ith dramatic coastline, rugged moors and rolling countryside, it’s no surprise that Cornwall is often chosen as the setting for fiction. So, for our cover feature this month, author Rachel Hickman takes us on a tour of literary Cornwall (page 18), exploring the landscape that has inspired the greats, from Du Maurier to Betjeman. Continuing this theme, we visit several beautiful homes currently on the market with Savills (page 24) presenting the opportunity to set up home in the heart of literary Cornwall. If you’ve already found your dream home and are ready to inject some flair, this issue is brimming with design ideas. Whitewashed walls or bold colour palettes? We showcase a range of contrasting approaches to use of colour and texture from some of Cornwall’s most acclaimed interior designers. Are you feeling lucky? As well as our usual competitions section (page 68), we present a fabulous ‘Winner takes all’ prize bundle (page 32) of amazing treats and experiences, from luxury spa packages to coastal cottage holidays – this really is our best prize package ever, so don’t miss out on your chance of winning! In Foodie, Dan takes a scenic boat trip from Porthleven to catch his own supper (page 90) and shares his tasty recipe for pollock and haddock – perfect for a beach barbeque with friends. We also visit The Cornish Barn in Penzance (page 84), a uniquely styled, smokehouse restaurant and bar that dares to do things differently. Finally, if you’re thinking of investing in a Cornish holiday home, take a look at our special getaways guide (page 71), with everything you need to know to start your adventure in the sun. Happy reading and we hope to see you soon!

But you’ll have to head just below, to the endlessly fascinating museum itself, to find this captivating carved statue in her permanent setting, alongside thousands of folk magic objects and witchcraft related items across two floors, a temporary exhibition (‘Poppets, Pins & Power’) and permanent displays. 100 reasons to visit Porthleven’s Customs House Gallery Art should be enjoyed by everybody, and thanks to the innovative Own Art scheme, it can be! The scheme, funded by Arts Council England, encourages ownership of original art, making it more accessible to all, by enabling the coast to be spread into ten monthly instalments, with no extra costs to the customer and no deposit to pay (www.ownart.org.uk).
One gallery that has wholehearted signed up to the scheme is Porthleven’s Customs House Gallery, which has just reached the amazing milestone of 100 applications! Louise from gallery says “We’re really proud to part of the scheme and are delighted to be helping people get original artwork into their homes!” Applications can be processed via email if buying from the gallery’s website, or in just 10 to 15 minutes in the gallery. What’s more, you can take your art home with you that day. So if you thought that beautiful piece you’ve pined after was out of your reach, it’s time to think again!

Marine Conservation Society joins forces with Waitrose
Aimed at creating the biggest beach and river clean event series ever, this new partnership will help mobilise the public in the fight against the rising tide of plastic litter on our beaches. Tor Harris, Head of Responsible Sourcing and Sustainability at Waitrose, tells us: “The marine environment is important to all of us, so the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) cleans were an obvious choice when thinking where to donate some of our plastic carrier bag funds.

Get the
coastal Scandi look… Owner of chic homewares boutique Coastal Scandi, Isabel Humphreys, gives us her advice on achieving a cool interior this summer. “Inspired by our love of the coast, nature and the outdoors, we share an affiliation with our Nordic friends,” says Isabel. “Scandinavian homes have a pure, pared back style that centres around clean lines, simplicity, flawless craftsmanship and understated elegance.”
Bring in
the outside! Cornish weather is slowly becoming more unpredictable, affecting how much time we can spend outdoors. Installing an awning on your outdoor area can help you make the most of your outside space, whether it’s hot, cold or throwing it down with rain.
So how to create the look? Isabel starts from the floor upwards. “Carpet never took off in Scandinavia and most interiors will have wooden, preferably light, flooring in all rooms. Think white walls, floors and ceilings, with cool grey and subtle blues. Add a contrast colour such as yellow, blue or black to add that contemporary feel.” Finally, as Isabel explains, you should declutter.
To find out more, call 01872 560500 or visit www.stylehome.co.uk
All items are available to buy at Coastal Scandi in Wadebridge, so pop in to see how you can create the look in your own home. For more information visit www.coastalscandi.com
Spark ignites ambition
of new business Guanchitas
An awning from Stylehome is completely bespoke, from the colour and the fabric used, to built-in lighting, heating and remote control. That’s right – you can open and close your new awning at the touch of a button! Quality and style is also guaranteed, as Stylehome is Cornwall’s leading Luxaflex Inspiration dealer. The Luxaflex range of awnings and canopies is state of the art and comes with a five-year guarantee, so you’ve got plenty of time to discover just how good it is!
“Simplify your space with functional, useful pieces. Choose furniture that is simple and elegant with clean lines – less is more! We love the elegance of Tom Raffield’s Arbor Chair in oak and grey wool, teamed with the fun quirky Shorebirds print, and bright injection of a yellow lambs wool throw.”
A recipe handed down for generations has been the inspiration for Guanchitas, a new business launched in Falmouth. Guanchitas is the female version of a Guanche, which translates as ‘cave people’.
The recipe for the authentic, traditional chilli sauce came from business owner Jennie Merilion’s grandmother who lived in a cave in the Canary Islands. Jennie has perfected the sauce, and signed up to the Spark programme to launch her business, a fully funded project by the European Regional Development Fund. If you have a great business idea, or you have registered in the last 12 months, why not contact Spark to start your journey. For more information call 01872 308236 or email spark@truro-penwith.ac.uk

All of the horses and ponies are suitable for all riding abilities and a pony day includes a half hour lesson, an hour’s hack and stable management. Pony summer camp takes place at the end of August (31st to 2nd September) and

In financially uncertain times, we all need to tighten our pockets and make sure we get value for money, so why rip out perfectly good units when you could simply replace the doors and drawers? It’s not just your pockets that will feel the benefits, but the environment too, with any waste wood that Dream Doors removes being used to create new, manmade boards!

Linda Matthews, known for her atmospheric paintings based on the coastline around Rinsey and Praa Sands, will be working with Richard Horner as they showcase their recent works that focus on local seascapes. Richard’s representational landscapes reflect his deep feeling for the Cornish coast, where he can often be seen scrambling about with sketchpad and camera in hand. His aim is to make you believe that you’re there, dipping your toes in the water; feeling the dizzying height of the cliffs. The event, which will take place from Saturday 26th August until Friday 1st September follows a very successful show in St Ives in June, and it’ll also include some beautifully crafted woodwork from Cornish artisan, Kevin Harris. A writers’
paradise Author Rachel Hickman explores the rugged landscape and magical coastline that have inspired many of our literary greats. WORDS BY
W
Rachel Hickman
hy is Cornwall a place of literary adventure? From its rugged moorland and ruined mining past to its high winding hedgerows and wreckers’ shores, Cornwall is so full of character as to be a character itself in the novels it inspires: contradictory and colourful – as well as mysterious and moody. Perhaps it’s because as a reader you feel as if you’ve arrived at the furthest tip of possibility and that time somehow stops at Land’s End. That stories set in Cornwall somehow stretch along a coastline that runs on forever; secrets tangled in old rope and seaweed, and stashed in caves guarded by the tide; where the weather defines the twists and turns of a plot. Literary Cornwall has a history that dates back to the myths of King Arthur and Tintagel. The story I love is Tristan and Iseult retold by Rosemary Sutcliffe and illustrated by Victor Ambrus. How valiant Tristan is sent on a mission to find a queen for his uncle, the King of Cornwall, but falls in love instead with a flame-haired Irish princess, Iseult – with heartbreaking consequences. If you go to Tintagel on the north coast and stand with your eyes closed to the Atlantic wind you can almost feel the presence of some mythical force.

My bookish Cornwall is as timeless and well-thumbed as the novels on a holiday cottage bookshelf. There’s a reason why Enid Blyton’s Famous Five are still sleuthing today, or The Island of Adventure works even now for children: its heroes Jack, Philip, Dinah and Lucy-Ann at Craggy-tops unearthing sinister goings-on on the mysterious Isle of Gloom when they stumble into an abandoned copper mine and tunnels under the sea. On a wet windy day stuck indoors, there’s nothing better than the page-turning excitement of imagining treacherous tides, coves and treasure. Another beloved modern classic for children set in Cornwall is Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising sequence. An ancient manuscript is found in the cottage where the Drew children are staying that leads them into a battle between the Light and the Dark, and a quest for the Things of Power with all the danger, magic and mystery that goes with that. The fictional village of Trewissick in the story is likely to have been inspired by Mevagissey, south of St Austell where the author used to stay. There’s a local headland to the north called Penare Point which sounds a little like Kemare, and another headland to the south, called Chapel Point.

Darkness and light pervade all Cornish stories and especially the novels of Daphne Du Maurier, bridging the gap between childhood and adult reading. I discovered Du Maurier’s novels as a teenager and then again in my twenties while on honeymoon touring Cornwall in an unreliable TR5. We arrived in St Mawes just as the afternoon light was fading and stumbled upon the Tresanton Hotel, long before it was transformed by the Polizzis. It was a time-travelling moment – the hotel had a dusty elegance with faded chintz bedrooms, including a small round box on the bedside tables that contained two digestive biscuits. It was April, cold and sunny, and in that moment I stepped into Daphne Du Maurier’s stout shoes and began dreaming of mysterious creeks, wreckers’ coves, bleak moors and gothic mansions. As a teen, I read Frenchman’s Creek first – a swashbuckling adventure with romanticised characters in which the writing is dreamy and languid. A fed-up and rebellious Lady Dona St Columb visits Navron, her husband’s remote estate, where she finds evidence that the property is being used by a notorious French pirate who has been prowling the coast. Exploring the sleepy, hidden creeks around Helford, she discovers that the Jean-Benoit Aubéry, is an altogether more exciting man than her husband.

its history back to the Normans. It played a significant role in the Civil War – as recounted in the book – and nowadays Boconnoc House and its surrounding estate is one of the most beautiful locations in Cornwall. Other Cornish adventures later in my life have included reading all 12 Poldark novels by Winston Graham in succession on a train while commuting from Winchester to work at Penguin Books, and then Harper Collins in London. The series is now immortalised for television, but nothing compares to the detail of the stories. Romance, intrigue, betrayal, and one of the most heart-breaking love triangles in modern fiction ensues as Ross falls in love with the high-spirited Demelza, and tries to build a better world while fighting his arch-enemy, the ruthless
The Jackson Foundation
But perhaps my favourite Du Maurier story is The King’s General; the first novel Du Maurier wrote while living at Menabilly, the real-life setting for her most famous novel, Rebecca, where it’s called ‘Manderley’. It tells of the enduring love between Honor Harris who is 18 when she first meets proud, reckless and captivating Richard Grenvile. Following a riding accident, Honor is reconciled to a life of disability on her own. As the English Civil war is waged, Richard rises through the ranks of the army. Years pass, until Sir Richard, now as a general serving King Charles I, finds her. Finally, they share their passion in the ruins of her family’s great estate on the storm-tossed Cornish coast. That estate exists: Boconnoc, which lies three miles east of Lostwithiel and can trace

financier, George Warleggan. The novels were set especially in and near Perranporth where Graham lived for more than three decades. And now, 25 years on, my own recently published first novel, One Silver Summer, was inspired by long holidays with my husband and children in and around the Roseland. I wrote it over a two-year period – much of it at Kerbenetty Cottage in Portloe looking out over the harbour. The coastal paths that my hero and heroine tread are those between Portloe and Carne, and Pendower, beaches, with a sharp diversion up the wooded valley towards Melinsey Mill. Trist House, my grand estate, is a place of fiction, but I admit to borrowing the name from a beautiful old rectory in Veryan. Much ‘essential’ writing time, and most of the edits, was spent ensconced by a fire or on the terraces of The Nare and Lugger hotels. Thinking time was spent walking the dog on Towan beach in all weathers; watching horses being exercised close to the coast path near Rosteague House.

