Welcome

From the Editor to the latest edition of Cornwall Living!

It's at this time of year that we look forward to artists, makers and creators opening their studio spaces across Cornwall during Open Studios week, which runs from 25th May to 2nd June 2024. This is a wonderful period of collaboration where visitors have the opportunity to see their favourite artists in their workspaces, sharing where and how they work. For artists, it is a time of connection; a unique opportunity to forge in-person relationships with those who enjoy and follow their work. Jilly Easterby joins us this issue (from page 17), to take a deep dive into the work of one such creative, ceramicist Julia Crimmen. In addition, Jilly draws our attention to five other talented and diverse artists who will be participating in the event.

In keeping with our creative theme this month, we explore the work of some of Cornwall's leading artists. We are delighted to introduce Jamie Medlin (page 65), whose photorealistic oil paintings of yachts and seascapes are quite simply breathtaking. Why not take some time to visit Porthleven this month, whose buoyant art scene makes it a must-visit for those looking for creative inspiration. Customs House Gallery (page 69) is carefully curated by husband-and-wifeteam John and Louise, and is a veritable harbourside treasure trove of paintings, ceramics, sculpture, glass, jewellery and textiles. Just a few doors along, Waves Surf Art Gallery (page 74) displays owner Mike Lacey's incredible surf and wave photographic art. Take home a print or commission one of his amazing bespoke splashbacks for your home; the choice is yours. Venture along Fore Street and you will be rewarded with Andrew Giddens' latest exhibition at Cornish Art. Trenow will be made up of a new body of work that depicts Andre's local beach overlooking Mount's Bay in a raw and moving depiction of the sea and runs for four weeks from March 30th.

We also take a look at the forthcoming 2024 Cornwall Home and Garden Show (from page 33). Now in its 13th year, this is the place to be if you are looking to renovate, revamp or rebuild your existing home, or are embarking on building your first property. There will be over 120 architectural, garden and interior experts exhibiting, alongside renewable energy options and the ever-popular A Bite of Cornwall and Homeware markets. There will be pre-bookable event seminars taking part throughout the weekend at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre near Wadebridge which, along with general admission tickets, can be purchased by visiting cornwallhomeshow.co.uk.

With so much going on this spring, let Cornwall Living be your guide.

...happy reading!

Trevena Cross set to open new bistro

The Palm Tree Bistro at Trevena Cross in Breage is set to open its doors this month. After extensive refurbishment and a brandnew kitchen extension, the team are excited to welcome visitors back to the heart of the garden centre, set in stunning surroundings.

Head Chef Dave and Sous Chef Ricky have an extensive background in the gastro-scene and are excited to be at the helm of the brand-new kitchen, leading a talented, passionate team of chefs responsible for preparing a menu of delicious, locally sourced, homemade food. “Our aim is to celebrate wonderful local ingredients, with as much as we can sourced on our doorstep from incredible Cornish suppliers,” says Dave. “We want to offer simple food done as well as it possibly can be, showing off the wonderful produce this county has to offer”. Some of the kitchen’s ingredients really will be sourced on the bistro’s doorstep too, from the nursery at Trevena Cross. The team

will be able to hand pick veg and herbs daily, then step into the kitchen to prepare them in the day’s dishes, highlighting the bistro’s connection to Trevena Cross as growers first and foremost, growing more than 90% of their own plant stocks. The new inviting bistro will offer a relaxed, comfortable indoor dining space and additional covered seating outside, perfect for losing an hour or two on a warm spring day! Whatever the weather, visitors will feel connected to nature, surrounded by plants. The changing, seasonal menu will have plenty of favourites and, of course, it goes without saying that excellent coffee and irresistible cakes will always be available to satisfy any caffeine or sweet craving!

Located in Helston’s historic market buildings, this fascinating museum tells the story of Cornish life. Within this vast space, you’ll discover a rich collection of Cornish artefacts, covering aspects such as domestic life, mining, education, farming, and archaeology.

Some of the museum’s best features revolve around the captivating stories it showcases.

Discover Henry Trengrouse, whose harrowing experience witnessing the sinking of the HMS Anson led him to invent a rocket powered life-saving apparatus. Or, Granny Boswell, Helston’s renowned wise woman and fortune teller.

The best part is that admission to the museum is entirely free!

Famed for its leisurely walks along the creek as it meanders its way through the village, Mylor Bridge is also home to the Lemon Arms. Spend a day exploring the amazing riverside and rural walks along the Fal River, before stopping by the Lemon Arms and refuelling.

The team here have built a reputation for a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The chefs provide a seasonally changing food menu that’s outstanding value for money and one which really celebrates the depth and quality of the region’s amazing produce. The front of house team is always happy to help you find your perfect tipple from the bar. Down on the farm

Tregullas is the most southerly farm on the UK mainland. Family run, the grass-fed sheep and beef suckler herd thrive on the lush pastures which are kissed by the sea breezes and overlook the ocean. The family also run a thriving farm shop selling their own meat, vegetables and lots of local groceries. You can even pick up your daily newspapers or a magazine alongside your farm favourites before stopping off at their delightful traditional tearoom for a light lunch or a Cornish cream tea.

The family has been very busy over the last year, working on utilising their wool crop. Wool is a fabulous sustainable product, but trading raw fleeces has become uneconomical in the current climate. Innovative as ever, Tregullas now have

Pulling on the threads of connection

Whether it’s the colourful forms of a boat against nature’s backdrop or the play of textures in quaint harbours, Chloe loves to paint bold compositions in vibrant colours that complement modern interiors. Her paintings often find their way into the homes of boat owners, where they evoke memories of adventure, nostalgia and the communities of Cornwall.

Using acrylic and mixed media on wooden panel, ‘Threads of Connection’ (pictured) captures four colourful boats tethered together in Coverack Harbour. The piece hangs in the home of one of the boat’s former owners and brings

back wonderful memories of time spent growing up in Coverack.

To meet Chloe and to see her work in person, visit Coast Colour Canvas Gallery at Roskilly’s Farm from 1st June 2024.

Where better to be than Cornwall when the countryside wakes from its winter slumber and resounds with bright and breezy birdsong; when buds burst, bulbs pop with spring colour and the pull of the tide cannot be denied?

Spring is also a time for sprucing up, turning out and new beginnings as hundreds of Cornish creatives prepare to throw open the doors of their studios and workshops to showcase their artistry, reveal their processes and share their experiences through Open Studios Cornwall, which runs from Saturday 25th May to Sunday 2nd June.

