DOG-FRIENDLY COTTAGES

4 of the best

dog-friendly cottages Don’t leave pooch behind, here are four of the newest properties to allow dogs, from Helpful Holidays. 1. Evergreen, Rinsey Cove Evergreen is a beautiful cottage with little touches of luxury, in a wonderful, relaxing setting. This gorgeous detached, Grade II listed cottage, which sleeps up to six, promises sweeping views over Mount’s Bay and west Cornwall. Beautifully presented throughout, it’s an idyllic retreat. The front garden looks out upon the sea view, while the peaceful rear garden has a lovely summerhouse and a patio, ideal for summer barbeques. Rinsey is a hamlet of granite cottages at the end of a lane leading to the Coast Path, perfect for walkies, and down to its cove. Praa Sands and Porthleven are both nearby, offering shops, cafés and beaches.

2. Neptune, Constantine Bay Around the headland from Constantine Bay on the north coast, in the hamlet of Treyarnon, you’ll find Neptune: a stylish cottage in a modern development of holiday apartments and cottages, just 50 yards from the splendid beach. Sleeping up to six, inside is light and fresh, with open-plan living spaces offering all the modern comforts you’d expect. To the side, the terrace is the perfect place to soak up the rural views. This is a truly hassle-free beachside base for relaxing and exploring the fabulous headland and beyond. Treyarnon promises a sandy beach, plus a café and beach shop with surfboard hire. Nearby Constantine Bay village has great places to eat, while you can enjoy the sand and surf of Trevose Head. There’s a good golf course and country club behind the dunes, and plenty more to explore in St Merryn and Padstow within a short distance. 6 Dogs Love 2015

3. Pen Nare, Portscatho In Portscatho village, in an elevated position, is Pen Nare, a commanding double-fronted period house. Its large bay windows have stunning views across Gerrans Bay and allow light to stream into the seaward-facing front rooms. Pen Nare is a comfortable and welcoming home for family gatherings any time of year, sleeping up to nine. It’s also a great spot for exploring the coastline, chilling in the garden or snuggling up by the fire. The rear garden with courtyard is made for alfresco dining, with steps up to terraced garden for catching the evening sun. Outhouses provide ample storage for surf and beach gear. Portscatho is a small former fishing village with good pubs, shops and galleries, on the beautiful Roseland Peninsula. Porthcurnick Beach is only two miles by road, or half a mile by the Coast Path. There are some lovely walks around the harbour and along the South West Coast Path with tremendous views. It’s around five miles to St Mawes, another stunning place to take the dog offering more scenic walks.

4. Trelawney, Porthcurno A mile inland from Porthcurno, in the hamlet of Trethewey, sits Trelawney, a large detached bungalow, sleeping up to six across three bedrooms. This is a comfy, convenient home in the heart of Poldark country. To the front, a mature hedgerow shelters the lawn, while at the back there’s a safe, enclosed garden to relax in with your pup. A bus service is almost on the doorstep, with an open-bus round-peninsula service in the summertime. Porthcurno is a small village with a gorgeous, white sand beach, sheltered by high cliffs either side. It’s an oasis of stunning natural beauty. On the cliffs sits the internationally renowned Minack Theatre. A beautiful part of the world to enjoy with your dog.

TEAM FAVOURITE

Team

Nicky Heyworth, from Helpful Holidays, chooses her favourite dog-friendly retreat. Nicky Heyworth knows a thing or two about finding a stunning location. “People find a house they love and they’ll go back to it,” she says. And she’s speaking from experience, having stayed at the same gorgeous stone cottage, Tregwynne in Rinsey Cove, for four years in a row since 2012. “On arrival, we’re greeted with delicious homemade lemon drizzle cake and a bottle of wine in the fridge. It’s a fantastic welcome; it feels like we’re going home. It’s a lovely touch. Just little things like that, even simply a pint of milk in the fridge, really make an enormous difference.” The cottage is owned by artist Ingrid Sofrin, who paints seascapes around the surrounding coastline. And it’s a beautiful stretch of Cornwall nestled between Praa Sands and Porthleven, with lovely walks along the South West Coast Path. But what initially tempted Nicky to this location? Simple. “The dog likes it… He does the choosing! It’s

