlooks the gardens at the front, while a west-facing balcony overlooks the courtyards and catches the soft glow of the evening sun. (Guide £850,000).

Leigh Manor Farm, a stunning Grade II listed Elizabethan manor house set in just over 5.5 acres of rolling countryside, is near the village of Week St Mary, in north-east Cornwall. Overlooking panoramic rural views, it s ust five miles from the coast. The main house has been lovingly restored by its current owners and retains its period charm, alongside more modern features. There are three bedrooms in the main house, and two reception rooms. A separate cottage has four bedrooms and two reception rooms; there are also two large barns, a listed cider house, former piggery and stables, plus the grounds also include a sand school and orchard.

Finally, The Farmhouse at Underwood Farm is an idyllic period farmhouse that has been extended and modernised to offer versatile accommodation across three oors. Set in a secluded location near Launceston, The Farmhouse has six bedrooms in the main house and a separate one-bedroom annexe, two reception rooms and a bright, airy kitchen with oor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gardens. There are about three acres of grounds, including a twoacre paddock and a level lawned garden surrounded by woodland. (Guide £850,000).
All of these properties are situated in peaceful and idyllic locations that offer a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of life, allowing you to nestle into the countryside and make the most of your stunning rural surroundings, with the added bonus of never being too far from the coast. BELOW Tredagon Spring, set in a fabulous plot overlooking Mawgan Porth beach
esigners and builders of new homes across the county are finding that an increasing number of clients are now requesting properties that have a low environmental impact, a reduced carbon footprint and reduced energy needs. These energy e cient homes are becoming more common as the products and technology required to build them are increasingly available to architects, designers and property owners. We explore three homes currently on the market with Savills that have been built with sustainability and environmental impact in mind. First is Chy Lyn, a bespoke family home built in 2012 and situated in the popular village of Mylor Bridge, near Falmouth. It has solar panels and geothermal heating, with thermostats for each room and expansive
glazing to maximise natural heat and light in the ro erty. t has five bedrooms, four of which have doors leading out to the garden, a fabulous first- oor o en- lan living area and kitchen with a glazed wall and doors leading onto a balcony that overlooks the wellstocked, mature gardens, private woods and two lakes. (Guide price: £950,000) Next we have Mawnan Reach, set on the edge of Mawnan mith, which is a wellserved village between Falmouth and the Helford Passage. Completed in 2015, it is a contemporary and highly individual detached house, with spectacular panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. All of the living areas have been oriented to take in the views, with oor to ceiling windows and sliding doors in the bedrooms as well as in the o en- lan living s ace. lus, an energy

(Guide price: £795, 000) Finally, set in a fabulous plot overlooking the beach at Mawgan Porth is Tredragon Spring, a contemporary beach house with sea views from most rooms, expansive living s aces, four bedrooms and two ad oining onebedroom apartments. It is a superb coastal retreat, designed to maximise the location with a minimalist chic, beach-style interior incorporating outdoor and indoor living. The s acious family room has full-width sliding doors onto the outdoor covered deck, and the first oor sitting room has an e ansive sun deck with panoramic sea, beach and coastal views. (Guide price: £3,000,000) All of these stunning properties combine innovative and e cient design techni ues
with a contemporary look. And, through using natural materials such as wood and brick, the houses blend effortlessly with their surroundings, promoting a sense of harmony with the environment that’s further enhanced through the incor oration of energy e cient heating and building solutions. teeped in history and in a superb setting near Mylor Churchtown, Porloe Farm is one of the most special and unique private homes in the Falmouth area. The house dates from 1763 and was built for packet ship Captain, Thomas Braithwaite, a ‘seaman of herculean proportions’, who lived a life of adventure on the high seas before eventually retiring to the peace and calm of Porloe. The present owners purchased Porloe Farm in 1994 and have since carried out thorough renovations, including the addition of a guest suite and bespoke conservatory in 2007. They haven’t, however, investigated claims of a secret passageway from the house to the creek, deciding instead to keep the mystery alive! This Grade II listed Georgian farmhouse sits centrally within its grounds and is approached by a long driveway. The main house is charming and quintessentially English, retaining original features throughout. n the ground oor there is a kitchen breakfast room with agstone ooring and an ga, drawing room, dining room, second kitchen/pantry, conservatory used as a second sitting room, boot room

