Cornwall is buzzing at this time of the year, with all sorts of festivals going on - foodie fairs, arts events, music and all the traditional local town and country events. In this issue we cover the Tall Ship Regatta, the biggest sea-faring celebration taking place in Falmouth this year. From watching the first of the Tall Ships arrive on the 28th August through to the Grand Parade of Sail out through Falmouth Bay on the 31st August – find out all about it and how to recognise the different types of ships (page 12 ). Along with all things sailing, we feature the brilliantly colourful paintings of John Dyer artist in residence for the Tall Ships Regatta (page 44). Summer is also the time for family gatherings, parties and wonderful weddings! We went to the Alverton Hotel to talk find out about summer celebrations in style (page 35) and there is the chance to win a romantic break for two at the Alverton (page 78 - 79). The lovely people at the Greenbank Hotel told us about their fantastic waterfront facilities for a truly special wedding (page 30 31). There are some great properties for sale if you are hoping to move here – and some great holiday ideas if it’s just a visit.

Truro College’s Archaeology Degree gives you a real educational experience! BELOW Students inspect the burnt out remains of a WWII German bunker at Santec, Brittany BOTTOM Recent conservation work on the impressive Tarr Steps clapper bridge on Exmoor

S

Among the other exciting trips, the students explore the South West. They visited Exmoor National Park to see their latest digital technologies for searching and recording sites. Students managed to take in an excursion to see the recently repaired and conserved Tarr Steps, the longest clapper bridge in Britain. A clapper bridge is one made entirely from giant stone slabs or boulders and this one is a 17-span bridge dating from at least Tudor times. Final year students always design and produce an exhibition. This year’s exhibition was entitled “Life Underground”. As part of this students explored a number of local mines including Rosevale Mine and Levant Mine. They experimented with different torches and candles, as well as drills and other equipment to see the effects of underground workings on light and sound. The exhibition has been to Heartlands, at Pool and the Tamar AONB Trails Centre in Gulworthy, Devon.

tudents can study for a three year Plymouth University Archaeology degree at Truro College. One feature that students particularly enjoy is the annual Brittany trip. This year, they visited a Bronze Age cemetery on a small tidal island, ancient salt works from the Iron Age and Roman periods, Poullin (flax ponds) from Brittany’s once flourishing textile industry and finally the burnt out remains of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall.

Patch & Acre comes to Helston Cornwall Farmers has been at the heart of rural life since 1920. With a strong history and heritage in farming and agriculture, the farmer owner cooperative is currently rolling out a £2.3 million investment project which includes refitting a number of their stores under the new Patch & Acre Country Store name. At the end of July the new-look Helston Store will be unveiled. The investment in the town will see the current Cornwall Farmers store on the Water Ma Trout Industrial Estate upgraded with new product lines added. The outside of the store will also be developed to create a new main entrance to make room for more gardening equipment and farming displays. Simon Birch, chief executive of Cornwall Farmers said, “Once Helston’s Patch & Acre facelift is complete, people will find increased product lines in all of our six core trading areas; farm, stable, pet, garden, country life and farmhouse. We’ll also be extending our opening hours from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 10am - 4pm on Sunday.” The store will be launching with a family Fun Day on Saturday 26 July from 10am. Cornwall Gold and Cornwall Pearl celebrate 25 years Cornwall Gold and Cornwall Pearl have delighted visitors with a combination of heritage, fine jewellery and family fun for 25 years. The business has installed a new, stylish showroom and MD Dervla Jarratt told us “We are absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to launch our own ‘Tolgus Tin’ jewellery collection using our own tin, sourced, processed and smelted here on site. This has been quite an achievement and one which we are very proud of, for us this commemorates our 25 years here in Cornwall remarkably well and sets the standard for our next 25 years.” The celebrations took place on Friday 4th July, where supporters and friends of the business enjoyed an evening of live music, Cornish food and entertainment. A presentation ceremony also took place on the evening where Sharron Foster from Truro College and Kirsty Swinford from Camborne College received their awards for winning Cornwall Gold’s 25th year jewellery design competition. Both of the winners’ collections are now on display and on sale at Cornwall Gold and Cornwall Pearl. Find out more at www.cornwall-gold.com

Shockwave Therapy for Tendon problems.

The Sketch Scheme

Now patients that have been suffering for years with chronic pain may be successfully treated with “Shockwave Therapy” using the latest high tech nonsurgical equipment.

This is your architects’ first attempt at interpreting your brief. They will have provided you with some options, some you might have suggested and hopefully some you had not. There is no right or wrong design merely the best one for your needs.

“Shockwave Therapy” can be useful in treating • Plantar fasciitis, • Achilles tendonitis, • Tennis and golfers elbow, • Calcific tendonitis of the shoulder, • Greater trochanter pain • Patellar tendonopathy. What is “Shock Wave Therapy”? Shockwave Therapy delivers a radial shockwave through the surface of the skin to the injured tissue. This shockwave initiates an inflammation-like response in the injured tissue and accelerates the healing process by regenerating blood vessels. It also provides pain relief for the patient. Treatment is simple and takes minutes. There is no need for an anaesthetic or lengthy rehabilitation. Until now surgery has been the only available alternative for chronic sufferers. How to access treatment at Duchy Hospital? Call the Physiotherapy department on 01872 226105 to discuss your suitability for treatment. You can access the service directly and self pay prices are available on request.

But I hate it! That is great news. How you might wonder. Well if there is nothing you don’t like, it means we have found all the things you don’t want or like so we can ensure they are not included in subsequent designs. Don’t be afraid of saying what you think about a design, it is after all a suggestion. But I love all of the options! As a designer that’s great to hear but a bit problematic for you as the client. Take some time and look closely at the designs to see what you like. Are there some common themes such as maximised view, great circulation, and beautiful staircase? Then you can discuss about incorporating elements or refining your preferred design. Consider the materials and finishes you would like to use as well. Take your time At this stage every wall you move is free. You are just moving ink lines on a page. Spend the time and get this right, ensure you understand the building. You can ask for sections and other information to help you understand the proposed building. Consider some issues such as housing the ironing board and Christmas tree, can you take your coat off in the lobby, will your sofa fit in the lounge? Making changes when a builder is on site is difficult and expensive and may not be as simple as you think. At this stage the construction will have been worked out and there might be repercussions that you are not aware of. Your architect is here to assist you and help you get the most from your project, so please take your time to understand the designs and listen to any advice they have to give you. All the best with your project and next time we will look at planning applications! Simon D3 Architects, Design Delight Deliver For more information visit www.d3architects.co.uk or call 01872 260421

The Tall Ships are coming back to Falmouth this summer. Don’t miss out on a minute of the spectacular sights and fun-packed festivities with our guide to what’s going on during their four-day stay with us in Cornwall

