A huge part of living in or visiting Cornwall has to be the fabulous coastline that draws people outside to work, rest and play. Whatever the weather, it’s an idyllic setting to lose yourself in. And if you’re keen for some fresh Cornish sea air, amazing views and pure relaxation, why not escape the stresses of everyday life with a touch of luxury? Cornwall promises a fantastic array of spas and wellbeing getaways in beautiful destinations, perfect to help you rejuvenate mind and body. If you like the idea of your own Cornish ‘bolt hole’ to retreat to, then buying a holiday home might be just the thing for you. I have wonderful memories of my parents’ holiday lodge – the children loved the freedom of exploring on their own! My parents would escape there for weeks on end to kick back and relax, Cornwall style. It was such a wonderful investment. Our Guide to Holiday Getaways suggests some of the benefits you, your family, and friends would get from a beautiful holiday retreat. With so much coast to explore, perhaps you are thinking of buying a boat? See our suggestions on what to consider. And if that isn’t enough, as well as some gorgeous properties for sale, we have lots of ideas for your own home, from stunning furniture to chic lighting. Cornwall, with its much celebrated produce and fresh seafood, is a foodie Mecca, so we give a taster of the delicious treats on the menu too. So sit back, relax, and get planning your next visit. Enjoy!

WELLNESS RETREATS If you’re keen for some fresh Cornish sea air, amazing views pure relaxation, here’s how to escape the stresses and strains of everyday life with added luxury.

C

ornwall is increasingly known for its fantastic array of spas and wellbeing getaways. And there’s a great variety on offer here, some catering for couples, some for families and all in beautiful destinations. There are even some that will travel to you! Here are some great ideas to help you rejuvenate mind and body.

CLIFFTOP ESCAPE Looking out to the horizon from the shimmering cliff-top pool, it’s hard to tell exactly where the pool finishes and the o ean begins. s far as romanti getaways go, it really doesn’t get much better. This is The Scarlet, an ultra chic, purpose-built and environmentally conscious hotel and spa, perched on the cliff on Mawgan Porth. In this setting, you can’t help but unwind. The way the site interacts with the landscape is a master stroke. Smooth curves and straight lines seamlessly blend inside and out, while an internal uncovered courtyard echoes a Roman villa from the future. The pool is chemical free, cleaned by the reeds. The whole place has been realised with luxury and comfort in mind, down to the very last detail. The Scarlet is a grown-ups only hotel, so there’ll be no screaming children next door. And that’s just as well, because a stay here feels almost like a spiritual experience, heightened by the array of treatments. The spa focuses on holistic wellbeing and every person’s experience is unique, with spa treatments

customised to suit the individual in question. Spa Operations Manager Caroline Cornish explains: “Our signature treatment is the Scarlet Journey, using Ayurveda as a lens to understand body and mind as a whole. And we totally tailor your time at the spa. t s not one si e fits all. Ayurveda is an ancient health system going back thousands of years. A key ingredient is marma point massage, which uses massage techniques to relieve pressure points, providing deep relaxation In the rhassoul, cake yourself in natural mud, rich in minerals, and follow this with a trip to the hammam, a Morrocan steam room (a bit like a Turkish bath). Or simply relax in the cliff-top hot tub. Caroline continues: “We offer a lot of space and time for people who don’t often have much of either. We’re right on the Coast Path, so you can literally wander straight out and enjoy a cliff top walk followed by a treatment in the spa – it’s all about resetting. And after a day of replenishment, the relaxation continues in the contemporary, stylish rooms, beautifully furnished. Each is unique and all boast the fantastic sea view and some outdoor space, whether a private courtyard or balcony. “It’s really lovely, that moment in the morning when you wake u , and o en the windows to the stunning view.

YOGA BREAK If you’re looking to revive in style and comfort, head to Costislost House, a luxury boutique B&B at Washaway, in lush countryside between Wadebridge and Bodmin. This fantastic getaway is run by couple Nick Meacham and Jane Parker, who founded North Cornwall Yoga. Combining Nick’s years of experience as a hotelier across the globe and ane s e ertise as a ualified nutritionist and chef, they offer short breaks and weekends for singles, couples and larger groups. The breaks are centred on a healthy eating, ashtanga yoga, meditation and sports. You don’t have to be a yoga expert or health fanatic. Nick says: “What we want to do is create a wellbeing hub, for everybody who wants do yoga and stay healthy. It’s really about everyone feeling better about themselves, and realising that living a healthy lifestyle can actually be enjoyable. “These are breaks rather than retreats; we’re not about retreating from the world, but embracing what Cornwall has to offer, from nature to waters orts. s well as yoga and meditation, you’ll be treated to activities that might include surfing, y ling the amel trail, wal ing a ross the moors, kayaking, and paddleboarding. On the Wild Cornwall weekend, you’ll experience foraging with resident expert, Rachel Lambert. And Cornwall really is the perfect location for