Cosmopolitan retirement living in Truro, Cornwall’s cathedral city.
W
ABOVE Make the most of your golden years in Cornwall's cathedral city RIGHT Truro's Georgian architecture makes it a pleasure to explore BELOW Each apartment at Tregolls Lodge strikes a fine balance between design and functionality
hether you enjoy messing about on the river, sampling the best Cornish produce or simply relaxing and taking in breathtaking coastal views, we have found the ideal retirement location. Truro, with its narrow cobbled streets, grand Georgian architecture and charming coastal lifestyle draws an increasing number of visitors every year but it is also tempting many more retirees to settle there permanently. Located on St Clement’s Hill in the heart of the city, Churchill Retirement Living’s latest development, Tregolls Lodge, is a collection of 58 one and two bedroom apartments exclusively for those aged 60 and over. Many apartments feature balconies with views of the striking Truro Cathedral that dominates the city skyline. All apartments are completely self-contained with their own front door, providing you with privacy and peace and quiet when you want it. There is a choice of one and two bedroom apartments that both have spacious rooms throughout and an ideal combination of design and functionality. The fully fitted, stylish kitchens include a built-in fridge and freezer, hob, an oven, which is located at an easy-reach height, and a washing machine. Tiled shower rooms come as standard, while some have separate en-suites and cloakrooms as well. Master bedrooms have fitted mirrorfront wardrobes as well as television and telephone points and all of the properties benefit from illuminated light switches for added convenience – even the smallest details are taken care with everything designed for ease of use. Retirement should be all about making life easier so there is plenty of time to relax and enjoy living. The development is looked after by Millstream Management Services, a specialist property management company so that everything from fire and security monitoring and building insurance to window cleaning are all taken care of. The beautifully landscaped gardens and communal areas at Tregolls Lodge are looked after by a Lodge Manager giving you peace of mind that they are being maintained by the experts and are always looking their best. With less to worry about, owners have more time to do the things they enjoy, including taking advantage of the host of other benefits that are on offer including having family or friends to stay in the development’s wellappointed guest suite, enjoying a chat with neighbours, or attending one of the many events in the Owners’ Lounge.
For many, moving house to somewhere new can be very daunting and unfamiliar, particularly when you’re in your 80s; but for Peter Fazakerley his move to Tregolls Lodge in Truro took him back down memory lane, to somewhere rather more familiar. Peter has put his stamp on many areas of Cornwall, during his illustrious career as a quantity surveyor for Cornwall Council, but Tregolls Lodge on St Clement’s Hill has quite a connection. Peter explains: “For many years I was the chief quantity surveyor for Cornwall Council, and was involved in many special projects throughout the county. In fact, I was involved with the build of the original police station on St Clement’s Hill where Tregolls Lodge now stands. It seems like fate that has brought me here now. “Tregolls Lodge was the first retirement complex I viewed and I was really pleased with the facilities at the lodge, and the lifestyle on offer. It’s so close to all the local amenities, and it’s easy for me to just walk to the shops – something I was never able to do before.” Truro has an excellent selection of high street retailers, independent boutiques and a lively café culture all within easy walking distance of Tregolls Lodge. A short drive will take you to the stunning Roseland Peninsula, one of the most picturesque and unspoilt parts of the country where you can discover secluded bays, magical creeks and enjoy a quieter pace of life. So if you are looking for a retirement property that will leave you time to live the Cornish lifestyle to the full then Tregolls Lodge could be for you.

Working with outdoor holiday specialists, Canopy & Stars, Life Space Cabins advises clients on how they can maximise their return on investment, with one top tip being that 70% of a cabin’s rental income is generated outside of July and August. This demonstrates the demand throughout the year definitely worth bearing in mind if additional income is your goal! Life Space Cabins Founder, Jamie Wilson is keen to ensure that his clients receive a bespoke service right from the start. The team will guide you throughout the entire process, from the initial site visit and design, to ensuring you remain on budget. He tells us: “Cost is not a taboo subject and we believe in giving our clients the information to make the right choices for their project and budget.” The company also offers a sense of fun, which Jamie explains is a key difference between Life Space Cabins and other, similar businesses. “When starting Life Space Cabins we wanted our clients to enjoy the entire process, incorporating fun and dynamic features that re ect the client and our own quirky thinking!” Jamie’s interest and, indeed, passion for small s aces was first i ued during his six-month tour of Europe almost a decade
ago, when he and his wife took their small campervan and headed south. “It was amazing how adaptable we became in our small space – it is one of our happiest times. Camping isn’t for everyone, but we all essentially enjoy that childhood love of ‘playing house’. Our cabins give you exactly that.” Jamie’s business partner, Martin Turner, acquired a piece of woodland in 2016 and set about building his own forester’s cabin, to which his family could escape at weekends. “My teenage boys can’t get internet or phone signal there so we really do spend time as a family!” Martin also has a diverse background, majoring in Catering Management, with some impressive institutions on his CV. He joined Jamie earlier this year, offering an unrivalled attention to detail, both in terms of practical skills and customer care. o if you think your lifestyle could benefit from the addition of a bespoke, luxurious small space, why not give Jamie and the team a call?