A

t the end of August, Falmouth will again welcome the incredible sight of the majestic tall ships as they return for the Tall Ships Regatta and race. It has been six years since the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta and this year’s extravaganza, organised by Sail Training International, is set to be the largest event to be held in the southwest in 2014. Dating back to 1956, Sail Training was established as a charity to organise the first annual tall ships race, with the aim of offering young people the life-changing experience of sailing on historical ships; as a result more than half the crew of each Sail Trainingaffiliated ship, taking part, must be aged between 15 and 25. A representative of the organisation told us: “The trainees will find out first-hand what they can achieve when they push themselves beyond their comfort zone. It is an

experience they will remember for the rest of their lives and will give them invaluable skills.” We are part of an island nation with a truly rich naval history, thanks mainly to Henry VIII’s ambitions and profligacy. Whether taking part in international trade, naval warfare or playing a role in expansive human migrations, from the 16th century onwards, our fleet became a force to be reckoned with. Falmouth has its own impressive maritime history, of course: together with the Carrick Roads, it is renowned as the third-deepest natural harbour in the world and has been a working port for centuries. After becoming the Royal Mail packet station in 1688 the town was, for more than 150 years, second only to London for knowledge of what was going on in the world. This regatta - the biggest international sailing event to be held solely in English

waters - links Falmouth with London again, as both locations will be jointly hosting this year’s regatta and race. John Hick, the chairman of Falmouth Tall Ships Association, explained, “You don’t need to be a seasoned sailor to feel moved by the sight of these incredible ships. From both a historic and geographical point of view, Falmouth sets them off to perfection.” After setting off on Sunday, 31st August, the ships will race eastwards to the finish line just off the Isle of Wight, then they will parade up the Thames and berth at Royal Greenwich for another five days of celebrations. The race will not be the only thing on offer to Cornish spectators though. After the white sail tips start to crest the horizon from Thursday, 28th August, the larger ships will head to County Wharf and Duchy Wharf, where they will be open to the public until 30th August inclusive. This is an amazing opportunity

to gain insight into what life and work on board was – and is – like on these vessels, and access will be free. During the ships’ days in dock there will also be a mass of fun events happening shore side, including live music day and night, children’s activities, food markets, street entertainment, as well as displays and exhibitions, most of which will be free. On 29th August, there will be inter-ship sports at Gyllyngvase Beach, followed by a crew parade through town, with crew members sporting full uniform or fancy dress. Then, on the evening of August 30th, a grand finale before the ships depart: the sky will be illuminated with a farewell firework display over Carrick Roads – a sight not to be missed. On the morning of 31st August, there will be a spectacular Parade of Sail, accompanied by a large spectator fleet, the race ships will depart Falmouth harbour, sailing between Henry VIII’s twin Tudor castles of Pendennis and St Mawes, to the starting point in Falmouth Bay. 100,000 spectators are anticipated to take advantage of the amazing view of the ships in full sail in the natural arena provided by the bay; stretching from St Anthony in Roseland right round to Rosemullion Head near the Helford. The number of vessels entered for the race this year has exceeded expectations

The Regatta of 2008 generated £12 million for the local economy and attracted worldwide attention, there are high hopes that this year’s event will surpass that. For the trainee crew members the challenges could include anything from setting the sails, climbing the rigging, or steering a compass course, to keeping watch and preparing meals. As well as enjoying the sights and sounds of so many Tall ships gathered together in one place! When we asked the organisers which was their favourite vessel, they were unable to commit – it seemed a bit like making them choose a preferred child – but when

pressed on which was the favourite to win, ‘Duet’ was mentioned several times. Launched in 1912, she celebrated her 100th birthday with a round-the-world voyage completed in seven legs. The countdown is on, so all aboard for the county’s most unforgettable event this year.

ast Berriow is located within a delightful rural location set in a lightly sloping south facing valley. The property is protected from the north-west by rising farmland that continues on towards the spectacular Bodmin Moor. There are beautiful southerly views of gently undulating farmland and partly wooded valleys flowing down from the house towards the valley. The villages of Bathpool, North Hill, Rilla Mill and Upton Cross are all within easy reach and provide a range of local amenities. The larger towns of Liskeard and Launceston provide a good range of shopping, educational and recreational facilities as well as direct access to both the A38 and the A30. The property’s unrivalled setting is ideal for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits with superb walking, riding and fishing in the area, and both the north and south coasts of Cornwall are easily accessible. East Berriow is steeped in local history, dating back to the 16th century, reputedly first built for a high ranking yeoman, and as the first house in North Hill it collected taxes from surrounding villages. Its original detached cider press barn is still intact and the stables have now been incorporated into the house. East Berriow

is a simply stunning property which has been beautifully restored and improved with lots of love and careful thought. The house itself is simply glorious. The entrance hall sets the scene with delightful oak beams and lovely old arch topped doors. The sitting room is truly spectacular with mullioned windows and a beautiful wood burning stove all furnished with gorgeous antiques. The dining room boasts a marvelous open inglenook fireplace complete with a cloam oven. There is a clever link to the barn that houses the charming farmhouse style kitchen and there is a family bathroom that would look at home in the best of spas. Upstairs there are two bedrooms over the barn, with three further bedrooms in the main part of the house. adstow has become one of the most sought after locations to live in Cornwall. With its wonderful mix of boutique shops, cafes and of course fantastic restaurants, this once sleepy harbour town has now become a thriving and metropolitan place in which to live. Just imagine watching the boats land their catch before it’s taken off to a nearby restaurant or catching the ferry across to Rock to watch the sun go down. This lifestyle could be yours to enjoy with this great property. Its elevated position means that the views are fantastic and a first floor sitting room, with a glass balustrade, ensure that these are taken full advantage of. The kitchen diner is a modern delight and its large picture windows also look out across that captivating view. With a granite-topped circular island unit and breakfast bar and room for a substantial dining table there is plenty of space here in which to entertain friends or for a large family to dine in comfort. The majority of the bedrooms are on this floor and these are contemporary in their styling – cool and comfortable, decorated with ocean-inspired colours. Two of the bedrooms on this floor have en-suites and

there is a third room that could either be used as a bedroom or would make a useful study for home-working. One of the ground floor bedrooms and the first floor bedroom has what every girl wishes for, a separate dressing area, with lots of built-in wardrobe space – Carrie Bradshaw eat your heart out! Add an en-suite with Jacuzzi bath in the first floor bedroom and you have the prefect bedroom suite in which to soak away the pressures of the day before getting dressed for dinner. A sweeping, bricked drive leads up to the property and a click of the remote will open the garage door for you. The rest of the outside space has been terraced with decked gardens, illuminated by inset lighting at night, and an elegant roof terrace on which you can soak up the sun or watch it dip in the sky across the Camel Estuary.

