Welcome
Cornwall and dogs really do go hand in hand, and whatever the weather, there are always plenty of fantastic things to see and do with your four-legged friend. To make it even easier, we’ve picked a few of our favourites. If you’re looking for beaches, you’ve come to the right place. Most allow dogs in the autumn and winter, but some do have seasonal bans, so we suggest a few that are walkable year-round, including a few hidden gems. We also suggest glorious gardens to visit and coastal walks to try, as well as some doggie essentials, including the all-important Dicky Bag! Our loveable cocker spaniel, Lev, takes a trip to the beautiful, rugged wilderness of the Isles of Scilly. We explore Boat Cove in Mounts Bay with boxer Zenna. Lottie Lewis recounts the joys of a Cornish winter with her beloved pooch, Nica. We look at five of the best things to see and do when staying at The Penventon Park Hotel, and offer tips to pamper the pooch with a little help from Toad Hall Cottages. And we meet Jackie at Happy Dogs Day Care.

Glittering white beaches seem to leave tiny pieces of silver and little diamonds shimmering on your toes and make for wonderful digging for your four-legged friend. Turquoise seas with plenty of space to run will please any dog, whether it’s a full-on swimmer, shallows galloper or timid paddler. The Isles of Scilly are an uncrowded and unspoilt archipelago with five inhabited islands and about 140 small rocky islets. The five main islands each have their own thriving small communities of farmers and fishermen (and women), artists, gardeners and food producers. There are plenty of small studios and galleries to visit and most will have a bowl of water outside for your dog, with honesty boxes to buy local produce and artefacts. You can take your dog on the boats that regularly journey between the islands – it’s part of the joy of exploring these glorious islands – locals and visitors
rub shoulders and look out for unusual birds, seals and dolphins or just exchange the latest gossip. This year we took our loveable cocker spaniel, Leven, to stay at the luxurious Karma St Martin’s hotel with its stunning sea views, helpful friendly staff and fabulous food; where the beautifully landscaped gardens lead to a beach of powder white sand, perfect for owners and their dogs. The island is tranquil and absolutely gorgeous. Arrival on the jetty saw a welcome by three of the team, who efficiently unloaded our luggage into the small van and drove it the 50 yards to the front door! The staff are charming – it felt as though we floated through the reception area to a soft brown leather armchair, welcomecocktail and a personal concierge’s guide to the hotel, dinner, breakfast, and the island. I didn’t hear a word as we sat gazing at the amazing view.

No coastal walk is complete without a pit stop in a proper traditional pub. Thankfully, we were lucky enough to stumble upon the Seven Stones Inn, a lovely stone building offering a good pint and quite possibly the best view from a pub garden anywhere in the UK – even Lev appreciated it! It was also a delight to meet Fay Page in her studio and workshop. Fay makes amazing silver charms and jewellery all inspired by the islands – worth a visit just to hear the tale of the whale on the beach and the subsequent charm she produced.

Our room was immaculate, with modern Asian influences (Karma Group’s business started in Bali and India and is spreading to Europe with plans of luxury resorts to come). With very few cars on the island, St Martin’s really is a world away from the mainland – a true doggie idyll to escape it all – where Bread and Cheese Cove, Lawrence’s Bay, Great Bay, Little Bay and Par Beach all jostle for the honour of best beach in the UK. And, you can’t visit the island without making the trek to the iconic daymark erected north east of St Martin’s in 1683 by Thomas Ekins – it’s an awe-inspiring walk, with 360-degree views across Chapel Down.

On our travels, we also passed Churchtown Farm, home to Scilly Flowers – an inspiring industry now sending 90,000 bunches of flowers to Cornwall, the UK and beyond. Call in to meet the friendly team and send a ‘wish you were here’ gift home (they will wish they were there when they see your photos!). Another favourite was Dible and Grub on Porthcressa beach, St Mary’s. Here we savoured the last taste of paradise sat with a glass of sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio, a salad, wrap or sandwich (I love the lamb souvlaki in pitta), watching the sea and wishing we could stay forever. Of course, after each day exploring, you want nothing
more than to retreat to the perfect sanctuary, and Karma St Martin’s exceeded every expectation. The hotel’s restaurant is the perfect spot to indulge in some seriously delicious food whilst watching the sun go down over Tean, one of the uninhabited islands between St Martin’s and Tresco. And, if you’re here for some rest and recuperation, then a treatment or two in the luxury spa will do just the trick. So there you are: plenty of fresh air, stunning scenery, gorgeous white sandy beaches, lots of walking, fabulous local food, peace and quiet… and you can take your favourite fourlegged friend with you. What more could you need?