Wherever we turn in Cornwall, we are fortunate to be surrounded by a hugely evocative landscape; one that has inspired many a great author and poet as the perfect setting to stage their adventures, immortalising it forever on the page. As we always say, nothing beats getting out to explore the magic of Cornwall firsthand, so we’ve suggested a few more locations to visit over the page. Who knows, you may even be inspired to put pen to paper yourself.

s we explore in this issue’s cover story, Cornwall has long been the backdrop for tales of adventurers, pirates, romance, and the lives of the people who live here. Central to these stories is often the landscape, both natural and manmade, whether harbours, moorlands, beaches, cottages or country houses. We’ve enlisted the help of the team at Savills Cornwall, who have managed the sales of some of the most beautiful and special properties in the county, both on the coast and in the countryside, to provide a guided tour of Cornwall’s finest homes. Located in the heart of Du Maurier country, Roskruge Barton (guide price £2,500,000) is a Grade II* Listed medieval manor near Manaccan, on the southern side of the river Helford, just a short distance from the stretch of water immortalised in Frenchman’s Creek. Parts of the house date from the 16th Century. It has been little changed since the 19th Century and represents a rare example of a wonderful country home in this part of Cornwall. The house has five bedrooms, and three reception rooms, including a breakfast room with a huge fireplace and log burner, as well as an attached guest annexe. There is a former water mill and associated buildings, which represent an excellent opportunity for conversion for a variety of purposes (subject to the necessary consents),
along with 44.5 acres of completely unspoilt woodlands, gardens and virgin meadows. Nearby Roskruge Barton Cottage, a wonderful whitewashed, three-bedroom cottage, is on the market with a guide price of £425,000. It is easy to imagine that the picturesque setting of Churchtown Cottage at Morval, near Looe, could act as the backdrop for a classic romantic love story. Just three miles from the south coast, in a tranquil, secluded valley, it offers the chance to own a beautiful four bedroom, Grade II Listed home (guide price £1,100,000), with an adjoining three bedroom cottage and detached cottage split into two further holiday cottages. Churchtown has 3.5 acres of park-like gardens which adjoin the grounds of the Grade I Listed St Wenna’s Church. In what could easily be imagined as a former pirates’ playground of wild seas, cliffs and caves in the rugged landscape

of southern Cornwall is Bosca (guide price £1,250,000), near Perranuthnoe. A charming house with wide sea views and around 300ft of direct water frontage, it has recently been refurbished and has two bedroom suites and two further bedrooms, and a roof terrace with views to the south and west. A separate cottage has two bedrooms and an attached studio/study. The grounds extend to two acres and include a meadow and sun terrace. This is just a small selection of the stunning homes across Cornwall currently listed with Savills. mmaculately presented throughout, there’s a real ‘house in the country’ feel to be enjoyed at Millstream Orchard. Three bedrooms comprise the current accommodation – one with its own ensuite – as well as an annexe, which is handy for hosting guests or housing dependent relatives. In the kitchen, you’ll find a Rayburn occupying its own red-brick archway and in the winter, as you and your guests sit around the table, weathering an Atlantic storm over a bottle of wine, this typical farmhouse kitchen really comes into its own. Outside, the formal gardens include a semicircular patio with a curved, Cornish-style stonewall, which in turn incorporates LED lighting, making it a lovely spot in which to enjoy the dusky hours of summer. Finally, and perhaps the icing on the cake, is the bench at the foot of the garden overlooking the stream. Surrounded by flora and fauna, this is a lovely spot to relax and meditate, especially on a fine summer afternoon. With all there is to offer on the north coast, including fantastic restaurants, watersports and some of the finest sailing waters in the UK, Millstream Orchard is a rare opportunity to enjoy the best of life in Cornwall, both on and off the water.

urrounded by lush woodland and countryside, Scawswater Mill offers seven bedrooms in total, across both the main Mill House and the converted Mill. The two are linked by a beautiful vaulted room, which is currently set out as a living area, enjoying its own inglenook fireplace and a conservatory at the far end, which allows natural light to spill in and fill the space. Authentic features throughout the Mill House are typical of a traditional Cornish country house, with flagstone slate flooring and multiple fireplaces reminding you of the 19th century history of this comfortable home. You’ll also find 16th century archaeology in the grounds, where there’s much to be enjoyed, from the raised lawn at the front of the house, to the main gardens at the rear. On one side are Idless woods and on the other, the river Allen, and it can often feel like there’s nobody else around in this tiny Cornish hamlet, great for anyone who loves a peaceful walk. A favoured location for anyone who wants a taste of country living but requires close proximity to high street names, a modern transport infrastructure and the convenience of Cornwall’s capital, Scawswater Mill might just be the solution for you.

T
he coast is an infinite source of inspiration, for artists, writers and photographers. There is something endlessly fascinating and alluring about the junction where land meets ocean that brings out some of the finest work in people. But often overlooked is the role it plays in architectural design. A trip around Cornwall’s stunning coastline will not only reveal galleries full of beautiful seascapes; indeed, if you look around you, you’ll find masterpieces of another kind perched on the clifftops. Creating new buildings is a responsibility, especially when considering that they are intended to last as permanent additions to the landscape. Not only must they represent the age in which they are built, they must stand the test of time, remaining sympathetic to their surroundings as fads come and go. When a location – like Cornwall – is so naturally beautiful, it ups the stakes, demanding a response that complements the landscape it inhabits. It is these thoughts that make Coastal Spaces such an exciting prospect. This Cornish design company, based out of the delightfully named Lighthouse Cottage in Wadebridge, is led by Sean Hodgson. Simply put, Sean and his team get coastal living instinctively and use their collective experience and creativity to design stunning
spaces that capitalise on the views our coast is blessed with, while make the living spaces truly luxurious and inviting. While Coastal Spaces’ designs are respectful of their environment, incorporating local natural materials and gently nodding to the past, they are by no means shrinking violets. Instead, you’ll find bold, daring pieces of architecture, with contemporary clean lines, at the very forefront of modern design. The team only ever work on a small number of projects at a time, to ensure they devote the necessary attention and focus to each one. “Through highly personal and careful consideration of location, setting and backdrop, Coastal Spaces brings a part minimalist and part modern architectural approach to exclusive waterside locations across the UK,” explains Sean. “From initial concept, through design and development, each project is unique and offers unprecedented levels of living space both internally and externally for those in search of a distinct coastal home.” To see an example of Coastal Spaces’ ingenuity, you need only look at current project Polurrian Bay Villas in the grounds of the popular luxury hotel in the cliffs above Mullion on the Lizard peninsula. These bright and spacious open-plan villas offer the very best in coastal living. With only six in the development,

this is your chance to own a stunning home in an extremely exclusive setting. Invoking the classic Edwardian seaside villas found across the coast, each villa is fronted with a large balcony, perfect for gazing out upon the Atlantic and the Celtic Sea. The South West Coast Path is quite literally on your doorstep, offering miles upon miles of stunning scenery to explore, before returning to your luxury space to enjoy cocktails as the sun melts into the horizon. Another wonderful advantage of the development is that each villa takes full advantage of the facilities at the Polurrian Bay Hotel, including both indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a sumptuous spa, and an Ofsted-registered crèche. What’s more you can participate in the leaseback scheme, meaning you can earn money from your property when you are not using it yourself – making it an attractive proposition financially too. With three of the six villas already reserved, you’ll want to get in quick if you want to secure a piece of the dream. Another deluxe development from Coastal Spaces is Una St Ives, just inland from Carbis Bay, regularly cited as one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Indeed, you’d be hard pressed to find a more wonderful location in which to relax and unwind. With an array of beaches on your doorstep, it’s within easy reach of
the hustle and bustle of St Ives, with its independent boutiques, bars, bistros and galleries, including the recently reopened Tate St Ives overlooking Porthmeor beach. Una St Ives comprises of a cluster of chic and contemporary eco houses, clad in wood and topped with sedan roofs, with warm rusty hues that change with the season. Each home is wonderfully bright and spacious, and features a balcony to make the most of indoor-outdoor living, savouring the quality of light that St Ives is famed for. The complex also boasts its own stateof-the-art gym, indoor swimming pool, steam room, Jacuzzi, and a sumptuous spa, so you can indulge in some much needed recuperation when not out enjoying all the area has to offer. To learn more about either of these developments, or to discuss a coastal dream of your own, contact Sean and the team from Coastal Spaces now.

hen it comes to kitting out your holiday home, it takes a lot these days to impress the most discerning guests. So, if you want to create a stunning bolthole without the stress, whether to enjoy yourself or to achieve the best return, it really does pay to speak to a professional design agency. With this in mind, Giorgi Holland, Lead Interior Designer of Iroka, gives us the lowdown on the team’s stunning renovation of No 16 St Nicholas Court, perfectly situated between both Porthminster and Porthgwidden beach in St Ives. “Iroka was recently contracted to refurbish this beautiful, spacious contemporary holiday apartment to the highest of standards,” explains Giorgi, “with a brief to offer maximum guest capacity with ease of living in maximum style.” The apartment has been finished with a sleek and contemporary style, subtly infused with a coastal feel. “Combining neutral tones and textures with the occasional splash works extremely well with warm oak detail on freestanding furniture,” says Giorgi. “Wood plank wallpapers on feature walls create a ‘beachey’ surf feel in keeping with the overall scheme.” For durability, ‘Parisian Pine’ whitewashed wood flooring from Amtico was laid in an elegant herringbone pattern throughout the living areas, whilst a super soft wool carpet fitted in the bedrooms for a cosy feel.
“A bespoke hotel style headboard was installed in the second bedroom, along with zip and link bed set in the third bedroom for maximum capacity. A combination of made-to-measure roman blinds and curtains were selected throughout the entire property. A combination of delicate sheers and full curtains were installed in the master bedroom for the ultimate privacy… and style of course!” A minimalist kitchen was designed individually with infinite storage solutions in mind. The tactile matt sky blue and white washed wood cabinets were installed by Iroka’s team of fitters, along with the durable yet cost effective work top product called Apollo. “This product is a 6mm solid through coloured mineral material,” says Giorgi, “with an acrylic polyester resin pigment base on a fibreboard subframe.” Finally, the outside space was transformed into a Mediterranean style courtyard, complete with a modern outdoor dining set in powder-coated aluminium and PVC chairs to ensure longevity against the elements. If you’d like help to create your perfect bolthole, speak to the team at Iroka today.

