In our quest to find the most unusual property conversions, we’ve searched far and wide for iconic Cornish buildings, large and small, which have been lovingly brought back to life.
ornwall’s unique charm owes a lot to its beautiful vernacular architecture – engine houses, stone cottages, agricultural buildings, Methodist chapels. Sadly many have since fallen into disrepair, but many are being injected with new life. As Matthew Rowe, of Savills Cornwall, notes: “Inland there are so many hidden gems to discover with fascinating histories.” Lucy, from Boutique Retreats, adds: “A converted property – whether it’s a seventeenth-century barn, a tiny fisherman’s cottage or a lovely old chapel – offers something truly unique. Cornwall has these in spades.” Of course, some rightly question whether iconic historic buildings, held dear to the public, should be converted. But surely it’s a fitting tribute allowing them to stand tall for another 100 years, rather than letting them crumble and be lost forever? And one thing that’s certain is that the new caretakers care passionately about these buildings and their heritage too. Lucy continues: “People tend to take on these kind of properties on a very personal level – they are always a labour of love.” So in this issue, we celebrate the rebirth of some of these fallen giants. And what’s even better, we’ve included some that are currently available as holiday lets too. So why not take the opportunity to experience the magic for yourselves?

Landmarks really don’t get much more iconic (or Cornish) than the engine house. These mighty structures were built to pump water out of the mines, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But when the industry ground to a halt, the engines were mercilessly ripped out for scrap, leaving the roofless shells to the elements. Thankfully, it was a happy ending for Wheal Rose, on the outskirts of Redruth, lovingly brought back to life by current owner, Steve Eagle. “The Engine House was built around the 1850s but apparently never used”, explains Steve. “It was an empty shell”, he says, “but as the granite walls were sound, it made it a question of filling in the holes.” But it wasn’t all that simple – being a heritage site, even colour palettes were carefully scrutinised for authenticity! “Work with the Conservation Officer throughout the project”, says Steve, “and glean as much information from people involved with industrial archaeology.” Steve continues: “We have had a great deal of pleasure from the engine house, our home from home for almost 20 years.” This unique building has recently been listed for sale, through Humberts (www.humberts. com), a bittersweet moment for Steve, as he explains. “We want to spend our free time with our grandchildren, but we’ll still come to Cornwall and when we do, we’ll look at the old mine and think: we built that.”
This building in Mousehole may not have had quite so lofty beginnings – starting life as an unassuming fish cellar – but what it lacks in stature, it certainly makes up for in style. The Old Fish Cellar, the work of interior designer Camilla Banks (www. camillabanksinteriordesign.co.uk) and her cinematographer husband, Chris Yacoubian, is a masterclass in design, utilising a monochrome colour palette, beaten copper sinks, reclaimed materials and bold utilitarian lighting to great effect. “We love a challenge and The Old Fish Cellar certainly was that”, says Camilla, “Disused and unoccupied for 40 years, it was a dark and damp cellar when we bought it, used by fishermen to store their nets. But this is exactly what attracted us to it – it had character! Compact in size, we embraced the New York loft style living, creating an open-plan studio space, just enough for a couple’s retreat. We wanted it to be functional as well as stylish, and its raw industrial style with a nod to the nautical was inspired by the space and its surroundings.” Camilla continues: “I remember holidays as a kid, when we’d rock up at a cottage and the first thing mum would do is clean everything. Gone are those days and our motto is ‘holidays should be nicer than home’!” If you’d like to pay a visit, contact Boutique Retreats (www.boutique-retreats.co.uk).

The Chapel A few miles down from Port Isaac on the north coast is a beautifully renovated Methodist chapel, a building as breathtaking as its location. Built around 1850, the chapel was later converted to a glass store, and then a dwelling, in 1990, before being wonderfully restored by Jeremy Goring. The original conversion was done fairly economically and unsympathetically, so it was largely a case of starting again: stripping it back, opening up the ceiling, exposing the original beams and removing all the fake windows and cladding. “It had almost no light”, explains Jeremy “and a very low, dark wooden ceiling.” The roof was completely removed, rebuilt, then put back using all the original beams and original Delabole slates. “The guys who did the 1990 conversion got one thing right – putting the living space upstairs to maximise on the incredible views – who needs a view while asleep?” And the views really are sensational – lush greenery with the shimmering blue sea beckoning behind, framed by the huge arched windows; the interiors furnished in a cool, understated and contemporary style. The whole place exudes luxury and fine craftsmanship. “We were very lucky to work with a really good architect, James Morford, and extremely good, reliable builders, Barry and Adam Purchase. Each time a difficult challenge presented itself, they came up with a clever solution. Barry copied a missing beam and perfectly matched it to the original 150-year-old ones.” So, what tips does Jeremy offer to anyone embarking on a major renovation project? “Don't do it!” he laughs. “But if you must, make sure you work with someone you trust.” You also have to be realistic about the costs involved. “Think of a budget then triple it. Try
your very best not to cut corners or make false economies. Easier said than done!” Of course, respecting a building’s history is fundamental. “The Chapel is in National Trust land”, explains Jeremy, “we worked closely with them to make sure the new elements were more respectful of the heritage.” Lucy, from Boutique Retreats, adds: “The aim is to celebrate the building’s history and make its soul shine, not erase it – and in our experience our guests are always drawn to places which have character and are a bit unusual.” If you fancy a stay at this little slice of paradise, contact Boutique Retreats (www.boutique-retreats.co.uk).