an adventure such as this. “It’s a beautiful stretch of coastline and woods, so it provides a fantastic range of edible plantlife, from seaweed and threecornered leeks, to berries and other plants from the hedgerows, says i . nd in the evening, you ll sample a delicious meal prepared by award-winning chef Jane using your day’s foragings. There’s a big focus on providing good nutritional food, and food that’s good for exercise. Jane is an expert on paleo, primal and pegan meals, all variations on a theme: essentially eating as naturally as possible, as our ancestors would, stripping out anything processed or modern. This means lots of native vegetables, seeds, berries and leaves, with fish and meat. t s what we eat normally, i explains. “It’s by far the best way to live, in my book. When you strip out all the processed foods, you get a balanced release of energy throughout the day, rather than highs and lows. I feel much healthier for this diet. And, what’s more, it’s really tasty! Although the food is stripped back, don’t expect to be sleeping on a mud oor. t ostislost House you will be living in ultimate luxury. The boutique rooms offer four-poster beds, en suite bathrooms, private seating areas.

More spa ideas...

Cornwall has a wide range of gorgeous spas. Here are a few we know well:

St Michael’s Hotel & Spa, Falmouth

Our editor Mandy describes this place as "blissful". She stayed overnight in June and enjoyed dinner, ESPA facial and leisurely breakfast, and has already booked her next visit! It has views, gorgeous gardens and a very talented team running the spa. www.stmichaelshotel.co.uk

St Ives Harbour Hotel

If you take a quick tour of the amazing views and facilities on the website, you can see why this is a firm favourite. It’s all about luxury here and wonderful ESPA treatments. www.stives-harbour-hotel.co.uk

Carbis Bay Hotel

The C-Bay Spa is the only spa in the UK with its own Blue Flag beach. This stunning coastal spa uses Voya and Aromatherapy Associates products, brands with an international reputation which fits the quality ethos of the hotel. www.carbisbayhotel.co.uk

Retallack Resort

The 5-star lodges at Retallack Resort were hired by the BBC for the Poldark cast and crew. The resort near Wadebridge and Padstow has it all, and the Retreat Spa is no exception, using Decleor and Thalgo products and offering great packages. www.retallackresort.co.uk

Watergate Bay Hotel

The hotel has three treatment rooms and focuses on a fuss-free approach to getting results. During the summer, and of course, dependent on the weather, have a beach massage where you can really take in the view! Enjoy a 30-minute massage of your choice on the hotel terrace overlooking the sea. www.watergatebay.co.uk

THE AT -HOME SPA We’ve just looked at some relaxation getaways in breathtaking Cornish locations. But how about a luxury spa that comes directly to you? Afyna means ‘to beautify’ in Cornish, so it’s a particularly apt name for a novel venture making waves across the county. Afyna Spa is an opulent mobile spa that can pop-up within minutes of arrival at any destination from Padstow to Polzeath. This is the brainchild of Sara Young. Having successfully run a chain of spas including the spa at the St Enodoc Hotel, Sara created her own award-winning range of organic skincare products. She also discovered the need for a quality pop-up spa that comes direct to your door. In a short time, it has already proved to be a real a hit with her new customers. “It’s a great way for people to enjoy luxury spa treatments without the fuss – perfect for families with young hildren, who an t find the time for a trip out to the spa. We bring everything to you And everything means everything, from heated couches to heated towels, for the ultimate in indulgence. “We can go inside, or pop up the spa in your garden when the weather s good.

If you’re renting a cottage or glamping, that’s no problem either. All you need is a little bit of space, access to water and a power supply. And for a premium service, prices are very reasonable too. If you’re planning a special pamper party or hen do, this will delight. And a growing market is festivals and events. They’ve done Port Eliot Festival, employing six in the team over four days. The focus is very much on luxury, centred on facials and massage, using Afyna’s own award-winning range of products. Afyna’s unique treatments include a detoxifying Cornish seaweed facial. Seaweed handharvested straight from the Cornish coast is combined with other natural ingredients including Cornish clay. If this sounds tempting, you can order them straight after the treatment, with a 10% discount, posted out to you. So if you don’t want to travel to the spa, let it travel to you in the comfort of your home.

ncasta International Boat Sales has been operating from Falmouth, Mylor, Plymouth and Dartmouth for almost 35 years. Throughout this time, the company’s passion for being on and around boats, supporting local sailing clubs, marinas, boatyards and events, has kept it closely linked with Cornwall’s sailing community. Ancasta is Europe’s largest brokerage network with a global presence and local nowledge, ba ed u by o es in the UK, Portugal, Spain and France. “Ancasta’s success is based on giving our clients a local window to a global world,” says Simon Boote, Managing Director, Ancasta International Boat Sales - West Country. Ancasta is the UK’s leading agent for

Beneteau Sail and Power, Lagoon Catamarans, Prestige Luxury Motorboats and CNB yachts, so if you’re keen to purchase a new or used luxury yacht or power boat in Cornwall, the local experts are on hand to help.

