We feature the reopening of both Porthcurno Telegraph Museum and the refurbished Tate St Ives (with the lovely Mark Osterfield), as well as extended opening of the main House at Trelissick. There’s lots of beautiful glass – how to use it in your home, and our favourite, fused glass artist Jo Downs talks about joining up with commercial interior designers Boex to redesign her galleries (page 32). And there is a lot of beautiful wood – from floors to striking structures – and advice on how to look after it. You can read about staying in a castle, (page 55) and then win it on the competitions page (64) – or win the chance to get close up and personal with the monkeys at the Monkey Sanctuary. Don’t forget to stay in touch an tell us what you like to do in July. Enjoy!

They’ve done it again! Our friends at Helpful Holidays have been awarded joint first place in a recent Which? survey of UK self-catering accommodation, achieving Which? Recommended Provider status for the third year in succession. Lorna Cowan, Editor of Which? Travel, told us, ‘Helpful Holidays has proved to be a continued hit with Which? members for the last three years. Its impressive customer score shows just how well members rate the company and the properties it offers.’ We congratulated a delighted Moray Bowater the General Manager of Helpful Holidays; ‘Most credit must go to my steadfast team, our owners and caretakers whose dependable efforts deliver the promises we make to holidaymakers. Without their thoughtfulness and dedication, it’s unlikely we would achieve any awards and certainly not a recurring Which? Recommended Provider status;’ she explained.
Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach, Watergate Bay 5th & 6th July On 5th and 6th July on Watergate Bay, north Cornwall, the surfers will make way for polo ponies for this year’s Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach, and, as always, it’s free to attend. Now in its eighth year, Polo on the Beach will focus around the polo with three matches. The main polo match is the men’s Watergate Bay Trophy match on Saturday 5th July between Joules and First Great Western, teams made up of some of the country’s finest polo players.
This Award follows hot on the heels of their recent gold award in the Best Medium UK Cottage/Self Catering Booking Company category in the prestigious British Travel Awards, as well as the Sunday Times Travel Editor’s Award. Find out more at www.helpfulholidays.com
Green grants boost for Cornish householders While easy access to grants to make our homes warmer and more eco-friendly has all but dried-up in the past couple of years, the announcement of a new government led incentive scheme to help us improve our home’s energy efficiency will be welcome news to Cornish householders. Starting in June, grants of up to £6,000 will be available to help with up to 75% of the costs of insulating homes with solid walls. There will also be help for householders to get up to £1,000 for installing a range of green home improvements including new energy efficient gas boilers, upgrading glazing and replacing doors. Cornwall’s independent energy experts Community Energy Plus are encouraging householders to act quickly to benefit from the limited funding available and have launched a new service to take the hassle out of accessing the government grants and help Cornish homeowners to enjoy warmer, more energy efficient homes. To find out how you could benefit call free on 0800 954 1956.
Spectators will all be able to see the first ever all ladies polo match, as well as Cornwall taking on the Rest of the World on Sunday afternoon. There will be lots of other exciting events to entertain the crowds including polo demonstrations, a horse stunt show, polo pony relay races, Segway polo, DJ sets and live music, along with a Veuve Clicquot Airstream Champagne bar, The Beach Hut barbecue & bar and a few surprises. Entertainment starts at 1:30pm on both days. Find out more at: www.watergatebay.co.uk/polo @ poloonthebeach #potb14

I would like to say how pleased we were with the team who carried out the installation of an air source heating system at our house recently. Ben and Joe carried out the plumbing work, with Tom, Sam and Aaron doing the electrical installation. The Installation Manager was Des. Thinking Ahead
How to find your architect
David Allcock from Green Air South West takes a moment to tell us why going green is about much more than the financial rewards.
You have a brief for your project and now you need your architect. Note we said your architect not just an architect. Your project will require more than a passing acquaintance. A typical project will last anything from 6 months to a year or more depending on complexity and involvement.
They say that the closer you are to something, the harder it is to see it. Whether or not you see global warming as a problem or even disbelieve that it exists is irrelevant. It is a fact that fossil fuels are finite and will disappear from the earth within only a couple of generations, which is a real problem. In fact, only recently, the results of a study carried out by the ‘Global Sustainability Institute’ at Anglia Ruskin University suggested that UK gas deposits could be exhausted within 3 years and deposits of coal and oil could be used up by 2018 and 2019 respectively. This of course, directly impacts on the cost of generating electricity. We rely on our technology so much that to lose it would send us back to the dark ages. If you stop to think for a moment about life with no electricity, no automotive transport – it is certainly a life that I couldn’t get my head around! Even if you’re not in it for the environmental agenda, the personal gains and reliability of sustainable products are well worth knowing about. For example, with the Kyoto Agreement on Climate Change, governments have been ‘persuaded’ to introduce incentives to ensure that countries reach their targets for reduced CO2 emissions - with severe penalties for those that don’t. These incentives will make it easier and more beneficial for you to cut down on the fossil fuels that you currently use and even opt for generating your own green electricity. Reliability is high, because all products qualifying for government incentives are tested against strict quality, performance and warranty criteria before they are accredited under the Department of Energy and Climate Change’s Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) True to the notion that ‘the early bird catches the worm’, choosing to begin your sustainable living now will have greater rewards than leaving it until later. As more and more people go green, the government will reduce the support given to various sustainable initiatives including the Renewable Heat Incentive (for heating systems) and Feed in Tariffs (for small scale electricity generation). So to really get the most out of living sustainably, be an ‘early adopter’ and enjoy the various perks and savings that renewable products will give you. To find out more about the various incentives and going green visit www.greenairsouthwest.co.uk or call 01208 833120
You will need someone with whom you feel confident with sharing ideas and developing your project. A project is only as good as the team that delivers it, including architect, builder and client. The search begins Word of mouth and recommendations are a great way to find an architect but not everyone has worked with one, so what if you’re in that position, what do you do? You could approach builders and they will give you an honest appraisal of the architects they have worked with. The quickest way is to use the web and see examples of their work. Do they have any feedback or testimonials available to see? Do they offer a free initial consultation? Are you interested in there work? If yes then take them up on the free initial meeting. At the meeting you can find out how they work, what to expect and what service level they provide. You have also had a chance to see if you can work well together and if you have found your architect. Ask any questions you have, as we are here to help you turn your dreams into reality. All the best with your project and next time we will look at sketch schemes! Simon D3 Architects, Design Delight Deliver For more information visit www.d3architects.co.uk or call 01872 260421
Cardiology Facts There are about 2.6 million people in the UK living with Coronary Heart Disease and everyone has a potential risk of heart problems at some stage in their lives. To help minimise the risk of heart disease lifestyle changes such as managing your diet, keeping fit, not smoking and watching your blood pressure can really make a difference. Dr Stephen Evans, Consultant Cardiologist who consults and carries out cardiology procedures at Duchy Hospital, told us that the detection and treatment of heart disease has progressed rapidly in recent years. Improved techniques for detecting problems early allow preventative measures to be employed before surgery or intervention is necessary. “Keyhole” techniques have reduced the need for major heart surgery and are saving lives. Many patients go home on the same day. A thorough evaluation by an experienced Consultant Cardiologist in clean and safe surroundings is what we offer at Duchy Hospital. We operate with a group of Consultant Cardiologists but continuity of care is the foundation of our comprehensive service so that patients see the same Consultant for each visit. Procedures that can be undertaken at Duchy Hospital are: 24hr ECG recording • Coronary angiography • ECG’s • Echocardiography • Exercise stress tests • Pacemaker insertion • Reveal (Loop Recorder Device) insertion • Trans Oesophageal Echocardiography For more information visit www.duchyhospital.co.uk or call 01872 226100