This event heralds a cultural awakening too as we select which curious spaces in beautiful places to visit, follow the distinctive orange Os that lead us to them, immerse ourselves in the spectrum of genres – from painting, pottery and printmaking to weaving and woodturning – and be inspired by the ideas that underpin them. It enables us to meet the participants and hear their stories, purchase original, affordable art and design, and embrace the power of creativity to raise our spirits.

I use a white stoneware clay with a beautiful fleck that shines through; stencils and wax to build up pattern and texture..

And that is precisely what ceramicist, Julia Crimmen, delivers in abundance: creative Cornish coastal cheer.

What she creates with her hands, with patience, passion and precision, quite simply makes you smile. Whether it is her thrown pots peppered with polka dots; the spots and stripes of her contemporary stoneware mugs, or the quirky bird sculptures that she permeates with personality, Julia captures quintessential Cornwall in her exuberant homeware and chirpy collectibles.

Working from her garden studio in Porkellis, Julia designs and makes wheel-thrown porcelain and stoneware ceramics that offer stylish functionality, and imbues them with the blue hues and natural neutrals of her rural surroundings.

“I use a white stoneware clay with a beautiful fleck that shines through; stencils and wax to build up pattern and texture, and rich, glossy glazes to enhance those details,” explains Julia of her technique. “I decorate by hand with dots and dashes in gold and indigo, or, in the case of porcelain, embellish with botanical imprints, to evoke my love of the Cornish coast and the hedgerows of home.”

That notion of home is the catalyst for Julia’s creativity. An idyllic childhood, not far from where she now lives with her husband; a close family and the lifelong friends she has made along the way, infuse her work with an innate sense of joy.

“I haven’t moved very far,” laughs Julia. “Mum and Dad rented a dairy farm from the National Trust for over 50 years, and the

farmhouse opposite Church Cove car park at Gunwalloe was our family home. With two sisters and a brother, growing up was filled with simple pleasures. The neighbours at the top of the hill had five children and we used to make camps and ride ponies bareback on the beach. I married my husband in the church there. I have lots of happy memories. My creative journey began there too, taking photographs of sunsets from an early age.”

But it was not until Julia had raised her own family that she began to hanker after a new kind of creative pursuit.

Whilst working in a local primary school, she utilised her skills to produce learning materials for a pupil with a visual impairment and it was thanks to this rewarding experience that Julia returned to making.

“I enjoyed creating tactile pictures and Braille books, which enabled her to join in with her friends in the class,” says Julia. “With my family’s encouragement, I then enrolled as a part-time, mature student on University College Falmouth’s Foundation Diploma in Art & Design in 2006.

“Initially, I was drawn to printmaking, building up texture with collagraphs and embossing into paper. My final piece was a collection of porcelain vessels with embossed designs, which set me firmly on my path. I realised that I was attracted to texture and it is all about the feel with ceramics.

“Now, I produce three different shapes of mug and invite people to pick them up to feel which one is right for them. How things feel in the hand is all important, not just the colour.”

After Falmouth, Julia enrolled on a ceramics course at Truro College and attended intensive workshops at Newlyn School of Art, which not only informed her practice but also instilled in her a love of Cornish coastal artwork.

“I love Jack Doherty’s bowls that he creates with a soda firing technique to produce that

crystal blue water colour; Emma Jeffryes’ jaunty nautical style; Benjamin Warner’s moody, misty views of Loe Bar and Emma Dunbar’s depictions of Daymer Bay.”

As an avid walker and cyclist, Julia immerses herself in the Cornish countryside at every opportunity, taking inspiration from ferns, grasses and leaves; the shadows cast by the sun, the colours of Cornwall and the birds of the air.

“Out on the cliffs, you see gorse, sea pinks, the lovely greens, heathers, the hues of the sea and sky – colours you just don’t get anywhere else. If I don’t get to the sea, I really struggle. The call of the ocean is strong! I have got to be outdoors.”

Alongside her popular thrown work, Julia models small sculptures of birds and other animals, each with their own distinct character.

“It started with Jenny Wren at the back door looking for spiders. There’s that thing about wrens being incarnations of people who are no longer with us – and robins. Wrens and robins are so delightful to make. Someone will ask me to make a chough or an oystercatcher and I will research it. Starting at the beak, I use my hands to pinch and model the shape I am looking for. Its individual personality evolves as I work. Some look cheeky, some look quizzical. My birds are popular at the craft fairs I attend because the lovely people who buy them always tell me that they make them smile.”

And that is the unerring essence of Julia Crimmen’s ceramics: handmade with care, rooted in Cornwall and designed to bring joy.

Some of the many artists featured at this year's Open Studios:

Sharon Reeves

Painting – St Ives

Sharon is passionate about the Cornish landscape and enjoys working with acrylics. A new garden studio awaits, bursting with paintings of local scenes. Her coastal location inspires her to paint the rapidly changing sand dunes; aiming to capture the moment, whilst imagining what has gone before and what will follow.

Russell Martin

Ceramics – Duloe, near Looe

Russell is a former art teacher who creates hand-built ceramic vessels inspired by Cornwall, its history and lore.

Birds, fish and ancient tales inspire his designs, which continually evolve. He individually decorates each piece using the sgraffito technique, which he discovered as an extension of his lino and woodcut printmaking.

instagram.com/artyruss_

Veframé

Textile Art – Krowji, Redruth

Veframé keeps traditional textile techniques alive, applying them to modern and contemporary designs. Large scale handmade pieces, created from organic, recycled and second-hand materials, transform emotions into tangible beauty and embrace a sustainable work ethic that respects nature and goes against the destructive, fast-paced, massproduced world we live in today.

www.veframe.com

Cornish Spoons

Woodcraft – Trew, near Helston

Cornish Spoons design and craft their unique wooden utensils and keepsakes by hand from responsibly resourced timber and, where possible, from reclaimed wood, sourced from the local area. Unlike mass-produced products, each spoon and scoop is individually crafted using traditional tools, and incorporates sea glass, fossils and semi-precious stones.

Angela Annesley

Painting/Printmaking – St Just, Land’s End

Angela’s striking, graphic style offers an original interpretation of Cornwall’s wild seas, rolling hills and winding streets. Her woodcuts and linoprints are defined by the bold shapes, outlines and textures of the natural world. The jewel-like colours of her paintings, in oils and mixed media, are reminiscent of stained glass.

HIGHER LODGE

A detached four-bedroom lodge house in nearly 2.5 acres of magnificent gardens and grounds, with a separate two-bed bungalow.

The property comprises four bedrooms in the main house, with a separate two bedroom bungalow that’s ideal for growing teens or dependant relatives in need of their own space. A detached double garage is perfect for hobbyists or anybody dreaming of their own garden studio, while another triple garage, workshop and office provides a superb space in which to work from home.

