Unearth St Agnes’
hidden foodie gem
Have you visited the Aggie recently? Located on the stunning north coast in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, St Agnes has a fascinating history with its mining and seafaring heritage. Part of this rich background, at least since the 17th century, is The St Agnes Hotel. For nearly four centuries an inn has occupied this site. When tin mining in the area brought the railway to St Agnes, the need for a commercial hotel arose and now, the ‘Aggie’ (as locals know it) is a traditional, lively pub, bed and breakfast, parts of which are quintessentially Cornish with bare stone walls and tiled oors ituated at the heart of the village, the vibe here is relaxed and authentic, with menus offering an eclectic mix of dishes to tempt even the fussiest of taste buds, and a smart-casual dining room that’s great for occasions. In the summer, the large decking is just perfect for drinks in the sun – why not stop by and enjoy your morning coffee before hitting the beach? The Aggie is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, offering a number of traditional pub favourites alongside more unique dishes, based on andlord erry s surfing travels around the world.
Tucked away on the side of Quay Road, leading do n to t gnes beach, you ll find the uir y, beach-hut style café that is Genki. With its beautiful secluded garden, you can relax in the suntrap and be enveloped by nature, whilst enjoying the delicious indulgences the café has to offer.
ou ill also find erry s ife, Nathalie s aribbean in uence on the menu and, as Jerry tells us: “with two young children, we like to provide some healthy but realistic dishes for kids, too.” With exceptional food, coffee, monthly charity quiz nights and the popular Thali nights (booking recommended!), plus six cosy en-suite bed and breakfast suites, if you’re planning a trip to the north coast, be sure to make the St Agnes Hotel a part of your itinerary. For more information call 01872 552307 or visit www.stagneshotel.co.uk
Genki places a focus on high quality, fresh and local ingredients. As well as Falmouth-based Yallah Coffee, you can enjoy a refreshing smoothie or smoothie bowl packed with nutrients, a delicious stac of a es, or one of the day’s homemade cakes – including vegan and gluten free options. What’s more, smoothies, salads and sandwiches can be made fresh and bespoke to your preferences! Open from 10am until 4pm, Tuesday to Friday, plus 10am until 5pm on weekends (daily during the summer holidays), with themed foodie evenings during the summer and bacon bap barbeques from 10am on Sundays; if you’re a foodie, Genki is a must visit. Think stunning views, sheltered coves, superb surfing, sandy beaches, excellent golf courses and long coastal walks atop the South West Coast Path. Not to mention that the offering of restaurants and independent retailers here means you can en oy some of the finest food and ares that Cornwall has to offer. As you might expect in such a beautiful part of the world, the property here is highly desirable, offering owners the perfect base from which to capitalise on the Cornish lifestyle. We have even had good offers on some off mar et properties n the first uarter of the year we sold over £3.5million worth of property in the area, and have many cash buyers looking for property priced between £400,000 and £4million. The supply of good property to the market is generally low this year, so we are in need of more property to supply the demand. We’re always looking to add to our uni ue property portfolio The Heritage Coast is probably most famous for its spectacular beaches and orld reno ned surfing hot spots you ll have trouble just deciding which beach to visit Ne uay s istral is probably the most famous, artyn continues, but there are many fantastic beaches to choose from along this stretch of coast that are just as popular, like Watergate Bay and Holywell Bay. Then there’s the Seven Bays area a little further north, here you ll also be spoilt for choice But it’s not just sea and sand that draw so many to the shores of the Heritage Coast. It is a fantastic area for wildlife too, with numerous spots to visit and observe seals and seabirds, as well as dolphins, which can

What’s more, there’s a multitude of luxury hotels, many of which command scintillating views of the sea hese are e ually perfect for visitors as they are for those who live here, offering the chance to en oy some rest and rela ation many with their own award winning spas! This part of the county has the ability to make you feel like you are on holiday, even when you live here. There’s something about the rela ed, surfie vibe that rubs off on everything and everyone, and that makes it such an appealing place to call home. Martyn and Matthew bring a wealth of local knowledge to the table, having successfully sold many of the area’s best houses. Back to removals and it’s fair to say that Britannia Lanes offers a comprehensive removals and storage service. As Managing Director, Mark Lane, explains: here s no one si e fits all here ur approach is centred on listening to our clients’ needs and then accommodating them as best as possible. This often includes informing them on the alternative solutions that they may not have thought of – giving them options, to either save money or reduce the hassle for them.” But where the removals service gets really smart is in Mark and the team's video surveys. Using specially developed software, the client gives a tour of their house via their smartphone or tablet. Mark tells us: “We get a very clear understanding of their needs and concerns aving some face to face interaction, albeit through technology, helps provide a personal touch – we’re not just an anonymous company!” Using the survey, Mark uses his experience to work out the number of boxes and overall

