an you imagine the excitement of turning the key in the lock and opening the door to your dream Cornish home? That dream may be closer than you think as Rosie Cattrell discovered when she talked to some of Cornwall's leading estate agents about the current property market in the Duchy. From page 17, we discover that the market is holding up well. Having stabilised since the pandemic, prices are adjusting and sales are settling, giving both buyers and sellers a little more breathing space. From advice on being 'market ready' so that your home stands out from the crowd, to having a search criteria that isn't overwhelming, this month's cover feature could be the gateway to finding your perfect property. Once you've signed on the dotted line, Cornwall's many experienced home and lifestyle businesses will be waiting in the wings. Christie's Furniture and The Christie's Bed Shop (page 4) are hugely experienced at ensuring the comfort and sleep of discerning customers across Cornwall, while Kitchen Kit (page 39) can help you transform the heart of your home with bespoke designs and state-of-the-art appliances. The outside of your home is as important as the inside and with that in mind, Oltco (page 37) has you covered when it comes to resin-bound paths, patios and driveway. Top that with a new fence from Colour Fence (page 35) and your home will be elevated from good to great. Artistic talent abounds in Cornwall and where better to source those little extra interior touches for your home? Our Art in Focus (page 53) this month shines a spotlight on ceramicist Jack Doherty whose work is inspired by the elements; catch up on Cornwall's latest art news on page 55; or peruse our selection of galleries from across the Duchy from page 56. There's also the chance to win a limited edition print, worth £150, from leading artist John McKinstry – turn to page 47 to be in with a chance of hanging his work 'Gentle Light' on one of your walls. Here at Cornwall Living, we are proud to support a number of Cornish charities. We are looking forward to joining Dive Project Cornwall at its annual fundraising dinner and auction at Boconnoc House on February 8th (page 15). Chef Stephane Delourme will be running the kitchen alongside a number of other renowned chefs from across Cornwall at this unique opportunity to experience Boconnoc's house and gardens while finding out more about the work of Dive Project Cornwall and the positive impact it's having on young people from across the UK. As we go to print a small number of tables are still available so, if you would like to join us in our support of a charity championing the mental health and wellbeing of young people throughout the UK, visit diveprojectcornwall.co.uk for all the details. ...happy reading!

Cornwall Hospice Care’s caring and supportive team are on hand and ready to help following the death of a loved one. With different services designed to give you a safe space to explore and talk about your feelings with the team by your side, there doesn’t need to be a connection to the hospices to access this free support. The charity understands that everyone’s loss is individual to them and this is why there are different ways to access its expertise. For instance, there is one-to-one support available via the Listening Ear Service and the Neighbourhood Hub, with group support sessions including Bereavement Help Points and Walk Talk Kernow. If you are a bereaved adult and enjoy walking with some company, then the Walk Talk Kernow sessions could be for you. Each event supports social connections with others who are also experiencing grief, whilst
Letting your holiday home has never been easier… you enjoy the fresh air and nature around you. It’s usually a stroll for one to two miles and they take place all over the county. One participant explains: “Being by the sea, the walk, the seals – being outside always helps, with caring people to talk to as much or as little as I needed about bereavement and many other topics.” The charity also produces its own podcast, with some episodes focusing on bereavement support and featuring people they’ve helped, like Becky from Wendron (pictured) who was bereaved five years ago, which you can listen to on the website.
We are looking to expand our portfolio across the county, and are dedicated to making the process of sharing your holiday home easy and enjoyable. With tailored services to suit your needs, you can be involved as much or as little as you like, knowing that you and your guests are in safe hands.

ith its stretches of sparkling shoreline, endless miles of fresh green countryside and a unique culture all its own, it’s no wonder that Cornwall is at the top of many a list when it comes to dream places to live. But, along with the rest of the country, 2023 was a tumultuous year for the property market, leaving many feeling uncertain when it came to taking that exhilarating step towards property ownership in Cornwall. However, 2024 holds the promise of a fresh new year and while there are likely still challenges up ahead, a conversation with some of Cornwall’s most prestigious estate agents is sure to help cast a little light on the best way to navigate the current Cornish property market, and how we might weather any storms on the horizon.
“During the pandemic, lots of people who had no previous connection with Cornwall were suddenly buying in the county, but that was unusual. Aside from the occasional spike, the days of Cornish property selling overnight, sight-unseen and over the asking price, are a long and distant memory,” says Josephine Ashby, Managing Partner at John Bray Estate Agents. “It’s become clear to sellers that prices have now adjusted, and the market has settled into a healthier and more manageable state. The impasse has passed!” Josephine continues to explain that buyers today generally have some association with the area, either from holidaying, or due to long-term family ties. There are currently lots of buyers down-sizing or up-sizing within the area and there’s a big demand for properties with annexes or studios to satisfy multi-generational buyers, or as a means of generating an extra income. “Undoubtedly,” she says, “the rise in costs of living and high mortgage rates have had an impact, but

