Christmas is coming! It’s time to start the celebrations, putting up the decorations and listening to a little Christmas music. And... we have some great ideas to get you inspired. We like to grow our own here at Cornwall Living Towers so the cover feature (page 12), your definitive guide to a Cornish Christmas, was written by Dan Warden, one of our media assistants, with a degree in English literature and creative writing. (I am watching my position carefully!). Many of us have longstanding family traditions whether, like us, it’s a walk on the beach on Christmas morning... whatever the weather, or even madder, taking part in a festive swim in the sea! Wetsuits are definitely frowned upon! Our cover feature should give you some ideas for a few of your own traditions to start this year. I was hugely lucky to meet the extremely wonderful Gareth Malone (there really aren’t enough superlatives for the fab Mr Malone) when he visited to record for his Christmas cd (page 46). It’s a lovely collection of songs from Brothers in Arms (Dire Straits) to more classic numbers recorded by voices, choirs and musicians around the country. And... you have a chance to win a signed copy (page 55). Then for decorations and gifts there’s plenty of ideas at Just Delights in Penryn (page 66). And Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a visit to the boozy Aladdin’s cave that is Constantine Stores (page 72). What would we do without the wonderful people at the RNLI turning out in all weathers to rescue those in trouble? We feature their Christmas appeal for a new Shannon class lifeboat (page 44). So, along with gorgeous properties to buy or holiday in, places to visit, ideas for the home, clothes, gifts and well being advice, we think we’ve got it cracked with this Christmas edition. Put on Gareth Malone’s Christmas cd, poor a glass of mulled wine, light the log burner and relax. Have a very happy Cornish Noël!

Cornwall named the Best UK Holiday Destination for the eighth year in a row Having first secured the title in 2009, Cornwall has enjoyed unrivalled success once again by claiming the majority of the public’s vote and outshining competition from across the country. This enviable feat was announced in November at a Gala Awards ceremony, which was held in London and attended by close to one thousand travel industry people. “Each and every person involved in tourism in Cornwall should be proud of this award. Thank you to everyone that has contributed to Cornwall’s success, and of course, to those who voted,” comments Malcolm Bell, Chief Executive of Visit Cornwall.
Adding to this already impressive achievement for Cornwall is the Lost Gardens of Heligans’ receipt of Best UK Leisure Attraction, with the Eden Project taking silver. Bude also emerged victorious with Best UK Coastal Resort for the second year in a row. It’s truly inspiring to see Cornwall commended for its fantastic tourist industry, as everyone works so hard to make Cornwall an outstanding place to live and visit. Well done! Make your home warm and welcoming with oak or Douglas Fir flooring by Aspen and Ash Aspen and Ash, of Redruth, has secured access to sustainably-managed English oak from the world-famous Tregothnan Estate. This limited run of elegant flooring adds natural beauty to any property, whether contemporary or traditional.
Summerhouse Gallery show us the art of Christmas The Summerhouse Gallery is a beautiful space showing the very best of Cornish art. Merely a stone’s throw from the beach in the ancient market town of Marazion, the gallery is a firm favourite for many art enthusiasts visiting and living in the area. The Summerhouse shows contemporary, impressionist work from both established artists and rising talents. At Christmas, bespoke jewellery and handcrafted glass light up the space to create a magical atmosphere. The gallery has an ethos of making the best of Cornish art accessible to all, so the gallery is of course child and dog friendly and even has a mini artist corner! A gift-wrapping and postage service is also available, making it the perfect spot for some Christmas shopping, whether for yourself or a loved one. For more information, updates and exhibition news, call the team on 01736 711400 or visit www.summerhousegallery.co.uk

Aside from freshly-sawn Tregothnan oak, Aspen and Ash has also accessed a reserve supply of reclaimed 90-year-old Douglas Fir. This flooring exudes warmth and individuality from the textures and grain of the wood, bringing any room to life. This exquisite engineered flooring can be used as a point of contrast against chic, ultramodern furnishings or used to complement period features to great effect.

NEWS & views continued Essa Collection’s range of seasonal clothing has something for you!
The Cornwall Glass and Glazing team reflect on an amazing year of community involvement
Essa Collection, found hidden away in Fore Street just moments from Porthleven harbour, has a special range of items for those who like to wear something that’s on trend and tailored to life by the sea. Based in Porthleven, owner Vanessa is well aware of the need to combine style with warmth at this time of year.
Under the umbrella of the Cornwall Community Foundation, and other worthy initiatives, 2016 has seen Cornwall Glass invest in excess of £15,000 to local charities. One of the charities currently being supported by Cornwall Glass is little known Cornish Cause SKYD, Supporting Kernow Young Diabetics. Christmas jumpers of questionable taste will be worn in December to help fund equipment and technology to enhance the lives of all under-21 year olds with diabetes in Cornwall.
A great example is Essa’s range of cashmere ponchos, which are available in 20 colours. At only £49 these are perfect for treating yourself or a loved one to a little luxury, and when paired with cashmere leggings and a Kantha sari silk scarf they are sure to turn heads. But Essa isn’t just a clothes shop! There’s a range of gifts just waiting to be chosen for that perfect present. From the fair-trade purses and bags to the stunning silver jewellery, you can be sure to make someone very happy this Christmas. And if you’re feeling indecisive then gift vouchers are also available. For more information call 01326 572236, Essa-collection or email mevanessa@hotmail.com
Searching for something different that could bring a bit of sparkle to a worthy cause, Cornwall Glass also set upon designing and producing an exclusive, freestanding, glass Christmas tree. The tree was created using Cornwall Glass’ state-of-the-art water jet cutter, which slices through glass like it was a piece of Christmas cake! Dressed with simple micro lights, the frosted glass tree is quite simply beautiful and will make a stunning centrepiece for any table. The tree was donated to Children’s Hospice South West to be raffled at its fundraising Silver Ball. It’s so heart-warming to see companies take an active part in supporting their communities. So, whatever you are doing this festive season, and whichever charity you choose to support, Cornwall Glass would like to wish you an absolutely smashing Christmas! For more information, visit www.cornwallfoundation.com and www.cornwallglass.co.uk
As the weather gets colder, the welcome only gets warmer at The Lemon Arms With the winter months closing around us it’s nice to get away from the cold and take comfort in delicious meals out. What could be better than going on a blustery winter walk before heading into The Lemon Arms in Mylor Bridge to be warmed by the cosy, traditional pub atmosphere and superb menu? With St Austell Brewery ales on tap and a fantastic party menu that offers three-courses for £19 over the Christmas period, this is a truly great place to get family and friends together to enjoy some outstanding, lovingly prepared, local produce. This family friendly pub also welcomes all four-legged family members as well, so no one will be left behind this holiday season! Indeed, with the Christmas tree up and the fire creating a warm and friendly glow, we can’t think of a better place to spend our festive nights. For more information call 01326 373666

o here we go again – Merry Christmas! Nowhere has more to get excited about over the festive period than Cornwall, so we’ve brought together some of our festive favourites, from family days out to Christmas Day swims, that we hope will help make this year’s your most Cornish noel to date.
é ABOVE We recommend the Fowey Christmas Market ì ABOVE Granny Moff’s illustrative story books, perfect for little ones
Little Piece of Cornwall
These Christmas cards from Dreya Bennett, augmented by their own unique, pretty glass pendants, will make a great addition to any Cornish gift.
Shopping With an abundance of Christmas markets across the county, now’s the time to wrap up and get out there, rather than letting the darker evenings put you off! Fowey Christmas Market, for instance, running from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th December with its impressive list of art, craft and foodie exhibitors, promises to be a big one. Perhaps, for you, Christmas is all about the food? In that case, head to Falmouth on Saturday 17th December, when the Cornish Street Food Collective will gather on The Moor for one of the town’s annual, premier street food events. While perusing the markets is a great way to find Christmas gifts, for many it can be a daunting task, especially with the dizzying waft of mulled wine muddling your senses! So, we highly recommend Little Piece of Cornwall. Dedicated to displaying the finest independent, Cornish retailers in one place, this online marketplace is a great starting point and, if you’re buying for those who hold Cornwall dear, it could easily prove to be a one-stop shop! Perhaps you know a little someone who enjoys nothing more than a good book? If so, Judy Scrimshaw, aka Granny Moff’s illustrative books are sure to grab their attention. With scintillating stories about Morgowr the Sea Giant and Morwenna Pendragon, as well as interactive illustrations to finish colouring in, these might just keep them busy long enough to allow you that elusive Christmas lie in!
Tree and decorations
Looking to replace the tired decorations that are sadly gathering dust in the loft? Head to Fentongollan Flower Farm and spruce up your festive look with one of their home grown, potted trees!