volume required, creating a detailed itinerary. “It’s an extremely effective way of identifying any issues, such as items that will require extra special care, in advance of arrival. Video surveys make our estimates much more accurate, and also mean our crews are far better informed on what to expect, and the kind of packaging they’ll need.” So, if you’re thinking of making a move or have commercial needs that Britannia Lanes can help with, why not head to the new website and go from there? It may just be the smartest move you ever make!

state agency in Cornwall, according to My Place in Cornwall, is much more than simply helping clients buy and sell property. It’s about embracing the local area, understanding it inside out and being passionate about not just the properties they sell, but the local communities, amenities and the lifestyle that the Duchy has to offer. Cornwall is blessed with a great selection of unique homes and My Place In Cornwall
define a uni ue home as one hich has characteristics that set it apart. It could be picture postcard view across the landscape, the period features of a village cottage, or stunning architecture that oozes the wow factor. "We recognise 'unique' as something that deserves to be presented at its very best by using stunning imagery, stylish videos and thought provoking drone views. Our database of buyers come to us because they know they're going to find something out of the ordinary, a property that they will be proud to call their home," says Managing Director, Richard Yeo. When you become a client of My Place In Cornwall, the process is all about achieving the desired outcome for you and your family. "We want you to feel reassured, comfortable with the process of selling and most of all, we want to minimise any stress that comes with selling your home," explains Richard. Importantly, Richard and the team know the local north Cornwall area extremely well. The agency was born in Wadebridge back in 2008 and many of the staff live in the local area. During the summer months, they love nothing more than family time spent on the stunning local beaches and it's this level of local knowledge and hands-on experience of the

area that can help you to find the right buyer for your property. Of course, style and substance is an important part of presenting your property at its very best, which is why My Place In Cornwall utilise the latest modern marketing tools to proliferate the reach of a property. “We’ve built an enviable database of prospective buyers over the last ten years, both locally, nationally, even internationally,” explains Candice Nicholson, My Place’s Sales and Business Development Manager. “This helps us promote your property to the widest possible reach, enabling a sales process that can help you achieve the right offer from the right buyer.” What’s more, this fantastic Cornish agency recently launched their brand new website, combining these ingredients to encompass all the crucial elements required to run a successful agency. Candice continues: “Modern marketing is about engaging with your audience and creating content that brings them back time and time again. We like to think that we help our audience to aspire to make the most of a unique lifestyle in a unique county.” While modern estate agency may have seen a shift towards a ‘hands-off’, DIY approach
with cheaper fees and, often, no commission, My Place in Cornwall chooses to stick to their core belief that unique property deserves the support of a professional and pro-active agency to achieve the very best results. As Candice puts it: “When you become a client of ours, you can rest assured that you’ll always receive a five star, a ard inning service here all that matters to us is that we achieve the best result.” Richard, Candice and the team are fortunate to have an impressive database of past and current clients, each of whom use their service because they trust it to relieve their fears, concerns or stress levels when selling their property. Many are repeat customers too, who clearly have a lot of trust in My Place in Cornwall. “This is why our brand will never join the crowd in offering ‘cheap’ fees and a reduced level of service, ichard finishes “We believe there are a multitude of property owners who appreciate and are happy to invest in a premium service to achieve the right result for them.” If you are considering marketing your property, you can get started today by booking your free market appraisal with My Place In Cornwall, where you'll learn all about how Richard and the team can utilise the very best in modern marketing to help you achieve the results you deserve.

