s we say goodbye to the short days of winter, spring has certainly sprung here in Cornwall. This is one of my favourite times of year as spring flowers decorate the duchy and the sun starts to warm the soil and our souls. What better time to escape the city for a Cornish break, or to plan one for later in the year. To help, turn to our selection of coastal and countryside retreats (from page 46). ere, you’ll find boutique hotels, luxury lodges and cosy cottages – something for everyone. If you’re looking for a more permanent change of pace and lifestyle then Savills have some exquisite homes on the market to help make your dream of a life by the sea become a reality (from page 19). Once you’ve found your coastal home then why not turn to page 37 where you’ll find inspiration from our interior experts. This month’s cover feature sees Dan out and about experiencing Cornwall’s great outdoor action. Both on the water and on land, there is a great selection of activities to enjoy, all with the backdrop of some amazing scenery. If you’re after something a little more leisurely then we have some great attractions to visit and places to shop. And don’t forget to enter our ‘win it all’ competition on page 43. This is your chance to win over £7,000 worth of fabulous prizes – wow!

rom simply lacing up your boots and hitting the coast path, to donning a life jacket and heading out on the water, there’s plenty to keep you active in the outdoors across the Duchy. In this issue, we explore the many and varied ways that you can make the most of your time in Cornwall, whether you’re planning a trip, or you live here and are searching for new ways to enjoy the weekends. If hitting the water is your idea of an outdoor adventure, then you’re in the right county. There’s a whole array of activities to get stuck into across Cornwall, whether it’s learning surf, or heading out on a charter and catching your own supper. The Hoxton Special (www. thehoxtonspecial.com) for instance, on Marazion Beach, is a watersports centre with fantastic facilities, offering SUP hire and instruction, kayak hire, and supervised kitesurfing instruction, as well as other health and fitness classes. Angus tells us: “We refer to ourselves as a ‘blue gym’, which basically means that we’re a community interest company that utilises our natural surroundings to enhance health and wellbeing.” Perhaps you want to delve beneath the surface and see what lives under the waves. If so, Kennack Diving (www.kennackdiving. co.uk) on the Lizard offers diving trips for all levels. Owners David and Des can arrange bespoke dives, which have become extremely popular thanks to the pair’s intimate knowledge of the local waters. Divers as young as 12 can take part and what’s more, if you fancy gaining a specialist dive qualification, avid and es are fully qualified to guide you through it.

RIGHT Gear up for SUP with Ann’s Cottage!

One activity that’s really taken off in recent years is SUP (stand-up paddle boarding). With roots in awaii, S P derives from surfing, but requires a rider to stand or kneel on the board and use a paddle to move. It’s also evolved into a much more leisurely pursuit, particularly on calmer days, making it perfect for gently traversing the hidden coves and inlets along Cornwall’s craggy coastline, exploring areas that are simply inaccessible from land. Why not give SUP a go on the Lizard peninsula? Home to the UK’s most southerly point, here you’ll also find i ard Adventure (www.lizardadventure.co.uk). Working with the National Trust and supporting Surfers Against Sewage (co-founder Annette is a regional SAS rep), i ard Adventure offers adventure days on the water with the environment in mind. You can enjoy activities that include kayaking and coasteering, as well as SUP sessions, which sometimes result in encounters with rare and endangered species like seals and basking sharks. Perhaps this is your idea of fun but you don’t want to waste time travelling there from your north Cornish retreat. If so, get in touch with Cornish Rock Tors (www.cornishrocktors.com). Based in Port Gaverne and offering a wealth of activities including coasteering, sea kayaking and SUP, Cornish Rock Tors has the added benefit of an all-weather venue, Tregildrans Quarry – a freshwater lake set in a quiet wooded valley, perfect for when the weather is less forgiving.

DISCOVER MORE EXPERIENCE Adventure shouldn’t just be for people. If you’re in Cornwall with a furry friend in tow, there are endless miles of dog-friendly trails and beaches to be explored. Look out for our spring issue of Dogs Love Cornwall Living to find out more! We also recommend checking out www.love-kernow.co.uk, a fantastic insight into the life of a Cornish dog owner making the most of the Duchy.

