Gilboy’s polish really is the bee’s knees!
Established nearly 25 years ago with the help of the Prince’s Trust, the team at Gilboy’s Furniture Restorers are celebrating this autumn after being selected as a finalist in the ural usiness of the Year Awards 2018/19. The small team of craftsmen have been busy bees over the last few years, developing a unique beeswax furniture polish, Gilboys Gold, produced by Simon, Will and Archie in their riverside workshop in Staverton just outside of Totnes. “Our aim was to create a furniture polish using the very best ingredients with no compromise. We are extremely fortunate to
have pure triple-filtered beeswax sourced direct from the bees at Buckfast Abbey,” says business owner Simon. Testament to its quality, Gilboy’s Gold has received high praise since its launch a few years ago, and continually received five-star reviews from users worldwide. Asian collection steals the show at Drake’s Auctions The quarterly Antiques and Collectables Auction, held on 27th August at Drake’s Auctions, was, as usual, a huge success, but one entry in particular stole the show. It was the collection of a once-regular visitor to the auction house, who had sadly passed away. Consisting of stunning Asian ceramics, bronzes and other curiosities, many of the items had never been seen on the south-west auction circuit before and, as is often the case with such private collections, it garnered a great deal of excitement. The auction house was abuzz and the day passed in a blur of

ere at Devon Living, we’re foodie fanatics and one category that never fails to impress is the array of ardent drinks producers countywide – alchemists, expertly honing their craft to produce liquid gold. Devon has it all, from award-winning breweries and distilleries to vineyards and orchards producing a rich and varied selection of drinks. Faced with the sheer abundance of wonderful producers, we could only give a flavour to whet the appetite. Without further ado, the bar is now open so let the tasting begin...
Distilleries
Wicked Wolf Gin
With the country enjoying something of a gin revolution of late, we’ve made this our main focus. As you’ll see, Devon has been at the forefront of the gin renaissance with several trailbla ers helping put the region firmly on the map. Often, the bottles themselves are things of real beauty too, as warm and welcoming as the contents they hold. A particular favourite of ours is Wicked Wolf Gin, a small batch handcrafted gin from Exmoor (www.wickedwolfgin.com). We recently met co-founder Julie Heap, who set up the venture with her husband, Pat Patel. “Each aromatic is prepared by hand, infused and distilled separately resulting in 11 individual distillates, which are then skilfully LEFT A tantalising blended,” explains Julie. “This approach allows cocktail made with us complete control over the strength of each Quick Gin flavour, and enables consistency from batch to batch. The gin is filtered at each stage, ê BELOW One of the fine producing a smooth, full-bodied and elegant offerings from spirit.” We’re informed it’s best enjoyed with Salcombe Gin ice and lime, over a sprig of thyme, which
enhances all the flavours. ut, ulie says, it s equally at home neat with a block or two of ice, mixed with a quality tonic and garnished with pink grapefruit, in a classic gin martini or mixed with ginger beer.” Sounds good to us! Look out also for the limited edition varieties produced periodically throughout the year, which so far have included ilver ullet and Full Moon. Salcombe Distillery, home to Salcombe Gin, has racked up a hugely impressive array of awards in its relative infancy (www. salcombegin.com). These include, most recently, Devon Chamber of Commerce’s mall usiness of the ear , and last year s Double Gold at The San Francisco World Spirits Competition for ‘Start Point’, Gold at The World Gin Awards, 3 stars at The Great Taste Awards and est roducer at the ood Drink Devon Awards. Learn about distillation at the Gin School and use a mini copper still to develop and distill your very own 70cl bottle of gin.