very dog-friendly there. We can walk from the cottage to the Coast Path and right down to the beach. We usually go just before Easter, a good time for us as dogs are welcome on beaches then. It’s always worth planning ahead as some beaches have restricted access during the prime season.” And knowing your needs is important, as Nicky explains: “When helping you plan your holiday, I really like to know what matters to you. That might be something like accessibility, for example easy parking, being close to amenities or having the local pub within walking distance.” Of course, ensuring that the beloved pooch is welcome with plenty to keep them occupied nearby is often essential for many holiday goers! 5 REASONS TO BRING YOUR DOG

5

Reasons to bring your dog

No one likes to start their holiday standing at the kennel doors with a lump in their throat. Leaving your dog behind can be an upsetting process for both parties. Besides, as many dog owners agree, if your dog is happy, you’re happy!

The cost of keeping your four-legged friend with you can actually work out considerably cheaper than using kennels.

1

In Cornwall, there is every kind of holiday for every kind of dog owner, whether your dog loves to get messy on the beach or is a pampered pooch.

2

Bringing your dog lets you explore in a way like no other. This is a back-tonature experience for your dog with new scents and sensations.

3

Ever more gardens, attractions, pubs and eateries in Cornwall now allow dogs or have doggie designated areas, so plan well and you can share the entire experience with your trusty companion.

4 5

Quite simply, it wouldn’t be a true family holiday without your dog!

dog-friendly beaches Dogs love playing in the sand and surf, and when it comes to beaches in Cornwall they’re really spoilt for choice. But remember some beaches are off limits from Easter Day to 1st October. So here are some they can enjoy any time of year. Discover our selection of beaches that are free to roam all year round, including a few hidden gems that you might not know already.

Constantine Bay Just a few miles from Padstow on the north coast is Constantine Bay. This stretch of golden sand that faces west is a Mecca for surfers thanks to the serious rips. But it’s also a fantastic spot for dog lovers too, with your pooch welcome all year round. Whether it’s sticks, stones or a battered old ball, dogs won’t care when they’re getting their paws wet and leaping along the shoreline in pursuit of cast-off treasure destined for their slobbery jaws. The beach is lifeguard patrolled in the summer months, so you can enjoy a paddle too, but just be careful of those waves! There are plenty of pubs and restaurants in nearby St Merryn and Padstow, to enjoy a hearty meal afterwards.

Durgan Beach Glendurgan, with its stunning subtropical gardens, is a must visit when in Cornwall. And nearby Durgan Beach set on the banks of the Helford River is an idyllic spot in which to relax, while your fourlegged friend enjoys some beachcombing. Adventurous pooches will love scrambling over the rocks and dipping their inquisitive noses into rockpools, while energetic canines can perfect their fetching skills on the sand and shingle. Much of the land here is managed by the National Trust and there is a car park at the top of the valley.

Prussia Cove Roughly between Porthleven and Penzance on the west coast is this delightful and hidden rocky cove. The area is famed as the home of the Carters, notorious smugglers of the 18th century. Today, it’s another great spot for rockpooling and

strolling along the beach at low tide with your trusty companion. It’s also not far from Marazion overlooking St Michael’s Mount, yet another beautiful spot for walkies off season.

Whipsiderry Beach Another great beach for getting paws sandy is Whipsiderry on the outskirts of Newquay. Despite being near the hubbub of the popular resort, it remains a hidden gem due to its lack of on site amenities and relatively tricky access down some steep steps. It’s only suitable during low tide, so check the timetables before heading off. This aside, it is well worth the visit if you’re feeling adventurous. The picturesque cove is dominated by the large island. The Sunday Times named it one of Europe’s top 20 beaches. With its expanse of inviting flat yellow sand, it’s the perfect playground for chasing gulls, catching balls and jumping in puddles.