Relaxing & good for you. Most of us when thinking of hot tubs think of fun party pools for music and entertaining or only accessible to the rich and famous making headlines – but they also have great health benefits ABOVE A some examples of the fabulous spas available from Spyrys ABOVE RIGHT Sharon and Brian the owners of Spyrys
W
e went to visit Sharon & Brian at Spyrys Spas and Hot Tubs, who gave us a warm welcome to their showroom in Wadebridge, to find out more. “In recent years hot tubs or spas have become known for their therapeutic benefits and as a means of bringing our busy families together for quality time with no distractions” Sharon explained. They have a large selection of spas to choose from and offer the opportunity for customers to try before they buy with private changing facilities to hand. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to take Sharon up on her offer of a relaxing session in one of their range of spas. “In an age where so many people shop or order online, we think it is important to see, touch and feel a hot tub or spa before purchase, to appreciate the quality and select the most appropriate seating arrangement and therapy provision. Not all spas are built in the same way and at Spyrys, we aim to ensure you are making the right choices to suit your family’s health, lifestyle and budget”. Says owner/ director Sharon, “We pride ourselves on our customer care and after-sales service - we don’t just sell spas, we are here to offer help and advice to our customers if and when required”. Secrets
Under the Sand
Cornwall’s newest major exhibitions open on Saturday 14th June at the awardwinning Telegraph Museum Porthcurno. We went to get an early look.
R
achel Webster, Communications Manager at the Telegraph Museum told us: ‘People enjoying one of Cornwall’s most beautiful beaches could be unaware that it hides a surprising history. High-tech cables buried below Porthcurno’s pale golden sand made this picturesque valley one of the most connected places on the planet, and a cultural melting pot.’ Visitors of all ages can now see, feel, hear, touch and even smell their way through vibrant new exhibitions, exploring the amazing stories of Cornwall’s hidden communications and its exotic global connections. Families have been central to the museum’s development; it’s far more “do touch” than museums of old, and activities like dressing up bring out the inner child in visitors of all ages. Once home to the world’s biggest and busiest telegraph cable station, the museum’s Grade II listed buildings have been transformed; dark areas have been transformed into light, bright exhibition spaces and accessibility improved throughout the buildings. The new cafe feels fresh and modern; white walls and reclaimed wooden floors and just a hint of industrial past. We loved the thoughtful menu which focuses on fresh, seasonal, local food, served simply and a fabulous range of locally baked cakes and goodies – just the right excuse to stop for tea! In the main gallery, modern light installations suspended from the ceiling

illuminate giant Morse code and telegram messages; looking surprisingly like modern text-speak or abbreviated Twitter language. You begin to get the feeling that the telegraph isn’t so distant from the technology that fills our lives today; “We are all more connected to each other than we’ve ever been, and we want to explore the past, present and future of what that means. Communications technology has changed every aspect of the way we live, and the telegraph really was the high-speed broadband of its day. So as we become ever-more globally connected, this history becomes even more relevant to way we live our lives.” Rachel added. The museum is open daily 10:00 – 17:00, with last admission at 16:00. Live demonstrations take place throughout the day, every day. Family-friendly activities including trails and creative ‘make & take’ activities are available daily and change frequently. It really is well worth a visit! Special events including workshops, science busking, talks and guided walks will be listed on the museum’s website: www.telegraphmuseum.org
ABOVE Porthcurno today, and in 1906. Fourteen undersea cables connected Porthcurno to every corner of the world; it was one of the most connected places on the planet and has been called a Victorian Silicon Valley.