Other features of note include a tennis court, a further detached studio and garage and, of course, the incredibly private setting, with no near neighbours to worry about disturbing should you decide to use all that space to entertain during the summer.

In the main house, three of the four bedrooms boast en suites, while all offer their own unique views of the home’s stunning surroundings. Downstairs, an open-plan kitchen and breakfast room combine with a drawing room, dining room and snug to provide a family with ample space to both spread out and spend time together.

Located in the rural setting of Washaway, near the sought-after villages of St Mabyn and St Tudy, and with the market town of Wadebridge just a short distance away, residents here have access to a plethora of options when it comes to spending their down time. Cycle the Camel Trail from Wadebridge to Padstow, or stop and stay awhile in Wadebridge, dining in one of its many eateries before perusing the wares of the town’s numerous independent retailers and treating yourself to something special.

Alternatively, spend a day by the sea on one of the area’s famed beaches, building sandcastles, launching kayaks or even chartering a boat. However you choose to spend your time, Higher Lodge is in prime position to enjoy the very best of north Cornwall’s coast and countryside.

TIME FOR A

Elevate your home with stunning shutters and beautiful blinds.

As the seasons transition and daylight hours change, finding the balance between managing light and heat in your home, while maintaining its aesthetic appeal, can be a challenge. However, window shutters emerge as an increasingly popular option to elevate your home.

EXPERIENCE

DID YOU KNOW?

With shuttercraft, you can enjoy premium, made-tomeasure shutters with the benefit of a top-rated service from local experts, who will help find the perfect solution for your home and guide you through the whole process.

Contact Lynn and Steve by calling 01637 849153

Stylish yet durable, shutters offer a versatile way to control light and temperature throughout the year. During the unpredictable spring weather, they provide a cool and comfortable space, while also helping to insulate your home during colder months. And with a wide range of styles and colours to choose from, Shuttercraft ensures that you can find the perfect window solution to complement any interior.

One of the key benefits of shutters is their adjustability. By tilting the louvres, you can easily prevent glare on screens while still enjoying the natural light, making them perfect for rooms where you spend a lot of time, like the living room.

Looking ahead to summer, shutters act as an additional barrier against harsh sun rays, helping to protect your home from overheating. This dual functionality makes them not only practical but also cost-effective in terms of energy efficiency.

Did you know that shutters prove to be ideal for bedrooms, providing privacy, blocking out streetlights, and minimising outside noise at night? Shuttercraft even offers an integrated shutter and blind solution, Shutter & Shade, which combines the best of both worlds to virtually eliminate outdoor light, and provide an extra layer of noise reduction.

Experience the many benefits of shutters and blinds this spring, and elevate your living space with a practical solution to light and temperature control, ensuring both comfort and style throughout the changing seasons.

BUT DIFFERENT The same

With striking design and flawless functionality, elevate your garden space with beautiful balustrades from Kestrel.

Glass balustrades have, in recent years, become a popular means of enhancing our outdoor spaces. Not least because they bring a striking and contemporary design to our homes, nor that they offer both safety and strength that you can rely upon, especially handy for those with little ones running around!

Kestrel Specialist Handrail Systems specialise in these, installing balustrades, Juliet balconies and privacy screens using 316-grade mirror-polished steel posts, which are particularly suited to the marine climate here in Cornwall. Combining these with toughened glass in-fills, the results are always spectacular.

They can also be fitted to different substrates, can be installed at different heights, and the balustrades can either be top or side-mounted, depending on your design preference. The glass itself comes in a range of options, including clear, satin or tinted, but what they all have in common is that they are 10mm thick and toughened, again

providing you with the peace of mind that your new outdoor area is secure. Other benefits of using balustrades include providing shelter in windy spots, as well as privacy, especially when using satin or tinted glass. You get the illusion of space in your garden, with light cascading through the glass, whilst retaining that all important privacy. It’s a win-win!

An excellent choice for hot tubs and barbeque areas, with the additional option of back-lighting helping to take you stylishly from day to night, if you’re looking to take your outdoor space to the next level with a feature that’s as beautiful as it is functional, then the expert Kestrel team is on hand to help you achieve your vision.

A better way TO WARMTH

Wendron Stoves leads the way in Cornwall for customers looking for the most efficient and innovative products on the market. The team prides itself on its technical expertise, with the business serving as a solution to addressing our expectations and concerns surrounding environmental consciousness and impact. Indeed, whilst solutions to today’s environmental issues are challenging – and often costly – Wendron Stoves believes in tackling the problem head on.

The company commits itself to providing customers with the perfect product. To do so,

it has to adhere to evolving environmental needs, which has resulted in the team’s discovery of some impressively innovative solutions over the years. From ensuring that all installation engineers are HETAS qualified, to sourcing wood-pellet-burning stoves, the team are always keen to challenge themselves in order to adapt for the future. It’s for this reason that you’ll now find stoves in the range that incorporate smart technology via electronic control systems – once reserved for electric and oil-fired heating. Now, complex controls are now available for the modest woodburner, too! This means that

38 | CORNWALL-LIVING.CO.UK Discover the latest smart heating technology from Wendron Stoves and take control of your home’s environmental impact.
CORNWALL HOME & GARDEN SHOW

we, as customers, can enjoy the technology that we’re all familiar with, from our mobile phones to our tablets, to control our woodburners. In doing so, we can mitigate several issues as we attempt to warm our homes during the cooler months.

In fact, there are a host of benefits to this. Firstly, we can minimise our impact on the environment. By exercising control over the heat from our burners by using an electronic control system, we can achieve the cleanest combustion possible, helping us to get the most out of our wood. You can set the desired room temperature on your smart device to prevent overheating, and when you’re not using the stove, the air supply is automatically closed, stopping hot air in the room from travelling up your chimney and being wasted. You can still light your cosy fire as usual (and who doesn’t love the process of building and lighting a fire?) however, this technology means you’ll have the ease of letting the system control the air supply for you. What’s more, if you change your mind and the room becomes too hot or cold, you’ll still have the flexibility to adjust the temperature by simply using your smart device. Finally, when it’s time to restoke, you’ll receive a notification on your device, just as you do with any other app.

Manufacturers currently leading the market include HWAM, from the small Danish town of Hørning. HWAM® SmartControl allows you to regulate the temperature level in rooms heated with a wood-buring stove directly from your smart device, essentially putting woodburners on an equal footing with the convenience of other heating methods. You’re no longer restricted to electric heaters if you want to easily regulate your home’s temperature, which is a boon to anybody wanting the convenience of electric heating with the soothing glow of a real fire.