Fort Picklecombe As Chrissy Phillips of Helpful Holidays explains, “The history of Fort Picklecombe is as curious as its name. Converted into 103 apartments in the 1970s, the fabulous uninterrupted views across Plymouth Sound from this striking building perched on a promontory are a clue to its former life.” “Commissioned in the mid 19th century, Fort Picklecombe was one of ‘Palmerston’s Follies’, a chain of coastal forts to protect Devonport Naval Base from the frightening French.” However, due to international power shifts the French never actually arrived, and the threat that first prompted the building of these wonderful, imposing structures was nullified before many were completed – a costly and embarrassing episode. There was, however, a happy ending for Fort Picklecombe. “Its 40 guns were never fired”, continues Chrissy, “and after falling derelict following World War II, it has now found the perfect, more peaceful role as waterside accommodation for guests and residents.” Helpful Holidays now let five of the apartments at Fort Picklecombe, on the n Fort Picklecombe near Torpoint

A west Cornwall holiday home undergoes a transformation, injected with some coastal inspiration by Camellia Interiors.
“There’s something special about being close to the water… It brings a sense of escape”
D
esign Director Elaine Skinner from Camellia Interiors based in Truro and Newquay has transformed a holiday home in west Cornwall for her clients, creating a lightfilled, fresh interior inspired by the colours of the sea. This is a story of a remarkable transformation; a house that was bland with no clear identity blossoming to become full of personality. There’s something special about being close to the water… wide expanses of sea and sky, living with picture windows and open doors. It all brings a sense of escape. Elaine says: “My clients came to Camellia for help as they needed a design company that could also project manage the complete project with all their trade contacts and partners, whilst they returned to London and continue their working lives. They needed someone they could trust, and make the brief happen for them. My clients had a clear vision, but needed us to interpret it and make it a reality. The challenge was to link the house together through the design flow so that you feel as though you are in Cornwall and not somewhere else.” Elaine describes the thought process
behind the design. “You and your guests want to feel immersed in the Cornish surroundings and be attracted to the property because it’s unique. It’s all about an airy feeling with hints of stronger colours and informal simplicity with its references taken from the outside in. The rugged foreshore below provides a wide palette of colour and texture to bring into the design. These clients have hectic lives and when they come here I want them to stop, relax and unwind. This home in Marazion, with its reverse level layout, has a front row seat looking out to sea and St Michael’s Mount.” The coastal look does not mean theming the place with shells and driftwood, explains Elaine; it’s about replicating the juxtaposition of texture and colour. “I see the Cornish design style as mostly airy with beach tones where large stretches of calmer water suit muted blues, soft greens and subtle turquoises which bring to mind the sparkle of the sun on water and wide, cloudless horizons. Greys work well, reminiscent as they are of windswept water and stormy skies. Other tones like ochre, bronzes and teal compliment these hues.”

If anyone can make your home fabulous and functional, it’s Camellia. Elaine has an exceptional vision and knows which colours would be perfect for your property. Clients know they can trust Elaine and her team, putting confidence in her ability to create the right build and scheme for them, and manage the whole job at any size, whilst they get back to their own busy lives. Elaine remains well-researched, keeping aware of design outside of Cornwall, and holds regular meetings in London with her clients. Camellia is BIID recognised, with thirteen years experience as a practice, offering clients further security of a governing body. Elaine is also a RIBA associate member. The Camellia studio and showroom is on the outskirts of Newquay, easily accessible from the A30. Elaine is opening a second showroom in the centre of Truro featuring a coffee shop, The Eatery, at the beginning of May. It will be an inspiring space – a destination for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the design world; well worth a visit. The Camellia team are now translating their quality residential experience into the high-end hotels and restaurants market, as
they understand exactly what guests of this level would expect. Elaine can transform any project, keeping it individual, timeless while giving the highest return on investment. “Clients come to us specifically because we know and understand these elements”, says Elaine. “We love this high-end, coastal design style, which matches our personal taste.” Have a look for inspiration through Camellia Interiors’ range of projects online. Camellia Interiors are the county’s specialists for coastal interior design. If you’ve just bought a new home, or your house is longing for a fresh new, timeless look, contact Camellia Interiors to book a one-on-one consultation and see how Elaine and her team can transform your home, whether private or holiday rental.

olperro is one of the most picturesque fishing villages on the south coast. The village itself hides inside a narrow harbour entrance protected by hills, where smuggling once prospered. For centuries, the village has been a pilchard fishing and processing port, exporting throughout Europe. The village is largely protected, ensuring that its character is retained. Seaways occupies a truly idyllic setting, nestled in the cliff face with breathtaking views out to sea and over the harbour. The house could be equally at home on the French or Italian Riviera. Seaways was once the home of the Doctor Zhivago actress Rita Tushingham and her husband Terry Bicknell, having spent their honeymoon in Polperro in 1962. The stunning vista can be enjoyed from the principal reception rooms and all three first floor bedrooms. The sitting room is a fantastic space with an inviting wood burner set within a marble fireplace and double-height ceiling looking up at the galleried area, currently used as a gym. The large window is another impressive feature, providing an abundance of natural light. Seaways was lovingly renovated by the current owners, creating a luxury family home. The bespoke walnut kitchen is a chef’s dream with a double AGA, Bosch oven/grill and a colourful glass splash back. This is a superb entertaining space
with double doors leading out to the south facing patio. The master bedroom has a fabulous en suite bathroom with a freestanding bath and French doors leading out to a balcony enjoying the spectacular views. The attic ‘apartment’ on the second floor is a great space for children. There are two main rooms, with further sleeping areas, and a large, luxurious bathroom. There’s a great sense of privacy and tranquillity in the landscaped grounds. The marvellous heated swimming pool and hot tub are sheltered by a curved wall with views over the sea and harbour. Seaways has a double garage and private parking area, with a private pathway leading down to the house. Access to Seaways is a steep, stepped pathway, which may provide a challenge for some. A fantastic investment opportunity as well as a beautiful home, Seaways has been occasionally holiday let by the present owners with weekly rental incomes in excess of £4000.