Godrevy Cove - LIZARD Not the Godrevy near Hayle (although this is great off season too), this undiscovered beach is actually on the Lizard Peninsula near St Keverne. It’s a bit of a walk to the nearest car park, but without any cliffs to climb down, you are rewarded on arrival with a glorious beach: golden sand at all tides for the pooch to run wild on! The perfect spot to watch the sun go down with an evening picnic. Dogs Love 2015 13

Lifejackets

A trendy extra or safety necessity?

Lifejackets are essential kit for the boater, kayaker or sailor. But does a dog really need a lifejacket? Is it a help or a hindrance in a ‘dog overboard’ situation? And how do you select the proper life jacket for your pooch anyway? There’s an added challenge in the fact that dogs come in many shapes and sizes! The last thing anyone wants is a dog to fall overboard or swim too far out, as this can create panic and a potential safety nightmare. People have died trying to rescue their dogs. If a dog is wearing a flotation jacket, it gives you the ability to calmly deal with the situation. All vests should have reflective stripes to help with visibility, quick release buckles, and, most importantly, a large nylon handle on the top to make it easier to pull your dog out of the water. Have your dog wear the vest at home to ensure not only that it fits correctly but to also give your dog time to get used to it. You don’t want it battling the life vest when trying to swim to safety. Not all dogs can swim Some dogs just don’t take to the water well. Breeds with low body fat like Doberman pinschers and boxers can have

trouble in the water. Older dogs may tire easily and breeds prone to hip dysplasia may have difficulty swimming. Hypothermia can be a threat to some breeds of dogs when they are unduly exposed to cold water. No matter how well a dog can swim under supervision, all dogs can get tired or become disoriented. Lifejackets allow a dog to swim for longer in the water, so as well as safety, they can enjoy a swim with less effort. Karen Hoyle, Owner of Rockpool The Beach Dog Company, explains: “We’ve seen a significant rise in the purchase of lifejackets for dogs from our online shop. Kayakers, paddle-boarders, boaters, surfers – basically anyone who loves to take their dog with them in or on water can see the benefit of a lifejacket. The RNLI and Coastguard in the UK rescue over 300 dogs per year from cliffs and our seas and we always advise owners to do all they can to keep dogs safe.” So which jacket to choose? A recent winner in an online survey of dog lifejackets was the EzyDog, top rated for buoyancy, comfort, visibility and strength.

FUN ON FOUR LEGS

Fun on

THE BEACH The Collins family meet up with old friends at Daymer Bay, a huge golden sand beach that stretches along the coastline towards the Camel Estuary.

Donna and Chris Collins, five-year-old Lucy and spaniel George (AKA Chaos) are waiting armed with beach balls, a cricket set and have plenty of ideas for a fun afternoon on the beach. The Collins family simply love Daymer Bay; it has always been a family favourite. “You can take off your shoes and get the sand between your toes, and even in autumn there’s nothing better than a bracing paddle,” laughs Donna. “For us it’s probably our favourite time of year in Cornwall. The landscape constantly changes. We’ve got misty days, frosty mornings, stormy seas and brilliant sunlit afternoons like this. When it comes to making your own entertainment, where better? The beaches all around the county are lovely, safe playgrounds for the kids.” It’s a fabulous place for the family dog, George, too. “He’s pretty excitable,” says Chris. “But here he’s got