f you are looking for a property that can provide both an income and a residence, or perhaps you are after a large family home, then Bro Tref could be just what you are looking for. You will find this property in the heart of the Cornish village of St Mawgan and from first sight you can’t fail to fall in love with it. It is currently split into two homes and the quality and attention to detail throughout is obvious. The first of the properties has two spacious reception rooms downstairs in which character features abound, including a Cornish stone fireplace and exposed Cornish stone walls. The modern kitchen diner is a lovely social space in which to gather to eat. Upstairs there are three double bedrooms, two with en-suite facilities and a fourth single room. The second property has the added bonus of a third floor and it too has a spacious sitting room with an original feature fireplace and cloam oven. A slate floor in the contemporary kitchen sets off the pale wood units perfectly. There are three bedrooms and a family bathroom on the next floor and up on the top floor a fourth bedroom, with en-suite, has a great vista. Both of the properties have excellent sized rooms, which are bright and airy with light flooding in from the garden. This is a raised lawn with a pretty pond

where you can imagine sitting, soaking up the sun with a glass of something cold in hand. This property just keeps on giving, as within the grounds there is also a derelict detached cottage. Although it requires renovation it has superb potential for conversion to guest accommodation or a holiday home (subject to the necessary building regulations and planning permissions). St Mawgan itself is a charming Cornish village with wisteria clinging to the front of local pub, the Falcon Inn. There is a primary school here as well as a local village stores for day-to-day needs, with nearby Newquay providing supermarket shopping and senior schools. Newquay Cornwall Airport, with flights to many major UK cities, is only three miles away and the north coast beaches, including Watergate Bay, are within a few minutes’ drive. This unique property could be the gateway to the ultimate Cornish lifestyle you’ve been looking for.

T

hree Vicarage Gardens is a charming, detached property in the sought-after hamlet of Egloshayle. Built in 1987 within the original grounds of the village vicarage, this house would make a fantastic family home. The accommodation is very versatile and there is the added benefit of extensive garaging and a second garage/workshop. All this is set within wonderfully large and private walled gardens – a lovely, safe space in which all the family can relax and play. Looking out from the property there are splendid views of Egloshayle Church and across the local wetlands and River Camel. You approach from a private cul-de-sac over a graveled driveway and in through a central entrance door. This leads to a grand and inviting reception hall with a turned staircase and galleried landing. The substantial and inviting lounge has a magnificent fireplace for warming those toes on cold winter evenings and patio doors that can be thrown open onto the gardens at the rear on sunny days. The dining room also overlooks the garden and if you venture to the other side of the hall you will find a useful study. The kitchen is fitted with a range of floor and wall units and a door leads from here into the separate utility room with access both to the garden at the rear and the converted garage. This cleverly

planned set of rooms means that wet and sandy children or pets can be cleaned off after a day on the beach before they are let loose inside the house. At present the converted garage provides a second living room/bedroom and shower room and has great potential as a self contained annexe or guest accommodation. Finally, up on the first floor you will find four bedrooms, three of which are en-suite, and a family bathroom. The outside of 3 Vicarage Gardens is as impressive as the inside. The lovely, south-facing large rear gardens are mainly lawned, interspersed with trees that provide dappled shade in summer. Egloshayle itself is a pretty village on the outskirts of Wadebridge. It lies on the banks of the River Camel and boasts the Earl Of St Vincent pub, steeped in history and renowned for its good food and atmosphere. Nearby Wadebridge is a thriving market town with a selection of shops and amenities including a sports centre, cinema, primary and secondary schools.

B

oscadjack Mill House, which is believed to have been an operational Mill until 1850, is now an outstanding home, full of charm, with many character features including beamed and vaulted ceilings, extensive granite stonework, latched doors, tiled floors and much more. There is a delightful ‘live in’ kitchen with plenty of room for family breakfasts or entertaining friends around the kitchen table and the exposed granite walls and chunky beams give the room a traditional feel. There is also a separate dining room on this floor along with a useful shower room. Set over three floors you will find most of the sleeping accommodation on the second floor with three of the bedrooms here as well as a bathroom. Venture up to the third floor and you will find the most magnificent lounge. This triple aspect room has incredible vaulted, beamed ceilings and a feature fireplace that houses a multi fuel burner. The master bedroom is also on the top floor – deep tiled sills, exposed stonework and another vaulted ceiling make this a glorious place to rest your weary head and you won’t have to walk far for a soak in the bath as this room has the added bonus of an en-suite.

Boscadjack Mill House is set within its own formal garden that has an idyllic pond and orchard. There are a further two and a half acres (approximate) of land plus stable blocks, a tack room and double garage. The property is currently a registered small-holding and there are a further five acres (approximate) of land available to rent if required. This would be an exceptional property for anyone with either an interest in horticulture or of an equestrian mind. The nearest town to the property is Helston that has a great mix of boutique shops, traditional pubs and elegant Georgian town houses. The vibrant seaside towns of Falmouth and St Ives are both a mere half hour’s drive away, Britain’s most southerly point at The Lizard is a similar distance and the stunning beaches of the north and south coasts are easily accessible from this exceptional property.

A

ctively looking for a second home it wasn’t until Matt & Philly Hilton from Bristol, with their three children, stumbled across Corisande Manor and Apartment 1 last Christmas Eve that they decided they would actually take the plunge and purchase a property in Cornwall! Taken completely aback by the beautiful estuary setting, the majesty of the building with its eccentric turrets and grand terraces together with the ever-changing view of the river, they immediately called the Acorn Blue sales team and set up a viewing for the day after Boxing Day and have never looked back. The only property now remaining for sale in the development is 5 Corisande Manor, a fabulous two bedroom duplex apartment over the top floors of this architecturally distinctive building. The open plan living area with its engineered wood flooring has two delightful south facing balconies from which to enjoy watching the sun disappear over the Atlantic. The contemporary interior is light and airy with fixtures and fittings of

the highest specification and exemplary finishes. The kitchen is modern with the latest Leicht units and includes a range of Siemens integrated appliances; the bathroom and en-suite are luxurious with contemporary white Villeroy & Boch sanitary ware, thermostatic shower and porcelain tiling. Both bedrooms have stunning vistas of Crantock Beach and the Gannel; with bedroom 2 also having access to the quirky tower room; a great playroom for children or study/ snug for grown ups! The apartment has

allocated parking, a surf store cage for all the beach paraphernalia associated with coastal living, access to communal landscaped gardens and private access to the river beach. Since moving in the Hilton family are really embracing the north Cornish lifestyle. Not into water sports before buying the apartment the family have already been enticed by the water on their doorstep and have bought a kayak which they all love using and now are considering trying paddle boarding. They relish walking along the coast path with their dog, sampling the culinary delights of the ’foodie’ scene Cornwall is becoming renowned for. They also enjoy visiting art exhibitions and galleries, another new found interest, and have already bought a couple of pieces by local artists to decorate their new home. When asked about what the best bit of the apartment is Philly said that whilst the outside space and communal gardens that lead on to the jetty are an obvious choice, her favourite spot is the island in the kitchen where she can prepare food and look through the bay window

down the Gannel to Crantock Beach. Despite the secluded spot Corisande is only a short stroll from the hustle and bustle of the infamous Fistral beach and across from the dog friendly Crantock beach. Nearby haunts include the Fern Pitt Café, a delightful place to enjoy freshly caught crab and lobster, or the Lewinnick Lodge which has an enviable cliff top location. The cathedral city of Truro is only half an hour away with its eclectic mix of boutique and high street shops, restaurants and cafes, with rail connections to Plymouth, Exeter and London. Whether 5 Corisande Manor is a permanent retreat, an occasional holiday home or a buy-to-let, it’s just seven miles from Newquay Airport, so speedy connections to and from many major cities make it a highly viable proposition.