It is also very important to Jo to support Cornwall’s wider creative community by hiring and working with other talented, independent firms. In 2013 she teamed up with Penzance based company Bellamy Studio for a complete overhaul of the Jo Downs brand, and this year she has commissioned the services of furniture and commercial interior designers Boex, whose Porthleven based, award winning business has worked for clients including the National Trust, Eden Project, A&P Falmouth and Nike Sports. Founded in 2004 and run by brothers Sam and Will Boex, who were born in Porthleven and are, incidentally and rather interestingly, identical twins, Boex are currently working on concepts and initial designs for Jo’s galleries in St Ives, Padstow, Launceston and Fowey. “Boex are a local, family run firm like

As well as being a busy designer and committed family girl, Jo has a particular passion for the county of Cornwall, its people and its beautiful landscape. Her gorgeous and widely adored fused glass work is inspired by the Cornish coast, she employs a skilled local workforce of more than thirty people and is a regular ambassador for quality Cornish design at

typically enthusiastic reception. Shoaling Fish is her latest range of exclusive fused glass interior pieces, a collection which originated in part from a spectacular private commission Jo created for an architect designed house in Padstow. ‘These are really beautiful pieces’ Jo says, ‘and can be arranged however you like, so they are unique to every single buyer. People have been tremendously attracted by them, perhaps because they are so completely Cornish in their design.’ Throughout the summer holidays customers will be offered a weekly chance to win one of her six piece Mini Shoals when they buy any Jo Downs product, and as usual she will be welcoming visitors to regular open days and workshops at her own Launceston studio. Jo Downs Shoaling Fish have also earned themselves a designated feature wall in each of Boex’s gallery designs, and in early 2015 both companies will be celebrating the culmination of another twelve months creative, Cornwall inspired work.

The Heat is ON
With the price of heating fluctuating month by month, do you actually know the cost of choosing the right heating system. ABOVE Renewable energies are both cost-effective and a benefit to the environment
I
f you are considering a renovation, building a new home or are simply wanting to undertake a move to a more eco-friendly energy source to your home, it’s important to understand the cost. With the numerous changes over the last year, finding someone who can help you through the minefield of different options should be top on your list. With a huge number of installations across the South West, GreenGen UK have vast experience when it comes to making sure that when combining renewable energy technology with more traditional methods of plumbing, heating and electrical work, you’re getting a complete package that’s tailored directly to your actual needs. Using a wealth of industry information, Green Gen Uk Ltd has compiled an example ‘cost of heating comparison guide’ for the main types of heating system. As every heating system is different, it is possible for Green Gen UK to input specific details about your own home or business, and to compare your current usage against a renewable alternative, helping you make a decision on exactly what technology is right for you. GreenGenUK offer a complete design and installation service of renewable energy systems through the south west
using their own in house installation teams and project managers. And being MCS accredited means that all of their systems are eligible for Government Backed incentives such as Feed in Tariff (FiT) and the new Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). While most have now heard of the Feed in tariff, the Domestic RHI is still relatively unheard of by homeowners. The Renewable Heat Incentive, (RHI) is the world’s first financial incentive of its kind, set to revolutionize the way heat is generated and used in buildings, and will support emerging technologies and businesses in the UK, strengthening security of supply by reducing dependence on fossil fuel heating and emissions. So if you are considering making a heating change, make sure you know what the best option is for you, before you commit to an option that may not be the best choice for your needs.

Look after the pennies… …and the pounds will look after themselves. The team at Karrek Chartered Financial Planners have over 90 years combined experience in the financial services industry, providing financial services to thousands of clients all over the country.
K
arrek Chartered Financial Planners are one of Cornwall’s leading providers of financial advice, on pensions, investments, inheritance tax planning, life assurance and mortgages, and has been awarded the prestigious ‘Chartered Financial Planners’ title, by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII). Chartered status is an exclusive title only awarded to firms that meet rigorous criteria relating to professionalism and capability. All Chartered Financial Planners commit to the CII’s Code of Ethics, reinforcing the highest standards of professional practice in their business dealings. Andrew Turner, managing director, who holds the individual Chartered Financial Planner title, explained that securing Chartered Financial Planner’s status is a landmark for his company: “We have always prided ourselves on being thoroughly professional in everything we do, and to receive external recognition in this way is very gratifying. As Chartered Financial Planners, we can signal our commitment to the highest levels of service to our customers.” To date, fewer than 400 firms have achieved Chartered status, indicating that this is a highly exclusive award reserved for some of the leading firms within the financial advice market. When looking at pensions Andrew
advises that once you have decided when you want to retire, you should next look at how you’ll want to live. Andrew advocates the importance of life insurance. “If you die, the last thing you would want would be to leave your family facing financial difficulties, but having a cash sum to pay off the mortgage or provide your family with an income is only half the story. You can also use life insurance for inheritance tax planning and pass on more to your loved ones.” Making a *will is important because you are ensuring that your savings and property (the estate) will benefit those you care most about. Why not discuss the different types of Life Assurance available with Karrek’s advisors who also continue to offer no obligation financial and mortgage review meetings.
Karrek Chartered Financial Planners is a trade name of Karrek Financial Management Limited which is an appointed representative of Openwork Ltd which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
*The will writing service promoted here is not part of the Openwork offering and is offered in Karrek Charted Financial Planners own right. Openwork Limited accept no responsibility for this aspect of this business. Will writing is not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

