Many of us here at Cornwall Living have made the New Year’s resolution to get fitter and healthier over the coming year and what better way to start than to get out walking with your canine companion. With so much wonderful countryside and coastline to enjoy across the duchy, Cornwall is a paradise for dog owners. You’re never far from a dog-friendly beach here, so why not check out some of our favourites on page 45. If your pooch doesn’t fancy sandy paws then there are many other places to visit, including some wonderful gardens (page 42) and the ever-popular destination that is the Isles of Scilly (page 12), all just waiting to be explored. If you’re looking to holiday with your dog then over the coming pages be inspired by our great selection of places to stay along with some tasty treats at the many restaurants and cafés across the county that welcome dogs and their owners! Cornwall has an abundance of stunning beaches and gardens, perfect for exploring with well-behaved pooches. Remember though that many beaches have a seasonal dog ban from April until October. So, as a small taster, we’ve chosen just five of our favourites spread across Cornwall that are dog-friendly all year round. Some gardens require dogs to be kept on a lead.

THE scoop Ideas for you and your pooch, from puppy training to dog-friendly outings.
Every dog has its day
Sometimes, our beloved fourlegged friends need a little help to point them in the right direction. Aggression, anti-social behaviour, barking, destruction, recall problems, jumping up – just some of the common issues that many dog owners face. Enter Bark Busters, drawing upon almost three decades of experience in helping dogs and their owners enjoy a happy, safe and stressfree life together. Ben Jordan, Cornwall’s dog training and behavioural therapist, can often be found walking the countryside with his springer spaniel, Raffa.
Simply give Ben a call to arrange a one-to-one session. With a 100% success rate, doggie behavioural problems could be a thing of the past. If you’re thinking of getting a new puppy, a session with Ben is also a great way of starting the way you mean to go on, so you can get out and enjoy the great outdoors in confidence. For more information call 0808 1004071 or visit www.barkbusters.co.uk/dogtraining-cornwall
Dog walkers welcome at Porthleven’s Harbour View Café With scintillating views over Porthleven’s iconic and typically Cornish harbour, and offering freshly cooked all day breakfasts and lunches, Harbour View Café is perfect for anyone looking to refresh themselves on a day spent exploring the south coast.
Trewidden Garden
is a paradise for families with both dogs and children! One of the Great Gardens of Cornwall, Trewidden Garden nestles in an idyllic location outside Penzance and is famed for its internationally acclaimed collection of magnolias, camellias and tree ferns. A maze of paths intertwines around the collections, champion trees, the walled garden and pond, making it a fascinating visit for humans and a cool, pleasant garden for dogs. There’s also a free children’s trail for young adventurers to run ahead and explore.
Duke Street Café, you’ll find fresh, delicious meals including fresh crab and homemade soups, as well as fantastic coffee and cakes, all made using locally sourced produce.
While you’re there, be sure to pop into Trewidden Tearoom. Run by the team from Newlyn’s

Entry to the gardens costs just £7 for adults and is free for under 16s. What’s more, dogs are welcome to both the gardens and tearoom!

Managers Kizzy and Jo are already building a fantastic rapport with locals and visitors alike, especially those looking to take a load off while the dog curls up beneath the table. Indeed, the café’s Facebook page is already awash with rave reviews, with many hailing the polite, lovely staff and marking on the relaxed atmosphere. The whole menu is cooked from scratch, with plenty of delights to choose from, whatever the time of year. The café’s homemade soups, in particular, come highly recommended, as do the homemade cakes and cream teas! For more information call 07811 129501 or visit jokizpen

