Deerpark Forest It’s a well-known fact that children love tree houses. But the magic doesn’t have to be limited to the little ones. Book the entire family into one of the luxury Golden Oak Treehouses in Deerpark Forest near Liskeard, and enjoy the ultimate tree-top dwelling experience. But this is like no tree house you’ve ever seen before – you certainly won’t be roughing it. The beautifully realised cabins seem almost palatial, sleeping up to eight across four bedrooms. Stay in the ultimate luxury, enjoying long evenings around the warming log burner, gazing out at the world as nature intended. Set in a beautiful wooded forest of towering pines, the array of wood-clad cabins and tree houses are clustered around the ancient millpond. Relax to the sight of wild roedeer grazing outside your door. At the Deerpark, the lack of Wi-Fi in the cabins is actually sold as a benefit – a surprisingly refreshing in today’s tech-obsessed world (although if you really must check Twitter, you can head to the reception). And you can make your stay even more indulgent with a few extra treats, from
Laurent-Perrier Champagne and luxury chocolates, to Cornish cream teas and barbeque starter packs. The award-winning park not only provides luxury; it’s also noted for achieving ‘the highest standards of sustainability’. If you’re here to relax then the cabin spa treatments are for you. Enjoy facials, massages, and body scrubs. But if you’re feeling active, enjoy the many trails. You can take your four-legged friend too. Hire bikes or enjoy some target practice with a spot of archery. Children will love the Forest Ranger activities, including Teddy Bears’ Picnic, bush skills and pond and stream dipping. With the botanical walks around the park, they’ll scavenge the foliage and make crafts to take home. And you can experience nighttime walks to view the deer, foxes, bats and owls in their natural habitat.

Cornish Yurts
é ABOVE A luxury Cornish yurt ç LEFT The cabin spa at Deerpark ê MAIN A little bit of magic in your own treehouse.
To the uninitiated, a yurt is a luxury camping pod – a bit like a tent fit for a king or queen. And, at Luxury Cornish Yurts, you can leave your roll matt, blow-up mattress and sleeping bag at home. Each yurt, kitted out with stunning wooden floors, is complete with its own kingsize double bed and a woodburning stove, leaving plenty of room leftover to swing a cat. Inside, lying on the luxurious bed and looking up the domed roof through the skylight, it feels like you’re in a mini and slightly more rustic St Paul’s Cathedral. Outside, you can watch the world from your own private decked area. This is glamping at its best. Yurts make the perfect romantic getaway for couples who like to enjoy a countryside break without the back ache. But they’re also idea for family gatherings and small groups too. Luxury Cornish Yurts has three fantastic
yurts to choose from, each with access to the fantastic barn, with its own individual kitchen and private shower room. Here you can chill out on the comfy leather sofas, while the children enjoy the toys and games on offer. Luxury Cornish Yurts can take bookings of up to 15 people and if you book all three yurts, you’ll have exclusive use of the entire site. Finish the night with a barbeque, sharing stories and songs around the roaring open fire. And then lie back in the indulgent woodfired hot tub, looking out upon the stars in the clear Cornish sky.

St Michael's
B&B
No trip to west Cornwall is complete without a visit to St Michael’s Mount. The tiny tidal island is dominated by the dramatic ancient monastery and castle, home to the St Aubyn family for almost 400 years. Thousands of visitors flock to this treasure every year to enjoy its history and stunning subtropical gardens. If this sounds tempting, a weekend at St Michael’s B&B is a must. The beautiful AA 4-star boutique retreat is literally 300 metres from the island, in the beautiful market town of Marazion. This ancient town is one of the oldest in Cornwall, with a royal charter granted in 1257. It’s a stunning spot, surrounded by the gorgeous beaches of Mounts Bay on the southwest coastal path. Marazion’s RSPB sanctuary hosts an abundance of birds and wildfowl. The B&B, run by Paul and Alison, is a delightful retreat, beautifully decorated throughout in stylish neutral tones. The understated coastal chic lends a calming ambience to the interiors, making it the perfect sanctuary in which to unwind after a day exploring. All the rooms are light and cosy. Every room is complete with Wi-Fi, flat screen
TV, en suite shower, and tea and coffee making facilities. Four of the six rooms offer sea views, some with fantastic vistas of the bay and St Michael’s Mount. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So to set yourself r Image courtesy of: Carla Regle up for another morning exploring the coast, tuck into a hearty traditional Cornish breakfast, including hogs pudding. To experience a local delicacy, opt for the kipper, traditionally smoked in the nearby historic fishing port of Newlyn. Once fuelled up, head down the coast to Penzance, the stunning village of Mousehole and the incredible cliff-top Minack Theatre.