that said, values of very prime coastal property have held firm and sold well, and sensible sellers who are realistic about guide prices are achieving positive results.” As far as supply is concerned for those looking to buy in Cornwall, Josephine explains, this may well be the best time for buyers. Sellers tend to be reluctant to launch a property onto the market in the run up to an election. In 2024 prospective sellers will be waiting to get an idea of when the election is likely to take place before deciding to sell, so a huge increase in supply isn’t likely. “There is still plenty to choose from,” we’re assured, “so buyers can take time to assess and think without feeling rushed into a decision; but they shouldn’t assume they can run away with a steal. Prices may not be going up, but on the whole properties are being marketed at a more realistic level. There may be a little room for negotiation in some cases, but buyers are active and seriously looking, and there is still healthy competition for the best properties.” One particularly impressive property that was guided to a new owner by the expert hands at John Bray Estates in 2023 was Pieds Dans
L’Eau, a striking six-bedroom state-of-the-art waterfront home that truly epitomises a dream Cornish dwelling, with the glittering water of the Fowey Estuary right on the doorstep. “Buyers are, as ever, searching for the ‘Cornish dream’,” says Elowen Grey-Roberts at Philip Martin, “whether that is within walking distance of the beach, in a rural hamlet or the bustling city of Truro. Finding a forever family home is always important and this is at the forefront of most applicants' minds. The current market remains incredibly buoyant and with interest rates set to fall, we hope it will continue to strengthen as the year progresses.”

Sometimes, all it takes is the right person at the right time to find a perfect match between a buyer and a forever home, with a constant demand for high-end housing in Cornwall. “There is plenty of stock available on the market,” Elowen continues, “and this will only increase coming into spring, with the summer months likely to boom as usual.” Naturally, everyone’s idea of a heavenly home in Cornwall is different, and many of us will have different priorities when it comes to selecting properties to view. For instance, location is a key factor to consider – are you interested in having local amenities like a pub, shop and schools? Or do you prefer seclusion and privacy, with no neighbours nearby? Are you prepared to take on any work that might need to be done, and the costs that go with that? Perhaps a garage or a big garden is a must? These are all things to consider when it comes to your budget before beginning your search, not to mention the resale factors that come with all these ideals.
For those seeking the cosy Cornish cottage idyll, one property currently on Philip Martin’s books is Ty Gwyn, a charming detached three-bedroom period cottage in Mylor Bridge, complete with enchanting creek views in this sought-after village location – a rare opportunity indeed! Or, if a classic country retreat is more to your liking, The Fields might be more your style. The stunning three-bedroom home set within an acre of grounds provides a beautiful semi-rural location for anyone looking to get away from it all, whilst still in walking distance of village facilities. If only the rarest of gems is likely to entice you, Cornwall is certainly a hotspot for ‘best-in-class’ properties, which the Rohrs & Rowe team are very well acquainted with. While the market has been a little bumpy over the past year, when an unmissable opportunity presents itself it’ll more than likely be snapped up, as Martyn Rohrs kindly explains: “These types of

properties, across all price ranges, will still be highly sought after due to their rarity factor. The premium end of the housing market is much less reliant on mortgage finance and so interest and bank rate fluctuations don’t tend to dictate the market in the same way.” “While the supply of high-quality property in Cornwall is always low,” Matthew Rowe adds, “we expect an increase in relation to the exceptionally low availability seen in recent years. The sellers who didn’t manage to sell in 2023 will be returning to the market and there will also be a range of new sellers as well. The market has switched from previous years, where it was a seller’s market to one where there are less buyers in the market, so overall, if a property is poorly marketed and incorrectly priced this will translate into it taking longer to sell.” One property that sold in 2023 was Goenrounsen House (below), a period home that offered privacy and the rather unique