ogs are very much part of our families and in Cornwall we’re lucky to have a brilliant selection of varied walks allowing us to enjoy the beauty of the county and give our dogs the walk of their dreams. On the dog-friendly Heritage Coast there are beautiful beaches and miles of stunning footpath walks along the South West Coast ath but you ll find one similarity among both; a distinct lack of bins, only to be expected considering how awkward they would be to empty. We hear from Dicky Bag owner, Mandy, who tells us: “I noticed this problem and the resulting issue of dog mess and dumped bags over 10 years ago and, being a bit of a mini crusader, decided that rather than moan about the situation, I would attempt to resolve the problem. All the excuses for this bad behaviour re ected on a lac of bins, so to me the solution was a portable airtight bin that fits to a lead, bag or person and means you could guarantee there’s always a bin when and where you need it.” To create Dicky Bag, Mandy approached a local company based in Lostwithiel who specialise in high-end neoprene products and asked them to make a prototype – and

they still use the same company today. “We even pitched our product idea to the BBC Dragons in 2013 but for them to be interested in us, they wanted to stop production in Cornwall and relocate it abroad so they could have higher returns. My principals are too strong and I point blank refused their suggestion,” Mandy tells us. “I’m about solving a problem, not becoming rich and I think that’s why we never got our 15 minutes of fame!” Dicky Bag is a small family business that’s got to where it is through hard work and perseverance. The company is also an o cial partner of National ar s, ey contributor to the N cotland campaign and the product has been recommended by teve en inson, advisor to the ennel Club on BBC’s Country File Autumn Diaries, stating: “When you make it easy for people to do the right thing, they will.”

DOGGY DAYCARE Provide your dog with the attention and love they deserve with Duchy Dogs Daycare.

ocated just outside of Redruth (between Falmouth and Truro), you’ll find Duchy Dogs Daycare, a dog-sitting service that couldn’t be further from the kennel environment, where your four-legged friend can enjoy a purpose-built facility with six acres of land to explore. You can relax knowing your pooch will be loo ed after and supervised by a ualified dog daycare trainer, competent in pack management with basic training included throughout the day. It’s like a nursery is for children but for dogs, and is council licensed and insured with secure fencing enabling safe off-lead freedom. There’s even an edible garden featuring plants that dogs can eat which have different properties for health and wellbeing. We hear from owner Kirsty Stevenson who tells us: “Our customers love the fact that their dogs are able to socialise and are taught how to behave around other dogs, they’re always tired when they come home, and excited to come back to daycare to see all their furry friends.” The focus on behaviour training and exercise at Duchy Dogs has meant that customers see less unwanted behaviours at home. It also means your pup has improved manners
when out and about around other dogs and generally will be more docile thanks to lots of interaction during the day. Duchy Dogs stands out from other dog care services thanks to the cage and kennel free environment. “We are a small, bespoke service which means each dog gets training and one-to-one attention throughout the day,” Kirsty explains. “What we provide is ideal for people who don’t want to leave their dog alone at home for a long time due to work or going out for the day somewhere their dog can’t go.” Duchy Dogs also offer limited spaces to daycare dogs for home boarding, should you wish to go away for an extended period of time. This service means your dog can stay with Kirsty as part of the family in her cottage on the outskirts of Redruth, going to daycare to play with other dogs during the day and going on outings to the beach at the weekend. The great thing about this is that it’s a home from home environment.

hen the sun is shining and the Atlantic takes on that enticing opalescent hue that you’d usually associate with the tropics, what could be more tempting than jumping in? With this in mind, here are just a few ideas to add to your itinerary during your trip to the Heritage Coast.
Hit the waves It wouldn’t be an adventure holiday in Cornwall if you didn’t at least have a go at surfing, especially seeing as the Duchy is home to some of the best surf breaks in the world. Enlist with St Ives Surf School (stivessurfschool.co.uk) and you’ll quickly catch the bug, learning from some of the country’s best, most innovative and progressive surfers! Alternatively, if you’re looking to hit the waves that are home to the annual Boardmasters surf competition, Headland Hotel (headlandhotel.co.uk), which nestles above the waves at Fistral beach, could well be the perfect base for your adventure. The hotel has its own surf school – the Surf Sanctuary – with racks of boards, warm 5mm wetsuits, plus warm, clean and dry changing rooms and hot showers – just the ticket after a session in the cool Atlantic breakers. Watergate Bay, just up the coast, is another fantastic place to learn with help from Westcountry Surf School (surfingschool.co.uk). Exceptional instructors and surf siblings, Joel and Naomi, have been surfing from a very young age. With global beach lifeguarding experiences, having been coaching since they were teenagers, you know you’ll be in safe hands!