Size does matter The Internet is a powerful tool. However, it does mean that any brokerage can present itself as something it is not. A website and a sign-written van is not an international yacht brokerage. Scale affords Ancasta many advantages, not least a huge and varied portfolio. But, equally, it’s the unparalleled experience, built up over many years in the industry, which sets the company apart from more recent upstarts. A yacht is a big investment and this experience as an industry leader ensures quality advice from knowledgeable professionals.

Confidence Buyers value security. “Our size enables us to list and sell more boats than most brokers, but it s the rote tion that omes from ualified staff, best working practices such as an insistence on dedicated client accounts that is the real value of working with Ancasta,” says Tara Donovan Soltys, Regional Brokerage

Manager. When making a purchase on this scale, it pays to opt for a respected agent and protect that investment. Buying and selling through a recognised broker is key, whether in finding a boat you ll love forever, or finding your beloved boat a new home.

Online reach Ancasta’s longevity means that it has been at the forefront of the Internet revolution, operating one of the yachting industry’s premier websites. In fact, its site has more than 60,000 visits per month, and it feeds out to top national and international brokerage sites. So if you want to sell your yacht, a listing with Ancasta immediately exposes it to an international audience. “We are really proud of our client and boat management software and our ability to match listed boats to clients is key to our success,” adds Tara.

A network A key element in Ancasta’s success is its o e networ . ts o es have real time access to all the group’s listings and clients. “This dramatically increases the coverage that each boat receives or the access that each buyer enjoys,” explains Tara. “Our ability to bring together local knowledge with our national and international coverage is second

to none. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in the West Country where for almost 35 years we have been operating out of Mylor, Falmouth, Plymouth and Dartmouth.”

A personal touch While a boat is a big investment, it is also a thing of joy, providing lasting memories for you and your family to cherish forever. As sailing enthusiasts and boat owners, the team at Ancasta understands the pleasure a boat can bring and what makes it special.

People The Internet has the power to put buyers and sellers together, but the more the industry evolves, the more critical it becomes to work with ualified, rofessional bro ers. n an essentially unregulated environment, adhering to the highest possible standards of professionalism counts for a great deal. Buyers will pay to have good paperwork because there is a cost in having poor paper work: it may and should prevent a sale.”

oat owning is all about pleasure. It’s also one of the largest purchases you are likely to make, in one of the most unregulated environments. The guiding principal is: buyer beware! We have lots of advice to ensure boat ownership stays fun, but keeping it simple, the three essential tips are: do your research, use a ualified bro er and use a ualified surveyor and engineer.

Research Firstly, get plenty of experience to help decide what the boat has to do for you. Power or sail; new or used; day boat or family cruiser? Boats depreciate, require maintenance and need somewhere to park. So get the right boat for the right price and understand the costs involved to maximise the fun and minimise the risk. Limit your downside by considering future saleability. Keep to well-known brands, go for the newest rather than the largest boat you can and make sure you have good title!

Use a qualified broker This is a big, complex and potentially risky purchase, with no mandatory central registration. So employ a reputable broker who is a member of the Association of Brokers and Yacht Agents (ABYA), and therefore ideally placed to guide you through the process, discuss your needs and show you numerous boats.

ualified bro er will now the mar et and can advise on offers the vendor may accept, as well as helping with berthing, finan e and insuran e. hey will also be fully familiar with all the processes, paperwork and other necessary requirements. Using a ualified bro er an revent the otential pitfalls of private transactions, putting safeguards in place to protect both yourself and the vendor.

Use a surveyor The emphasis is on the buyer to protect themselves. Always make any offer subject to a survey and/or an engineering inspection, using a professional surveyor who is a member of Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA) or another recognised body. sing a ualified marine engineer to conduct engine inspections is strongly recommended, especially when purchasing powerboats. t’s true, we’re forever extolling Cornwall’s virtues. But there’s good reason! We challenge you to find anywhere else with golden beaches, rugged cliffs, river inlets and bewitching moorland all within a stone’s throw of each other. No wonder its stunning landscapes and incredible coastline are the muse of many writers, artists and photographers. When Carla Regler moved to Porthleven, she found herself beguiled by the area’s natural beauty, and started photographing the landscape, soon building up a local reputation, before reaching global acclaim for her now widely celebrated shots of the great storms of 2014. Whether visiting or lucky enough to call Cornwall home, there’ll be moments you want to cherish forever. And with Carla’s help, you can improve your photography skills and get those perfect shots too. The award-winning photographer runs a range of relaxed but comprehensive courses, workshops and one-to-one sessions, giving you a solid grounding in photography, both on-location and in post-production. There are many things you can learn in order to hone in on the craft, not least which bits of kits you’ll need. Sometimes a smartphone simply won’t cut it, but you’d don’t have to break the bank to create stunning images of your own. As Carla explains, “High resolution SLR