AWARD WINNING
ARCHITECTS
Introducing Lilly Lewarne Architects, building creative, honest designs with utmost consideration for the environment.
L
illy Lewarne is an award-winning architect business with over 25 years in practice. We hear from Directors Gill and James Moran, Gill tells us: “The in depth local knowledge we have and the appreciation of our beautiful surroundings is re ected in the creative and honest designs that we produce.” An example of Lilly Lewarne’s expert consideration is Quay House in St Mawes, this build stands testament to Lilly Lewarne’s conscientious approach to architecture, developing a home that blends seamlessly into its environment. The design of Quay House responds to its steep topography on the edge of a river, the lower level is submerged into the ground and it has a turf roof, which allows the building to merge with its surroundings with minimal impact on the visual beauty of the environment. vercoming lanning di culties, such as the impact that a building will have on its environment, whether that’s in natural surroundings or in a neighbourhood is Lilly Lewarne’s speciality. On the back of Neighbourhood Development Plans (NDPs) it has become increasingly di cult to be granted planning consent, Gill explains: “Neighbourhood plans decentralise planning decisions, putting decision making back in the hands of local people.” The consequence being that it is now increasingly di cult to gain lanning consent on new builds, however Lilly Lewarne are experts at overcoming these di culties and have ust finished a new build that is the first contem orary design to be granted planning permission after the adoption of the Roseland Neighbourhood Development Plan. James continues: “We have a high success rate of gaining consent, the permission was granted at appeal and this is due to the fact that we consider very carefully what should be taken to appeal, this comes down to an excellent understanding of planning legislation, and our understanding of contextual constraints and opportunities, as well as a thorough design and review process.” Therefore, anyone considering a new build or an extension where there is an NDP in place needs to be aware that these have
significant weight in the planning process at a local level, as such, it’s important to engage an architect with a good local knowledge, which Lilly Lewarne have in abundance. Lilly Lewarne Architects work closely with its clients to design homes that respond to topography and location, to create builds with minimal impact on the visual beauty of their environment and to blend into their surroundings, the result being stunning builds that make the most their location whilst also being conscious of the environmental impact that building homes has. orking on ro ects around Cornwall, we’ve done a bit of research and have discovered some of the stunning ro ects that this innovative company have worked on. Whether it’s a matter of completely rebuilding a home, such as Quay House in St Mawes which involved demolishing and rebuilding into something spectacular, they are experts at transforming spaces, always keeping in mind your particular requirements, and how to build with the utmost consideration to the environment.

n eye for colour and an instinct for everyday luxury is the hallmark of Roger Oates Design. According to the Roger Oates website, by combining practicality and an innate sense of classic design, this fantastic company’s rugs and runners are timeless examples of both heritage and innovation, offering a distinct level of exclusivity, being very selective on its retailers and installers. With more than 60 years of combined experience in the industry, Endurance Flooring, Truro is a business with family, professionalism and customer service at its core. When we met the team last year, they told us that they don’t just want to make a sale and sell as much ooring as ossible they want to offer each and every customer an experience, and we learned that what matters to the client is all that matters to them. Endurance Flooring backs a number of British manufacturers and brands, and the team often finds that clients have their heart set on a particular one before they even enter the store. Fortunately, more often than
not, it’s these top-end, exclusive brands that Endurance holds a contract for, allowing the team to both su ly and fit them. Roger Oates is one such brand. In fact, Endurance Flooring employs two Roger Oates accredited installers, who have been trained by Roger Oates’ own in-house installer in how to fit its rugs and runners, ensuring that the best finish is achieved each and every time, with the design that best suits each client’s home and requirements. Of course, Endurance Flooring is more than just an accredited Roger Oates supplier. In fact, it is one of the only companies in Cornwall to offer a full house fitting service. This means that, for instance, if you wished to lay hardwood ooring throughout your living s ace and then carpet the stairs and bedrooms, the team can take care of the lot, also offering discounts on full house jobs that require a range of different materials. It’s no wonder, then, that this fantastic local company has built such an excellent rapport with many of its customers.

ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE ARCHITECTURE We meet Ian Armstrong of ARCO2 Architecture, an inspiring Cornish company at the cutting edge of both design and sustainability. é ABOVE

W
ith a by-line: 'beautiful buildings that don’t cost the earth,' the ARCO2 Architecture team emphasise that their projects are both cost effective and environmentally aware. Director Ian Armstrong tells us: “ARCO2 don’t just build you a dwelling or o ce, we create homes with benefits to enhance your lifestyle literally building homes for future generations.” This building approach is evident in the creation of ‘Mellalue’, an outstanding coastal property designed and built by ARCO2’s inhouse construction company. When creating and building this remarkable property, the ARCO2 team worked closely with their client to achieve their vision to the highest possible standard, whilst also taking into consideration the impact on the surrounding environment and neighbours. Ian continues: “as a RIBA Chartered Architects Practice we have a unique, innovative and human approach to design which is evident in this stunning house.” The new dwelling replaces a mid-20th century bungalow, which was of little architectural merit and didn’t make the most of the beautiful site. ARCO2 stepped in and with a brief from the client to construct a low
energy, contemporary home that could accommodate a family with teenagers and elderly parents, the team made moves to construct this impressive property. Ian emphasises that: “one of the key design considerations was to retain the sea views for the neighbouring building behind and improve their outlook.” With this in mind, the house was designed with a curved roof to maximise space, minimise impact and enhance the neighbour’s perspective. Ian continues: “It’s one of the most sustainable dwellings in terms of building fabric and energy usage in the area, and demonstrates that a strong but simple design concept can be really striking.” So, if you want to create a beautiful home with minimal impact on the environment, then get in touch for your free consultation and make moves to secure yourself a home and help secure the planet for future generations.

or many of us, our kitchen is the heart of the home, it’s where our families congregate at the beginning and end of the day, where numerous cups of tea are made and stories told and often, it’s the deal-breaker when buying a property. Creating a bespoke and beautiful kitchen is a dream for many of us, and Arnold’s Kitchens has the skill and craftsmanship to make that dream a reality. Run by husband and wife team Leigh and Arnold Van Den Dolder, Arnold’s Kitchens is the brainchild of these two incredibly creative individuals. Having met at university when Leigh was studying textiles and printing and Arnold was studying cabinet making, the pair combined their creative talents to design and make bespoke, handcrafted kitchens. Leigh tells us: “Kitchens seem to be the room of a house that’s most important to people and can often end up being the biggest project, we absolutely love the challenge of balancing functionality and style as well as our clients' articular s ecifications and re uirements. Arnold’s Kitchens is one of only three UK companies that cast worktops exclusively in-situ, creating seamless worktops, as well as concrete shelves, cupboards and sinks, resulting in a highly olished finish and an industrial effect that achieves a bold look when paired with reclaimed lighting and utilitarian co er or brass ta fittings. However, Leigh tells us: “The industrial look is still extremely popular but we’re now seeing a return to natural textures and refined raw materials. The two styles totally complement each other, with the warm wooden tones playing against the cool concrete. rnold s itchens really is a keystone in kitchen design; the company stands out for its innovative approach and creativity, and here at Cornwall Living we absolutely love the rustic effect and imaginative use of concrete, as well as Leigh’s expert skill with marrying different textures and patterns.
| HOME A creativity that is perhaps enhanced and cultivated through their base here in Cornwall, a rugged and wild landscape that has inspired countless generations of artists which is definitely how we erceive these two makers and shapers – their kitchens are nothing short of art installations and their life here in ornwall massively in uences and promotes their creativity. Arnold tells us: “We’re very outdoorsy people, with lots of interests such as surfing, s earfishing and cold water swimming and this has made us into seriously hands-on creative types, we’re not afraid to get really stuck into a project, just like we’re not afraid of what lurks beneath the cool Cornish waters. We embrace and relish a challenge and love bringing our adventurous side into our designs. s a re ection of their fearless approach to exploring Cornwall’s coastline, Arnold and Leigh aren’t afraid to push the boundaries with design and have conse uently created some truly stunning kitchens from here all the way to London. The company are also intrinsically aware of their impact on the environment and will choose reclaimed timber and locally sourced materials in favour of other less sustainable roducts, thereby creating uni ue and individual designs that stand out whilst also reducing their environmental impact. Arnold continues: “We love experimenting with various raw materials to achieve something different, and that s what lies at the heart of what Arnold’s Kitchens is all about – experimenting, creating and designing kitchens that are incredibly uni ue and outstandingly beautiful.

