If you’ve got children or grandchildren, then Cornwall really is the place for you. Whatever you love doing as a family, we’ve got it covered! We have more beaches here than anywhere else in country. You could literally choose a different one each day and still not visit them all. So with so much choice, we narrowed it down to five of our favourites (page 25), although we could just as easily have chosen many others. We’ve suggested lots of other ‘top fives’ (in no particular order), so you can plan your adventures at a glance. From boat trips (page 34) to scenic rail journeys (page 10); cycling trails (page 18) to mining heritage trails (page 15), there are many ways to explore and experience Cornwall, each providing something a little bit different. We’ve also put together the ultimate bucket (and spade) list – our selection of must-do activities to tick off (page 6), from horseriding on the beach to scaling St Michael’s Mount. You’ll also find suggestions of places to eat out where families are welcome (page 41) as well as some all-weather activities for those occasional rainy days (page 45), and some essential guides to rockpooling (page 39) and crabbing (page 30). Happy exploring and we look forward to seeing you at the beach!

TOO NICE TO BE
Nauti! We’ve found the perfect combination for a great day out, starting in the heart of Porthleven.
1 Breakfast with a view
What could be better than a stunning circular family walk with that begins in Porthleven, home to Kids Love HQ? One of our favourite ways to spend a day is to stroll down to Nauti But Ice in Porthleven for a hearty breakfast. Ingredients are locally sourced and plates come piled with sumptuous culinary delights that are sure to set you up for the day ahead. It’s hard to choose from the delicious menu but we love the pancakes with yoghurt, berry compote and toasted seeds. With a full tummy it’s time to head out on the cliff road for a brisk walk. Whether sunny or stormy, this is a footpath with views that never fail to impress.
2 coffee on the go
As the cliff path ends so the National Trust owned woodland walk through Penrose Estate begins. A wide track winds its way around the Loe Pool, shaded by trees and teaming with wildlife. Half way through the walk you’ll come across The Stables Café, nestled in a delightful courtyard. There is a chance for further refreshment here if another freshly-brewed barista coffee is the order of the day and an opportunity to pause, rest your legs and take in the view of the lake. Chloe Jones
3 time for tea
Then it’s time to head home, an easy stroll on quiet roads will return you back to the village of Porthleven. A visit to Cornwall isn’t complete without the ubiquitous Cornish Cream Tea – freshly baked scones, smothered in jam first (of course!) and topped with a generous dollop of clotted cream. Nauti serves a delicious one, accompanied by a fresh pot of looseleaf tea.
4 ice cream delight
Nauti also has a well-stocked ice cream parlour, serving the excellent, local Roskilly’s ice cream, a sure way to keep the children happy while you sit back and relax looking out across the harbour.
5 perfect pizza
And finally… you don’t even have to venture out of the village in order to enjoy your evening meal. Nauti’s sister restaurant Go, serves freshly-baked pizzas with a range of delicious toppings. There’s nothing nicer than grabbing a seat overlooking the water after a day making memories with the family. WAYS
to discover
Cornwall’s Cornwall
mining heritage
In the 19th century, Cornwall became home to the global industry of mining for minerals such as tin, copper and coal, with its rich stretches of coastline and pockets of ore lying beneath seabed. It’s fascinating to learn that some mines, such as those on the ‘Tin Coast’, stretched almost a mile out to sea, beneath the very bedrock of the Atlantic!
Tim Green
Nilfainion
And, by exploring the various visitor centres and abandoned engine house ruins, dotted all around the Cornish landscape, there’s plenty to be discovered.
1 engine house trail
If your kids love nothing more than mounting up on two wheels, then taking on a stretch of the Engine House Trail is the perfect way to spend a day. Winding its way through 13 Cornish towns, from Hayle to Bissoe, there are hundreds of historic landmarks to see, from Gwennap Pit – a Cornish amphitheatre made famous by the founder of Methodism, John Wesley, to the Carn Brea Monument – built to commemorate local baron, Francis Basset, a member of one of the region’s most important mining families, famous for his good working conditions as well as for marching his mining workforce all the way to Plymouth, to bolster the defences against the French and Spanish invasion.
mine and 2 levant beam engine
This National Trust site offers visitors the chance to explore the various ruins of Levant mine. Follow in the footsteps of the miners who once worked there, hear the tales of the Edwardian miners and discover the site’s secrets. Learn how the history of this mining site took a tragic turn in 1919, as the man-engine failed after a link snapped, killing 31 men and heralding an end to the mining of the mine’s deepest levels.