cameras are getting more affordable and take fantastic shots, so great photography is becoming more accessible for all.” Why not join Carla for a residential on the Lizard in November? “We’re very lucky to have so many fantastic locations on our doorstep,” notes Carla. The Lizard Peninsula abounds with rugged beauty, and is dotted with beautiful ancient villages and harbour communities, from Cadgwith to Coverack; the perfect backdrop for a residential photography course. Staying at The Mullion Cove Hotel, an impressive building perched high on the clifftop overlooking the ocean, it’s the ideal base from which to explore the beautiful surroundings. Places can be booked directly through the hotel, by phoning 01326 240328 or visiting the website: www.mullion-cove.co.uk. Carla’s workshops are open to photographers of all abilities and she tailors the time around you. She takes her courses all around the world too. So if you fancy trying your photography even further afield, arla is lanning an ama ing talian venture soon. For more information, visit Carla’s website, then get snapping!

nergy-packed and beautiful. That’s what has been said about the artworks of Steve Slimm, who has been producing exceptional oil landscapes since 1979, with no sign of slowing up. A deep passion and unique expression of Cornwall’s landscape shines clearly through all his work. Steve, who studied for a short while under the late John Miller, cites the great seascape painter Turner as an inspiration and has been featured in UK art foundation courses for his quality of light. He began his fruitful career of over three decades wandering from door to door, showcasing his work to anyone who was prepared to take a look. He soon began to make a living and built a growing following, helping him become established in galleries throughout Cornwall and the UK. Steve chooses to explore themes for his paintings around Cornwall and further afield, whether it be the rugged oastline or enchanted moorlands, focusing on the lay of the land with little or no interference from man. teve has no la of o ularity, finding excitement in new and upcoming exhibitions and galleries to supply. “There is always a sense anticipation, expectancy

and even fun – along with timidity with new ventures”, he explains. Steve’s drive is heightened by personal contact with clients, discussing their personal connection and draw to a particular piece and realisation of common ground. Irene Woodhead from Penryn found that common ground with a piece called ‘Towans’ from the Claremont Gallery. “The beauty has arrived, and we are gazing and gazing!” Irene says. “It really is an excellent painting and we are thrilled and honoured to be able to enjoy it every day”. Steve adds: “I probably get more of a sense of fulfilment seeing my wor so well appreciated, than actually painting it in the first la e Steve’s extraordinary work can be seen in a number of galleries in Cornwall and elsewhere in the UK. He also runs private exhibitions online for his followers on his mailing list, so why not sign up now to see his latest creations?

Back to nature Plot the perfect getaway with North Coast Holiday Cottages.

ometimes, you just need to get out of the city and into the open, rolling countryside. And what better escape than under Cornwall’s clear skies, near the coast and surrounded by nature? North Coast Holiday Cottages in Portreath present the ideal sanctuary, nestled snugly in the stunning ornish lands a e. he field started life as grazing ground and within the space of 14 months became the fully landscaped grounds we have now”, Head Gardener Kierin explains. “Plants have been carefully selected for their resilience to the sea air environment and are commonly associated with Cornwall.” Natalie Martin continues: “Kierin has his own greenhouse, enabling you to enjoy fresh salads, grown on site and sold in the shop. Our crystal lemon cucumbers are a favourite, now the autumnal vegetables are getting ready to be picked.” The retreat has also been harvesting delicious crispy apples and sweet pears. There’s plenty to keep the children entertained: “We have our own animals here, including six llamas with two baby llamas, Jaz and Flo. We also have chickens, with fresh eggs available in the shop.” And if you’re a dog lover, you’ll be glad to know your four-legged friend is very welcome too! “We know how important dogs are to many,” says Natalie, “which is why we invite them on holiday too.” The jaw-dropping views change throughout the year, taking on a different atmosphere as various plants come into their own. But regardless of season, it’s the perfect retreat in which to while away the time, simply watching life pass by. “This is a truly special place for a relaxing short break from the big city, or for a family holiday of walks and the great outdoors,” says Natalie. “A true, luxurious home-from-home experience.” She continues: “You may have neighbours, but you wouldn’t think so. Each cottage is private, while enjoying those stunning views. Whether chilling out on the sofa or in the jacuzzi outside, you’ll feel completely revitalised.” Being so close to the sea is another fantastic plus point. Having lapped up the stunning panorama, take a stroll to the dramatic north oast. urfing and addle boarding are ever popular over the summer, while the autumn and winters months are always spectacular times for strolling the coastal path.