High-class From solving misty windows to providing a stylish glass balcony for your home, we meet a team of can-do glass and glazing suppliers who always go the extra mile. ABOVE Secondary Glazing with a view
I
f you’ve a project involving glass in mind then Cornwall Glass and Glazing can help. Give them a call and you’ll find a friendly, family team that have been serving the South West with glass and glazing requirements since the company was founded by Dave and Heather Mitchell in 1978. We visited the team at their branch in St Austell and found that family values still run right to the core of this very successful business, which now spans Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire and Bristol with 15 branches, along with a website that distributes nationally.
A family affair
They may now employ over 200 people, but the team is held together by a shared love of what they do. From fresh-faced apprentices to colleagues who are approaching their 70’s but don’t want to leave, there’s a real blend of experience and youth as well as a true sense of camaraderie and dedication in the air. Dave continues to play a fundamental
part in the business and is the company’s Chairman with his sons Mark and Garry alongside him as company Directors. The group is also joined by 4 other directors; Angus Herdman in Sales, Martin Phillips in Finance along with Mark Norcliffe and Paul Garrard who oversee our branches in Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire & Bristol’.
Design meets practicality
Glass is a very versatile product. It can keep the heat in and the noise out; act as a feature in the design of a kitchen or bathroom, or simply blend into the background and open up stunning vistas across the surrounding countryside. For those looking to do something special with glass and create a real designer look, there’s a range of products from internal and external glass balconies and balustrades to coloured splashbacks, leaded lights and bespoke mirrors. Within the team there’s also the expertise to paint, sandblast toughen and heat soak glass. Also acid etching of the patterned glass Opaletch™ which can transform and

add sophistication to any room. Their state of the art manufacturing factories as well as a fleet of specialist vehicles and a team of skilled professionals make processing, delivery and installation all part of the specialist services on offer.
Community spirit
As well as their dedication to their product and to their customers, Cornwall Glass have always been keen to give back to their local community, providing jobs and taking care of the environment, as well as sponsoring several local sports teams in the areas where they trade. Their charitable trust fund, The Cornwall Glass Fund, has been established for four years granting money each year to local charities and community groups. The last wave saw £20,000 donated to help continue crucial local work and projects. The team is also committed to being as environmentally friendly as possible, recycling more than 350 tonnes of waste glass last year.
Family Values
“The company’s roots were very much laid down by Mum and Dad . We are proud of our values and our heritage which is felt throughout the group and I believe is a major factor in our success.” - Mark Mitchell.

Building On Success
Solo Building Supplies offers so much more than the name might suggest, so we paid a visit to their new premises in Hayle to find out more. ABOVE The Solo team from left to right: Ryan Jackson, Andrew Dommett (MD), Barry Warren, Dougal Jenkin, Steve Jenkin and Brad Atherton

n an age where it seems large national companies are attempting to take over the world to the detriment of the high street, local businesses and our customer experience, Solo Building Supplies are very much bucking the trend. They have always had an excellent reputation for their building supplies service and supply many trade customers as well as the general public, across the county and beyond. The key to their success is that they recognise that local companies have to offer that little something extra when it comes to competing with the nationals and Solo are able to do that on price, range, quality, service and delivery times, whether you are a trade client or private customer the same great service applies. With the introduction of new product ranges and a next day delivery service Solo have now It’s not just in the building supplies trade expanded the building Their way. the that Solo are leading supplies side of their newly refurbished kitchen and bathroom business into a fantastic showroom in Penzance is an Aladdin’s cave of shining work surfaces, innovative new 25,000sqft unit in storage solutions, state of the art Hayle. With the light evenings and summer on its way, many of us are turning our thoughts to some late spring decorating and outdoor maintenance. While we were at Solo we got the chance to catch up with Steve Jenkin, in-house construction expert and branch manager at the new Hayle site, and asked him for some trade secrets: 1. Never use silicone based products on walls that need to be painted as the paint will peel off in time 2. Cutting corners by not using moss killer or fungus wash on external walls will result in the wall requiring replastering when the paint flakes off. 3. Always use aluminium primer on treated timber before you paint finish, this process prevents bleed through. 4. All plywoods, including marine ply, require sealing when used in external conditions 5. Did you know that Rockwool is manufactured from volcanic rock, making it the best fire-rated product you can buy.

A
n invigorating walk around some rocky headlands, with secluded coves along the way, and spectacular views across Port Quin Bay to the Mouls. An inspiring route in the springtime, when puffins, gannets and kittiwakes nest noisily on the cliffs and the flowers on the gorse are fresh and bright and birds call from the blossom-clad bushes. From the cliff top car park, near the centre of the village, follow the South West Coast Path westward around to the harbour.
1. From the south side of the harbour in Port Isaac, turn right up Roscarrock Hill and follow the narrow lane past the Wesleyan Chapel to the end of the road. Turn right, towards the cliffs, and go through the kissing gate and up the steps beyond. Follow the South West Coast Path around Lobber Point and with it drop down into Pine Haven. 2. Ignoring the path up the valley to your left, carry along the Coast Path as it climbs the steps ahead of you. The path follows the fence up and down around the ragged coastline for the next mile or two, giving you a wonderful workout with breathtaking views!
3. At Varley Head follow the Coast Path as it continues around Greengarden Cove and then Downgate Cove. 4. Dropping down into Port Quin, turn right on the road to pass the slipway. 5. From the mine shafts follow the Coast Path past Pigeon Cove and up to Trevan Point. 6. At Trevan Point carry on along the Coast Path, ignoring the path heading inland, and drop down to Epphaven Cove, making your way from there around Pennywilgie Point to Lundy Bay. 7. Reaching Lundy Bay, turn off the Coast Path and take the path heading directly uphill on your left, climbing southwards to the top of the hill and then following the path to the road beyond to Port Quin Cross at Porteath, where you can catch the bus back to Port Isaac.
Nearby refreshments
There are a number of restaurants, pubs and tearooms in Port Isaac, as well as the Beehive Tearoom in Porteath.