Another is Jøtul, whose wood-burning stoves with Zensoric technology are proving as revolutionary as they are user friendly. Zensoric automatically optimises air supply for a cleaner and more efficient burn, benefiting the environment and your budget. It also minimises soot on the glass of the stove, meaning you enjoy the therapeutic dancing of the flames without black marks spoiling the view.

Wendron Stoves’ strong relationship with both of these brands means that you’ll receive the highest-quality product and after-market service possible. The control systems that come with each also mean no more getting up and down to put the next log on or tweak the air vent, and no more constantly adjusting the thermostat!

THE CYCLEBreaking

An innovative product that has changed the way resin driveways are laid was founded in 2019 by two best friends from Cornwall. The pair came up with a solution to tackle the never-ending issue of plastic waste. Something that’s felt perhaps more keenly by the coast in Cornwall than anywhere else, plastic pollution is having devastating effects on the environment around the world.

Fortunately, Oltco founders Tom Stringer and John Pearce had the idea to launch Recycle Bound. Without a doubt the most popular product that the resin-bound specialists at Oltco have to offer, Recycle Bound now accounts for over 80% of all surfaces that the team install.

Experiencing first-hand the impact that plastic waste has on our coastline, Tom and John wanted to create a product that would help make a change and reduce the waste that continues to be found daily on Cornwall’s beaches. Since, their innovative Recycle Bound has achieved great acclaim, with

Recycle Bound from Oltco is paving a more sustainable future for resin-bound surface solutions.

recognition from multiple awards including ‘Product of the Year’ at the Cornwall Business Awards, runner up for ‘Recycled Product of the Year’ in the National Recycling Awards, and ‘Sustainability Warrior’ at the British Franchise Association, an award category that was created specifically for Oltco in order to recognise its sustainability achievements.

Across the Duchy, Recycle Bound has been installed at myriad leading visitor attractions, including the Eden Project, Bodmin Jail Hotel, and the location of the G7 Summit, Carbis Bay Hotel. Not only has the product changed the future of resin driveways, it has allowed customers, domestic and commercial, to benefit from a durable and low-maintenance surface that’s as hard-wearing as it is environmentally friendly.

Worried about the condition of your doors and windows after another brutal winter?

If so, Collington & Company can help.

CEXPERIENCE

DID YOU KNOW...

For just £79, Collington & Company will provide a full service of all opening windows and doors in your property, ensuring all your products are in proper working order. Or to browse the new products available in the showroom, pay a visit between Monday and Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm.

ollington & Company is an independent, family-owned and run business established in 1969, specialising in the installation of efficient double-glazed windows and doors, together with bespoke conservatories, for clients across Cornwall. Over the last 54 years the company has acquired a superb reputation for products and services of the highest quality, supplying and installing them at a competitive price. So how can they help you today?

Especially in today’s market, with so many options and guides to read online, discovering your perfect window or door can be difficult. Collington and Company are here to help cut through the noise; the team understand this very conundrum, refusing to supply windows and doors that aren’t secured by design and of the highest quality. “All our uPVC, GRP Composite and Aluminium doors are 70mm thick and double rebated,” explains General Manager Steve Cobbin. This means they are more robust, durable and weather resistant than the 44mm, single-rebated alternatives you might find elsewhere. “We want to ensure our customers benefit from the best available product on the market. More than that, we want to supply a range of styles and fitting requirements too, from standard casements, to flush casements, shaped frame, tilt and turn, and of course traditional sliding sash.”

As well as installations of new windows, doors and conservatories, Collingtons has a professional service department dedicated to the maintenance of all uPVC and aluminium window, door and conservatory products. In fact, says Steve: “Our two full-time Service Engineers are on the road five days a week, carrying out repairs including – but not limited to – replacement glass, hinges, mechanisms and furniture such as handles and letterboxes. We offer spares, repairs and maintenance to all uPVC and aluminium windows and doors, whether they’re our own products that need some extra TLC or products installed by others that need tending to or repairing.”

Of course, every now and then we find that our doors and windows have put up with the Cornish weather for one winter too many. If this sounds like you then it’s worth knowing that Collington’s Helston showroom has a wide range of products on display, with a team that’s always delighted to welcome you in and show you around!

WITH A ZING! Start spring

With spring in sight, the experts at Plants of Cornwall give us their top tips for injecting some lime-green brilliance into our gardens.

In the world of gardening, where diversity and resilience are highly prized, the Plants of Cornwall team have some expert ideas to help us add some zesty colours to our outdoor spaces. To start with, they recommend Euphorbia as a botanical standout. This plant thrives in different climates and is suitable for various garden settings, from borders to containers and even as striking standalone focal points. Euphorbia Wulfenii produces round heads of lime green flowers in early spring. Accompanying Euphorbia with Carex oshimensis Everillo, a grassy companion with arching lime-green foliage, add both colour and texture to your garden. The Phormium Yellow Wave, a New Zealand flax, introduces waves of vibrant yellow and green-striped leaves, ensuring that your garden is a visual delight.

Moving into late spring and summer, Hydrangea paniculata Limelight casts a luminous lime green glow in your garden, thanks to its radiant blooms. It is complemented by the Heuchera Lime Marmalade, a plant with unique lime-green leaves that add a playful touch to your flower beds. The bright, scalloped leaves of Alchemilla mollis, commonly known as Lady's Mantle, play an important part in creating texture in borders and beds.

For a garden that keeps its charm all year long, these lime green wonders team up effortlessly with evergreens. Sarcococca confusa has a lovely fragrance and is compact, making it a perfect match for the glossy dark green leaves of Pittosporum tobira and the timeless beauty of Japanese Holly, Ilex crenata. They essentially form the green dream team for your outdoor space!

For a touch of classic elegance, the Geranium Johnson’s Blue or Wargrave Pink are both great choices, while the Agapanthus africanus will add clusters of bright blue or crisp white flowers. The Iris sibirica and Echinacea purpurea create a harmonious blend with their blue and pink hues, bridging the gap between the lime green and the vibrant floral palette.

As the colours unfold, your garden becomes not just a well-designed space but a vibrant ecosystem that hosts essential pollinators. Embark on this horticultural journey by starting your spring with a zing of lime green brilliance, witnessing your outdoor sanctuary transform into an inviting haven, buzzing with life, beauty, and the promise of a flourishing season ahead.

Hot and cold therapy proves a big hit at the Kernow Springs Nordic Spa!