EXPERIENCE
GIVE IT A GO Nothing beats sampling the taste for yourself and many of the breweries, distilleries, vineyards and orchards featured have tasting tours available to book – you might even get a go at creating your own tipple! Visit the websites for all the details.
Our tasting tour continues with Dartmoor Distillery, home to its original blend lack Dog Gin and, with a bit more of a kick, the avy strength artmoor east in www. dartmoordistilleryltd.com). The team say: “We’re lucky enough to have Dartmoor as our back garden, which serves up brilliant local resources for crafting our unique products. Our gins are made with pure Dartmoor water and a carefully selected and curated mix of artmoor botanicals to bring flavour and distinction to every sip. In the summer you can often spot our master distiller, John Lawton, foraging for botanicals on Dartmoor, his faithful black labs, Taff and Tarka enjoying the walk by his side.” In our June issue, we discovered that a glass of Agnes Arber is the perfect accompaniment to a day in the Devon countryside (www.lwcdrinks.co.uk). Inspired by the great botanist, Arber Gin brings together a unique blend of nine botanicals including juniper, angelica, coriander, cassia, lime, grapefruit, lemon, orange and liquorice to create a delicious, crisp taste – a true delight for the taste buds! With an impressive rating on the popular app Ginventory, and third place out of 250 artisan gins at the 2018 International Spirits Challenge, its credentials are assured. Head to the Seven Stars in Totnes or the Royal Castle Hotel in Dartmouth to sample the magic yourself.
Trewaington Gardens
Another to try is Quick Gin, born in the Exmouth spirits bar, Spoken (www.quickgin. co.uk). Owner George Nightingale, who sells 350 different gins at the bar, tells us more: “The name arose when customers kept asking for a ‘quick gin’ before their spouses came to collect them – not available until now!” Impressively, in just a year, the gin is now already available in 500 venues across the south west. George explains how to enjoy the perfect tipple. “Quick Gin should be served with a slice of orange which brings out the best of the 11 botanicals used in the recipe. The citrus forward gin is full bodied and pairs perfectly with tonic water.”

Devon Distillery
Ed Ovendon
Devon Distillery was founded in 2013 by Cosmo Caddy, someone with a great pedigree in drinks production (www.devondistillery. com). “I was brought up around the food and drink world in Devon,” explains Cosmo. “My grandfather Maurice founded Sharpham Wine and Cheese in the year I was born, and I was picking grapes there aged four! I was introduced to grappa from Italy by my mother and have always loved it. Knowing I could get grapes’ skins, Pomace, from Sharpham each year set out to make the s first grappa. Dappa proved a hit, and the distillery started winning awards from the offset, including Silver at IWSC in 2014, a two-star award with Great Taste and a Silver Outstanding with IWSC as well as a silver and bronze in San Francisco. An exciting addition is the s first and only mobile gin distillery till

Traditional ales and craft beer have a real depth of flavour that you won t find in typical, mass-produced beers and lagers. There’s a lot to brewing beer, with different variations and combinations of hops and grain creating unique flavours and intensities. or many a brewery, its yeast is a key part of its identity, integral in maintaining consistency of taste, character and quality. When it comes to beer, it’s serious business and the breweries across Devon are clearly devoted to their craft. A good place to start is the award-winning Red Rock Brewery based in ishopsteignton, with its artisanal approach to producing beer since 2006 (www.redrockbrewery.co.uk). We heartily subscribe to the brewery’s ethos: “to brew the finest and most innovative beers around and that remains at the heart of everything we do. We hope that you enjoy drinking them as much as we enjoy making them ed ock rewery has three distinct ranges of beers, catering for all tastes from the traditional to the more contemporary: the Craft Range, the Traditional Range and the Slow Range. What unites them all is the expert craftsmanship, quality ingredients and careful balancing of flavours to create unique and delicious brews. The team explain more: “As brewers, we enjoy making all varieties of beers and experimenting with flavours, but there really is nothing quite like a good old fashioned quality pint of foaming real ale fresh from the pump.” Discover more about Red ock rewery and the team behind the beers on the ed ock rewery website. Dartmoor Brewery in Princetown, in the heart of the breathtaking countryside, lays claim to being the highest brewery in the ritish sles, at ft above sea level www. dartmoorbrewery.co.uk . artmoor rewery s flagship beer is ail Ale, a full-bodied, deep golden brown with a well-rounded flavour and rich moreish aftertaste.” Managing Director Richard Smith tells us more: “We try to source our materials locally, such as barley grown by Tim Cox who farms at Drewsteighton. His
land is relatively sheltered in the ‘Dartmoor Shadow’ and has a mix of clays and grit, one of the few areas on Dartmoor capable of growing grain to the high standards demanded by maltsters. We use Tuckers Maltings in Newton Abbot, who have been producing floor malted barley since 1900 at their current malthouse; one of only four malthouses in the country producing malt in this traditional way. The other ingredient is our people and the passion our brewing team have for making consistent great tasting beer.” Another fine independent artmoor brewery is the equally thirst-quenching Black Tor Brewery at Christow, with a growing reputation for producing quality full-flavoured ales available in cask and bottle. (www. blacktorbrewery.co.uk . lack Tor recently launched its new pop-up bar at Dartington Food Fair and is now offering bars for private and corporate events, including the udleigh Literary Festival in September. Orchards and cider makers The West Country has a strong and widely recognised heritage of cider making. Every farm would once have had its own cider press, producing much needed refreshment for the farm workers from the abundance of apples. Whether you like it sweet or dry and crisp, still or sparkling, you can enjoy delicious cider in all its guises across the county, with a whole host of fantastic producers out there. Sample the authentic taste of Devon cider at Green Valley Cyder, located at Darts Farm (www. greenvalleycyder.co.uk). So what makes it so special ell according to the team reen Valley Cyder is made only from freshly pressed Devon apples. In a county with near perfect conditions for apple-growing, we see no sense in bringing in apples or juice from outside. One of our aims is to encourage the development of farm orchards locally, particularly the replanting of traditional old cider apple varieties.”

