Carpentry

Have you had a house full of visitors this summer? If so, you might be thinking how useful it would be to have a bit more space.

arpenter Oak Cornwall believe in improving rather than moving, by building an extension - trading a breeze block room with uPVC windows, for solid oak and glass to create a bright but cosy living space you actually want to spend time in. “A little oak goes a long way, and can frame a view spectacularly, whether it’s the view of your own garden or a wider landscape”, says Director Stuart Voaden. The company builds timber frames in both oak and Douglas fir. Even the most modest bungalow can be transformed by a glazed gable end, a

6 CornwalL Home Improvement & Self Build Show HSG 2015 - ALL PAGES.indd 6

08/09/2015 18:36

conservatory, timber-framed link buildings that can tie existing buildings together, or a glazed barn room with a vaulted ceiling giving the impression of even more space. Carpenter Oak is well known for working with architects to create stunning bespoke new-build homes, and now you can make use of its in-house frame designer to realise your dream of either a contemporary or traditional timber framed addition to your property that will enhance it and add value. The open roof space, exposed timbers and large windows are eye-catching features

and Carpenter Oak’s more contemporary timber frames paired with stainless steel bracing have a coastal vibe that fits particularly well in Cornwall. These frames are built to last and work around any existing stonework you may have. And if you’re unsure how an extension could work with your home, Carpenter Oak will be presenting ideas during a seminar at the Cornwall Home Improvement and Self Build Show at the Royal Cornwall Showground on the 3rd and 4th of October. Designer Tom Jubb and Manager Tim Simpson from the carpentry team will be on hand to answer your queries and discuss your ideas, so bring photos of your house to see where it could lead. You’ll find them on Stand SR4 at the show. Rosie Morgan commissioned Carpenter Oak last year to build an oak frame extension on her house near Falmouth, and was thrilled with the difference it has made to her living space, giving her a room with a great view of the garden and an area that can be used as an occasional guest bedroom as well. “The day the frame was erected will always stand out in my memory. Every member of the team with whom I have had contact has been positive, helpful and enthusiastic - exactly what a novice like me needs when making such life-changing decisions” says Rosie.

Spa therapy

When it comes to winding down, Elite Spas South West has the perfect solution.

S

ummer is officially over, and braving the fresh temperatures of the Cornish sea may no longer seem like an appealing feat. Why not have the warmth and comfort of a hot tub or swim spa in the leisure of your own home, all year round? Elite Spas and Leisure South West offers a range of American hot tubs, at affordable prices. Gone are the days where hot tubs were considered a luxury item, intangible to many. The Wadebridge based company has seen a surge in purchases from customers for medicinal purposes; the benefits of relaxing in hot water with soothing hydrotherapy massage jets really can make a difference. Since launching in 2012, Elite Spas South West has risen in profile, growing into

Cornwall’s largest provider and displayer of hot tubs, swim spas, saunas and greenhouses. They are so confident in the quality of the hot tubs from cutting-edge American manufacturers Aspen and Alps, they offer five and ten year warranties on all tubs. Company Director Chris Williams explains: “We focus on some very clear core family values with service, aftercare and honesty being at the heart of everything we do. Then we bring a range of top quality products with a pedigree and proven track record in their respective areas of expertise and put a range of products on display at affordable prices.” Darrel and Sue from Newquay were impressed with the service and aftercare after having their tub installed. “We love it so much and it's one of the best things we've ever bought as it plays such a big role in our lives, we wouldn't be without one now.” Coinciding with the Home and Lifestyle show, Elite Spas South West will be selling display models (tubs, buildings and greenhouses) as well as offering a selection of deals on pre-orders for 2016.

Cutting edge design

Home Show Guide

Whether creating a new building or transforming an existing one, a construction project can be daunting. But it should be rewarding too.

T

his is the ethos that drives LOCi:architecture, a bespoke architectural studio based in Penzance, west Cornwall. “Lasting architecture has two essential ingredients at its heart: people and place. The role of the architect is to bring out the best of both, to inform the design and ensure the quality and efficiency of delivery,” says Keith Bell, Principal Architect at the studio. “Teamwork is key, with client, builder, craftsman and architect pulling towards a common goal – quality, beauty and functionality,” expands Keith. “This is the real value of engaging an experienced architect; understanding client need and recognising the skills of the builder and craftsman to deliver to exacting standards.” LOCi:architecture is reinvigorating historic properties with a contemporary twist, as at the recently completed Chapel House PZ. An exquisite boutique hotel has emerged from the Grade II Listed former Penzance Art’s Club on the town’s historic Chapel Street. Painstaking investigation revealed the original details wherever possible, while a 21st century layer has been added to the building’s future history. Proprietor Susan Stuart says: “Keith worked tirelessly with me to identify the design opportunities for the project. He listened to my ideas and concerns and produced a design that has exceeded my expectations.” Susan continues: “Our guests consistently recognise the quality of the finish and the attention to detail across the project; a marriage of old and new that has brought this beautiful building back to life!” With over 20 years’ professional experience in the design and delivery of over £2billion worth of projects across the globe, LOCi:architecture combines international experience with local knowledge. Visit LOCi:architecture at Stand 58 at The Cornwall Home Improvement & Self Build Show on 3rd and 4th October.

Smart Energy Connecting traditional energy sources with the latest renewables technology can be problematic; Mitchell & Webber have a perfect solution.

T

he new system allows a Rayburn Range cooker to be combined with various renewable sources such as Solar and wood burners to give one unified system. This combination tends to lead to one question: how do they all work together? The AGA Rayburn Eco-Connect Panel is the smart link in the system that allows interconnection of different sources to work freely and with ease when needed, cleverly drawing energy from the greenest option at all times. Generally, it is not always convenient to rely entirely on renewable energy, as it can be insufficient when meeting the total heating and hot water demand of the owner's lifestyle. In such cases an oil fired appliance is used to meet the short fall. Mitchell & Webber have opted for the Eco-Connect system from AGA Rayburn a system from a trusted supplier and a system which has been full tested and warrantied by Rayburn. The Eco-Connect system allows interconnection of a renewable product such as a wood burning appliance or solar hot water panels - with an oil fired boiler or a Rayburn central heating range cooker. The new device consists of a wiring centre, pump station and a heat exchanger, with associated motorised valves to which the various flow and return pipe work and electrical connections are made. Thermistors are used in conjunction with an intelligent control panel to sense the water temperature of the flow and return pipes and domestic hot water (DHW) cylinder. It also incorporates a display panel showing the current operating status. In essence, hot water is diverted by the Eco-Connect to where it is needed. And if the renewable appliance (for example, wood burning stove) is not giving sufficient output, then the oil fired boiler or central heating Rayburn will be brought into operation. Priority is always automatically given to the renewable heat source. So, for homeowners looking to incorporate renewables into their properties, but still want the reliability and backup of an oil fired heating system, the Eco-Connect is a great solution!
