Dogs love Harbour View Café
25 years of saving Cornish animals
Popular with locals and visitors alike, the Harbour View Café is situated right next to the South West Coast Path in the heart of Porthleven. Offering freshly cooked all-day breakfasts as well as lunches, the whole menu is cooked from scratch, catering for vegans, gluten allergies and vegetarians.
RSPCA Cornwall is an independent charity working under the umbrella of the national RSPCA. Having rehomed 267 unwanted dogs, cats and small animals in 2020, it has also provided subsidised cat neutering and assistance with vet bills for Cornish residents on means-tested benefits.
We did a little digging and found this review from one happy customer: “We’ve been there three days running, they make the best mug of tea! Today we had brunch, toastie and chips, full breakfast, all really nice. he staff are friendly and efficient, our whippet loves it there and goes straight to the dog biscuit jar!”
Now, after 25 years of rescuing animals, RSPCA Cornwall Branch has launched a new facility for dog owners. ‘Coopers Field’ is a secure dog paddock at the RSPCA Rehoming Centre near St Columb, available for public hire. With bookings available via the website (rspcacornwall.org.uk), all money raised from the field hire will directly support the branch’s animal welfare work in Cornwall.
So there you have it! If you’re out and about near Porthleven with your furry friend in tow, be sure to stop by Harbour View Café!
RSPCA Cornwall Branch also welcomes volunteers in various roles, including animal fosterers, so if you can help, why not get in touch?

DOGS
The importance
of 24-hour care It always pays to think about what might happen to your pet in an out-of-hours emergency, be that at night or during the weekend. It makes sense, therefore, to find a surgery that covers out-of-hours care, so that you have peace of mind that whatever happens, and whenever it occurs, your pet will be well looked after. It’s also worth bearing in mind whether the surgery you’re registered with provides 24-hour nursing care, so that your poorly pet isn’t left frightened and alone. Kernow Vets is one example of a veterinary team in Cornwall that provides the assurance of round-the-clock care, meaning that whether you’re home or away, you’ll be able to rest assured that they’ll be there for you and your pet. Dedicated and professional, Kernow Vets offer animal owners a comprehensive service, and with a Pet Health Club that covers everything you’re likely to need, from a free micro chip and twice-yearly health checks, to a monthly worming plan and much, much more, it’s well worth giving the team a call and guaranteeing you and your pet’s future peace of mind.
A warm
waggy welcome In prime position to explore this stunning area of Cornwall, Polurrian on the Lizard is conveniently dog friendly, so no one has to be left behind. It boasts 12 acres of mature gardens, which are perfect for your four-legged friends to explore (with their owners of course!), not to mention that from the hotel grounds guests can enjoy walking the South West Coast Path, leading to Mullion Cove to the south and Poldhu to the west. Right on the doorstep you’ll also find olurrian ove, the hotel’s very own sandy beach and stunning landscape. Exploring the local area and attractions is a must, and many local businesses welcome waggy tails. The beach is dog friendly, however a seasonal ban is in place from 1st July until 31st August between 10am to 6pm, but this restriction won’t stop you enjoying yourselves, and experiencing the incredible sunsets.
For more information call 01208 872254 or visit www.kernowvetgroup.com
Dogs are welcomed to the Polurrian with open arms, both in the hotel and in the luxurious self-catering villas, which give guests the freedom to do what they want with the benefit of using the hotel’s facilities.
The hotel location is perfectly suited to explore the amazing landscape of the Lizard peninsula and why not take a walk around Lizard Point – located just a few miles away and the most southerly place in Britain. Then after your day’s adventures, sit back in the hotel Vista with its panoramic sea views whilst enjoying a tipple from the bar, or a laid-back meal created using the best local ingredients. A stay at the Polurrian can be as adventurous or chilled as you wish, and with a spa, pools and health club, the whole family can enjoy a well-deserved break. Keep a beady eye out on the hotel’s website for their Paws Break offers. But be quick, you won’t want to miss out. For more information call 01326 240421 or visit www.polurrianhotel.com