The south west’s milder climate makes it one of the best places in the UK for growing grapes, and Devon has several vineyards well worth a visit and tasting. One to put on your list is the aforementioned and award-winning Sharpham Wine and Cheese, occupying a beautiful position on the edge of the River Dart (www.sharpham.com). Sharpham produces a fabulous range of wines for every palette, including whites, reds, rose and sparkling varieties. Just south of Exeter, Pebblebed Vineyards began as a community project in 1999 and has grown into a fabulous business with over 20 acres of vineyards, producing stunning, award-winning wines (www.pebblebed. co.uk). According to the team: “In a good year, close to 50,000 bottles of Devon wines are produced. English Sparkling is now widely recognised as some of the best in the world and tastings have shown Pebblebed Sparkling is amongst the best in England. Our vineyards are managed with careful attention to encourage wildlife and reduce the impact of farming on the environment. Pebblebed wines are similarly made with great attention to detail and in a ‘natural’ way with the minimum use of additives to best exhibit our great Devon ‘terroir’.”

We meet Julie, co-founder of Wicked Wolf Gin, and discover what sets her and husband Pat’s gin apart from the crowd.
L
aunched in September 2015 under the banner ‘The Spirit of Exmoor,’ Wicked Wolf Exmoor Gin is a premium craft gin made from 11 botanicals, distilled and blended on the banks of the picturesque river Lyn in north Devon. Passionate about all things gin, husband and wife team Pat Patel and Julie Heap are the faces behind this exciting venture. Wicked Wolf Exmoor Gin features complex layers of citrus and pepper notes finely balanced with the distinct flavours of uniper and coriander, resulting in a mature, premium spirit. ibiscus, cardamom and ka r lime leaves have been artfully blended with these traditional aromatics, creating a full-flavoured, smooth gin. Pot distilled in a copper alembic still, Wicked Wolf Exmoor Gin is lovingly blended, filtered, bottled and labelled by hand in exclusive 100-litre batches. Currently, Wicked Wolf produces a minimum of two batches a week, but there are plans, according to Julie, to expand towards the end of the year. On the process of making the gin, Julie tells us: “Each aromatic is prepared by hand, infused and distilled separately resulting in 11 individual distillates, which are then skilfully blended. This approach allows us complete control over the strength of each flavour, and enables consistency from batch to batch. The gin is filtered at each stage of the production
Julie recommends serving the gin with ice and lime, over a sprig of thyme é ABOVE

Wicked Wolf process, producing a 42% ABV smooth, fullbodied and elegant spirit.” Julie recommends ê BELOW serving the gin with ice and lime, over a sprig The latest offering, Full Moon of thyme. “This really does enhance all the flavours. ut, she says, it s equally at home neat with a block or two of ice, mixed with a quality tonic and garnished with pink grapefruit, in a classic gin martini or mixed with ginger beer.” Throughout the year, Wicked Wolf produces a number of limited edition gins. In the past, these have been Silver Bullet, at 57% ABV, and another called Full Moon. Julie excitedly tells us that a limited edition gin in partnership with Exmoor Ales is currently being created, “so watch this space!”

