to Dogs Love Cornwall Living!...

For those of us who call the Duchy home, it’s dog-friendly delights are just a walkie away. However, those visiting Cornwall need not worry; the county has a wonderful selection of dog-friendly stays waiting to be discovered. We round up some of our favourites on page 12 and again on page 21. While you’re here, let us tempt your tastebuds with some delightful places to eat (page 28) and to whet your whistle (page 40) – all of which offer a wam welcome to you and your canine companion. We all know that a healthy hound is a happy hound and none more so than leading independent, Edhen Vets (page 34) who offer expert care 365 days a year. We would also like to introduce you to PAWD DRINKS (page 37), whose liquid supplements are helping the lives of many of our four-legged friends. Finally, this is the time of year when we see adders making an appearance after their winter hibernation. Be prepared for the worst with an Adder Pack (page 39) as you explore Cornwall’s coastline.

…happy reading!

raising funds for worthy cause

The Hair of the Dog exhibition by Kate Toms is coming to Padstow Gallery. Working from her studio on the Cornwall-Devon border, Kate taps into her childhood memories, love of animals and everyday observations to create engaging and amusing woollen needle felted characters.

Join the Padstow Gallery team from 30th March to meet Kate and her marvellous hounds, grab a free dog biscuit, then raise a glass along with some well-deserved funds for a charity close to the team’s hearts, The Cinnamon Trust. The exhibition runs from Saturday 30th March to Sunday 7th April.

Cornish history with a pawsome twist!

Tucked in the charming market buildings of Helston, the Museum of Cornish Life is a treasure trove of artefacts ready to whisk you away on a journey through Cornish heritage. Explore Cornish life through objects spanning domesticity, mining, education, farming, and archaeology.

You will also discover exhibits honouring Helston’s notable figures and occasions, such as Henry Trengrouse, an inventor credited with saving numerous lives at sea, and Flora Day, the town’s annual festival heralding the arrival of spring. There is also a temporary exhibition gallery, so you will see something new every time you visit.

ocated on the edge of St Ives Bay, if you’re looking for exceptional dog-friendly accommodation by the sea, then look no further than The Beachpads in Lelant. Spend your days playing in the waves, digging holes, chasing balls across the sand or enjoying one of countless nearby walks. Or why not explore nearby St Ives, with its famed cobbled streets lined with independent boutiques and galleries?

The Beachpads are brought to you with the ethos that, if the kids and hounds are happy, then the grown-ups are too. With frontline views of the sea to please adults simply wishing to sit back and relax, and acres of sand and sea for little ones and furry friends to run and play safely, these three gorgeous properties offer the ultimate in family accommodation. They can be rented individually or together for up to 22 guests, with two properties enjoying their own hot tubs and one its own enclosed heated swimming pool! It’s a special spot where families can come together to make holiday memories, and the best part is (even in the height of summer) you’ll often find that you have the beach to yourself. Nearby, golf enthusiasts will find a superb links course; water lovers can enjoy kayaking, kitesurfing, surf and SUP activities, and sea fishing

can be enjoyed almost literally from the doorstep. The South West Coast Path nearby offers a walker’s paradise with endless miles to explore in either direction, and back in the properties themselves, peaceful, light-flooded conservatories provide the ideal space for some quiet reflection.

Once home to iconic beach-scape artist, John Miller, with the area also a firm favourite of novelist Rosamunde Pilcher, who was known to love walking past the houses and who described the bay and its colours as “never the same…just perfect”, we can think of few better ways to hang your hat with your pooch in tow than at The Beachpads, Lelant.

LAND’S END Why dogs love

Experience the sights, sounds and smells that only the end of Britain’s mainland has to offer.

At the Land’s End Hotel, dogs are always welcome. In fact, the hotel prides itself on its dog friendliness, with a large number of the welcoming team owning dogs themselves. Pooches are welcome in most rooms, and the wider hotel provides a contemporary, relaxing and inviting space in which to relax after a long day spent exploring the local coastline.

And what a coastline it is! Not only can guests enjoy the always impressive and ever-changing views from the cliffs of the end of the British mainland, there are also endless miles of South West Coast Path to explore in either direction. Sennen beach is just a mile away, a beautiful walk in itself, and near the hotel you’ll find plenty of dog-friendly amenities to help while away a leisurely afternoon.

This is the case whatever time of year you choose to visit, however it’s worth noting that between October and March each year, dogs stay for free! The best part about that is that you’ll get to experience the different moods of this incredible landscape as it dons its autumn and winter cloak, with often stormy weather frothing up the seas below for a spectacle that reminds you of just how treacherous the coastline can be for sailors, even today.