Despite the name, Wheal Prosper was anything but prosperous. It is, however, a stunning place to visit. The iconic engine house on Rinsey head – with uninterrupted, panoramic views over the Atlantic – is a fantastic spot for a picnic, and the adventurous types can even climb inside the ruin. Further along the coast path you’ll find more dilapidated ruins, but be sure to stay safe and look at these from a short distance.

Geevor Tin Mine is the country’s largest preserved mining site, where visitors can go underground and experience a real, 18th century tin mine. The Hard Rock Museum tells the story of Cornish mining, while the many other buildings, with their magnificent mining machinery, provide a fascinating insight into the industry. The world, during the 19th century, relied on Cornwall for its mining technology exports and at Geevor, you’ll begin to understand why!
Dennis White
3 Geevor tin mine
If you’re near Helston or the Lizard, be sure to visit Poldark Mine – the only complete tin mine in Cornwall that’s open for underground guided tours. Mining here dates back to Bronze Age, so it’s definitely one for those budding ancient-history buffs!
It’s likely that your kids will want to give surfing a go, particularly when the sun’s out, so why not head down to St Agnes, one of the north coast’s most popular surf spots, before exploring the local coast path and seeing what heritage it has to offer? Wheal Coates is arguably one of the most iconic engine houses in Cornwall and, upon visiting the spot and seeing it for yourselves, it’s easy to see why. Get there just before the sun goes down and experience one of the finest sunsets you’re ever likely to see! KIDS LOVE 2017/18 | 17

1 Sandcastle building
PRAA SANDS Ideally situated between Helston and Penzance, Praa Sands is a superb spot to perfect your sandcastle skills. With the beach stretching out to nearly a mile in length, there is enough sand for even the most ambitious children. Flat seas during the summer months also make Praa Sands optimal for paddlers or burgeoning surfers, and with a restaurant, shop and café all located beach side, all you need to do is turn up, lie down and relax.
2 South Coast Sun
PORTHCURNO For those families who fancy a picturesque beach, emerald green seas and nearby entertainment, Porthcurno is surely the number one choice. Located three miles from Land’s End, Porthcurno is fantastic for families as its narrow beach head ensures you can always keep an eye on the kids whilst enjoying the sun yourself. The Minack Theatre is also carved into the nearby cliffs – so why not make a day of it?
3 Rockpooling
MAWGAN PORTH Moving north, four miles outside of Newquay you will find Mawgan Porth beach. If your family wants to escape
inevitable summer crowds, then Mawgan Porth may be the beach for you. An abundance of rockpools and even a large stream running down the south side of the beach provide hours of entertainment for the little ones and if you think your dog would like the sound of this, as an added bonus Mawgan Porth is dog friendly all year round! For more rockpooling ideas, turn to page 39.
4 Easy Access
PORTHMINSTER If a scenic coastal train ride which stops just outside a beach sounds right up your street, Porthminster is perfect for your family. Hop off the train at St Ives and enjoy a short stroll to this family favourite. Porthminster truly has something for everyone; whether you’re a swimmer or a shopper, this Blue Flag beach has all the ingredients for a great family day out!

Cornwall’s unique location and mild climate have given rise to some of the country’s most stunning gardens. We visit a few favourites to find them in full bloom.
Gardens 1 Lost of Heligan
Julian Stephens, Heligan Gardens Ltd
Both big and little kids will get swept away on an adventure through the Lost Gardens of Heligan, following bamboo tunnels and palm-lined avenues down a steep-sided valley to a world of tree ferns, banana palms and gigantic rhubarb. Explore the ancient woodlands and water meadows of The Lost Valley, spy on wildlife from the secret hides and spot farm animals from the poultry orchard. There are over 200 acres of grounds just waiting to be explored here, from a Victorian Productive Garden to a lush subtropical jungle. www.heligan.com
2 TREBAH
With buggy-friendly paths, child heaven play areas and special events all year round, this list wouldn’t be complete without Trebah Garden. When you’ve prised little adventurers from the adrenaline-filled adventure area, explore under canopies bursting with exotic blooms, follow vibrant tunnels of colour that cascade down to the private secluded beach on the Helford. Trebah is also famous for its magnolia campbellii or the giant Himalayan ‘pink tulip tree’. At 81ft, this is a UK Champion Tree and its stunning flowers look for all the world like giant china tea cups! Another fantastic feature of Trebah is the amphitheatre which holds fabulous open-air performances throughout the summer.