COASTAL EXPLORERS
Coastal
explorers
We catch up with Rosita, proud owner of excitable boxer, Zenna, to discover what makes Cornwall the perfect destination for dog lovers. When Rosita and her family first met boxer Zenna, it was love at first sight. “This little girl needed rehoming and it was impossible to say no! Boxers have got to be the most affectionate, entertaining and fun breed, and there’s never a dull moment when Zenna’s around!”
But excitable young pooches like Zenna – who she sums up as “crazy, bouncy and loveable” – have a lot of energy to burn off, which helps to explain what makes Cornwall such a draw for those with a four-legged friend. “Cornwall is the best place to own a dog!” says Rosita.
Cnwa is e best place to own a dog! The landscape is so diverse…

“The landscape is so diverse that you can mix up your dog walks with trips to the coast and dunes, as well as the woods and endless rolling fields.” Yet with many beaches enforcing a seasonal dog ban, and fondly trodden paths inevitably more crowded in the summer months, Rosita and her partner Tom like to venture further afield in search of new beaches to explore. After all, nothing beats having a stretch of coast all to yourselves. “With a huge array of little coves around every corner, you don’t have to go far to get away from the busy spots”, explains Rosita. “Luckily many places, such as Poldhu and Coverack, allow dogs on the beach after 7pm, however if you have a super-charged boxer then you’ll probably want to find one that welcomes them all day long!” Zenna has just about tried and tested all of the crooks and coves on the southern peninsula, and one of her favourite beaches has got to be Boat Cove. Located a stone’s throw from Perranuthnoe village, just around the corner from Marazion and the iconic St Michael’s Mount, Boat Cove offers a quiet and picturesque retreat for both Images courtesy of Tom Young www.tomyoungphotography.co.uk
dogs and their owners. The five-minute walk down to the cove takes you along short, winding paths where you can meet the local emus, run in the grass or simply perch on a bench and soak up the scenery. “We particularly love Boat Cove because it boasts magical views of the Mount, without all the bustle of the neighbouring hotspots”, adds Tom. “Dogs can play and swim here for hours, while us owners kick back and enjoy the peaceful beauty that this unique part of the Cornish coast has to offer.” Of course, all this exploring is thirsty work (and owners need a break too!) so why not follow Rosita and Tom’s footsteps, by completing the walk with a well-earned refreshment at the nearby Victoria Inn? Muddy boots and dogs are made very welcome in the bar area and garden of this stunning 12th century Cornish Inn, home to Monty the spaniel. Offering delicious, award-winning food in a welcoming atmosphere, it’s the perfect end to your mini adventure, so you can refresh and refuel, ready to do it all again the following day!

Trewince Holiday Lodges Just how you imagined Cornwall to be.
Dog Friendly
For most owners the thought of leaving their dog at home just isn’t an option as they are part of the family. Not only is it more enjoyable, but also practical to take your dog away on holiday with you. At Trewince we understand this, so with many of our lodges welcoming pets it would be a real pity to leave them behind. There is no need to pay for kennels, or to ask friends or relatives to take care of them whilst you’re away. Cornwall is extremely dog friendly, with many coastal paths, woodland walks and beaches, so bringing the dog along will give you even more great reasons to get out and enjoy the coast and countryside.
About Us
Situated in the heart of the Roseland Peninsula, near to the villages of Portscatho, Gerrans and St Mawes, the Trewince Manor Estate is an oasis of beauty and calm within its 26 acres of park and woodland. We are close to tranquil beaches, secluded coves and beautiful countryside with spectacular views. We pride ourselves on our rural and peaceful location where you really can get away from the stresses of everyday life.