If your old gear is in woeful need of replacing, Ann’s Cottage surf and lifestyle stores (www.annscottage.com) have everything you need to gear up and get out there, also stocking the world leading inflatable SUP supplier Red Paddle, a company that believes riding an inflatable shouldn’t mean compromising on quality.

Camel Ski School

Of course, for some, SUP doesn’t offer the ‘rush’ factor that gives outdoor adventure the edge they’re looking for. If this sounds like you, then head to Camel Ski School in Rock (www.camelskischool.com), where you’ll find water-based fun for the whole family (see page 27). In addition to teaching waterskiing and wakeboarding for all levels, the team, headed up by Charlie Toogood, offers a host of fun inflatable rides, including the banana boat, ringos and the ‘sofa’. Charlie tells us: “We also offer wakesurfing, an addictive and exhilarating combination of surfing and wakeboarding. Basically it’s like surfing an endless wave, and it’s a huge amount of fun!” For those of you just visiting Cornwall, we couldn’t blame you for wanting to indulge your adventurous side without having to leave your resort. After all, holidays should be easy, right? Fortunately, as Stuart Beveridge from Retallack Resort and Spa (www.retallackresort.co.uk) tells us: “If you’re looking for an action-packed day out then our famous inflatable Aqua Park or unique FlowRider are for you. We’re based

You’ll also find action aplenty at Kernow Adventure Park (www. kernowadventurepark.com) on its impressive inflatable aqua park. The park includes slippery slides, floating trampolines, air bags, climbing frames and more, all of which is connected by floating walkways. To find out more and learn about our exclusive readers’ discount, turn to page 26. Finally, if you simply want to get outside and see the rugged Cornish coast without getting [too] wet, there’re no better views than those enjoyed from the water. And what could be better than catching your own supper? Anglo Dawn (www.anglodawn.com) offers half and full days out on the water from Falmouth, offering both scheduled outings and private charters. Skipper Andy, who recently bought the business, knows the local waters like the back of his hand, so whether you fancy a spot of wildlife watching or an afternoon’s serious angling, he’s the man to ask.

For those who’d rather stay dry, we have the two-wheeled approach. Linking the towns of Padstow, Wadebridge, Wenfordbridge and Bodmin through 18 miles of Cornish countryside, the Camel Trail also leads you along a disused railway and the Camel estuary – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that proffers both stunning views and occasional sightings of some of Cornwall’s incredible (and often rare) wildlife. It’s a highlight for residents all across the Duchy, as well as thousands of visitors every year, and even if your trusty bike has found itself resigned to a rusty shed corner, worry not! You can hire bikes from Bridge Bike Hire in Wadebridge at the start of the trail (www. bridgebikehire.co.uk). Whatever you need – be it special needs bikes with wheelchairs, trailers for dogs, child seats, balance bikes, or mountain bikes – Bridge Bike Hire has you covered, also offering super-comfort hybrid bikes for adults. And if you are planning on bringing the dogs, they’ll be pleased to hear that dog trailers come complete with a bowl and water! Another of our favourite trails is the coastto-coast mineral tramway, a trail that winds for 11 miles from Bissoe to Devoran. Although hilly in parts, this route is well worth the effort, with highlights including the day-glo mud banks bordering the Carnon River, and Poldice valley – once a site of copper

ore extraction. Take it all in from the saddle with hire bikes from Go ByCycle (www. cornwallbikehire.co.uk). Offering high quality bike hire and promoting a healthy lifestyle, the Go ByCycle team has everything you could possibly need, from British-made steel and carbon road bikes and German electric touring bikes, to family steeds of all kinds. What’s more, they can deliver your rentals straight to your accommodation, to the train station, or even to the airport, meaning you can hit the trails as soon as you arrive! But cycling isn’t just for days out. In fact, for the team at Triathlon Store (www. triathlonstore.co.uk), it makes up but a third of what they specialise in. Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, especially here in Cornwall, but it demands a great deal of both your fitness and gear. Thankfully, Triathlon Store stocks everything you need to take on such a challenge, whether you’re just starting out, or are well seasoned and looking to upgrade your gear. Even if you’re just looking for good, solid equipment for your swimming, cycling or running regime, you won’t go wrong with friendly advice from the triathlon experts (see page 31). Well there you go! We’ve covered a lot of ground over the last few pages, and now we’re certain you will too. Isn’t it time you unleashed your inner adventurer?