ost visitors who make the trip to our beautiful county of Cornwall surely end up leaving with the dream of owning a luxury second home here, to visit over and over, time and time again. It’s hardly surprising when a holiday home in Cornwall comes set in stunning countryside as standard, sandwiched between two diverse and beautifully rugged coastlines, laced with beaches and scenery that’s unsurpassed in beauty. Not to mention the abundance of quality produce, from land and sea, whether cooked at home or prepared in one of the many top eateries countywide. Cornwall and its unique lifestyle offer so much more than a holiday home; all the more reason to make residing in or visiting Cornwall less of a dream and more of an actual reality! One dilemma you’ll almost certainly face when looking to purchase a holiday home will be deciding which part of the county you’d like as your ‘home from home’.

From luxury spas and gymnasiums, children’s play areas and sports activities, to top restaurants and bistros, there’s really something for all the family. Stay

If you’re looking for the flexibility of a selfcatering holiday minutes from the beach, The Park at Mawgan Porth is just the answer.

S

ummer is over, and autumn has arrived in Cornwall. The roads are emptier, the beaches quieter and, while the evenings draw in, the sea is warmer and temperatures during the day tend to be milder than the rest of the country: perfect conditions for a trip west. The Park at Mawgan Porth is situated in spectacular surroundings. Opened in 1963 on the site of an ancient sand dune, the high-spec holiday village comprises 27 acres of coastal woodland, all just a stone’s throw from sandy Mawgan Porth beach and the South West Coast Path. Catering for all tastes, The Park is an equally great spot for a fortnight with family and friends as it is for a romantic weekend away. CHOOSE YOUR RETREAT With accommodation ranging from lodges and beach houses, to 1950s Air Stream caravans and Mongolian yurts, you have plenty of choice. The Park’s eco-terraces can sleep up to 12 and are ideal for bigger groups. The Park’s Yurt Village is popular with couples and groups of friends, and you can understand why. For those who like the idea of camping, but are less keen on the reality of sleeping bags and ground sheets,

this is camping at another level. The beautiful Mongolian yurts, sleeping two or four people, are fully furnished with comfy beds, TVs and individual wood burners. Guests have access to a hot tub, barbeque facilities, a yurt ‘living room’ and a fully-equipped communal kitchen, as well as The Park’s wider facilities. Guests are invited to make use of the heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools. For those looking to relax, we recommend the sauna and steam room, and children are encouraged to let off steam in the toy filled lay ar . The Park Café is open to both residents and guests. Here you ll find a wel oming spot for a full Cornish breakfast, or dinner if you don’t fancy cooking. Open from 8am through to supper and evening drinks, the café serves up hearty meals including delicious burgers, sharing platters and lo ally aught fish and hi s. lternatively, grab a moment mid-morning and relax with a coffee and a piece of homemade cake. SURF, WALK AND EAT The Park is just a couple of minutes walk away from Mawgan Porth beach, popular with surfers. Brush up on your technique at ingsurf, offering surfing lessons for all ability levels.

Many of The Park’s properties are dog-friendly, so no one needs to miss out on a family holiday. The Park Café welcomes dogs into its conservatory and the trails on site are ideal for early morning walks. Mawgan Porth and many of the other beaches on the north coast are dog-friendly all year round, making it even easier to explore.

Cornish food events

North Cornwall is a foodie paradise. There are some fantastic events coming up this autumn with chef demos, food stalls and entertainment. Three favourites include: The Boscastle Food, Art & Craft Festival (3rd-4th October), Fifteen Cornwall’s Winter Fayre (28th November), and Padstow Christmas Festival (3rd-6th December).

é ABOVE B eautifully furnished Eco-Terrace RIGHT Mawgan Porth beach

Neighbouring Watergate Bay and its expansive beach offers a range of watersports and great places to eat, including Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall. Popular Padstow is just a short drive north, and home to a number of other celebrated restaurants including Rick Stein’s The Seafood Restaurant and Paul Ainsworth at Number 6. Open all year round, in the winter months you can make the most of the log fires available in many of the ro erties, or jump into the hot tub after a busy day e loring or surfing. On warmer days, there are plenty of spots to relax and enjoy the sunshine. Whatever the time of year, you are guaranteed a memorable stay at The Park. Autumn breaks with yurt accommodation start from £80 per night. Eco lodges for up to eight people are priced at £200 per night.