opportunity for multigenerational living as well as potential for extra income. Finished to an exceptionally high standard, and with the vendor’s paperwork all in place, an easy sale was inevitable. Another example, Ansells, set in the stunning location of The Roseland, offered effortlessly efficient and stylish accommodation with incredible views and easy access to the beach. Seaways in Porthpean was another unmissable chance for a Cornish haven, snapped up for its great views and beautifully finished accommodation complete with a gentle stroll to the beach – another glimpse into the type of dream homes finding their new owners at the hands of Rohrs & Rowe. With such a range of lifestyles and houses here in the Duchy, it can be difficult to know where to start if you’re not sure what you’re looking for, but Manager of Jackie Stanley Estate Agents, Simon Poole offers some words of advice to help get you started on your dream-home journey: “The first thing to do

• Make sure all your paperwork is on order before entering the market. • Work with your estate agent to agree on a realistic price based on comparable evidence. • Make sure your home is well presented, clean and tidy, with any small repair works completed.

• Ensure you are happy with the photographs your estate agent has prepared; these should show your home at its very best. • Be flexible with time frames for the best chance of receiving an offer that works for you.

Read, Watch, EXPERIENCE
It’s never been easier for those who love Cornwall to read, watch and experience for themselves the Ultimate Lifestyle By The Sea. From regular email updates and online blogs, to Cornish video content and incredible monthly competitions giving you the chance to win your own little piece of Cornwall, even if you can’t lay your hands on a copy of our monthly issues, our multi-media approach means you can access the best of Cornwall Living anywhere, at any time.
READ would be to narrow down your search criteria – ask yourself exactly what you are looking for before you even start looking. Cornwall has such an eclectic mix of properties and varied locations, so you want to have an idea of what will work best for you and your budget before you start viewing homes.” With an optimistic outlook on 2024, and having already seen an increase in buyer activity and confidence in the market, there’s no reason this won’t continue to strengthen as we move into spring and beyond. When it comes to selling, Simon is happy to lend a little of his expertise to those preparing to enter the market: “Being ‘market ready’ has never been more important, from making sure your property is presented to its best, dealing with any repairs or small improvements and making sure all building regulations, certificates and guarantees are in order and in place.” Another thing to think about is comparing your home with other properties that have sold in your area to get a good overview of price. One thing to be wary of is agents offering high values and low fees, but previous sales evidence is a good way to offer you reassurance. Taking advice from a trusted lawyer to go over your paperwork before going to the market will help you to avoid any expensive issues and time delays when the time comes, making for a quick and easy completion. Ultimately, preparation and presentation should be very high up on your list of priorities if you’re planning to sell your home, not forgetting the support you’ll receive from one of the Duchy’s leading estate agents.

W
hen embarking on a multi-phased construction project, whether it be home improvement or a complete restoration it can be all too easy to become daunted and overwhelmed at the scale and sheer amount of work that lies ahead. Sometimes all we need is the reassurance that our vision will become a reality, such reassurance often found in people who keep their passion for beautiful spaces at the heart of the construction. At Vespa Cornwall, this rings true in the form of the dedicated team who provide bespoke end-to-end project management across multi-staged building projects, from new builds to conversions. Founded by Ashley Riches alongside brothers Jon and Ben Drew, they first met through sport and bonded over a love of carpentry and construction. This led to them wanting to create a company that allowed them to pour their passion into others' project dreams. Working seamlessly with clients, planners and architects, the team at Vespa Cornwall ensure a singular transition from design to construction, priding themselves on craftsmanship and originality. The team consists of ten tradesmen whose skills span across carpentry, joinery, masonry, groundwork, rendering, plastering, plumbing
and electrical work which means you can feel reassured that Vespa has complete control of any aspects of work within a project scale. One happy client says: “I call them the team but they were all like our extended family. We are very happy in what they've done and achieved here with the build at Horizons. We always found them to be approachable, taking time to answer any queries, and we hope we’ll be able to work with them again in the not-so-distant future on further projects.” Despite the level of expertise on hand, Ashley, Jon and Ben are still heavily involved as directors. This direct involvement all the way from planning to completion means that you don’t have to worry about dealing with project managers or supervisors. With their name on the work, it’s important to the founders that they feel it with their own hands so the finished product is nothing less than what you envisioned when you first embarked on your project.