e have a soft spot for Padstow. It’s a place you never tire of visiting with its vibrant mix of shops, restaurants and places to explore nearby. In the winter season, carparking is inexpensive, so you can set off for the Camel Trail for the day and still have a stash of change for a pasty on the quay as a reward. It’s always a great day out. If you would like to turn days into months and years, this substantial five-bedroom house slightly up the hill in a sought-after location would be a wonderful place to call home. It’s a striking semi-detached property with a double garage at the rear. Parking is at a premium in Padstow, especially in the busy summer months, so this is a real asset. The accommodation is arranged over three floors and all the front facing rooms have amazing sea views of the Camel Estuary – these are the views that visitors to Cornwall dream of waking up to, and they could be yours every day. Downstairs, there are two good sized
reception rooms, an office, a utility and a huge kitchen-diner with integrated appliances, a vaulted ceiling, and concertina doors opening to the rear garden. There’s also plenty of storage. Five bedrooms are spread over the first and second floors, with the seafacing master offering a dressing room and shower room. There are three bathrooms, meaning there’s never a queue when you have a houseful of guests keen to get out and explore! Outside, the gardens are tiered in a mix of lawned areas and raised decking from which the estuary views can be enjoyed with a glass of wine. iving the dream in Cornwall doesn't get much better than a cottage with land and outbuildings in the heart of unspoilt countryside within driving distance of the coast. At The Mill you have all of these. The Mill is located in rural spot just over a mile from the village of Lanivet and also a short drive from the village of Nanstallon, Lanhydrock Golf and Country club, Bodmin and Wadebridge. Bodmin has excellent rail links to all parts of the country while Newquay airport is approximately 30 minutes away. The Camel Trail, a popular, almost level cycle route and formerly the railway track, runs for 18 miles between Padstow and Wenford Bridge via Wadebridge and Bodmin. Nearby Wadebridge is a thriving market town which offers a fine selection of shops and amenities including a sports centre, cinema, a primary and secondary school and a selection of supermarkets. The cottage accommodation comprises a living room with a huge old stone fireplace with oak lintel. The ceilings are open beam and there is one step leading up into the dining room area. A
further door leads to the kitchen with its slate floor and range of old bespoke oak cabinets with granite worktops. The first floor has a large bedroom to the front aspect while the smaller second bedroom also has a front aspect view. There is a large family bathroom. The former old mill is a lovely building set on three floors and considered perfect for development into a residential property, subject to planning consent. Then thee's the land: 1.1 acres of lovely gardens and a field, perfect for a pony. There is a large decked pergola to the rear of the cottage with plenty of space for sitting and enjoying something chilled in the evening. Here you'll also find a workshop and a second small block in two sections, of stone and slate construction, likely to have been former pig houses. S
ituated in the peaceful rural hamlet of Tregonetha not far from the beautiful north coast hotspots of Mawgan Porth and Padstow is Court Cottage, a truly stunning property. The term 'cottage' is misleading, for this is much grander in size, with five double bedrooms, making it the perfect home for a family. The cottage has been extended while retaining its character and offers the country lifestyle with land, and far reaching views across the surrounding countryside. Truro is easily accessible, with its good schools, and Wadebridge to the east also offers schools, boutiques and lovely artisan producers. Newquay airport is a short drive away (15 minutes) enabling an easy commute from Cornwall and good international links. Attention to detail is what makes this property unique, and the way the owners have developed it so sympathetically, seamlessly blending old and new to make the most of the light and the views. Downstairs, the fitted kitchen is a real feature. It has a range of floor units painted in cream, topped with grey granite work surfaces and double Belfast sinks which sit beneath two windows looking to the front of the property. The inner hall opens up into a stunning Green Oak conservatory with beams and glazed windows to make the most of the stunning views across the gardens and countryside beyond with two sets of french doors out into the garden.
An impressive Scan wood burning stove sits to one corner, making this a lovely homely living space and adding to the rustic feel. The first floor features a spacious landing with window seat and staircase rising to the second floor bedroom. Tucked away at this end is the impressive master bedroom with a vaulted ceiling and two windows. This room has a feeling of space and is complete with its own dressing area with fitted wardrobe and en-suite shower room. There are two further double bedrooms on this level along with the cottage-style family bathroom in oak flooring. On the second floor is a lovely attic bedroom with fitted desk, shelving and three skylight windows affording beautiful rural views. The cottage sits within approximately three acres of luscious lawned gardens and grounds with an abundance of mature shrubs, trees and bushes as well as a delightful wildlife pond and coppice. There's also planning permission for the creation of a home office space and store, making this an ideal property for working from home and being close to the family.

This former railway station master’s house with historical importance is being regenerated into a mix of two- and threebedroom apartments and duplexes, most offering fantastic water views. These are likely to be popular, so register your interest now, especially if you’re a keen sailor!

Got to do...
STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING
S
tand-up paddleboarding (SUP) originated in Hawaii. It has been growing in popularity in the UK for the last few years, and you can see why: there’s nothing better than gently cruising along the coast or river on a calm day riding your giant surfboard. There are several locations in Cornwall offering tuition and hire, which is a good way to start, but soon you’ll be wanting your own. You can now buy clever inflatable boards which work almost as well as the original solid boards. Rock up at your local beach or river access, whip the board out of its ruck sack and be on the water in a few minutes. Take four strokes on one side, then four strokes on the other side and you set off in a more-or-less straight line. Over time, that line becomes straighter; you become more relaxed about staying on the board and look around, taking in the beauty of your surroundings to the soothing rhythm of the paddle.

SAILING SPLENDOUR
The J Class Falmouth Regatta this month sees majestic yachts from the 1930s race in Cornish waters.

