otton Mills Interiors Truro is an independent company specialising in fabrics, furnishings and design that’s enjoying a second year of being awarded the prestigious Best of Houzz Award for Customer Service. What’s more, Cotton Mills is expanding with a purpose-built second premises in Truro, hoping to hold its launch party towards the end of the year. So, with the recent downturn, why are so many people turning back to small businesses? We’ve all been guilty of contributing to the growth of multinationals – the convenience and continuity of knowing exactly what you are going to get whether you are walking into a store in Birmingham or Bangkok. But that is exactly what’s starting to turn people off. You know what you are going to get, and it is okay, but it’s nothing special. All of the decisions about what products and services are being provided, and how they are provided, are made and portion controlled at head office.

Home Show Guide

So what is different about an independent business? They are often small companies that have been set up by people with a passion for their area of interest, and these individuals are actively involved in the service you receive. Products offered can be selected for their quality and suitability, and adapted as necessary to the individual needs of the customer. There is a sense of discovering a hidden treasure involved in finding a good independent, and companies like Cotton Mills are certainly benefitting from appreciation for the handmade in Cornwall appeal with less people opting for the factory made option. There’s also the added satisfaction of knowing that 70p of every £1 you spend with a local business goes back into the local economy. It has been a tough decade in retail, and although we have lost some wonderful presences from the high street, we should also remember that businesses that have survived have done so for a reason. We’re blessed in Cornwall with a wide range of independents thriving because they can deliver a level of service and expertise that makes using them a delight that continues to outstrip the ‘computer says no’ corporations. So if you’re looking for some interior design advice for your home, why not stay local and contact the team at Cotton Mills?

ccording to www.holidaycottages. co.uk, one of best ways of improving your property’s potential to attract guests is to install a hot tub. “It’s a luxury which guests may not be able to enjoy at home, adding an element of relaxation to their cottage break. The hot tub will continue to attract guests all year round, with many enjoying a dip right through the winter!” So why choose a wood-fired tub? Well, for a start, they look simply stunning, complementing the natural design of your garden. A tub from Kernow Springs is handcrafted from the finest timbers, while the water is heated by burning wood. No electricity is required at all, which means much lower running costs, no noisy pumps and only minimal water treatment required. 100% natural – 100% sustainable! Kernow Springs’ fabulous tubs caught the eye of popular actress and TV personality Caroline Quentin, who couldn’t resist their charms. “I love my Kernow Springs hot tub!” beams Caroline. “Beautifully constructed from Thermowood, it’s a joy to use and looks wonderful too. I keep chemical use to a minimum and it’s really simple to heat and fill. Sitting under the stars, up to my neck in hot water is a wonderful, eco-friendly way to relax.” As well as gracing many homes and holiday cottages across the south west, these beautiful

tubs have proved popular in hospitality venues too, which share the company’s ethos of great design, bespoke luxury and eco credentials. These include The Green, a wedding venue in Liskeard; Soul Camping, luxury glamping in north Cornwall; and The Old Mill House, a wonderful boutique B&B in Padstow, where their Valentine’s weekend package sold out in record time. “I would highly-recommend Kernow Springs Eco tubs”, says Adam, General Manager. “Not only is it a one of a kind product but Martin’s knowledge and dedication is exceptional. Nothing beats a glass of champagne in the tub on Christmas Day! I hope to work with them again in the future.” So if you’re looking to boost your revenue, all-year-round interest and eco image, get in touch with Martin and the team now.

Roaming eco spa Kernow Springs’ ‘Roaming Eco Spa’ will be on tour at a festival near you this summer, and is available for private hire for weddings, parties and corporate events. Hot tubs, saunas, showers, changing yurts, Bedouin chill-out lounge and more… the complete spa package for your event!

otted across Cornwall you will find beautiful stone fisherman’s cottages, agricultural barns, bridges and churches, from medieval to Methodist. One element that unites many of them is the local granite used to build them – instantly recognisable and intrinsically Cornish. This wonderful local material has been used in Cornwall for over 5,000 years. Only since the 19th century has it been quarried commercially, and used in buildings and monuments throughout Britain and worldwide, including London’s iconic Tower Bridge. We catch up with Edd Duke of Duke Stone of Cornwall, an independent stone masonry company that champions our fine local materials. “The rocks of Cornwall are legendary with the granite backbone of the Duchy being formed at least 100 million years ago!” says Edd, who talks passionately about the stunning materials we are lucky enough to find right on our doorstep. “The Lizard Peninsula, where our workshops are based, is famed for its rare yet beautiful red and green serpentine rocks, which can be seen in the cliffs and rocks at nearby Kynance Cove.” With a team of experienced and professional stonemasons, Duke Stone produces beautiful bespoke items for the home and garden, from

incredible kitchen worktops and vanities for the bathroom, to fireplaces, hearths and wonderful sculptures. Stone has many great benefits, being both hardwearing and heat resistant. But the real beauty is the natural variation, rich with textures, patterns and hues that change in the light. Mixing stone with other natural materials produces fantastic results, with subtle differences in texture and finishes. It’s a versatile material too, equally at home in a 300-year-old character cottage or a highly contemporary apartment, depending the specific finish. Indeed, natural stone is perfect if you’re looking to for a real statement piece to complete a room. Take, for example, the unique, stunning serpentine tiles and sink – contemporary, yet millions of years old, they are guaranteed to be a talking point! The team will be returning to the Cornwall Home & Lifestyle Show again this year. So if you have some ideas for your home that you’d like to discuss, pop over to the stand and have a chat, or call into their office at Cury Cross Lanes, just outside Helston.

uild Byour dream home After a successful couple of years delivering beautiful handcrafted oak timber frames Carpenter Oak Cornwall have something new up their sleeves…

“Using a project manager gives one consistent point of contact throughout the build, bypassing the time and effort spent dealing with multiple contractors.”

S

ince setting up in 2014, the team at Carpenter Oak Cornwall have often been asked if they can provide a complete project management and build service for their timber frame projects. “After two years establishing ourselves and building relationships with local people we are now in a position to do this”, says Project Manager Tim Simpson. Tim talks us through the benefits of using a complete build service for your timber frame project. Organising a build project is a full time job and people often have commitments which makes this difficult. “There are different methods to organise a build but, in our experience, to save time and stress it can really make sense to use a project manager to co-ordinate it”, explains Tim. “Using a

project manager gives one consistent point of contact throughout the build, bypassing the time and effort spent dealing with multiple contractors.” Another benefit in using a project manager or complete build service is that there is one company consistently ensuring the same high standard throughout the entire process. “Here at Carpenter Oak Cornwall, when we are engaged to deliver a complete project we are able to design and construct the building ‘our way’. It means we can use tried and tested details and methods to ensure that the finished oak or timber framed building will meet the highest of expectations.” Stuart Voaden, Director at Carpenter Oak Cornwall, believes that success in a project-managed build comes from the team involved. “For many people, taking on a build, whatever the scale, is a challenging prospect. Peace of mind comes from working with people like Tim and his team who know what they are doing, but more than that they know the importance of clear communication. On top of this they are fun and enjoyable people to work with. All these elements in one package is not as common as it should be.” Tim and the Carpenter Oak Cornwall team will be on hand during the Cornwall Home Show at stand SR5.