Elaine Skinner at Camellia Interiors walks us through maximising the letting appeal of your holiday home.
W
êBELOW
Pentire Apartment, proof that grey is versatile and can work with any style in any room
hether you’ve had a poor letting season or want to get more from your investment, now’s the time to plan ahead. Don’t over estimate the revenue you’ll get, and don’t under estimate the workload needed to generate bookings! Here are some top tips from Elaine, founder of interior design practice, Camellia Interiors.
Buy quality furniture that’ll be hardwearing Some items will need replacing regularly, so don’t buy top-end items that are costly to replace. “Mid-range is best, but don’t economise on the basics: good quality sheets, comfy beds, fluffy towels, power showers, a sturdy dishwasher and washing machine and a kitchen with everything a chef would need are all essential.”
Exceed expectations with your décor and furnishings “Remember, it’s not a hotel, it’s a home. Holidaymakers want to stay in a house that’s equal to, or better than their own. They want to revel in outstanding country and coastal locations and in interiors that complement these surroundings. Your property, irrespective of the theme, should have a consistent style and image, with stand-out features, stylish interior design and flawless décor.”
Don’t lock away all your personal items “Guests absolutely love personal touches that reflect your individuality and personality. Also, if your guests are paying high-end prices, then don’t mistrust them, either; treat them with respect and trust them with your personal, if not necessarily expensive items, and they’ll return the favour.”
Opt for neutral furnishings with colourful accessories to maximise your appeal. “Don’t just stick to white walls – it’s as bad as ‘80s magnolia! Be brave, make it feel like a home, not a run-of-the-mill show flat.” If in doubt, Elaine recommends using grey and getting a designer that’s experienced in layering to help achieve the right tone. Grey is so versatile that it can work with any style, anywhere. “I fell in love with it as soon as I tried it! My darkest favourite is Farrow & Ball’s Downpipe – it’s a bold, smoky hue.”
Don’t shy away from the unusual or quirky It’s all about attention to detail. Getting a designer to add touches of flair to your décor can make all the difference. Be an alternative to the run-of-the-mill holiday homes that saturate Cornwall. “Most importantly,” Elaine finishes, “enlist the help of a professional, pay the fees then relax and enjoy the increase in revenue and further bookings.”

framework A PERFECT
Add the ‘wow’ factor to a build or conversion with stunning bespoke oak frame from Carpenter Oak Cornwall.
T
im Simpson and Tom Jubb, both originally from Cornwall and keen to return to their roots, left the original Carpenter Oak in Devon, to set up their own, franchised model, Carpenter Oak Cornwall, which would also specialise in timber framed buildings but in addition, offer complete build projects across the region. The Cornish yard was set up near St Ives in 2014 and the company hasn’t looked back, particularly thriving in the accommodation and hospitality market. “We’ve seen a steady rise in enquiries from clients who are looking to tap into Cornwall’s ever growing tourism trade and make the most out of their own property,” explains Tom, “whether the conversion of a redundant barn or a new building to complement an existing commercial holiday cottage venture. Our clients really feel that an oak frame from us will give them that something ‘special’ to stand out from the crowd, in what is an increasingly competitive market.” An early client was Nancarrow Farm, near Zelah, which has developed from an existing, family-run pastoral farm into a luxurious wedding venue, complete
with rental accommodation and thriving restaurant using the farm’s homegrown produce. Carpenter Oak Cornwall designed and raised the oak-framed barn, which hosts regular feasts and wedding receptions, as well as converting an old chicken shed into a luxury bridal suite that stayed true to its agricultural roots. “Our customers are always blown away by the space for both getting ready in, and staying in,” explains Steve Chamberlain of Nancarrow Farm. “We chose Carpenter Oak Cornwall after they were initially recommended to us by a local architect and we’d absolutely use them again!” Another project, overlooking the north coast near Boscastle, was built as a second home and holiday let for Rick and Petrea. The four bay, traditional style oak frame includes an open-plan living area and mezzanine level above. “The feedback has been so positive,” says Rick, “people love the building, especially the relaxed warm feeling that the frame creates and the way the building sits in the landscape. Using the oak frame enabled us to use natural finishes throughout the house which adds a calmness and a space that you are happy to spend time in.”

Petrea adds: “The building has a timeless quality which enables it to sit comfortably in the old rural hamlet where it is situated. The sculptural quality of the building always wows visitors when they step inside, and people love the relaxed warm feeling that the frame creates. We wanted to create a beautiful home that was also both practical and sustainable. Carpenter Oak appealed to us, being a local business, using traditional skills and attention to detail. The whole process was well managed and precise without losing the personal touches that make such a difference.” Mike and Karen Chiffers, owners of Fingers Point near Ludgvan, returned to Cornwall and spent several years planning what to do with their existing barn, a former cowshed and latterly used as workshops. Carpenter Oak Cornwall took on converting the barn into a luxury holiday let, named after the nearby top of the hill where visitors would always point toward St Michael’s Mount. The conversion needed an entirely new roof structure and an oak frame fitted the Chiffers’s brief of creating something striking and high in quality whilst also being from a local supplier – just five miles
from the workshop. “Everyone loves the attention to detail everywhere you look, especially the oak work. We used Carpenter Oak Cornwall because they understood the attention to detail and ‘wow’ we were trying to create within a small area.” If you’re visiting Cornwall or are thinking about creating your own rental accommodation, seeing a Carpenter Oak Cornwall building in person is the best way to get a feel for how a timber frame can open up space and create flexible buildings that appeal to guests, depending on the size of the group or family. As well as domestic dwellings that you can rent out, you can also visit public buildings such as Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, with its newly completed oak framed gallery, The Cornish Arms near Padstow (reviewed in our last issue) or the Duchy Nursery near Lostwithiel.

Embrace indoor/outdoor living with the chic new range of homewares from local company, Kernow Metals.
A
healthy trend is spreading across the UK, encouraging people to embrace the indoor/ outdoor living enjoyed by many in warmer climates across the world. Local designers and outdoor heating suppliers are embracing this enthusiasm with everything from huge shelving units and outdoor fireplaces to entire outdoor kitchens being designed into the humble British home and garden. If anywhere in the UK is suited for this style of living, bringing the outside in and vice versa, then it is Cornwall, with miles of stunning coastline and countryside right on our doorsteps. One local company enjoying this growing trend is Kernow Metals in Wadebridge where the talented craftspeople have created all sorts of exciting outdoor furniture including galvanised steel dining tables, benches and fire pits. This is an interesting new direction for Kernow Metals which has been established for over 20 years and has made its name fabricating bespoke garden gates, rails, staircases and fires. Jamie from Kernow Metals explains: “We are working on a number of exciting projects for private clients from fireplaces that cover entire walls to spiral staircases. We wanted our bespoke craftsmanship to be available to a wider audience, hence the creation of our indoor/outdoor furniture
range.” We particularly love the stylish boot racks, ideal for drying and storing your boots following a day exploring the coast, and the perfect addition to any holiday home. We are also big fans of the chic hooped log stores, so you can rest assured that you’re well stocked for those chillier evenings getting cosy around the fire, while making a style statement at the same time! Kernow Metals recently joined forces with Kernow Fires, another Wadebridge based company with a reputation for attention to detail and helping to enhance some of Cornwall’s most beautiful homes. Together they combine their extensive expertise and wealth of knowledge to provide a comprehensive service for home improvements and installations, proving the age-old belief that great things happen when great talents pull together! To see more of the beautiful creations and bespoke commissions from the Kernow Metals team, head over to the company’s website and visit the gallery section. If you like what you see, and have a specific project in mind, call Dave and Jamie, to discuss your own outdoor or indoor living project.

We catch up with the team at Julian Foye, who reveal how white washing your walls can help achieve that ‘fresh start’ you’ve been looking for.

N
ot a fan of pattern and colour? Not everyone is. According to the team at Julian Foye, a white washed wall is a popular choice when the builders have left and you need to decorate a room. It’s popularised as a great way to start decorating when a fresh start is on the cards, as it’s at these times that we’re simply not ready to start investing in bold colour schemes. More often than not, we prefer to opt for something much more neutral. Eventually, you can begin to allow colour to creep in, but white walls allow a clean slate that we can fill in over time. Whatever your reason for choosing white, whether it’s to create a design statement with a modern, minimalist look, or to freshen up the walls without the worry of mismatching that unusual, bold colour you chose two years ago; white walls provide a clean look, one which has been working very well with Scandinavian trends in furniture and interior design, trends that are currently taking the industry by storm! Indeed, not all white walls are a reflection of uninspired imagination. The Julian Foye experts explain that, in fact, the opposite is true, as nothing quite sets off a piece of beautiful artwork like a brilliantly white wall, meaning your supposedly ‘unimaginative’ colour scheme actually opens you up to a world of creative opportunity. It is, quite literally, a blank canvas! Once your walls are dressed and ready, it’s time to think about some furniture. To offset those newly white walls, you’ll want to choose something that helps promote the ‘fresh’ feel of your space, while avoiding those gut-wrenching comparisons to a dentists’ waiting room. With this in mind, it can be hard to resist filling your room with
bright, colourful fabrics and dark, heavy furniture – many see this as a ‘quickfix’ solution to any negative comments, but the best bet is to seek advice from the experts, and those at Julian Foye are always on hand with the answers you need. You’ll find that each of the company’s four large showrooms is packed with modern furniture and accessories, manned by teams of professionals who know exactly how to get the most out of your chosen colour scheme. To complement your white washed walls, we’re told that adding a few lush green potted plants can help add life and cast stunning, natural shadows on the walls, while coloured glass ornaments will reflect and refract the natural light as it cascades in through your windows. Add a sumptuous rug to sink your toes into and, before you know it, the idea of a waiting room will have disappeared without a trace! So, if it’s high time you made a fresh start; if you’ve lost patience with your tired and drab interior, get yourself to one of the Julian Foye showrooms and see what the team can do for you.

t’s been a successful 2017 for the Good Life Joinery team and, after working on some very exciting projects, they’ve picked up some welcome recognition. The award, which came from the Local Authority Building Control (LABC), is titled ‘Best Change of Use for an Existing Building’ and was given for Good Life’s work on Hinterland House, a stunning holiday home just 11 miles from Bude, from the Classic Cottages portfolio. Managing Director, Stuart BowmanHarris tells us: “We’re delighted and totally surprised by the win. It’s always a great feeling to get praise for a good piece of work. We were nominated for this award, so it came completely out of the blue. To be shortlisted was amazing, and to actually win was just fantastic!” Impressively, this coveted award isn’t all the team has to shout about. Earlier this year, apprentice Ash Nightingale came third in the 2017 South West Skill Build competition, an impressive accolade considering this is his first year! Recently, this accomplished wood working firm also turned its oak framing expertise to making a Giant Story Chair for a local
primary school, which has been erected in a conservation area. “This was great fun to make.” Stuart explains. “It has hand carved, inspirational words on the chair components. Some of them the children have to search for and there are a few surprises too! It’s been a real hit.” The professional team also designs and makes kitchens, staircases and furniture, as well as windows and doors. So, if your home could do with an update but you’re not sure where to turn; with an impressive 2017 so far, perhaps Good Life Joinery can be of assistance?

COLOUR
We talk to interior design expert Sue Clark, from Inspirational Interiors, to find out the latest trends for adding an injection of colour to your home.
T
his season is all about adding a touch of vibrancy to your home, think rich jewel tones and upbeat colours. Going bold can be a daunting prospect for some but according to Sue it doesn’t need to be. “If using colour in your home feels a little scary then I would suggest using a single statement piece of furniture or adding some vibrant lighting. Even a couple of brightly coloured cushions can transform the feel of your home.”
LET THERE BE LIGHT Sue has herself recently been inspired by fabric designer Clarissa Hulse. “Here in the studio we sometimes struggle to find suitable lighting to co-ordinate with certain fabrics. We saw an image that included clever use of bright, patterned fabric on lampshades so we set about developing our own range.” Sue likes to combine her bright coloured or patterned shades with sheer embroidered fabrics and natural furniture. The juxtaposition of light and shade, with a spot injection of colour, can create a dramatic effect and Clarissa Hulse’s Calista collection is a great place to start.
IN THE MOOD Taking inspiration from photography can be a great starting point for adding that splash of colour. Creating a mood board using photographs, fabric swatches, magazine articles, buttons and ribbons can be useful in seeing what colours work with what textures. Take photographs of your room with the pieces that you want to keep and then pin your ideas and inspirations around them. This means you can easily try different colour ways on the board before transferring them to your room.