O
ver the years, Falmouth has entertained many of the world’s most interesting and beautiful vessels, from the smallest dinghies to the grandest tall ships. Flowing out into the English Channel and the Atlantic beyond, it’s perfectly positioned to escape the mainland and get out into the endless expanse of deep blue sea. So it’s only fitting that this summer Falmouth plays host to a truly spectacular event, as the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club (RCYC) presents the J Class Regatta from 23rd to 27th June. This looks to be a highlight of the UK’s sailing calendar – and it’s happening right here in Cornwall. Organisers Peter Visick and Robin Taylor from the RCYC say: “To see the return of the J Class is a great honour for the Club. With a history of hosting big boat classes since 1924, we are delighted the magnificent J Class yachts will once again grace the waters of Cornwall.” Simply put, the J Class is something special, holding a central place in the heritage of competitive sailing. Harking back to 1930s ‘golden era’, its story is linked to the America’s Cup, the longest-running competitive sporting event in the world. And for those looking for a fun family day out, these ocean giants are not to be missed. With their beautiful hulls and impressive silhouettes, they are often regarded among the most elegant and majestic sailing yachts ever conceived. They are also some of the most exclusive, with only 10 originally built and even fewer now afloat. So it’s a special treat that at least è RIGHT 'Famous Five' - the first time that five J Class yachts have raced together since the 1930s

three are competing at Falmouth: Lionheart, Ranger and Velsheda. Like they say with buses, you wait around for ages and then three come along at once! This is sailing on a grand scale, with total length above water stretching up to around 125 feet. And with masts reaching into the heavens it’s no wonder the term skyscraper was original coined for big boats like these. But big certainly doesn’t mean clumsy. Everything about the design is beautifully realised, from the attractive, elongated overhangs at the bow and stern to the subtle, graceful curves. Behind the beauty lies solid muscle. This was the Formula One vessel of its day. Although just the thing for cruising in style and comfort, the J Class really comes into its own when racing. When the sails are up, it’s a site to behold, the colossal display of canvas dominating the skyline. Falmouth is the perfect place to enjoy the racing, with plenty of excellent vantage points, from Pendennis Castle to the surrounding beaches and headland. The fleet moors at Pendennis Marina from around 20th June. The Race Village at Event Square holds details of the racing and hosts the prize giving. Across the water, St Mawes and the Roseland Peninsula offer great views to lap up the events. Should you wish to escape the hubbub, The Cove in Maenporth just outside the main centre of Falmouth also offers exceptional views across the water. So why not book a table and wait for the action over a delicious meal or glass of wine? The J Class Association says: “Our key event aims are to enjoy competitive, close racing in the deep waters around Falmouth’s harbour, to be part of the town, and to enable as many people as possible to watch the racing.” So whether you’re a sailing enthusiast or just enjoy being by the water, this promises to be a week to remember.

COCKTAILS
BY THE SEA
We found it near impossible to choose just five spots for our new Top 5 feature on cocktail bars, but after a little sampling we've managed to narrow it down for you!
The Beach Hotel at Bude
This modern boutique hotel has a jewel of a bar, lounge on the funky leather armchairs or sit gazing out over Summerleaze beach on the large terrace. Whether it’s just a Tarquin's and tonic in the sunshine or a Cosmo at sundown, there is a great choice shaken up by their professional mixologists. 01288 389800 www.thebeachatbude.co.uk
The Nare, Roseland Peninsula
Sipping a cocktail on the terrace of this elegant country house hotel, you understand what VIP really means. Ken Cracknell, the head barman for the last 29 years, has mixed Martini’s for generations of guests. Classic and charming, The Nare coins ‘old fashioned’ bar ambiance in the best possible way. 01872 501111 www.narehotel.co.uk
Hotel Tresanton, St.Mawes
This chic hotel, transformed by Olga Polizzi, follows the principle that if you’re going to do something, do it well. They blend and create cocktails with only the finest quality spirits, fresh fruits, herbs and spices. The Eden Project is a prime example, with a Mediterranean feel: vodka, peach liqueur, Chambord and citrus over crushed ice, perfect sipping for an afternoon on the sun-drenched terrace. 01326 270 055 www.tresanton.com
The Cove at Meanporth, Falmouth
Sipping on a cocktail and picking at some fresh seafood tapas with the sun streaming through the glass room, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were on the coast of Oz. The Cove is nestled in a picturesque inlet with striking views across Maenporth Beach and Falmouth Bay. You're a stone’s throw from Falmouth, yet a million miles from the real world. 01326 251136 www.thecovemaenporth.co.uk

The menu is classic Americana (think crab cakes, claws, clam chowder and gumbo) and with its cool, boaty décor and an extensive rum menu, as well as some decent beers on tap, this is a great spot for a Mojito at the bar or a Dark & Stormy with a sea-view. 01736 796353 www.rumandcrabshack.com

The Hidden Hut, Porthcurnick Beach From their small but perfectly formed little beach café, The Hidden Hut, Simon and Jemma lay on fantastic feast nights. A long communal table stretches across the sands and the smells drifting from the asado, giant paella pans or wood-fired ovens fill the air, making everyone giddy with anticipation. They post their feast nights on their website so you can choose whether to go for a taste of the surf or the turf on the menu.