The Kernow Springs Nordic Spa at The Saltbox in Wadebridge opened in April last year and, despite some early scepticism, has now proved a huge success, drawing regular visitors, rave reviews and a growing membership community over 100 strong. Interested to know more, especially with talk around town suggesting that going to the Nordic Spa is the new Friday night out, we catch up with business owner and host, Martin Dean, with one question on our minds: what’s it all about?

“It’s clear that these days, especially after the pandemic, people are more conscious about their health and wellbeing,” says Martin. “We’ve noticed a definite shift in people’s social activities over the last few years, with more and more now choosing healthier alternative ways to ‘hang out’ rather than just embarking on the traditional night out down the pub!”

At this stage, it’s worth pointing out that Martin is not approaching this new venture as a novice in the industry. As he explains: “We have been building and installing our wood-fired hot tubs, saunas and outdoor spa solutions across the south west for over ten years now and our emphasis has always been on hot and cold immersion therapy. Contrast therapy, in the form of hot and cold immersion, is not only good

for our achy muscles, it also teaches us that progress and confidence is found in small, manageable steps.”

Martin continues: “Regular bathing in this way helps with muscle tension, swollen joints, stress, anxiety and depression. There is even a current study in place by The Royal Health Institute highlighting how hot and cold immersion therapy might be used as a preventative measure for Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.”

Between rounds of the hot tub and sauna, Martin’s experienced team encourage clients to build up their time progressively in the cold plunge pool with support from the family and friends they’re visiting with.

“In the short term,” says Martin, “this provides a huge dopamine hit with big smiles and an overall feeling of wellness. In the long term, clients are ready to face the week with a new-found confidence having tried and conquered something new and extreme.”

OF TRADITIONS The tastiest

Immerse yourself in the magic of Tintagel with Camelot Castle, where Arthurian legend meets one of Britain’s great foodie traditions.

Camelot Castle offers guests the chance to stay and relax in accommodation of scale usually reserved for the likes of Downton Abbey. Visitors here can soak up the period charm and enjoy the staggering coastal views that the castle’s clifftop location affords. They can also spend their days exploring the local area, immersing themselves in Arthurian legend by visiting the famed Tintagel Castle, widely believed to be the King Arthur’s place of birth.

But it’s not only for those in search of a magical place to stay for the night. Far from it! In fact, it’s also the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat, with no fewer than three venues in which to enjoy refreshment. There’s Irina’s Restaurant, where superb, freshly cooked food is prepared using local produce. With formal dining inside, there is also the chance to eat and drink al fresco on the Camelot Castle Hotel terrace. For pre or post-dinner drinks, guests can retire to The Golden Age Bar, and if only stopping by in the day time, why not enjoy Afternoon Tea in The Explorer’s Tea Room? Here you can enjoy one of, if not the most luxurious afternoon tea in Cornwall, all in one of the county’s most beautiful, dramatic and romantic locations. Available every day between 12pm and 6pm, there are three afternoon tea options to choose from. The first is the Camelot Afternoon Tea. Available for just £24.50 per person, expect a selection of sumptuous finger sandwiches, Russian

honey cake, brownie, macarons, cupcakes, scones, Cornish strawberry preserve, Cornish clotted cream and, of course, tea. The second – the Prosecco Afternoon Tea – is great for when you’ve earned a long-lunch treat. Inclusive of everything in the Camelot Afternoon tea, with the addition of a large glass of pink prosecco, this treat is just £29.50 per person.

The one that catches our eye, however, is the Royal Afternoon Tea. Also featuring the same tasty treats as the signature Camelot Afternoon Tea, the ‘royal’ touch comes via the addition of salmon caviar, along with a glass of pink Champagne from Dom Perignon Grapes.

Whichever of the above options tickles your taste buds, there are few better places to enjoy afternoon tea than the clifftops of Tintagel, and the tea menu from the renowned Tregothnan Tea Estate will make it difficult to choose just one. Replete with history, and with the period charm of Camelot Castle beckoning you to take a trip back in time, it’s unsurprising that the Camelot Castle website has been inundated with great reviews.

IS UP The only way

Living the holiday home dream in 2024 with a little help from the team at Cornish Cottage Holidays.

For many of us, owning our very own place in beautiful Cornwall is the ultimate goal. But the reality is, for many holiday home owners in the region, this property needs to be both a private bolthole as well as a great income source. At leading holiday letting specialists Cornish Cottage Holidays, the team are well aware of the current economic and political climate, and ensuring holiday homes are as profitable as possible for their owners is absolutely essential.

With this in mind, Emily Mercer, South West Marketing Manager at the Redruthbased agency, has offered her take on the current holiday letting landscape, with tips on ensuring the 2024 holiday letting season is a success: “At Cornish Cottage Holidays we are pleased to use our booking data and statistics from the 2023 season, to help us understand what might lie ahead for owners.

“Across the industry, 2023 was widely regarded as a ‘Covid-reset year’. Whilst we enjoyed sustained occupancy levels throughout the peak summer period of over 89% across our portfolio of 750+ cottages in Cornwall, overall, the booking numbers we saw were more in line with the fantastic pre-Covid occupancy rates of 2019. This natural reset was expected to occur at some point, as the world moves on from the ‘staycation boom’ and returns to a state of normality.”

So, how busy can we anticipate 2024 to be? “In November,” Emily continues, “we did a poll of 2,000 UK holidaymakers and results showed that 53% of participants expect to take more than one UK break in 2024. 23% said they are more likely to go on a UK holiday this year

than last, with the top reasons being ease, and the fact that they’re watching their finances more carefully due to the cost-of-living crisis.”

In terms of the booking trends the team believes will be prevalent this year, the popularity of short breaks is sure to remain, which Emily kindly elaborates on: “20% of our bookings were for three, four or five-night breaks last year, and 31% of our bookings were for last minute getaways, a trend that we’ve seen steadily increasing for some time now. We’ve also seen a 60% increase in searches for pet-friendly holidays since 2019, as the pandemic accelerated dog ownership in the UK. And finally, the popularity of glamping accommodation continues to soar. Our customer survey revealed that 33% of Brits plan to ‘go back to basics’ with their trips in the coming year – including glamping – to save money. So, for owners that have unused land or are considering expanding their portfolio with a shepherd’s hut or similar, now is the time to do it!”

For those thinking of letting, the region remains exceptionally popular as a tourist destination and for properties willing to accept short breaks, last minute bookings and dogs, the income opportunities are huge.