OVER THE WALL For the latest in room decoration Sue suggests using a fabulous wall panel. “They are all the rage,” says Sue, “not only are they a quick way of transforming your home, they turn your walls into a work of art! My current favourite is a stunning wallpaper panel, featuring whimsical goose-grass stems rising up through the design. Combined with three statement lights as the design reaches full height this creates a great impact in a room.”
BRILLIANT BOTANICALS If you want to take a softer approach to colour then mixing it with organic textures will create a more subtle effect. Harlequin fabrics has collaborated with Clarissa Hulse to create Lilaea, a vibrant and glamorous range of fabrics displaying Clarissa’s trademark style of contemporary botanical designs injected with intense colour – perfect for creating a statement in your home.
project, from inspiration to installation. At any point of the process, if you’re faced with a crisis of confidence or simply need an expert opinion, she’ll be there to take your hand and guide you. So, if your interior could do with some TLC but you’re not sure you’ve got what it takes to do it alone, seek the safe hands of Sue and let her do the hard work for you.

ç LEFT Subtle, organic textures are a fantastic way to achieve that ‘soft approach’ ë ABOVE Use images like this on your moodboard and get those creative juices flowing ê BELOW Taking time to dress your windows is always worthwhile!
ON THE CREST OF A WAVE The final aspect of transforming a room is dressing the windows. Statement curtains will bring the whole project together and Sue’s current favourite is the Silent Gliss Wave contemporary curtain. This unique curtain heading system from Silent Gliss turns traditional curtains into a striking modern design statement offering a contemporary curtain presentation that, when opened, stacks the curtains neatly and straight. They can be hand, cord or electronically operated with a wide range of fabric colours and styles to chose from. While some of you may be looking to completely revitalise your interior from the ground up, others may simply wish to add an extra touch or two to make their current colour schemes pop. Sue, who has a passion for all things interior design, loves guiding clients through every step of their home

FOR INTERIORS Introducing timeless elegance and functional style from Lucy Orr Interiors.
B
ased in Cornwall and passionate about the world of interior design and homebuilding, Lucy Orr works for clients all over the UK as well as overseas and has almost 20 years’ experience in property renovation and interiors. Growing up, Lucy was inspired by her mother, also a talented interior designer and seamstress, as well as her father, who was an avid collector of Scottish and Russian art. She tells us: “I grew up in a beautiful home in Scotland surrounded by a stunning collection of antiques, art and fabrics from around the world. We travelled a lot too, to the States, Europe and the Far East, so my influences stem from far and wide!” Describing her business, Lucy explains how it provides all you need to build and decorate your home. “I take on all aspects of the design process and personally oversee each project I work on, whether it’s for a new pair of curtains or the project management, interior design and decoration of a new build.” Impressively, Lucy doesn’t always stick to the same group of suppliers, choosing rather to source fabrics and furniture from varied manufacturers, depending on the brief. What’s more, when it comes to her style, she places a focus on transforming interiors so that they work in harmony with both the style of the building, and that of the clients’ belongings. “Most of my clients come to me by recommendation. I think what they value most is my work ethos and positive and happy approach to every project. It’s about taking the stress away from the client, as much as it is about delivering a first-class service and making everything look fantastic.” This September, Lucy will be opening her new design studio and shop, Lucy Orr Interiors, in Rock on the rugged north coast. If you’re looking for help with any project, however big or small, why not get in touch or pay her a visit?

Stunning bespoke blinds from Westcountry Blinds, lovingly crafted using the latest technology from the Hayle workshop.
I
sn’t it great when you can control things with the touch of button? Today, our homes are increasingly automated, giving us more time to enjoy the things that really matter. The team at Westcountry Blinds achieves this with its commitment to making our homes both beautiful and functional through enabling automation to curtains and blinds. The company, which was set up over 16 years ago, draws on over 25 years of experience in the industry, and produces bespoke curtains and blinds, the majority of which are created on site in Hayle, allowing strict control over the entire process. The Westcountry Blinds team has noticed a significant increase in demand from both new and existing customers to install powered blinds in their homes and offices. So, keen to keep a finger on the pulse, we catch up with the team, to discover more about the products and their inherent benefits. “We’ve invested in the latest powered technology on the market to enable us to bring a product which is totally child safe, easy to install and incredibly easy to use.”

When building a new home, a mainspowered option can be specified with all wires concealed to retain a clean, contemporary look and feel. If, however, you are fitting powered blinds to your current home, then battery-powered options can be supplied with the battery pack sitting neatly behind the headrail. Powered blinds can be fitted to a range of blinds including LiteRise, roller, Duette, vertical and Velux blinds. The team works closely with each client, tailoring the solution depending on your specific requirements, considering factors such as how far the blinds will drop and heaviness of the material used. Westcountry Blinds has teamed up with industry leader Somfy to create the motorised mechanism for its automated blinds, which are all made on site in the Hayle workshop. These nifty motorised solutions are completely scalable, allowing new equipment to be added as required, without disrupting the original installation. The team’s mission is a simple one: to harness technology to make your home an even more enjoyable and comfortable

Range conversion by one of the fully trained engineers é INSET Looks neat and saves money!
I
’ve stepped across the threshold of many different Cornish homes. Some have been new, some old and some that deftly infuse the old and traditional with the contemporary and modern. Something that always struck me as typically ‘traditional’ was where a house had a range cooker – responsible not just for cooking, but for heating the home, too. This ‘all-in-one’ ability, I’ve always thought, gives a space a feeling of comfort and ease. There’s a warm sense of tradition exuded by a range cooker that can help round the most modern home off with that desirable country-home feel – something that many aspire to and, in some cases, move to Cornwall to achieve. The most common misconception with range cookers, however, is that they’re of the ‘old school’ and are comparatively inefficient next to more modern heating solutions. This is where Cornish Cooker Conversions comes in. If you’re undergoing a kitchen renovation or you simply want to make the most out of your range cooker, the team can convert it to run on electricity, keeping costs down, thus making it far more efficient. Converting to electric means you can independently control the top oven and both hobs to suit your cooking needs, while improving heat-up times, meaning you’re not left waiting around – especially useful if you have guests! Using the energy as and
when you need it will help you save money by reducing running time, meaning that the volatile prices of oil and gas are two less things to worry about! So how does it work? The ElectricKit converts the heat source to electric, doing away with the cast mass of the combustion chamber and flue ways, giving you the freedom to use the energy where it’s needed, hence the improved heat up times. The hobs work independently from each other, as does the oven from the hobs, so there’s no need to use everything at once. An electric conversion gives you the chance to cook with precision by adding a temperature control feature. You can even control your range cooker from your phone using an app to turn it on and off – modern standards indeed! Cornish Cooker Conversions is an independent company, with a team that are experts when it comes to making the most of your specialist oven. So, if you find your range cooker is ramping up excessive running costs, perhaps it’s time you considered an ElectricKit conversion.

B
ased on Water-Ma-Trout industrial estate in Helston, Collington & Co operate in Cornwall, installing a whole range of conservatories including Georgian and Victorian, as well as double glazing and replacement windows and doors in all different styles. Recently, the team proudly announced the inclusion of the Bygone range – a collection of high end, timber effect, sliding sash windows. Bygone windows are the ideal replacement for your original box sash windows. They combine the low-maintenance and energy efficiency of modern materials with the classic aesthetics and traditional design features of timber. But what makes Bygone stand out from other ranges? Firstly, the attention to detail in this collection is truly exceptional and what’s more, they are so authentic that the windows have been specified and approved in conservation areas nationwide, where maintaining traditional aesthetics is crucial. For hundreds of years, traditional sliding sash windows have been a feature of period properties, but they can be high maintenance, draughty, difficult to clean and very inefficient. The Bygone Collection – designed to create an authentic reproduction of the traditional sash window, but made with modern materials – is perfect for proud owners of period properties, enabling them to retain their home’s special charm while bypassing many of the previous challenges. Collington and Co are exclusive stockists of the Bygone Collections in Cornwall, joining the national network of premier partners, a partnership based on shared values; quality, honesty and products that are built to last. Every window is made bespoke for individual clients, ensuring the windows are a perfect fit and suited to each customer’s personal preferences. The Bygone range includes the Symphony, Harmony and Melody collection, each offering a huge variety of features, including: wood foil finish, bespoke furniture in a wide range of colour and timber style butt joints, as well as displaying modern performance, being energy efficient and
Secured by Design approved. They’re also incredibly low maintenance, with a tilt-in facility that allows for easy cleaning. Indeed, what the team says is true: You won’t believe it’s not timber!

The life of luxury We take a look at the exclusive Oyster Bay, set in the tranquil north Cornish countryside.

You’ll find first-class facilities at the park as well as some of Cornwall’s most luxurious lodges
ark Leisure, the company behind Oyster Bay, prides itself on creating holiday environments that you’re guaranteed to love and return to, year after year. Owning a luxury lodge with Park Leisure opens you up to a luxury holiday lifestyle that’s always aspiring to get better, something that’s fundamental to the company ethos. Testament to this is Oyster Bay, which, by the way, is just minutes from the beach. You’ll find first-class facilities at the park as well as some of Cornwall’s most luxurious lodges. There’s a feeling of exclusivity here; a feeling that you’ve been let in on one of Cornwall’s best-kept secrets. For instance, when it comes to storing your surf and wet gear, there’s an owners’-only surf and wetsuit store, as well as a maintenance and drying service, allowing you to lock up and leave your kit when you’re not hitting the beach. There’s also an indoor leisure complex, complete with pool, owners’ lounge and an outdoor sun deck – a wonderful spot to soak up some Cornish sun while you sup at
something cold. Also on offer – and foodies, listen up – is The New Inn, the park’s very own pub, just a two-minute walk up the road. Here you can choose from a delicious menu that offers something to satisfy every taste and appetite, using only the freshest, local produce. When it comes to choosing the right lodge for you, you’re spoiled for choice. Your options include everything from modern, sleek kitchens, to deluxe bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and even decking. And, once you’ve chosen the perfect luxury lodge for you and are deciding on what to do, there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained, as well as an exclusive Concierge service that’ll see to every last detail of your itinerary. The adrenaline seekers in your family will find what they’re looking for with plenty of watersports available at Perranporth and Newquay, while those who prefer to take things easy will want to take a dip in the pool, before sampling the fruits of Oyster Bay’s private monthly wine club. Within easy reach of some of Cornwall’s finest beaches most popular attractions, Oyster Bay is waiting to welcome you to your new home from home. Isn’t it time you led a life of luxury?