Indeed, the area is rich with maritime history; you need only gaze out from the cliffs on a clear day to see Longships Lighthouse, the building of which was repeatedly petitioned for by sailors who knew all too well the dangers that lurk beneath the waves here. As if to stress the point, only a short walk along the coast can you find the wreck of the RMS Mulheim, which foundered and wrecked as recently as 2003.

Of course, pups may not be as interested as their owners in this side of Cornwall, however the walk to see such sights is replete with exciting new sounds and smells for them to soak up, and it’s fair to say that both of you will relish the home comforts that await when you return to the Land’s End Hotel.

Waggy tails in

WEST CORNWALL

We explore why dogs love this region of the Duchy, with The Cornish Way.

Surrounded on three sides by the sea, the far west of Cornwall is a paradise for you and your four-legged friend. Here are some of The Cornish Way’s top places to walk, eat and stay with your canine companion.

West Cornwall Beaches

Starting off with beaches, we head to Gwenver, one of west Cornwall’s finest. Dog friendly all year round, it offers golden sand, amazing surf and sunsets across the ocean. Portheras is another, and remains one of the far west’s lesser-known spots. A glorious sandy cove just past Pendeen, it comes highly recommended for four-legged explorers!

Places to eat

For the team at The Cornish Way, it’s hard to beat kicking off your wellies after a walk and enjoying the fine food on offer at The Gurnard’s Head. Set in a dramatic clifftop location between St Ives and St Just, here you’ll find food strong and spirited in flavour, cooked beautifully, with ingredients sourced from Cornwall’s natural larder.

The Dog and Rabbit is another favourite, a hidden gem of a café in St Just that offers sublime coffee, delicious lunches, and which, crucially, loves to welcome dogs!

Dog-friendly stays

With over 85% of their properties being dog friendly, The Cornish Way team understand the importance of bringing your pooch on holiday to Cornwall with you. More than that, they recognise that just because you’re travelling with four-legged family members, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice on the luxury touches and home comforts that the modern guest has come to expect.

With this in mind, they recommend Hendra Cottage, a stunning home set high above the coast path between Sennen and the Cot Valley. Here you can enjoy a wood-fired hot tub overlooking the ocean, before retreating to coastal comfort whilst your pooch curls up after a long day of seaside walkies.

Alternatively, Thimble Cottage lies in a tucked-away position in Trewellard between St Just and Pendeen. This gorgeous little cottage boasts a wonderful inglenook for your dog to curl up in front of after a day spent bracing the Cornish elements.

Cuisine and CANINE COMPANY

Since opening back in 2014, The Rising Sun in Truro has always welcomed dogs. And why wouldn’t it?

Hfour-legged visitors, and you can tell how excited

amish (pictured) is The Rising Sun Truro’s own canine resident. A Hungarian Vizsla, he works mostly front of house, greeting guests with his signature excitability and welcoming tips in the form of treats and a fuss. He also looks forward to greeting fellow four-legged visitors, and you can tell how excited he is when other dogs come to visit by his characteristic, full-body tail wag.

In fact, there is typically always company for Hamish in the pub, found either at the bar eyeing up the treat jar, snoozing under a table, or curled up in front of the log burner. In the summer, you may find them playing together outside in the courtyard garden, where there’s plenty of shade for them to escape the heat. Despite its city location, The Rising Sun feels very much like a rural neighbourhood pub, its ‘in the country’ feel proving to be a firm favourite among locals and their furry friends.

What’s more, as an award-winning dining pub, it’s one of Cornwall’s must-visit foodie spots, heralded by the Taste of the West Awards for its “fantastic and creative food” that blends textures and flavours to satisfy even the most discerning of palates. Dedicated local producers and suppliers go hand in hand with chef patron Tom’s skills in the kitchen. While the restaurant itself is pooch-free, let the team know if you’ll be bringing your dog along and they’ll set aside a table in one of the bar areas for you.

So, if your pooch is looking for good company whilst you enjoy some of our cathedral city’s finest food, be sure to pencil in a trip to The Rising Sun!

ACCESSORIES

Spring-time essentials for Cornish canine explorers.

1CANINE COLLARS

If your pooch’s collar has seen better days, its condition having been worsened after such a long and dreary winter, then a stand-out Rebel Collar from DWAM is sure to help. Alternatively, opt for the Brown Teddy, arguably the most comfortable collar in the world. Finished with a soft teddy fabric inside, it’s super soft but robust enough to stand up to the life of any four-legged explorer.