RESIDE
WATERSIDE Introducing Waterside Cornwall, a new and improved luxury Holiday Park based in an utterly idyllic location. ABOVEé Waterside has undergone an impressive renovation INSET A flavour of Cornwall at Three Lakes Restaurant
N
estled in rolling countryside a few miles from historic Bodmin, Waterside is made up of luxury self-catering lodges woven skilfully into more than two hundred acres of lakestudded parkland, and is blessed with worldclass facilities. Up until last year, despite its idyllic location and relaxed charm, Waterside was not all it could be. Now, as it comes to the end of a plan of improvements which have been as sensitive as they are extensive, the resort has cemented its place not only as an ideal base for guests to relax and explore Cornwall, but also as a cornerstone of the local community. Waterside’s Director Ian Slater tells us: “When I started here in early 2017, it was clear there were so many more things we could do.” As he walks around one of the stylish Nordic inspired lodges – almost hidden from its fellows by mature trees – and towards the main building, Ian explains: “A big part of the transformation was to be mindful of our impact on the environment whilst still expanding what we offer.” With this in mind, local produce is served in the onsite Three Lakes Restaurant, with seasonal menus packed full of locally sourced ingredients. Single use plastics have been rejected in favour of recyclable
alternatives and, after an ecological survey, Waterside now affords a status as a ite of ecial cientific nterest thanks to the complete understanding of the native wildlife that can be seen around the resort. “Our aim is to create a relaxing place to enjoy Cornwall, whether you’ve come from the other side of the world or the other side of the valley,” Ian says as we walk into the striking café and reception area, where an early lunch buzz rises from couples and families. Although summer is barely behind us, the team have already been taking Christmas bookings. “We’ve always had our fair share of early bookings, but with the new menus and refreshed events spaces, Christmas is filling u fast, roving that aterside really is a place for all seasons. Don’t take our word for it though – get in touch today and experience the Waterside luxury for yourself.

F
or Selina and Jason, founders of Trecombe Lakes, moving to Cornwall was a completely new chapter. Moving from east Sussex with three young boys, the pair had no idea where they were going to live or what they were going to do, however they knew that they wanted to launch their own business within the travel industry. After a long search, and after losing one property when it fell through the day before exchanging, the couple came across some land and lakes near Constantine. “We went to have a look on a cold wet day in March . t was a nightmare to even find as the whole site was overgrown and to start with, we totally discounted it as an option as it looked like too big a job.” Around this time they decided to take a family break, staying in a camping pod. Roughly the size of a four-man tent, they had to bring all their own camping equipment, which, with three young boys, involved a lot of gear! “This got us thinking about designing our own fully-equipped pods that would be large enough to fit a kitchen and separate bathroom. We revisited the overgrown site that is now Trecombe Lakes and decided ‘this could be the one’.”
Selina and Jason have a number of years’ experience running their own companies, and they’ve also done their fair share of camping, having had some good and some not-so-good experiences. “That’s why we think Trecombe Lakes works so well, as you can experience the whole ambiance of cam ing, with fire its and barbe ues, while having the comfort of a proper bed, your own shower and toilet!” The rest, as they say, is history, and even now, the pair strives to push the business forward. In fact, they recently announced the com letion of the first of si co Lakeside Lodges. This modular holiday home has been built with style, comfort and strong green credentials, and includes a log-fired wedish hot tub on the decking, giving visitors that extra-indulgent option, perfect for special occasions where you want to relax and rejuvenate in the pinnacle of luxury.