owey is a charming seaside town with beautiful period houses, excellent restaurants, boutiques and galleries, and a natural harbour providing some of the best sailing waters in the county. Two local yacht clubs organise competitive sailing throughout the summer season. Novelist Daphne Du Maurier immediately fell in love with the town, living for many years at Bodinnick, where she wrote The Loving Spirit, published in 1931. The Fowey Festival, inspired by Du Maurier, is an important event in the calendar. Situated in the heart of the town, Victoria Steps is arranged over three floors, enjoying spectacular views over the river. Granite steps lead to a terrace which continues up to a beautiful reception area where you are immediatly greeted with teasing glimpses of the river. The first floor comprises the living room with an open fire and dining area, both southerly facing with panoramic views of the river, and of classic proportions. The dining area opens out on to a balcony, perfect for al fresco dining or relaxing on sun loungers. There is also a galley kitchen, utility, cloakroom and an en suite bedroom.
A graceful stairway leads up to the second floor where there is a double bedroom and a master bedroom suite including a dressing room/study with doors to a private balcony. With minor modifications this could be a delightful further bedroom if required. The ground floor, currently set out as a guest bedroom and a workroom, could easily be converted subject to all necessary consents and regulation to a seperate selfcontained apartment. Both enjoy wonderful river views and lead out on to a private terrace with steps to the water. There is also a shower room on this floor. Another excellent feature and very rare for any Cornish seaside town is the incredible parking area with space for at least four cars, as well as room for extensive boating equipment which you’ll no doubt find plenty of good use for at this spectacular riverside idyll.

he clarity of light, sandy beaches and turquoise waters of St Ives have attracted artists and holiday makers since the 19th century and with good reason. Centred around a working harbour, the winding cobbled streets, once the homes and inns of sailors and fishermen, are now vibrant with restaurants, pubs and cafés showcasing Cornwall’s fabulous delicacies. Bordered by three beautiful sandy beaches, St Ives Bay caters for any seaside activity, such as sailing, surfing or swimming. The clifftop walks are exhilarating while boutiques and galleries provide a more tranquil afternoon. The town is home to the landmark Tate Gallery, the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Bernard Leach Pottery. This trio of apartments offers many options. At present each floor offers a self-contained unit, all finished to a high standard and enjoying stunning views across St Ives Bay to the iconic Godrevy lighthouse, made famous by Virginia Woolf. The apartments have previously been holiday let but they could alternatively create a wonderful family home for permanent or periodic residence. Pebbles has its own private access and leads through a central corridor to the main living area at the front of the building where the view really grabs your attention. To one
side is a cleverly designed open plan kitchen and sitting area, creating a very social space to unwind in. There are two bedrooms that share a family bathroom, both enjoy the wonderful views. The apartment also benefits from a deck, making evening entertaining simple, and is ideal for barbeques. Blue Water is a beautiful apartment with an outstanding view. The layout is designed for easy living with a great living room area to the front, a kitchen flowing to the sitting room and two attractive bedrooms and a bathroom to the rear. Porthside has the best views from all three apartments due to its elevation it has a layout subtly different from Blue Water and Pebbles. owey lies on a charming and picturesque estuary which joins the sea off south Cornwall between Readymoney Cove and Polruan. The beautiful natural harbour provides deep-water access at all states of the tide and is renowned for its excellent sailing. In the summer months, Fowey is a haven for sailors with two sailing clubs both overlooking the harbour and moored yachts, with both playing host to regular racing. Meanwhile the town itself is one of Cornwall’s most historic and unspoilt seaport towns. Magnificently positioned, Cedar House occupies an unusually large plot above The Esplanade, with commanding, elevated views over the harbour entrance across to Polruan, out to sea and up the river. A modern, contemporary design with accommodation spread over five levels, the house is attractive with a mix of cedar cladding, white render and glass-framed balconies. The large, modern open-plan living space is situated on the lower ground floor and brings together a dining area, a sitting room with multi-fuel Chesney stove, contemporary fitted German kitchen with pearl grey Corian worktops, Neff
integrated appliances and separate pantry and laundry spaces. There are three sets of sliding doors opening out to the gardens. Rising up through the centre of the house, the staircase features ‘floating’ oak treads, with doors off to a cloakroom and gym/office above the main living area. The garage and boot room are beside the entrance hall. A separate sitting room and up to five bedrooms are spread across the upper two floors with several glass-framed timber-decked balconies overlooking the harbour and sea. The gardens are exceptional and have been designed with the input in some areas of Darren Hawkes Landscapes (RHS Chelsea 2015 Gold medal winner). Terraced lawns descend towards the sea with large granite tile patio areas, one being partcovered and having an outside fireplace. At the rear of one of the patios is a ‘hidden’ garden store, while at road level there is private off-street parking for several cars and also an integral garage/boatstore.