Or maybe you’re buying for a lover of extreme sport? Luckily for you, Shore Surf School is offering a discount on surf lesson vouchers, with availability even over the festive period! You never know – seeing in the new year on the famed breaks of Gwithian could be the perfect end to your family’s Christmas holiday. Once the presents are wrapped and hidden from prying eyes, the next thing to do is stock the cupboards. This can be a painstaking task, especially if you have to work right up to the big day, so why not take some of the sting out of it by having a Healthy Boxes veg-box, with everything you need, delivered straight to your door? And, while you’re at it, how about ordering your free range Turkey from Banbury’s, bringing you the most delicious and succulent festive birds, and in time for Christmas, too! Even if you’re on holiday – Cornwall’s home to some of the finest produce in the country, so getting to know your local, Cornish butcher is always a good choice. With the meat and veg on their way, all you need now is something to wash it down with. Head to John’s Wine and Spirit Specialists in St Ives or Constantine Stores near Falmouth and you’ll find a huge selection of everything ABV. Be careful, though – you may end up bringing back more than you can drink! Both offer a massive array of Christmas tipples as well as a range of gift ideas, ideal for stuffing their stockings!

Get out and about
So, the house is primed for Christmas and the schools have broken up. Isn’t it time you all got out and had some family fun? Do your kids ever wonder where their letters to Santa actually go? The Lost Gardens of Heligan are offering the chance for them to post their wish lists off to the man himself. The best part is, they can even come and meet him! In fact, there’s plenty going on at the gardens that were once lost, from festive markets and craft activities to walks through the magical, Lantern Lit Gardens, so be sure to pencil them in your diary. And, if you’re fond of the theatre and want to make the most of Christmas before it’s behind you, then book your ticket for the
Hall For Cornwall’s December production of Jack and the Beanstalk. Alternatively, take a trip to Princess Pavilions, Falmouth, for Miracle Theatre’s Cinderella, from Friday 16th to Saturday 31st December. Perhaps climbing aboard a fully working steam train to meet Santa would appeal to your little ones? Bodmin and Wenford Railway’s ‘Santa by Steam Train’ includes mince pies, refreshments and a bag of presents for the kids, making it fun for all the family! We all love a trip to the Eden Project. A firm Cornish favourite with a whole host of activities to keep the family fascinated, it’s perfect for Christmas. Spend the day hearing stories in the Mediterranean

dome, ice skating and making the most of the fantastic food on offer, before rounding off the evening at the Festival of Light and Sound – an awesome transformation of the wintry Eden landscape, on evenings throughout December. The best part about Christmas in Cornwall, however, is that you needn’t pay for a day out and with beautiful Cornish harbours, villages and towns lighting up for the festive period, there’s a lot to see. Head north for Tintagel, for instance, and you can see the home of King Arthur come to light, or take a trip south to the archetypally Cornish fishing village, Mousehole and
soak in its famous wintry evening charm. The lights here dim on 19th each year to commemorate the 1981 Penlee Lifeboat disaster, making it a beautifully moving evening to visit. On a clear day, head up onto one of the many coast paths and simply drink it all in. Over Christmas, while others stay at home, you could well find yourself letting your lunch go down with a stretch of coast all to yourself. Alternatively, a simple stroll on the beach is a great way for everyone to shed some of that excess energy and, if you’ve got a furry friend to think about, they’ll almost certainly relish the chance to chase their brand new ball!

Cornish tradition
Cornwall is steeped in tradition and Montol festival in Penzance has, for over a decade, seen the annual revival of some very traditional Cornish, winter celebrations. Marking the winter solstice and lasting for six days, including workshops, carol services and street-stories, Montol culminates on Wednesday 21st December with the lighting of the Cornish Yule Log – a wonderful juxtaposition of light and warmth against the wintry December chill. And speaking of winter chill – all over Cornwall, on Christmas, Boxing and New Year’s Day, crowds of the brave and bold can be seen taking to the sea for their annual (and arguably ill-advised!) swim. From Sennen to Polzeath and Portreath to Poldhu – with its café that opens 364 days a year – wherever you are, this fun tradition is hilarious to both watch and be a part of,

and there’s bound to be one near you. The best part is, with most going to the pub afterwards to warm up, it’s a great excuse to join and have a Christmas drink! So, that’s it – the rest is up to you! Whether you want to swim, feast, shop or just watch the world go by, I hope that somewhere over the last few pages you’ve found a few ideas to help you enjoy a truly Cornish noel.

Out & About Property
Not just
another year The Savills Cornwall team offer a snapshot of another successful year for desirable property across Cornwall.
F
rom the wild north coast to the estuaries of the south, from dramatic moorland to gorgeous fishing villages, Cornwall’s beautiful scenery has captivated generation after generation. For a decade now Savills Cornwall has had the privilege of handling the sales of some of Cornwall’s most desirable and unique properties, both on and off the open market. Now, as they near the end of another year, the team take a look back at a surprisingly successful 2016. Despite global distractions and uncertainties, both inside and out of the political spectrum, the team have both experienced and been on top of a notably busy Cornish market, with high levels of enquiries, viewings and sales across the county. In recent years, property values in Cornwall have recovered and are, once again, at the peak levels of a decade ago. In fact, in some parts, the team have even noticed significant growth. In some
coastal locations, there has been a noticeable increase in demand over the past two years. So what do the Savills team put their success down to? While it’s certainly not an easy market – one in which it can still take more time to make a sale than it did, say, during the property boom – with its appeal to foodies, art lovers, outdoor adventurers and those looking for an easy going culture in which to immerse themselves, Cornwall offers a lifestyle that is becoming vastly more popular each year, meaning demand has remained healthy for prime property, across all price ranges. So, congratulations to the Savills team – keep up the good work!
é ABOVE Looking at the array of properties and locations that Savills handles, it’s no wonder that the team have noticed a recent increase in demand!

There are many benefits to utilising the services of an architectural practice, whether you are building a new home, converting your loft, extending or altering your existing home. Good planning and considered design not only make for the best possible use of space but can also save money in ensuring developers have a comprehensive guide to follow in bringing your vision to life. A & K Architectural Services is an established, family-owned practice founded in 2005, offering a full architectural design, planning and building regulation service in Cornwall and the south west. Having grown from the construction industry the team have a practical and detailed approach to development with qualified knowledge in construction techniques, insulation solutions, plumbing, electrics and renewables. The team are happy to assist you at any stage of your development but are best introduced to a project at its infancy to help fully develop your initial ideas. They are there to work with you, ensuring the end product will meet all of your criteria whilst guaranteeing that the proposals are deliverable to your budget. On contacting them they will happily discuss your development and arrange a free initial visit, during which they assess, and most importantly listen. This ensures they gain a true understanding of what you are trying to achieve. From this point they will provide you with a quotation to include all architectural services to develop your visions. They will return to carry out a full measured survey of your home or development site and produce a draft scheme for your initial thoughts. At this stage they will work closely with you to tailor the development to your needs. Once a design is finalised they will work to gain the required approvals to construct the scheme providing you with a fully managed planning and building regulation approval service. They also offer a flexible project management service for further peace of mind during the build, for which more information can be found on their website.