FROM HOME We take a stroll with Jackie Warden – the friendly face and founder of Happy Dogs Day Care. Driving down the narrow lane past the Cottage Hospital in Helston, towards Lower Nansloe Farm and Degibna Chapel, we bump into Jackie Warden – dog lover, dog owner and founder of her own doggy day care business. As she pulls open the van door, our photographer Jess is met by Missy, the lively cocker spaniel and Murphy, the energetic-yet-docile sprocker – the excitable faces of Happy Dogs Day Care.
Beginning at Degibna Chapel, Jess and Jackie begin walking behind Missy, Murphy and two of the current guests at Happy Dogs. Ambling around the trail, Jackie and her fourlegged charges regularly enjoy beautiful, dogfriendly walks through the woods and along the

That’s why I love it here!” Heading up onto the coast path, the woodland gives way to dizzy views of the sea below. With glorious glimpses of the rugged Cornish coast, moody in the haze of a misty morning, as well as unrivalled views over the Atlantic, it’s clear why Jackie loves bringing the dogs here.
Happy Dogs Day Care first began in earnest around four years ago when Jackie, tired of the mundane nine-to-five that she never loved, decided to throw caution to the wind and take the plunge. She explains, “For years, I knew I wanted to work with dogs. The problem always seemed to be that making a living from it just didn’t seem possible – it’s always difficult to imagine being able to make a full time job out of the things we love!” After only four years, Happy Dogs has built up an impressive reputation – it just goes to show how it’s never too late to follow your dream, and Cornwall provides such an opportunity for lovers of animals and the great outdoors to combine these into their livelihoods. Based between Helston and Penzance in the sleepy Cornish village of Breage and running the business from home, Jackie’s happy dogs enjoy multiple walks all year round in the surrounding fields and meadows, whatever the weather. Strolling along the coast path with the hounds regularly looking behind to make sure she’s still there, Jackie tells us what gets her up in the morning. “Like people, each dog that comes in is different – has its own personality. Some, like Murphy here, are quite happy to follow me around quietly and fetch the ball when I throw it. And some, like Missy, simply don’t stop! We could walk around here five times and still, when we got home, she’d be ready for more!”

HAPPY DOGS
As Missy plunges once again into the brackish hedges just off the footpath, Jackie continues. “The thing I enjoy most is watching the dogs interact and socialise; I love watching their relationships change and develop. I have a steady stream of regular dogs that come in for day care as well as boarders, whose owners go away on business or on holiday. The regular guests soon became fast friends and now, when they arrive in the mornings and see their mates, they’re always so excited! “Of course, when a dog first comes to me, it’s understandably unsure as to what’s going on or whether the owner is even coming back – the look on their face is sometimes heart-breaking! But after a couple of hours,
a nice walk, lots of reassurance and cuddles, they soon start to feel safe and relaxed. Of course, some dogs that have been looked after away from home before or love to play with other dogs simply come in and just get on with it; either way, my home soon becomes their home from home too!” For Jackie, building relationships with the dogs in her care is second nature and it’s in this that dog owners are able to place their trust. What’s absolutely clear when accompanying Jackie on one of her daily outings is that, no matter how weird, whacky, excitable or calm, the way she interacts with the different characters in her care always brings out the best in man’s best friend.

WHAT IS A WINTER?
WHAT IS
A WINTER? Lottie Lewis recounts the joy of winter in Cornwall, exploring the coast with her beloved dog, Nica. What is a winter? A winter is a scratchy wool jumper pulled up over your snotty nose. Your knitted hat hugging low, restraining your wind-enticed hair. Salt in your eyelashes, crying against the conditions. Rays burning through the heavy sky upon your exposed skin, chapped hands, lips. That cold sunshine warming you through layers of cotton thermals and flannel shirts and thick hoodies and padded jackets and stiff waterproofs of last year, to your long hidden, summer deprived skin. A winter is watching the rain from the driver’s seat, asking your dog – do we really want to do this? Drops hammering down on the windscreen, like birds dancing on hot tin roofs from previous travels. The wind questioning you – do you really want to do this? A winter zips your coat up to your eyes, pulls your beanie down to your lashes, doubles up your socks, pulls your laces tight. Force the door open – even the dog lacking enthusiasm over the

prospect of the storm trek you are about to embark on. But once you’re on the beach, you two alone, joined by the elements, you don’t know why you deliberated for so long. A gale force rips across your skin, still showing the faint freckles of summer, lasting blondey bits. Dog chasing the dancing foam and playful horses of the ocean. So happily lonesome. (A winter is that sudden feeling of calm when you fall back into your car, sheltered from the lashing world.) Only meeting long weathered driftwood, battered containers bearing the names of passing ships, lost overboard, hundreds of nautical miles away in rolling oceans. Leaving the sand and scaling the cliffs, you stand with your jacket open, leaning into the wind, the rain hammering down upon your red cheeks and cold nose and squinting eyes – grey as the sea writhing in front of you. Venture into the empty woodland, towering oaks sheltering you, but storing droplets that roll unexpectedly