Embrace the Cornish lifestyle like never before with a luxurious and contemporary lodge from Charteroak.
olidaying in Cornwall is not only a fantastic way to escape city life; it’s a chance to immerse yourself in a lifestyle that’s found nowhere else in the UK. As opposed to the city, where life is dominated by industry and where to live is to be busy – whether you’re commuting to work or going out for a drink – life in Cornwall runs at a much gentler pace. The only downside with holidaying here is that, by the time you settle into your accommodation and ease yourself into life by the sea, whether it’s in a plush hotel or charming bed and breakfast, it’s almost always nearly time to go again! For this reason, owning a luxury lodge in some of the most beautiful reaches of Cornwall isn’t just a fantastic way to holiday or to gain additional income, it’s an investment in family holidays to come; a guarantee that, as soon as you cross the border and arrive at your lodgings, you’ll feel immediately at ease, in the comfort of your own second home. Luxury holiday specialist, Charteroak, has spent the last decade creating stunning holiday homes in some of the most
spectacular locations, in the south west of England. In fact, the company’s approach, known as ‘the Charteroak experience’, delivers the very best quality lodges, providing you not only with memorable holidays for years to come, but with a second home that yields excellent rental performance. Charteroak holds two sites in Cornwall – Stonerush Lakes and Southern Halt – and each has new lodges available to buy now with prices ranging from £194,950 to £269,950. Both set in the unspoiled south of Cornwall, loved for its serene seascapes, beaches and the aforementioned relaxed way of life, a lodge at either of these locations puts you in great stead to maximise your time in Cornwall. Stonerush Lakes, a 28-acre site that offers a wide range of lodges, each with individual character, is hidden in the local landscape. Each lodge enjoys a wonderful location, whether it’s next to a lake, beside the fast flowing stream or set back into a sun-drenched hillside. The emphasis here is on contemporary family living, and each home is designed to enhance its surroundings, capturing uninterrupted

views over idyllic countryside via floor-toceiling windows. From the site, the riverside town of Fowey, accessed via the Bodinnick Ferry, is just seven miles away, as is the fishing port of Looe, where those who are prepared to rise early can see the morning’s catch being auctioned on the quay. Southern Halt also offers a choice of outstanding, detached holiday homes, all set to a magnificent backdrop, and owners here can make the most of secluded hideaways, cascading waterways and stunning views that are typical of south Cornwall. And, for those of you who like to sample the delights of fresh, local produce, there’s plenty on offer in the outlying villages that surround Southern Halt, most of which have their own charming country pub. For us, there are many things that make Charteroak stand out from the crowd, from the exclusive, low-density style of living that’s become somewhat of a company trademark, to the fully managed letting service that allows you to reap the rewards of a holiday let without any of the
administrative stress. But, as we always say, don’t just take our word for it – get in touch and find out for yourself!

Our five-step guide to buying your very own Cornish holiday home, with a little help from the experts at Peter Bull Resorts.
I
f you’re joining the ranks of those who’ve decided to buy a holiday home, Peter Bull Resorts has helped us create this simple five-step guide to buying a holiday caravan or lodge.
open plan is very popular, but if you have kids, some separate space may well be needed. And, if your budget is tight, opting for a pre-loved caravan may be a more viable option.
Choose your location Location is crucial to the enjoyment of your holiday home, so choose wisely. Of course, the distance from your home needs to be considered, however it’s crucial that you love the location, meaning looking slightly further afield can often be worthwhile! Cornwall has something for everybody, whether you’re looking for beaches, watersports, fine dining or fresh crab on a quayside.
Running costs Like many major purchases, it’s not just the initial cost you need to consider, but those of running and upkeep, too. All holiday parks have site fees, which vary from park to park. Maintenance costs are generally low, as modern caravans are solidly built, but you’ll certainly need to factor in the cost of utilities, and insurance is essential!
Decide which holiday park is right for you Not all holiday parks are created the same. Some are better for families, while others lend themselves more to couples looking for peace and quiet. There are other practical considerations to be made, too. For instance, is the site open all year round? Peter Bull Resorts’ parks all have a 12-month season, meaning you can holiday whenever it suits you. Find a holiday home that meets your needs Lodges and static caravans come in many shapes and sizes, ranging from budget options right the way through to large, luxurious lodges. Think about the layout;
Read the small print The Peter Bull team says: “Always read the license thoroughly before putting pen to paper. The purchase agreement outlines the rights and responsibilities of you and the park, so you want to be happy with all the aspects!” And that’s it! To find out more about purchasing a static caravan or lodge at one of Peter Bull’s Cornish holiday parks, why not get in touch? You never know, it could turn out to be your best buy yet!

ENDLESS HOLIDAYS Franchis Holiday Park – a gateway to the Lizard, the wild and ruggedly beautiful peninsula in west Cornwall.
S
ituated in the heart of the Lizard peninsula, Franchis Holiday Park is just a short drive from the village of Mullion, with its pubs, shops, golf club, harbour and nearby sandy beaches, including Poldhu and Polurrian cove. Indeed, it’s perfectly placed for exploring the stunning scenery of west Cornwall; for getting out on the water on the Helford river; for lacing up your walking boots, hitting the glorious coast paths and drinking in the dizzying views across the Atlantic. The park, which offers a variety of holiday homes as well as pitches for tents and tourers, is perfect for getting away from it all, with outside lighting and facilities kept to a minimum, adding to that ‘close to nature’ feeling that campers come back for, time and time again. Owning a holiday home at Franchis means you can get away from the hustle and bustle
of everyday life, as often as you like, for 11 months of the year. And, in addition to the seven privately owned static caravans already on the outskirts of the park’s woodland, the Franchis team recently announced The Meadow – a development of just 14 holiday lodges, separate from the touring area, on a plot that slopes gently down towards the woodland stream. The development is only just underway, meaning there are still 12 plots available, with a good range of lodges to choose from, from makers including Willerby, Swift, Atlas and ABI. All lodges come supplied to residential standards, with central heating and double glazing already included. If you simply can’t wait to buy your slice of Cornish holiday paradise, there’s a twobedroom Swift Chamonix lodge ready to be moved into, commanding a fabulous plot overlooking the stream, with optional extras that include a triple Velux window over the front. Why not contact the Franchis team and arrange a viewing? If you’re looking to invest in your lifestyle; in something that you'll enjoy year after year, there’s nothing quite like a holiday home at Franchis Holiday park for capitalising on west Cornwall’s unique and, quite frankly, unrivalled beauty.

hy settle for the ordinary and everyday, when you could enjoy an experience that is truly unique? It’s a question oft asked, yet seldom acted upon. One enterprise that has geared its entire ethos around creating an experience that is anything but ordinary is the Artist Residence collection of boutique hotels and restaurants. Originating in Brighton, the group has now expanded to Penzance, London, Oxfordshire, and will be opening a location in Bristol in 2018. Even as the family has grown, each location has retained its individuality, while maintaining a shared set of values and aesthetic. Owners Justin and Charlie have carefully selected unique buildings including a former boot factory and thatched manor house, all in stunning locations, working alongside British artists to inject them with their own unique and evolving style. Today we’re in Penzance to visit Artist Residence Cornwall and meet Head Chef Gareth Spencer of its accompanying smokehouse restaurant, The Cornish Barn. This Georgian townhouse offers 23 individually styled bedrooms, in addition to a separate cottage for up to six people. Upon entering the hotel, it’s clear that you are in for a real treat. The décor is
striking, yet playful, combining original and limited edition artworks with upcycled and vintage furniture and industrial light fittings, rich in colour and textures. Many of the bedrooms are adorned with vivid murals created by artists such as Jo Peel, some evoking the seaside location, others with bright geometric shapes. A personal favourite, the Gallery Loft, features original canvasses by local artist Mat McIvor. Its location makes it the perfect base to explore all that the west of Cornwall has to offer, from nearby St Michael’s Mount, to the bars and boutiques of St Ives. Equally, it’s an ideal stopover point if you’re travelling to the Isles of Scilly from Penzance or Land’s End. Why not top and tail your visit to the isles, with a stay at Artist Residence and a hearty meal at the Cornish Barn? You’ll be pleased to discover that the food is as appealing as the building itself. The Cornish Barn is open all day for breakfast, lunch and dinner – fast becoming a firm foodie destination in its own right, whether or not you happen to be staying the night. The food is rustic, wholesome, and refreshingly unfussy in approach, focussing on big flavours and local seasonal produce. The restaurant features its own smokehouse, where meats on the grill menu are smoked using ‘Big Green Egg’ cookers, from the succulent

" beer can chicken to the melt-in-the-mouth lobster; sirloin steak to home-smoked barbeque belly pork ribs. Head Chef Gareth Spencer takes inspiration from the worldclass produce that Cornwall is increasingly celebrated for, finding simple ways to serve it. “It’s about letting the quality speak for itself,” explains Gareth. “We focus on using and showcasing local produce because we are lucky to be surrounded by some of the best food the country has to offer!” Take the new Sunday brunch menu, for instance. With a hearty mix of breakfast favourites such as black pudding, poached eggs and avocado as well as beefburgers, sweet chilli and even skinny fries, brunch on Sundays is a fantastic way to kickstart your afternoon, especially if you’ve slept in late. You can even go bottomless, which means unlimited Prosecco, mimosas or bloody Marys from 11am until 3pm! To complement the food, The Cornish Barn stocks an impressive selection of drinks, from craft beers to crisp wines and fruity cocktails. Once again Cornwall is well represented, from the coffee roasted in county by The Cornish Coffee Company and homegrown Tregothnan tea, to the Curio and Tarquin’s Gin, and St Ives’ own Dead Man’s Fingers rum. What’s more, pop along to happy hour, Sunday to Friday, from 5pm
to 7pm, to enjoy 50% off selected drinks. The Cornish Barn also hosts regular music nights, showcasing an expertly curated selection of both local and travelling artists. There are two gardens: a large beer garden with its own manned bar, perfect for those balmier evenings, plus a secret terrace garden, while inside is wonderfully cosy for those chillier evenings when you want to snuggle up by the fireside. It becomes clear that in Artist Residence and The Cornish Barn, Justin and Charlie have worked tirelessly to create an allday and evening location, with various break-out spaces meaning there’s always somewhere you can escape to and immerse yourself in the atmosphere, whatever your mood and whatever the weather. It’s an approach that encompasses the whole company – building a quality and unique experience that you won’t find anywhere else. Here’s to the nonconformists. Long may their reign continue!

The Square opens at 11am, with lunch served from 12pm to 2pm. If you’re looking for a lighter bite, you can now enjoy the light afternoon lunch menu from 3pm to 5pm. Being a popular haunt
for dinner, between 6pm and 9pm, we recommend booking to ensure you don’t miss out. It’s also the ideal place to create the perfect picnic for a walk of the coast path or trip to the beach. Pop into the Deli and Ice cream Emporium for homemade ice creams, Cornish cheeses and a selection of Cornish gifts and produce. Bon appétit! s p i h c e h T ARE UP! Third generation fish fryer Phil Geary of Portreath’s Atlantic Café explains how his family followed their dream to the Cornish coast.
S
urely most visitors to Cornwall harbour a wistful dream of one day laying down roots. The Geary family did just this, swapping the north west of Manchester for the north coast of Cornwall to take over the Atlantic Café in Portreath. “I first visited to work the season in Newquay when I was 21 and instantly fell in love with it,” explains Phil Geary. “Since then, I always knew I’d live here, one day. My wife, Marie, and I have always tried to come down at least once a year with our three children, even if only for a night – we had to get our Cornwall fix, no matter how short!” After spotting the Atlantic for sale online, the dream became serious. “It played on my mind for weeks, so one night I said to Marie: ‘Come on, we are going to Cornwall to have a look.’ We drove through the night, arriving in Portreath at first light; we turned the corner at the top of the hill and couldn’t believe or eyes!” Having made the leap, there have been no regrets. “What we love most is the ability to spend time together as a family on the beach, enjoying the views and sunsets. Porthcurno and the Minack Theatre are stunning… for the kids to be running around on that beautiful beach in their school uniform is a pretty unreal experience, something I never thought I’d see! But to be biased, Portreath is fantastic – so laid back, with lovely walks, and the sunsets are outstanding.”
For Phil, fish and chips are truly in the blood, so the move to Cornwall is a match made in heaven. “Even though my grandparents and parents have been in the fish and chip trade since the 1930s and I’ve been eating them all my life, it’s still my favourite thing on our menu. You just can’t beat haddock, chips, mushy peas and Irish curry!” But there’s plenty more to enjoy at the Atlantic, as Phil explains. “We try to offer something to everyone, all presented in a friendly-family, chilled-out atmosphere – whether it’s a coffee by the fire, breakfast with friends in a booth or fish and chips with a bottle of fizz! We’ve just started selling daily fresh fish to take home, including live crab and mussels.” The Gearys are living proof that every dream is worth following, especially if it leads to Cornwall!