Mawgan Porth’s Catch Seafood Bar & Grill is really taking the area by storm. Indeed, it would seem that this dog-friendly restaurant and the dog-friendly beach have become something of a celebrity hotspot, welcoming A-listers including Minnie Driver, Robert Lindsay, Justin Lee Collins and Dawn French, as well as stars from Eastenders and Game of Thrones!
If you’d love to experience Cornwall’s great outdoors, outdoors, then Penbugle Farm has got you and your pooch covered! With its warm and comfortable Wigwams, glamping just became even more luxurious. Located in a small grass paddock behind the farmhouse, each sleeps four to five people and has electric lighting as well as a panel heater and standard UK plug sockets.
Catch!
As well as its Sunday ‘best roast on the coast’, Catch is also being recognised for its green credentials. It’s recommended by The Final Straw for plastic elimination, Padstow Lobster Hatchery for ‘buy-one-set-
campers one-free’ and Cornwall Good Seafood Guide for bringing style to unfashionable fish by using sustainable stocks and making them tastier than ever. As the team says, brill can be brilliant and cuttlefish can cut it! Catch is open for winter weekends, school holidays and all day, every day from Easter to November. For more information call 01637 860372 or visit www.catchmawganporth beach.co.uk
Each is complete with added home comforts such as a kettle, toaster and a fridge plus an outdoor picnic table and decking. These are a great all year round alternative to a hotel or B&B, letting you get right up close to nature, with it being literally right on your doorstep.

Are you
adder aware?
Dog friendly accommodation in the Cornish countryside
Also yearning for the sun to warm them up after a long winter are the adders coming out from hibernation as early as March. Regent Court Vetinary Practice sees many dogs being bitten yearly by adders as they may stand on them or just disturb them whilst they are out basking in the sun. Being venomous, adder bites need to be seen as quickly as possible. A yelp or rapid swelling can mean a bite so you should phone a vet immediately to let them know you are on your way. Keep calm, if possible carry your pet and keep them as cool as possible. Vets will administer fluids, anti-venom and pain relief until your pet is comfortably recovering. Moorland, coast paths and sand dunes are the most common places for Adders so walk early or late if you are allowing your dog off the lead.
Kilminorth is a unique and private cluster of 12 cottages set in 32 acres of unspoiled Cornish countryside, with beautifully landscaped gardens. There are large formal gardens here where you can lounge with a picnic or why not explore the wildflower meadow or private woods, carpeted with bluebells in spring? Or even enjoy a fresh apple from Kilminorth’s own orchard, all in the company of your canine companion. If you’re feeling adventurous the South West Coast Path is nearby or you can stroll down the footpath from the front gate to the local pubs in Looe. Once an ancient manor farm, the barns have been restored to provide contemporary and stylish cottage accommodation that nestle in the grounds. Brimming with Cornish character, the
cottages have everything you need for a luxuriously comfortable stay, from comfy sofas and under floor heating to power showers and wi-fi – some even have their own hot tubs for the ultimate in luxury. Onsite you will also find an outdoor heated swimming pool, tennis court and children’s play area with trampoline. You can also make Kilminorth yours for the day – perfect for a wedding, birthday or indeed any special celebration! So, whether you are looking for a holiday to remember, or a celebration that will make forever memories, Kilminorth is the ideal getaway for you and your dog. alkies. These are an intrinsic part of your pet’s life, and the bar will be set high after a holiday in the Isles of Scilly! Luckily, owners are guaranteed to enjoy Scilly walks just as much, as the islands are home to stunning coastal pathways, country lanes and dreamy dog-friendly beaches all year round! The Isles of Scilly are also renowned for spotting colonies of seals not far off the shoreline, and always when you least expect it. Snorkelling with seals and seeing these magnificent creatures in their natural environment is a unique and unforgettable experience – they often come close enough to say hello and nibble at your fins!
DID YOU KNOW? All the beaches on St Martin’s are dog friendly, all year round!