OF DISTILLING
Introducing Cosmo Caddy, owner and founder of Devon Distillery.
C Premium Devoncello beauituflly flavoured with Sicillian lemons
osmo Caddy, founder of Devon distillery, has quality alcohol production in his DNA. He tells us: “I was brought up around the food and drink world in Devon, my grandfather founded Sharpham Wine and Cheese the year I was born, and I was picking grapes there aged four!” Following in his footsteps, Cosmo founded Devon Distillery in 2013 and it has already progressed significantly. osmo tells us decided to start my own distillery in Devon when I returned from living in California and spotted that nobody was producing what I consider a wonderful spirit.”
The tantalising spirit that Cosmo is referring to is Grappa, an Italian made delicate and smooth post-dinner tincture, with a beautifully warming effect. Grappa is a form of pomace brandy, made from the skins, pulp and seeds of grapes. Cosmo explains: “Knowing the team at Sharpham, and knowing I could get pomace from them each year, I set about with the plan of making the first grappa in the . After visiting Italy to sample the wonderful array of grappa that they produce and to meet professional distillers, I was ready to commission our very own bespoke grappa still.”
DID YOU KNOW? Newly released in the premium range is Devoncello, a wonderful version of limoncello that has been crafted from their very own Dappa, redistilled and then steeped with organic Scicillian lemons. Cosmo tells us: “Devencello is flying off the shelves it tastes wonderful, a more citrus/zingy take on limoncello than people might expect but still with a lovely sweetness.

Devon Distillery named its version of the spirit appa, and the first harvest of this unique spirit was made in October 2013, osmo elaborates y our first harvest had also been in touch with other vineyards to work with them and secure as much pomace as could. e are still finding new and exciting vineyards and wineries that produce exceptional red wines from which we can then upcycle the skins.” Transforming a waste product from the wine industry into a premium and sophisticated spirit. Devon Distillery immediately started winning awards following the production of the first bottles of Dappa; it was granted silver at IWSC in 2014 and achieved a two star award with reat Taste, in an on-going flow of recognition from the spirit industry. Following his sister’s wedding, Cosmo was inspired to create Still on the Move and after three and a half years he was ready to launch the s first and only Mobile Gin Distillery, which sits on the back of Ginny, a 1973 VW T2 Pickup van that Cosmo acquired for the project. Ginny allows Devon Distillery to bring the art of distilling to you, Cosmo explains: “Still on the Move launched publicly in 2017 and has been instantly popular. Being able to make a custom gin for anyone, anywhere, has proven to be very exciting. In one sitting with Ginny, we can produce between 27-140 bottles of gin, which takes a few hours and has proven to be a total success with clients.” From bars and restaurants, to hotels and weddings, the chance to produce a bespoke gin at a reasonable price has been extremely popular. Still on the Move has already been lucky enough to travel the length and breadth of the country and has even made gin for the oyal avy on the flight deck of cean, with one of the bottles subsequently being presented to the Queen herself! It’s clear that Cosmo really has found a niche in the market both with Dappa and Still on the Move and it doesn’t stop there!
The most recent endeavour that Cosmo and his team have undertaken is to open a gin school, Cosmo tells us: “We are extremely proud to be opening Devon Gin School on our new premises in Dartington. We will be hosting groups of people to come and learn about gin making, produce a bottle of gin under our gentle guidance and even design their own labels,” so you can discover the art of gin making and create a bespoke bottle of your very own handcrafted gin. So, get involved! Either through simply purchasing a beautifully crafted bottle of Dappa, making your own gin with Still on the Move, or learning the nuances behind the distilling process at Devon Gin School, the opportunities to share in delicious spirits are endless.

T
he town of Salcombe hugs the hillside that surrounds it with houses crowding towards the estuary in a bid to get as close to the water’s edge as possible. Salcombe is the most southerly of Devon’s towns and consequently, has a warm, almost Mediterranean climate, creating an environment in which palm trees and even lemons and oranges can grow. Situated at the southern end of the Salcombe Estuary, the Fortescue Inn is ideally located to explore everything that the historic fishing village has to offer and is only minutes from the South West Coast Path. A couple have said of their stay: “This is our second time here – we’re walking the South West Coast Path and this little gem of a B&B is right on the path. Really convenient and such a lovely place to stay.” There are also two tranquil beaches nearby, and a ferry runs regularly to East Portlemouth on the other side of the estuary. If you want to explore quieter parts of the coastline then join the South West Coast Path and wander down from the path to secret beaches and hidden coves. The rooms at the Fortescue are an attraction unto themselves, beautifully
finished with wood detailing. The wooden floors give a rustic feel to your stay and the high ceilings create a sense of space. There are six rooms to choose from, each containing either a high spec waterfall shower or a luxurious bathtub, perfect to sink into after a day of exploring. Whether you get a tranquil garden view, or a view of the picturesque streets, the fact the rooms are on the top floor affords you privacy with all the amenities of the pub close to hand. One family has said: “We stayed in two rooms which were beautifully presented, with lovely showers and amazing baths which our children refused to get out of… this is a great place to stay in the heart of Salcombe and we look forward to returning again!” Making a stay at the Fortescue is well worth your while. Don’t take our word for it though, visit the inn and see for yourselves!