Meat-lovers will adore Beef Asado. A whole Boxeater cut of longhorn beef that grazed on the pastures above Porthcurnick is smoked, then roasted low and slow on the grill and served as flavoursome tender steaks with hand-cut chips, wild garlic and pickled greens. From the sea there are fresh fish grills or fresh local crab caught from the bay by the Portscatho Harbourmaster and his sons. It's served whole with a hammer and pick, lemon and garlic aioli, salad and tasty new potatoes.
This is convivial dining at its finest: delicious food served with style and fun. Just bring your own drinks, cutlery and crockery. If you can’t get a ticket for a feast night, fear not: get down to the beach any day of the week and grab a summer meze platter.

Wild Bake, Wadebridge Wild Bake’s wood fired street food makes a great choice for dinner by the beautiful Camel Estuary. You can’t miss the vintage horse box trailer, perfectly placed at the start of the Camel Trail in Wadebridge. Chef Lewis Cole is a keen forager and likes to incorporate wild foods into his pizzas. Alongside pizzas you’ll find fresh fish and salads for summer and hot stews, tagines and slow roasted meats in the winter. SUMMER
IDEAS Be daring with colour and texture for a new look this season.
A
t this time of year we start to think about planning for guests. If you want to update your property, it doesn’t need to be a huge investment; a few clever ideas can help. I chatted to Sue Clark from the aptly named Inspirational Interiors for some quick and inexpensive ideas to update the living room. Sue explains: “For a quick, low cost, makeover simply changing a few small things can make a huge difference. If you have a plain sofa try draping a patterned throw or blanket over it – even a length of striped fabric will give it a lift. And for a patterned sofa, do the same but with plain fabric. Then pop on a few extra bright cushions in a mix of prints. For an unusual twist try throwing a black cushion into the mix, you'll be amazed how it gives vibrancy to the other colours. Use a luxurious fabric like velvet, chenille or silk for impact.” The floor is often neglected, but a new rug can really liven up a room. “This changes the mood of a room. Sitting your dining or coffee table on a large rug will define the space in open plan rooms and allow you to bring a new look with some great colours and textures.” I ask Sue how to get started if I want to do something more ambitious. “If you are going for a completely new look, try creating your own mood board first. This is not only fun, it will give you focus.” Sue advises spending a little time pulling together things you love: fabric swatches, paint colours, carpet & flooring samples, images of rooms that inspire you from magazines, and photographs. Find spaces you could really see yourself living in, then get the professionals in. “With your mood board to guide them, they can focus on exactly what it is you want to achieve saving time and cost.” So now I really have no excuse!

Morwenstow Apartments, St Ives It’s hard not to fall for St Ives. The bay proves a magnetic draw for artists and visitors clambering to enjoy the beaches, cobbled streets and independent shops. Morwenstow is a recently-built block of luxury apartments in the Porthminster area looking across the beautiful bay, a short walk from the main centre. These apartments have been finished to an extremely high standard. The simple, neutral tones are perfectly offset by the azure blue sea lapping against the white sand on the beach below, gracefully framed by the private balcony. It’s all in the detail, and every possible technological comfort has been considered. Lift access, wifi throughout, a
Bose iPod dock, and high-end appliances make your stay as lavish and easy as possible. You certainly won’t get cold feet – the underfloor heating will see to that! While all eight available apartments are stunning, the penthouse suite is truly magnificent, boasting a glass balustrade that spans the apartment. There’s excitement all around, with watersports aplenty and even more golden sand of Carbis Bay beach nearby. But you could just as easily sit on the balcony and marvel at the ever-changing spectrum of colours of the bay as the sun slowly melts into the sea. 01736 754242 www.aspects-holidays.co.uk

GOURMET LOSTWITHIEL Lostwithiel is not only an historic spot. It also boasts great food, lovely views, wonderul walks and Maisie's cakes.
L
ostwithiel was once the capital of Cornwall. Its castle ruins sit prominently on the hills above the town which now buzzes with a vibrant collection of cafes and delis. It’s also home to Best Western Restormel Lodge Hotel, a lovely hotel with 36 rooms perfect for the intrepid traveller, one which also houses a restaurant featuring fine food. This hotel is perfectly located for exploring: it’s only 5 miles from the world famous Eden Project, 12 miles from The Lost Gardens of Heligan, and Fowey is nearby. (In fact, when the tides are high enough, the Fowey locals take their small boats up river for an evening at Lostwithiel or the nearby village of Lerryn on the other branch of the Fowey river.) You’re within a short drive of the fishing town of Looe too, and also around 45 minutes from north coast gems including Padstow and Rock. On the subject of local seafood, the hotel has its own seasonal menu featuring fine Cornish ingredients in The Conservatory Restaurant while and the hotel’s Lounge Bar features local ales and a well-stocked wine cellar.
The menu is deliberately simple to enable a focus on flavours and textures. Start with sautéed scallops, cauliflower puree and crisp pancetta and follow this with a main of sticky belly pork, chive mash, braised red cabbage, mange tout and cider jus. There’s also a chargrill for those who love a classic steak. The desserts are homemade and cater for every palette. If you’re a fan of torte, the Conservatory’s menu features a lovely chocolate torte with praline ice cream and nut brittle. But the next item on the menu is lemon tart, making it a very difficult choice. The hotel has its own talented pastry chef, Maisie, who creates its cakes and desserts (see box). After dinner, take a wander down to the river and soak up the ambience of this beautiful ancient town.

