It’s well worth spending some time sitting on a beach together or walking along the coast just thinking, and talking, about exactly what sort of wedding you both want; what sort of feel you want it to have, the memories you want to create and write it down as a short brief. Then as you start to run away with ideas you can keep coming back to that initial statement that you both came up with when you started planning your wedding, and see if it works with your brief. For example, you might decide: “We want an informal, simple wedding that costs no more than £XX, where everyone feels welcome and comfortable – with lots of laughter and great music.” Maybe you would like a small wedding with no more than very close family – parents and siblings plus 5 or 10 of your closest friends to help you celebrate in an informal, intimate wedding with some great food that will create lots of memories for you all. Or perhaps you want the full traditional white wedding, with a church service and a bit of pomp and ceremony with everyone getting the chance to dress up to the nines with a great party in the evening! You get the drift. It’s a bit like a mission statement for a business. Then, as one of you gets carried away with the venue, flowers and guest list, you can keep coming back to your original statement and see if it fits! If desperation steps in, you can, if you

Lots of unusual places are now licensed to hold weddings or – if not licenced for the actual service – might be the perfect venue for your reception, and again Cornwall has lots, from quirky to imposing! There are outside caterers or in-house chefs to create just about any sort of food you want, from street food vans to full on banquets and sumptuous canapés. In Cornwall we have just about the best of everything you could need to make the perfect wedding. The problem is the sheer amount of choice. So while you still have words by: plenty of time, get out and about and have some fun!

uy and Alice found their dream wedding location on a picturesque creek on the River Fowey. The problem was, as it can only be reached by boat on high tide or by a 15-minute woodland walk, the registration services were unable to approve it as a wedding venue. Luckily for Guy and Alice, Jennifer and Debbie from Unique Celebrations were more than happy to travel by boat to provide a unique ceremony in this beautiful location and Guy and Alice realised their dream. The venue provided boat trips for guests who later enjoyed live music and paella by the riverside. Jennifer and Debbie left the registration service to become independent celebrants providing couples with personalised wedding ceremonies at their chosen venue. Jennifer says: “Couples who use independent wedding celebrants have absolutely no restrictions on their ceremony, which can make such a difference when it comes to choosing a venue. Following the continental model, couples must attend a Registry Office of their choice for a short legal ceremony beforehand – not necessarily on the same day.”
Debbie adds: “We get to know couples and work as a team to agree what is said during the ceremony. It is a very cost-effective way to have a bespoke ceremony for those on a budget. We have a booking for a barn close to a couple’s home with the most amazing view over St Mawes Bay and others on Cornwall’s most beautiful beaches.” “Due to legislation the Registration Service is restricted to holding ceremonies in fixed buildings,” continues Jennifer. “At Unique Celebrations, our couples are free to have their ceremony where and when they want, whatever time of day.” Unique Celebrations can also help couples choose a venue, especially useful for visitors to the Duchy who don't know the area.