While you’re on the Isles of Scilly, Karma St Martin’s highly recommends taking a boat trip to Bishop Rock Lighthouse (recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s smallest island with a building constructed on it), with commentary from local boatmen. You’re likely to see rare wildlife and seabirds along the way, and while you’re enjoying your day trip, back at the hotel, the pet-loving Karma St Martin’s team will happily pamper your pooch while you take in the sights. Why not stroll with a picnic hamper to the fittingly named ‘Bread and Cheese Cove’ on St Martin’s island, easily one of the finest beaches on the British Isles. You’ll often find this cove’s white sands deserted, but don’t forget to pack some snacks for your four-legged friend, too!
Finally, who would be mad enough to create a canine menu especially for dogs? Karma St Martin’s of course, its ‘Kanine Menu’ having proved a huge hit! With dishes including a ‘Big Bag O’ Bones’ and ‘Royal Dogs Dinner’, your dog can enjoy a sumptuous dinner, before washing it down with ‘Pawsecco’ or ‘Bottom Sniffer Beer’. Meanwhile, you’ll be dining in Karma St Martin’s awardwinning à la carte restaurant, warming yourself by the fire pit as you watch a sensational Scilly sunset. HAPPY DOGS
for days We take a stroll with Jackie Warden – the friendly face and founder of Happy Dogs Day Care.
C
ornwall is a doggie paradise, with endless heathland, woodland, coastal paths and beaches to enjoy with your furry friend in tow. However, whether you live down here and have a busy working schedule, or are holidaying with your hound and are unable to take them on particular day trips, it can be difficult knowing what to do. Even harder is leaving them at a kennel for the day, guilty in the knowledge that you’re having a blast while they’re left waiting for you to return. This is where Jackie Warden, founder of Happy Dogs Day Care comes in. Jackie first undertook the task of setting up her own day care business around six years ago, after becoming tired of the mundane nine-to-five that she never loved. Throwing caution to the wind, she took the plunge and since, she tells us, she has never looked back. “For years, I knew I wanted to work with dogs. The problem always seemed to be that making a living from it just didn’t seem possible – I guess it’s always difficult to imagine making a fulltime living out of the things we love!”
• DOGS LOVE SPRING 2018 | 15
CL--DGS--SPRING--ED--Happy Days Dog Care--3.00.indd 3
19/03/2018 14:56
But that’s exactly what Jackie does now and after only a short time she’s been able to build a sterling reputation in the local area, attracting business from both residents and holidaymakers alike. Happy Dogs is based between Helston and Penzance in the sleepy Cornish village of Breage. All year round Jackie’s guests enjoy multiple daily walks in the fields and meadows that surround the village and when the weather allows, she takes them out onto the coastal paths and occasionally to Long Rock beach – looking out over St Michael’s Mount – where everybody, including Jackie, can enjoy the fresh sea air.
Testament to Jackie’s patience and care for her dogs are her own two spaniels, Missy and Murphy. Missy is a black cocker spaniel with endless reserves of energy and Murphy, who is the more chilled of the two (while still beating Missy to the ball on most occasions), is a springer-cocker cross, or ‘sprocker’. Jackie likens Murphy to a shadow, as wherever she is, you can bet that Murphy won’t be far away. In contrast, Jackie jokes, “if only we could strap a generator to Missy’s tail – we’d make a fortune!”
16 | DOGS LOVE SPRING 2018

19/03/2018 14:56
We meet Jackie near Helston, on a mild afternoon as she walks the day’s dogs around Loe Bar. Missy, excited to be out and about, plunges headlong into brackish hedges to our left, surfacing occasionally only to dive straight back in. Murphy, overwhelmed by the scents and smells around him, is following a trail of his own. Even though the rest of the dogs don’t belong to Jackie, it’s impressive to see how they all keep within calling distance, never straying too far, coming back when called and always with an eye firmly on the throwing stick.
Jackie tells us: “The thing I love most about this is watching them interact and socialise; I love watching their relationships change and develop. I have a steady stream of regular dogs that come in for day care, as well as boarders whose owners go away, either on business or on holiday. The regular guests soon become fast friends and now, when they arrive in the mornings and see their mates, they’re always really excited!” But it does take hard work and careful patience on Jackie’s part to earn their trust. “When a dog first comes to me it’s understandably unsure of what’s going on, or whether its owner is even coming back. But after a couple of hours, a nice walk, lots of reassurance and cuddles, they soon start to feel safe and relaxed, and it’s never long before my home becomes their home from home, too!” For Jackie, building relationships with animals is second nature and it’s in this that dog owners place their trust. What’s absolutely clear as we stroll along the side of Loe Bar is that, no matter how weird, whacky, excitable or calm, the way she interacts with the many and varied characters in her care never fails to bring out the best in man’s best friend. FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL JACKIE ON 01326 569669 OR VISIT WWW.HAPPYDOGS-DAYCARE.WEEBLY.COM AND THE FACEBOOK PAGE.