miles of sand to run across and let off some steam!” It isn’t long before the boys are setting up the cricket and Harvey begins to valiantly take on the grown-ups and might stand a better chance if only George would stop stealing the ball and running away with it. By the dunes, Sadie and Lucy are showing their artistic prowess by drawing sand pictures while George gives his verdict on their masterpieces by digging holes in their creations. Down at the water’s edge the mums are walking along the wet sand… they’ve been friends along time so there’s a lot to talk about. Walking across the dunes towards the village of Rock a mile away, the kids run up and down the sandy paths, hide among the tufts of grass and stop to collect seashells. George has a very nice time bounding around, looking cute and enjoying all the

exciting seaside smells. “There’s so much for the kids to explore here,” says Chris. “You sometimes forget it’s the simple things that can be fascinating. The rock pools, beachcombing, writing your name in the sand, throwing pebbles in the sea for the dog – just having a lazy day together.” As the sun starts to slant westwards, everyone heads to the Waterfront Café & Bar in Polzeath. Sitting outside on the patio, they treat themselves to warm muffins and toasted teacakes, slices of fruit cake, loaded hot

chocolates, and for Neil and Chris, a pint of Rattler, the locally-made cider. This is just the pick-me-up they all need after playing on the beach. Donna looks out over the beach where a picture postcard sun is setting over the sea and says, “Why would you want to be anywhere else? In winter it’s pretty special here, too. The beach is often deserted so we feel like we have the place to ourselves.” By the time they all head home it’s almost dark and needless to say, soon after they leave the car park, the dog and children are fast asleep. year-round dog-friendly gardens

Four-legged visitors are welcomed with open paws in many of Cornwall’s glorious gardens. We’ve sniffed out those that are open year-round for walkies, so take our lead and get tails wagging…

Lost Gardens of Heligan There’s no limit to the amount of fun that visitors of the wagging tail and wet nose variety can have at this famous garden; canine companions on best behaviour are given a year-round welcome and have over 200 acres to explore.

They’ll discover new smells galore in the Victorian Productive and Pleasure Gardens, will love the subtropical jungle and go mad for the ancient woodland. A well-timed post-walkies nap will ensure padding paws are clear of the no-go zones for dogs: the tearoom, Stewardry, shop and plant sales areas. www.heligan.com

Trebah Garden This ravine garden leads to a private beach on the Helford River so paws can get muddy, sandy and wet at the doggie haven of Trebah Garden. Poop scoops are available on arrival to take care of any ‘presents’. There are designated doggie tables in Planters Café, while the garden terrace and picnic areas are pooch-friendly refuel spots too. www.trebahgarden.co.uk

Pinetum Park Another garden with the woof factor is Pinetum Park in St Austell. With the largest collection of plants in the county, the varied 30 acres are full of character and perfect for energetic canines and garden mad doggie masters alike. From the wide open ‘Pinetum’ with its amphitheatre arrangement of conifers and pines, to the seclusion and intimacy of the Japanese Garden, there are visual treats at every turn and a wealth of wildlife. There’s also a tearoom and farm shop selling delicious produce throughout the year. www.pinetumpark.com

the sheltered valley provide a perfect setting for large and exotic plantings. Visit the outdoor area of the Lime Tree Café and complete the visit by popping in the shop; well-behaved pooches kept on a lead are more than welcome. www.tremenheere.co.uk

Eden Project The Eden Project really needs to be seen to be believed. And the great news is that the dog is welcome too! Four-legged visitors can explore miles of paths within the former china clay quarry and whilst they aren’t permitted in the Biomes or undercover areas, they are welcome in the Visitor Centre and can relax in designated outdoor undercover dining areas. dogs walks Here are three fantastic ded by our in Cornwall as recommen ast Path. friends at South West Co