n the market for the first time, and completed by the current owners parents in the 1950’s, this is a simple yet classically ‘beachy’ property. The living space and most bedrooms have been arranged to make the most of the view. It’s easy to imagine hunkering down in a storm in front of the open fire in the living room or getting up to watch a new day dawn from the dining room whilst tucking into breakfast. The routine here would be simple, revolving around the beach, rockpooling, surfing, playing cricket at sunset, and then doing it all again the next day. The kitchen has been designed to have a broad, open-plan serving counter to the dining room – no need to miss out on the view or be unsociable and there is plenty of cupboard space plus a large pantry/store cupboard. There is a double bedroom on the ground floor and a family bathroom. Heading upstairs, there is a large central landing with three double bedrooms and a single bedroom – this is the only room that has some restricted head height. There is a modern shower room with a white suite and a large and light landing. Life at Chypraze House will soothe your soul, whether you buy it as a holiday

home or live here full time you will never tire of this wonderful place. The coast path is ideal for exploring and the lanes make for pleasurable cycling whether you’re a budding ‘Wiggins’ or after something more leisurely. A path from the end of the drive takes you to a sandy cove with a good surf break for boogie boarding. There is a natural sea pool too, and pretty open fishing boats land their catch in the adjacent cove. The closest village community is Morvah with its granite houses and 14th century church. Penzance is about eight miles away where you will find a bustling town with many independent and multinational stores, banks, art galleries, restaurants, schools and the mainline train station with a direct link to London Paddington. Newquay Airport is 48 miles away with regular flights to London and Manchester.

t is rare that a property like this comes up for sale and with its position on a private estate, in one of the most prestigious locations in Cornwall, this delightful farmhouse will certainly not be on the market for long. The house is traditional in many ways, with stone-built construction, but also benefits from some lovely interior, contemporary features that only serve to add to its charm. An Aga keeps the kitchen/diner warm in winter, while a multi fuel stove in the sitting room and open fireplace in the music room all add to the traditional ambience. Believed to have been built in the early 20th century the house has been extended over the years so that now it is an ideal home for those with a growing family or a penchant for entertaining. A wonderful garden room has just been added to the west side of the house. Here you can sit back and relax, catching glimpses of the sparkling sea beyond the trees. Rosteague has a magical feeling about it as you sweep up the private estate drive. Set amidst over an acre of mature gardens and grounds an atmosphere of peace and tranquility is everywhere. Beyond the gardens, the unspoiled surroundings of

the Rosteague country estate mean you have attractive woodland and lovely views across the fields to the sea and cliffs of Killigerran Head right on your doorstep. Rosteague Farmhouse is just over a mile from the village of Portscatho, and neighbouring Gerrans, which between them offer a range of shops, pubs and amenities, including a village school. You are also only a stone’s throw from St Mawes. Centred around a small stone harbour, here you will find a vibrant sailing club, a castle and a selection of good pubs and restaurants, including of course, Olga Polizzi’s Hotel Tresanton which continues to lure the rich and famous. Further sailing facilities can be found at nearby Percuil, and there are many beautiful beaches in the area with an abundance of coastal and inland walks, most of which are owned and protected by the National Trust.

From an intimate birthday meal for two, to a wedding, dance or award ceremony for up to 130, the welcoming team at the Greenbank is committed to ensuring every last detail runs smoothly. Let a master mixologist in the Lounge Bar prepare your favourite cocktail and then sink into a comfy chair with your girlfriends as you celebrate your hen party in sophisticated style. Step outside onto a sundrenched terrace and drink in the fresh sea air as a brand new Mr and Mrs and watch the moonlight reflect off the water as you enjoy your special day. Contemporary style combines with a wealth of history at the Greenbank (did you know Kenneth Grahame’s Wind in the Willows began life here?) to give your guests a unique slice of buoyant coastal living. Not to mention the breathtaking waterfront views at every turn.

Room to celebrate From the Quarterdeck to the Riverbank Suite, the Greenbank has a host of different rooms and spaces so you can be sure there’s one to suit the size of your celebration. Perfect for relaxed, private dining, the Sundeck features large windows that afford gorgeous, panoramic views of Falmouth harbour. This is also a popular spot for smaller wedding ceremonies. The Quarterdeck is an outdoor, decked space that’s perfect for private canapé and cocktail parties, and is especially popular as a VIP private viewing area for special Falmouth events like the Red Arrows or Tall Ships. Right at the top of the hotel, the Riverbank Suite is large enough to host award ceremonies, larger weddings and dinner dances. Jane Williams, Wedding & Events Manager, who’s on hand to help with larger events, tells us the hotel has recently increased capacity from 90 to 130 for sit down meals following customer feedback from couples wanting to share their special day with larger numbers of family and friends. The natural choice If you have a keen eye for beauty, versatility and durability, you’ll know that stone is the way to go. Whether that is a luxurious marble stone floor or granite tiles for commercial buildings, we have a couple of tips for you.

MAIN A selection of luxury stone and marble tiles BELOW Fitted kitchen tiles

P

urchasing a stone floor is a huge commitment. Whatever you choose, slate, travertine, limestone, marble – they are all in it for the long term. The materials have been around eons before we existed and will likely out live us all. That’s not to say that a stone floor is totally indestructible. Bear in mind that the most dangerous thing that a stone floor can face are the twin demons of our lifestyle and our whimsical nature when it comes to trends and taste. So the best way to make sure that your stone floor can make the most of its natural longevity is to know plenty about what you are buying. So our first tip, which will help narrow down your search, is know your stone. Each piece of stone had been crafted in a highly unique way, and I don’t mean by hand, and the result? You get various different qualities, right down to the mineral structure. Marble has a crystallike texture, making it especially hard and durable, which makes it especially good for those high traffic areas.

Secondly think function, this will make your stone floor more than just beautiful, but functional – which is always a double win in my book. Firstly, where is the floor going to be laid, high traffic, low traffic, in direct sunlight or in a wet environment. For example, sandstone’s rough texture is both hardwearing and handsome making it perfect for kitchens and bathrooms. Wherever you lay it, be sure that it will work for you before you buy, I know that it sounds simple, but now is not the time to buy purely on impulse, I promise you that it will be worth your while - there are a lot of If you’re likel y to see sun in the beautiful products room, go for a matt finish til e such out there. as slate, it will still look gorg eous Whatever you choose, and reduce gl are. it will have that certain something that you can’t quite put your finger on, a quality that you will never find on any factory made or faux products, for starters, each tile in your floor is one of a kind. And when you really think about the depth of history and geology behind it, it really is quite mind blowing.

Une Aventura

à la Français

As a woman of retirement age Lesley was looking for a more flexible way to explore France during the summer months.