EXPLORERS We catch up with Rosita, proud owner of excitable boxer, Zenna, to discover what makes Cornwall the perfect destination for dog lovers.
W
hen Rosita and her family first met boxer Zenna, it was love at first sight. “This little girl needed rehoming and it was impossible to say no! Boxers have got to be the most affectionate, entertaining and fun breed, and there’s never a dull moment when Zenna’s around!” But excitable young pooches like Zenna – who
she sums up as “crazy, bouncy and loveable” – have a lot of energy to burn off, which helps to explain what makes Cornwall such a draw for those with a four-legged friend. “Cornwall is the best place to own a dog!” says Rosita. “The landscape is so diverse that you can mix up your dog walks with trips to the coast and dunes, as
20 | DOGS LOVE SPRING 2018
Dogs Love 18--EHM--Zenna at Boat Cove.indd 2

well as the woods and endless rolling fields.” Yet with many beaches enforcing a seasonal dog ban, and fondly trodden paths inevitably more crowded in the summer months, Rosita and her partner Tom like to venture further afield in search of new beaches to explore. After all, nothing beats having a stretch of coast all to yourselves. “With a huge array of little coves around every corner, you don’t have to go far to get away from the busy spots”, explains Rosita. “Luckily many places, such as Poldhu and Coverack, allow dogs on the beach after 7pm, however if you have a super-charged boxer then you’ll probably want to find one that welcomes them all day long!” Zenna has just about tried and tested all of the crooks and coves on the southern peninsula, and one of her favourite beaches has got to be Boat Cove. Located a stone’s throw from Perranuthnoe village, just around the corner from Marazion and the iconic St Michael’s Mount, Boat Cove offers a quiet and picturesque retreat for both dogs and their owners.

The five-minute walk down to the cove takes you along short, winding paths where you can meet the local emus, run in the grass or simply perch on a bench and soak up the scenery. “We particularly love Boat Cove because it boasts magical views of the Mount, without all the bustle of the neighbouring hotspots”, adds Tom. “Dogs can play and swim here for hours, while us owners kick back and enjoy the peaceful beauty that this unique part of the Cornish coast has to offer.” Of course, all this exploring is thirsty work (and owners need a break too!) so why not follow Rosita and Tom’s footsteps, by completing the walk with a well-earned refreshment at the nearby Victoria Inn? Muddy boots and dogs are made very welcome in the bar area and garden of this stunning 12th century Cornish Inn, home to Monty the spaniel. Offering delicious, award-winning food in a welcoming atmosphere, it’s the perfect end to your mini adventure, so you can refresh and refuel, ready to do it all again the following day!

There's no need to leave your pooch behind when eating out.
M
any of Cornwall’s best eateries also welcome four legged guests. We’ve sniffed out three of our favourites so that you can sate that seaair appetite while your furry friend curls up beneath the table.
1
THE ROCKPOOL Tucked away in the sand dunes of Godrevy, The Rockpool is quite simply a gem. Surrounded by the National Trust headland and coastal paths, it sits alongside one of Cornwall’s longest beaches, one that dogs love to sniff and bound their way along. Open from 10am until late, the café bar recently launched a tasty new menu, with outstanding coffee and homemade cake to boot, while dog bowls and biscuits

are available for your furry friends too! And, if you’re out for a sunset stroll, you may want to hang around and catch one of the many live music or arts events held in the Dune bar. FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT WWW.THEROCKPOOLBAR.CO.UK