Art in Focus

INTRODUCING THE PHOTOREALISTIC SEASCAPES OF JAMIE MEDLIN

A Cornish marine artist specialising in photorealistic oil paintings of Cornwall’s seascapes and yachts, Jamie takes inspiration from nature and the array of stunning views we’re surrounded by in the Duchy. His aim: to produce quality paintings replicating the beauty of these views, capturing the nuances of light and how they’re affected by the weather, time of day and seasons. This combination of factors creates an infinite possibility of scenes and moods, all of which can be pleasing to the eye for differing reasons, and this is highlighted by the diversity of work within his portfolio. His exhibition Jamie Medlin - Nuances of Light will be running at Falmouth Art Gallery from 20th April to 29th June.

Wave 7 Gallery, in Wadebridge’s Polmorla Walk, has a wide range of stunning art to suit all tastes and budgets. Owner Plum Mead is passionate about the artists whose work she stocks and has created a gentle and calm but inspiring space. Vincent Basham is a self-taught artist from Maldon, Essex. He was educated in Tiptree where his paintings were first exhibited as a young teenager. His work has been displayed in prestigious galleries in London, Essex, Suffolk and south-west England.

Vincent developed a passion for painting seascapes after living in Cornwall during his early twenties. He moved back to the Duchy seven years ago with his partner Jane, to the

town of Wadebridge, where he has a purpose-built studio/gallery adjacent to his home which overlooks the River Camel and the Camel Trail.

The main medium for his work is oil; several of his paintings are available as limited edition Pprints, and Vincent also accepts commissions, samples of which can be seen on his website.

The Customs House Gallery continues to build on its reputation for showcasing the very best of original Cornish art.

Established in 1995, the Customs House Gallery on Porthleven’s beautiful harbourside is an independent gallery owned and managed by husband-and-wife team, John and Louise Winterton. Working with Debbie, who completes their team of three, John and Louise love sharing the gallery with people, whether you’re looking for something to adorn your walls or simply want to see for yourself the amazing creativity that this county inspires.

Inside, you’ll discover that the Customs House Gallery exhibits work in a range of styles, including landscapes and still life, as well as seascapes. There is also a fabulous display of ceramics, sculpture, glass, jewellery and even some textiles in the form of beautiful hand-painted silk scarves from Sharon Verry. But it’s not just the regular display of beautiful pieces that make a visit to the Customs House Gallery worth your while. Indeed, not only does it occupy a premier position on the harbourside in what is arguably one of Cornwall’s most popular foodie hubs, it also has an exciting schedule of exhibitions planned for 2024, full details of which can be found on the website.

More than that, the gallery is a member of the Own Art scheme – a national scheme funded by Arts Council England designed to make owning original art more accessible. This means that should you spot a piece within the gallery that you simply cannot leave without, you can make it yours with 0% finance! Even if you can’t make it to the gallery in person, the gallery has a fully functioning website where work can be browsed as well as purchased, with both UK and international delivery available. IN THE Moment

We catch up with an artist whose passion is to capture feelings of tranquillity and calm on canvas.

Engaged in the frenetic pursuit of our goals there comes a moment of stasis when we can’t help but reflect. It may be at a seminal moment such as a marriage, the birth of a child or simply when suddenly greeted by a breath-taking vista. We take a pause, and then it’s back into the maelstrom. That moment of reflection recedes into the background and becomes a full stop and then a comma, a punctuation mark in the story of our lives.

However, there are those among us who feel duty bound to hold that moment, to capture it in words or, in John McKinstry’s case, on canvas. He is a person who is moved to create by an acute sense of place – be it out walking around the small harbours that dot the coast, over moors or when encountering solitary farmhouses and cottages. The aspiration is to recapture the emotion felt at the time rather than to replicate the actual scene like a photograph. So, where John can be said to fall under the heading of a ‘representative artist’ there is something more going on – his desire to share with us feelings induced by what he’s seen. Not any scene though; there is no angst-driven desire to portray a vision of discord or disharmony. He wishes to guide us to a point of serenity.

Tucked away in one of Cornwall’s many quiet riverside hamlets he reflects: “I am forever grateful to have such a wonderful wealth of inspiration around me and if I can capture just a small part of that on canvas then I am more than happy.”

ë TOP ‘The Island’

é ABOVE

‘The Harbour Moon’

Talking to John, we soon discover that the path to this point in his life has been facilitated by a working life in horticulture, which has enabled him to embrace life’s highs and lows and build a space both physically and mentally to share an appreciation of peace via his empirically based art. There is no pretension here.

Creating for over ten years now, he exhibits across the UK. Original pieces are available to buy from selected galleries as well as his own website. Should you want to engage with John and have him capture your own tranquil spot on canvass, then he welcomes commissions.

FROM WAVE TO WALL

Ocean photographer Mike Lacey is bringing a new meaning to the word ‘splashback’.

To see examples of Mike Lacey’s amazing kitchen splashbacks, simply scan the QR code below.

Mike Lacey should, by now, need no introduction. Regular readers of Cornwall Living will surely be familiar with his incredible and, perhaps, unorthodox approach to capturing the many moods of the Cornish coast. Taking to the sea, wetsuit firmly zipped and camera in hand, Mike can usually be found ducking and diving beneath the waves, capturing moments at their very heart and mesmerising admirers of his work with the results.

Large and small, the prints adorning the walls of his Porthleven gallery are breathtaking, and you could be forgiven for

not knowing which one to pick. In fact, for anybody who thinks ‘a wave is a wave’, well, just pay Waves Surf Art Gallery a visit, where Mike will be happy to show that this is simply not the case!

From moody skies to sun-shine summer days, deep, hollow dream-waves to steep banks that would inspire fear in many just to look at them, Mike captures them all. His ocean photography combines with a team, led by the man himself, who are happy to help you find the right image for your home. And it’s not only prints that you can choose, in fact if you’re contemplating updating your kitchen and adding in a point of interest, what could be more interesting than the nuanced light and texture of Mike’s work on your kitchen wall?

Offering bespoke splashbacks to suit all spaces, simply send Mike and the team an image of your space along with the sort of image you have in mind – be it calming or dramatic – and they’ll produce a digital render to show you how it could look. Alternatively, pop into the gallery in Porthleven and let them walk you through the options.

Essence of

Andrew Giddens is one of Cornwall’s most recognised landscape painters. After studying at Falmouth College of Arts, he began working as a full-time painter, with many successful exhibitions and solo shows in some of the county’s leading galleries.

Working mainly in oil, Andrew’s often large-scale paintings capture something of the essence of the Cornish coast, and can be found in collections around the world.

For this reason, Cornish Art Porthleven is delighted to be exhibiting a new collection of his paintings.