AN AFTERNOON
afloat
Relatively new to the waters around Porthleven, my brother takes me out aboard the Bridie Jean to see if we can’t catch ourselves some supper.
A
s we ease our way out of port, Ben calls “Grab the fenders, Dan!” Used to fend off wandering boats as they bob listlessly in the gentle waters of the harbour, these bright orange buoys have no use once we hit open water, so as Ben begins to up the ante with the throttle, in they come. I look to my left, up at the iconic Porthleven clock tower, before gazing along the pier, where I see a man obviously enjoying the pleasant afternoon from his foldout chair. The tip of his fi shing rod arcs slightly as he tightens gently up to his bait, presumably presented just off the rocky shelf below.
WORDS BY
Dan Warden
To my right, paddle boarders and surfers sit above Porthleven’s famed reef break, waiting for the next set to roll in, and ahead of me, at the helm, stands Ben, my older brother of nearly three years. This is the stuff of dreams for boys like us, having grown up fi shing along west Cornwall’s coastline. It’s funny; not so long ago, Ben and I wouldn’t have been found in the same room together, not to mention unaccompanied on a boat and heading out to sea, yet here we are – two brothers, with nothing between us and the open sea besides a rolling deck and a younger sibling’s trust in his elder. As Porthleven disappears behind us and begins to blend into the industrial landscape of the coast, I call up to my captain for the afternoon: “What’s the plan then?” “I don’t mind,” he responds, more concerned with the display on the fi shfi nder. He has a few marks that we could head for, but still being quite new to this, he opts for a wreck that he’s already managed to locate and that’s only around eight miles out. “Only,” he says, his grin betraying his brotherly delight at my not-so-unperturbed expression. I steel myself for the trip ahead as I look out over the open expanse of water surrounding us, water that, according to the depth gauge, is in excess of 200 feet!

ç FAR LEFT Leaving Porthleven behind us ç LEFT The biggest of the trip falls to Ben! ê BELOW At the helm, Ben’s sea legs are far sturdier than mine
Ben explains that the locals’ knowledge has been invaluable in helping his confi dence to grow. They’ve told him where to head for and where to avoid; where to go at high tide and where to leave well alone when it’s low. They’ve even shown him the best knots for his lures! Most importantly, as someone who’s never owned a boat before, they’ve given him the confi dence to forge ahead, away from the shelter of the harbour, and to start discovering the Cornish coast for himself. He goes on, his smile now fully formed, telling me that there are hours of fun to be had out on the water – and you don’t just have to spend it fi shing. Wherever your mooring is, you’ll soon begin to get a feel for the local waters; in no time you’ll start unearthing their secrets, from calm, secluded creeks to crystal-clear snorkelling spots. The best part is that, far from the madding crowd, you’ll get an overwhelming sense of exclusivity, as if you’ve been let in on some of Cornwall’s best-kept secrets. A few chilled hours go by, fi lled with catch-up conversations and brotherly wisecracks (after all, catching the fi sh of the day is something to brag about), before we fi nally pinpoint the wreck and start catching a few more. Eventually, Ben tells me it’s time to turn back.
His instinct is impeccable and as we begin eating up the miles back to shore, the sea starts to grow increasingly agitated – perhaps rueing the disappearing sun as it edges beneath the horizon. More likely is that Ben made the right call, even if his younger brother will never admit it.

Fast-forward three days. It’s the Cornwall Living staff barbeque and thankfully, after boldly promising fi sh for all, I’ve got at least something to show for my efforts. Haddock is on the menu – a fi rm favourite – as well as pollock, and it’s not long before the herb butter starts melting, sizzling on the coals and sending wafts of fl avour across the beach. This is defi nitely my favourite way to enjoy seafood – sitting on the beach with a simple disposable barbeque, a local ale or two to hand.
I get a distinct feeling of satisfaction as I peel back the foil and get a look at the tender fl akes of fi sh, glistening with juices and speckled with herbs. Perhaps it’s the ‘pat on the back’ feeling of having hunted and gathered, or maybe I’m just pleased not to be empty handed. Either way, with a whole host of other species in our seas to be caught and with the idea of self-sustenance and ‘farm to fork’ dining getting ever more popular in Cornwall, I’d strongly encourage you to give it a go, too!

KEEPING IT SIMPLE METHOD
To prepare my fish, I simply mix butter, chopped fennel and parsley, before spooning it over the scored fillets and slotting in some lemon wedges. Wrapping them in foil before placing them on the grill helps seal in all the flavours and when finished, which doesn't take long, they’re a delightful addition to any barbeque, even as the main course!
When it comes to fish, it’s important to do your research. Some have their own distinct flavour that you don’t want to overpower; some, like pollock, are quite bland but very malleable, meaning they can be infused with a wide variety of tastes and aromas. Don’t be afraid to be creative, either. My recipe is very simple, but just one search on Google can yield enough results to fill that blank recipe book you’ve been meaning to dust off.

DISCOVER MORE Don’t just rely on your local restaurants’ specials board, when you could catch one of these species for yourself. There are more, but here are some of my favourites: • Cod • Sea bass • Plaice • Turbot • Brill • Black bream • Mackerel
Teach yourself! When it comes to filleting fish, Ben tells me: “Just go on Youtube. There are loads of tutorials on how to do it, and for individual species, too.”

Court House, Padstow Many visit Cornwall to discover its fascinating tapestry of maritime history, for which Court House in Padstow – a truly luxurious and historical property that’s coming soon to the already impressive Cornish Horizons portfolio – is absolutely perfect. Grade II listed, with a large lawned garden and gorgeous views across the Camel estuary, Court House sleeps ten in indulgent comfort and style, putting them in prime position to enjoy local delights such as Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant and all that Padstow’s beautiful quayside has to offer. In fact, the house recently underwent a complete renovation, bringing what’s believed to be Padstow’s second oldest building firmly into the 21st century. Rumour has it that it was once home to Sir Walter Raleigh, a famed mariner, courtier, soldier, poet and explorer, who also served as Warden of Cornwall. In 1588, after hearing news of the impending invasion by the Spanish Armada, he used Court House as his central office for the collection of dues and taxes, while orchestrating the strengthening of Cornwall’s coastal defences. Raleigh led a fascinating life, but we’d hate to spoil the story. Why not get in touch with Cornish Horizons and discover this enthralling chapter of Cornish coastal history for yourself?

Situated beautifully on the south coast, the foodie haven and historic fishing harbour, Porthleven is just ten minutes away, and just 15 minutes the other way is the mile-long sandy beach of Praa Sands, meaning you can enjoy the best of both! The coastal path along this stretch of coastline is varied and dramatic and along it you’ll find the iconic Wheal Prosper mine engine house at Rinsey (used in the filming of Poldark), as well as Prussia Cove, a haunt for real smugglers many years ago. You are also on the doorstep of the Lizard peninsula and the Helford, and 25 minutes away are St Ives and Falmouth. The hardest part will be knowing where to start!

ohn Bray and Partners, a specialist north Cornwall estate and holiday letting agency, has been holiday letting and managing properties in Rock, Daymer Bay, Polzeath and Port Isaac since 1971. The business started when local Cornishman and postmaster John Bray was first asked to act as a trusted key holder for a few houses in Rock village whose owners allowed friends to come and stay. A holiday letting business was soon born, which was later expanded into an estate agency. The business has grown substantially in line with the rise in popularity of the area. As from the offset, excellent customer service remains at the core of the business. “With a team of 32 permanent staff on hand we can put your property first ensuring the appropriate care and attention that you
would expect,” says Alex Roads, a Director at John Bray Cornish Holidays, thereby ensuring owners and guests, buyers and sellers receive a personalised service. Fellow Director Josephine Ashby adds, “we are big enough to cope with our growing instructions, but small enough to care and with more staff per letting house that we look after, we are able to offer the utmost care and attention for both our owners and their properties.” The friendly local John Bray team is professionally qualified and includes: maintenance, housekeeping, bookings, marketing, client accounts, admin, tradespeople, chartered surveyors and building technicians. That, coupled with excellent supplier contacts, means John Bray is well placed to offer a unique service for second homeowners who live out of county. With offices in Rock and Port Isaac, both located within approximately five minutes of every property the team sell, manage or let, John Bray and Partners are centrally located for their owners’ and sellers who find it handy to speak to someone in person, as well as guests and buyers who pop in to talk to them face-to-face about their requirements. With local knowledge that is second to none, they are the ‘go-to’ agents for anything within this beautiful five-mile radius of the Camel estuary.

DID YOU KNOW? Over the course of the Foundation’s last exhibition, a beautiful Kurt Jackson canvas – designed to be broken up and sold as 100 individual, smaller paintings – helped raise over £20,000 for Surfers Against Sewage and the fantastic work they do to keep our sea clean.

Open to all, The Jackson Foundation is a unique and ambitious art space that both celebrates the arts and champions the natural world.
his September, the Foundation will once again be working in partnership with a variety of environmental and non-profit organisations to host its annual programme of quality contemporary exhibitions. Kurt Jackson is renowned for his work that reflects a deep connection with natural history and the world around us, and the Foundation allows visitors to see the world through Kurt’s eyes. Open Wednesday to Saturday, the Foundation is housed in an ex-industrial building in the thriving, former mining town of St Just-in-Penwith, and was set up by Kurt and his wife Caroline. Impressively, entry is free to the public, meaning you can see his eclectic range of artistic expression – spanning painting, poetry, sculpture, installation and film – as often as you like. Subtly soundtracked by a range of musical genres, from Thelonious Monk and Ethiopian legend Mulatu Astatke, to string quartet covers of David Bowie and Radiohead, this buzzing gallery is friendly, unpretentious and, most importantly, of appeal to all ages. Husband and wife team, Fynn and Zinzi Tucker run the show, all of which is powered by an array of high-efficiency solar panels and ground-source heat pumps. The Foundation delivers paintings around Cornwall via two zero emission, fully electric cars – also charged by solar panels – making the whole operation a very green affair.
In addition to all of this, the Foundation provides employment for locals, raises awareness and helps fund groups that are working to protect the environment. This year’s project – Cot: A Cornish Valley – opens on Saturday 2nd September and is to display an exciting and ambitious collection of paintings and sculpture, all focussed on this small, most westerly of valleys in Cornwall. For the project, the Foundation has partnered with the Camborne School of Mines (University of Exeter), which is offering its insight into the geology of the valley and its beach. It’s also teamed up with the RSPB and its Cornwall Chough Project, which is aimed at increasing the number of chough-friendly habitats in the valley and around the Cornish coast. Fynn tells us: “By partnering with environmental groups, we’re able to find interesting ways to encourage visitors to link the potentially abstract (for instance marine litter), to the slightly more tangible, such as the devastating impact it can have on the coast. Without being too ‘preachy’, we like to think we show how even the individual can help improve the situation.”

or artist Tim Cotterill, the shiny little frogs found in the secluded woods of his childhood in the English countryside were the beginning of a life-long fascination that has led him to be known as The Frogman. Tim’s much-admired bronze sculptures perfectly capture the whimsical character, jewel-like quality and pure joy of these beautiful little creatures. Quay Art in Padstow houses the Frogman Collection, having achieved Platinum gallery status, as one the world’s top selling galleries. It displays over 100 frogs at any time, as well as other bronze sculptures produced by the Frogman foundry, such as the popular ‘Lazy River’ kingfisher, regularly shipping to collectors nationwide. As Roger from the gallery explains, “We are delighted to present these captivating, colourful and expressive sculptures so more people can appreciate the creativity and craftsmanship of Tim Cotterill.” While appearing to have been made from glass, these highly sought after collectors’ items are actually incredibly heavy, having been cast in solid bronze. They’re created following The Egyptian Wax Method and a six-step process that finally results in the stunning jewel-like patina. Check out the fascinating video on Quay Art’s website to discover more. Each Frogman sculpture is individually finished, signed and numbered as part of a
worldwide limited edition set. Quay Art will issue a certificate of authenticity and record the sale and limited edition details as proof of your original purchase. Roger continues: “Please visit us to appreciate these stunning sculptures for yourself. Come along to our show on Saturday 30th September, to meet Tim Cotterill, The Frogman, himself!” Learn more about Tim’s inspiration and have him engrave your favourite frog sculpture, as well as viewing the stunning Frogman Collection, including two beautiful new frogs, released especially for the occasion: Stardust and Sapphire – with rich silver nitrate patinas in turquoise blue, purple and silver, available in limited editions of only 50 and 100 respectively. Located in the pink building on the harbourside, Quay Art is an independent, contemporary fine art gallery offering a wide range of ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, original paintings and limited editions from internationally recognised artists. The gallery has built a sterling reputation for unique, distinctive artwork, with plenty of colour, humour and originality on display. Open seven days a week all year round, expect the unexpected!