Out & About
Making a splash
ë ABOVE Visit the array of furry friends
Discover heart-warming stories at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek.
S
et in 42 acres on the beautiful Helford estuary, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is a must-visit destination that everyone will be talking about for many months to come – heart-warming, educational and exciting in equal measure! The array of furry friends is guaranteed to put a smile on your face, not just seals, but also sea lions, otters, penguins, ponies, goats and sheep. The sanctuary currently holds the UK’s most diverse collection of pinnipeds. This season, the sanctuary has rescued over 60 grey seal pups. A pup may need rescuing for many reasons, from malnourishment after being separated from its mum, to more extensive injuries that require medical attention. One female grey seal pup rescued this season, Kerplunk, had a serious bite wound on her rear left flipper which sadly had to be amputated. But Kerplunk has since learnt how to adapt her swimming style and was released back into the wild successfully in February. The sanctuary is also a permanent home to a community of adult seals, who for various reasons can’t be released back into the wild. A popular resident is Ray, rescued in 2001 at around three weeks old. He was a
malnourished pup showing some abnormal behaviour – chasing people up and down the beach, wanting to play! When he first arrived, it was apparent his behaviour was a bit strange. First he was seen bumping into the side of the pool, suggesting poor eyesight, and he then started shedding his coat leaving him almost completely bald. The team discovered that Ray had suffered minor brain damage and had an under-active thyroid, which meant he will need treatment for the rest of his life. He has become a firm favourite at the sanctuary. Zoe Morris, Animal Care Assistant, says: “Ray is such a character. As well as his rocking horse impression, Ray likes to do pirouettes in the pool, roll around on the poolside and also carry around a buoy under his flipper – as if he has a handbag!” Daily interactive talks and feeding presentations make this a great day out for the family. Check out the sanctuary’s website for fantastic 2016 events.

A burst of colour Visit Fentongollan’s website for beautiful Cornish blooms delivered straight to your doorstop in London.
Fentongollan Flower Farm launched its brand new website last year making it even easier to order beautiful narcissi direct from Cornwall to your door. Daffodil season runs from early January to mid-April here in Cornwall. “The flowers grow in our fields here around the beautiful River Fal estuary in the heart of Cornwall and are picked and packed here on our farm,” says owner James Hosking. “We have a dedicated team of ‘flowers by post’ pickers, whose job during these months is to drive around our fields every day, selecting the most suitable mixture of varieties that are at the perfect stage for picking.” Once picked, they are brought back to the farm, quickly chilled, carefully hand-wrapped, packed and sent out by first class post in the evening. This ensures they are as fresh as they can possibly be when they are delivered to customers all over the UK. “Our daffodils by post business started forty years ago, when my father, who was a renowned daffodil grower, started sending his favourite daffodils to his friends by post. These were so well received that it grew into a ‘daffodils by post’ business long before this became an established way to give flowers,” says James.

If you are travelling with the family, try the Watergate Bay Hotel or the Bedruthen Hotel. Or, if it’s some spa time or adult only peace you’re looking for, the Headland Hotel or The Scarlet might fit the bill. Cornwall has
a great range of accommodation for every budget, see www.cornwall-living.co.uk for more options. What to do Eating and drinking while enjoying the view is always a good place to start on a short trip to Cornwall, especially when you’re looking for a recharge. Take a walk along the beach and fill your lungs with the refreshing sea air and you’ll sleep more soundly than you knew possible. If it’s something more active you’re after, why not try a spot of surfing at one of the many surf schools? Or try the extreme day at the Extreme Academy at Watergate Bay, “The ultimate pick and mix day for lovers of extreme sports”. When to go April, May and June are some of the loveliest months in Cornwall. Spring is generally mild and sunny and the spring colour can be spectacular. And, of course, you’ll be ahead of the summer crowds.

And the work! Mandy meets Tom Kay, founder of the hugely successful Cornish business: Finisterre.

om greets me at the workshop and shop just outside St Agnes. It’s no surprise that it is a bit out in the wilds, with views out over the sea, for the Finisterre brand and indeed, Tom himself, are all about the environment and getting out whatever the weather. The place is quietly bustling; with surfboards against the walls, and pictures and design boards; with several dogs curled up under the desks. The whole place has a warm and collaborative feel; it’s just how a creative workshop should be. Tom has spent much of his life near the sea, in the marshy wilds of north Norfolk: “The sea’s always been part of my life; it’s very much in me and in my blood.” Tom explains with a grin. “I read Biology (Marine focus) at the University of Bristol and then trained as a chartered surveyor in London. But I wanted to return to the sea and Cornwall. We’d always come here for
family holidays and when I was in Bristol I would come down to Cornwall surfing whenever I could. Then thirteen years ago I finally moved to St Agnes and started Finisterre.” The Finisterre brand has grown a huge reputation for the quality and style of its product as well being an ethical and sustainable brand that researches its fabrics and supply chains, only working with suppliers who share the same beliefs. Tom mentions ‘the brand’ a lot; he is evidently passionate about the beliefs that make the Finisterre brand so special. “It would be hard not to be a belief based company living and working in Cornwall. Don’t get me wrong, we are a business with mouths to feed, but strong belief based businesses do stand the test of time as there is purpose to your existence.” It all started in his bedroom in St Agnes developing product that suited the reality

“It would be hard not to be a belief based company living and working in Cornwall" of cold-water surfing. “Traditionally surfing was always bikinis and board shorts, which are fine for a couple of weeks of the year. We came from an understanding of the weather and the commitment needed surfing over here: windy, wet clifftops, waiting for the conditions to change. Building product to suit these conditions - wind and waterproof jackets, insulation layers, Merino base layers and chunky knits; making the product in the right places from the right fabrics. I still see our early product around now. We use recycled materials and a lot of Merino wool. One of our bestselling products is our Merino boxer shorts, once tried you just come back for more, it’s an unbelievable product.” Over the years they have built a loyal following of customers who understand the products and understand the brand they are buying into. Finisterre clothes are built
to last and if they get torn or damaged they offer a full repair service from the workshop in St Agnes. Tom continues, “We’re at the forefront of great adventure clothing and do like to push the boundaries. Really well designed products that become classics is what we’re after – clothes that are loved and worn for years.” They have recently launched their first wetsuit – again Tom wanted to get it right – so they worked with 300 surfers, as testers, who used the wetsuit and gave feedback; Finisterre incorporated these changes into the end product and as Tom tells me “Ultimately these surfers have helped us design a better product.” Tom loves the life that Cornwall offers, he and the team go down to the beach for a surf or swim; they have team days out and can often be found in the stores (London, Falmouth and St Agnes). Of his role in the company Tom says: “I do a bit of everything, from working on new designs, talking to ambassadors, cashflows, and even strimming out the back! Keeping the culture a good mix of passion and drive is crucial.” In his spare time Tom is a helm on the St Agnes lifeboat, loves Chapel Porth for a surf and “going down to West Penwith because it still feels like you’re getting into the wilds of Cornwall.” He is as passionate about the environment as ever and his enthusiasm is contagious. Tom says, “It’s all about the journey, sticking to your beliefs, and you just have to keep going. I have a talented team to work with and an equally fabulous place to live… I consider myself lucky!”