Looking up into the green and brown sky above you, wet leaves, flasks of hot happiness in gloved hands, a hidden den to lose and find yourself. Breathe deep the sweet smell of damp pines. A winter is that sinking feeling of sadness, knowing you forgot to hang up your wetsuit. Having the knowledge that it’s bundled up in a cold, wet, sandy ball of depression in the dirty, damp boot of your car. And knowing all too well that you can complain and regret and curse yourself for your forgetfulness, but when it comes down to it, you are going to strip off in the howling winds and drilling rain and gingerly ease yourself into your neoprene shield. Damp boots on, car park dancing on the spot. Cold fingers fumble with wax, and dog in tow you jog down to the water’s edge, already experiencing the brain freeze that is imminent and unavoidable. The sea in the depths of a winter reminds you what it is to be alive. Waves crash
down upon you, so little of society reaches you, hidden, peaceful. Surrounded by movement, water. Bombing along in smooth curves, laughing, smiling, uncrowded pleasure. A winter is your salty dog curled up on your damp socks, keeping you warm, sharing your heat, as you steam by the fire, feeling safe in your loyalty, promising the same.

winter
walks The weather might look a bit gloomy but winter in Cornwall is a great time to discover the coastline with your dog. The coastal themed homes at Beach Stays sit on the edge of the golden beach of Praa Sands overlooking the Atlantic, perfect for spending hours roaming around and exploring with your pooch. Winter is a great time of year to enjoy the Cornish coast and especially for walking with your dog, as most beaches prevent dogs during the peak season. Praa Sands welcomes dogs from from October until Easter, which means you can spend plenty of time enjoying the views whilst entertaining your excitable pooch. Walk just a few metres from your Beach Stays home to the beach where your dog can jump around in the shoreline, paddle in the sea and run up and down the beach, meeting new doggie friends. Head back to the beachside home, where you and your canine can dry off and warm up next to the log burner surrounded by all the family.
Warm, modern interiors
Penrose - a woodl and
walk
As the sun rises the next day, head straight onto the beach and watch as your dog runs free with friends met the evening before. The South West Coast Path is just a stone’s throw from the garden and leads you to Prussia Cove, a nearby paradise made famous from the days of smuggling. After a long walk, head back home and stop off at the Sandbar for a quick drink and a snack before lighting the wood burner and settling in for another winter’s evening on the coast. For windy days head to nearby Penrose, a perfect woodland walk around a lake offering shelter from the coast. Beach Stays is perfectly located for exploring all the best in beaches and walks in the area for you and your dog. For more information call 01736 806166 or visit www.beachstayspraasands.co.uk

Essentials
Heading out with your pooch in Cornwall? Whether you’re on holiday or already living here, make sure your dog is set for a long walk, whatever the weather. A sturdy lead With such a varied landscape and different terrains, it’s essential to have a good lead in Cornwall so your dog can explore safely. A retracting lead will allow you to let your dog free in open space, but keep them close by on coastal walks.
Poop bags When your dog’s got to go, he’s got to go! So don’t be left embarrassed when nature calls and get a Dicky Bag; pop the bag in there and clip it on to the lead, ready to dispose of when you reach a dog poo bin. It’s washable and scented too, so no icky smells! (Turn to page 23 to discover more.)
A DOG-FRIENDLY WALKS GUIDE Whether you take the same walk every weekend or you’ve never been to Cornwall before, grab yourself a walking guide that tells you everything you need to know about the best walks for dogs in Cornwall, from where the nearest poop bin is to where the best sticks are!