Caught On Camera
Working from his 1970’s VW Westfalia camper van, Nicholas Woodman developed a product that would make it easy for people to capture insane videos.
I ABOVE 2013 Emmy award winning camera
f, like me, you are something of an adrenaline junkie, then the ability to record your antics and exploits makes them that little bit more exciting! I take a look at the story behind what is claimed to be the world’s most versatile camera - the GoPro. Imagine being on your surfboard and running your hands through the glassywave form of the ultimate barrel. Imagine carving down a mountain leaving fresh tracks on a blue sky, powder day in the mountains. Imagine racing down the ultimate piece of single track. Imagine paddling your canoe along the Cornish coastline as a school of dolphins jump clear of the water just up ahead. Imagine a camera that would enable you to capture all of these events and share them with your friends and family. The development of the Gopro means that this dream has been turned into an affordable reality. The GoPro story is the ultimate in ‘surf cool’. Nicholas Woodman, founder and CEO of GoPro had to move back with his parents in order to save money so that he could develop the camera. From humble beginnings, working from his 1970’s VW Westfalia camper van, he developed a product that would make it
easy for people to capture insane videos and photos of their lives at the most exciting moments. Nicholas originally set out to develop a wrist camera for surfers but soon realised that what was really needed was a camera where people could capture footage of themselves. Basically a mountable camera with a wideangle lense that would let you be the star of your very own imax movie. He eliminated the need for someone else to be shooting the video and in so doing created a community of like-minded individuals who would go on to share their incredible experiences around the world.

Beautifully dressed Windows Wave goodbye to window dressing worries with the ABC of problem solving, Sue from Inspirational Interiors gave us the following advice ABOVE Contemporary blinds from Silent Gliss, blinds like these are able to create privacy, without losing all the natural light
A - Apex Windows
Architects keep doing it - often in bedrooms where privacy is key. The challenge is to find innovative solutions for awkward shaped windows without destroying the integrity of the architectural shape. Shaped shutters and venetian blinds incorporate good design and practical covering Vertical blinds offer practical light control, window film can give a more contemporary look
B - Blind Panic
With summer on the way that longed for sun has got it’s hat on and is causing quite a glare, time to organise those blinds you’ve been putting off, but what to do about the tricky task of covering those tilt & turn windows and sliding panel doors? Perfect Fit Blinds Perfect fit blinds are fitted into the window glazing bars, each blind becomes an integral part of the window making them a perfect option for conservatories,
tilt & turn windows and many other applications. The frames come in a variety of colours matching most window frame colour options. The blinds come in a choice of roller, pleated and venetian blinds and can be fitted so that the blind opens from the bottom up, making them a good choice if pavement privacy is an issue for you. Always go for one blind per glazing panel wherever possible - smaller blinds are easier to operate - will last longer and are more reliable. Covering more than one panel at a time will cost less initially but may not function so well in the long run and prove more costly in the end. Roller Blinds We thought roller blinds were the domain of the kitchen and bathroom. But Sue told us that more recently this sleek and contemporary style has become a firm favourite of interior designers. Available in a vast selection of fabrics, roller blinds provide the answers to a wide variety of needs, a discreet option

for bi-folding or sliding doors, when required they can be put away from view maximising the wonderful views lots of our Cornish contemporary homes offer – roller blinds give privacy and light control and protection from heat and uv rays. Protecting your valuable furnishings.
C - Curtain Confusion?
With so many styles to choose from how to decide which style suits you? Sue explained that the wave curtain system from Silent Gliss has become the number one option for contemporary interiors. With walls of glass often being the top trend for contemporary builds, the neat simple folds of the wave minimises the amount of glass covered when the curtains are drawn back but provide warmth and softness to those often hard interiors. The ‘metropole’ can cover any length and can have bends to go around corners allowing the curtains to stack wherever needed
Contemporary/ Traditional Curtains Bespoke curtains can be just the thing to complete a room design. Our favourite fabrics at the moment are from Harlequin, Scion, Missprint, Clarissa Hulse to name but a few. Exciting new ranges are being produced all the time, from soft and floaty tie-dye sheers in amazing new colours to endless prints and textures ensuring limitless choice.

Capture the Castle When Henry VIII died in 1547 he had spent £376,000 (£1.13 billion in today’s money) on the defence of his realm. Pendennis and St Mawes Castles were part of his masterplan and their purpose was to guard the Cornish coast against the perennial threat of French and Spanish invasion. Today, they are both in the care of English Heritage and provide the setting for great family days out, but why not extend the experience with a stay in one of their attached holiday cottages? Pendennis Castle: Custodians House and Callie’s Cottage On a hill above the beaches and many restaurants, shops and pubs of the historic town of Falmouth sits Pendennis Castle. Based within its ramparts – which saw action during the English Civil War and both World Wars – are Custodians House, a single-storey cottage that sleeps two and overlooks Falmouth Bay, and Callie’s Cottage, a single-storey two-bedroom property with its own garden with commanding views out to sea. During your stay, listen out for the noonday gun firing or watch a medieval joust; when the public have gone for the day, become kings and queens of your castle. There probably isn’t any need to check the coast for invaders, though. St Mawes Castle: Fort House Shaped like a cloverleaf and adorned with friendly gargoyles, 450-year-old St Mawes Castle is more pretty gem than forbidding fortress. And nestled into the hillside just above it, with breath-taking views of the estuary including Anthony Head and Pendennis Point, is Fort House, which sleeps four and, with its fenced garden, is perfect for families. Keen
walkers can join the nearby South West Coast Path, though there is the more leisurely option of strolling down to the picturesque fishing village and sailing nirvana of St Mawes. All three cottages accept dogs, and guests have free entry to English Heritage properties during their stay, as well as reduced entry to events taking place at the sites. You can also enjoy a 10% discount on all purchases in the castle shops. And if you are celebrating a special occasion, flowers, chocolates or champagne can be ordered in advance when you make your booking.