Retro chic Caravans have come a long way since the 1800s. Enjoy beachside luxury at Perran Sands, Perranporth.
“nowadays even the most basic of caravans come with top quality fixtures and fittings as standard”
I
n England the origins of caravans go back to the early 1800s, when they were mostly just functional; shelter used by travelling circus folk and farm workers. In 1947, the first static caravans were introduced – they did have a tendency to warp as they were made from hardboard. Although equipped with gas lighting, coal fire for central heating and a single gas burner for cooking on, there wasn’t a bathroom or any running water. Despite their basic functionality caravans really started taking off in the 1960s and nowadays even the most basic of caravans come with top quality fixtures and fittings as standard. Or you can stay in the height of luxury in the high-end caravans and lodges that are widely available. These spacious spaces have fully-equipped kitchens, contemporary décor, improved insulation, and even running water and a bathroom. Over the years the humble caravan has become a sought after option for a ‘home away from home’ for people looking to buy a holiday home. The beauty of the modern day caravan isn’t just that it’s spacious, stylish, yet comfortable.
Just as important is its location. Perran Sands, in Perranporth, is right on the Cornish coast where you’ll find turquoise sea views galore, surfing and sand dunes. Perfect if you simply want to escape to the coast and keep yourself to yourself. There are great facilities right on your doorstep, if you want them, including swimming pools, adventure golf and other activities and facilities that will keep even the most energetic families entertained. If you love exploring the great outdoors, there are plenty of lovely coastal walks and dogs are more than welcome to stay with their owners at Perran Sands, too. Finding a holiday home right on the beautiful Cornish coast may seem like the impossible dream, but it’s actually easier and more affordable than you might think. Escaping the urban sprawl to the where the air is clean and scenery is breathtaking at Perran Sands costs from £22,995 with site fees from £3,766 per year.

Embrace the sublime
With its emphasis on comfort, design and great food, St Enodoc Hotel in Rock is a classic seaside hotel re-invented and revitalised.
W
e’re talking minimalist glamour, comfortable beds and expansive views of the Camel Estuary. The St Enodoc Hotel has just sixteen double rooms and four suites. Many have sea views and are designed to be both comfortable and practical. Decorated in bright colours with original oil paintings on the walls by celebrated Cornish artists Howard, Jessica Cooper and Terry Frost, the rooms mirror the beauty of the undulating farmland in the surrounding area. From the outset you’re in safe hands. There’s nothing quite like it in Cornwall, and this originality extends into the food. Joining the team at St Enodoc is award-winning chef, James Nathan, 2008 BBC Masterchef winner, upholding the incredible reputation built by Nathan Outlaw. James has worked along side many distinguished chefs, including Rick Stein. No hotel stay is complete without a spa treatment. The Spa at St Enodoc offers the classic day spa experience without the rush. All treatments are organic and most products locally-sourced, as you would expect – it’s not only in food that Cornwall sets its own
agenda. The product range makes the most of skin-friendly local ingredients. To complement this, there’s plenty to explore locally. With surrounding sandy beaches and coastal paths, the hotel provides an ideal base from which to discover Cornwall. Whiz over to Port Isaac where you can sometimes see the crew filming scenes from Doc Martin or the world-famous Fisherman’s Friends singing shanties. Nearby is St Enodoc Golf Course, the beach at Rock, sweeping round historical Brea Hill to Daymer Bay. Or take a trip across to Padstow on the ferry and breathe in the wonderful sea air. It’s this fresh, clean air, combined with the hotel’s extremely comfortable beds (they passed the tough Cornwall Living test) that will ensure you sleep soundly at St Enodoc, drifting off to sleep to the silence of a long Cornish night.

A flying visit Hop on a plane to Cornwall and enjoy the luxury concierge service at a stunning retreat by the sand, courtesy of The Beach House Company.
I
t’s no secret that Cornwall is the UK’s number one holiday destination, winning for a 7th year running in the British Travel Awards back in November. Tens of thousands of people make the pilgrimage down for a week or two, hoping for kind weather, but more people are beginning to recognise Cornwall as a weekend and short break destination. The Beach House Company, a Cornwall based holiday lettings agent specialising in luxury properties that are on or by a beach, recognises this trend, observing that 35% of its out-of-season bookings in 2015 were indeed short breaks. The team attributes this, in part, to the fact that you can leave your desk in London on a Friday evening and be in Cornwall within 50 minutes via the increasingly popular London Gatwick to Newquay flights. From there, utilise The Beach House Company’s inclusive concierge service to arrange a hire car or taxi to a range of beautiful beachside properties, allowing for an easy, laidback few days. This is an increase that Cornish companies like The Beach House Company can hope to see grow in 2016 too, as Flybe announces the introduction of its larger 118 seat Embraer jet to the Gatwick–Newquay route this summer, in addition to two new summer routes from Glasgow and Liverpool. With these flying visits often comes the desire to make the very most of the short time you have in our county, which is where The Beach House Company’s concierge service comes in: you can leave all of the planning to the team of local experts to organise private chef services, restaurant reservations, watersports, horseriding, cookery classes and more. While Cornwall will always see visitors enjoying week-long holidays, the increasingly efficient transport networks are opening Cornwall up as a much more accessible weekend destination too, making a relaxing beachside break away from the city stress an achievable reality.