SPRUCE UP
Enjoy a beautiful garden all year round, no matter what the weather throws at it.
F
…in most residential gardens the fencing is one of the most prominent features, particularly in the autumn and winter as plants die back.
or the garden lovers amongst us, this time of year can be full of anticipation for the spring, but why wait until the warmer months to enjoy your outside space, even if from inside? Creating a perfect garden when we are in that transitional period between seasons can be a challenge, particularly when the Duchy is being ravaged by wind and rain. Despite this, ColourFence has been supplying and installing fence systems for over 20 years, with over 100,000 fences installed in gardens throughout the UK designed to resist the impact of changing seasons. The range of fences from ColourFence look beautiful in spring and throughout the year while having the ability to face the harsh conditions of winter. Not only have they been tested to withstand gusts of 130mph, but they are also fireproof and weatherproof. Made with Colourbond steel, these fences won’t leave you with large repair bills after a storm nor will they rust, peel, rot, wrap or require fresh paint or maintenance during their 25-year guarantee. When asked what customers like best about ColourFence, Director of the Cornwall branch Olly Daglish explains: “Without a doubt, it’s the no-maintenance aspect of the fence and its longevity. It's storm proof too, which makes it the perfect match for our Cornish winters. Additionally, the selection of colours gives the garden a beautiful and stylish backdrop.” With a choice of green, blue, cream, brown and the new addition of grey, customise your fence with a plain or trellis top then
simply fit and forget; your environmentally friendly fence will do all the work for you. When considering how your fence will impact the look of your garden, Olly continues: “It depends, to a degree, on the garden itself but in most residential gardens the fencing is one of the most prominent features, particularly in the autumn and winter as plants die back. A poorly maintained fence can easily make the whole garden look scruffy and uncared for. With ColourFence as a backdrop, your garden stays looking good all year round." For complete peace of mind, the team of professional installers at ColourFence can both supply and install your new fence, ensuring a professional job from start to finish, so your garden looks beautiful all year round.

A complete
TRANSFORMATION Breathe life into your space with a resin-bound driveway, patio or path.
A
s the UK’s leading resin-bound driveway specialist, Oltco is dedicated to providing outstanding service from consultation to completion and beyond. With innovative resin solutions across the UK, the team is particularly proud of its connection to the south west having worked across Cornwall to transform driveways, patios, pathways, balconies and pool surrounds for both domestic and commercial projects. Just one of its many installations included the creation of pathways at the Eden Project, one of the Duchy’s most famous attractions for both tourists and locals alike. To help support the number of visitors that come to the beautiful biomes each year, the team needed to create pathways that could withstand high foot traffic while being eco-friendly; this would also reflect the mission of both the Eden Project and Oltco as environmentally driven organisations that put sustainability at its core. Oltco started work here in 2020 and has since used the equivalent of 1.7 million recycled straws on the pathways installed at the Eden Project. This is, however, just a drop in the ocean when you look at Oltco’s larger impact. In June 2023 Oltco hit the equivalent of 500 million recycled straws in its Recycle
Bound projects across the UK and Channel Islands. Developed to be even stronger than other resin solutions, Recycle Bound has a higher tensile strength with the ability to hold more weight. It also happens to be the strongest system Oltco has ever tested, with a 20-year guarantee and 15-year guarantee on resin-bound solutions. As well as the Eden Project, Oltco has completed installations at various other visitor attractions such as Bodmin Jail, RHS Garden Harlow Carr, the location of the G7 summit, Carbis Bay, Blackpool Sealife Centre, Donkey Sanctuary and a multitude of National Trust locations. Whether you are after a commercial, residential or hospitality project, Oltco has the experience and expertise to guide you through your resin refresh as we embrace the changes that come with 2024.

STAY Samphire, Holywell Bay
T
ucked behind the dunes of Holywell Bay, Samphire is a stylish, dog-friendly home for eight, with bucketloads of cosy coastal charm. Arranged over three floors, there’s a contemporary, open-plan living area, and four stylish, spacious bedrooms, including a penthouse room with wonderful sea views from the balcony — the perfect spot to watch the sun sink into the sea. The sunny garden is brilliant for entertaining with its raised deck and outdoor dining area, with the luxurious addition of private parking. Exiting Samphire, wander through the dunes to a mile of beach where you can learn to ride the waves at one of the surf schools, paddle around the craggy coastline on a kayak, or master the art of sandboarding in the dunes. At low tide you can explore sea caves and discover the ancient holy well after which this beach is named, or walk the coast path in either direction for epic hikes — wild and windswept in winter, flower-filled in summer. Back home, rinse salty skin under the outside surf shower before firing up the barbecue for a feast in the secluded garden of Samphire.