Tailor your

A garden shed isn’t just for storing your shears anymore. With South West Timber Products it can be the focal point of your garden!
W
é ABOVE AND î BELOW From art studio to having some extra storage space, a garden shed is the ideal solution
hen you walk into your garden what do you see? A rotting shed, a log pile without cover or perhaps you have some chickens that are a little too free range? Now think about what you would like to see. Are you in the market for an outside art studio? Perhaps you want a place in which to enjoy a cup of tea in the morning as you watch the sun rise? Or maybe you simply want a well-ventilated coop for your poultry? South West Timber Products is a local, familyrun business that offers a range of bespoke, high-end garden buildings and summerhouses, to help turn your garden into the vision you want. Coming from a family farming background, and having been in the garden buildings industry for over 15 years, coowner Steve prides himself in knowing what is required in making you the perfect construction. There is plenty to be considered with your new shed, but don’t worry; the team over at SWTP are here to help. They can answer any questions you might have and can offer advice on cladding options, carcassing, shed treatment options and roofing. Some choices are made for you however, as this team of expert craftsmen know the importance of choosing one thing over another to ensure the build is of the highest standard, such as using slow growing redwood from the Baltic states. All of the timber used is accredited with both FSC and PEFC, which ensures sustainability and ethical sourcing. When your shed is built you can finish it off with a coat of waterproof paint to create a truly eye catching addition to your garden while
feeling safe in the knowledge that every screw, panel and ply has been picked and assembled with absolute care. When choosing a company to build something for your home you want to ensure that they are going to put as much thought and care into it as you would. That is why co-owners Steve and Kevin suggest finding a company that will only sell you something they would be happy to purchase themselves. And when you look at this family-run business, you can’t help but feel that every piece of work is made as though they themselves will be taking it home.

hose of us who suffer from allergies know all too well how a musty and damp environment can make a significant impact on our health, particularly over the winter months. Redwell’s infrared panel heating system presents significant opportunities for homeowners to not only benefit from large energy saving and reduced running costs, but experience improved health and living conditions as well. Mr and Mrs Stoppard, two thankful clients of Redwell, were delighted to find this out for themselves. After taking the plunge and purchasing their dream stone and cob cottage earlier in the year, the couple set about the task of renovation, but with listed status and an ancient oil heating system, one of the first major decisions was which heating system to choose. Winter brought additional concerns as the family’s youngest child suffered from asthma and eczema, with symptoms worsening at certain times of the year. Having gone to the trouble of installing air filtration systems in previous properties, the family were particularly attracted to the health benefits an infrared system could provide. The results really do speak for themselves. According to the customer, since installing Redwell panels in each
room, the family have been delighted to find that colds no longer develop into chest infections, eczema has improved dramatically and inhalers for asthma are no longer required at home. Mrs Stoppard tells us: “Our son has a panel on his bedroom and his room is at a nice constant temperature – it’s just a healthy, comfortable heat. We couldn’t have asked for anymore. He’s had a few colds which would usually turn into a chest infection, but that hasn’t happed so far, and to be honest, I don’t expect it to.” Redwell infrared heating panels are a flexible, energy efficient replacement for convection systems. Rather than heating the air, like traditional gas, oil and electric systems, infrared heats the very fabric of your building. By circulating less dust the infrared panels create a clean, comfortable and relaxing environment. So, if your home could do with a steady stream of warmth and good health then contact Redwell Infrared Heating and find out how you can transform your cold house into a cosy home.

A blazing

Warming homes all over Cornwall, we take a look at Kernow Fires and the keys to its success.
W
hen he joined in 1998, Simon Breckon had no idea of the extent to which he would transform his father’s local coal business. However, seeing the trend and potential for woodburners, Simon installed a stove in the coal yard office to keep warm and so the first Kernow Fires showroom was born! When his father retired, Simon bought the company from him and has since worked exceptionally hard to grow and innovate continually. Today, says Simon: “We are a very different business, with a great team and product range.” As possibly the leading fireplace retailer in the south west, Kernow Fires is a company that does not want to stop
S
growing! In fact, the business is a market leader who many other retailers look to, and it’s to the team around him that Simon attributes a lot of his success. If you’re looking to keep warm through the winter, nowhere will you find a more comprehensive service than Kernow Fires. They have two fireplace showrooms in Cornwall, five teams of installers and more than 25 employees in total, helping to drive the company and continue its success. More recently, and much to the company's excitement, Simon has purchased Kernow Metals of Wadebridge, a long standing supplier of bespoke metalwork to Kernow Fires, further expanding the Kernow Fires brand and its versatility. Simon explains: “Our affiliation with Kernow Metals over the years has always been strong. David Smith, the previous owner of Kernow Metals, wanted to retire and we were keen not to lose this vital resource!” Metal fabrication fits well with our service and we are literally bursting with ideas. Jamie Whitelaw, a skilled metal fabricator and talented craftsmen, is the new ‘main man’ at Kernow Metals. He is relocating back to his family’s roots specifically to work with Kernow Metals. Having already made a name for himself by working on film sets and creating large, bespoke pieces for private clients, Jamie

is a fantastic addition to the well-oiled Kernow team and testament to the business’s urge to develop, expand and push the industry forward, so watch this space. Knowing what it means to develop as a Cornish business, Kernow Fires is constantly striving to give back to the Cornish community. As a result of this, it has just completed its first month on a project aiming to deliver Cornish, kiln-dried wood to local homes, helping promote and distribute for Wild Wood, a Cornish company specialising in kiln-dried firewood. Taking a look back on what it has taken to get to this stage Hugh, owner of Wild Wood, explains: “I felt that nobody was seriously looking at the home-grown wood supply issue, especially in the south west.” Early on in the project, Hugh contacted Kernow Fires, looking for a wood-fired boiler to heat his state of the art kiln. The biomass department of Kernow Fires installed a 300kw wood chip boiler to power Hugh’s kiln with the capacity to handle a second kiln which will soon to be needed to handle demand. Simon said: “It is a fantastic system when you think it’s mostly fuelled by the waste of the wood processing. Wild Wood is a great company to have close to us as good wood fuel is a very important element of running a successful stove shop.”
“For us, Hugh’s vision has always been a very exciting prospect, one which we have wholeheartedly supported,” explains Simon. “With the biomass installation complete and Hugh able to keep up with our demand, we’re thrilled to be able to provide our customers with low-carbon, sutainable and local logs!” Prices for these logs range from £5 per bag to £165 per crate, including delivery. For more information on how you can fuel your wood burner more sustainably, visit the Kernow Fires website. All in all, it’s been a very exciting 2016! Having greatly evolved as a business in just a year, who knows what 2017 will hold? In the meantime, if you’re looking to change the way you warm your home this winter, we highly recommend getting in touch with the Kernow Fires team to see how they can help.

Stay warm, go green Reduce your energy bills while creating a cosy and comfortable place to live.
é ABOVE GreenGenUK’s bespoke heating solutions offer a sustainable and efficient way to heat your home
W
ith winter very much all around us, most of our thoughts turn to keeping warm and snuggly as the cold tries to get in. But why should we keep warm at the expense of our wallets and our planet? GreenGenUK has a solution to help this chilly dilemma; air source heating! In contrast to traditional gas, oil or LPG heating systems, air source heat pumps emit heat at lower temperatures over longer periods of time. Not only does this drive down running costs, but it also helps to ensure a continuously warm and toasty property all year round, regardless of the temperature outside. Smart technology within the unit monitors changes in the external temperature and the heat pump automatically adjusts accordingly. By preventing temperature variance you should never feel that your home is too hot or too cold. This also helps older buildings and houses with damp concerns. By removing regular bursts of high temperature it prevents sweating within the fabric of the building, which prevents the build-up of damp. As a result of rising energy prices, more and more homeowners are making the jump
to renewable heating. Combine this with an air source heat pump’s ability to improve the comfort of living of new and older properties alike; there has never been a better time to switch to renewable heating. Heat pumps are also eligible for government incentive from the Renewable Heat Incentive. In fact, thanks to savings on energy bills and financial incentives, most air source heating installations pay for themselves within seven years. The GreenGenUK team have been installing air source heating solutions since 2011 and the company is one of Cornwall’s leading renewable installers. Providing free quotations to customers throughout the south west, GreenGen designs bespoke solutions tailored to the needs of each customer. So contact GreenGen and turn your home into a beacon of warmth this winter.