A slice of paradise Discover Trevalsa Court, a beautiful boutique hotel on the south coast.
W
hether you’re looking for a special romantic break, a base for exploring Cornwall or a family beachside holiday, Trevalsa Court is a stunning boutique hotel in the perfect location in Mevagissey on the south coast. Cornish for house on the cliff, Trevalsa was originally a grand seaside home, secluded within two and a half acres of subtropical gardens. The hotel is understatedly elegant, with period stylings and an eclectic mix of granite windows, oak panelling, rich fabrics and rugs reflecting the colours of Cornwall. Make yourself at home in the comfortable sitting room, curl up with a good book or play games around the roaring fire in colder weather, or enjoy a refreshing drink at the intimate bar. The terrace overlooks the sea for lazy, hot afternoons and balmy evenings. Absolute bliss! After a stroll on the beach, dine in the informal and relaxed restaurant. The abundance of excellent local produce, fish, meat, dairy and vegetables, all sustainable and traceable, is the foundation for the menus. Head Chef Adam Cawood brings years of experience to create interesting, yet simple home-cooked food in this seaside setting. “We use only the freshest, local ingredients usually sourced straight from the sea or nearby farms”, says Adam. And
this has clearly paid off – the restaurant has recently been awarded two AA rosettes for culinary excellence. Having feasted in fine company in a stunning setting, retire to one of the luxurious rooms. There are bedrooms to suit a range of budgets, with most offering stunning sea views; some stylishly simple, others romantically glamorous. Children can be happily accommodated with parents on foldaway beds in some rooms too. Trevalsa Court Hotel is a superb place to stay. Ideally located on Cornwall’s south coast, this country house hotel by the sea gives you access to many fine beaches and visitor attractions. The hotel boasts wonderful views over Mevagissey Bay, situated right on the coast, perched above rocky cliffs and a small sandy beach. In fact, the coast path runs right past the end of the garden. Mevagissey village and harbour are just a short walk down the hill. So you can choose to sit back and enjoy the surroundings, or use the hotel as a base for exploring all that the beautiful south coast has to offer.

ithin the tranquil Constantine bay, Treglos Hotel greets guests with a pristine lawn and a crisp, clean looking exterior. Sophisticated and classy, the AA rated 4-star hotel also sports a full 18-hole golf course; fine dining restaurant and luxurious spa. The beach at Constantine bay is simply breath-taking. Just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel, it’s widely considered one of the best in the UK. The entire area surrounding the Hotel is stunning. The bay is one of Cornwall’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but the geography really speaks for itself and walking the coastal trails is a must. Unwind after a relaxing stroll. When the weather permits, outside is naturally the first choice for eating, although the comfortable lounges and the fresh feeling conservatory are both a delight too. Enjoy a traditional Cornish cream tea or maybe some lighter lunch options, all prepared and served by Treglos’s professional and personable staff. In fact, the dedicated and attentive staff are Treglos’s crowning feature. Taken as a whole, the hotel is spectacular but the warm and inviting staff really help to make it as near to perfect as reality can afford. Guests’ needs
are tended to with the utmost care and the overall service is first class. Treglos’s restaurant, which has been awarded an AA Rosette, is renowned for fantastic fresh food. Taking full advantage of the local produce and availability of great ingredients, the artistic chefs create a menu bursting with flavour and variety. The hotel opts for a ‘smart-casual’ dress code in public areas. So no flip flops or scraggly jeans in the pristine restaurant! The food from the kitchen at Treglos has been consistently well received over the years and did not disappoint when a few members of the Cornwall Living team enjoyed a delightful stay at the hotel. Treglos Hotel mixes traditional English accommodation with incredibly attentive and friendly staff, giving the whole establishment a wondrous atmosphere that will be sorely missed as soon as you walk through the door marked exit. We hope you enjoy this lovely hotel as much as we did!