There is also a whole host of walks to enjoy along the Roseland Heritage Coast thanks to the South West Coast Path, but one of our favourites has to be from Heligan to Mevagissey. Following the path of a pre-historic tin stream, the route passes through the Pentewan Valley and by a medieval settlement associated with the Lost Gardens of eligan, before reaching the pictures ue fishing village of Mevagissey. And if all that walking has worked up an appetite then there are plenty of dog-friendly pubs nearby, including the Harbour Tavern, The Fountain Inn, he Sharksfin and he Ship nn. Slickers Doghouse continues to evolve.
H
aving nurtured a sterling reputation in just a few short years as the place to go for dog owners who want only the very best for their four-legged friends, Slickers Doghouse in Padstow is forever adding to its offering. Even throughout the recent lockdown, Slickers owner, Lisa Hope, has been fervently working away, and now that Cornwall looks set to re-open for the summer season, we’re excited to hear what she’s been up to. Firstly, Lisa tells us that there are lots of new products now on the Slickers Doghouse shelves. These include one of the most recent additions, the SlickerShield (pictured). These ultra-strong, nontoxic silicone shields are designed to slip over the business end of your lead, and are perfect for pups who like to chew, keeping them safe and saving the expense of having to purchase replacement, un-chewed leads. But that’s not all. Padstow is known around the UK as one of the top foodie towns for humans, and now, thanks to the release of Slickers’ Goats Milk Doggy Ice Cream, it’s a dining destination for dogs too vailable in a number of tempting avours, including peanut butter, and honey and banana, this is sure to be a big hit. Finally, and perhaps most impressively, we learn that Slickers has a brand-new warehouse, where click and collect is now available, meaning you needn’t battle your way into town. As demand increases for the stable of products that Lisa and the team have become known for, and as they branch out and look to offer customers access to a wider variety of larger products, including doggie strollers (also pictured), the new warehouse space means that for anybody in need of anything for their pooch, Slickers Doghouse is most certainly the place to go! OF THE BEST
DOG-FRIENDLY BEACHES Cornwall is paradise for humans and hounds alike.
F
or people, the ability to explore and simply soak in the sights of the coast is the dream way to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. For dogs, a trip along the Cornish shoreline is a vibrant, sensorial experience, and there are few, if any, fourlegged friends who won't relish the chance to pay a visit to one of our eight favourite dog-friendly beaches!

Thomas Tolkien CC
HOLYWELL BAY Obscured on your approach by sweeping sand dunes, only once you’ve walked almost onto the beach itself do you realise just how long it is. Stretching for almost a mile, local lore has it that the name ‘Holywell’ derives from a cave at the beach’s northern end, where unusual rock formations create a series of basins. However it got its name, this family friendly beach on the north coast – only a short drive from Newquay – is a delight for families looking for a bucket and spade day by the sea.

LONGROCK With the iconic St Michael’s Mount as a backdrop, the sand and pebbles of Longrock is favoured with Penzance locals, being the most easily accessible stretch of sand near the town. The Marazion side is popular with bathers, thanks to clear, shallow waters; Longrock side is one of the county’s few year-round dog-friendly beaches, offering furry friends the perfect arena in which to bound, sniff and roll out all of that excess energy.

DAYMER BAY Neighboured by Rock and Polzeath, Daymer Bay enjoys a more secluded feel; its golden sands, combined with the clear waters of the Camel Estuary, invite dreamy afternoons spent swimming and sunbathing. In fact, the beach was mentioned in the Marine Conservation Society Good Beach Guide, recommended for its excellent water quality! When the tide’s out, an incredible expanse of sand is revealed, perfect for a good old fashioned game of fetch.

MULLION COVE Whilst, at high tide, there isn’t much of a beach, this is both a stunning and unusual location for a seaside dog walk. As the water goes out, a good-sized area of shingly sand reveals itself, and with a series of islands jutting out of the water just offshore, plus the dramatic cliffs spanning away from you on either side, you’re reminded of the fascinating geology that defines the i ard peninsula. n fact, the largest island you can see offshore is the result of volcanic activity and, along with the cliffs either side, are a well-known site for breeding seabirds. To continue your walk, amble up the cliffs on either side, and when you reach the top, if the climb hasn’t left you breathless, the dramatic views surely will.
-NC-N Mark Price CC BY
PERRANPORTH At low tide, Perranporth and the neighbouring sands of Penhale combine to form one of the north coast’s largest stretches of unbroken beach. The possibilities this represents for dog walkers are obvious and the best part is that canines are allowed all year round, however do bear in mind that between July and August, 9am to 5pm, dogs must be kept on leads. A bonus of a trip to Perranporth is the Watering Hole (thewateringhole.co.uk) – the UK's only bar on the beach – perfect for grabbing a pint of your favourite Cornish beer, with a menu full of tasty treats to help you refuel before continuing your day’s adventure.