oming out of Lamorna Cove car park, with your back to the sea, turn right before the houses to pick up the South West Coast Path. From here it passes through heathland and in to the low trees and bushes of the Kemyel Crease Nature Reserve. The Coast Path makes its way through the Nature Reserve close to the coast, or take the small path around the upper edge of the Reserve for views out to sea. The two paths join at the top of the Nature Reserve a little further on, to carry on along a lane to Raginnis Hill. 1. Meeting the road to Raginnis, carry on ahead and into Mousehole. At the end of Raginnis Hill, as it reaches Chapel Street, turn right down Portland Place to walk along The Wharf and around the harbour. Turn left on Fore Street and left again on to Mill Pool. 2. Turn right and follow Virgin Place uphill to Cherrygarden Street. Turn right here and follow the narrow winding lane uphill, passing Treen Villas on the right and continuing to climb alongside the mill leat, coming out on Love Lane. 3. On Love Lane walk a few yards to the right to pick up the footpath opposite, following this through four fields to Raginnis. Turn left in front of the buildings
to take the lane ahead to Raginnis Hill. Turning right briefly, go over the stile to the right of Gwillan Drea and follow the footpath to the far right-hand corner, going through to follow the path along the right-hand hedge through several fields to Kemyel Drea. 4. Going through into the farmyard, follow the drive to the left of the buildings to follow the hedge beyond, taking the narrow path to the right of the gate ahead. Bear left beyond to follow the footpath alongside the trees, carrying on ahead through the trees and the field beyond to come out on the road by Kemyel Mill House. Carry on along the road past the buildings, taking the footpath on the right just beyond, bearing right in the field to go through the gate. 5. Carry on through the next two fields, continuing in the same direction on the road ahead, bearing right with it around Burnt Toast Cottage and carrying on the grass lane. When the lane turns left, leave it to carry on through the gate ahead and diagonally across the field to the far lefthand corner. From here a footpath runs through the woods and out onto the road. 6. On the road turn left. At the next junction bear left again, carrying on down the road to return to the car park.

of Cornwall at Nancekuke
Feet up, with a glass of wine in hand you gaze from the picture window of your cottage across one of Cornwall’s most iconic views. South from where you are sitting on the Nancekuke valley side, you look across green fields and Cornish hedges to the twin hills of Carn Brea and Carn Marth and realise that this is proper Cornwall; close enough to the sea to smell the salt air, close to mining country with engine houses dotted through the landscape, and surrounded by the small enclosures of classic Celtic farmland.

he North Coast Holiday Cottages have been constructed to make the most of the magnificent landscape and reflect the style of the original stone cow barn (‘bowgie’ in Cornish) on the site. Inside, each of the cottages has been given its own distinct character within the common theme of modern country style and comfort. Muted fabric tones are matched by wooden beams, flooring and kitchen worksurfaces but a flash of vibrant colour here and there brings the look bang up to date – indigo in one cottage, cerise in another, lime green in yet another. The bathrooms reinforce the luxury feel, tiled to half height and with pristine white sanitaryware and chrome fittings; the bedrooms feel similarly plush with quality linen, bedspreads, throws and cushions. Tying each of the cottages together is photography by renowned Cornishbased artist Clare Mason. Clare’s work focuses on nature and her love of her subject shines through each print. The photographs complement the cottages perfectly and are available to purchase
on site - from postcard size to large framed images - they make a very special keepsake of a very special holiday. While each of the cottages has a fully fitted kitchen and all the equipment to make self-catering a joy, North Coast are working with some superb local caterers to bring great food to the site. The Poco Rosso red delivery van calls daily with a selection of breakfast pastries, tasty sandwich fillings on a variety of breads, soups, salads, quiches and pies, tasty tea time treats and superb coffee. The site also plays host to Kernow Forno with their mobile wood-fired pizza ovens, the only pizza delivery service that guarantees the quality by bringing its own oven.

he fashion for natural wood flooring and pulling up old carpets or vinyl to discover hidden treasure underneath continues at a pace. But how to restore an old or discoloured wooden floor to its former glory – or even better? And how to keep it looking fabulous? We spoke to Andrew Biss from Strippers Flooring a professional wood floor sanding and restoration company based in St Ives, Cornwall. You can walk across their floors at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen at Watergate Bay or the award winning Primrose Valley Hotel in St Ives, and they have restored many beautiful floors in homes across Cornwall. Andrew said: ‘Good advice is key. It is harder to sand and restore a floor that’s been done incorrectly than to get it right first time. Once the floor is finished you don’t want the upheaval of redoing it!’ Andrew told me that many people underestimate the amount of work that goes into a beautiful wooden floor, for example Strippers usually use 5 grades of sanding belts – 6 on hardwood floors - which gives a superior finish – while many general builders will have 3 grades if you’re lucky. He advised to find out how your contractor is going to manage tricky corners, behind the pipes and any damaged or badly stained boards and crucially the products they intend to use. If you’ve already got a fabulous wood floor then according to Andrew the right after care is essential. He said, ‘You
can spend a lot of money on achieving a lovely wood floor and then ruin it with the wrong cleaning routine. Using washing-up liquid, wood soap etc. will leave a sticky residue that just attracts more dirt – so you clean it more often and the residue builds up attracting more dirt. Always use a PH neutral floor cleaner’. Apparently we all use too much water when washing a wood floor – he suggested using one of the squeegee flat faced kind of mops, making a weak solution of PH neutral floor cleaner and water in a mister and misting the bottom of the mop to clean. This routine is for sealed floors. For oiled wood floors it’s important to use the specified cleaner for your floor which will contain a little of the oil, which helps maintain the finish of your floor. ‘Oh and put good quality felt pads on the feet of all the furniture in the room! Andrew added with some passion. He paused then laughed and said: ‘As you can tell I am a complete dinner party bore on wood floors and finishes, but ultimately we simply want you to have a really gorgeous floor.’