HOLIDAY HOME TIPS We discover the ins and outs of owning a holiday home in Cornwall from George Edward-Collins.
C
ornish Traditional Cottages are experts at providing quality selfcatering holiday accommodation to rent in exceptional locations throughout Cornwall. Therefore, Managing Director George Edward-Collins knows a thing or two about owning, renting and maintaining holiday homes. In this excerpt we discover George’s top holiday home tips, covering tax, cost considerations and how to maximise your earnings. First of all, what are the tax obligations for furnished holiday lets? oliday lets have s ecific ta arrangements that you need to be aware of and can even benefit from. n articular, furnished holiday lets Ls benefit from s ecific ta rules. To qualify as an FHL, your property must be within the , be furnished su ciently for occupation by guests and be intended to generate a rofit.
DID YOU KNOW? Cornish Traditional Cottages can put you in touch with property changeover management services (of varying levels), if this is something you require.
What cost considerations do you need to bear in mind if you own a holiday home in Cornwall? With buying Cornish property comes the associated mortgage, survey, stamp duty and solicitors’ fees that need to be factored into your budget. Buildings and contents insurance, and public liability cover are worth having as this covers you in the event of guests injuring themselves in your
property. During quieter weeks, you may need to refresh your property, so be sure to have a fund that covers these costs. Finally make sure to factor utilities into your fees, as guests like to pay an all-inclusive fee for their stay. The trick is to plan for these costs and have a rainy day fund to support them so that they don’t spring up when you’re least expecting them! How can you calculate and maximise your holiday home earnings? There are lots of things to factor in, however, it is possible to do some quick calculations to assess whether holiday home letting is for you. Access the rates of comparable properties based on: number of bedrooms, property type, location, and any additional luxurious factors, as these can all impact your rental rate. Plus, restrictions on short breaks during peak season is also a good idea because it means you can maximise income by limiting changeovers – so you don’t have to spend time and money cleaning your property and getting it ready for new guests.

LUNCH
Our top tips for a tranquil day spent by the coast in Mylor and the surrounding area, before relaxing at The Lemon Arms. ABOVE é The Lemon Arms boasts a wide selection of cask ales and lagers INSET Wild Cornish mussels steamed in white wine and served with crusty bread
S
ituated right next to Cornwall’s famous sailing waters, The Carrick Roads, Mylor is the perfect base from which to set sail and enjoy the buzzing atmosphere of Falmouth. Or, if you’d prefer a coastal stroll along the seafront then simply wander along to the Trefusis headland walk, a beautiful and scenic stroll towards lushing and erha s finish with a icnic on the beach and maybe even a leisurely swim. Then, after an invigorating stroll back to Mylor, we recommend seeking refuge and sustenance at The Lemon Arms in the heart of the village. Perfect if you’re staying in one of Mylor’s numerous holiday lets, The Lemon Arms is your typical village pub, with a tempting range of ales and lagers to refresh after your day by the coast, or on the seas! Sometimes it’s nice to ditch the car and explore on foot and Mylor allows you to do just that. Whether you’ve spent the day wandering along the coastal path or experiencing world-class sailing for yourself, there’s nothing better than returning to the comforting environment of a local pub for a relaxing pint in the sun. The Lemon Arms has a cosy and peaceful beer garden that you can enjoy in the
summer months and a warm, inviting log burner when the days start to draw in. We did a little digging and found this review from one happy customer who says: “Now there’s a pub! We walked to The Lemon Arms along the beautiful creek from Mylor marina. It feels like a real locals’ place, a great atmosphere with really friendly staff. I’d go back in a heartbeat.” t s always a win when you find somewhere with a great atmosphere and The Lemon Arms also has a wonderful seasonal menu to enjoy as well. We recommend the deep fried brie to start with a glass of red wine, and the Mylor butchers rump steak for a main with all the trimmings, then (if you’ve got space) treat yourself to The Lemon Arms signature Eton Mess! Don’t take our word for it though, head there for yourself and experience a true local Cornish pub.