1. King Arthur and The Slate Coast: 5 miles Start: Tintagel, Visitor Centre | Finish: Tintagel, Visitor Centre

This is a great dog walk that follows part of an old donkey track from the village of Treknow to the cove at Trebarwith Strand, which is dog-friendly throughout the year. The Port William Inn nestles in the cliffs just above the sandy cove and welcomes dogs. The walk takes in Tintagel Church, on the cliffs outside the village, then follows a series of tracks and lanes parallel to the coast before descending to the cove of Trebarwith Strand. It then returns to Tintagel along the coast, passing the remnants of some historic quarries and then the magnificently sited Tintagel Castle. A brilliant walk for children, who will love ‘King Arthur’s castle’ on the island, and a great walk in springtime, when the sea is blue in the bright sunshine and there are primroses and new scrolls of bracken under the gorse and the blossoming thorn bushes. In autumn, it’s at its best on a windy day, when flocks of fulmars and kittiwakes stream by on their way south and gannets can be seen offshore. 24 Dogs Love 2015

2. Padstow to Harlyn Bay: 6.9 miles Start: Padstow Harbour | Finish: Harlyn Bay

This walk includes the dog-friendly beaches at Harbour Cove and Hawker’s Cove and at low tide there are acres of sand for them to play on, making this a great big sand pit playground for pooches! The Old Custom House Inn, the Shipwrights, the London Inn and the Old Ship Hotel in Padstow are all dog-friendly pubs. A long walk, on mostly level terrain, although the route becomes more challenging and rugged after Gun Point. The dramatic coastline around Stepper Point includes an enormous collapsed sea cave at Roundhole Point, and it is a good walk for older children who can do the distance, passing several sandy beaches as well as smugglers’ caves. A good autumnal stroll will treat you to awe-inspiring views of migrating birds and marine life. 26 Dogs Love 2015

3. A twirl of The Cape: 4.8 miles Start: St Just, Market Square | Finish: St Just, Market Square

This walk takes in parts of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site and offers great views out towards The Brisons and the Longships Lighthouse. Past the Cape, you reach Priest’s Cove, where a natural swimming pool at low tide provides a safe area for wave shy doggy paddlers. The Commercial and the King’s Arms in St Just are dog-friendly pubs. This walk starts and finishes in the old mining town of St Just. It passes through an area once heavily mined for tin and copper, passing a number of historic mining sites, and then along the coast to the major landmark of Cape Cornwall. It then continues along the coast past an important prehistoric site before returning to St Just via Nanquidno, where the lush subtropical vegetation is alive with wildflowers and birdsong in spring and with migrant birds feasting on the berries in autumn. A good walk for children, who will love the romance of the old mining landscape. xx Dogs Love 2015

Trewince Holiday Lodges Just how you imagined Cornwall to be. Dog Friendly For most owners the thought of leaving their dog at home just isn’t an option as they are part of the family. Not only is it more enjoyable, but also practical to take your dog away on holiday with you. At Trewince we understand this, so with many of our lodges welcoming pets it would be a real pity to leave them behind. There is no need to pay for kennels, or to ask friends or relatives to take care of them.

Look out for. . Steep cliffs While some coastal walks are a comfortable distance from the cliff edge, there are other areas that not only hug the edge, but embrace it. The coastline has many places to explore, but to avoid your dog from getting too curious about the edge it’s best to keep them under control on a lead. They’ll enjoy it just as much and you’ll find the whole experience much less stressful.

To experience the slower pace is a little strange if I’m honest, though not unwelcome. Once we’re over the Tamar, I look to my husband, Zackary, then to the dog, Aston, who’s panting in my ear. A few days abroad seemed like too much hassle – kennels, too pricey, and the last time I left Aston, I spent the first hours of our getaway in near inconsolable tears. Fondly scratching at his ear, I can’t help but grin like an idiot. This feels like our first family holiday together. We reach Polperro in the mid afternoon and waste no time settling in and exploring the area. It is a beautiful fishing village that hugs the harbour and is a world away from the city that we’ve travelled from. We’re up early the next day, before sunrise and walk the coastline to Lantic Bay. The sun begins to tint the dark, starry vista as we reach the coast path; we light up our torches and carefully make our way along the path. Travelling the coastal path at dawn is just exquisite. The air is fresh, the scene is awe-inspiring, the world awakes with sound and there’s not a soul in sight. When we reach Lantic Bay via a sharp descent which Aston had no trouble negotiating, the sun is fully up against a sky of wisps of cloud. Aston bounds across the sand like a pup while Zack and I create a makeshift breakfast from a few things we had bought in the village and some ripe blackberries we have picked along the path. Zack casts his fishing line, not in the hope of catching anything, but just because it seems like the right thing to do. We have been warned about rip currents here so we keep Aston happily entertained in the shallows. We spend the entire day at the bay, not once feeling bored in this beautifully secluded place.