For the love of Wood ‘Allow your passion to become your purpose and it will become your profession,’ says the author Gabrielle Bernstein. We talked to Stuart a specialist joiner who, with his love of working with wood, has certainly lived by the principle.
B
orn from a desire to leave the Home Counties behind, Good Life Joinery Ltd came to life in 2001 from a home-based workshop in North Cornwall. Now 13 years later with a dog, some pigs, chickens and three children along the way, the business has a customer base that stretches across the whole of Cornwall and into Devon. From listed buildings bound by regulations, to cottages with awkward spaces and cavernous barn conversions, he meets the challenges of creating bespoke furniture or striking structural pieces, including staircases, by integrating traditional and modern techniques to achieve each customer’s vision. ‘Green oak is my favourite.’ He explains, ‘It is expensive, but reassuringly so. It’s sustainable, strong and functional and can offer a contemporary look combined with traditional craftsmanship. We have a rich oak-building heritage in this country and should do more of it. And whether I’m constructing huge green-oak frames for building structures, blanket boxes or statement kitchens I
won’t compromise on good-quality wood or craftsmanship.’ He added with some passion. ‘There really is no need to use tradesmen from out of county; we have a wealth of highly skilled, highly qualified workmen and women in Cornwall.’ With a focus on realistically priced, bespoke products, no project is too big or small at Good Life; they live and breathe each project until completion (and probably long after!). To meet the deadline for completing the frame of a beautiful pool house, he set up a temporary workshop in a local parish hall to accommodate the immense oak skeleton as it grew, as well as a scaffold tent over the building plot so the weather could not interrupt work. So now we’re wondering if Stuart is a Kafka fan… ‘Follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly.

Mark moved to Cornwall in 2005 to become project director at Cornwall County Council (now Cornwall Council) for the new Tate St Ives extension – in 2006 he joined Tate itself and in 2007 became the Executive Director (there is also an Artistic Director). But there is much more to his story – it was truly fascinating talking to him. Mark told me: ‘The ‘ping’ moment for me was just before my 40th birthday. I was living and working in London and decided to walk the coast path from Padstow to Falmouth on my own. I took 2 weeks off work, packed a rucksack and was off. A hugely reflective time and I fell in love with the coastline between St Ives and Zennor – the moorland and the sea!’ Then within the year, back in London, glancing through the Guardian newspaper – the ad for a Project Manager for Tate St Ives leapt out at him – a rather nerve-racking application and interview
time (he really wanted this job and this move!) – and he found himself living and working in his most cherished bit of Cornwall. Mark adds, ‘Mind you I’ve worked harder in Cornwall than I ever did in London!’ Life started with training as a child at the Royal Ballet in London, then a degree in Literature. ‘People were always important to me,’ Mark explained. ‘I spent time working as a teacher, in mental health; always some kind of community involvement.’ He returned to university in his late 20s to do a degree in Fine Art and then started working for libraries in London. He managed Camden’s central library Swiss Cottage during a huge £8m refurbishment and so got involved in public building projects. Mark explained: ‘looking back there is a strand – public libraries or galleries – the principle is a really good thing; it’s all about access. But they have struggled – how do they become relevant today; it’s what fascinates me. How do we at Tate reach out to the wider community?’ His job is to look after the Tate in

Cornwall with the rest of his team, and to complete the refurbishment and extension to the gallery. The first phase is already complete; they have a new, much more welcoming reception area and a resource room dedicated to the legacy of the St Ives modernists. In the next couple of years there will be a new learning suite for families and other groups, a new collection care suite .… and a large extension built into the hillside which will double the space for exhibitions. But, in conversation with Mark, it is noticeable how often he comes back to talking about people. He is fascinated by people, how to engage them in art, but also artists practicing today. He said: ‘we talk a lot about the historical artists, but there are many artists working in Cornwall right now – what does that mean? What are the challenges of working in rurally isolated spaces, how do they maintain connectivity and critical practice?’ He clearly sees some future role for Tate or the other art projects he is involved with – from Porthmeor Studios to Kestle Barton on the Lizard.
When not at work Mark enjoys spending time with people and being out in the landscape. A Buddhist with a love of Cornish Beer – the Tinners Arms and Halsetown Inn are his favourite pubs – and a penchant for Blasburgerworks in St Ives. He likes to go running – but not as often as he should. He explained: ‘you no longer feel anonymous – life is lived completely in Cornwall. A bit like the ‘Cheers’ sitcom, in St Ives you have the sense you know everyone – so have a shared investment in the community.’ After a ‘moments’ reflection he added: ‘it’s the landscape, the weather and its constant changing; we watch weather fronts go over our heads! I have discovered moonlight is nearly as bright as day here.’