PORTABLE WATER BOWL Out for the whole day? Whilst many places around Cornwall have a dog bowl outside for passing pooches, it’s always a good idea to take your own to prevent a dehydrated dog. This foldable water bowl is easy to pack away and holds half a litre of water – perfect after a long hike.
Ball ON A ROPE No walk would be complete without a toy to chase, so make it easier for yourself and get a ball on a rope – you can throw it further and no chasing it into hedges! Keep your pooch healthy by getting one that cleans teeth and gums as it’s chewed.
ALL-WEATHER DOG coat Your beloved canine might love splashing around, but they feel the weather just as we do. Get them a waterproof coat with a removable lining to keep them warm in winter and cool in summer.
Dog lifejacket Even if your dog loves the water, give yourself peace of mind when you’re out sailing around the beautiful coast with a lifejacket for your furry friend. The buoyancy will keep them above water whilst making it easier for them to play for longer – it’s a win-win! Dogs Love 2016 35

It’s not such a dog’s life when it comes to a cottage holiday with Toad Hall Cottages! A dog is more than just a pet; they are a part of the family and, for many of us, leaving them behind when we go away is not an option. After all, why bother with the trauma of kennels or overseas travel, when you could be enjoying the great Cornish countryside with a lead in one hand and an ice cream in the other? Everywhere you look, especially across the south west, there’s a visible surge in dog-friendly activities and establishments... ‘pet accepted’ signs outside restaurants, mobile dog-grooming companies and countless drinking bowls outside shops. What’s more, with the everincreasing dogcation demand, many more properties now cater for pets compared to a few years ago, not least as property owners become pleasantly surprised at how diligent pet owners are at keeping a property clean. Specialist holiday cottage letting agency Toad Hall Cottages offers 400 pet-friendly properties in the south west, having witnessed a 70% rise in four-legged visitors in the last five years.
ge Buddy and Fud
Yet, while many cottage agencies in the UK claim to be pet-friendly, in most cases this just means allowing dogs into the property. The Toad Hall Cottages team, however, goes one step further. During two seasons of the year, they send out dog-treat packs to holiday properties when families bring their pet – and why not? It’s the pooch’s holiday too! The feedback has been exceptional with hundreds of owners (and some pets) writing in to thank the company. One happy owner says: “Toby, our little cocker spaniel, says a big thank you for his yummy treats. It made him feel very welcome!” Another adds: “Very nice touch to send a goody bag for our dog. We have used various other ‘pet-friendly’ cottages but never had a gift bag before.” So, if you’re looking for the perfect getaway for you and your dog, visit the Toad Hall Cottages website for hundreds of superb pet-friendly cottages. year-round dog-friendly gardens
Four-legged visitors are welcomed with open paws in many of Cornwall’s glorious gardens. We’ve sniffed out those that are open year-round for walkies, so take our lead and get tails wagging…
Lost Gardens of Heligan There’s no limit to the amount of fun that visitors of the wagging tail and wet nose variety can have at this famous garden; canine companions on best behaviour are given a year-round welcome and have over 200 acres of beautiful grounds to explore.
They’ll discover new smells galore in the Victorian Productive and Pleasure Gardens, will love the subtropical jungle and go mad for the ancient woodland. A well-timed post-walkies nap will ensure padding paws are clear of the no-go zones for dogs: the tearoom, Stewardry, shop and plant sales areas. www.heligan.com