LIZARD LUXURY… With the help of the property experts from Savills, we explore England’s most southerly point.

I

n the south of Cornwall lies a place of true rural beauty. The Lizard (likely from the Cornish ‘Lys Ardh’, meaning ‘high court’) peninsula, on which can be found mainland Britain’s most southerly point, is characterised by towering serpentine cliffs, magnificent beaches, pretty fishing villages and a wild heathland interior. Much of the coastline is protected by the National Trust, while the surrounding countryside is classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is an area of international botanical importance, where the microclimate allows 600 species of flowering plants, nearly a quarter of all species, to thrive. Two properties, one in a rural setting and one perched high above the waters of Lizard Point, are currently on the market with Savills. Roskruge Barton Cottage is a three bedroom, picture-perfect cottage, situated in an idyllic location just outside the village of Manaccan and just a mile from the waters of the Helford River (guide price £425,000). It has been sympathetically renovated and

provides characterful living throughout. The bespoke cottage kitchen has wonderful views across the gardens to the meadow behind the house, while the open plan sitting and dining room is bright and with doors to the front and rear gardens. ynance Bay ouse, in i ard village, is a highly versatile and handsome Victorian property, with two attached annexes and is set in around an acre of gardens (guide price £1,000,000). The views are outstanding, overlooking the coastline and the surrounding countryside. The house retains many original features, with five bedrooms and three reception rooms, including a sunroom with uninterrupted coastal views. The two annexes are both dual aspect and have raised decking areas with sea views.

he stunning settlement that is Melody Farm, is your chance to own a real piece of Cornish history with its first recorded ownership dating back to 1565. The current main house was rebuilt at the turn of the 21st Century taking full advantage of its south facing position and glorious views, and is now a beautifully renovated country home. The large family kitchen/dining room opens into the conservatory and in turn leads out onto the upper terrace and lawns. There are five bedrooms, including a master and a guest suite.

The surrounding farmland, fields and meadows, known as The Emerald, were owned in pre-Victorian times by a small number of Cornish families and have since been transformed into the formal subtropical gardens and lake we see today. There are six further properties, all of which have been built to an exceptionally high standard and have unique sustainable credentials. Eco features include sedum roofs, air source heat pumps, rainwater capture, earth wool insulation, thermal water panels and photovoltaic panels for electricity.

To round it off, there is a gym, swimming pool, hot tubs at four of the houses, a tennis court and a children’s play area, and Melody Farm is also a licensed wedding venue.

Cornwall’s unique quality comes from its historic landscape and spectacular coastline. Long sandy beaches, sheltered anchorages and rugged cliffs combine to produce what is now one of Europe’s most exciting and fashionable playgrounds. At Melody Farm, you are tucked away, yet just four miles from the city of Truro with its range of shops and amenities, main line rail link to London Paddington and a number of both state and private schools. t’s no secret that Cornwall is full of hidden gems, yet finding them can be tricky. ne such treasure that we recently unearthed is ernow Adventure Park. estled in a beautiful reclaimed quarry near Falmouth, you’ll find an epic adventure for every member of the family. Founded in 2 as a stand-alone wake boarding park, ernow Adventure Park opened its doors with two aims to provide high-standard watersports, and to nurture a community. ver the years, founder Alex’s vision has remained the same, but the park has gone through some dramatic transformations and this year, the new season which starts on st ay is set to be the biggest and best yet The impressive Aqua Park includes slippery slides, floating trampolines, air bags, climbing frames and much more, all connected by floating walk ways. With one highly-qualified instructor per ten participants, the team is able to provide an interesting and entertaining session for everybody involved. The best part is that the activities are accessible to all, making the park a real destination day out. Speaking to Alex about the upcoming season, he tells us Being accessible to everyone and allowing them the opportunity to practice safe watersports and gain the benefits of exercising outdoors is all part of our ernow culture’. This year we’ve made real changes to the park, ensuring that every element of our business

truly reflects our values.” As part of these changes, Alex and co have taken customer feedback seriously and are expanding the park, reflecting the needs of their customers. Recently, they invested in a fleet of stand-up paddleboards, in both regular and giant si ed, and are now able to fit eight people on boards at any one time. This fun and often hilarious activity is perfect for family bonding, events and parties. Finally, as every action-packed day out inevitably requires sustenance, ernow Adventure Park is set to take on an external company to manage the on-site bar and restaurant, providing tasty treats and much-needed nourishment after a busy day playing on the water. With a man-made golden beach, its sheltered suntrap location and silky Cornish freshwater lake, ernow Adventure Park is the perfect safe environment for a family day out this summer.