HARBOUR LIGHTS Having been crowned ‘Independent Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year 2017’ and offering views of Falmouth harbour, the Harbour Lights team majors in top notch fish and chips, displaying a commitment to serving only the highest quality of sustainably sourced produce. Cornish fish is always on the menu, while the award-winning chips are made from the finest Cornish potatoes. Surely it couldn’t hurt to slip one or two under the table for the pooch! FRASER’S FISH AND CHIPS Whether you prefer to eat in or takeaway, the Fraser’s team is committed to sharing with you the highest quality food of its kind that you’re ever likely to find. Catering to all pets but specialising in dogs; introducing Jackie and Sharon, owners of Pooches Pet Store, Newquay.
A
fter moving to Cornwall from Bournemouth, where they owned a very successful dog training and grooming business, Sharon and Jackie opened Pooches Pet Store opposite the post office in Newquay in 2015. Sharon is a qualified trainer and continues to run one-to-one sessions in Newquay, while Jackie is a qualified groomer, having just opened a new grooming salon. Between them, they have four dogs of their own and like nothing more than walking on the beaches of Newquay and the surrounding areas, loving the fact that almost everywhere is dog friendly! They have integrated themselves into the local community, getting involved with local dog charities and attending a number of dog shows as both stall holders and judges! They also support locally made pet products, including the Cornish-made Dicky Bag – a Cornish entrepreneur’s answer to poop bags – and the Handy Halter, a training lead that’s handmade in Launceston.
Pooches Pet Store, while small, prides itself on stocking high-quality products at very competitive prices. Among others, it stocks Ezydog, Julius K9 harnesses and Dexil colour-coded safety products. In fact, the shop caters for all pets, however as you might expect, dogs are definitely a specialty. They’re always happy to give advice on anything dog related, particularly with regards to grooming and training. They also know a lot about food, and will spend a lot of time helping people decide on the best way to feed their dog. As they explain, “a lot of health and behavioural issues are caused by inappropriate feeding.” The Pooches team firmly believes in natural feeding, stocking raw food, a variety of good-quality dry and wet foods, as well as a wide selection of natural treats, including rawhide-free and wheat/gluten free. FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL 01637 498170 OR VISIT WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/POOCHESPETSTORE
DISCOVER MORE Pooches Pet Store can take orders from people visiting the area on holiday. Orders will be ready and waiting on your arrival, but the team can also deliver locally for free!!

GOODBYE TO Dog troubles could be a thing of the past with this handy how-to guide that every discerning dog owner should read.
' Editorks pic
W
e’ve all experienced it; those troubling times when our beloved pooch just won’t play ball. Sometimes this erratic behaviour can be embarrassing in public, perhaps even dangerous in some scenarios. You’ve tried the usual tricks with only short-lived success. Surely there’s a long-term solution? Enter dog behaviourist Nigel Reed, who brings 15 years’ experience working with dogs and their owners in a compelling book, The Dog Guardian: Your Guide to a Happy Well-Behaved Dog. In Nigel’s words, “The Dog Guardian is a must for any dogs owners who want to understand, communicate and care for their dog on a deeper level… The book will empower you to address any behavioural issues to become the guardian of a happy, well-behaved dog.” Nigel has developed a methodology split into four distinct areas, in turn covering your dog’s needs, language and state, and your leadership style. His book is crammed with expert, step-by-step advice on everything from issues with food and obsessive behaviours to interactions with children and other dogs. You’ll find lots of ‘added tips’ throughout as well as case studies that put the themes into context. But don’t just take our word for it. Nigel’s success has drawn the attention of several celebrities, including Evan Davis, and TV mind control expert Derren Brown, who notes: “Nigel is a real magician. He transformed our wayward and difficult dog into a delightful companion.” The book is available from Amazon, either in paperback or ebook format for your tablet. What’s more, the guide includes access to exclusive videos demonstrating Nigel’s approach in action. Nigel’s business also provides one-to-to consultation and runs online and group courses for you and your dog. We catch up with Nigel who, having grown up in Cornwall, explains what makes it the perfect
place for getting out with your pooch. “If you want to explore Cornwall with your dog, you’re spoilt for choice with its hundreds of beaches, beautiful woodlands, lakes and nature trails,” says Nigel. “Cornwall’s idyllic and calm environment makes it ideal for walks, and easy for you and your dog to relax and live in the moment.” FOR MORE DOG BEHAVIOURAL TIPS, EXPERT ADVICE AND SAMPLE VIDEOS VISIT WWW.THEDOGGUARDIAN.COM DOGS LOVE SPRING 2018 | 29