Philip Warren and Son, Launceston’s esteemed family butcher, is supplied by its own farm and neighbours around Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor and the Tamar Valley. So you’re unlikely to find a clearer line from field to fork. When it comes to taste the team, serving Cornwall for an impressive 135 years, knows its stuff. Beef is fed on grass and matured on the bone – the traditional way, ensuring superior taste.

Prime Polzeath Own a slice of The Atlantic House, a stunning development on the north coast.

Fractional ownership explained

Often confused with timeshares, fractional or shared ownership differs in that buyers own a fraction of the property rather than the holiday time. Fractions can be freely sold and bought with the potential for the value to increase over time. Increasingly popular as a manageable way to purchase a holiday home, Atlantic House is offering a one-tenth interest in properties on a 999-year lease. This entitles owners to up to five wee s of holiday time each year.

S

et above the beach at New Polzeath in Cornwall with unobstructed sea views, The Atlantic House is a stunning holiday destination in an area famed for its world lass dining, surfing and spectacular coastline. The owners of The Atlantic House have invested over £4 million to create nine luxury beachfront apartments, 15 hotel rooms and an on-site bar and restaurant. The apartments are now available to buy on a fractional, sharedownership basis, with prices ranging from , to , for five individual wee s of holiday time each year. Named after Cornish beaches and coves, all of the fully-furnished apartments enjoy unrivalled sea views from private terraces or balconies, with eight featuring three bedrooms, and one two bedrooms. All are en suite. Owners an boo additional hotel rooms for larger groups, enjoying the same amenities including room service, fresh linen, laundry and cleaning services. Brothers Brian and Christopher holfield, together with wives, ulia and

Helen, are sta eholders in tlanti House. The property is a Cornish institution dating ba to the turn of the entury tourism boom of 1903. Brian says: “A lot of buying interest has ome from eo le who now the village and used to holiday at the former hotel. There’s a wonderful sense of marrying the old Polzeath with the new Atlantic House concept.” He adds: “The development has also prompted interest from those new to the area who see our scheme as an affordable opportunity to secure a beautiful property by the coast for themselves and to pass to their family in the future.” With over 50% of the fractions already sold, don’t miss out on the opportunity to secure your own coastal hideaway in Cornwall.

Welcome to

Whalesborough Cottages and Spa offers modern luxury set within beautiful countryside near Bude.

T

he Proudfoot family were dairy farmers, milking 300 cows before deciding to give up milk production to begin a 5-year development, removing all the former agricultural buildings and embarking on the construction of 21 holiday cottages, a café-bistro and a state-of-the-art leisure complex with indoor pool, gym and spa treatment rooms. All the cottages have been awarded 5-star Gold by VisitBritain and can sleep between two and ten eo le, roviding great e ibility for couples, families and large groups. The interiors have been lovingly designed, with lu urious tou hes su h as under oor heating, open plan living, granite worktops, oak doors, oor to eiling windows and wood burners to make Whalesboorugh a true all-year-round destination for that ultimate Cornish getaway. Surprisingly for a 5-star resort, Whalesborough offers holidays that are decidedly pooch friendly. Since the idea for a holiday development was thought of, the Proudfoots realised that Whalesborough’s 500 acres of land, situated between the Bude Canal (40 minutes’ walk into Bude),

the coastal path, and the Blue Flag beach at Widemouth Bay (30 minutes walk across the farm), made the perfect place for owners of dogs to come and relax with their beloved pets. The abundant space combined with many dog-friendly walks, beaches, pubs and restaurants nearby makes for an all BELOW round haven for dog owners and their A beautiful four-legged friends! Whalesborough also setting in the provides ‘Pooch Packs’: a crate, sofa covers, rolling countryside waste bags and doggy treats, to help you settle your pet in, not to mention the dog washing and drying facilities. Another rewarding feature of Whalesborough is its green credentials. Starting with a blank canvas, the family worked hard to ensure the impact on the environment was as minimal as possible, from the initial building onwards. A wind turbine and solar panels produce the electricity, while heat and hot water are provided by a woodchip and wood pellet boiler, using local sustainable wood sources and Whalesborough’s own managed woodland. Water is sourced from a borehole drilled deep underground whilst waste water is treated onsite and recycling is encouraged. ild ower meadows and new woodland have been planted with a network of trails put in place for you to enjoy. Perhaps the best thing upon arriving at Whalesborough is that you can enjoy a carfree holiday, walking or cycling to the local amenities or using the onsite facilities. The complex has won the prestigious

Michelmores Award for best Eco Project 2015, a testament to the efforts the Proudfoot family and its team have put in over the years. In addition, the W Club, a new indoor pool and spa open to local members and guests, makes Whalesborough a fantastic choice of destination whatever the time of year. So why not make use of the sumptuous pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steamroom and state-of-the-art gym with all the latest Technogym equipment Personal trainers are on hand to help you rea h your goals, and a timetable of fitness classes means you can have great fun while staying a tive and ee ing fit. Perranporth Pavilion on the north coast promises luxury homemade ice cream and fresh seafood, the perfect complement to a stay at Burrell’s Holidays.