5 of the best
dog-friendly beaches Dogs love playing in the sand and surf, and when it comes to beaches in Cornwall they’re really spoilt for choice. But remember some beaches are off limits from Easter Day to 1st October. So here are some they can enjoy any time of year. Discover our selection of beaches that are free to roam all year round, including a few hidden gems that you might not know already.
Mawgan porth Just a few miles from Newquay on the north coast is Mawgan Porth. This stretch of golden sand that faces west is a Mecca for surfers thanks to the serious rips. But it’s also a fantastic spot for dog lovers too, with your pooch welcome all year round. Whether it’s sticks, stones or a battered old ball, dogs won’t care when they’re getting their paws wet and leaping along the shoreline in pursuit of cast-off treasure destined for their slobbery jaws. The beach is lifeguard patrolled in the summer months, so you can enjoy a paddle too, but just be careful of those waves! There are plenty of great pubs and restaurants in the surrounding area to enjoy a hearty meal afterwards.
Durgan Beach Glendurgan, with its stunning subtropical gardens, is a must visit when in Cornwall. And nearby Durgan Beach set on the banks of the Helford River is an idyllic spot in which to relax, while your fourlegged friend enjoys some beachcombing. Adventurous pooches will love scrambling over the rocks and dipping their inquisitive noses into rockpools, while energetic canines can perfect their fetching skills on the sand and shingle. Much of the land here is managed by the National Trust and there is a car park at the top of the valley.
Prussia Cove Roughly between Porthleven and Penzance on the west coast is this delightful and hidden rocky cove. The area is famed as the home of the Carters, notorious smugglers of the 18th century. Today, it’s another great spot for rockpooling and
strolling along the beach at low tide with your trusty companion. It’s also not far from Marazion overlooking St Michael’s Mount, yet another beautiful spot for walkies off-season.
Whipsiderry Beach Another great beach for getting paws sandy is Whipsiderry on the outskirts of Newquay. Despite being near the hubbub of the popular resort, it remains a hidden gem due to its lack of on site amenities and relatively tricky access down some steep steps. It’s only suitable during low tide, so check the timetables before heading off. This aside, it is well worth the visit if you’re feeling adventurous. The picturesque cove is dominated by the large island. The Sunday Times named it one of Europe’s top 20 beaches. With its expanse of inviting flat yellow sand, it’s the perfect playground for chasing gulls, catching balls and jumping in puddles.
Godrevy Cove - LIZARD Not the Godrevy near Hayle (although this is great off-season too), this undiscovered beach is actually on the Lizard Peninsula near St Keverne. It’s a bit of a walk to the nearest car park, but without any cliffs to climb down, you are rewarded on arrival with a glorious beach: golden sand at all tides for the pooch to run wild on! The perfect spot to watch the sun go down with an evening picnic.

5 of the best dog-friendly beaches to visit from St Merryn Park
Owning your own holiday home in Cornwall couldn’t be easier or more achievable, and at St Merryn Park you can take your four-legged friends with you. And with lots of fantastic facilities onsite, including a designated dog walking area, you may never want to leave your fabulous home from home. But if you do decide to venture out to one of the spectacular Cornish beaches nearby, we have a short guide to those that you can visit with your dogs all year round. St Merryn Park is just outside Padstow near the north coast, so there are plenty of beaches to choose from. All these beaches welcome dogs year round, have car parking and facilities.
1
Porthcothan Bay 2.4 miles from St Merryn Park A long sandy beach with grassy dunes backing into it; when the tide is out far enough you can walk around to Goldenburn Cove.
2
Treyarnon Bay 2.7 miles from St Merryn Park A fairly narrow but long sandy bay at low tide, Treyarnon has lots to interest all ages thanks to its surrounding rock pools. It has a natural pool which is big enough to swim in but is only accessible at low tide.
4
3
Harlyn Bay 2.8 miles from St Merryn Park This is a safe beach ideal for a family day out. There are different access points to Harlyn Bay; from the car park, from the road and from the coastal path (which may not be accessible or could be tricky at high tide).
5
Watergate Bay 8.6 miles from St Merryn Park A two-mile long sandy beach near to Newquay. Popular with families and surfers.
Constantine Bay 2.9 miles from St Merryn Park A massive stretch of sandy beach backed by sand dunes with plenty of rock pools for entertainment. A very popular surfing beach.

outdoors
Leven
Every day is ‘bring your dog to work day’ here at Dogs Love Cornwall Living HQ! So, let us introduce our assistant editor Leven (aka Lev), who keeps everyone smiling with his antics.
Lev is..
A loveable but cheeky six-year-old black cocker spaniel, with a curious nature and a heart of gold.
LEV’S favourite walk.. The beach. Being based in Porthleven, there are plenty of great walks to choose from. Beachcombing along the shingle in the harbour among the boats is always fun at low tide, but Lev loves heading down to the beach to get his paws wet in the sand.
lev will..
Time to explore!
Snore. When he’s not bringing us treats from the bin and generally causing pandemonium, Lev likes nothing more than curling up in his basket under the desk and catching up on some much needed rest.
lev loves..
Foraging. With long stretches of stunning beach, Cornwall is ideal for discovering a variety of edible seaweeds, and plenty of hedgerows full of ripe berries. Lev, however, prefers to rummage through the office bin. And watch where you put that half-finished pasty, if you still want it later.