A pastel coastal
! s a m t s Chri
The design team at Julian Foye have put together the best of the Christmas décor trends for this year.
E
very year the team at Pantone, the worldwide colour specialists, select the colour palette for the year ahead. These colours not only determine the fashion colours we see on the catwalk and the high street, but also our home furnishings; cushions, curtains, rugs, lighting and home accessories, right down to, yes you guessed it – our Christmas tree decorations. Of course, decorating your home for Christmas with the traditional holly berry red and green palette will always transcend the dictates of fashion, but for those of us who like to embrace change, the design team at Julian Foye have put together the best of the Christmas décor trends for 2016, plus their favourite stylist tips to dress your home for the festive season… For Christmas 2016, the trend colours are aqua blue, rose quartz pink, pale blue and silver grey – hues which naturally complement the coastal home and create a pretty pastel theme, explains the Julian Foye design team. To achieve the look, they suggest setting the festive ambiance from the moment you enter your home with a small Christmas tree in your
hallway or if you are short on space, use a glass hurricane lantern or vase and fill with aqua blue, pink and silver baubles and a string of battery operated LED lights. The mirrored reflections will dance around the walls, lending a magical twinkling light to your entrance hall. Alternatively, fill glass mason jars or hurricanes with white votive candles surrounded by sugared pink, blue and silver almonds and place on window sills to create a soft, inviting glow in your windows on cold winter nights. Pale gold and copper hues are also popular this year, as copper has been enjoying a resurgence in popularity across all home interiors over the past few years and not surprisingly this has translated into copper coloured Christmas accessories. Rustic and homemade themes are also key Christmas design trends and can be fun activities that involve all the family in the run up to Christmas, whether it’s baking pink and blue iced cookies with little ones or decorating lights and chandeliers with mistletoe, ivy and spruce. This is quite the simplest and most cost effective look to give any room an instant wow factor that your guests will admire – just be careful to keep your decorations away from the bulbs and

afely sheltered from the Atlantic winter gales, The Tywarnhayle team are ready with a warm welcome as you look for respite after a wintry beach walk. Ready for Christmas, they’re already getting excited for events such as the lantern parade on 8th December, which, with Santa’s grotto and carols from a local choir, promises to inspire anyone who’s yet to feel festive! And, on 12th December, the team will add a Christmassy twist to their weekly quiz, offering spot prizes from 8.30pm. In fact, Perranporth’s winter calendar is packed with festive activities and on 18th December, the town’s Christmas market will bring together arts, crafts, foodie stalls and local choirs – perfect for enjoying Christmas by the sea. The new festive menu, which they’re particularly excited about, is ideal for work parties and family gatherings. Just £14.95 for two courses or £19.95 for three, it includes table decorations as well as after dinner tea, coffee and Cornish festive fudge. Expect seasonal favourites such as homemade duck pate and sweet pepper with onion soup, as well as traditional roast turkey, silverside beef and pan-fried seabass! And, when Christmas has been and gone and you’d rather not face the task of cooking on New Year’s Day, the Tywarnhayle carvery is there to help ease that post-party hunger.
ë TOP LEFT We’re particularly excited for the sea bass! é MAIN Warm and comfortable – just what you need after a cold winter
On the 20th, the Local Vocalz choir will take centre stage, singing festive favourites and creating a wonderfully musical backdrop to the traditional and eagerly anticipated Christmas draw. Knowing what it means to be at the heart of a community, The Tywarnhayle will be open on the big day itself, from 12pm to 3pm, inviting locals and visitors alike to pop in for a celebratory toast to a very merry Christmas. With plenty of festivities around the town to get excited about and the beach just moments away, The Tywarnhayle Inn is the perfect place to start getting into the Cornish Christmas spirit.

The SeaHoss
The SeaHoss, originally a fish cellar, was built from the timbers of an ancient shipwreck that washed up on a local beach during the 17th century. Recently, an impressive renovation has seen it transform into a luxury seaside cottage, perched proudly on the harbour wall in the heart of Mevagissey.
Looking out, there are some stunning views to be enjoyed through the windows. Inside, exquisite furnishings, such as the wall lights in the morning room – salvaged from a famous romantic 1930s ocean liner – as well as a galley kitchen, complete with electric Aga, give this Cornish, by-the-sea retreat a true sense of seaside authenticity. Guests at The SeaHoss can make the most of lunches with a view – a benefit of having their own private, harbourfront terrace. And, with the pretty slipper bath overlooking the sea, what better way to round off an easy day by the sea than soaking with a flute of bubbles? Set in a stunning part of Cornwall, with local fishermen bringing home some of the country’s finest and freshest seafood for you to choose from, fresh off the boat, The SeaHoss is the perfect place to enjoy a real taste of coastal Cornwall. 02032 868330 www.theseahoss.com

With Christmas fast approaching, let’s show some festive spirit and help fund the RNLI’s latest lifeboat currently being built, which could help save lives at sea in Cornwall.

he Shannon class lifeboat, due to be named Brianne Aldington, will enter the RNLI’s Relief Fleet when it rolls off the production line at the charity’s All-weather Lifeboat Centre at RNLI HQ in Poole, Dorset, next year. As a Shannon, the lifeboat will be capable of reaching speeds of 25 knots and, thanks to its twin water jet engines, it is the most agile all-weather lifeboat in the charity’s fleet. Being a Relief Fleet lifeboat, it will be deployed on service at lifeboat stations across the UK and Ireland that have a Shannon – like St Ives Lifeboat Station – when the station’s own lifeboat is off service for repair or maintenance. Through the lifesaving charity’s Christmas appeal, the RNLI hopes to raise £640,000 to help fund the new Shannon lifeboat. It costs £2.2 million to produce a Shannon, with the majority of Brianne Aldington being funded by a legacy gift left by Catherine Anne Aldington. Mrs Aldington and her late husband Brian had a lifelong ambition to fund a lifeboat in their joint names – an ambition that will be realised when Brianne Aldington goes on service next year. Rob Cocking, RNLI Coxswain at St Ives Lifeboat Station, says: “As the saying goes, Christmas is a time for giving. So we’re asking the public for their support to help us raise enough money to fund our latest Shannon class lifeboat this
Christmas – it could help us save lives here at St Ives Lifeboat Station in the future. Having this lifeboat in our Relief Fleet ensures we can continue to save lives at sea 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – even when our station’s lifeboat goes off service for repairs or maintenance.” Whether they’re unwrapping presents, tucking into a turkey or settling down to watch the Queen’s speech, volunteer lifeboat crew members across the UK and Ireland will be on call 24/7 over the festive season, ready to drop everything to go and save lives at sea when their pagers beep.

Ding dong merrily

An opportunity to interview living legend Gareth Malone, visiting Cornwall to record the Perranarworthal Handbell Ringers for his Christmas album?… Yes please! words by:
Mandy Milano
G
areth Malone is travelling the country recording choirs, musicians and singers for his Christmas album. And he is recording them where they usually rehearse, whether that’s a school or village hall, church, pub or – in this case – someone’s front room in a pretty bungalow at Penpol, overlooking the creek. It’s a gorgeous sunny day and one cameraman is already here from ITV and the BBC crew will arrive shortly. I am a bit starstruck! Gareth is already there when I arrive; the lovely lady from Decca Records greets me, introduces me to Janet, the homeowner and leader of the handbell ringers, and whispers that Gareth is working at the moment so I am to come in quietly and will be introduced shortly. But Gareth is having none of it!
Official images courtesy of: Ray Burmiston
As soon as he hears me he abandons his laptop in the dining room and comes out to say hello. All warm smiles, he is genuinely pleased to meet me! I am a little in love and a little less in awe! And no, of course, I’m not disturbing him, and what would I like to do first, interview, photos, whatever? We disappear outside for a few photos… “Is it too bright? Will I be squinting?” I am obviously working with the quintessential professional! Then we settle in the sitting room to chat. Well I say settle, we have to move a couple of chairs together in a tiny space that’s left in the room, which has been completely taken over by tables on three sides around a tiny space for a conductor (Gareth) and lots of wires and microphones overhead, to the side and on the tables. I look across at Janet, the leader of the handbell ringers, and