Get ready for the 2018 Cornish Tri season with Triathlon Store!

W

ith triathlon still being one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, many people are thinking of dipping their toes in the water and having a go at their first ever triathlon. So, what gear do you need in order to complete your first triathlon in comfort? r, if you’re already a seasoned triathlete, what do you need to help make the incremental gains in performance?

Swim Many events are pool based so you could get away with just a normal swimming costume, however a triathlon suit is a much better option as it can be worn for the entire race, also giving you more comfort on the bike due to a small cycling pad. For open water events you may well need a swimming wetsuit. These differ greatly from a normal surfing style suit as they are designed to help with buoyancy and body positioning in the water. ntry level suits start from approximately £150, and the more you spend the more technical features you will get, such as extra flexibility, reversed or break away ippers, and so on.

Cycle For a first triathlon many people dust off the bikes from the shed and just give it a go, and it’s not unheard of for mountain bikes to be used, although obviously this does make for much harder work. A decent road bike is a good starting point and Triathlon Store can help you prepare it for maximum performance. You can also look at accessorising for extra speed, perhaps with some aero bars added to help in streamlining your ride. For those looking to advance further then a fully spec’d triathlon bike is the way to go.

Run

MAIN BELOW Get kitted out for triathlon season to enhance your performance

The starting point is a decent pair of running shoes which will give you the support, comfort and cushioning for the full distance of the run as well as during training. The elite may opt for ultra lightweight race shoes. With races often won and lost during transition elastic laces and race belts are a must helping to speed you on your way to the finish line.

ith a home furniture store showcasing stylish and unique furniture pieces, and another packed full of fantastic lifestyle accessories for your home, neeka in Truro firmly believes in supporting the local community, forming great and long-lasting relationships with suppliers throughout the south west. Team member ess Preen walks us through some current trends in the ever-changing world of interior design, explaining how you can stay up to date with Uneeka. We predicted last autumn that brass touches and velvet luxury would begin making an appearance in the interior markets, and that couldn’t be more true.” n achieving the latest look to suit your personal taste, she explains that there are plenty of options, whether you choose to go all out with a velvet sofa, or add subtle hints with cushions and throws. n terms of colour, while autumn brought pastel shades, “we’re set to see a shift towards slightly brighter colours and richer tones now we edge closer to spring. With Pantone’s 2 8 colour of the year being ltra iolet, we’re expecting a year of vibrancy and interesting textures.”

Part of the neeka home furniture range, the stunning three-seat Shrewsbury sofa impresses in a vibrant velvety shade of peacock blue, though there are many more choices available, including a warm neutral oatmeal. With our made to order service, you can choose from a huge range of fabrics in a variety of textures and colours to get the perfect sofa for you. And, if size is an issue, then a two-seater option is also available in most of our range.” And it doesn’t stop there! There’s also a fantastic range of chairs to choose from, from large to small bedroom to sitting room dark and light legs, meaning that realising your own interior vision is made easy at neeka. The best part, according to ess, is that you don’t have to worry about spending a lot of money on a home makeover. ven the simplest of touches can go a long way. ntroducing hints of colour, velvety touches or a statement brass clock can all keep your home looking on trend.”

BRIGHT IDEAS Designer Jo Downs launches her new Chandelier lighting collection.