here do people who live in Cornwall go for a short break? Simple: a stunning hotel and spa with a different view from their own. Recently I escaped to St Michael’s Hotel & Spa in Falmouth, just a step away from the sandy expanse of Gyllyngvase Beach (known locally as Gylly beach). I was looking forward to stepping off the magazine deadlines merry-go-round for a while for a bit of luxury, relaxation, great food and pampering. The hotel is a real haven, with a chic, modern, beach feel; all cool whites and blues with huge windows looking out over the gardens across Falmouth Bay. After checking in with a very welcoming
receptionist, and exploring my room – huge, comfy bed, large en-suite and gorgeous view of the sea – I set off around the gardens. With statuesque eucalyptus trees waving elegantly in the breeze, and an abundance of large pines, conifers, palm trees and exotic plants, the gardens add to the feeling of peace and seclusion that is the St Michael’s hallmark. Having chosen a cocktail with some great advice, I headed out to the sunny terrace, gazing out to the sparkling sea. And so to dinner (see my choices in the box, left). The dining room has just the right mix of informal and elegant dining. With lots of mouth-watering dishes on the menu, I took some advice on what to eat and which wine to try; the hotel prides itself on promoting some lesser known wines and grape varieties. Later, I retired to bed, completely unwound and ready for a good nights sleep. After a tasty breakfast, it was off to the award-winning spa. This is a calm space with large pool, jacuzzi, sauna, treatment rooms and loungers on the terrace for some serious lazing. I wasn’t sure I could unwind much more, but the ESPA facial with head, shoulder and neck massage with wonderful smelling oils was sheer bliss (thank you Ali). I spent the rest of the day moving from lounger to pool and back again!

he Llawnroc Hotel (for the astute among you, this is ‘Cornwall’ backwards) has carved a niche for itself since it opened in 2011. Everything about the hotel says luxury. It’s small enough to retain a boutique feel but large enough to operate as a destination in its own right. that there are plans afoot for a brand new spa at the hotel by the end of 2015. New manager Stephen Marsh has over 20 years’ experience in the hotel and catering sector. His previous appointments include The Idle Rocks in St Mawes and The Wellington Hotel in Boscastle. Stephen has held the accolade of two AA Rosettes for over a decade in his previous guise as chef, so it’s safe to say you’re in good hands. He’s excited about this new role. “I am really looking forward to taking this superb hotel forward,” says Stephen. “With so much to offer and previous successes to build on, this is a great opportunity to take an established luxury brand to new heights.” New chef Max Savage also has a fine pedigree. His CV includes the Watering Hole in Perranporth, the Nare in Veryan and most recently, the Idle Rocks. Max also has out of county experience in London, Windsor and Oxfordshire, including work in Michelinstarred venues. “My aim is to use only the best local produce and combine these ingredients with modern techniques to make the Llawnroc one of the best locations for food within Cornwall,” says Max. So if you’re looking for a destination for a luxury retreat with great food, look no further than the Roseland’s finest.

JEWEL
IN THE
CROWN
As Cornish chef Nik Boyle takes the helm at the award-winning Victoria Inn, he's keen to retain its unique rustic charm.
N
ik Boyle is a busy man. The Porthleven chef, his wife-to-be Laura Dunkley and Monty the cocker spaniel, have recently returned to Nik's Cornish roots to take on the historic 12th Century inn just a hop from St Michaels Mount in the beautiful village of Perranuthnoe. The village was mentioned in the Doomsday census of 1086 as the parish of Uthnoe, and the pub was later noted in documents as a stone masons inn, which would have housed, fed and served the masons who built the village’s striking church in 1160AD, making it reputedly Cornwall’s oldest Inn. The Victoria Inn has widely been regarded as the jewel in the crown of Cornish dining pubs for several years now, winning awards on an annual basis. This is mainly down to the hard work and creative passion of head chef David Waters, who is now working alongside Nik. David has been at the pub for four years and he was instrumental in securing its two AA Rosettes and Michelin Bib Gourmand. “Our vision for the pub is to go softly and sympathetically, slowly updating bits as required,” Nik explains. “It has bags of character and personality with its squeaky floor boards, doors and windows that don’t quite fit in their frames
properly, and lots of quirky nooks and crannies, but that’s what we fell in love with. We’re not planning on turning it into a ‘gastro pub’ anytime soon!” The chefs have very similar ideas when it comes to menu design and cooking styles. Nik admits it was a great bonus to find chef David, who has the same desire for excellence and unerring attention to detail. Both grew up within five miles of the pub and both have a huge passion for local Cornish ingredients. Despite the Victoria’s success, both chefs say they are aiming even higher but without losing the inn’s rustic Cornish charm. The menu at the Victoria changes daily and currently you will find venison from Bodmin, pork belly from Sally Lugg, beef from the moors of Zennor, and day boat fish direct from Porthleven fisherman, 'Budgie'. Coming up soon are afternoon teas and Cornish clotted cream teas from Easter, plus a new outdoor seating area, Nik tells us, hopefully before the summer.