she grins happily at me! Through the sliding doors, the sound engineer is setting up equipment and testing microphones. To say that Gareth is delightful is an understatement; he is easy and relaxed and seems unaware of his status and fame. And he loves being in Cornwall. “It’s one of my favourite places,” he tells me with a grin... he smiles a lot! “I’ve been coming here for holidays since I was a child and now I come back with my family. My walking boots are wearing thin after some brilliant rambles in Cornwall in April. I just wish I had time to stay longer for a bit of walking this time too… but
The album features contributions from stars including Ricky Wilson (from the Kaiser Chiefs) on the track Paradise Street written by Gareth, Fyfe Dangerfield on Silent Night and Welsh harpist Catrin Finch on Walking in the Air. And, Gareth does what he does best – working with a host of singers, including the London Youth Choir, Belfast Community

we are due back in London for the Invictus choir, then up to Birmingham to record some gospel singers and then a school choir in Wales where the school got burnt down in an arson attack on New year’s Eve. And on it goes! The schedule is pretty packed!” He grins again obviously in his element making music with people in their local communities. A Great British Christmas, released on Decca on 2nd December, is Gareth’s first Christmas album, and aims to unite the country through music. The nation’s favourite choirmaster conducts recording sessions with a variety of musicians in different locations – from our own Perranarworthal Handbell Ringers, to the Hornsey Girls School Steel Pans Band in London, and the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band in West Yorkshire.
Gospel Choir, Birmingham Gospel Choir, plus the Invictus Choir in a rendition of the Dire Straits classic ‘Brothers in Arms’. His own choir, Voices, can be heard singing on every track apart from one, Only You, which features Gareth’s own voice, stacked up to form a choir. The album includes a mixture of winter favourites, including the music to Frozen, plus traditional Christmas songs in new arrangements, and even a performance of Gareth’s own carol, A Child is Born, the first piece he ever wrote. A young Gareth composed it while he was still at school and his old music teacher shares the writing credit. Last year, his Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir swept to a shock victory over

Justin Bieber for the UK Christmas number one spot. A Bridge Over You became a social media sensation, with even Bieber supporting its run to the top. Can he do it again? Gareth tells me: “I’m just delighted to be bringing together musicians from all over the country for this new recording project, which offers a fresh take on traditional festive tunes and celebrates the unique sound of a British Christmas.”
A bit of background “I've been obsessed with music since before I can remember. I was always playing the piano as a young child and singing has been part of my life since the very beginning. I grew up in London until I was ten, when we moved to Bournemouth and I attended the local grammar school. It was here that my love of choirs began. Studying Drama at the University of East Anglia, I had to fit music into my spare time. But I was always in the university choir and started composing music for theatre productions. When I finished my studies I wanted to continue learning about singing so after a few years of private tuition I auditioned for a postgraduate course at The Royal Academy of Music, London.” He stops and smiles proudly. “After two years of very hard work I passed with distinction in 2005.” But he’s probably best known for BBC2’s The Choir. The series has become incredibly
successful, winning BAFTAs, an RTS and a Broadcast award. “I’m still in contact with many of the singers from my previous projects and I’m delighted by the progress made by Lancaster School Choir since the series, proving that boys really do sing.” The programme has given birth to new singing groups such as the wonderful South Oxhey Choirs and the amazing Military Wives Choir, who topped the charts with Wherever You Are, bringing a tear to the most cynical of eyes!
Back at the house The bell ringers have arrived, as have the BBC; much meeting and greeting ensues, then some photos (with obligatory Christmas hats, even though it’s a rather warm autumnal day), and a couple of takes of Gareth arriving at the front door and meeting the bell ringers, who are all as star struck as me and continue to giggle and fluff walking through the front door! But then things start to settle down to the serious stuff of recording; the bell ringers now arranged round the tables. A couple of nervous, early misunderstandings are sorted out… “No you don’t play the first few bars, they are just there to help you to come in.”

é ABOVE The recording session in progress
I watch from the sidelines, shoeless! The sound engineer has asked the two cameramen and me to remove our shoes as the mics can pick up the vibrations of us moving around. The usually spacious front room is packed and warm. Gareth is looking a bit puzzled as the bell ringers practice… something isn’t quite right! He stops them and asks them to ring each bell in turn, it gets to about bell six when his face lights up and he says, “That’s it! That’s the clear Christmas ring
“The bell ringers relax and rise to the occasion of working with such a professional… and the sound is glorious!”
of a hand bell I want!” And it is a wonderful clear uplifting sound. Janet steps in… turns out that everyone else has the equivalent to a bell ringer ’ s muffler switched on in their bells to lessen the sound for rehearsing indoors. With mufflers off, Gareth restarts the session, happy to have the joyful Christmas bell sounds he wants. The rehearsals continue, cameramen weave in and out of tight spaces to get just the right shot, while I sit and take it all in. The joy of watching Gareth Malone at work: building confidence, praising then asking for just a bit more: “maybe try letting that bell ring on rather then damping it next time… yes, that’s much better!” The bell ringers relax and rise to the occasion of working with such a professional... and the sound is glorious! I have already ordered several copies to share out, and I am definitely keeping one! This is a bit different from the usual Christmas music we have to tolerate in shops and on the radio… it’s just proper festive music made by people from all walks of life across the UK under the rather wonderful leadership of one Gareth Malone! I am in awe!

Advice
How will you spend yours? Since 6th April 2015, anyone aged 55 or over has been able to take their entire defined contribution pension fund however they want...
T
his decision has allowed most pension plan-holders to draw down as much, or as little of their pension, at any time. Effectively, we are now free to shop around and devise a multitude of product combinations – even taking it all as cash! However, whilst retirement freedom creates more choice, it can also bring with it more risk... And it’s not just pension plan-holders coming up to retirement who are considering this issue. It will also impact upon those of us in the workplace who are looking to build up our pension pot (or thinking about taking one out), who now recognise that the new government rules may require a change in our pension planning. On average men retire at 64 years and 6 months and women at 63.8, according to the report Retirement Income Uncovered by Old Mutual Wealth. At these ages men can expect to live until 86.3 and women until 86.9. Being retired for 21 years or more means planning for an income that funds retirement for this length of time. Don’t pay any more tax than you have to... The first 25% of your pension pot will be taxfree either as one lump sum or as the first 25% of multiple lump sums. Here are some of the key options arising from the Pension Freedoms:
1. Uncrystallised funds pension lump sum These funds are ‘uncrystallised’, as they have not yet been used to pay a scheme pension, buy an annuity, or designated to a flexi-access drawdown fund. As it stands, your pension pot would remain as currently invested, or can be taken partly, or all, as cash.
2. Annuities Historically, three-quarters of the 320,000 or so people that retire each year opted for an annuity, which offers a regular guaranteed income.
And, for many, this certainty of payment may mean that it’s still the best option. (Source: HM Treasury, March 2014)
3. Flexi-access drawdown At the other end of the scale are ‘drawdown products’, which could potentially offer a better return but do come with a higher degree of risk, as you’ll still be investing in the stock markets, and so on.
ê BELOW Matt Begley, retirement planning expert at Harris Begley Financial Planning
4. Blended solutions The likelihood, for many, is that they may opt for a mix of immediate cash, annuity and flexiaccess drawdown – thereby meeting current needs, delivering a guaranteed income for life, yet also leaving some funds invested in the hope of future growth. Making the right decisions for your future can seem a daunting prospect and it’s essential that you take expert advice. Harris Begley take pride in offering a personal service that takes your individual circumstances into account. Get in touch for a free, no-obligation consultation to discuss your pension and plan for your future. The value of pensions and the income they produce can fall as well as rise. A delightful decade Penryn’s Just Delights celebrates ten years of helping to make Cornwall’s homes beautiful.
words by:
Felix Rowe
I
t’s always heartwarming to discover an independent, family-run business that’s not just surviving, but positively thriving. This is just the case with mother-and-daughter team, Daun and Jemma at Just Delights in Penryn. In fact, family values lie at the very heart of this inspiring gift and homewares shop, which recently celebrated its tenth birthday, at the source of the Penryn river. Keen to discover more, we pop in to see what all the fuss is about. So what’s the key to success? “Amazing support from our lovely customers who have kept us going for the last ten years,” says Jemma. Especially in today’s uncertain climate, it takes a lot to take root. Jemma and Daun follow the simple but effective ethos that if
you want to be cherished by the community then you have be an active part of it. “It’s essential,” says Daun. “Penryn is a thriving town, and we love to call it home. It’s great to watch families grow with us.” They also like to support local charities, ever willing to donate raffle prizes for a good cause. Wandering around the store, it’s easy to see the attraction – a real treasure trove of beautiful delights for house and home, and plenty of gift ideas. As one happy customer once remarked, “this shop is like food for the soul.” Jemma, whilst unassuming, has a clear eye for design, as highlighted by the beautiful displays. Jemma has designed and built most of the shelving herself, including chunky wooden shelves and scaffolding frames, creating a cool, ontrend industrial look. The entire shop is beautifully curated with great thought, segmented into themed collections, to help you find exactly what you’re looking for – homewares, beach chic, gifts (including a large card collection for every occasion), weddings (from decorations to favours), new babies, children… it’s all there, waiting to be discovered. Just Delights stocks a huge range of Grand Illusions vintage paint. “Customers have found it much better to use than other wellknown brands of chalk paint,” explains Daun. “It’s very smooth – like painting with double cream! What’s more, it comes in a beautiful colour palette.” (Inspired by Daun’s enthusiasm, we later return to pick up a pot and have a go ourselves at home, transforming an old, dark cupboard into a bright, chic and entirely unique piece of furniture – result!)