On the calm waters of the estuary, if you’re really feeling like pushing the boat out, why not try a eboarding or even a esurfing harlie tells us a esurfing is an addictive and e hilarating combination of surfing and a eboarding asically it s li e surfing an endless ave, and it s a huge amount of fun

OF FLAVOUR
Drawing from Cornwall’s rich natural larder, we meet Dan Cowell, founder of superb Cornish catering company, Dan’s Cornish Kitchen.
D
an’s Cornish Kitchen is a bespoke catering solutions business based in Cornwall and run by chef patron, Dan Cowell. Dan launched the business in 2016, after spotting a gap in the market for luxury private chef services in very different sectors of the luxury Cornish holiday market, as well as in the local community. Dan gre up surfing, fishing and sailing on the north coast of Cornwall. He tells us: “I used to forage for mussels with my father and we’d regularly go off to Exmoor, hunting game and tickling trout!” After studying for a GNVQ in Kitchen and Larder Management at Camborne College, Dan has gone on to cook all over the orld, utilising some of the planet s finest ingredients. He’s been Head Chef in hotels in the French Alps and has even travelled as far as Australia, heading up a kitchen team there, too! He has extensive experience cooking in private homes too, as well as helping local restaurants and businesses to build strong local support. “The key to a successful menu,” says Dan, “is using local produce that is in season and eeping avours uncomplicated through different cooking techniques, giving the customer an extra sense of location and really showing off the produce.” He is a
particular fan of cooking Cornish seafood and shellfish, and can offer seafood and shellfish coo ery lessons either in the privacy of your own home, or at a location throughout Cornwall. He can also provide bespoke tasting menus for exclusive dinner parties, and what could be better than working your way through all the classic seafood you love, before washing it down ith a ute of champagne magine mussels in garlic and prosecco, pan seared scallops, lobster, crab, mackerel and sardines, all served to you and your guests in bespoke and individual ways Dan’s Cornish Kitchen brings more than 25 years of catering experience to the table and, whether it’s a luxury dinner party or a 60th birthday party; a bespoke meal for a rare family gathering or even a special, once-ina-lifetime wedding breakfast, Dan offers a menu that caters to your exact requirements and occasion. REACH YOUR LETTING
l a i t n e t po
With Cornwall’s staycation market only set to grow, we ask George at Cornish Traditional Cottages for his top holiday home tips.
O
nce your property is ‘out there’, George explains: “enquiries should start to come in. Although not all of them will result in a booking, you should treat them all as potential guests. This means responding professionally and promptly. Always aim for a maximum of a few hours, same day if you can. Go that extra mile by offering extra information, or try to accommodate people by suggesting alternative arrangements if your property can’t cater for them on their chosen dates.” The next key moment is when your guests arrive. “You may like to organise a personal meet-and-greet. This gives you the chance to get to know them, introduce them to your holiday home and answer any questions in person. If this isn’t practical or desirable, make sure you’ve provided clear instructions to make the arrival process as simple as possible.” Next, it’s time to get their feedback. “This is crucial. You could keep a guestbook in a clearly visible place and add a note to the front cover asking guests to write their comments. Afterwards, type them out and include them in an email to your guest, asking for permission to use it on your website and/ or marketing material.” As much as you’d love to read glowing comments from start to finish, the reality is that reviews rarely rave all the time, so it’s important to know how to respond. “Check
regularly for new reviews and respond as soon as you can. Always respond to a review, no matter how glowing (or otherwise) it is, and always start by thanking the reviewer.” George also recommends keeping the reply concise, while addressing all points. “Negative comments should be taken with a pinch of salt,” he stresses. “Remember, this isn’t about you; it’s about a holiday home. Give yourself a day before replying to negative reviews, to stop feeling angry or hurt, and use the feedback to your advantage. Amend faults and improve on shortcomings so that future guests benefit, then let them know what you’ve done.” Cornish Traditional Cottages have a deep wealth of knowledge when it comes to making holiday home rentals a success, so if you’re just starting out or are looking for advice to improve, why not give George and the team a call?