6. On the road turn left and pick up the footpath on your right after the entrance to the Bosahan estate. Follow the path along the edge of the wood, turning left at the end of the third field to walk along the lane towards the buildings. As you reach them, the footpath turns into a field on the right and heads to the far left corner to come out just before it on the road.

hef Ben Tunnicliffe has recently opened a brand new restaurant. Formerly The Beach Restaurant, this is Ben’s take on a familyfriendly, informal beachside eatery for kicking back and relaxing. The inviting wood frame building blends into the sand dune setting like a piece of architectural driftwood. Fall off the beach with kids by your side in the daytime with sand still on your feet, or stay late and watch the sun set over the sands – either way, you’ll be delighted. In the summer months the large terrace is open, commanding spectacular views over the rugged and unspoilt bay. Ben says: “We have created a venue which will appeal to everyone, whether they want to experience Cornish seafood and fine wines or tuck into a flavoursome burger with a nice cold beer. Our restaurant is family-orientated and we welcome any outdoor enthusiasts, even if they are covered in sand! We’re 100% dogfriendly too.” Fresh fish and seafood are showcased, but the menu is universally appealing, with dishes for non–fish eaters, vegetarians and simpler dishes for younger palates to enjoy, served with his usual flair and attention to detail. Sample tempura Cornish seafood,
mussels steamed with smoked bacon and thyme or vanilla and juniper cured salmon, fish soup, rouille and crostini, while a small daily specials board will give the brigade of chefs an opportunity to make the most of Ben’s selection from the fish market at Newlyn or landings in Sennen. A family man himself, Ben ensures his child-friendly classics such as fish and chips, lasagne and mini burgers are all executed with loving care and using the finest local produce. Ben is also owner of Tolcarne Inn, a seafood eatery that makes the most of Newlyn’s fantastic fish market. Ben’s success there and at The Abbey in Penzance, where he received a Michelin Star, is sure to be repeated at Sennen. The ethos is all about enjoying life whatever the weather and making people smile. The location and menu mean they are sure to have no shortage of visitors drifting in all year.

or an idyllic countryside escape, with the golden sands of the north Cornish coast just a 10-minute drive away, look no further than The Olde House. Nestled in green fields surrounding Chapel Amble near Wadebridge, The Olde House offers self-catering holidays that are perfect for family fun. Guests staying in one of the 30 cottages have full access to the farm’s facilities including an indoor swimming pool complex, indoor and outdoor play areas, a Pets Corner, a farm trail and tennis courts. Foodie hotspot Padstow and the fishing village of Port Isaac are both just a stone’s throw away, while Polzeath beach and Watergate Bay are perfect for thrill-seekers looking to make the most of the Atlantic surf. Discover wildlife in the hedgerows and explore miles of Cornish countryside before
indulging in a picnic on the farm trail. Learn about migrating birds from the purpose-built bird hide overlooking the wetlands or enjoy a spot of tennis on the courts. Pygmy goats, lambs, guinea pigs and rabbits are among the residents of Pets Corner. Children love to care for the animals with daily feedings and walking the farmyard animals to the paddock each morning. The indoor swimming pool, complete with sauna and whirlpool, is a haven for guests to shelter from the elements on those occasional days that are a little brisker! The farm’s comfortable cottages are fully equipped, complete with gardens and barbeques. They're ideal spot for al fresco dining as the sun sets. During the winter months, you can experience one of the most special times on the farm. With two lambing seasons in November/December and February/March, the farm becomes home to hundreds of lambs. Witness the lambing and even care for some of the newborns too. With acres of outdoor space, The Olde House is perfect for those who love the fresh air and enjoy making the most of what the Cornish countryside has to offer.

ICE DELIGHTS
Matt Burrell learnt to make gelato in Italy. We find out more about these frozen delights.
I
ce cream by the beach is one of the many little luxuries we get to enjoy in Cornwall and luckily for us, we’re spoilt for choice at Pavilion Ice. This traditional ice cream parlour in the heart of Perranporth produces over 25 varieties of luxury Cornish gelato and sorbets daily. Pavilion owner and executive chef Matt Burrell opened Pavilion Ice just three years ago, following eight years travelling around Thailand and working in Sydney. Both Matt’s parents and grandparents had previously run businesses on Beach Road, ranging from holiday lets to a surf shop and a café. So when the two shop units they once owned became available, it was a clear sign to come home and try something new. Matt says: “I spent most of my childhood in this part of town. It’s like a second home to me. My parents encouraged me to return to my roots, bringing my travelling, work and culinary experience with me.” The original ice cream shop, now home to Pavilion Ice Luxury Hand Made Ice Cream Parlour, has been an ice cream shop making ice cream on the premises since the 1950s. Matt recalls: “I think it was the first ever shop in Perranporth to sell Cornish ice cream made on the same premises. My dad told me of a very clear memory of having