Open only weekends at present, the Trust want to open the house more during July, August and September. We spoke to Jon Cummins at Trelissick to find out more: “We have been trialling opening these five rooms in the house this year and received great feedback, so we are going to extend our days of opening this summer. To do so we need to grow our team of volunteer Trelissick House Guides.” Jon adds: “If you want to find out more about the role and what volunteering could mean for you, give us a call or pop in and see us when you visit.” Plans for the future use and opening of the house beyond 2014 are still to be decided so it’s certainly worth a visit this year.

Secrets to Furnishing a Holiday Let
Many of you are buying a second home to run as a holiday let, so start with a blank canvas in terms of décor and furnishings. We spoke to Andy Easton of Beach Retreats who helped us with these top tips for getting it just right.
• Don’t skimp on quality – think John Lewis rather than IKEA. • Be careful about going overboard on interior spend too - £5,000 pieces of art on the wall or the latest ultra-high definition TV might create a wow factor, but will they generate more bookings? • De-personalise throughout the property; family photographs, heirlooms and items with sentimental value should be removed. • Be influenced by Cornwall. Your guests are drawn to the Cornwall brand and experience, so sourcing local pieces to finish of the property is a great way to add personality. • Be influenced by the local area. Pictures of the coastline, maps and local pieces of art are a great way to dress bare walls. Andy added, ‘One of our Beach Retreats owners wrote the name of their property in the sand on the nearby beach, had it stylishly photographed and professionally framed to hang in the entrance hall of their property. A perfect first impression!’ • Use pieces of furniture that are photogenic. Dark leather suites are durable and easier to keep clean, but harder to photograph. Remember photographs are key to attracting bookings.
• Avoid big blank areas such as wooden floors or walls as this gives the impression that the property is not finished or has been skimped on. • Ensure it is child friendly, as guests can be deterred by items such as glass coffee tables with sharp corners which are less visible to toddlers. • Add colour throughout the property, again coming back to the photographs of the rooms to avoid sterile and bland images.
ABOVE AND BELOW OPPOSITE Examples of ideas from Beach Retreat’s properties.
• Don’t over-clutter. Space is one of the great luxuries of self-catering so avoid overly large sofas and cramming in too many pieces. • Be sensible about the sleeping capacity. Cramming in beds and not providing enough seating in living and dining areas will create problems. • And finally zip and link beds are great for adding the flexibility to accommodate different groups of guests from three generations to families to couples.

Out On The Towan We have found a fantastic family retreat that is perfect for a Cornish beach holiday to remember.
I
t takes a very special property to be awarded the Visit England 4* Gold Award. Sleeping eight, Towan Veals is just that - a large semidetached family house just a short stroll from the beach and the Trevose Golf and Country Club. Having been refurbished throughout, it is a bright and airy property taking its inspiration from the beaches and coastline of the area and offers plenty of living space with a large open-plan kitchen/diner and two separate lounge areas. From the top floor, you also have distant sea-views across the rooftops towards Constantine Bay. Towan Veals is not only ideal for family beach holidays but, with wood burners and open fires throughout the house, it is also perfect for families and couples wanting to explore the coastline in the winter months. You will find Town Veals in Constantine village, which is close to St Merryn and the hamlet of Towan. The bay and village are named after Saint Constantine, a 6th century Cornish saint, and St Constantine’s Well, a historic site, is accessible by a public right of way across Trevose Golf Club’s golf course. Constantine has a useful village store selling a selection of groceries, fresh
fruit, bread and newspapers and the Constantine Surf Shop sells all the beach gear, wetsuits and body boards you could need for a day in the waves. The beach itself is superb – wide, sandy and fringed by sand dunes. It is a lovely spot for walking or picnicking and with rock pools at either end, a great place for exploring when the tide is out. This is a very popular spot for surfing, although at low tide you may need to go around to nearby Booby’s Bay. The Bay is lifeguard patrolled during high season and dogs are permitted year round. Parking is limited at the beach car park, but you can park at Treyarnon and walk the delightful coastal path which only takes about 10 minutes. Down at the beach you will find also Coastal Coffee (April to September), a fantastic little van selling freshly ground speciality coffees, hot chocolate, homemade flapjacks and brownies – a real treat after a day on the sand!

Finding Poetry At Truro College’s recent Higher Education Open Day, English Studies students encouraged prospective students and visiting parents to get in touch with their creative side and “Find Poetry.”
C
utting, sticking and crafting short poems from recycled newspapers and magazines led to student Claire O’Hagan being commissioned to make some for sale at a local gallery called Everyday Struggles in Newquay. As well as finding poetry, Claire is seizing other opportunities presented by the creative and vocational strands of the Foundation Degree in English Studies. She is going to run poetry workshops at festivals this summer and has also has been asked to be an assistant editor at TOAST, a publication for all university students in Cornwall. Students, like Claire, can opt to follow a journalism pathway. Recently, Rory Fong undertook a two week work placement with a local newspaper. He had over sixty articles published and the portfolio of work he produced led to him securing a place at Southampton Solent University and gaining a first class honours degree in Journalism. Rory has now been accepted onto Sky News’ Diversity Scheme. For another former student, Amanda George, the course was a springboard to a successful career in publishing. She now holds an editorial position at
Oxford University Press and said “The FDA at Truro College was a great way for me to pursue a literary-based career, and continue to study in the beautiful surroundings of Cornwall. As well as having an exciting regional flavour, the course has a great vocational approach which really helped me to envisage the practical applications of my writing when thinking about future jobs. I had a great couple of years, the staff and facilities were sound, and I built some great lasting friendships.” Many students progress to a teaching career but all students are encouraged to map out a pathway that supports their particular ambitions. Amanda explained, “As the course is an applied route of study, learning is interlinked with the real world, allowing the transition into future careers to be a smooth one and giving students a competitive edge on that front. I cannot recommend this route of study enough!”