I

n February, Jo Downs unveiled brand new work at the cutting edge of contemporary glass design with the launch of her spectacular new Chandelier lighting collection. The Launceston studio and gallery now showcases a wealth of uniquely beautiful, handcrafted new works that represent the next step in the complex field of fusedglass design. From her trademark ocean-inspired motifs, to geometrically inspired designs, these collections update the classic concept of the chandelier for the 21st Century interior design market. The launch also marked the beginning of a new creative partnership between Jo Downs Handmade

Glass and design company Northern Lights, which has been creating inspiring lighting solutions since 1987 and has worked with Jo to create integrated lighting for her new range of chandeliers. Collections include elegant pieces inspired by nature, like her oceanic ‘Piscis Waterfall’ design, or cloud-inspired ‘Camella Altocumulus’ chandelier, as well as more dramatic, abstract pieces like her stunning ‘Tabella Aetatis’ rectangular chandelier, designed as a statement dining or conference table piece. Alongside these are new collections of wall mounted arc and panel lighting, such as her richly textured ‘Seascape’ wall lights, and panel lighting in Jo’s iconic ‘Beach’ palette of rainbow colours. Visitors to the Launceston gallery can get inspired, discuss design options with Jo’s friendly team, and explore each of the new collections, all of which are available as part of Jo’s new custom design service, Jo Downs Architectural Glass. So, if you’re a lover of Jo’s work, or you want to round off your contemporary décor with spectacular, cutting edge lighting, be sure to visit Jo Downs Glass Design in Launceston!

Jo Eldridge, founder of Jo & Co, reflects on her first three years in business and how her store has become a go-to destination in Cornwall.

é ABOVE Jo’s store has become a mecca for anyone updating their interior

INSET Jo Eldridge, founder of Jo & Co

When did you open your shop and what kind of store is it? “I opened the store in December 2014. I always planned to open a lifestyle store, but to start with, I wanted to just play it safe by selling a few interior pieces. Once I knew our market, we began to expand our collections. Now we sell a great mix of things I love, whether it’s homeware, beauty, womenswear, gifts, even upholstered furniture. “We have some lovely customers that return to us again and again for a particular brand, such as Wanderlust Life or Neom, but in general I think people come to us for a good browse, and just for the experience of being here.” Why did you open a store? “It’s always been my dream to have a store, but I never really thought it was possible. Then, when I was six months pregnant, the opportunity came up at the awksfield site, and it suddenly got me thinking. Although it wasn’t the best timing, my husband said ‘Go for it’, and we’ve never looked back. I took early maternity leave from my job, and started to plan.” Jo also designed the store. She explains: “My husband Tom is a great carpenter, so between us (along with a few builders and electricians) we managed to turn an industrial building into what it is today.”

What makes Jo & Co unique? “Everything! We really are different, and we’re always evolving and changing. I think that’s why people keep coming back. There’s always something different from week to week. In terms of what inspires me, I’m loving the beach vibe at the moment, but that’s probably because it’s winter and I’m desperate for some sun!” What have you learnt in the past three years? “Oh my, a huge amount. I was so naive in the early days. I have my business head on much more now. I’ve also had to teach myself how to switch off. On Fridays I try to shut down my computer and forget about everything until the next week. It’s important that my family has my full attention without the distraction of emails.” What’s next for Jo&Co? “Well, after a very successful year of selling our furniture, we are excited to announce that we’ll be opening a furniture showroom this spring. We can’t wait for it to open!”

BELOW Miles of stunning coastline, just waiting to be explored

wner Sally explains: “With increasing standards and so much alternative glamping accommodation provided throughout the British Isles, we felt we needed to bring up the site to the cottage standards and installed the Wigwams®, which are lovely warm camping cabins that sit beautifully in the countryside.” Bodrugan’s history dates back to Domesday, with Bodrugan’s Leap – an outstanding section of the coast path – commemorating Sir Henry de Bodrugan leaping off the cliff with his horse to escape Earl Edgcumbe, after he and his men discovered he’d betrayed the Loyalists during the Civil War. This historic site is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, situated between Gorran Haven and Mevagissey, with the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Caerhayes and the Roseland peninsula all within a few minutes’ drive. There are also some wonderful views for glampers and Sally tells us: “Everyone who stays on our site can’t wait to drink their early morning tea looking over the sea, watching the fishing boats come and go.” Sally and her husband Tim also rear sheep, supplying lamb to Waitrose, and they even have a few Dexter cattle. Their son Robin is beginning to take on more farming responsibilities. Tom

and Daisy, Robin’s siblings both live and work outside of Cornwall, but they love returning as often as they can and bringing their friends down to show the place off! “The best things about this business are talking to people and communicating to them é ABOVE about food provenance, farming and how the BELOW countryside works. There’s so much interest Camp in style in one – our guests love the idea of a farm and like to of the new know more about the way we operate. A big Wigwams® bonus of having people on your land is that you get to learn what happens beyond the Tamar, and it’s vital to keep up with changing viewpoints and to understand what people want from a holiday. “At Bodrugan, they get great views, walking, beaches, comfortable, en-suite glamping cabins with firepits, outdoor furniture and a car-free site small enough for children to be left to explore. If it rains, they can use our heated indoor pool and sauna, and when tired children go to sleep, parents can enjoy a drink on the deck as they watch the ocean.”