S

BELOW Let your travels take you anywhere

he had toyed with the idea of having a campervan for years, so with a vague idea of what she wanted she contacted Tranzwagon, a campervan conversion company in Penryn. They provide a full campervan conversion service and also flat pack camper van furniture for most models. Lesley explained: “I wanted an everyday drivable vehicle that would be a comfortable, fully functional home from home whist away. The lovely technicians at Tranzwagon helped me decide on the perfect set up and I’m now the proud owner of a silver VW T5 campervan, which has everything I could possibly need and things I hadn’t even considered possible.” She went on’ “I like nothing more than travelling around unexplored countryside, stopping occasionally to enjoy a view, investigate an interesting village, historical site or new city centre. There are so many features of the van that contribute to a great day out or weekend away; the higher driving position makes assessing other traffic much easier, especially abroad; the width allows me to drive easily down the smallest lanes or into a busy city with no problems and, most importantly, park

in any normal parking space. I can stop anytime, anywhere and make myself a cup of coffee, take a nap or go walk about. On longer trips I have every home comfort: a kitchenette to prepare a tasty meal, a relaxing armchair and table area to read, sew, watch a DVD, power supplied by solar panel for light, refrigerator and IT equipment, a luxury bed and independent thermostatic heating for those chilly nights and mornings. It has a pop-top roof that can sleep two more if needed. A dear friend made me promise to keep a small jam jar with me to put a few wild flowers in when I stop - it turns a practical van into a very comfy home! I have to say it’s opened up a whole new world of freedom and adventure. So for anyone at the same stage of life as I am, with more time on your hands, life just couldn’t be better with a campervan.”

A lesson in mosaics Having always been curious about creating art with mosaics, I popped into Tesserae Gallery and enjoyed a workshop with resident artist, Madhu Greet. A

t first a student, and then a teacher, Madhu’s love for learning and sharing has never waned since she first made the jump from fine art to mosaic. And I can’t help but feel that there’s a certain rebellious nature against the need to be precise, as you would in some art forms, and instead opting for the irregularity of mosaics. You see, what makes a stint of mosaic fun is the playful and therapeutic nature of it. I asked Madhu if this is just me needing to unwind, and she smiles and said, “no it’s funny, a lot of people say that. I think it’s because the part of your brain that is usually taken up with worry is occupied with cutting and placing – it’s kind of like a jigsaw, but you make the image and cut out the pieces.” As a great arts and crafts excursion from your holiday, or indeed day-to-day life, there is no need to bring anything but yourself along to one of Madhu’s workshops. Everything is provided, including the tea, and you are taught all you need to know from the basics to more advanced insider know-how. You

start completely from scratch - from your design and initial sketch, you then hand cut the pieces and off you go, starting with the detail first. The final part of the process is also Madhu’s favourite. We predict a

From the paintbrush of local artist John Dyer come incredible explosions of colour. As the Tall Ships Regatta approaches, we look at how his work reflects and celebrates the excitement of the event

tand before one of John Dyer’s paintings and you won’t know where to look first. The colours are mesmerising – you are at once bathed in the beautiful blues you know so well from the endless Cornish skies and seas, and hypnotised by the enlivening hues that pop out from the canvas. Seagulls wheel, boats bob, flags flap, swimmers and seals jump in the waves, fireworks crackle on an inky backdrop in Tall Ship Lovers, people cheer from the coast and embrace. These happy spectators are just as transfixed by the action as you are. As one of the country’s best-known ‘plein-air’ artists, Dyer employs an effective and enveloping approach to light and atmosphere that has gained him countless plaudits. A follower of the Naïve School of art, made famous by Cornish artists including Alfred Wallis and Bryan Pearce, he paints with barely a nod to perspective and uses colour that is always strident, never blurred. The gigantic,

vibrant flowers at the forefront of Parade of Sail brush against our arms as we watch the scene unfold, and the implied breeze is welcome in the warmth of the day. Dyer’s style is typically simplistic and, as his many collectors can attest, the big, bright, bold results are unwaveringly energising and arresting. It’s unsurprising, then, to find that Falmouth-based Dyer has been appointed for the third time as the artist-in-residence for the Tall Ships Regatta, and so has been busy producing a series of paintings capturing the spirit of the FalmouthLondon event. He has also been hard at work setting up his Arts Council-supported BIG Art and Storytelling Tall Ships Project, inspiring thousands of children across the UK to get involved with the experience, too. “People love the Tall Ships – the atmosphere it creates in Falmouth and the pure visual feast of it all. I love it, too!” says Dyer. And yes, that’s his work on the front of the official programme, so hang on to it – with his paintings hanging in the

HOME on the Range We visited Cornwall Woodburners Showroom and were surprised by the diversity of products on offer.

F

or anyone who is a fan of cooking and cuisine, these range cookers are not the old fashioned cookers that people may think. They come in ultra efficient gas and oil models along with the traditional wood and solid fuel. You can even have an A rated electric version with all the look and feel of a traditional range with the advantages of a modern cooker I know one of my first concerns was how responsive and controllable the heat would be. But with a range cooker you will get the best of both worlds – it’s solidity and reliability (the kind that you can only find with a range) as well as the controllability and responsiveness that you would expect from a modern electric cooker. With ‘power share technology’ you can

direct the heat around your cooker as you wish. If you don’t use the hob you can direct all the available energy to the oven, which means quicker preheating times and less overall energy consumption. You can still use both the hot plate and the oven together; the total power will simply circulate through the entire range. One thing that you will get with an electric range, is a ‘slumber mode’. This means that the range cooker will retain a small amount of background heat, so the range is always ready to go. You can also use it as a simple, on off appliance. Though to be honest, the residual heat from the stove is really quite comforting so you can be forgiven if you’re caught hugging your range cooker.

CASE STUDY The client’s origi nal bungalow wa s demolished and a new state of th e art ecohome was built , which could ac commodate both the ethical outlook on life an d the growing family of this client. Th e EaseBuild team jumped at the opportunity to create the sustainable eco-home, bein g one of their specialities , they knew just how to make the build a success.

ABOVE The new home’s light and spacious interior, a real family freindly home. INSET The stunning modern exterior to this stylish eco-home

is, that once you have discussed and arranged a budget that works for you, those expectations are managed and the build will continue working with a ‘no surprises’ ethos. This means regular updates on both the project and the budget. It is a welcome ‘open book’ approach, which firmly keeps you in the driving seat as the work on your home progresses. Any major building project can seem a bit daunting, but it really needn’t be too intrusive, the EaseBuild team can work around your busy family, social and work life – even if you are expecting visitors. So whether you decide to go for a competely new build or add an extension to an older property it needs to be done with integrity. And if you have something

highly specific in mind, a desire to compliment the original features of your home while modernising others, that’s not a problem either. Their knowledgeable and creative teams are keen problem solvers and will even source materials, which are in keeping with the existing building to ensure that extensions fit in seamlessly and any modern features work in harmony with your home.