ost of us know what we should be doing when it comes to weight loss, stress relief or stopping smoking, but few of us do it. This is the very real issue that Cornish based coaching practice Renewu addresses to help clients achieve and sustain long lasting changes. Renewu offers a range of options to clients: all inclusive five-day residential retreats, one-hour weekly coaching sessions face-toface or by hone , and intensive one-to-one residential programmes. Jill Wright, founder of Renewu takes a holistic view of body and mind. A key element to her approach is to look at people’s self-beliefs to identify those that are not helping her clients and holding them back from getting the results they want. This can be applied to any health and wellness goal, whether it’s weight loss, stopping smoking, boosting energy or reducing stress. By focusing on what clients see as the future versions of themselves, Jill helps them to make this a reality they can believe in and start to make happen now. Jill couples this with advice on how, when, why and what to eat. She does stress that this is not about dieting, but about eating a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner, introducing movement to their day and relaxation techniques. This sets them up for inevitable success and turns these healthy habits into behaviours that last.
ll coaching offers a safe, non- udgemental and nurturing environment for clients to start their transformational ourney. s well as e loring the self-beliefs and eating habits that hold people back from keeping off those extra pounds, the retreats include complimentary treatments and activities, such as re e ology, massage and movement, helping people to relax and unwind. Jill explains: “The changes that are introduced are simple and easy to sustain. I’m passionate that the experience should be en oyable and not tortuous. This is evident in the fact that Jill insists on serving what she calls ‘normal, everyday food’. “People should leave feeling refreshed, revived and committed to a healthier, more positive lifestyle. Clients are amazed at the impact the coaching has on all aspects of their lives they find they feel good about the way they look, which can strengthen their romantic relationships, and their confidence can give them the im etus to start to drive their career forward again. The boost in energy also means they have more quality time with their kids. The positive results are far reaching and long lasting.

If you’ve booked a holiday to the Isles of Scilly and are increasingly beginning to question your parking decisions, or the lack of them, then it s definitely worth planning ahead with Isles of Scilly Parking. The islands are such a beautiful place to visit; it’s worth getting your parking sorted so that you can relax with the knowledge that your car is safely parked in Penzance. There are two options with Isles of Scilly Parking; either choose Premier parking which is in the closest possible proximity to the Scillonian – only a stone’s throw from the quay. Or, choose the value for money Standard parking that’s only a four-minute drive away and is served by a regular shuttle service. The shuttles are spacious and comfortable and will drop you straight to
the quay, so there really isn’t much between the two options. Either way you’re sure to be able to park your car in a safe place and get to the quay in good time. In relation to their experience one customer has said: “Thank you so much for the superb assistance. Your company is one of the best I have ever experienced in 50 years of living in the UK.” Proof that planning ahead with your parking really will put your mind at rest, especially when the team at IOS are so helpful in making sure that your travel experience is as stress free as possible.

ABSOLUTE
ETHICAL LUXURY Introducing KinetIQue’s unique lab grown diamond, 30% tougher and even brighter than mined diamonds.
C
ornish company KinetIQue Jewellery are forerunners in the cultivated diamond industry, creating an ethical and luxurious alternative to mined diamonds. The IQ Diamond is truly unique, as its core can only be found naturally from an exploding star; its complex make-up and ethical credentials led it to be named the iamond, and it has firmly been put on the world map as a multi-award winning diamond. KinetIQue introduced the original IQ iamond four years ago, it was the first hybrid diamond to be sold in the UK and has proven to be extremely popular. As technology has moved on so too has the IQ Diamond, evolving into a stunning diamond option with greater lustre and more purity than most diamonds. Jason Foreman, who has a degree in Applied Chemistry, is the man behind the creation of the IQ Diamond. He tells us: “This business is something we’re truly passionate about. Every time we send a piece of jewellery set with an IQ Diamond to a customer we feel an immense sense of pride in its beauty and uniqueness – a KinetIQue diamond is the first hybrid diamond in the world to have a pure diamond mantle grown using Chemical Vapour Deposition Technology (CVD).”
Jason and his partner Elaine founded KinetIQue and their daughter, Emily has just joined the business. “As a company,” Elaine adds, “we want our customers to wear their beautiful IQ Diamond jewellery with pride and without any doubts as to their origin or any potentially unsavoury practices that may have been used to acquire them. We also want customers to be assured that their IQ Diamond will last a lifetime, just like a natural diamond.” KinetIQue specialise in creating bespoke pieces crafted using classical methods by a team of expert jewellery makers. Every aspect of each piece is carefully considered and responsibly sourced. KinetIQue use the finest recycled and fair trade metals available and other cultivated gemstones. As the socially responsible stone for today’s socially responsible buyer, the IQ diamond is the most diamond-like gem in nearly every aspect, but tougher, brighter and more affordable, meaning bigger, brighter stones without costing the earth, literally or metaphorically.