he partnership features the best horticultural practices and heritage produce taken from the The Lost Gardens and brilliantly presented by The Idle Rocks. As well as hosting over 300 different varieties of fruit and vegetables, The Heligan Kitchen Garden raises a collection of rare breed livestock, many of which are rarely seen in restaurants. These will be showcased at The Idle Rocks throughout the seasonal menus with a trophy ingredient featured each month, with recipes created by head chef Guy Owen and his team. “It was Cornish produce that fuelled my passion for food,” Guy says, “and this partnership with The Lost Gardens of eligan reflects both mine and the hotel’s ethos of using only the best ingredients.” The partnership has been set up, not only to highlight locally sourced ingredients, but also to act as an example of how local business can work together to showcase its producers and raise the profile of Cornish food. “As a chef, the opportunity to work with the produce from the estate is truly a dream come true,” Guy continues, “their attention to detail, the hard work and stunning array of heritage fruit and vegetables is second to none.” The beautiful gardens were abandoned following World War I but with rigorous

restoration in the 1990s, treasures of the gardens past were unearthed. Spring of 2018 sees the 26th anniversary of the gardens being opened to the public. “We are all extremely excited about joining forces with The Idle Rocks and the relationship going forward,” remarks George Elworthy, Managing Director at The ost ardens of eligan, The dle Rocks’ ethos for sustainability and locally sourcing produce mirrors our own beliefs and the modest manner in which Guy delivers this, is simply awe-inspiring.” Impressively, in January 2016, as a result of the dedication to Cornish food and the committed service to guests, The Idle Rocks became a member of the world renowned Relais and Châteaux collection of hotels. l l a w n C or INVESTING IN

We speak to George at Cornish Traditional cottages about buying a holiday property in Cornwall.

T

"

If you love and keep coming back to the same favourite area, it may make sense to buy your own property

staying in a Cornish holiday home continues to grow. Whether you buy property to create a home from home in Cornwall, or to provide one for paying guests, it’s typically a sound investment. “Cornish homes are not especially expensive. While house prices can fluctuate, if you’re looking for a long-term investment, this is less of a concern. Letting out your home when you aren’t using it can cover the cost of ownership and in many cases actually return a good profit “The Cornish economy thrives on tourism. Visitor attractions large, small and artisan exist and grow across the county. What’s more, access to all parts of the Duchy is being improved, all the time making it easier for tourists to reach the lesser known and often more sought-after spots. Access around Cornwall is improved every year and Cornwall Airport Newquay brings visitors from London, the north as well as Spain, Germany and Ireland.” In other words, where better to invest in a holiday home?

here are many reasons to buy a holiday home in Cornwall, with many choosing to do so as a lifestyle choice. George says: “If you love and keep coming back to the same favourite area, it may make sense to buy your own property. You’ll save on accommodation costs and over time, you’ll be acquiring an asset that could become a valuable nest egg, or even a retirement home!” This leads to another reason for buying a home in Cornwall, which is buying as an investment. Not only are you investing in a happy retirement spent in Cornwall – it can also generate income. But there are some things to consider, such as generating income beyond the basic capital appreciation made simply from owning a property. Two of the most common options include long-term rentals and holiday letting, each with its own pros and cons. Long lets, while earning comparatively less than holiday lets, experience less wear and tear, and you often don’t need to furnish the house or deal with utilities. On the other hand, holiday lets, in comparison, can command more rent per week than a comparative long let would in a month, however more guests usually means more maintenance. “Kernow’s climate, geography, coastline and attractions make it Britain’s number one holiday destination and the demand for

According to Managing Director, Alan Tutte, whilst some consider aspirational vehicles an indulgence, they can in fact also prove a fruitful investment. “We recently helped a client fund a very rare, classic car,” explains Alan. “He was delighted with his purchase, as it fulfilled a childhood dream, but was even more delighted when the vehicle had appreciated in value by some £500,000 less than a year later.”