More out of necessity than want, we make our way back to Polperro in the late afternoon to negotiate the five miles of coastline to a pub in the village and a well-earned pint. Rather reluctantly, we leave the peaceful village and inch our way along the coast towards the Roseland Peninsula where we are to spend a few days camping, following the river and ambling round the small picturesque settlements. The last leg of our journey takes us north to a place that has intrigued my partner since he started traipsing through the Internet: Chysauster Village and it’s surrounding area of ancient stonework. We begin with a bite to eat at Lanyon Farm Tea Room before strolling over to Chûn Castle and Chûn Quoit, the Iron Age hillfort. Chûn Quoit is an eerie place, believed to have been used for communal burials during the Neolithic period. The views from here are tremendous with plenty of room for Aston to entertain himself. Strolling across the open, wind beaten fields then along the road we find ourselves at Mên-an-Tol, one of the best known Megalithic structures in Britain, with the least known about it. The mystery of this place alone makes it feel special. Then it’s on to Ding Dong Mine, one of the oldest in Cornwall and Lanyon Quoit, which is beautifully photogenic. After an afternoon strolling over the calming land, we toddle back to the tea room for a little respite from the blustery day. As we head back over the Tamar, quietly content and relaxed, Aston snoozes on the back seat and I kick myself for not travelling with him sooner. We saved money, didn’t worry about leaving our dog at home, and, most importantly, all three of us had a lot of fun!

Cheeky Pint With The Pup! Whatever town or village you find yourself in, you’re sure to find a pub that will welcome your four-legged friend as openly as they welcome you.

1 There are many different factors that make a good pub: location, what’s on tap, food, a hearty fireplace, character and the ambience. Most of the pubs that you’ll find dotted about the county mix traditional style with modern twists to their food. Here are just a few to get you going.

1

Pandora Inn, Mylor Bridge. Settings don’t get much more beautiful than at the awardwinning riverside 13th century pub, Pandora Inn, on the edge of Restronguet Creek. Both you and your pooch will be greeted with a warm welcome (well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome throughout, except in the dining rooms). Enjoy a range of tasty treats on the menu, with food served all day, every day. After lunch, why not enjoy a leisurely stroll with the pup on the beach at low tide?

2

2

Bird In Hand, Hayle. Built in 1860, the Victorian building was originally a stables and coach house for the Harvey family who lived in Glanmor House at the centre of Paradise Park. Part of the character is that you can still see the structure of the stables inside the pub. With a central long bar that holds a selection of ales, the Bird In Hand caters well for Real Ale buffs with its hand-crafted ‘Paradise Bitter,’ brewed on site.

Driftwood Spars, St Agnes. The Driftwood Spars is many things, but it really comes into its own as a pub. This excellent pub offers not one but three cosy bars with wood burning stoves and a fantastic selection of alcohol. The friendly and knowledgeable staff serve some of the best beer around and pride themselves in delivering a fantastic pint. The spirit section includes 35 malts, 11 rums and a good smattering of brandy, vodka and gin to warm you on even the coldest and wildest of days.

3

3

Norway Inn, Perranarworthal. On the road between Truro and Falmouth, you’ll find the delightful, Norway Inn, a popular, historic pub. The extensive menu is complemented by a range of daily specials, with food served all day. So having worked up an appetite, sit back and enjoy one of St Austell’s thirst-quenching real ages or a Cornish lager while your lunch is prepared. And if you happen to be staying for the night, your beloved pooch can join you too in one of the luxurious en suite rooms..