an ice cream made there. It was the best he’d ever tasted… I wanted to follow in their footsteps and bring a traditional ice cream parlour back to Perranporth.” Before opening Matt honed his skills at the home of ice cream, the University of Gelato in Bologna, using traditional Italian methods. Armed with an original recipe from the 1950s for inspiration, Matt looked at incorporating traditional Cornish ingredients into the classics. Rodda’s supplies the clotted cream for his bestselling clotted cream vanilla flavour
and the honey used to make honeycomb comes from the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Matt Says: “I always try to make traditional favourites. I’m around food and drink all the time so I like to be inspired with ideas and food trends. Salted caramel has been a popular flavour over the last couple of years and so we adapted our own version.” Matt also likes to shake up the menu with new ideas and seasonal favourites, including Christmas pudding flavour, and Crème Egg and Mini Egg flavours over
Easter. “One customer suggested a hazelnut and chocolate based ice cream so we gave it a go and it’s still on the menu today.” Not so popular was the chocolate and chilli flavour. But that’s half the fun – getting creative and seeing what works and what doesn’t! One of the best things of being open all year round is getting to know the regulars. “I find now that customers come back regularly to check if I have any new flavours. I like being able to suggest new recipes and encourage them to try something different,” he explains. Pavilion Ice has quickly become an integral part of the Perranporth community after hosting an open day in aid of Little Harbour Children’s Hospice and supporting Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club’s charity fundraiser for Cancer Research. Another key date in the diary is July’s Perranporth Carnival. Last year, Matt’s signature blue candyfloss ice cream (inspired by Disney’s Frozen) proved popular, winning the first prize. Matt is currently working on this year’s entry, but you’ll have to wait and see what delights he has planned. Pavilion Ice is open everyday from 10am. Pop in and try the latest summer flavours, including watermelon and white chocolate sorbet, and toffee popcorn.

THE HOME
OF COASTAL INTERIORS We head out to HomeShed in Falmouth to add a touch of coastal charm to our homes.
T
he real beauty of Cornwall is that you're never far from a stretch of incredible coastline, whether that be the spectacular cliffs and golden sands of the north or the delightful sub-tropical climes and sublime estuaries of the south. And each location offers its own unique charms, from the sailors' choice, St Mawes, to the beauty of Fowey and the coastal couture of Rock. The challenge is how to capture the essence and then interpret it in your own home. Achieving the harmony between coastal chic and Cornish character is the mission of the design team at the HomeShed, a home interiors store just outside Falmouth, which has fast become one of Cornwall’s leading destinations for furniture and furnishings. The impressive new showrooms include an eclectic range of classic to contemporary furniture in coastal design-led styles. A living space can be dramatically transformed simply by selecting a few individual pieces. The HomeShed design team is passionate about sourcing distinctive furniture from around the world to enhance the character of your home. Their magnificent new room sets have been created to inspire, right down to the very last detail. Even the interior walls have been painted with Autentico Vintage Chalk Paint shades carefully selected to complement and enrich the furniture.
Lucie Howard, HomeShed’s Creative Director, explains: “We wanted to create a very different and unique shopping experience... The concept behind each room is that it appeals to individual tastes, so it’s always interesting to see which room set people will prefer.” A key element of the new furniture ranges is that they are entirely bespoke and are available in a choice of over 30 paint colours, finishes and in a range of woods to suit your home interior colour scheme. So you can ensure your choice is truly unique to you. Lucie continues: “I love our library style ladder bookcase which features in the store in a weathered grey oak finish giving it a very dramatic impact. The same piece looks wonderful and completely different painted in an antiqued white, and, of course, in pine it then becomes a less expensive option.” This versatility means that whether you are furnishing and accessorising your own home or a holiday hideaway, HomeShed has a furniture collection to suit the style and budget. And with the in-house design service, help is always on hand to select the ideal furniture, colour scheme, paint, flooring and window dressings for the specific property you are looking to furnish. ê BELOW Everything you could possibly need HomeShed's new to create the dream home, from floor coastal inspired to ceiling, has been considered and is showrooms

So you could find yourself in lovely places like Mousehole, Newlyn, Land's End, Godrevy Lighthouse, The Botallack Tin mines or Porthleven to name a few. “We are very lucky to have so many
fantastic locations on our doorstep,” says Carla. “It is home to many areas of outstanding natural beauty, has a historical importance from the tin mining industry to the fishing industry, and more recently became the storm central of England!” The half-day workshop will focus on one or two locations – it’s up to you. Carla is flexible in her approach and will tailor the session towards your own areas of interest. So if you would prefer to learn editing techniques after the shoot, this will be included. “I always make my workshops about you – there is no set agenda,” explains Carla. “I welcome photographers of all abilities and the first half hour or so of any workshop will be about me working out what level you’re operating at.” Next up is a discussion of composition, light, and exposure. You’ll look at lens choice, how to use filters and cover the basics of using your camera. “We may also do some panoramic shooting, and then practise stitching these together in photoshop later.” Carla includes a breakfast stop in the morning session and an afternoon snack stop too. But you might be too absorbed in your photography to notice the time of day!