As a direct lender, Ignition prides itself on its personal and confidential service, and as a result, enjoys long-term relationships with many of its customers. The principal aim is to maximise spending potential whilst minimising repayments. A CLASSIC

t s i w t a h t wi This Easter, the team at Etherington’s Farm Shop have a few ideas to make your seasonal roast extra special.

RIGHT The excellently stocked farm shop near Scorrier

S

pring is upon us and, for those of you who are thinking about menus for springtime dinner parties and evenings spent enjoying quality time over a meal and a glass of wine, lamb may well be on your agenda. New-season lamb, often referred to as ‘spring lamb’ offers a tender sweetness that’s absolutely perfect for Easter roast dinners. The butchers at Etherington’s Farm Shop near Scorrier have, between them, more than 70 years of experience and this Easter, instead of opting for a traditional roast, they’re encouraging Cornish foodies to choose an impressive rack of lamb. Taken from the most-tender part of the animal, it not only looks impressive, but tastes incredible too, especially when cooked pink and eaten off the bone. All you need to do is decide how best to prepare your special Easter dinner. Here are just a few ideas from the team at Etherington’s. If you’re a fuss-free cook, Etherington’s recommend simply brushing the meat with a little oil, seasoning with salt and pepper and searing in a hot pan to lock in the flavour, before roasting in a pre-heated oven at 180°C for 15 to 20 minutes. r, if you enjoy a spot of foodie flair, Etherington’s Scott Buzza suggests adding a herb crust, which will golden in the

oven and add different textures to the dish. amb’s rich flavour means it combines well with vibrant ingredients, from fruit and yoghurt, to pesto, paprika and curry spices. For a fresh taste, Scott explains how you can use breadcrumbs, a good handful of freshly chopped mint, rosemary and two garlic cloves, as well as a dollop of mustard and a pinch of parmesan (all blended) to create the crust paste. Season the lamb and flash fry in a hot skillet on all sides for 30 seconds, before placing in a pre-heated 180°C oven for ten minutes. Remove your lamb from the oven and add your chosen crust to the fattiest side, before returning it to the heat for five to ten minutes. Finally, remove, cover and leave to stand for ten minutes, before serving with dauphinoise potatoes, buttered spring vegetables, a red wine jus and, of course, a hearty glass of Pinot Noir or Châteauneufdu-Pape. The last thing to do is enjoy – we know we will!

alking along the picturesque Porthleven harbour it’s hard to imagine anything rivalling the beauty of the coast. With the earthy tones of the harbour complementing the compelling blues of the sea and the pop of colour from the fishing boats, it is an idyllic place. But then you pause by the shops and find yourself drawn in by one of the window displays with a view to equal the sea. Inside you find an ama ing array of handcrafted silver jewellery and exquisite German-made Junkers and Zeppelin wristwatches. This treasure trove of delicate and unique pieces is known simply as The Jewellery Workshop, and one visit won’t be enough. In May, The Jewellery Workshop celebrates its sixth year of providing locals, and visitors from afar, with captivating and bespoke jewellery. Indeed, while there’s a fantastic selection instore, if you don’t find what you’re looking for then silver and goldsmiths Rachel and Paul can make it for you, ensuring that you leave with something tailored to you. Similarly, if you have an item of jewellery with sentimental value, such as an heirloom, they can remodel it with

contemporary designs. If you enjoy wearing enviable, handmade jewellery why not try your hand at making it yourself, simply pop into the shop and ask! The workshop itself is an unassuming studio nestled on the opposite side of the harbour. They also offer the one-off experience of crafting your own wedding rings. What could be more special than overlooking the beautiful Porthleven harbour whilst making the wedding rings that you will exchange on the day? “We had a fantastic day making each other’s wedding rings, they are even better than we expected. RESCUE AND REHABILITATION After another busy season looking after poorly seal pups, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary offers advice on what to do if you come across one.