Get Ready

For Summer Living You can always tell when Cornwall is enjoying a sudden spell of sunny weather by the empty salad shelves in the supermarket aisles and the mad rush on burgers and drumsticks...

s ever, with the first glimpse of summer sun many of us make that hasty dash to the garden centre to revive our windswept gardens and beautify them for what we hope will be a glorious summer spent outdoors. Then, of course, comes the great debate about whether with a lick of paint or a litre of teak oil the garden furniture can withstand another season... If you can’t face the slog of repainting or oiling and are looking for a replacement, it’s important to know what you are buying, as on the surface it may seem that all rattan garden furniture is the same... “The key factor to consider when making your purchase is the metal frame of the furniture,” explains Lucie Howard, Creative Director of the HomeShed design

team. “Rattan garden furniture supplied by big chain supermarkets and DIY stores is generally cheaper because is it made from a steel frame, which when exposed to rain and the Cornish salty sea air will rust and corrode. The alternative is aluminium frame rattan furniture, which although slightly more expensive will last much longer, as unlike steel, aluminium doesn’t rust.” “In terms of style, cube dining table sets are now incredibly popular because of their compact design when not in use. The cushioned stools fit neatly underneath the seats and easily increase your dining table from a 4-seater to an 8-seater or a 6 to 10-seater - perfect when you have more friends or family around the table. Plus, the 2 to 4-seater cube is

ideal for balconies, as it effortlessly stows away to free up your balcony space.” Grey is this season’s hottest trend in rattan in a wide flat weave which adds a very contemporary effect to your garden or terrace. Alternatively, if you are only planning to use your furniture in a conservatory setting, the natural colour of traditional woven rattan works best with solid wood tables. The HomeShed design team absolutely love this reclaimed teak table which is designed for both outdoor and indoor use and has an integral ice trough to keep drinks chilled throughout your meal. It’s the perfect accompaniment to every BBQ, plus it comes with a teak plank to insert over the ice trough, so it won’t get in the way of the Christmas turkey! To create the most inviting al fresco dining table this summer, the HomeShed’s home and garden accessories collection includes a gorgeous range of tableware, glasses, napkins, cushions, lanterns, plant pots and candles. We love their stylish planters and the super cute window box size planter which you can use for herbs

on your windowsill or outside for flowers. Whether you are furnishing and accessorising your home or garden, the HomeShed’s expansive 21,000sqft showrooms include a range of classic to contemporary furniture that is cleverly categorised into the CarpetShed; offering a vast selection of luxury wool carpets, rugs and seagrass from prestige brands and glossy wood flooring, vinyl and ceramic tiles; the LivingShed, showcasing luxurious leather and fabric sofas, dining furniture, curtains, blinds and lighting, and naturally the BedShed, with beds, bedframes and mattresses to tempt every budget and the GardenShed with a fabulous range of rattan garden furniture and accessories.

With less than 100 steps from the Departure Lounge to the plane, start your travels, be it for business or pleasure, with less hassle and more convenience

ometimes, a holiday can be more stress than you originally intended. No sooner than your money vacates your account, the search for the elusive passport begins, you must must must buy a new holiday wardrobe (don’t deny it, we’ve all been there). And squeezing what seems like a mile long check list into your suitcase keeps you occupied for about three weeks before you give up and you decide to just wing it. As you can tell, the whole run-up-to-travel thing isn’t exactly my forte. As a lover of all things that wash away doubt and smooth down worry lines, I was intrigued to explore the option of travelling from Newquay Cornwall Airport. The terminal itself is just a short walk from the car park, so no awkwardly dragging my luggage on and off a coach and thus avoiding giving anyone

concussion as I board – which is always good. Like many of my fellow travellers I get overwhelmed with the desire to arrive at an airport far too early. And rather than sit there and twiddle my thumbs for two – three hours, the first stop at the airport was to the Coffee Republic Café for a freshly made coffee with a caramel shot and snack. It’s much like any café you would walk into on the high street and is a great place to just pass the time or get yourself organised. Personally, I spent my time there mulling over everything that I’ve possibly forgotten and checking my itinerary about eight times, as you do. The relatively compact size of the airport terminal gives you time to sit and ponder or get up and stretch your legs (you can even see the sea in the horizon when sitting outside on the public benches). I meander around for a bit without the worry that I would have to trek half a mile to go through security and

reach the boarding gate, which makes the experience far more leisurely. I also find out you can browse the net on the free wifi and do a spot of shopping in their gift shop (in the Departure Lounge), which sells a selection of Cornish merchandise, so I can take a little bit of Cornwall with me. Before I know it, it’s time to board and I walk out on the tarmac and board the plane, thinking how stress free this entire experience has been so far and how friendly the airport staff have been. As I hop off the plane at Gatwick only one hour later, I’m left thinking why haven’t I flown to the capital more often especially as I can go up and return all in the same day. This starts me thinking and so I check Newquay Cornwall Airport’s route map, I can’t help but smile when I see that they fly to Edinburgh – an old university friend who lives there has been asking me to visit for ages. I make a mental note to start planning more trips on my return… the flight is under an hour and a half, that definitely sounds better than a 12 hour plus journey in my cherished but slightly worn out car. As I head for Gatwick’s South Terminal, with a spring in my step I start looking out for my holiday companion who I’m meeting... this has been so easy and now comes the hard part, sitting back with a cocktail in one hand and my book in the other on a sandy beach for the next 10 days.

Interior tips If you’re looking to do a little DIY makeover in your home, finding a colour & pattern scheme that works can really make a professional finish. Cotton Mills have all we need to know, so be brave, and get it right! ABOVE Blue Mint and Coral Mood Board. BELOW Every designers essential guide ‘the colour wheel’

M

any of us struggle to put a colour scheme together. Or are so fearful of getting it wrong or choosing a pattern that we will tire of in two years’ time, that we end up sticking to an uninteresting palette. Do build your scheme by using a pattern, stripe and plains. Simple patterns can also be incorporated like a selfpatterned or small regular design. Don’t put pattern on pattern. A crime worse than double denim! There are a few styles in which this works, but usually patterns will fight, try to choose patterns that share a shape. Combining geometric patterns can be very dramatic in a 1920’s inspired scheme, or layering toiles and dainty florals can offer a classic country look. Do use three colours in your scheme. 60% main colour, 30% secondary colour, and your “accent” should be just that, and come in at around 10%. When choosing an accent, try to pick a contrast to your main colour, so either directly

opposite on the colour wheel, or to either side of the opposite. Over the past few years we have seen a lot more stunning schemes built around monochromatic design featuring many different tones of the same colour, occasionally with an accent. And who doesn’t love that fresh indigo and white that’s dominated 2014? Equally, if you enjoy a folk art theme, or layered pastels more colours can add warmth and richness. Don’t use matching curtain fabric and wallpaper. This is a controversial one, but often using a wallpaper that compliments your curtain material without being exactly the same will give you a much more satisfying and less contrived result. If you do want to use the same pattern, it often works really well to use the reverse colourway to give you contrast.

A room with a view

Elegant, welcoming, intimate and very, very comfortable. Last month we highlighted the great food on offer at The Bay Restaurant at the Hotel Penzance; so we thought we’d take a look at the wonderful Hotel.