Live the lodge lifestyle at The Bay, Riviera Bay Holiday Park’s all-new luxury lodge development.
H ABOVEé Make the most of life on the English Riviera INSET Views don't come much better than that!
aving undergone what can only be described as an extreme makeover, Riviera Bay Holiday Park has become a jewel of a setting for lovers of peace and tranquil beauty. This multi-million pound makeover includes a new and exclusive development – The Bay at Riviera, which offers a range of two and three bedroom luxury lodges, most with commanding views over St Mary’s Bay. You may think that owning a holiday lodge is a privilege reserved just for the well-off, especially given the cost of even a modest cottage in the area, but here’s the surprise: holiday home ownership at The Bay is an affordable reality! Prices start from £157,000 and with home exchange and finance available it’s possible to take possession of a spacious, bungalow-style holiday home, sited on its own plot with gorgeous sea views. Riviera Bay Sales Manager, Glen Homes, tells us: “There has been a lot of interest in the lodge development, both with customers looking for an affordable bolthole here in Brixham and with those looking for an additional income. Our managed sublet programme is currently offering generous rental returns of up to £12,990 a year and that’s based on letting out the lodge for just 27 weeks of the season, leaving it free for you to use the rest of the time! Or, you could let it out for more weeks and earn even more!” The modern holiday lodge is a real home from home, and each one at The Bay at Riviera comes complete with contemporary décor and furnishings, an open-plan living
and dining area, plus a fully-equipped modern kitchen with integrated appliances. What’s more, each has a family bathroom and most enjoy en-suite facilities and a walkin wardrobe! An external veranda enhances the look of the holiday home, also creating a useful outdoor living space from which you can soak up the views. At Riviera Bay there is never any sales pressure. Glen explains: “We prefer to let people see for themselves the benefits of the lifestyle they could soon be enjoying. Those interested in taking things further, however, might ust find that they have chosen the very best possible time to take a stake in The Bay." So, if you’ve been thinking of enhancing your lifestyle with a luxury lodge by the sea, why not give the Riviera Bay team a call?

Another addition that sets Salcombe Retreat apart is the onsite shop stocked full of local produce – the site is surrounded by farms and freeholds meaning that the shop is able to source its produce from within a 20-mile radius. With freshly baked loaves from a bakery nearby, homemade jams and chutneys, Salcombe Gin, and glass bottles of milk and cheese from a dairy farm, it doesn’t get much fresher than that! Located above Soar Mill cove, this secluded bay is a 15-minute walk away and is only accessible by walking or by boat, meaning you can enjoy the bay without fronds of people crowding the shores. And, if you want to explore further afield then head into the vibrant and busy town of Salcombe – a popular holiday destination with unique Devon charm, surrounded by picturesque beaches. You can even get the South Sands ferry that runs from Salcombe to the picturesque beach of South Sands; or try your hand at one of the water sports available and then enjoy a Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream. Also close by is the delightful market town of Kingsbridge located within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Here, the streets are lined with shops, galleries, cafés and restaurants and the town hosts a popular Farmers Market, which is held on the quay every Saturday. Then there’s the scenic river
location of Dartmouth. With winding streets and a strong maritime heritage, Dartmouth has a wealth of attractions to offer, from a 14th century castle to private charters on 43ft luxury yachts The surrounding area is filled with attractions and fun things to do, and the best part is that a stay in your luxury lodge will be considerably cheaper than choosing to stay in the centre of Salcombe – and it’s also an extremely peaceful location. A holiday here really is the perfect escape from the stresses and demands of daily life, allowing you to sit back, relax and enjoy your holiday in the utmost comfort. The luxury lodges are simply divine and the enviable position atop the cliffs provides stunning coastal and rural views with a wealth of things to do on your doorstep. So, get in touch with the team today and discover the tranquility of Salcombe Retreat for yourself, because trust us – it’s worth it.