ABOVE é The Animal Care Team takes on a whole array of different characters INSET One of the pups currently residing at the Gweek sanctuary

IF IN DOUBT

If you spot a seal pup that you think may need help, call the Cornish Seal Sanctuary on 01326 221361

S

eals, including pups, will haul out onto the beach for periods of time to rest and sleep, making it quite normal behaviour, however sometimes they do need our help. So what should you do if you see a seal or seal pup and you’re concerned? Here are some handy guidelines to follow when you’re out and about on the coast. Keep your distance f a pup has a fluffy white coat, it still needs its mother. She has probably spotted you and will be watching from a safe distance out at sea. She will only return to feed her pup when she thinks it’s safe to do so, so watch from a distance and ask others in the area to keep well away. Mums leave pups when they have their grey coats, so don’t be alarmed if a pup of this age is alone. Dogs can stress pups out, so ensure pets are kept on leads around seals and other wildlife. Don’t attempt to handle the pup This is really important. Seals are wild animals and are likely to bite. If the pup is handled whilst still being nursed by its mother, the scent you leave may cause her to reject it.

Don’t attempt to put the pup in the sea It may need to rest or may not be able to swim. Always leave the animal where it is. Don’t ignore the situation If you spot a pup that’s thin, injured or seems unwell – with symptoms like noisy breathing, coughing or a runny nose – it probably needs help. In such a case, please call the Cornish Seal Sanctuary team, who will arrange the appropriate help. Rescued pups remain with the animal care team until they have completed the rehabilitation process and are ready for release. The team currently has lots of pups recovering at the sanctuary, which makes it the perfect time for a visit to see these gorgeous animals up close. The sanctuary is also home to common seals, California sea lions, southern sea lions, humboldt penguins, Asian short-clawed otters and paddock animals, making it a great day out for the whole family!

Love food?

Well established on Cornwall’s foodie calendar, this year’s Porthleven Food Festival will celebrate 10 years of bringing food and fun to all.

A

EXPERIENCE

DISCOVER MORE Tickets for the weekend cost just £12.50 for Friday and Saturday, and £7.50 for Sunday. For full access to the whole event, plus better seats in the Chef’s Theatre, the Weekend Gourmet Ticket is just £35. For the full festival experience, choose from an array of camping and glamping options, including tent, campervan and motorhome pitches, plus Hobbit Huts complete with lights, locks, mirrors and electricity.

three-day feast of food, drink, music and family fun, Porthleven Food Festival usually attracts around 30,000 people from all over the UK. This year’s event, which takes place from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd April, will welcome celebrity chefs including patron Antony Worrall Thompson, as they take to the stage in the Chef’s Theatre. What’s more, with over 100 stalls, as well as the wonderful, already-established restaurants on Porthleven’s quayside, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to what, and where to eat! During the day, visitors can expect performances from live bands on the Lime Kiln Stage, in association with BBC Music Introducing, and from buskers around the harbour. Perfect for those with little ones in tow, you’ll find market stalls, circus and craft workshops on the family field, as well as other cultural happenings in the Literary and Acoustic tent. In keeping with the recent drive to eliminate unnecessary plastic waste, this year’s theme is ‘Anti Plastic? Fantastic!’, which means that organisers will be doing everything they can to minimise the single-use plastic throughout the festival. As well as a Green Charter that all suppliers and stallholders will have to sign,

the team will be introducing non-plastic cups at the festival bars, also encouraging local businesses to find green alternatives. There’ll also be large waste artworks dotted around the festival aimed at raising awareness of the global plastic problem, and they’ll include a 30-foot Surfers Against Sewage Warship built entirely of plastic waste. So, there’ll be plenty going on during the day, but what about after dark? As the sun sets, the Shipyard tent will play host to some brilliant bands, with Friday night’s line up kicking off with Jonah’s Lift, Go Go Skank and The Mosquitoes. Then, on Saturday, an ‘Anti Plastic? Fantastic!’ themed party will see offerings from Sound of the Sirens, People’s String Foundation, Soul Stroke and Daytoner. On Sunday, after a night spent in the Shipyard tent, you’ll no doubt be looking forward to a more relaxed Sunday. Thankfully, Sunday evening will begin with the melodious tones of Rosie Crow, before gathering momentum for Company B and finally Flats and Sharps, who will play out the rest of the evening, blurring the lines between bluegrass, folk and country with their hit-list of original crowd pleasers.