W

BELOW Afternoon tea at The Bay restaurant

ith four stars and magnificent views across the harbour and Mount’s Bay, Hotel Penzance is a beautiful Edwardian townhouse located towards the Eastern edge of Penzance. The hotel has been decorated in a style sympathetic to the lovely period features but with an assured touch which adds to the charm. Furniture and fittings have been carefully sourced to enhance the townhouse chic, smart yet comfortable as exemplified by the leather armchairs scattered around the various sitting rooms. Beds, so crucial to a hotel and so often overlooked, are wonderfully comfy with gorgeous Egyptian cotton linen, there is a slight danger of oversleeping, a joyous thing except you might miss a superlative Cornish breakfast. At first glance the one area the Edwardian gives way to a more modern sensibility is the in The Bay restaurant which utilizes as much glass as possible to maximise the view. Looking round though, one understands that even this modernity has roots in the art deco period so it feels perfectly in keeping. The dining room, with the decked terrace beyond and the sea

shimmering in the distance, has something of the feel of a grand ocean liner and is certainly a spectacular place for lunch, high tea (a Bay speciality) or dinner. To coincide with the appointment of new Head Chef, Bruce Rennie, The Bay Brasserie has just launched, with bold modern British fine dining including, as you might expect just a couple of miles from Newlyn, a strong representation of fish and seafood. For a real treat The Bay is one of the few places in Cornwall it is possible to get a classic platter of Fruits de Mer, a culinary triumph particularly when accompanied by a Chassagne Montrachet Villages or, for contrast, Camel Valley’s award winning Bacchus. Penzance is a town which, once visited, tends to draw you back time and again; the same applies to the rather marvellous Hotel which bears the town’s name.

Wish You Were Here

Treat your senses and your soul to a stay in glorious St Ives. It really does refresh the parts other places cannot reach!

T

hose who travel to St Ives never want to leave. From St Ia, who arrived from Ireland in the 5th century, to the artists who created their own enclave around the town in the 1930s onwards, to the holidaymakers who return year after year, everyone soon falls under its spell. The award-winning seaside town is a place where charming cobbled streets radiate from the sandy-bottomed harbour. Wander round the many galleries, shops and restaurants, take in the breath-taking coastal scenery; sink your toes in golden sand and swim in shimmering blue sea. After just a few hours, you’ll understand why the magnificent landscape and quality of light drew artists including Turner, Whistler, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson. This year, the St Ives September Festival is happening from the 13th to the 27th of September, and will host at least 200 art and music events that will appeal to all ages and interests. It famously once featured a young Nigel Kennedy. Tempted? Then the only thing left is to find excellent-quality accommodation. Powells Cottage Holidays have been in the business for more than 45 years and so are specialists at finding the right property for their guests. Among their superb selection is Beach Haven, a two-bedroom

cottage that can sleep five people; its stylish, modern interior looks out onto pictureperfect Porthmeor Beach – in fact the master bedroom has views of the sea, the Island and Godrevy Lighthouse. There’s a courtyard to relax in as well as a garden and patio that provides the ideal vantage point for spectacular sunsets. Not far away is Xenon, a lovely two-bedroom apartment with a balcony and views of Carbis Bay and St Ives Bay. The toughest choice each day will be whether to kick-back on the great swathe of sand that is Carbis Bay beach, a Blue Flag holder; take a short wander along the gorgeous coastal path to St Ives or visit one of the many local attractions. After all, you’re not far from the Minack Theatre, Lands End and the little village of Zennor, home to the Tinners Arms. If you haven’t been already, come and discover this little piece of heaven for yourselves soon. And if you have been before, you know it’s way past time to return... it’s not called the ‘Gem of Cornwall’ for nothing!

Into The Deep Blue Yonder

Blue Waters couldn’t be a more apt name for this lovely holiday home. From the balcony, the lounge/dining area and the kitchen you can take in the fantastic views over the Camel Estuary and across to Rock and Daymer Bay. The interior of Blue Waters has more than just a nod to the nautical, decorated in a modern seaside style with everything you could wish for in a coastal retreat. It is in an ideal position for exploring Padstow and the north Cornwall coast. Just a 15 minute walk will take you into the centre of the town should you want to spend the day exploring the harbour and shops or you can take a ferry ride across to Rock. The famous Camel Trail cycle route starts just down the road from Blue Waters, so here you are in an ideal position to get out on a bike and explore. If relaxing is more your thing then why not sit out on the balcony with your binoculars in hand and just watch the world go by! www.harbourholidays.co.uk www.padstow-self-catering.co.uk 01841 533402

eather, her husband Steve, and Heather’s parents Kath and Alan were full of smiles when we went to visit them at gorgeous Penrose Holiday Park. Heather was quick to explain, “We all shared a long-held dream of moving to Cornwall, so in 2007 we took the plunge. We sold up our homes and businesses in the Wirral, bought Penrose and moved, literally in convoy, down to Cornwall!” And they’ve been welcoming delighted visitors like us ever since. CAMPING AND CARAVANNING With a hundred large, spacious pitches and modern, well maintained facilities, the park is understandably popular for touring caravans and campers. Heather shows us family rooms with baby changing, showers, basin and a loo,

and a brilliant campers’ kitchen equipped with fridge freezer, microwave and bottle warmer, all free of charge. “Renewing this was our first job when we got here in 2007,” says Steve, as he shows off the impeccable heated shower and toilet block with free hot water.

HOLIDAY HOMES “In 2008 we started developing our West Lawn,” says Heather. “We had planning permission for 18 holiday homes but chose to site only 15 to give customers a generous plot and promote a more luxurious and unique holiday experience.” The holiday homes here are spread out - no military rows or squashing them in - and attention to detail is key. Gas and electric is piped so there are no unsightly bottles and homes are skirted to hide unsightly legs and pipework. This winter a further eight plots were added, six of which are still available to buy or rent. There are also plots available for holiday homes of your choice and lodges and homes to view. Owners can choose from a 10 or 11 month season each year and your plot is your plot for the duration of your 15 year contract.

A Browsers

Paradise

The days when whole families in every cottage in Mevagissey were engaged in processing huge catches of Pilchards may be long gone, but the spirit of it still remains.

T

All images courtesy of: Bazz Cooper

he fishermen’s cottages are still there, many hung with symbols of times past like old anchors and ships wheels among the window boxes and hanging baskets, their names reminiscent of the past. Mevagissey is a working fishing village, to this day trawlers large and small ply their trade in this important little harbour. The village boasts a labyrinth of lanes and browsing the many independently owned shops and the incredibly accessible harbour side is fascinating. Nautilus couldn’t be better placed, just a few steps from the harbour on Middle Wharf, and nothing quite prepares you for what’s inside! The shop embodies the spirit of Mevagissey, and retains the atmosphere of authentic Cornwall with its high beamed ceiling designed for nets to hang to dry. The store itself is perfect if you’re looking for something different as a gift or a well-deserved self-indulgence. That’s not to say that Nautilus is only a gift shop! It might just be the interior specialist you’re looking for to create a traditional coastal living style for your home or business. There’s a rich selection of authentic marine antiques to invoke just

the right ship-shape atmosphere that’s so on trend for an eclectic mix of modern and old, as well as the extraordinary collection of eccentric new items like huge tin whales, or carved wooden figureheads. You’ll find old blocks and pulleys, old anchors, ships wheels, compasses and telescopes, chronometers or barometers they have it all. Always in stock at the store, are a large selection of original ships lamps and lanterns, which along with everything else make this a real treasure trove. It’s almost as though hundreds of years of Cornwall’s treasure has been hidden away for all this time in a little fisherman’s loft in Middle Wharf. You can find the shop in the lane between The Wheel House and Quay West from the harbour side, or from Fore Street turn left to the harbour in front of The Kings Arms.