Isles of Scilly
3 ABBEY GARDEN
The subtropical Abbey Garden on the island of Tresco on the Isles of Scilly is a glorious exception – a perennial Kew without the glass – shrugging off salt spray and Atlantic gales to host thousands of exotic plants. Many of these tender floral gems would stand no chance on the Cornish mainland, less than 30 miles away. Yet even at the winter equinox more than 300 plants will be in flower. Visit the Kids’ Trail around the gardens which take in the maritime history of the Valhalla Figurehead collection and some of the the more unusual plant life.

4 Trengwainton
With many rare plants from around the world, Trengwainton is great for gardening enthusiasts to explore. When you consider the Tiddlers Trails and Seasonal Spotter sheets designed to keep your little ones happy, it becomes a day out for the whole family! For those who find walking difficult, there’s an all-terrain mobility scooter available to hire and, what’s more, the garden is dog friendly, so you can keep tails wagging too. There’s a tearoom that serves lunch between 12 and 3pm, as well as homemade cakes and cream teas throughout the day – what more could you need?

5 Glendurgan
Let the children loose in the magical web of the cherry laurel maze at Glendurgan, then hear them squeal with joy as they get airborne on the ropes of the Giant’s Stride. Stroll hand-in-hand through tunnels of colour to get to the beach, where you can relax whilst keeping a watchful eye on the children as they play, paddle and throw pebbles into the glassy waters of the Helford. Tucked away at the bottom of the valley is the beautiful and peaceful riverside village of Durgan, a visit to which in itself is like a step back in time. Today much of the wider landscape can be explored via a variety of delightful walks, looking out to open waters through woodlands and wildflowers. A truly idyllic sanctuary!

Guide to
G N I B B A R C Who can catch the biggest crab? There’s only one way to find out! So, why not give it a go by following our essential tips...
NORTH COAST Try Port Isaac and Padstow. The harbours here provide plenty of crabbing opportunities. SOUTH COAST Fowey is the perfect place to spend an hour or two catching crabs on the riverside, as the boats come and go up the river.
Visit Cornwall Matt Jessop
WEST COAST Cadgwith, on The Lizard, is a traditional fishing village, where edible crab, lobster and monkfish are still landed. Porthleven is a great spot too – the extensive harbour walls are usually home to legions of eager crabbers.
Visit Cornwall Matt Jesso p
How to do it •
Find a suitable spot on the harbour wall (be careful now, harbour walls can be dangerous, so take care).
•
Tie your bacon onto your line (crabs love the rind best), tinned sardines or any old fish head you happen to have lying about.
•
Drop your line in the water and wait. The shore crab, the most common in Cornwall, needs a little coaxing – about five minutes should do it.
•
Raise your line, it should feel a little heavier, and observe. Clustered to your now half eaten bait should be a few happy crabs munching away, or you might need to wait a little longer.
•
If you want to keep your crabs in a bucket for a while to look at, only put a few in at a time. They don’t like crowds, and make sure you place your bucket in the shade – crabs are not used to the sun.
•
After you’ve observed their quirky antics, carefully place them back into the water. They are not edible so please don’t try them on the barbeque, simply let them go back home!
Did yo u know? The shore crab, which loves bacon, is an opportunistic scavenger that can grow up to:

ou see so much more when travelling under your own steam on two wheels, rather than four. Riding on a bike through the great Cornish countryside gives you the opportunity to soak up the scenery around you, rather than it rushing past in a blur. You can see the sights, take in the fresh coastal air, and hear the sounds of birdsong and perhaps lapping water.
Go ByCycle If you are staying in Cornwall but didn’t bring the bikes, fear not! The team at Go ByCycle can deliver bikes straight to your door, all across Cornwall. So wherever you might be, there’s no excuse not to get out and explore!