W
ith more than 300 of the country’s finest beaches and 250 miles of coastline on our doorstep, it’s no wonder that Cornwall attracts millions of visitors each year. From lifesaving to educating children on the importance of water safety, no one works harder to keep our beaches and coastline safe than the RNLI. So we were excited to hear about Cornwall Gold’s commendable collaboration in supporting this vital work – with its iconic flip-flop. It’s made from Cornish granite, sterling silver and tin, extracted and processed by the Cornwall Gold team in their very own tin streaming works, Tolgus Tin Mill, located on their site between Redruth and Portreath. Steve Ackland, from Cornwall Gold, explains, “Tolgus Mill is the last original tin mill left in existence and our regeneration project is all about preserving our unique Cornish heritage for future generations. Tolgus Mill was established in 1865 and in those days very little thought was given to the environmental impact the mining industry had on our landscape and coastline.” For every flip-flop sold this year, Cornwall Gold is donating directly to the RNLI, providing a source of much needed funds.
“Things don’t get much more Cornish than our flip-flop”, continues Steve, “this is our little way of saying ‘thank you’ for the amazing job the RNLI does by putting something back into the local community.” Flip-flops are available in both left and right foot versions exclusively from Cornwall Gold. Find out more about this exciting renovation project by taking a guided tour through Tolgus Mill. You’ll discover how mining waste is transformed into precious tin and beautiful jewellery by Cornwall’s leading jewellery experts. Tours run daily and cost just £4 per person. After your guided tour, we’d recommend visiting the on-site Cornish Pantry restaurant for a wide range of Cornish favourites, including the award-winning Cornish breakfast, brought to your table on a traditional tinner’s shovel!

HAPPY HOUNDS’ King Charles spaniel Fern, Holly the pointer and Lily the Labrador always know they’re in for a good time at Creusa Kennels.

he trio are regulars at Creusa and have come to look forward to lots of cuddles, play, exercise and pampering, as well as the chance to make new friends, every time their owners go away. With a dedicated team of staff doing everything they can to make sure guests get the most of out of their home-from-home, we thought we’d pop along and visit while Fern and her sisters are staying to see what they and the other guests get up to. We speak with Creusa owner William Bruce, who tells us: “Some clients treat their pet’s stay as an opportunity to socialise their dog. We’re happy to introduce dogs to new friends and, if they get on, they can even go in the run together.” It’s 8am and first on the day’s agenda is playtime. Next is breakfast – and we all know how important that is to a dog’s routine – before a well-earned nap, during which time the staff get to work ensuring each kennel is spic-and-span. “Sometimes,” Kennel Assistant Danni tells us, “we do get distracted and can be found having a cuddle with our lovely guests.” Who can blame them?
Afternoon playtime starts at 2pm and, after that, Fern enjoys a wash and blow dry in Creusa’s own beauty salon. Each dog is treated like a VIP at Creusa and it would be fair to suggest that they’re having a better time than their holidaying owners! 5pm means dinnertime and don’t the dogs know it! Fern scampers over to her bowl, her waggling tail wafting the scent of watermelon shampoo as she passes. Later, after a few hours of relaxing among themselves and letting dinner go down, the dogs go to bed. William hands out treats and spends some quality time with those who are still feeling lonely, while the lucky ones in the executive accommodation have their own TV to watch! We check in on Fern before we leave and, on seeing her fast asleep, cuddled up with her sisters, it’s clear to see that the Creusa team are doing it right, and that Fern is taking her owner’s parting words ‘enjoy your holiday’ quite literally.

Friends join together for an Exhibition at • Porthleven Lifeboat House
Three local artists are sharing an exhibition from Saturday 26th August until Friday 1st September in this popular gallery space in Porthleven. Richard Horner and Linda Matthews are showcasing recent paintings which focus on local seascapes, following a very successful show in St Ives in June. Kevin Harris will exhibit a range of his beautifully crafted woodwork. He specialises in handcrafted bespoke furniture. Linda is well known for her atmospheric paintings based on the coastline around Rinsey and Praa Sands. She tries to depict vast dramatic skies, rough seas and washed sand, and often uses mixed media to create surface texture. Richard’s work ranges from detailed and meticulous watercolours to larger oil paintings.

d n u o r g r e d un We discover a historical day out with a difference at Poldark Mine.
L
ocated near Helston on the Lizard Peninsula and steeped in Cornish history, Poldark is the only complete tin mine in Cornwall that’s open for underground, guided tours and is a fitting testament to Cornwall’s rich tin mining legacy. It its heyday Cornwall was home to some 2,000 tin mines before foreign competition caused tin prices to plummet and mines to close with the last one, South Crofty, having it pumps finally turned off in 1998. Poldark Mine offers visitors a tour, not just through Cornish heritage, but through mining history right back to its origins, before the pen of history was even put to paper. As a visitor here, you can explore the labyrinth of levels, caverns, adits, stopes, tunnels and shafts that make up this 18th Century mine and learn, through exciting and educational guided tours, what it meant to be a miner, at a time when mining was Cornwall’s premier industry. The mine is maintained by pumping a staggering 20 million gallons of water each year to keep both the mine open and visitors safe. It really is the ultimate underground adventure with sensible shoes and warm clothing advisable. If you would rather not venture underground, or are unable to do so, then why not take tea in the tea room overlooking the gardens and ponds or take a stroll around the beautiful open-air museum in its stunning rural setting, where you can brush up on your history whilst making the most of the Cornish summer sun? Or take a look at the historic 1846 beam engine and other ancient machinery in the grounds. Registered for Civil Ceremonies, including weddings, the renewal of vows and naming ceremonies, you can steep your special day in history, either in the pretty gardens, or in the underground Holman Chamber. Parties and receptions are taken care of as well, at any time of year, making Poldark perfect for your private event.
DATES FOR THE DIARY Poldark Mine is open daily until Saturday 28th October.
Tour times:
11.00am, 12.15pm, 1.30pm and 2:45pm (booking essential) Grounds and museum open from 10.30am to 2.45pm (last admission one hour before close)

Perfect if your little ones love Thomas, or your bigger ones have visions of the Hogwarts express; even for mummies, daddies and grandparents who want to enjoy a tour of the countryside with a difference, a visit to Bodmin & Wenford Railway’s charming 1950s Cornish branch line makes for a magical, nostalgic outing for the whole family – a real journey back in time. In addition to the daily timetabled service, there are a whole host of special events booked in the calendar. Taking a trip aboard a steam train in first class makes the perfect alternative setting for a delicious cream tea, just be sure to put the jam on first! Or, if you’d like to experience a dining experience with a twist, or a unique setting in which to celebrate a special occasion, you can enjoy a two-course lunch or a three-course evening meal, all served in first class aboard the Cornish Belle! Perhaps Christmas lunch aboard the Cornish Belle would be a good way to see in the big day with friends, family and colleagues? Again, there’s a selection of dates to choose from throughout the festive period, but be quick – they always sell out fast!

HOLIDAYS
Here’s our guide, with a little help from Reeds Pharmacy, on what to take in your holiday survival first aid kit.
ABOVE é Make sure you are well prepared for all eventualities on holiday so you can spend more time enjoying yourselves INSET è RIGHTî Reeds Pharmacy has been a trusted local pharmacy for over 70 years, perfect for stocking up on those holiday essentials
I
n a world dominated by the constant emergence of new enterprises, it’s rare to see a local, family-run business celebrating long-term success, and to find one where business has been booming for more than 70 years – longer than the NHS – is no mean feat! Reeds Pharmacy in Truro has the winning formula when it comes to longevity, with a kindly and knowledgeable team that’s always on hand to help and always looking to develop, keeping the best of the old and ever welcoming the new, best ways to help you. With summer holidays firmly at the forefront of our minds, we thought it would be a good idea to get the Reeds insight into what we need to take with us, specifically, in our first aid kits. There are few things worse than having your holiday spoiled by illness, so what can you take that may help you get back on your feet to enjoy those precious few days away? Firstly, prevention is better than cure (not to sound too much like your GP!), so take a good sunscreen, one that protects against both the ageing and burning effects of the sun) and don’t forget your lips and ears when applying it! Be sure to also pack painkillers, dehydration sachets to use with bottled water, antihistamines for those dreaded mosquito bites and loperamide to deal with diarrhoea.
Sticking plasters are also a must for sealing cuts and, if you’re planning on doing a great deal of walking, or wearing new shoes that you haven’t yet worn in, throw in some blister plasters, for good measure. One final tip, if you wouldn’t normally drink the local tap water, don’t accept drinks with ice in them. So, happy holidays! For further advice on what to pack for your well-deserved summer break, be sure to pop into Reeds Pharmacy.

SERVICE WITH a smile Anthony Bonner, owner of Cornwall Denture Clinic, explains what it means to work as a top Clinical Dental Technician.
INSET ì Clinical Dental Technician, Anthony Bonner and the team
A
nthony has been providing high-
quality dentures for more than 30 years. In addition to running his own clinic, he also works in The Bay dental practice in Penzance, which allows him the unique opportunity to stay ahead of the game, providing a full range of services. He tells us: “I’ve always strived to stay at the forefront of my profession by constantly looking for new methods and approaches, as well as developing my own techniques.” This enthusiasm to constantly better his work hasn’t gone unrecognised. In fact, Anthony was recently asked by a leading dental company to help with the development of new products and to train other dental professionals in their use. We learn that he regularly works with industry leading professionals, which goes a long way towards the quality of his service, particularly with more complex dentures. He explains: “Partial and implant retained dentures are an increasing part of my work.
For these techniques to be a success, I need to be working closely with top dentists.” So what can Anthony offer you? Your first visit to the Cornwall Denture Clinic begins with a discussion of your individual requirements. Anthony likes to get to know you so that he can tailor his service and products to your exact needs – there are several types of denture available and the key to success is finding exactly the right one for you. Fit, function and comfort are all important, but Anthony’s passion is to make dentures look like real teeth, preferring to work with photos of your original teeth in order to help bring back your natural smile back.