It’s worth popping in regularly too as the stock is ever changing. Expect lots of beautiful colour schemes for spring 2017, featuring relaxing turquoises and corals, as well as lots more homewares. As you’d expect at this time of year, Christmas has arrived, with a whole host of accoutrements to make the home fabulously festive. It’s all very sophisticated and tastefully done – not a piece of tinsel in sight! We love the subtle, contemporary Scandi inspired collection, with muted, whitewashed tones – the driftwood reindeer injects a unique beachy feel to Christmas. You have to offer something that little bit special in an independent shop, and this is where Just Delights really comes to the fore, offering a refreshing alternative to the high street. Yes, of course, there’s the fantastic array of unusual treasures themselves, sourced from a range of high quality, artisan producers from both near and afar. But – crucially – there’s also the accompanying service.
Good, old-fashioned traditional service, that is. “Jemma will go the extra mile for everyone,” says Daun, always keen to track down what you are looking for. Clearly attention to detail is so important. Just Delights offers a free gift-wrapping service, ensuring that the presentation is as exquisite as the gifts inside. Even more impressive is the fact they have raised over £800 this year from donations for CLIC Sargent, the charity that supports children and the young who have cancer. Just Delights also offers gift vouchers, which make the perfect Christmas presents. What does the future hold? Daun would like to do more painted furniture, while Jemma looks to offer a more formalised design consultancy service, drawing on her expertise in selecting beautiful wares for the home. Her eye for design has already caught the attention of a local developer. Next time I’m look for that unique gift or something special for the home, I know exactly where I’ll be heading.

New is winter Studio Gallery has something truly Cornish to go beneath the Christmas tree this year.
Opening times Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 5pm
H
aving opened just in time for the Christmas season, Studio Gallery is proof that Porthleven is still a popular winter destination, not only for its restaurants, pubs and coastline, but for its diverse wealth of work that draws discerning art buyers in, all year-round. Owned by Julia Schofield, this small gallery has a diverse range of work, including sculpture, glass, ceramics and textiles alongside paintings, prints and the jewellery of Emily Nixon and Julia herself! Step inside and you may be surprised to find a sparkling bridal hair garland alongside a giant lobster footstool, or a leather travel journal, handblocked in gold leaf, alongside a fantastical ginger jar in studio glass. “I’m particularly pleased to be featuring painter and print-maker Elaine Turnbull, and stained glass artist, Julia Mills at the moment,” Julia explains. “It’s really exciting to have the sumptuous gold, rose gold and silver designs of Emily Nixon as the only other jeweller in the gallery. Her precious metals are a glorious counterpoint to mine, providing a real choice for people.” Julia also has her own on-site workshop. “I have a small work area in the gallery where I create originals and limited editions,”
Julia tells us. “When I’m not designing for a wedding (which may include all the female principle guests!), I’m usually mixing luscious, semi-precious stones and Venetian glass; exploring whatever tangent I happen to be following, with a huge diversity of style and drawing influence from all my favourite periods.” While her special occasion and bridal work is well known throughout west Cornwall, the opening of Studio Gallery is a new, exciting venture for her! Now, she can display fine Cornish makers and painters who are not already in Porthleven, and whose work is not aimed solely at holiday visitors. So, if you’re looking to buy something this Christmas that’s handmade, Cornish and made within 20 miles of bustling Porthleven, check out Julia’s Facebook page or, even better, head to the gallery itself and give yourself a treat!

Cornwall Gold provides more than just local jewellery and Cornish history; it also boasts a scintillating seasonal menu.
I
t is well known that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and at Cornwall Gold it is also the best. You may not be familiar with Cornwall Gold’s role in serving outstanding Cornish food but the Cornish Pantry Restaurant offers award-winning chefs and locally sourced food, so local it comes from within 20 miles of the kitchen! So if you fancy a proper Cornish start to the day head on down to Cornwall Gold! You can find this hidden gem just off the A30, between Redruth and Portreath, and nestled amongst 18 acres of stunning grounds; it’s the perfect location from which to start your day. But how will you start your day? Are you a fan of the classic bubble and squeak or will you be tempted by the awardwinning full Cornish breakfast that is served on a tin miner’s shovel? We honestly don’t know how anyone could say no to that! The shovel is a brilliant gesture to the site’s rich heritage, as Cornwall Gold is home to the last remaining tin mill in Europe. Tolgus Mill is a historic treasure and offers a fascinating tour while maintaining selfsustaining commerce. The mill provides all of the tin that is featured in Cornwall Gold’s Tolgus Collection, a range of bespoke jewellery available in both heritage and contemporary
Cornish designs, and thus funding the restoration and maintenance of this amazing working mill. These delicately crafted pieces are forged from tin and combined with silver and gold, so they truly are pieces of history and art. Before you browse the wonderful craftsmanship onsite, you can ensure you are fully satisfied by the breakfast menu, which is served everyday until 11.30am. But don’t worry if that’s too early, the full Cornish breakfast is served all day alongside a variety of Cornish dishes such as licky pie, a pasty platter and clacky pork. The attentive service and delicious food are sure to leave you feeling satisfied as you head off for your day of exploring all Cornwall Gold has to offer. This Cornish treat is open every day throughout the winter months from 10am to 4.30pm, with the exceptions of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. But don’t worry, that still leaves you with plenty of time for your wonderfully Cornish day out.