4

The Ship Inn, Mousehole. Two miles South of Penzance, is this archetypal Cornish village that boasts what is said to be one of the most beautiful harbours in Britain, once a thriving centre for pilchard fishing. The Ship Inn, despite the years, has not lost its old traditions and is set at the heart of a strong, friendly, local community.

KEEP COOL

Chill out

4 ways to keep your pooch cool in the heat Here in Cornwall, we have some glorious summer weather, perfect for a day out exploring the beach with the dog. We’re always reminded on hot days to slap on sunscreen, drink lots of water and only exercise outdoors during the cooler parts of

the day. But what about our beloved pets? Fetch.co.uk, the online pet store from Ocado, has pulled together a quick and handy guide to help you protect your furry friends when temperatures soar.

42 Dogs Love 2015

4 ways to keep cool.indd 2

11/09/2015 15:18

DOGS LOVE CORNWALL cornwall-living.co.uk

1. Choose the right spot for your dog When the sun is beating down, keep your four-legged friend in cool shaded places as much as you can and never leave them in the car unattended. If you must exercise them during the day then avoid hot tarmac and walk them on grass or other ground that they’ll find cool and refreshing. Nothing beats a picturesque Cornish harbour at low tide to keep those paws from overheating!

2. Groom your dog regularly to get rid of any excess hair In heat that extra hair will only be increasing your pooch’s body temperature. Fetch’s range of Furminator products make removing excess hair easy-peasy.

3. Keep your pooch hydrated at all times It sounds obvious but it’s crucial to remember whether you’re at home or out and about that your dog needs access to a fresh supply of water. The Drinkwell Pet Fountain keeps water fresh by filtering and moving it continuously, enticing your pet to drink more in the hot weather. The Animal Instinct Travel Water Bottle is the perfect way to ensure your pet stays hydrated on the go.

4. Give your dog the tools to keep cool The best way to help your pets forget about the heat is to keep them entertained. Find your pet a cool place in the shade with some toys to chew and they’ll be happy. The Hugs Hydro Ball is a great way to keep them cool; just soak the hydro ball in water, which is released through the ball’s holes as your dog chews and plays. Angela Rodger, resident vet at fetch.co.uk, says: “Your pets can’t cool themselves as easily as we can in the heat and therefore they are at higher risk of heatstroke. By the time the signs of heatstroke become apparent, the damage can already be done. Go easy on the exercise on hot days, and make sure your pet has plenty of water and shade.”

SHAGGY DOG STORY

story With scores of golden beaches, hundreds of miles of coast to explore along the South West Coast Path, and thousands of acres of rugged moorland, Cornwall is an exciting place for our four-legged friends. And after a day exploring, why not relax in one of the many dog-friendly pubs, restaurants and hotels? I couldn’t wait to smell that sea air and after a few hours watching the lights of oncoming traffic, we arrive at Trebarwith Strand near Tintagel and settle into a cosy converted barn, less than a mile from the sea. The next morning I’m let off the lead and, boy oh boy, to feel that sand under my paws is just great. It’s low tide and I dig a few holes, and test the water. There are over 50 dog-friendly beaches in Cornwall that are open all year-round, and if they’re all like this, then I don’t think I’ll want to ever go home! I’m quickly dried and, although sad to leave the beach, I can’t pass up the

chance to have lunch at the dog-friendly Port William Inn right on the beach while looking out to sea. I watch the world dart by from the car window on the way to Bodmin Moor and we stop off at St Breward, supposedly named after the man who used to brew beer for the legendary King Arthur. Discovering there is a Bronze Age building named after the great king himself just a couple of miles outside the village, we traipse across the vast open moorland to investigate as I bound around the new and interesting landscape chasing after anything that moves. ☞