Nowhere is this more so than the Camel Trail, which stretches across 18 miles of gorgeous Cornish countryside, from Padstow all the way to Wenfordbridge. Following along a disused railway line, the path is flat and mostly level throughout, and (more importantly) away from traffic – perfect for family bike rides, particularly for early riders to get some practise in, away from the busy roads. The trail is divided in three legs. The first and most popular is from Wadebridge to Padstow, offering five miles of stunning estuary views along the flat trail. Then there’s Wadebridge to Bodmin (six miles long) and Bodmin to Wenfordbridge (12.2 miles), both of which take in the north Cornish countryside on mostly flat terrain, with slight, occasional inclines. For the keen cyclists, these can be done in a single day, though if you just fancy a leisurely ride at a simple pace, then simply doing a section at a time is the way to go. There are many beautiful picnic spots en route, so you can refuel and reserve some energy, set to the backdrop of the Camel estuary as it snakes its way through the countryside.
With over 400 bikes in all shapes and sizes, and lots of accessories, Bridge Bike Hire really does have something for everyo ne. The team are on hand to help find the right bike for you. If you’d like to give it a go, we recommend speaking to the team at Bridge Bike Hire in Wadebridge, a wonderful family-run company with over 30 years’ experience. Established by Nigel Wiggett back in 1983, Bridge Bike Hire holds the honour of being the very first cycle hire company not only on the Camel Trail, but in Cornwall itself, so it’s safe to say the team really know their stuff! From tandems to bike trailers (for dogs or younger children) and disability options, the team really do have it covered for everyone. To avoid disappointment in busy periods such as school holidays, it’s worth booking your bikes in advance, which you can do at no extra cost just by giving the team a quick call. So why not give it a go – it’s time for some serious pedal power! Bridge Bike Hire 01208 813050 www.bridgebikehire.co.uk KIDS LOVE 2017/18 | 33

They capture the imagination and tug at the heartstrings – but perhaps mostly excitingly, Cornwall’s many and varied legends cast a whole new light on well-loved locations. King Arthur
NORTH CORNWALL As the legendary birthplace of King Arthur, Tintagel Castle is the first port of call on the Arthurian trail, but the trail has many twists and turns, and takes followers on a journey through St Nectan’s Glen, Slaughterbridge and onwards to Bodmin Moor. Here the wild and rugged landscape is strewn with tales of Arthur’s adventures and at the mythical Dozmary Pool and the Lady of the Lake.
Giant Wrath
Giant Cormoran
Giant Bolster ST AGNES
ST MICHAEL’S MOUNT Whether by boat or by foot, the journey in itself to St Michael’s Mount is a mini adventure and waiting for you is a world of fanciful tales bursting with courage and heroics. Upon reaching the Mount you will discover an incredible land once trodden by giants, and one giant in particular named Cormoran. With a growling stomach he would wade ashore and feast upon cows and sheep that he stole from the villagers.
The Mermaid of Zennor
ZENNOR The most romantic of Cornish legends. The beautiful mermaid captures the heart of a local chorister. With love as his guide he turns to a life beneath the shore and leaving Zennor. As a lasting memento they carve a Mermaid Chair from wood which can still be seen in St Senara’s Church today. Listen carefully when you next visit Zennor – it is said that you hear the sound of the lovers singing together.
PORTREATH In Portreath you can see the remains of boulders. These are said to have been the weapon of choice for a fearsome giant named ‘Ralph the Wrath’. Ralph the Wrath lived in a collapsed sea cave and had an appetite for sailors. He longed for their treasure and would attack passing ships and fill his cave with the loot. You can visit this cave, which is known locally as Ralph’s Cupboard.
The giant, Bolster, lorded over St Agnes, but love was eventually his downfall. In a bid to win over St Agnes, a beautiful local girl, he fell prey to her cunning when he tried to prove his love for her by filling a hole at Chapel Porth with his blood. Unbeknown to Bolster, the hole was bottomless and he bled to death. As a sign of this lovelorn tale, a hint of red still lingers on the cliff there.