ocated in the beautiful north Devon countryside, just 13 miles from the coastline of Bude, Maggie’s Place was bought in January of 2023 as a newly converted one-bedroom barn conversion, just ten minutes away from the Cornwall border. Furnished to a high standard, a love for animals, nature and wildlife is reflected throughout the property. Enjoy the luxury of underfloor heating, a fully furnished kitchen, shower, a sizeable TV with Freeview and WiFi and a large outdoor space with seating for you and your pooch. On clear nights it makes the perfect spot to relax underneath the beautiful Milky Way. You can spend the next day exploring Bradworthy, a lovely village that lies close by and is complete with everything you could possibly need during your stay, including a pub, butchers, vets, doctors and convenience store. Take your four-legged friend to Bradworthy Moor for a stroll or spend the afternoon fishing or at the watersports centre. If you prefer to spend time in the water, head to Bude Sea Pool for a refreshing dip before returning to Maggie’s Place for another night under the stars.

With a little guidance from chef patron, Jude Kereama, easing our way to healthier minds and bodies has never been so delicious.

ith the indulgence of the festive celebrations well and truly behind us, many of us are looking to start the new year off on the right foot. Now that the feasting is over, it can be difficult to get back into the rhythm of a balanced routine, and as we seek out healthy habits to carry forward to 2024, I thought I’d share my thoughts on how good food can help. The excess of the festive season soon takes its toll on the body, and at this time of year we all start making promises of a healthier diet and more exercise. In the restaurants, we always have healthier alternatives on our menus. For instance, at Kota Kai we have cleansing broths and warming curries that help give you a health boost. The food at Kota Kai has a lot of Asian influence and it is these spices and herbs that add a medicinal aspect to our dishes. Ingredients like seaweeds, chilli, ginger, garlic, citrus, turmeric, black pepper, cumin, coriander seeds, cinnamon and cayenne pepper (to name a few) have potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Also, some of these ingredients are said to add nutrient absorption and reduce gastrointestinal discomfort as they stimulate digestive enzymes.

LEFT INSET
Chef patron of Kota and Kota Kai, Jude Kereama
There is even research suggesting that curry consumption may help protect against age-related cognitive decline. I have always believed in healthy eating and making sure that we have a balanced diet. There is a lot of research into how we can eat ourselves to healthier minds and bodies and I will use this information to write some new dishes for the new menu. At Kota, we are always using the best organic ingredients available to us, with dishes that cover all the best ingredients over our six-course tasting menu. Our vegetarian and vegan menus are available every day, but if you book and tell us a day in advance we’ll make sure to create and prepare your dishes to the best that we possibly can. We utilise similar base ingredients to Kota Kai, so those same medicinal properties will be in our dishes at Kota too. We also have an extensive range of ferments, seaweed and pickles in various forms that also add extra flavour and health benefits. I myself will be trying to get back to normal after stuffing myself for the whole festive period, getting back to cooking healthy dishes like my brassica, cannellini bean and root vegetable stew with kale pesto (a real hearty dish) and just trying to get as many vitamins and minerals as possible through food. Shellfish like mussels, clams and oysters are absolutely delicious at the moment and provide lean protein which also takes very little time to cook, not forgetting that game
birds are in season too – a real treat as they are so seasonal and again provide a tasty lean protein option. Cornwall has one of the best snipe and woodcock shoots in the UK and they are revered as the best and tastiest birds to eat. With both restaurants having had a short break over January, you can expect exciting things when Kota reopens on 7th February and Kota Kai on 8th February after some major refurbishment – we can’t wait to see how everyone likes the changes as we start the year with a new look, new menus, new cocktails and a new style of service. We will also be opening a lot more than we usually do! At Kota, the changes are behind the scenes as some new equipment adds a new style and flavour to the cooking with the addition of a Josper Grill. I have been trialling the Josper to see what it can do and I am thrilled with the results of the food I’ve tried so far. The Josper grill can reach temperatures of up to 400 degrees Celsius and adds a wonderful smoky tinge to everyday dishes. I think it is going to be a game changer. We are also keen to utilise some new ingredients and techniques that we have been keeping up our sleeve for the new season, so it’s a very exciting year ahead indeed. Bon Appetite!
I have always believed in healthy eating and making sure that we have a balanced diet.