A FEAST OF COLOUR Fentongollan Farm's blooms brighten homes nationwide. We find out more.
é ABOVE The scent of flowers travels across the Roseland ê BELOW A family farm for generations
A
side from its fantastic beaches and coastline, Cornwall is famed for farming. Much of Britain’s finest produce is reared and grown here, thanks to the naturally warm, temperate climate. And one of the jewels in Cornwall’s farming crown is Fentongollan, with around 2400 acres of land on and around the Roseland Peninsula. Five generations of the Hosking family have been farming this land on the Fal estuary for over 130 years. Fentongollan supplies 100 million vegetable seedlings to Cornish farmers and growers who in turn supply the big supermarkets and wholesalers. The farm also grows barley for St Austell Brewery. So if you’ve eaten fresh British veg recently, or enjoyed a pint of Tribute, there’s a good chance it started life at Fentongollan! But the farm is just as happy sending you packs of seedlings and bulbs for your own
vegetable patch or flower garden. The Winter Warmers Collection is a range of vegetable seedlings, perfect to harvest in time for hearty winter soups: delicious broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, celery, kale and leeks, all with the added satisfaction that you’ve nurtured them yourself! Beautiful cut flowers are a speciality too. The farm grows 400 different varieties of daffodils, picking around 15 million of them every year. Beautifully scented summer flowers currently in bloom include freesias and Cornish altsroemeria with other seasonal varieties added throughout the year. So why not send a bunch with some Cornish chocolate to that special someone in your life? Fentongollan uses a combination of traditional farming methods and cutting edge technology to yield the best crops with the least effect on the environment. Current custodians, brothers James and Jeremy Hosking, explain the key to success: “For all this time, whatever we’ve been doing here we’ve done with care and love for everything we’ve grown, reared and cultivated, always making sure we do nothing in our farming present to harm our farming future.” And as the saying goes, from small seeds great things will grow, so long may this reign of colour continue.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME Padstow’s Jackie Stanley Estate Agents celebrates 21 years of finding beautiful Cornish homes.
A
s the old adage goes, there’s no place like home. And, as we say, there’s no home quite like a Cornish one! So to dedicate your time to finding beautiful homes for people across the Duchy must be a real treat. We catch up with local estate agent Jackie Stanley who has been running her thriving independent business in Padstow and Rock for an impressive 21 years. After school in London, like many others Jackie wanted to see the world, and so set off on her travels, living for a while in both California and Rome. But as tempting as the sunny west coast of America and the beautiful Italian capital might be, the very fact that Jackie has chosen Cornwall as her home speaks wonders. Jackie has now been living and working in north Cornwall for over 30 years. Maybe marrying a Cornishman from Trevone has had something to do with it! But so must her passions for
horses, art and, of course, exploring the stunning coastline. Jackie says: “It’s a privilege to live in such a beautiful environment”. She appreciates that living here has afforded pursuits that simply wouldn’t be possible back in the capital. After successfully working for others in the property business, Jackie took the plunge and branched out alone – a move she doesn’t regret. After opening in Padstow, the Rock office soon followed as Jackie built a solid reputation for a highly professional approach to buying and selling desirable properties. Fast-forward 21 years and the business is going stronger than ever. Jackie says: “We are committed to providing the most professional service and have a great team dedicated to keeping Jackie Stanley Estate Agents a business to be proud of.” So to celebrate this fantastic milestone, Jackie plans to make a donation to local children’s charity, Children’s

Hospice South West (CHSW). The company will donate all of the fees of its twentyfirst house sale in 2015 to CHSW’s Little Harbour hospice in St Austell. Jackie explains: “I was so inspired by the amazing achievements at Little Harbour, and so humbled at the selfless dedication of all the team working together to create this safe haven, with its wonderful, happy, carefree atmosphere; also the courage and joyous response from the families who know their child's life is limited.” For Jackie, family is clearly central to everything she does. Jackie’s three daughters were raised in Cornwall and, despite flying the nest and also travelling as far as Australia, they too have all returned to their beloved county, with eldest Nicky a director of partner business Harbour Holidays. As a mother herself, the work of Little Harbour remains close to Jackie’s heart: “Visiting Little Harbour is a truly heartwarming experience and it is so worthy of our support… our vendors will have
the added benefit of knowing they may be contributing to such an enriching venture as well as selling their home.” CHSW provide care to children with life limiting illnesses and their families. Little Harbour has a ‘home from home’ environment with 24-hour one-to-one care, while offering respite and support to families. To find out more about Little Harbour’s wonderful work visit www.chsw.org.uk. For all of us, living in Cornwall is living the dream – an ethos that Jackie understands all too well. So as Jackie Stanley Estate Agents reaches this anniversary, we say congratulations to all the team and here’s to the next 21 years!

BETTER DAYS
Admiral Nurses are a lifeline for those with dementia and their families in Cornwall. Your donations help those in need.
S
pecialising in dementia care, Cornwall Care’s team of Admiral Nurses provides families and carers with emotional support and the tools and skills they need to understand and take care of a loved one with dementia. Here, nurse Saul Mason talks us through a typical day in the life of an Admiral Nurse:
words by:
Feli x Rowe
A day in the life... "8am: The day begins at our Head Office in Threemilestone, Truro. We fire up the computers and begin the paperwork. On Tuesdays the team meets to discuss new referrals and cases with our support worker, ensuring everyone is informed of developments. 9am: By now we pick up the phone, booking appointments, referring carers and people living with dementia to other services, and generally preparing caseloads for the day ahead. 9am to 10.30am: Time to hit the road. With clients in all four corners of the county, it can take an hour to get to locations. 10:30am until evening: The rest of the day is spent out and about. This is the rewarding part: visiting people and helping to make a difference. Visits vary greatly, from first contact to those who we know very well."
The Admiral Nurses’ work fits into three main areas: helping carers with coping mechanisms, providing advice and tips; improving the quality of life for carers and persons living with dementia; and liaising with other services. The team uses a variety of skills and procedures, including assessments, therapeutic interventions, education, coordination and adjustment, aiming to balance the needs of both the carer and person living with dementia through a person-centred approach. Building good relationships is at the heart of everything they do. It’s important to gain carers’ trust and for them to feel comfortable talking openly about their situation. Saul says: “Our mission is to make every day extraordinary for our residents in our homes and clients in the community. We can’t make a difficult situation easy, but we can make it easier.”