The Roseland peninsula is one of Cornwall’s hidden treasures and it is fitting then that one of the jewels in The Roseland’s foodie crown is The Hidden Hut – and it really is hidden.

e pull into the car park, on the edge of the village of Portscatho, which overlooks the bay and the golden sand of Porthcurnick beach that lies below. Both the beach and the hut are family and dog friendly. The bay is known for its safe, calm waters and dogs are allowed on the beach all day, all year round. A short stroll takes us down a gentle path, where the heady scent of gorse and bracken fills the air, leading down to the beach. Suddenly the smell in the air changes as wafts of Indian spices and warm bread mingle with sweet patisserie and heady coffee notes. What could possibly be the cause of this wonderful olfactory assault?
And then it reveals itself, nestled at the back of the beach and literally on the edge of the cliff, The Hidden Hut. The small green shed sits in perfect harmony with its surroundings and as we arrive a small queue of expectant diners is forming at the hatch. Seating is on communal wooden tables in front of the hut, with a few smaller tables dotted here and there. Our children spot some giant beanbags laid out on a grassy bank to the side and immediately headoff to stake their claim on a couple. We are more interested in the menu than the seating plan and so head to peruse the boards outside. Small, but perfectly formed The Hidden Hut offers a lunch menu that is hard to choose from, such are the delights on offer. I opt for the

special of the day, a chicken and potato curry served with warmed flatbreads and couscous. The other half can’t resist a toasted focaccia filled with roast pork, coleslaw and pickles, while our children opt for the ubiquitous Cornish pasty. The Hidden Hut isn’t licensed but you are welcome to bring your own wine or beer, which many people around us had done. We opted for lashings of organic lemonade in true Famous Five style – after all we are on an adventure! All of the food is served in recyclable paper or cardboard containers which I did wonder might detract from the taste of the food – how wrong I was. My curry was fragrant, the chicken succulent and the warm flatbread a welcome accompaniment. The pork and pickle filled focaccia was declared a similar triumph, full of flavour and incredibly juicy. And the pasties? Well, they were devoured in minutes. Small girl was unable to comment when asked for her opinion as she was too busy eating while number one son declared it: “The best pasty ever. Every time I take a bite I think yummy in my head,” and he should know, he’s sampled a lot of pasties! I should add at this point that everything is homemade from cakes to pastries, pasties to flatbreads and the meals are prepared on massive burners in an outside kitchen from which the chefs create their culinary magic. As we sit with full bellies and happy hearts the gentle murmur of happy diners in convivial surroundings makes me realise that you don’t have to have silver cutlery and linen tablecloths in order to produce high quality food – in fact sat eating from a cardboard container overlooking the bay I resolve to eat alfresco more often, it seems to heighten the sense of taste. Lunch is followed by a happy couple hours on the beach searching for cowries and basking in the sunshine. The lure of afternoon coffee and cake is too much and after a short stroll out along the cliff path we can’t help but return to sample the desserts.
I don’t have a sweet tooth but my three compadres make up for it and devour a luscious carrot cake, a light as a feather lemon drizzle finished off by a slab of flapjack that is almost as big as small girl. I am more than happy with a coffee watching the boats sail across the bay. All of the food at The Hidden Hut is available to take away and so in a bid not to end our foodie foray sooner than we have to we order humus, mackerel pate, flatbreads and olives to take home for our supper. All are delicious but the mackerel pate outstanding. We are always on the lookout for something just a little different and what we had happened upon here has instantly become one our foodie favourites. We can’t wait to return for one of The Hidden Hut’s feast nights when we shall be all grown up and take a bottle of something chilled. But shhhhhhh, don’t tell anyone we want to keep The Hidden Hut our little secret! FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT WWW.HIDDENHUT.CO.UK

DOG FRIENDLY BEACHES
Discover our selection of beaches that are free to roam all year round, including a few hidden gems that you might not know already.
D
ogs love running and playing in the sand and the surf, and when it comes to beaches in Cornwall they’re really spoilt for choice. But remember some beaches are off limits from Easter Day to 1st October. So here are some they can enjoy any time of the year.