ADVICE |
IN SAFE HANDS Finding support when you need it most.
W
hile they can be great fun for some, the summer holidays can be a difficult time for other families, with family lawyers reporting a noticeable increase in divorces in the period after the holidays. Unfortunately, divorce is simply one of those things in life that, from time to time, happens, and it’s important to be pragmatic and seek the right, timely advice. Jo Stone, a partner in the family law team at Stephens Scown LLP in Truro, says: “The holidays offer time and space for reflection, and for some couples that means a realisation that they have come to the end of their relationship.” Jo sees first hand how difficult it is, adding: “Many people who come to me think they are alone – but that’s just not true. It is right to feel emotional – be that hurt, anger, sadness or even grief for the end of a relationship; it would be odd not to. It’s my job to help by being an emotional filter, so that together we can look at the bigger picture and tackle any decisions that need to be made to try and put life back together again.” Of course, everyone’s circumstances are different, but Jo tells us he often encounters a common misunderstanding. “The irony is that although most breakups are caused by the behaviour of one
or, in some cases, both partners, it is the one factor that usually has no impact on the practicalities of divorce and the financial outcome. That is something that can sometimes be hard to understand, particularly if you feel that you’ve been ‘wronged’ by your partner.” Taking advice early is crucial. “As hard as it may be, the best thing you can do when you’re contemplating divorce is to take legal advice early, so that you understand your options. Divorces don’t need to be confrontational – a good family lawyer should be a member of Resolution – the national body of family lawyers committed to amicable divorce – and focussed on resolving issues in a constructive way, particularly if there are children involved. They should be able to tell you at the very first meeting what the financial future might look like.” So, while we hope it isn’t something you need to think about, it’s good to know the right advice is out there to help you focus on what really matters.

At the heart
OF THE ISSUE Robin Van Lingen, Consultant Cardiologist at Duchy Hospital, reveals the myths and facts about heart disease.
DID YOU KNOW? Despite the significant problems caused by heart disease, treatments for all aspects of it continue to develop rapidly and death rates from cardio-vascular disease have dropped by three quarters since the 1960s. If you’re worried about your heart, the sooner you seek professional advice, the more likely it is to be treatable. Duchy Hospital can usually offer an appointment with a consultant cardiologist within 72 hours.
I’m too young to develop heart disease “Sadly, lots still die prematurely from heart disease,” explains Robin. “Coronary heart disease is the single most common cause of death in people aged under 65, and that’s before we account for various rhythm problems, heart muscle issues and inherited conditions that can affect younger people.” What can I do to lower my chances of getting heart disease? Lifestyle modification and treatment of risk factors are important. “One in six adults smoke, for instance, and 27% are obese. Improving your lifestyle with healthy eating, weight loss and exercise will help, and cutting out alcohol and smoking can be very powerful. Timely treatment of things like high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol is also important.” I lead an active and healthy lifestyle – I won’t develop heart disease Despite everything mentioned above, there are still things we don’t understand about heart disease, as Robin explains. “The most important is probably genetics, and if you have a history of problems like coronary artery disease, you can still develop it, even if there are no other risk factors. Valve, muscle and rhythm disorders can also be inherited, and there’s the unfortunate process simply of getting older.”
I have a heart problem – exercise will be ë INSET Dr Robin Van dangerous and may make things worse Lingen, Consultant Generally, exercise is good. Patients who’ve Cardiologist at had a heart attack or failure are now Duchy Hospital routinely offered cardiac rehabilitation. A large body of evidence supports its significant value. “I advise patients to exercise to a point where they can talk in short, full sentences, warning them not to push themselves through symptoms, such as chest pain,” says Robin. “I also advise against exercise where you can’t rest if you have to, such as sea swimming. Stop and rest, let the pain easy or catch your breath, then continue. Walking is perfect.” Can I go on holiday with heart disease? Most can fly and travel, even if they have heart problems. Only the sickest people have cardiac function that’s too poor to travel on long haul flights. “The questions you need to ask yourself are whether you’re adequately insured and whether you trust the health system of the country you’re visiting, in case something goes wrong. The key to health insurance is full disclosure of all your medical conditions and to shop around to get adequate coverage.”

““They look so real and everybody mentions the confidence they have given me... I’m free again.” LYNN
LIFE CHANGING DENTISTRY Stop worrying about your teeth and get on with your life
These days nobody needs to be troubled by their teeth. If you don’t feel confident smiling, if you have trouble chewing your food, or if you’d simply like to look “better”, then advanced dentistry treatments such as dental implants can change your life. Dental implants offer a permanent solution to missing or failing teeth. They can boost self-confidence and help people to smile again.
DENTURE STABILISATION
The highly trained team at Pure Dental Health in Truro has over 35 years combined dental implant experience and have placed over 6,500 dental implants to date. They are also capable of complex bone and gum grafting procedures that other clinics do not offer. Having attended hundreds of courses both in the UK and abroad, patients can receive the latest advancements in Implantology. You can be safe in the knowledge that your treatment is delivered by highly qualified professionals in a relaxing caring environment.
SINGLE OR MULTIPLE MISSING TEETH
FIXED TEETH IN A DAY A revolutionary approach which has radically changed the replacement of lost teeth. In suitable patients we can replace a conventional removable denture, remove failing teeth if required, place new implants and fix a full restoration all in one day. Avoiding the need to live with a temporary denture in between having your existing teeth extracted and the new dental implants placed. You will only require one surgical process instead of multiple ones. The shortened time means that the whole process is more cost effective than alternative methods.
Loose dentures can cause frustration and embarrassment in social situations and make it impossible to eat certain types of food, with detrimental effects to digestion and overall health. Usually with loose dentures people resort to using lots of denture adhesive, which can leave an unpleasant taste in the mouth as well as being cumbersome to clean. Dental implants can help to stabilise your dentures allowing you to eat what you like.
When you have lost a tooth, the equilibrium in your mouth is upset. If it’s a large tooth at the back of your mouth, you will start having to eat on the other side, which puts more pressure on those teeth. Over time this could cause them to break and be lost. If it’s a front tooth, this could have a massive effect on your self-confidence. Dental implants provide comfort, stability and are the closest thing to natural teeth. HOW COULD PURE DENTAL HEALTH HELP YOU? We offer free treatment adviser appointments where a highly qualified member of our team will make recommendations after listening to your personal situation. We also have regular offers on assessments. Why not contact us today on 01872 222404 to see how we can help take away your worry.

| ADVICE
g n i v l o v e n AINVESTMENT STRATEGY In the same way that your lifestyle will change over the years to reflect your differing needs, tastes and wealth so might your attitude to investments. This month, Matt Begley is on hand to help with a strategy for the future.
I
n the early years of your working life you may feel more invincible, and inclined to take greater risks with your investments, perhaps reasoning that you have got time ahead to recover any possible losses. Conversely, as you move closer to retirement, you may have a greater degree of wealth and a desire to protect what you now have, by adopting a more risk-averse strategy. Additionally, your investment strategy will be influenced over the years by various life goals, such as: • Meeting the costs of school fees, university, weddings, a new car and, maybe, the holiday-of-a-lifetime • Undertaking improvements to your current home, moving up the property ladder, or looking to secure an additional one elsewhere in the UK, or overseas • Providing a financial buffer to deliver breathing space should you face illness, unemployment, or unexpected household costs • Ability to offer financial support to help get your children (or grandchildren) onto the property ladder, or to assist your parents with long-term care Your approach Broadly, if you were to consider four key asset classes: equities, property, fixed interest (i.e. government gilts/corporate bonds) and cash – it’s equities that are likely to deliver the greatest level of risk (and potential reward). There’s no rule that says you must have a balanced portfolio that embraces the asset classes mentioned above, or that you need to have it within a spread of UK and overseas sectors – but diversification possibly makes sense. In which case, you may look at the current low return on savings, and feel that
a hoped-for return on a range of equities may be something to also consider. It’s worth taking into account two immediate issues. Firstly, investment returns can change markedly from year to year and secondly, this can be more pronounced when looking at specific sectors. For example, back in early 2016 you may, understandably, have taken a view to avoid ‘Emerging Markets’, as it delivered a 9.4% loss in 2015. Yet, by the end of 2016 it was the top performer, with 31.6% growth! Help is at hand “We can’t guarantee future winners,” explains Matt, “but we do have extensive market knowledge and various tools at our disposal to help make your investments as effective as possible. Of course, everyone will have different objectives, which are partly dictated by life stage, attitude to risk, available funds, tax position, and also if you primarily require income or growth. In order to deliver measured growth it is sensible to ‘diversify’ and spread the investment net and, in general, to play the longer-game, rather than chasing potential short-term fluctuations here and there.”
IN THE KNOW Contact Harris Begley today to talk further about your existing portfolio, or planned investment approach. The value of investments and the income from them can go down as well as up and you may not get back the amount originally invested. Past performance is not a guide to future performance. HM Revenue & Customs practice and the law relating to taxation are complex and subject to individual circumstances and changes which cannot be foreseen.

FARMHOUSE & THREE DETACHED HOLIDAY COTTAGES SITUATED IN 22 ACRES JUST IN FROM THE SEA Pollaughan Farm is unique. Cornwall is well known as a holiday destination but the Roseland Peninsula is a very special part of the county where there is nowhere comparable to Pollaughan, a small residential farm with a homestead and cottages and protected by its own fields and lakes and only a few minutes on foot or by car from the sea. Pollaughan Farm lies about quarter of a mile from the merged villages of Portscatho and Gerrans and here there are a range of facilities for day to day needs including a good local store, two pubs, various shops including restaurant and butchers as well as Parish Church and Chapel. There is a doctor’s surgery with its own dispensary, local squash courts and plenty of other social activities throughout the year.

CHARITY |
READY, SET,
glow!
Get set for Cornwall Hospice Care’s Night of Neon colour run.
T ABOVEì Last year’s Night of Neon colour run was full of action! RIGHTè Kat with her dog, Riva
his wonderful Cornish charity’s nighttime colour run is back on Saturday 14th October. Sponsored by Atkins Ferrie Wealth Management and Flambards Theme Park, this family event is set to bring a glow to Helston! The four kilometre run starts at 7pm, with a new route around the park, as well as paint stations, music, an electric atmosphere and an improved start and finish area. The best part is, children as young as five can take part, so the whole family can get involved! Among those glowing for the adult hospices of Cornwall will be Kat Paddington from Camborne, whose story helps explain how those taking part can make a difference to those with terminal illness. The first time she experienced the care at St Julia’s Hospice, Hayle, was when her mum, Avril died after battling pancreatic cancer. Then, in a terrible twist of fate, she found herself back there when her boyfriend Gavin found himself in need of specialist care towards the end of his life. She tells us: “At St Julia’s it was calm, warm and, really, like a home from home. The staff were absolutely brilliant. All my friends came down, even my dog Riva went in. “Gavin loved it there. All his friends came and at one time, we had 19 people in his room. That’s how great St Julia’s is. He said he felt safe there because there was always someone on hand if he needed them.” Kat, who will be taking part in the run for the second time, says the money raised will make a difference to those families who find themselves supported by Cornwall Hospice Care. “If we hadn’t experienced St Julia’s, I don’t think I’d be smiling now. I was there with mum and Gavin nearly 24 hours a day. I’d cared for mum, but the staff took a massive weight off my shoulders. I felt I could trust them and that was a huge step. Hospices are bright, cheery places. There’s nothing scary about them whatsoever and it’s not all about death. You have good times in there, you think you shouldn’t and that it’s all doom and gloom, but we had some really good times. In fact, if anything, we just made more memories, and to me that’s precious.”
DISCOVER MORE To register for the Night of Neon colour fun run, visit the Cornwall Hospice Care website. It’s £20 per adult and £15 per child. You can also buy special glow items when you register!