Rumsdale, Looe
The scenic towns of East and West Looe, where two rivers meet, have served over centuries as centres for the fishing industry and in times past for the transport of tin, copper and granite around the UK and to the continent. Now famed for its natural beauty, fine sandy beach and maze of ancient streets, the area is a magnet for visitors to this beautiful part of Cornwall. Boat trips around the coast and to the stunning Looe Island (home to numerous seals and
coastal birds), are much enjoyed as are the lovely coastal walks and fine National Trust houses and gardens at Lanhydrock, Anthony and Cothele. For the energetic there’s a wide range of watersports, sailing, golf courses, fishing and riding on hand. Enjoying fine views across the East Looe River, Rumsdale Cottage is a comfortable, stylish holiday retreat for two. The lounge-diner is attractively furnished, with French doors leading to the patio area offering lovely views. A few steps lead up to the fitted kitchen. Out & About
p i tr d a o r n e A gre Save money and the planet by holidaying at home this year, with a little help from Tranzwagon.
H
olidaying by campervan is a different way of experiencing the environment. It promotes a healthy respect for nature and desire to preserve the natural habitat that you visit, while still enjoying it. What better place to experience it than our wonderful coastline? So, we catch up with Lisa of Tranzwagon, a Cornish company dedicated to converting campervans, who explains their ethos. “At Tranzwagon we try our best to be a sustainable company, planet friendly and conscious of our impact on the environment”, says Lisa. “So it goes without saying that we encourage our campervan customers to be as green as possible while out and about on their adventures.” Driving is better than flying when it comes to the environment. Did you know that one transatlantic flight is the equivalent of a whole years’ worth of driving when it comes to your carbon footprint? So it makes sense to take the family away in a campervan. Lisa shares Tranzwagon’s top ten tips for staying green while on the road. 1.Pack light. The more weight your campervan has to carry, the more fuel you’ll use and the more carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere. 2.Buy reusable or recycled products. Water bottles, shopping bags, crockery, matches and cutlery. Cuts down on waste and plastic. 3.Leave your campsite looking better than it did when you arrived. Take away all rubbish and pickup rubbish that others
may have left behind. 4.Recycle as you go. Separate recyclables on board and dispose of them properly at campsites. 5.Air-dry washing. Set up a clothesline instead of using the dryers at a campsite. 6.Use cruise control at eco-speed. Driving at 55mph burns less fuel, and so it’s cheaper and safer. 7.Install a solar panel. Solar panels allow you the freedom to go to wild camping spots while still receiving power. 8.Buy local. Where possible, buy from local farms or farmers’ markets to support the local economy and expand your taste buds at the same time. 9.Travel less and stay longer in one place. Get to know one place fully and experience a slower pace. Use bikes and walk everywhere. 10.Offset your travel. The easiest way to stay green is to offset your carbon dioxide used by planting some trees. There are lots of programmes online that will plant the trees for you and offset your travel. For more information on Tranzwagon campervan conversions, campervan solar panel installations or flatpack furniture kits for campervans, contact the team.

A design for life
A chance meeting at the beach was all it took for working mothers Louise and Caroline to start their dream business of a lifetime.
L
ouise, a Cornishwoman born and bred, studied design textiles at Chelsea School of Art and worked in the London fashion industry for 15 years. She moved back to Cornwall to start a family and ended up starting a business too. Caroline is a trained graphic designer. She moved to Cornwall with her husband and kids to escape stressful city life. After their initial meeting, they were brought together by their love of all things interior. The duo have now become a successful design team bringing character and integrity to homes all across Cornwall. Their relaxed yet driven and extremely focused approach is something rather unique – not just appealing but also incredibly infectious. “It’s a perfect union”, says Caroline. “We feed off each other’s different strengths and we have naturally found our balance. We’re not perfect, and like any union we have highs and lows, but it’s always a ride and our passion and drive makes for a dynamic
coupling of our brand: Mint House.” Louise continues: “Mint House Interiors was the perfect name for us; our fresh approach to design and our constant desire to create understated elegance that fits with our surroundings. We like to call it ‘a collective happiness through design’.” Louise and Caroline’s honest approach to create bespoke designs and their thirst to give houses character ensures they will style you a home that feels comfortable and inviting and not like a showroom. Their general style is

“It’s a perfect union”, says Caroline. “We feed off each other’s different strengths and we have naturally found our balance.” not intimidation, instead it elicits a feeling of relaxation, urging you to put your feet up. Mint House endeavours to create happy homes with ‘little pockets of loveliness’. They believe a home should feel collected instead of designed. This means finding a balance between old and new furniture is key. New is nice but fresh, ‘out-the-packet’ interiors can feel soulless and uninviting, the very antithesis of Louise and Caroline’s design credo. The design team practise a fine balance between clean sharp lines mixed in with more natural freeform shapes. Louise comments: “We like a sense of symmetry, a yin and yang if you will. We just like to mix it up a bit. You won’t find any matching curtains and cushions in our projects! We prefer a younger, fresher approach to design.” Louise and Caroline hope to make all their projects smile, whether it’s an old quayside pub in Mevagissey, a newly developed
penthouse apartment in Porthtowan or a total Victorian restoration. They want to make you smile as soon as you walk through your door. They are a small family over at Mint House, using a tight team of trusted tradespeople. Louise and Caroline really care and look after them, who in turn treat your home the same way. They won’t put anything in your home that they wouldn’t love to have in their own. They feel it’s important for them to furnish your home with the best quality your budget allows. Mint House love what they do and that passion is reflected in their tireless dedication to the craft. With clients worldwide, they take on everything from simple refurbishing jobs to total renovations. Being in Cornwall, it means the team are conveniently located for dealing with the hassle of overseeing projects for second home owners and Mint House take pride in smashing forecasted holiday rental incomes. Their knowledge of the luxury holiday rental market allows them to make your property stand out from the usual crowd. Honest and open communication with clients is key to the design process. Whether the team are inspired by relaxed Californian designs, a hip Mediterranean hotel or a minimal Scandinavian loft, they hope to give all their projects a unique character and relaxing Cornish feel.

CATCH of the day Experience the taste of Cornwall, wherever you might be, with Wing of St Mawes, The Cornish Fishmonger.
W
ing of St Mawes, The Cornish Fishmonger, has been sourcing and selling the freshest, highest quality fish from the Cornish quayside for over 35 years, and wherever you are in the UK, you can have it delivered to your door within 24 hours of landing! Expertly and sustainably caught, you’ll be sharing the catch with some of the UK’s top chefs, including Rick Stein and Nathan Outlaw, as well as many other top London restaurants, which Wing of St Mawes has been supplying for years. That doesn’t mean it comes with a hefty price tag though – it’s often cheaper, and certainly a lot fresher, than any supermarket you’d buy your fish from. If you’ve never ordered your seafood online before, it couldn’t be easier. Visiting the award-winning website is much like taking a trip to your local fishmonger, with the added bonus of not having to leave your home. You’ll have over 30 species of fish to choose from, and you can even decide how you want your fish to arrive – ready filleted,
portioned or whole. Whether you’d like to send that certain someone a tasty gift or set up a monthly fish box order, you can do it all at the click of a button. Simply choose when you’d like your fish to arrive, and the team will prepare, label and package your fish, to be couriered to your door on your specified day. And don’t worry if you’re not there to take delivery, the special cold boxes will keep your seafood fresh until you get home from work. The service doesn’t stop there though – there’s an extensive range of delicious recipes for any of level of cook, as well as expert advice on preparing and cooking fish, and a handy seasonality chart showing what fish to eat when – like vegetables, seafood is seasonal! The friendly team will be on hand to help too, so just pick up the phone if you have any questions about fish. So, why not give them a try and enjoy all the benefits of eating the freshest seafood direct from Cornwall?