Guide to
Rockpooling Cover your feet, grab a net, and venture into the shallows when the tide has retreated. At first the pools might look empty, but keep still and beneath the water the marine life will soon spring into action. Here are a few watery stars to look out for...
TOMPOT BLENNY – Distinctive red eyes and red tentacles protrude from its head like a stylish hat. VELVET SWIMMING CRAB – Bright red eyes, bright blue banding on its legs and covered in dark hairs, this aggressive little creature packs a mean punch with its strong pincers. PIPEFISH – As its name suggests, this fish is long and thin and, like seahorses, the male pipefish carries the young in his brooding pouch. COMMON PRAWN – These are transparent so you can see all their internal organs as they dart around the water in frantic, jerky spasms. SNAKE-LOCKS ANEMONE – Bright green with purple tips, this elegant creature has a sting in its tail; its tentacles are used to stun passing fish.
A few favourites castle beach, falmouth
Less well-known than its popular neighbouring beach, Gyllyngvase, Castle beach just along the coast towards Pendennis Castle is the ideal spot for rockpooling, with lots of pools for discovering critters. Treyarnon Bay
Recommended by almost everyone with a passion for peering at sea creatures. A wide open bay where at low tide huge rock pools are revealed and the watery shallows are uncovered. Kennack Sands
Right down on The Lizard, Kennack Sands is a perfect family beach where you’ll find lots of sand, and rockpools aplenty as the tide recedes. Dramatically located on the northwest coast, where high cliffs tower over the pebbles; venture to the far end of the beach, where large crabs lie in wait to be discovered in the numerous pools. ST Mawes
St Mawes on the Roseland peninsula is scattered with tiny rockpools, home to an amazing array of fish, anemones and seaweed.

Ok, we admit it. It does (occasionally) rain here in Cornwall! So, when it does, be prepared with our list of top attractions of the great indoors.
Eden Project NEAR ST AUSTELL Don’t miss Cornwall’s world-famous attraction, where the tropical, subtropical and temperate worlds meet. Most people make straight for the Rainforest and Mediterranean Biomes, but don’t overlook the outdoor space, riddled with shortcuts, hideaways, stepping stones, spy-holes and sandpits.
camel creek adventure park WADEBRIDGE Formerly known as Crealy, this thrilling adventure park has something for everyone. Meet the emus, llamas, and Kunekune pigs; ride the ‘Morgawr’ rollercoaster; try out the ‘Demon Drop Slide’; plus there’s a large indoor playzone for those occasional showers.
INDOOR ACTIVE ROCHE Easily accessed on the A30 at Cornwall Services, Roche, Indoor Active is the ideal destination for a rainy day, wherever you might be in Cornwall. Both kids and grown-ups will love ‘Clip ‘n’ Climb’, a fun and safe climbing experience, while the young ones can let off steam at the Soft Play centre.
Rollers Roller Disco POOL Struggling to find fun new things to do with the children is over. At Rollers Roller Disco your little ones can zoom around, have a blast and wear off some energy to boot! Family discounts are available, and with no need to book, just turn up, skate up and go!
National Maritime Museum Cornwall FALMOUTH Check out the enthralling National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth, offering stunning galleries and fascinating exhibitions all year round, with hands-on activities and workshops for the children and lectures for grown-ups too.
Telegraph museum PORTHCURNO Some might be surprised to hear that Cornwall is the home of modern global communications and Porthcurno is where it all started. Visit the Telegraph Museum to enjoy a range of fun activities. Your little monsters will have hours upon hours of fun, and while you’re there, admire the breath-taking scenery. If the sun does come out, stop by the Minack Theatre.

Cornwall Hospice FUN WAYS Care TO HELP
There are many ways you can help make a real difference to people’s lives here in Cornwall... we suggest just a few. Cornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care holds a number of family events throughout the year aimed at having fun while raising funds for a good cause. “We are very much about family,” explains Tamsin from the charity. “The care we provide in Cornwall is to wider families and we appreciate the importance of making memories together.” There are many ways you can help, too, all while enjoying yourself at the same time! Perhaps you love dressing up… or running? Are you a budding baker? Whatever your preference, here are our top five ways to help make a difference!
1
Get baking
Everyone loves cakes – and baking can help raise money at the same time. Why not organise a cake stall at your school or local fête?
2 Get active
Work off all that cake in the great Cornish countryside and get your friends and family to sponsor you while you do it. Sign up for walks, cycles, treks and – for the real thrill seekers (not for the youngsters) – parachute jumps!
3 Dress up
Why not organise a non-uniform day at your school? You could even give it a fun fancy dress theme. Little steps like this really can make a such big difference.
4 Go Neon
Join the neon colour run, ‘Night of Neon’, held at Flambards, Helston, in October. It’s an evening event, aimed at older teenagers and their family and friends, with music, madness and clouds of neon paint to run through. What’s not to like?
5 Run with Santa
Then there’s the ever-popular Santa Series, with family runs in Truro, Padstow, Falmouth, Helston and Newquay (featuring surfing Santas!). Your registration fee ensures you a suitable costume and a medal when you cross the festive finish line.