e love discovering new experiences in this beautiful county. So we were delighted to hear about Ilton Farm Campsite, home to the ultimate luxury camping experience: Salcombe Shepherd Huts. The campsite is set on a gorgeous working farm in the popular South Hams, with rolling hills cascading down towards the beautiful coastline below. The farm is run by husband and wife team, Jon and Vicki Rogers. We catch up with Vicki, who tells us more about their story, and what you can expect at this coastal country idyll. “I used to be a teacher,” says Vicki, “but I gave it up to run the huts and have more time at home with my children and animals – I haven’t looked back since!” As well as its fabulous touring pitches for tents, motorhomes and caravans, the campsite’s crowning glory are undoubtedly its sumptuous shepherd huts, which are handcrafted right here in Devon, as Vicki explains. The craftsmanship is truly reflected in the huts’ beauty and quality. They are all built from wood sourced from sustainable Devon trees and have a very low carbon footprint. It’s really important to us to be eco-friendly and support local businesses. They feature solid wooden exposed beams, beautiful wooden windows, and a mezzanine full double bed with a bespoke solid wooden staircase, which creates much more floor space, really enhancing the entire experience.”
What’s more, two new huts arrived this year, which are even bigger and more luxurious, with underfloor heating, an en-suite, a kingsi e bed and two further bunks, as well as a wood burner and barbeque. Vicki continues: “The private outside space creates the feeling of exclusivity. No matter how you spend your holiday, you’ll come away with lifelong memories to share with your family and friends.” Why not top the experience with delicious Devon produce delivered directly to your pitch for your arrival, courtesy of the local online farmers’ market? Salcombe Bakehouse will also deliver freshly-baked goods each morning, if you wish. The campsite is dog friendly and open all year round, whilst another notable feature is the brand new, “all singing and dancing” shower and toilet block, complete with underfloor heating, a laundry facility and family wet room. It’s the perfect base for exploring the South Hams. With every detail carefully considered and every conceivable need taken care of, a stay at Ilton Farm Campsite will guarantee an experience that leaves a permanent smile on your face!

AN INDIVIDUAL
APPROACH Outstanding all round-education with an independent flair and extensive support for pupils.
N
ext year, south Devon’s Trinity School celebrates its 40th birthday and the 2018/19 school year promises to be another year of celebrating successes both inside and outside the classroom. Being located in Teignmouth, this coeducational school which welcomes both day and boarding pupils, creates a whole host of opportunities for pupils to learn in and enjoy their natural surroundings. The school site overlooks the town and offers glorious views of the sea, which means pupils regularly get involved in various water-based activities throughout the year including sailing and canoeing. A vast extra-curricular offering means full use is made of the school’s short distance
away from Dartmoor, with increased participation at all levels in the Duke of Edinburgh award and a triumphant effort from Trinity’s Ten Tors team being highlights of the last academic year. The facilities onsite are equally impressive and include a tennis academy, outdoor heated swimming pool and large sports fields. It’s not just outside the classroom where Trinity School succeeds. Last year marked one of the best years of participation in national Independent School Association (ISA) competitions, with the national award for work in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects coming as a result of hard work by pupils, staff, and other members of the Trinity community. The school was recognised for its Science Buskers club, which has grasped the imagination and curiosity of many pupils by taking part in experiments and bringing science to the wider community at other schools, events and even at the Devon County Show! Other ISA awards were awarded for work in art and design fields, with sport remaining a particular strength. Last year saw Trinitonians on the podium at many national level sporting events including swimming, tennis, athletics and football. Regionally, Trinity’s sportspeople have performed very well with first places in a range of sports and

consistent representation of the south west at national level. Trinity is also well known for its highly rated pastoral care, which was rated outstanding in its most recent qualitative inspection. It’s the family feel of this school that means pupils know who to turn to if they need help, and a proactive approach is taken by staff because of the emphasis and focus on each pupil as an individual. The ‘whole school’ approach, where pupils can take their first steps in education at the Prep Lodge nursery at three years old and finish at the end of ixth orm as they enter the professional world or higher education, highlights the close-knit nature of Trinity School. Last year also saw a tremendous set of summer results at Trinity, with 50% of results at A Level/BTEC awarded A* or A grades. This achievement shows that the school, which remains non-selective, supports all individuals to reach their maximum potential. However, as an independent school it is important for Trinity that pupils get more than just an education. Exams and results are important for future life but universities and employers are increasingly looking for well-rounded individuals with experiences not necessarily gained by sitting in the classroom. Trinity’s Sixth orm encompasses this by ensuring that
by the time pupils leave for university or employment, they have the life skills needed to succeed independently. Updated boarding accommodation means both day and boarding pupils get opportunities to prepare to live independently. Trinity understands that parents lead busy lives and to help with this the boarding offer is flexible and offers wrap-around care for pupils in the younger years. Many members of the boarding community are full boarders, but a lot more families are utilising more flexible offers. These include weekly boarding with weekends at home, as well as a flexi-boarding option where pupils can stay at school on an ad hoc basis when required. uch flexibility is appreciated by parents and pupils alike and the close knit boarding community creates a welcoming and safe environment. Anyone interested in finding out more should visit the website, and if you would like to visit the school and see the individual approach first hand then Trinity welcomes parents and prospective pupils to get in touch and arrange a tour.