Shopping foodie Doorly’s 12 Year Old Rum – £34.99 (was £38.99) Made at the legendary Four Square Distillery by people who simply don’t make bad rums, this 12 year old offering has masses of tropical fruit, chewy caramel, leafy tobacco and fragrant oak notes flowing through it. A great sipper, it wasn’t long ago that you had to go to Barbados to get your hands on this mythical rum!
Bowmore Nine Year Old Sherry Cask – £24.50 (was £28.50)
é ABOVE Constantine Stores
We’ll W drink to that!
This was selected by Carl from over 200 rums!
The Constantine Stores team share their top tipple tips for the coming festive season.
A new addition to the Bowmore range, this nine year old has spent its life in a combination of sherry and bourbon casks. For a young whisky, this one has a lovely, deep mahogany colour and, on the nose, you’ll notice cocoa, spice and Christmas cake with smoke. Rich dark fruits and sweet smoke are balanced by sea salt and peat smoke; the quality to price ratio on this whisky is fantastic and needs tasting to be believed.
Mark picked this – a hard feat with over 1000 whiskies to choose from
ith Christmas just around the corner, there’s no better time to visit the team at Constantine Stores, the south west’s largest wine and spirit retailer. See what’s new and get their expert advice on what’s hot when it comes to a good, festive tipple. With an absolutely staggering array of wines and spirits from around the world, Santa Claus himself would be hard pressed to fit everything available here on his sleigh! Boasting a wealth of knowledge, with plenty of options at their disposal, we were curious to know what the Constantine Stores team will be drinking this Christmas.
Iordanov Vodka – £39.99 This premium vodka is produced in one of Germany’s oldest distilleries, dated at over 150 years old, in the stunning town of Koblenz. Manufactured from 100% fine wheat and the crystal-clear, demineralised water from the Vogelsberg highlands, this vodka is distilled five times, making for a rich, gentle and aromatic flavour. Postdistillation, Iordanov Vodka is further filtered through charcoals to achieve maximum purity – a perfect gift for the discerning vodka connoisseur.

Krohn Vintage 2005 Porto – £18.50 (was £21.99) Full-bodied and loaded with fruit, this single Quinta port has the concentration and depth of the hot 2005 vintage, with dark black cherry flavours and a firm finish. While we by no means encourage heavy drinking, it’s important to remember that once you open a vintage port, it needs drinking within a couple of days!
Gunpowder Gin – £31.99 Distilled in a little shed, in a small Irish town called Drumshanbo at the edge of a lake, this gin pushes the boundaries of distillation. Marrying some of the finest Irish and oriental botanicals together, including gunpowder tea, this unique gin never seems to last long on the shelves!
Atholl Brose – £17.99 (was £19.50) Inspired by an ancient Highland recipe, the award-winning Dunkeld Atholl Brose is a delicious, boutique liqueur that captures the best natural flavours of Scotland. A luxurious golden blend of single malt whisky, honey and carefully selected herbs, this is a standalone product that’s steeped in Scottish history. Indeed, this is one of the store’s most popular whisky liqueurs and the perfect accompaniment to a warm mince pie.
Two Birds Christmas Spice Vodka – £35.99/£11.85 (70cl/20cl)
Sam loves this, but feels guilty about the other 250 gins she left out!
While these are some of the team’s favourites, you can view the full range of products on the Drink Finder website...
Ever wanted to drink an alcoholic mince pie? The consensus among the Constantine Stores team is that this vodka comes very close to that! Take superb English vodka made from a base of cereal barley and sugar beet and infuse it with a blend of Christmas spices, including nutmeg, cinnamon and dried fruits, to create a smooth and winter-spiced festive drink – perfect next to a log fire!
Marquis de Montesquiou Reserve Armagnac – £29.99 (was £32.99) This excellent reserve Armagnac is double matured – initially in fresh, local black oak casks and later transferred to less active casks for the rest of its maturation. Sweetly honeyed with wood spices developing along with caramel hints and fragrant touches, this is one for the Christmas cabinet. While these are some of the team’s favourites, Constantine Stores has a massive selection of alcohol to choose from and, not only that, tasting sessions are regularly held there so that you can try the best on show when it comes all things ABV. On Saturday 10th December, courtesy of the Southwestern Distillery team, there will be a Tarquin’s Gin tasting from 11am to 3pm!

Celebrated Cornish painter Matthew Lanyon passes away

Plymouth College of Art’s graduates are making waves in the creative industries! At the Cannes Yachting Festival this year Princess Yachts revealed an incredible artistic installation created by BA (Hons) Textiles graduate Hannah Webb and First Class BA (Hons) Contemporary Crafts graduate Fern Robinson from Plymouth College of Art. The collaborative piece of art brings to life the network of hidden wires inside every Princess Yacht, as part of a new partnership between Princess Yachts and Plymouth College of Art. This is just one of many industry partnerships that provide a myriad of professional opportunities for students and graduates. Founded in 1856, Plymouth College of Art is a specialist art college offering a range of Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Pre-Degree qualifications in contemporary art, craft, design and media practises. Plymouth College of Art students and graduates, like Hannah and Fern, are making waves in the UK’s booming creative industries, which contribute over £80 billion per year to the UK economy and provide employment for over 1.8 million people.
Matthew Lanyon, who has died aged 65, was one of Cornwall’s most important painters. An artist of singular vision, whose passion for the landscape and cultural legacy of his beloved Cornwall runs vibrantly throughout his work, Matthew leaves an immeasurable contribution to the art of Cornwall. Born in St Ives in 1951, the third of six children of celebrated painter Peter Lanyon and his wife Sheila, he was raised amongst the major figures of British Modernism. Despite winning the art prize at Penzance Grammar School as a child, Matthew was initially discouraged from studying art, but ultimately his early career as a joiner and carpenter gave way in his mid-thirties to a pressing desire to paint. “It was not until 1988 that I began to take my artwork seriously. At that time, I was drawing and painting every morning with my son, in the days before he went to school.” Matthew’s unique visual language and rare skill as a painter, thinker, and writer of prophetic words have given us some of this county’s most definitive and culturally relevant works. Those which hang in collections around the world take with them the story, not just of Cornwall as a landscape, but of its people, its folklore, of the artists’ own illuminating experience of time and place, and of the history and ongoing development of Cornish art. www.fineartcommunications.co.uk

Ellis’ edgy style takes urban art to a whole new level, with the aim of bringing street art from the “outside in”. He draws from iconic moments in history, to which he likes to add a twist or create a juxtaposition to challenge the viewer, so expect the unexpected! For a wide range of original paintings and limited editions by artists from around the world, visit the gallery or see the website.
Jeweller Sally Napier creates handcrafted jewellery, emphasising attention to detail whilst keeping a contemporary edge. Each piece and design is created individually, combining semi-precious stones, silver, gold and freshwater pearls. You can purchase online or contact Sally if you’d like to visit her studio to see her work or discuss a commission or repair.
Originally from Northampton, Tom Gotch (1854 – 1931) was one of the first artists to discover the picturesque fishing village of Newlyn. This charming portrait of a local girl (c1908/9) can be seen on permanent display at Penlee House, alongside a selection of other works by artists of the Newlyn School.
The Craft Kiln (Cornish crafts), Sail Loft Emporium (antiques and collectables) and Cscape Art are all part of The Old Workshop, next to the main Charlestown car park. Many originals, prints and cards by artist Sarah Blakey and photographer Mick Blakey are available at the gallery. Please see website for winter opening hours.

“Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray”, Rumi. Using ancient 13th century inlay techniques, carved not painted, each tile is individually handcarved into wet clay, inlaid, glazed and fired over three days. No tile can be replicated, making each one unique. Commissions welcome.
The gallery’s light and airy space on Porthleven’s harbour side exhibits original work by some of Cornwall’s finest artists in a range of mediums. A bespoke framing service is available here as well as the Own Art scheme. The gallery is open daily 10.30am to 5pm. Where are you from and what do you do? I’m from Newquay and I am a glass artist. I make fused glass wall art and stained glass, either for galleries or private commissions.
Why did you choose to work with glass? I instantly fell in love with glass – its colour, its reflections and translucent quality instantly captured my heart. To me it has a similar quality to water. (Did you know that technically glass is a liquid?) It is enigmatic; you can look at it, or through it. It is there and not there and can create a potent visual effect, either opulent or subtle. Plus I love the technical challenges it poses, trying to create what you have in your mind, and even those happy accidents that can occur! What is your favourite thing about doing what you do in Cornwall? To be able to work creatively in such a stunning environment hugely influences my work; its colours and themes. How could you ever run out of inspiration living here? I am a very lucky lady! Why did you choose to sell through Little Piece of Cornwall? I think Cornwall has such a special quality and a tremendous range of specialised items, from food to crafts and artists. Little Piece of Cornwall helps us show that off. Where would you go in a time machine and why? Gosh, I don’t know, it’s so hard to choose! I think I would go into the future where I could buy a time machine of my own then I wouldn’t be restricted to one trip!
What does the future hold for Dreya Glass? A big, new kiln has just been ordered which will open up a whole new world of exploration and opportunity. So expect some larger pieces, and I’d also love to make some garden sculptures and statement lighting pieces in glass.