PORTH JOKE With Crantock beach to the north and Holywell Bay to the south, Porth Joke (also known as ‘Polly Joke’) is an unspoiled stretch of sand backing into a shallow valley with a stream running down. Dog friendly all year round, at low tide, there’s lots of room for humans and hounds alike to explore, and being a 15-minute walk from the small National Trust car park at West Pentire, you’ll often find this beach is a haven of tranquillity, even on the busiest of summer days!

MAWGAN PORTH Four miles from Newquay, Mawgan Porth benefits from the same golden sands and beautiful coastline that make the town so popular, yet remains a haven for those hoping to escape the crowds. Kids will love the array of rockpools, caves, and the stream running down the south side of the beach, and so will dogs! On hand is everything you might expect from one of the north coast’s best beaches, including disabled access, seasonal lifeguard cover, plus exceptional food from Catch Seafood Bar & Grill (catchmawganporthbeach.co.uk) – a superb beachside restaurant serving coastal inspired dishes with exceptional coastal views.
Andrew Bone
MEXICO TOWANS Backed by high sand dunes, Mexico Towans can be found in the middle of Hayle’s famed ‘three miles of golden sand’. The walk down is exhilarating, but the return journey up the deep and steep dunes is something of a slog. That said, it’s well worth the effort, and dogs absolutely love bounding free along the waterline here. At the top of the dunes, in the Sandy Acres car park, there is a small café in a shipping container – perfect for grabbing an ‘apres surf’ coffee, or a well-deserved bite to eat after the return climb from the beach.

hether you live down here and have a busy working schedule, or are enjoying a long-awaited Cornish holiday and unable to take your dog to particular ‘human only’ attractions, it can be difficult knowing what to do. What’s more, the thought of leaving man’s best friend at a kennel for the day whilst you’re out having the best of times can often be too much to bear. This is where Happy Dogs Day Care and Boarding comes in.
Jackie Warden, Happy Dogs founder, took the plunge to set up the business around nine years ago, being tired of the mundane nine-to-five that she’d never loved. She tells us: “I’ve never looked back. For years, I knew I wanted to work with dogs. The problem always seemed to be that making a living from it just didn’t seem possible. I guess it’s always difficult to imagine making a full-time living out of the things we love!”

DOGS Happy Dogs has nurtured a sterling reputation among locals and holidaymakers alike who want to ensure that their furry friends are placed in the ultimate Cornish canine care. It could be that you’re taking a day trip, or that you’re off on holiday and need a boarding service to take care of your favourite pooch. Whichever it is, Jackie does it all, taking her four-legged guests on multiple walks every day, throughout the year. In fact, whether it’s down to Longrock beach looking out to St Michael’s Mount, or in the fields and meadows surrounding Breage, it’s a fair assumption that in Jackie’s care, your hound will be having a more adventurous time than you! “The thing I love about my job is watching the dogs interact and socialise,” Jackie explains. “Their relationships change and develop – I have a steady stream of regular dogs that come in for day care, as well as boarders whose owners go away. The regular guests soon become fast friends and now, when they arrive in the mornings and see their mates, they’re always really excited!”
But it takes hard work and careful patience on Jackie’s part to earn their trust. “When a dog first comes to me it’s understandably unsure of what’s going on, or whether its owner is even coming back. But after a couple of hours, a nice walk, lots of reassurance and cuddles, they soon start to feel safe and relaxed. It’s never long before my home becomes their home from home, too.” For Jackie, building relationships with animals is not only a passion, but second nature, something in which regular clients have found themselves able to place their trust. It seems that no matter how weird, whacky, excitable or calm her waggy-tailed guests are, the way in which she interacts with the many and varied characters in her care never fails to bring out the best in man’s best friend. THE CORNISH SEAL SANCTUARY
At the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, dogs on leads are very welcome! The team only asks that all vaccinations are up to date. There are only a few areas where dogs aren’t permitted – the Seal Hospital and the Café – however there is outdoor seating so that you can grab a bite whilst your dog curls up beneath the table. With 42 acres of land to enjoy, including woodlands, there is lots to excite humans and hounds alike at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. Dogs are welcomed with treats at the reception, and you’ll find a great selection of local, homemade treats in the gift shop. Add to this an annual Fun Dog Show where everybody is welcome to join in, and this has to be one of the top dog-friendly attractions in the county!