Known and loved for its selection of collectable Cornish Art, this gallery on the harbourside of Porthleven is home to the works of some of the county’s leading artists. This makes it worth a visit at any time for those who love art, however with Andrew Giddens set to be exhibiting, we at Cornwall Living are especially excited to stop by.

THE COAST

An

exciting new exhibition from Andrew Giddens is coming to Porthleven.

Titled Trenow, the body of work consists of studies of Andrew’s local beach overlooking Mount’s Bay, where he can frequently be found walking and drawing inspiration for his work. What you’ll notice in each of his pieces, is how they offer a raw and moving depiction of the sea and its surroundings. His expressions invite viewers to contemplate the atmosphere of the coastal landscape, just as Andrew himself would have done before putting brush to canvas. The results are truly spectacular, and with the exhibition opening 30th March (2pm to 4pm), and then from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday for four weeks, we would certainly recommend paying Cornish Art a visit.

FOR THE SENSES A FEAST

Porthleven was recently listed by The Guardian as one of the UK’s top-five ‘great hidden foodie destinations’ in the UK. Right on cue, Chef Jude Kereama’s popular family-style restaurant, Kota Kai, has re-opened after an extensive refurbishment.

The restaurant, which was originally launched in 2011, is situated in the heart of the historic Cornish village, overlooking the harbour, just moments from sister restaurant, Kota. Kota Kai was originally created to provide a family friendly option with integrity – a restaurant that offered a laid back, welcoming atmosphere with a delicious menu that stood out from the usual family-friendly fayre and was a nod to Jude’s heritage with Asian elements to its dishes. Now, 13 years later, with head chef Marcus Houghton, and Jenna Sawle leading front of house, Kai has been relaunched with a full refurbishment and renovation; a version that retains it’s warm welcome, but has become a little more sophisticated.

“After 13 years, it felt like the right time to evolve the offering at Kota Kai to something a little bit more grown up. It is important to us that it still feels like a welcoming place for families but is a destination for drinks and snacks too. The open plan layout really highlights our special location, drawing the eye to the views across the harbour. We also have a slightly different menu format with

some great new dishes we’ve been working on, accompanied by an extensive drinks list. We are excited to introduce the changes to our guests,” says Jude.

Hitting the ground running, Kota Kai has been busy since opening night, and we caught up with Jude in between service to share one of his popular recipes, as an example of what guests can expect from Kota Kai: “This dish reminds me of my childhood with my family. We made a different type of bao, which had the filling in the middle, stuffed with a sticky red pork char sui mix that my Mum would make. We used to love rolling out the bun dough because we knew how delicious they would be after they had been freshly steamed. We ate them faster than we could make them! This recipe is for a Taiwanese-style bun which you can make fresh.”

FIVE-SPICE ROAST PORK BAO BUN WITH HOISON SAUCE, CUCUMBER AND SPRING ONIONS

SERVES 8

Preparation time:

1½ hours, plus up to 2 overnights

Cooking time: 4 hours

INGREDIENTS

1kg pork belly

250g of Cornish Sea Salt

250g caster sugar

For the Buns:

300g plain flour

1tsp instant yeast

1tsp baking powder

1tsp sugar

155ml lukewarm water

For the Garnish:

1 jar hoisin sauce

½ bunch spring onions, sliced

½ cucumber, sliced

80g peanuts, roasted and chopped

3 red chillies, chopped

METHOD

1 Start by mixing the sugar and salt together and rub all over the pork belly. Wrap it in cling film and let it brine overnight in a tray in the fridge.

2 The next day, preheat the oven to 240ºC. Brown the pork belly in the oven for about 30 minutes. Turn down the heat to 120ºC and cook for about 3 more hours until the pork is tender. You can now press your pork overnight in the fridge with some weights on top if you want to have perfect slices. Alternatively, you could just slice your pork belly ready to put into the buns.

3 To make the buns, put all the ingredients in a mixer with a dough hook and mix for 10 minutes. Divide the dough into 8 balls, before making each one an oval shape. Brush with vegetable oil in the middle and then fold over with a piece of parchment in between the fold and prove for 30 mins. They won’t double in size so don’t worry about the volume of rise. Steam on some parchment paper for 10 minutes until cooked.

4 Warm through the pork in the oven and if necessary warm the bao in the steamer. Open up each bun and spread hoisin on the inside, then add a slice of pork or two, cucumber slices, chopped peanuts, chilli and the spring onions.

JOB Proper

I

Georgina Young, Brewing Director at St Austell Brewery, gives us her recommendations on some perfect food pairings.

f you’re looking for something different to try with dinner, you may already be asking yourself the age-old question ‘red or white?’. However, says Georgina: “I can safely say St Austell’s IPA, Proper Job, should be what you’re reaching for. We look to use as much Cornish barley as we can get our hands on to brew this punchy Cornish ale, which is packed with citrus fruits such as pink grapefruit as well as cedar wood and herby flavours from the American hops of Cascade and Chinook –sourced from the Yakima Valley.”

Whilst it may not be the obvious choice to opt for a pint over a glass of wine with a meal, Georgina explains that there’s something special that a beer can add which some wines just cannot rival. “Proper Job cuts through fats, complements the punchier flavours of a dish and contrasts to wake up the senses and ignite flavours you might not otherwise have recognised,” she explains. “Due to its large hop load, the beer will clear and refresh a palate with ease for rich and creamy dishes, working brilliantly with favourites like mac and cheese, deep-fried camembert, even just a smelly slice of Stinking Bishop cheddar!

“It also complements roasted garlic, sweet onions, rosemary, thyme, sage and citrus peel, and its bitterness will even help to balance salt in dishes. Sip a glass with miso and

chilli glazed aubergine, which harmonise with the tropical pineapple and grapefruit flavours that Proper Job brings to the table, and serve it with sticky coconut rice, bok choy and roasted tenderstem broccoli. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds, fierce chillies and sweet pomegranate and you have a culinary pairing that promises to deliver a burst of flavour with every mouthful.”

This punchy IPA pairs with favourites from the summer grill, too. As Georgina explains: “It contrasts with a range of smoky barbeque flavours like ribs, crispy chilli cauliflower or chicken wings and, if you’re in the mood for a south-east Asian curry, it’ll help to ease those punchy flavours, too. Proper Job is brewed to stand up to some big flavours, both savoury and sweet, in fact it will easily boost sweet treats like a juicy carrot cake, too!”

In short, you may well be surprised by just how well a beer can enhance an everyday dinner. And what better way to complement Cornwall’s already-famed foodie scene with a drop of Cornish-born beer?

With spring upon us, Rock Distilleries is embarking on new adventures.