Weight loss surgery
Duchy Hospital offers advice and long-term solutions through bariatric surgery, with 18 months aftercare as standard.
W
ith one in four Britons now classed as obese, weight loss surgery has become an increasingly hot topic. Obesity is linked to diabetes, depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, stroke, sleep disorders, reduced mobility and even infertility. A BMI of 35+ often means that it’s physically difficult to exercise, while the body has basically reset itself to this obese level. The body then strives to defend this weight, making dieting extremely difficult. In the 1990s, the arrival of laparoscopic bariatric surgery meant there was another choice for obese people to shed the pounds. It is not, however, the simple quick fix portrayed by celebrities and the media, as it requires commitment and a great deal of support to ensure the surgery is successful in the long term. At Duchy Hospital, as well as pre-operative support, 18 months of intensive multidisciplinary post-surgery support is included in the package for all gastric band, bypass and sleeve procedures and six months aftercare is included with a gastric balloon procedure.
How does it work? There are three commonly performed bariatric surgery operations. The gastric band operation sees a restrictive band inserted around the top of the stomach that slows the passage of food through the stomach, resulting in a prolonged feeling of fullness after small meals. The gastric bypass operation alters the levels of hunger hormones, resulting in a markedly decreased and healthier appetite. The sleeve gastrectomy operation turns the stomach into a narrow tube combining elements of both the other operations. For less overweight patients, there is also a non-surgical option – the intragastric balloon. This is inflated inside the stomach via a
telescope and works by restricting the volume of food that can be eaten. Although the balloon is a temporary measure (it must be removed after six months), it can be a useful kick-start for weight loss. Ian Finlay, Duchy Hospital’s Bariatric Surgeon, tells us: “Since establishing Bariatric Surgery in Cornwall in 2007, I have enjoyed seeing the great improvements these operations can make to obese peoples’ overall health and happiness.”
Benefits of weight loss surgery Patients who are obese with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or over may be candidates for this surgery; patients typically lose 50% to 80% of their excess weight, which results in improved quality of life. Duchy Hospital is part of Ramsay Healthcare, offering an extensive support network, including access to specialist nurses, dietitians and support groups. You can spread the cost of surgery with 0% finance and Duchy Hospital also runs free open events so you can find out more.

Medical Facial Aesthetics, led by Dr Stolte in Truro, is here to help your skin feel fresh, new and healthier than ever.
M
edical Facial Aesthetics (MFA) has been delivering results since it opened in 2016. The clinic’s goal is to provide both a superior customer experience and tremendous value for customers. Dr Stolte, who has over 11 years experience in Medicine, continues to work as a GP in Cornwall and is passionate about exceeding your aesthetic expectations. He holds a degree in Aesthetic Medicine (with Distinction) from Queen Mary University in London. Dr Stolte’s philosophy is that the key to healthy looking skin is a skincare professional. A combination of customised at-home regimes with powerful in-clinic treatments and targeted skincare solutions can help your skin to look healthier, with an improvement in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of premature aging. In fact, MFA offers Wrinkle Relaxation Facial injections with the only licenced muscle relaxation product in Europe. The fundamental basis of any successful aesthetic procedure or skincare treatment is a good quality consultation with a skilled, qualified medical practitioner who fully understands your needs, and who looks at your treatment as a journey and not just a one-off event. Dr Stolte follows this view with every client, resulting in brilliant bespoke treatment planning. MFA only uses treatments and technologies of the highest clinical standards to optimise your treatment, ensuring you leave feeling satisfied and well looked after. One of its signature
treatments is the Fire and Ice facial treatment, designed to resurface the skin, treat problematic areas, reduce fine lines and encourage cellular renewal. This multi-step treatment combines two professional treatment masques with carefully selected iS Clinical products to optimise results. Fire and Ice is a treatment bridging the gap between a mild facial and an invasive peel, all with no downtime. The treatment has been the top-seller each year, for the last 12 years, at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills, and is also a firm favourite of numerous celebrities, such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Halle Berry. But it isn’t just for fine-tuning your skin cells; the treatment can also help clear acne and improve acne scarring, rosacea, or uneven skin tones. Indeed, if your skin is struggling with any of these complaints then a visit to Dr Stolte could see your prayers answered. Dr Stolte is the only provider of Fire and Ice Resurfacing treatments by iS Clinical in Cornwall and the products are 95-98% botanically derived, paraben and fragrance free and even safe in pregnancy! He is free for appointments on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, so get in touch to find out how your skin can be revolutionised.

Living with dementia The Cornwall Care team offers some advice to those who live with dementia, and to those who support them.
W
hat is dementia? The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that include memory loss and problems with thinking, problemsolving or language. There are different types of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. For someone who has been diagnosed, knowing the type of dementia they have can help them understand some of the difficulties they may face, and ways to manage them. Living with dementia A diagnosis of dementia can come as a shock, even if you have been half expecting it. This will be a worrying and upsetting time, and it can also be hard for those close to you. You will need a great deal of reassurance and support. Cornwall Care believes it’s important that its clients, employees and relatives feel supported throughout their time there. The team aim to provide a warm environment where clients can feel safe and listened to. Employees at Cornwall Care are trained in dementia care and ethics and clients are encouraged to take part in the various activities on offer, which may aid in the development of memory, communication and cognitive techniques. Creative ways to help people with dementia Enabling people living with dementia to remain occupied and involved in
interesting activities will keep their brains active and reduce their anxieties. People with dementia live very much in the moment so it’s important to make that moment as fun and enjoyable as it can possibly be. Even if they can’t remember afterwards why they felt happy, they will still feel the emotion of happiness after the event. One of the more stimulating activities is music therapy. There is a growing body of research showing the huge impact music and singing can have on people with dementia. Music can be extremely encouraging, making people more alert and expressive. It can also give people a chance to reminisce, which is one reason that Cornwall Care has these events. Cornwall Care is committed to making our world a better place for people with dementia. Moving into a new home can be upsetting and frightening, but Cornwall Care is there to help from the very beginning to help make the process easier. The team are happy to answer any questions you have and discuss the different care options available.

Art from
the heart
ë MAIN Creative expression can be a great form of meditation for those living with cancer
Made for Life Foundation has been busy again providing amazing workshops for help those living with cancer.
Fundraising Events Organiser
Are you a natural organiser who loves bringing people together? Do you have a passion and flair for organising events in your local area? Want to raise funds that help people with cancer in the UK? If any of these sound like you then please contact amandabarlow@ madeforlifeorganics.com, CEO/ Owner, Made for Life by Spiezia Organics, stating why you would like to get involved and why you feel it is a role you would excel in. It is never too late to help make a difference.
T
he most recent workshop to be featured by the Made for Life Foundation was a brilliant look into the power of mindfulness, meditation and art and the impact it can have on one’s wellbeing. Artist, children’s author and visionary Annie b., who lives in Cornwall, ran the workshop and she enjoyed it so much she has said she will definitely be running another in March next year! Her workshop, The Art from the Heart, offers the opportunity for people to access their hearts and creativity through guided, mindful meditation. Annie b. has found that “expressing ourselves creatively, in any way, really can help to bring calm, healing and wellbeing, while mindfulness and meditation can help anyone overcome the challenges life throws at us and can give us hope and peace in the moment”. The meditation was incorporated before, during and after the art session so that the art really was ensconced in self-awareness and calm. The workshop went down a storm with
everyone participating fully and producing some wonderful paintings. Workshops such as this are a fantastic way of bringing people together in a network of support: but they aren’t just important to the attendees; “My mother and father-in-law both have suffered with cancer and so it is a charity close to my heart, and I believe the opportunities it offers people can be life changing”, says Annie b. It just goes to show that charities such as this mean so much to everyone, both participants and volunteers, and it’s truly inspiring to see people give so much to it. For more information, contact Made For Life Manager, Juliette Hathway.