EDEN PROJECT
What would a trip to Cornwall be without a visit to the Eden Project? Due to open once again on 17th May (subject to the latest government guidance) dogs on leads are more than welcome to explore the trails that surround the iconic biomes, however they are not permitted in most indoor areas. That shouldn’t matter if you’re travelling as a group though, and with so many sights, sounds and smells for them to enjoy outside, there’s no reason why your dog won’t enjoy a day out at Eden as much as you.

PENDENNIS CASTLE
Set on a headland with breathtaking views out to sea, Pendennis Castle has defended Cornwall since Tudor times, and played a vital role during the two World Wars. Today, visitors can experience the sights and sounds of battle, and climb to the top of the keep to scan the horizon for enemies. The best part, is that all dogs on a lead are welcome, including inside the buildings and around the grounds. There is also outside seating at the café, perfect for grabbing a lunchtime bite.

OF THE BEST DOG-FRIENDLY WALKS ALONG THE SOUTH WEST COAST PATH
Holywell Bay
Taken from the South West Coast Path website and covering the entire county, here are five of our favourite coastal walks for you and your pooch this spring and summer. To find out more and for the full routes, visit www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk

HOLYWELL AND KELSEY HEAD (NORTH CORNWALL) This varied 3.7 mile walk takes in sand dunes, an Iron Age cliff castle and maritime heathland. In spring and summer, Polly Joke beach is full of wild owers, and in autumn birds of prey are attracted by the gathering ocks of migrant birds, sometimes including hen harriers and merlins. Polly Joke and Holywell are dog friendly, making this the perfect walk for those hoping to visit the sands of these much-loved beaches.

PERRANUTHNOE FROM MARAZION SEAFRONT (WEST CORNWALL) A one-way, 3.2 mile walk to the Victoria Inn in Perranuthnoe, dating back to the 12th century and said to be the one of the oldest recorded inns in Cornwall. After making its way through the picturesque streets of Marazion, with its galleries, gift shops and tearooms, the South West Coast Path pulls out around the edge of Mount’s Bay, past the old mine workings at Trenow, whose enormous cylinder engine prompted a state visit from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

CREMYLL FERRY TO KINGSAND AND CAWSAND (SOUTH-EAST CORNWALL) A walk along a very unusual section of the South West Coast Path, passing mainly through parkland with stunning views across Plymouth Sound and a wealth of historical interest. Children will love to ramble through the grounds of Mount Edgcumbe, with its many fascinating features, and will enjoy the beach at Kingsand. An especially inspiring walk in early spring, when the National Camellia Collection is in full bloom, and in autumn, when the leaves in the woodland start to turn. This walk is particularly good for dogs as it passes a beach and pubs where dogs are welcome.
ST ANTHONY HEAD AND PLACE (SOUTH-EAST CORNWALL) This circular walk of either 4.5 or 6 miles can be started from the ferry landing stage at Place. Alternatively you can start from the car park at St Anthony Head. Whichever alternative you take, there are magnificent views as well as plenty of historical and wildlife interest to enjoy along the way. An especially good walk in autumn, when large ocks of many species of gull can be seen over the water. Children will enjoy the lighthouse and wartime features, and the hidden beaches at Porthbeor.
5
BUDE – COAST & CANAL (NORTH CORNWALL) The walk takes in the coast path with lovely sea views, before turning inland across farmland to join the canal towpath back to Bude. An excellent walk for children – if the weather’s good take a picnic and watch the boats and kayaks on the canal – or why not hire one yourself and take your picnic upstream fine route in spring, when there are ducklings and even cygnets on the canal, the hedges are full of primroses and celandines and warblers sing in the blossom-covered bushes. It is good in autumn too, when pipits and buntings find rich pickings in the stubble of the newly-harvested fields.