ART
Art in Focus FINDING PERFECTION IN PORCELAIN Ceramicist Jack Doherty works in his studio gallery in Trinity House by the harbour in Penzance. His unique porcelain vessels are made from china clay and copper, two minerals from the Cornish Landscape. Thrown on the potter's wheel, then carved and shaped when the clay is soft, his work reflects the fluidity of the material and physicality of making. Jack has developed his technique using a soda kiln to fire his work. This process creates a rich and unexpected palette of colour and surface texture. The elemental aesthetic of his work is created by the fusion of fire and soda in the intense heat of the kiln, leaving behind a subtle palette of smoky grey, lemon, russet and turquoise.

How pottery shaped the life of Jack Doherty
Connecting with nature Bridging the gap between perception and what lies beyond, art offers an insight into the eye of the artist while giving us the freedom to forge our own connections. With its rolling countryside and rugged coast, Cornwall provides never-ending inspiration for the artists that inhabit the beautiful landscape. Just one gallery that celebrates the relationship between art and the natural world is the Jackson Foundation Gallery in St Just. Run by husband and wife team, Zinzi and Fynn Tucker, the gallery is currently home to two breathtaking exhibitions, the first of which, titled The Fowey was created by Kurt Jackson. Having spent over 40 years working along many different watercourses, Kurt uses this exhibition to focus on one of Cornwall’s most iconic rivers, the River Fowey. Over the last few years Jackson immersed himself in the elements on a beautiful, diverse and richly rewarding journey to create this new series
of paintings; think glassy surfaces, gentle shimmering waters and outstretched branches lining the water’s edge. The second exhibition, Transforming Tomorrow: Friends of the Earth’s ongoing battle for climate justice observes our relationship with nature through another lens. Presenting a unique look at the long history of the world’s largest grassroots environmental network, this exhibition takes a look at the organisation’s history through images of campaigns past and present. Its story and vision for the future are told through the collection of photographs, memorabilia, props and publications spanning more than 50 years. Free to the public, this fantastic space offers an insight into the world we all too often find ourselves taking for granted. For more information call 01736 787638 or email info@kurtjackson.com
Working from his studio in Cornwall, potter and ceramic artist Jack Doherty has gained an international reputation, exhibiting his unique work extensively in the UK and abroad. Jack works with one clay body, one mineral and one single firing technique. Over the years his working practice has become simpler and more refined in the belief that stripping away the unnecessary can produce work with complexity and depth. Through this singleness of process, he is able to obtain a complex, multi-layering of surface texture and colour, whilst remaining true to the form. His ceramic vessels are represented in many public collections including the Irish Contemporary Ceramics Collection at the Hunt Museum, Limerick, the National Museum of Ireland and the Ulster Museum. In 2016 he received the Janet Mansfield Memorial Award in recognition of his work with soda-fired porcelain. For more information email jack@dohertyporcelain.com or visit www.dohertyporcelain.com

EVERYTHING With a firm belief in the power of experiences, Isles of Scilly Travel asks us, what ignites our love of travel?
I
t’s common knowledge amongst the team at Isles of Scilly Travel that you don’t need to travel far to expand your horizons. After all, sometimes the most memorable experiences aren’t that far from home. Imagine a short break that was a true escape from everyday life, doused with a touch of adventure. A break where you could push yourself outside of your comfort zone and learn new things, where you could connect with people and nature while experiencing true freedom. Let us introduce you to the magical Isles of Scilly, where you can find all of this and so much more. Lying just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall, the islands are easily close enough to visit for a short staycation, as thousands of people do each year. These tropical, sand-fringed islands are the most south-westerly point of the UK, beautifully wild and unspoilt. There are five inhabited islands, each unique with its own magic. You could be forgiven for thinking you had flown long-haul rather than a short journey from the mainland. There’s no mass-market tourism here; this is what ‘local’ looks like. It’s as authentic as travel gets. But, as remote
as the islands are, there is no shortage of experiences on offer. As far as activities are concerned, these small islands really pack a punch! From the quintessential Scilly activity of island-hopping to snorkelling with resident seals, making your own island gin to horse riding along empty beaches, joining a wildlife boat safari to exploring by kayak, bike hire to wild yoga – the Isles of Scilly really do have something for everyone. What’s more, they’re famously dog friendly, so make sure to bring your four-legged friends along for the adventure – your pooch is welcome on board Skybus and Scillonian III. If you’re seeking paradise in 2024, whatever your travel needs might be, Isles of Scilly Travel has got you covered. You can fly with Skybus year-round from Land’s End Airport or sail on board Scillonian III from Penzance between March and November.