FOODIE theatre
Dining at Gravy Boesti, Truro’s boutique bistro, is all about big flavours, beautiful presentation and the experience itself.
T
aste and presentation. These are the two main food factors for Scott, Ian and Chris, the attentive and entertaining team at Gravy Boesti. Don’t be fooled by Gravy Boesti’s demure exterior however; within it is a gem of great Cornish cuisine. Nestled into Edward street, near Truro Crown Courts, just a couple minutes walk from the city centre, Gravy Boesti is a theatre as much as an eatery. Step inside and you will discover a chic modern venue with a tranquil secluded courtyard: it’s a gorgeous light airy space for working lunches or catching up with friends. In the evening it transforms into a cosy dining venue with a wonderful intimate atmosphere, a perfect night out. Gravy’s unique open kitchen is the focus of the premises and Head Chef Scott Williams
loves nothing more than to dazzle his patrons with expert and stylish food preparation, TV programmes like Masterchef have brought service to the fore in the collective foodie consciousness, so it’s a real treat to see elegant and delicate dishes being constructed before your very eyes. The restaurant exudes comfort and relaxation. The main dining area is naturally illuminated by central skylight and the interior décor comes together to create a great sense of space, giving the restaurant an open feel. Which is all the more impressive when you take into account the expert chefs preparing their delicious menu a mere couple of feet from the diners. The team at Gravy Boesti love mixing classic and contemporary flavours, with a lot of effort and creativity reflected in the diverse menu. Cornish born and raised Head Chef Scott Williams’ favourite ingredient happens to be chillies, he says: “I love the spice, the heat and the versatility. When used correctly they can enhance both sweet and savoury dishes, and they can be served hot or cold.”

“I love Cornwall,” says Scott, “it’s a real foodie destination. The wealth of amazing ingredients, the freshness of the produce and the natural beauty on the doorstep make it a perfect place to cook.”
Scott has cooked all over the country but, as with everyone, he was drawn back to Cornwall. “I love Cornwall,” says Scott, “it’s a real foodie destination. The wealth of amazing ingredients, the freshness of the produce and the natural beauty on the doorstep make it a perfect place to cook.” During his time at Cribbs in Falmouth, Scott developed a love for spicy, bold flavours. His introduction to Caribbean cuisine has left its mark on his dishes. Chris, however, is more interested in Italian flavours and most importantly, cheese! “My motto is ‘everything tastes better with cheese’. It’s great in cooking, or in a simple picnic of really good bread and fantastic Cornish cheeses.” Fellow chef Ian is exuberant in his approach; there’s a lot of entertainment involved in watching the team function like
Arancini
a well-oiled machine. Featuring fresh local produce, great lunch deals, and an impressive evening menu, it really is well worth making the effort to visit this refreshing establishment. And with the warmer months arriving you can enjoy use of the lovely al fresco courtyard and patio dining area. Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday 12.00 to 2.30 and 5.30 until late. Being a bijou bistro, always popular for its delicious food, it’s always best to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Take a breath and deal with the day-to-day stresses of everyday life, with a little help from Amanda Winwood.
H Image courtesy of: Simon Burt www.simonburtphotography.com
ow do you deal with stress? Juggling family and work among the rush of London life? We all have times when we need to restore some balance and “catch our breath”. My work with Made for Life and Spiezia often takes me away from home. Days can be long, with lots of meetings. Do I love what I do? Absolutely. Can it be challenging at times? Without a doubt. So, I thought I would share a simple method I use – every day and at least eight times a day – it takes just one minute. ONE MINUTE BREATHING Find a quiet spot ideally (although I have used this on the tube in London in rush hour – it still works!). Ground yourself by putting both feet on the ground (hip-width apart) and take a deep breath, through the nostrils preferably. When you breathe in, you should feel your belly gently expand. Exhale through the mouth, feeling your belly slowly contract. Repeat 5-6 times. I usually close my eyes whilst I do this and encourage you to do the same.
When you are done have a gentle stretch or wiggle your fingers and toes. Repeat as often as is necessary. Just take that minute… for you. PUT SPRING INTO YOUR STEP Many people are training for marathons (including our own lovely Juliette, Manager of the Made for Life Foundation). With this in mind, it’s time to think about our feet! How are yours? Local company, Celtic & Co, definitely has your feet in mind with its gorgeous Celt boots and Seasalt offers great shoes too. Giving your feet and toes some TLC is vital.

Your spring treat for feet, homemade scrub Ingredients
1 tablespoon of baking soda 1 tablespoon of brown sugar (Demerara) 1 tablespoon of olive oil A handful of chopped mint (fresh is best) – optional
Method Mix together before taking a bath or shower and pop into a waterproof container. Use to soften feet and this scrub can be used on elbows and knees too. Mint gives a great scent to uplift if used.
Did you know?
Feet have no oil glands so keeping them softened through applying balms and oils is great for their health!