We pay a visit to the Old Rectory Hotel, a gorgeous boutique country house hotel near the coast in Exmoor National Park.
O
ABOVE The Old Rectory is a stunning country house hotel RIGHT Sumptuous accommodation and delectable dining
ne of the things we love most about Devon is its perfect combination of coast and countryside. And Exmoor National Park, in particular, manages to distil the very best of both into one beautiful region of lush country bordered by an enchanting stretch of north coast. There’s so much to do and discover here and a great place to start your adventures is the Old Rectory Hotel in Martinhoe, a literal stone’s throw from the coast. The hotel has been beautifully decorated throughout to an exacting standard, exuding English country charm in spades, from the elegant reception rooms to the 11 luxurious, inviting and individually-styled en-suite bedrooms. Your room might enjoy views of the sea or the gorgeous gardens; either way, you really couldn’t hope for a better base for exploring the best of Exmoor. The grounds are as pretty and manicured as the hotel itself, green lawns punctuated by a range of trees, exotic plants and a lake, complete with its own bridge. There are many spots in which to catch the sun or the shade, depending on your preference, perhaps with a good book and most definitely with a drink of something refreshing in hand. Indeed, if you’re into your food and drink, and love it fresh and local, then you’ve come to the right place. Executive Chef Thomas Frost is a native of north Devon and delights in showcasing the best ingredients and fare that the region’s natural pantry has to offer. Whether it’s Ilfracombe crab, lime and avocado cocktail or a fillet of evon ed uby beef, your taste buds are sure to thank you for the experience. The wine list, meanwhile, has been carefully selected for taste, value and to complement the menu. The Old Rectory Hotel is the realisation of the vision of Huw Rees and Sam Prosser, originally from Redland in Bristol and who “took to the hills to follow our dream and open the kind of hotel where we and our friends would like to stay”. The awards they have racked up to date really do speak for themselves, from TripAdvisor’s ‘Most Romantic Hotel in Europe’ to Visit England’s 'Small Hotel of the Year'. So, if Exmoor is on your list of places to visit (and it really should be), why not begin by booking a room at the Old Rectory?