EXPERIENCE
DID YOU KNOW? The Isles of Scilly is the UK’s largest archipelago. With five inhabited islands, 140 or so more provide a safe haven for wildlife and seabirds. It's a place quite unlike any other, so if you're looking for an experience to remember for years to come, why not consider the Isles of Scilly for your next adventure?

A
s we edge further into 2024 it can be all too easy to forget about those resolutions that we so willingly made at the start of the year. Perhaps you wanted to challenge yourself to try something new, spend more time with friends, or simply get outdoors in the fresh air. One social enterprise that allows you to do all of these at once is Tight Lines, a fully functioning Community Interest Company founded by Cornish shore fishing guide Justin Keight. This non-profit organisation aims to provide mental health support to the people of Cornwall using sea angling as the vehicle. Back in June 2023 when the sun was shining and the temperatures were warmer, Tight Lines began holding social fishing get-togethers, inviting anyone who was interested in fishing or what Tight Lines was trying to achieve, to come along and discover more. This first session in Falmouth was an enormous success with over 30 people including locals, those living further afield and people just visiting joining in with a group of Tightliners to fish a variety of methods. Mackerel were caught in abundance and later hot smoked by Chef Justin so everyone could enjoy the fruits of their labour after an afternoon of catching and community; and so the Social Fishing Sessions were born.
These continued throughout the summer months, introducing fishing to beginners and reintroducing the sport to people looking to return to an old hobby. More than discovering or rediscovering a passion for fishing and spending time with others, sea angling from the beautiful Cornish coast can help boost mood and mindfulness with nature being shown to have a positive impact on mental wellbeing. Now with a hard-core band of anglers of all ages who enjoy the company of these sessions as much as the sport itself, the group has time to talk fishing with likeminded souls, swap ideas and techniques and pass on experience to the newer anglers amongst the group. Whether you’re looking to improve your wellness and mental health or simply surround yourself with other angling enthusiasts, we can’t think of anywhere better to do this than by the Cornish coast.

CHARITY
TAKING THE
plunge ABOVE Getting ready to start at Newquay Harbour
EXPERIENCE Firmly on the Newquay Twixmas calendar, plans are already underway for a bigger and better New Year’s Day Dip for CLIC 2025. Make sure to put the date in your diary and challenge yourself in aid of this wonderful charity.
Over 500 swimmers welcomed in 2024 with an icy dip all for a good cause.
O
n a crisp winter’s day, the last thing you might think about is plunging into the chilly Cornish waters, yet this New Year’s Day saw over 500 swimmers gather eagerly at Newquay Harbour. This year marked the tenth anniversary of DIP for CLIC, a charity dip organised by Jos and Andy Cole to raise as many funds as possible for Young Lives vs Cancer. This is the only charity in the UK with social workers who dedicate their time to provide tailored psychosocial support to children and young people with cancer and their families. This year saw dippers wearing an array of colourful fancy dress costumes and swimwear for the occasion with a spokesperson for Newquay Young Lives vs Cancer saying: “It is fantastic that so many members of our community support our event and what a great way to start 2024. Some of our Dippers have taken part since the very first DIP, and it is great to see so many old friends return time and time again.” As anticipation for the big moment built, an official countdown began and shortly after, dippers ran into the water where they paddled, dipped and swam under the watchful eyes of Newquay Surf Life Saving Lifeguards. The willing participants were joined by the largest crowd to date who clapped and cheered encouragingly until the very last swimmer came out of the water.
A total of more than £4,500 was raised for Young Lives vs Cancer including entry money, sponsorship and donations which will all go towards providing care and support for children receiving treatment and their families. A cancer diagnosis is life changing and the impact of cancer is far more than medical, often affecting education, social lives and mental health. Because of the differences between this diagnosis in children and adults, children often need special treatment in certain hospitals miles away; the nearest principal treatment centre for Cornish children is 165 miles away in Bristol, so these funds are guaranteed to get the young people of Cornwall into the right hands.