3SLICKERS SLINGS

2REX SPECS DOG GOGGLES

Running around Cornwall’s coast and countryside sure is fun! What isn’t quite so appealing, however, is the thought of scratching your pooch’s eye on the undergrowth. This is where Rex Specs Dog Goggles, designed for the active dog, come in. Stable and secure whilst allowing for full jaw motion and field of view, these specs will protect your best canine friend’s eyes from environmental hazards, as well as harmful sun rays.

As much as we love exploring the county with our dogs, those with little legs or older friends who don’t have the energy that they used to can sometimes struggle to keep up. Fortunately, Slickers Slings provide the perfect solution, enabling you to carry your best canine friend and allow them to continue enjoying Cornwall’s great outdoors.

4 GROOMING ESSENTIALS

As you spend more time outdoors, grooming is essential! Fortunately Slickers Doghouse has a full range of shampoos, conditioners and purpose-made brushes that will help you keep your dog’s coat both looking and smelling fresh.

5DWAM DOG LEASH

For dog walks through fields with livestock, along the coast path, by rough seas or on beaches with dog bans, it pays to keep your dog secure with a leash. Fortunately, with the DWAM dog leash, you can do so without cramping your canine’s style. Produced in a sun-shiny yellow, it’s just what you need to brighten those Cornish walks after such a grey winter.

Em-bark on an adventure through dog-friendly Cornwall with Bodmin Railway.

With links to all-year-round dog-friendly walking sites, a day out with Bodmin Railway is an exciting way to spend time for humans and hounds alike.

Boscarne Station, for example, sits adjacent to the Camel Trail, meaning you can hop off the train and dive straight into your morning or afternoon walkies! Alternatively, from Bodmin Parkway, why not take the 1.75-mile walk through the Cornish countryside, along a riverside footpath towards Lanhydrock house and gardens?

If the sun’s shining (and even if it’s not), your furry pal can get their paws on a doggy ice cream tub from Marshfield Farm at the railway’s 1950’s station, and with various flavours to choose from, there’s a holiday treat for all family members.

Whilst you’re there, be sure to also pop into the gift shop for any last-minute doggy items, whether you forgot to bring a water bowl or poop bags, or

think your pooch would suit one of the range of bandana collars.

To ride the railway together, there’s only a small fee for doggy tickets, and they’re welcome on all of the railway’s everyday trains, with the exception of event trains and those running over Christmas. In fact, provided your friend is kept on a lead and abides by the railway’s ‘Paws on Floors’ policy once aboard, they’re sure to have a fantastic time watching the countryside roll by.

Fun for all of the family, with volunteers on hand usually carrying treats in their pockets (for dogs only!), what better way to spend a day in Cornwall exploring the surrounding countryside with your furry friend than with Bodmin Railway?

It contains organic ingredients including ginger and devil’s claw root to naturally support joint mobility.

Another is PAWD DRINKS Calming. Studies suggest that up to 70% of dogs exhibit anxiety-related behaviours at some point in their lives. This can be in the form of separation, social,

Prepared for

THE WORST

With adder bites in dogs all too common around the coast here in Cornwall, it pays to be prepared with an Adder Pack.

Many owners are unaware of the ever-present danger their dog is in during the average walk, especially along Cornwall’s coastline. Adder bites happen and are an emergency situation that needs addressing immediately.

With Adder bites in dogs on the rise, it could pay to be prepared whenever out walking with your dog. All adder bites require urgent veterinary treatment, but your immediate actions, should the worst happen, can make all the difference to your dog's recovery. The Adder Pack exists to help you administer the correct first aid to your dog in the event of an adder bite before you can get to a veterinary surgery.

The pack will provide you with all the necessary information and equipment needed to administer this immediate first aid. There is also a clear and concise ‘What To Do’ guide to help you through the period between the time of the bite and your arrival at the vets.

For convenience, everything you need is neatly tucked away in the pack which will easily fit in

your rucksack. Carry it with you whenever you’re walking your dog for peace of mind that you have the knowledge and ability to do what is needed for your furry friend if the worst should happen. The pack contents includes an emergency contact details card, a snake identification aid, bells for your dog's collar, an instant ice pack and saline pod, along with other aids.

The Adder Pack is a kit that every dog owner should have, but one that they’ll hopefully never need. Even if you don’t own a dog yourself, an Adder Pack would make a great gift for a friend or loved one who loves exploring with their pooch, as surely nothing can be better than the gift of peace of mind.