Developing character Pete Last, Headmaster of Kingsley School, discusses whether it’s more important for your child to gain lots of qualifications, or to develop and sustain a good character.
é ABOVE Kingsley School is devoted to developing character as much as nurturing academic success
RIGHT Pete Last, Headmaster at Kingsley School
S
chools should develop children's character, not just their ability to pass exams, according to Pete. “I think this is a very interesting question for those of us who are parents. As a Dad, the most important thing for me is that my children are of good character; they are honest, reliable, determined, resilient, kind and respectful. This matters much more to me than their exam results ever did.” There is a lot of talk in many schools at present about the importance of character. Most people would probably agree with the assertion that it’s important for us to have a good character, even if they are not sure exactly what this might mean. So is it something that can only be caught, or can it also be taught? “I am now the Headmaster of Kingsley School in Bideford and I have lots of conversations with prospective and current parents about their children and the dreams and aspirations that the parents have for them. For some parents, it would appear at first glance that exam success is the be all and end all, but it is usually only a matter of moments before the conversation has broadened to include such important aspects of the children’s development as their happiness, their integrity and their character. As a school, we know that it’s possible to teach character because we do it every day." Pete continues: “We encourage our pupils to try to develop a growth mindset whereby their attitude towards things they are finding di cult is not this is impossible, so m going to give up but is rather this is really hard but I’m going to persevere until I can do it’. We see this in the classroom; we see it in our PE and games lessons; we see it every day in
a myriad of ways throughout all age groups within the school. “It is wonderful to watch students push themselves in such a wide variety of settings and, more often than not, surprise themselves with what they are capable of achieving. Even when they don’t succeed, as a school we always endeavour to be there to pick them up, dust them down and set them on their way again, just as I remember doing so vividly when my children were learning to ride their bikes. Quince's honey is produced by 1,500 local hives
INSET Why not give beekeeping a go?
uince Honey Farm in South Molton produces a variety of different honeys, all collected from around 1,500 hives situated in the glorious north Devon and Exmoor countryside. The bees start producing honey in the spring months and, weather permitting, can continue right through until winter. ith an abundance of flora available to the bees in this stunning part of the country, each season brings with it a different taste and quality to the honey they produce. We at Devon Living love to sample the best local produce and we’re spoiled for choice with the offering from Quince Honey Farm. For instance, there’s the Dandelion Honey. ne of the first flowers to bloom in the , andelion oney is one of uince s first honeys of the year. t s runny, floral and absolutely packed with flavour. Then there s the Spring Blossom Honey. To produce this, the bees forage from the bright yellow flowers of the oil seed rape fields. The honey produced is very sweet with a smooth texture, making it a firm favourite with many customers. Devon Flower Honey is made during the summer months, when the bees can be found gathering pollen from the hedgerows and white clover fields. ith a mild but tasty flavour, this clear honey is perfect with everything, whether it’s a dollop on your porridge, or adding sweetness to marinade. The set honey has been left to naturally granulate, giving it a lovely thick texture, ideal for smothering over hot toast. That’s breakfast sorted then!
During August, all the bees are moved to nearby Exmoor to forage the picturesque heather covered hills. The resulting honey – called Exmoor Heather Honey – has a strong and distinctive taste with a thick, luscious texture. Last, but by no means least is Ivy Honey. This one is particularly special, and can only be produced if the conditions are just right during the latter part of the year. The texture can be very firm, so often requires agitating with a knife, but it’s totally worth it for the ama ingly flavoursome reward. To sample some of these for yourself, visit Quince Farm Shop. Alternatively, why not head to the website and pick up a jar there? As well as seasonal honeys, the team also sell their own honey-based products including chutney, mustard, marmalade, beeswax, honeycomb and skincare products, so it’s definitely worth a visit

Based in the West Country, practitioner Daphne J Smith has over 16 years’ experience of providing permanent makeup to happy clients. Working alongside her assistant of 14 years, Tanya, who has personally experienced the benefits of permanent makeup procedures herself, they make a formidable team. THE ROAD
y r e v o c e r o t We catch up with Gerri Creedon, the inspiring personality behind Regain Recovery.
G
DID YOU KNOW? In the last year, more than 40 people have been through the Regain Recovery programme and are maintaining their recovery still. This includes them retaining their relationships and careers.
erri tells us: “People often ask me where my passion for supporting people to make positive changes in their lives comes from, especially as I had a successful career working in the oil industry. My own struggle with alcohol over the years led me to realise that I had to make significant changes in my life. y years struggling with alcohol were arguably the most painful of my adult life, however somewhere deep inside I knew there was hope, and experience shows me now that I was right.” Gerri explains how recovery took her on a journey of self-discovery, where she regained her self-esteem and loving relationships. “Following my own treatment I completed a post-graduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy and I am a qualified Therapist. ve worked in private drug and alcohol residential rehabilitation settings and other agencies that specialise in substance misuse, both in the community as well as the NHS. I also had a very busy private counselling practice.” ut, erri tells us, this still wasn t enough, and the desire to help more people experience the positive changes that she went through kept pushing her forward. Thus egain ecovery was born. erri set up egain ecovery in six acres of tranquil land in the heart of north Devon. “My vision was to create a safe, warm and friendly environment
where individuals struggling with substance use could access treatment and recover, but it had to be somewhere d be happy to go myself. My own treatment was very effective for me, but it did not provide the support for my loved ones that they needed. Partners and loved ones have their own needs on the recovery journey, so I was determined to cover the needs of everyone involved.” Gerri is passionate and committed to providing an effective, excellent service to all clients and their families. “My aim is to empower people approaching recovery, enabling them to help themselves and learn as much as possible about substance use and the underlying issues associated with it. With knowledge comes power, and understanding the cause and effect of substance use can be a powerful tool.” Gerri continues: “I am excited to share my recovery journey with anyone struggling to regain control of their own issues. I know how important it is for people to see that success is possible, and this is a key feature of the egain ecovery programme.