We pop back to the award-winning Blisland Inn, three miles away (where I’m made really welcome and we have a bit of a rest). I take it easy in the sun while they sample a pint of Blisland Bulldog, a lovely ale especially brewed for the inn by the local Sharp’s Brewery. Back to the cottage for a slap up meal bought from Hill Top Farm Shop just outside Camelford. I have the leftovers of some very delicious Cornish recipe pork sausages which they cooked, and boy were they delicious! The next day we go to the Bodmin and Wenford Railway where, as long as I keep my paws off the seats, I’m free to ride, which seems a fair deal – although they do look like very comfy seats. I poke my nose out of the window as we make our way along the 13-mile round trip and I am overcome with all the exciting new smells! After a quick pub lunch at the Borough Arms in Dunmere, we are all set for an afternoon bike ride along a stretch of the Camel Trail. Of course, I shall be on foot but eveyone else hires bikes from Bodmin Bike and Cycle Hire and we set off towards Wenford Bridge. The going is flat and I spend a very nice couple of

DOGGIE ESSENTIALS

Doggie

Essentials

Planning a trip to Cornwall with your dog? Here’s our list of essentials. And if you’re already here, there are plenty of places to pick them up! A good pair of BoOTs

Cornwall is known for its great walks and stunning scenery. Whether a casual stroll or coastal exploration, don’t let the day be spoiled by aching feet and rubbing shoes!

A travel crate Travelling with dogs can be stressful, for both the driver and the dog. If your dog is small enough to fit in a travel crate, it’ll stop any unexpected leaps onto your lap mid journey and can also make your dog feel more secure.

Ball launcher Need we say more? Dogs love to fetch and nothing beats it in the water on a glorious Cornish day!

A warm coat For some dogs, getting wet and cold just isn’t their cup of tea. Keeping the elements at bay is a must for any dog who likes to be snug. Also, as a perk to owners, it limits the smell of wet dog! 46 Dogs Love 2015

A water pouch These are perfect when on the go. There are many varieties available, even pocket sizes and some made of fabric to fold away. They’ll quench the thirst of your dog wherever you are. Just add water!

Poop bags Dogs have a great sense of humour when it comes to leaving presents in the wrong places. Keep the county clean and keep the other people who use it and love it happy. And you can always stay stylish with a Dicky Bag too!

A sturdy lead There will be many new sights, sounds, scents and potential food when you’re out. By all means explore, but keep yourself, your dog and others in the countryside safe. A good lead is essential on the steep cliffs of coastal paths.

Dog lifejacket With more dogs taking to the water around Cornwall, a fitted lifejacket gives you peace of mind on any boat trip. Dogs can tire easily in a strong currents, even if a strong swimmer, and a lifejacket can save their life. (See page 14 for more.)

A walking guide

Every coast path has something a little different to enjoy. To get the most out of your travels, a guide can come in handy and help to prevent you from getting lost.

Get to know... Morning walkies

Lev

Some offices have a ‘bring your dog to work day’, but here at Dogs Love Cornwall Living HQ, we get to enjoy it everyday! So, without further ado, let us introduce Leven (Lev): our furry friend, who keeps everything running on track.

Lev is..

The beach. Being based in Porthleven, there are plenty of great walks to choose from. Beachcombing along the shingle in the harbour among the boats is always fun at low tide, but Lev loves heading down to the beach to get his paws wet in the sand.

Snore. When he’s not bringing us treats from the bin and generally causing pandemonium, Lev likes nothing more than curling up in his basket under the desk and catching up on some much needed rest.

lev loves..

Foraging. With long stretches of stunning beach, Cornwall is ideal for discovering a variety of edible seaweeds, and plenty of hedgerows full of ripe berries. Lev, however, prefers to rummage through the office bin. And watch where you put that half-finished pasty, if you still want it later.