I

t’s a beautiful day at Perranporth beach. With miles of sandy beach and crystal clear waters, the beach is buzzing with visitors and Perranporth’s very own luxury handmade ice cream parlour, Pavilion Ice, is understandably busy. But as the last days of sunbathing and sandcastles slowly draw to a close, Pavilion Ice owner and proprietor Matt Burrell is looking ahead to the upcoming season. “Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year. I can experiment with warmer, more filling dishes made with fresh roasted vegetables and local seasonal catches, like last year’s Day Boat Red Mullet which became especially popular with customers,” says Matt. For Matt, a new season also means new avours at avilion e as he uses lo al produce as inspiration for his Italian-style Cornish gelato. His newest creation of Cornish rhubarb and custard is freshly made on site after a bigger than normal fruit and veg delivery. “I was thinking of all the

There’s even a specially made range of dog friendly ice creams to give even the choosiest of dogs a chance to enjoy a beef, lamb or cheese ice cream on the beach. Next door to Pavilion Ice, Matt’s adjoining restaurant The Pavilion Boatshed offers a luxurious dining by the beach experience. The menu focuses on using locally sourced meats, seasonal produce and freshly caught seafood to reate tasty and fulfilling dishes that re e t the very best in ornish uisine. The restaurant itself is in a unique and intimate setting. On a sunny evening, customers can dine outside while overlooking Perranporth Beach. On cooler evenings, a glass panel is pulled across the front of the restaurant to keep the cold at bay while retaining the view. Matt, who was born and bred in Perranporth, returned to his hometown three years ago to set up the Pavilion Boatshed and Pavilion Ice. Matt is from a long line of entrepreneurs as members of his family have spent several years running shops and holiday accommodation, in and around Perranporth. After leaving his studies at college, Matt travelled to Sydney, to work in several Michelin-starred restaurants, including

working under the supervision of French Canadian Executive Chef, Serge Dansereau. But while Matt enjoyed his work in Sydney, it wasn’t the same as being at home. “I missed home and working with my family so after my parents suggested coming home to run a place of my own I couldn’t imagine doing anything else,” he says. After another successful summer, Matt is looking forward to seeing what the upcoming season has in store, both in terms of food and in business. He has teamed up with Burrell’s Holiday Lets to offer the ultimate foodie break in Cornwall. Guests at Burrell’s Holiday Lets are invited for dinner at The Pavilion Boatshed Restaurant where they will be greeted with a complimentary glass of Prosecco on arrival, followed by a handmade luxury ice cream from Pavilion Ice for dessert. This offer is the perfect way to enjoy Cornwall during the quieter months when its mild, sunny climate is at its best. Accommodation is now available in bea hside ats and houses. or further details, visit www.burrellsholidays.com and mention The Pavilion Boatshed Restaurant upon booking.

or most holiday home owners in Cornwall, the close of October half term week signals the end of the holiday letting season and the weekly schedule of changeovers and guests. Not surprisingly, it’s also the time to assess the impact that another season has made on the carpets, furniture and furnishings. For Lucie Howard, Creative Director of the HomeShed store and coastal Interior Design service Metamorphosis by Design, the renovation period between October and Easter is her busiest time of year. “Our in-house interior design service is more than a traditional design consultancy in that we really understand the importance of creating a coastal holiday retreat that captures the essence of the Cornish lifestyle,” Lucie explains. “We appreciate our clients’ needs, be ause we have firsthand e erien e of letting a holiday home and we know all the pitfalls,” she adds. Before moving into interior design, Lucie ran a marketing and PR agency for prestige designer brands in London. “I worked with over 30 leading designers, including Burberry, Jasper Conran and Versace – promoting these brands, designing press launch events and art directing photo-shoots – so I fully understand the concept of creating an aspirational lifestyle,” Lucie continues. “Ultimately, when choosing a venue for our summer holiday we’re all attracted by stunning interiors and spectacular views