2023 was a busy year for the Rock Distilleries team. Not only did founders Angie and George decide to move their base to Wadebridge, they also undertook a host of other new store openings around Cornwall, all whilst continuing to appear at regular markets up and down the county. Now, they are operating at full speed and it’s fair to say that there are no plans to slow down.

In fact, in addition to the retail sites in Wadebridge, Bude and Tintagel, the team have opened an exciting new premises in Padstow at 9 Lanadwell Street. The best part is that in celebration of the new opening, they’ve launched two new gins: the Sublime Lime, featuring a hint of mint and making an instant Mojito when added to lime soda, and Almond Air, offering a fabulously delicate almond taste.

For something to cleanse the palate, Angie explains: “We have also launched our Lemongino to add to our collection of liqueurs. This divine Rock Gin-based lemon drink is made with fresh lemons and a lick of sugar, all of which is completely natural. It’s heaven to sip in the garden, topped up with prosecco or even just spring water.”

Not ones to rest on the laurels of their success, Angie and George have also been making moves into the whiskey market. Over Christmas, they launched Rock Single Malt

Whiskey, aged for three years in ex-French red wine barrels. This was quickly followed by the amazing and unsurprisingly popular Rock Peanut Whiskey liqueur. “We’re not stopping there either,” says Angie, who explains that there are more whiskey liqueurs in production for release later this year. “Our new venture into whiskey is proving another great addition to the Rock Distillery repertoire!”

If you’re intrigued to see – and more importantly taste – the wares of this exemplary Cornish brand, then you’ll be pleased to know that the new Wadebridge headquarters also features a shop, including a full tasting station. You’ll also have a chance to see for yourself the team’s original ‘Bonanza Boy’ still and gain a glimpse into the beginnings of this continuing success story, that is still embarking on its opening chapters.

Ringing THE CHANGES

The Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act (the Act) received Royal Assent on 26th October 2023, with Companies House anticipating the first changes to UK company law from 4th March this year. At the time of writing, the introduction of these changes is awaiting secondary legislation, and therefore the implementation date is still dependent on parliamentary timetables.

The Act aims to introduce measures which will lead to improved transparency and more accurate records on the public company registers, by giving Companies House the power to play a more significant role in tackling economic crime.

So what will this mean for you? If you’re a company director, a person with significant control of a company (PSC), or you file on behalf of a company, you’ll need to be aware of the changes. Measures coming into force from the anticipated date of 4th March include granting greater powers for Companies House to query information

and request supporting evidence. It will be able to scrutinise and reject information which it believes is incorrect or inconsistent. This makes submitting correct and relevant information on the register even more important. If a company fails to respond to a request for more information, it may face a financial penalty, an annotation on the company’s record, or prosecution.

The Act will also introduce stronger checks on company names which may give a false or misleading impression to the public, and it will lead to new rules for registered office addresses. In fact companies currently using a PO Box will need to have changed the address before 4th March, as PO Boxes will no longer be allowed. If Companies House is satisfied that a company’s address is not appropriate, it will move it to a default address held at Companies House. The company must then provide an appropriate address with evidence of propriety ownership within 28 days, or proceedings may be started to have the company struck off the register.

LIFESTYLE 90 | CORNWALL-LIVING.CO.UK
Michelle Dash, Manager at RRL Cornwall, explains recent changes in UK company law.

In addition to these changes, all companies will need to provide a registered email address. This won’t be visible to people viewing the register, but Companies House will use it for correspondence. For existing companies, this will need to be provided when the next confirmation statement is submitted. New companies will also need to confirm they are forming the company for a lawful purpose when they incorporate, with existing companies required to confirm every year on their confirmation statement that their future activities will be lawful.

There will also be the ability to annotate the register to make users aware of potential issues with the information provided to Companies House. Data matching tools will be used to identify and remove inaccurate information, in a bid to clean up the register, and data provided on the register will be shared with other government departments and law enforcement agencies.

These are just the changes expected as of 4th March. Further changes that the Act will introduce at a later date include a roll out of new filing options for small companies. Small and micro-entity companies will need to file their profit and loss account, and the option to file abridged accounts will be removed. This is a significant change for many. Some owner-managed and family businesses may be concerned by the increased financial information available to the public – this may drive changes to the way that those business owners extract funds from the company. This should be being considered now.

We can also expect identity verification for anyone setting up, running, owning or controlling a company or LLP. This is to deter those wishing to use companies for illegal purposes. New companies will need all directors and PSCs to verify their identification when the company is formed. For existing companies, there will be a transition period. More information on the verification process will be made available from Companies House over the coming months.

Any company claiming audit exemption will need to give an additional statement from the directors on the balance sheet. The directors will need to specify which exemption is being claimed and confirm that the company qualifies for the exemption.

Finally, Companies House is moving towards complete digitisation of document filing, which means all accounts will need to be filed using software.

In short, there are lots of changes being put in place with the introduction of the Act. If you’re unsure how to proceed or what changes your business needs to make in order to live up to the new requirements and changes, it always pays to seek expert advice.

EXPERIENCE

From Leadership, Team Building and Resilience, to Confidence and Motivation, head online to find the right Active Plus course for you and get started on your journey.

Established in 2011 by Cornish Fire Fighter, Tim Cocks, Active Plus delivers employment courses to over 50 groups around the county. His goal was to have the courses delivered by wounded, injured and sick (WIS) military veterans, themselves unemployed and suffering from ill health.

With funding from the National Lottery, after demonstrating that the loneliness and isolation within these groups of veterans only served to exacerbate issues around employment and ongoing negative effects on mental health, Tim and his team have been able to deliver countless projects in local Cornish communities to older and isolated people.

Over the next few years, Active Plus’ success of developing WIS veterans to support people in local communities resulted in European and Lottery funding, helping them to target those furthest from employment.

Active Plus was one of the smallest organisations nationally to be awarded this funding, and enjoyed one of the highest success rates! By the time the European funding had come to an end, Active Plus had helped thousands of

unemployed and lonely people, plus several hundred veterans.

Fast forward to now, and the scene has changed. A new Managing Director, Laura Truckle, sits at the helm. A young and proud Cornish woman, Laura is leading a team of veterans of which 90% have some health issues. She has overseen the demise of European funding and created new opportunities within the county in order for Active Plus to continue its innovative work.

The new opportunities include delivering projects all across Cornwall, helping groups including young people, unemployed individuals, those who are economically inactive, as well as older, lonely and isolated people. All projects are delivered by veterans, many of whom have seen active service and suffer from PTSD or physical injuries, and all are guided by the young but tenacious reins of Laura, who is determined to keep up the good work.