All you should need

Taking the steps to renovating can be tough. With all the different trades you need it would be handy if you can find them all in one place, right? Well we’ve got some good news...

MAIN If your moving house, Ocean Services can help RIGHT Ocean’s multi-skilled workforce

U

K consumers spend around £27 billion every year on home improvements. A year ago, Ocean Services based in St. Austell, entered this market and launched its ‘At Home’ brand to bring the same experience and expertise which was previously only available to public sector clients, to private home owners, landlords and tenants throughout Cornwall. From the householder’s perspective, the huge advantage of using Ocean for any property maintenance works is the range of trades covered through a single point of contact. For instance, a kitchen refurbishment requires carpenters, plumbers, electricians, tilers and possibly many other trades to complete the job. Ocean has all of these skills within its own direct labour force. Customers today are naturally very price sensitive but, over and above cost, the main complaints from householders engaging building contractors is about missed appointments, delayed works and unsatisfactory work. Ocean’s multi-skilled workforce is able to complete works from start to finish, eliminating delays commonly caused by having to wait for the various trades to work together and every project is overseen by experienced supervisors

every step of the way to ensure all work is completed on time and within budget. This approach has been shown to work to good effect with the recent renovation of a property at Crinnis Wood. Ocean acquired the property which required extensive modernisation: rewiring, new heating system, new kitchens and bathrooms and a large extension. Once the renovation was complete the magnificent home was resold and the new owners are very pleased with the standard of workmanship Ocean is now looking for its next throughout. project, so get in touch with the New owner Simon company on 01726 874 488 if you would like a quote for extern Jones said, “I am al or internal refurbishment or if you delighted with the know of a good val ue property requiring works that Ocean has renovation work which is for sale . carried out and we are really pleased with our new purchase.”

arol Klimek who began his career in gemmology back in 1962 with an extensive apprenticeship at Cornells of Maidstone, decided to take the business to Cornwall, his wife Bettina’s place of birth, so that they could raise their family in this beautiful county. Karol’s career has spanned the globe from experience in the well known company of Mappin & Webb in London to appointments with the Sultan of Brunei at his palace to show him the best gemstones and jewellery the world has to offer. Bettina qualified as a gemmologist in 1986 and has continued to build up the business in Truro while Karol was

opening up a manufacturing jewellery business in Napier New Zealand. They both put a lot of importance on product knowledge and insist on offering training to all their staff to a high level. Nicola McKeown, like Karol and Bettina, is a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain and is studying GIA Pearl which is a qualification already achieved by Bettina and Kayleigh Radcliffe. Kayleigh has also won a scholarship to study the Gemological Institute of America’s prestigious Gemmology course which she is tackling now along with her full time position as Assistant Manager. They also sell diamonds and gemstones of a high quality, often selecting their gemstones and pearls as they travel back and forth between the UK and New Zealand and designing unique pieces with their fine stones. The shop’s highly qualified, friendly and approachable team can advise, help design bespoke pieces and also undertake quality repairs along with valuing and pearl re-stringing. They can supply wedding rings and other jewellery, bridesmaid’s gifts, gents’ jewellery, silver jewellery and silver, silver plated and pewter gifts. his July, Nursefinders celebrates 16 years of changing lives in Cornwall. Since it was founded in 1998 at the family home of the founder and current director, Chris Birch, when it employed just four members of staff, it has made a huge mark on the county’s health and social care sector. Now based in Truro’s Lemon Street, the agency currently employs more than 120 people and is seeking to recruit another 30. Birch tells us, “In the early days we made a strategic decision to commit to offering a genuine, quality care service exclusively to those in need in Cornwall, and we remain committed to that philosophy today, continuing to deliver our services solely within our wonderful county.” The wealth of ability and professionalism of the staff on Nursfinders’ books includes registered nurses and healthcare assistants as well as support staff, who all need to have worked in care for six months before they can apply. Placements range from nursing and residential homes, NHS hospitals, hospices, supported-living residences and rehabilitation centres, and in line with the agency’s mission to promote independence and dignity, packages are also tailor-made to enable clients to continue living at home. There are even short-term options for holidaymakers who need extra help.

Another of the organisation’s policies is that it is just as important to take care of their staff, too, and so cover the costs for their training and continual professional development, and include holiday pay in their benefits. Large financial investment in the form of a refurbishment of their offices and training suites was also recently undertaken – “Not only to accommodate our expanding workforce, but to enable us to enhance the quality of the business,” says the agency’s manager, May Coogan. The independent regulator Care Quality Commission obviously agree – Nursefinders attained the highest standards of care in the CQC’s unannounced inspection last year, something all staff are rightly proud of. “It is our sincere belief that we do employ the best local people, who provide the very best local care, and that is why our company is going from strength to strength,” continues Coogan. “It has been a genuine privilege to work with and serve the people of Cornwall, and we plan on delivering services to this beautiful county for many years to come.”

Walk the South West Coast Path on the

Roseland Peninsula St Anthony Head and Place ABOVE RIGHT Place House on St Anthony’s Head. (Photographer - Ray Culmer) BELOW RIGHT The majesty of Nare Head taken from the sky (Courtesy of Visit Cornwall)

Start and finish - Place Ferry Landing Stage or St Anthony’s Head Car Park (TR2 5EZ) This walk has magnificent views as well as plenty of historical and wildlife interest to enjoy along the way. There’s also a hidden beach to discover at Porthbeor.

Distance - 4½ miles 3. Return the way you came to rejoin the Coast Path. The walk to and around Zone Point will start to open up views of Nare Head and Dodman Point away to the east.

1. From the landing stage, walk up the lane past Place House.

4. As you pass Porthbeor beach (which can be reached by a steeply stepped path), take the short link path to the road. Turn right and then left to go through the tiny hamlet of Bohortha. Ignore the path going off to the right and continue straight on to return to the bottom of the lane near Place House and the ferry landing stage.

2. The Coast Path turns right off the lane and goes to St Anthony Church before wending its way past Cellars Beach and along the edge of the fields to Carricknath Point. A little further on, the twin sandy beaches of Great and Little Molunan provide an ideal stopping or picnic spot before beginning the steep ascent to St Anthony Head.

5. Finally you reach the open sweep of Towan Beach, and about half way along a bridle path to the left will take you the 200 metres to the road near Porth Farm. Turn right and follow it for a short distance to a footpath on the left hand side – this will take you around the edge of Porth Creek and back to the ferry.

Travel - Visit the Fal Riverlinks website for details of ferry services from Falmouth and Feock. St Mawes can also be reached by bus from Truro.