POLPEOR COVE, THE LIZARD With an abundance of rocks and rock pools to explore, Polpeor Cove is a great place for your pup to explore. With beautiful views, common sightings of the famous Cornish Chough and regular appearances from basking sharks and grey seals, this is certainly a great place to spend an afternoon with nature. Plus there’s the added bonus of a dogfriendly café, excellent if you fancy a cup of coffee and slice of cake after a nice long walk. The beach is best accessed at mid to low tide to make the most of the beach and rock.

LOE BAR, PORTHLEVEN With access from Penrose walks, Porthleven or Chyvarloe; Loe Bar is a lovely stretch of beach to walk across or throw the ball. Although this beach is dog friendly all year round, there are warnings in place because of the dangers of the sea and Loe Pool. It is a beautiful spot, but one to be enjoyed with a bit of caution. A place of great natural beauty, the beach is perfect to visit combined with a walk through Penrose Woods, this can be started from Penrose Estate itself with a handy carpark situated at the top, or for a longer walk, from Helston, again with a carpark close by.
MAWGAN PORTH Just a few miles from Newquay and with lots of rockpools, caves and a large stream running down one side of the beach, there is no wonder this is a family favourite for exploring. Sheltered by high cliffs and blessed with golden sands and beautiful coastline, this is a fantastic spot to spend the day with your pooch. Plus there’s the added benefit of having a lifeguard in the summer months, so your pup will be glad to have a quick dip to cool off after all the running about. There are also some great pubs and restaurants in the surrounding area so you call cool off too.
GODREVY COVE, THE LIZARD Not the one near Hayle (although this is great off season too), this undiscovered beach is actually on the Lizard Peninsula near St Keverne. It’s a bit of a walk to the nearest car park, but without any cliffs to climb down, you are rewarded on arrival with a glorious beach: golden sand at all tides for the doggie to run wild on! The perfect spot to watch the sun go down with an evening picnic.

DURGAN BEACH Glendurgan, with its stunning subtropical gardens, is a must visit when in Cornwall. And nearby Durgan Beach set on the banks of the Helford River is an idyllic spot in which to relax, while your four- legged friend enjoys some beachcombing. Adventurous pooches will love scrambling over the rocks and dipping their inquisitive noses into rockpools, while energetic canines can perfect their fetching skills on the sand and shingle. Much of the land here is managed by the National Trust and there is a car park at the top of the valley. DOGS LOVE SPRING 2018 | 45

t e e M MORRIS Every day is ‘bring your dog to work day’ here at Dogs Love Cornwall Living HQ! So, let us introduce our sofawarmer Morris, who always puts a smile on everyone’s faces.
Morris is… An 11-month-old British Bulldog and an absolute cutie! He definitely has his own unique personality and is often found cuddling up with his best friend Bryher, they are inseparable in the office.
found sleeping on his back and snoring as loud as he possibly can. If you can’t see him sleeping, you can most probably hear him as he often causes a vibration through the office door!
Morris’ favourite walk…
Morris loves…
The beach. Morris loves to go for walks on the beach and in particular, he loves to try and swim in any rock pools that he finds. Porthleven’s own little dog fish.
Morris will… Sleep. When he’s not chewing the legs of the desk or the wheels of the office chairs, Morris can be
To lick! If there is an ice cream near by, he is always grateful to lick what’s left of it on the lollypop stick, it’s great for cooling him down. Also, whether you’re in shorts or jeans, Morris loves to lick legs. Anyone that enters the office will have their legs licked by him. We like to think he just wants everyone to stay clean and presentable!
Meet Morris’ best friend Bryher in the next issue of Dogs Love Cornwall Living... DOGS LOVE SPRING 2018 | 47