– it’s about capturing the imagination of your prospective guest. Naturally, the more attractive the property, the more bookings will be generated and the happier your guests will be in their surroundings.” Where Metamorphosis by Design differs from other design companies is that they provide a full Interior Design Service, plus an American-style realtor (estate agent) service, which dresses your holiday home and directs the photo-shoots of the property to ensure that it looks at its most enticing to appeal to buyers. “In real terms what Cornish property owners are selling is a holiday lifestyle,” says Lucie. “Put simply, my remit is to renovate and design the interiors of coastal holiday lets in order to increase the potential revenue from clients’ lettings. We successfully tried and tested this with website images of our own villa in France and instantly saw an upturn in bookings, es e ially in the di ult low season eriods. For example, the table dressed for dinner in the photo shown here is the same table as the smaller inset image. Which table looks more inviting to you and which would you rather be seated at?” The mission of Metamorphosis by Design is to transform Cornish homes into coastal lifestyle properties on a minimal budget. “I love lean lines, raw unfinished wood and a relaxed style of living”, continues Lucie. “I’m talking about coastal chic, not nautical

chintz,” she emphasises. “The budget has to be sensible in rental properties as accidents inevitably happen and items will get damaged during the season. Furniture and accessories need to be cost effective and attractive, yet robust. To achieve the coastal look in the bedroom pictured here, I changed the feature wallpaper for a white sun-bleached wood effect paper, which is complemented by the white-washed wood beside lamps. The wallpaper is £32.95, the bedside lamps are £59.95 each and the blue striped bed throw and pillow sham set is £39.95 (all available from HomeShed). Metamorphosis by Design provides a complete turnkey solution from interior design conception to furniture order, delivery and installation – even taking away empty bo es, fitting light bulbs, batteries, e tension leads and if you live outside Cornwall, they will email you a photo of your holiday home with everything installed and complete. For further information contact Lucie on 07497 765286 or visit www. metamorphosisbydesign.co.uk for a complimentary design consultation.

ozen Furniture came from the creative relationship of Ian Cox and Alan Pearce; cabinetmakers by trade. Along with a team of talented craftsmen and women, they make beautiful and unique furniture and kitchens. Rozen’s workshop is based in a little village called Ruan Minor on the south Cornish coast, an idyllic location that has attracted skilled artisans looking to exercise their exceptional skills working on interesting and creative projects. With 30 years experience under their belts, Rozen specialises in making bespoke furniture, kitchens and interiors. As well as accepting large commissions, the team are happy to make one-off pieces too. So whether you’re looking for a subtle, functional unit or a standout statement piece, no commission is ever considered too small. Rozen is proud to have a countrywide client base, which is growing. The process of commissioning Rozen to create beautiful furniture for your home is ersonal from start to finish. ou ll meet with co-director Ian Cox, either at the showroom or your own home, to discuss your ideas. Ian will manage your commission, liaising with designers and makers to best make your idea a reality. With their expertise, they will advise on wood s e ifi ation, materials and finishes to reate something beautiful that suits. The team encourage clients to come and see their projects in progress at the Rozen workshop on the stunning Lizard peninsula. Decked Out On a fine Cornish day, there’s nothing better than a beautiful and stylish deck on which to sit and enjoy it.

A

bout halfway between Pelynt and Looe in south east Cornwall, is the delightful Cornish hamlet named, for a reason lost in the mists of time, Barcelona. The relevance of this is that it’s home to CDM Decking, who quietly go about their work installing much of the high-quality uPVC and timber decking seen around the county. There’s a booming market for self-catering holiday accommodation, from static caravans to high-end holiday homes, along with signifi ant numbers of hotels and private dwellings also looking to enhance their outside space. This huge increase in demand has been met with consummate professionalism by CDM. For those of you who have previously seen only DIY versions, the system that CDM uses will come as something of a revelation. The decking consists of a subframe, newel posts

(these are uPVC-clad timber posts and are extremely strong and durable), handrails and the actual decked surface. All the timber is tanalised for weather resistance and, where it is clad in uPVC, the colour is guaranteed against fade for a remarkable 20 years. In addition, the uPVC handrails utilise the latest technology to combat fading, rotting and splintering – with a small amount of cleaning these units will look like new for many years. The deck boards themselves come in a variety of colours and styles, all non-slip, and both softwood and hardwood are options. To complete the outdoor look, CDM can manufacture a range of other timber products including ranch-style fencing, racecourse fencing, picnic benches, garden benches, smoking arbours and storage boxes. The team are also able to install lighting – a post-top coach lantern or globe lantern further improves both the look and the practicality of a deck.So why not add some decking at your Cornish retreat? It’s perfect for those balmy summer evenings of al-fresco dining and watching the sun go down.

side from its fantastic beaches and stunning scenery, Cornwall is famed for farming. Much of ritain s finest rodu e is reared and grown here, thanks to the naturally warm, tem erate limate. And one of the jewels in Cornwall’s farming crown is Fentongollan, with around 2400 acres of land on and around the Roseland Peninsula. Five generations of the Hosking family have been farming this land on the Fal estuary for over 130 years. Fentongollan uses a combination of traditional farming methods and cutting edge te hnology to yield the best ro s with the least effect on the environment.
