Outdoor adventures
OF THE BEST
Whether you want to hit Cornwall’s famed surf breaks, or stick to dry land and explore the county on two wheels, here are just a few ideas for adventurous families looking to make the most of Cornwall outdoors! n Camel Ski School
1Camel Ski School
Taking shelter from the breakers of the coast, Camel Ski School operates on the beautiful Camel Estuary and, as the name suggests, it gives kids and adults alike the chance to try their hands (or feet!) at water skiing. But that’s certainly not all! Headed up by Charlie Toogood, the school also offers wakeboarding and even wakesurfing. Charlie tells us: “Wakesurfing is an addictive and exhilarating combination of surfing and wakeboarding. Basically, it’s like surfing an endless wave, and it’s a huge amount of fun!” www.camelskischool.com
DISCOVER MORE Looking to venture out on two wheels but not sure where to hire your bikes from? Cornwall Bike Hire can deliver bikes to you, wherever you are. They can even deliver to you directly on arrival, so you can be mounted and away as soon as you’re off the train! www.cornwallbikehire.co.uk

2The Camel Trail
Cornwall is a cyclist’s paradise, with countless coastal routes, winding country roads and off-road trails catering to cyclists of all abilities. If you’re staying in north Cornwall, where better to take a tour on two wheels than along the Camel Trail? Worry not, you needn’t load up the bike racks if you’re travelling from afar – you can simply hire everything you need from Bridge Bike Hire (bridgebikehire.co.uk). The team also run evening rides along the trail – a good chance to gain a different perspective of this beautiful hotspot of nature, with dramatic sunsets serving as a backdrop.

3Surfing
When thinking of outdoor adventure in Cornwall, surfing is surely near, if not at, the top of the list of must-try activities. Enlist with St Ives Surf School (stivessurfschool.co.uk) and you’ll quickly catch the bug, learning from some of the country’s best, most innovative and progressive surfers. Alternatively, if you’re hoping to blend your seaside stay with some surfing lessons, why not enjoy a luxurious break at the Headland Hotel? Located above the famed waves at Fistral beach, with its own Surf Sanctuary offering surf coaching and hire, the Headland Hotel is a budding surfer’s paradise. www.headlandhotel.co.uk

4Kernow Adventure Park
On choppier days, when the ocean doesn’t quite have the same appeal, you and the little ones will be pleased to know that you can still make a splash. There are a number of freshwater venues around Cornwall, with an array of activities to help you and yours make memories to last a lifetime. Kernow Adventure Park, for instance, is a reclaimed flooded quarry offering activities that include assault courses, open-water swimming, even wakeboarding. The team has been hand-selected for their positivity and all instructors are trained lifeguards, promoting a friendly and fun environment. As owner, Alex Sly tells us: “When people visit the park, we want them to escape from day-to-day stresses and walk away having had the time of their lives.”
5Lizard Adventure
Finally, if you’re staying on the south coast and are thinking of exploring the UK’s most southerly peninsula when the sun’s out, you may well be in need of a cool-off! How better to do so than a day spent on (or in) the water? The team at Lizard Adventure allow you to try stand up paddle boarding, coasteering, kayaking and climbing, also running survival skill sessions and offering equipment hire. They recently opened a new site in Hayle too, where you can take a guided trip or lesson on kayaks and SUP boards, or hire one and head out on your own path. These include the ‘Mega-Sup’, which fits eight and is great for parties!

In WWII it was a training camp for American GIs preparing for the Normandy Landings and in the 1950s, during the Cold War, the site became home to the Joint Services School for Linguistics (JSSL), also known as ‘the school for spies!’ Bodmin Keep now houses Cornwall’s Regimental Museum, which holds a treasure trove of war history. Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust (HRCST) has exciting plans to build an inclusive water sports centre on the 26-acre site at Trevassack Lake, on the Lizard peninsula. The development will include a Learning Centre with double-height classrooms for rigging lessons, a sensory room and disabled facilities (including a high dependency changing unit), plus seven adapted holiday lodges for families with disabled children. The site will allow HRCST to give those who, for practical reasons, can’t access open water, the opportunity to learn in a safe environment. £2.5M has been raised so far, paying for the lake, the accessible Learning Centre and two of the seven lodges. To realise the final five lodges, the trust needs to raise a further £1.5M, so to make a donation – regular or one-off – and to find out more about the project, be sure to head to the website. Shows by the sea! n Don’t miss The Dan

Join Kneehigh this summer for the puppet show Kate Winslet called “as magical as it is powerful”.
K
neehigh Theatre has been performing in Cornwall for almost 40 years. These days, you’re as likely to see their unique blend of theatre, live music, puppetry and irreverence in New York as you are Newquay! But, every summer, they return to present shows in Cornwall in the Asylum: their beautiful nomadic venue. This year, the Asylum will be on Carlyon beach, in the middle of St Austell bay. From 2nd August until 1st September you can catch The Dancing Frog – a delightful tale of hope, heart and hip-hoppity adventure based on Quentin Blake’s classic children’s book. Alternatively, if you have older children (or a babysitter!) you can catch Kneehigh’s UBU! A Sing along Satire, from 15th August. This raucous, riotous and ridiculous promenade musical, which is surely the first of its kind, is back by popular demand after selling out at the Lost Gardens of Heligan. But it’s not just superb seaside entertainment on offer at the Asylum; Kneehigh has made sure that there’s a delicious offering of food and drink available too, with everything on the menu from seafood to snow cones, pizzas to pasties. The best part is that, thanks to the shelter of the Asylum tent, come rain or shine, your spirits needn’t be dampened!

With parking on site and tickets from just £7, Kneehigh’s Asylum on Carlyon beach is the perfect way to soak up some culture whilst making the most of a day by the sea, so be sure to add it to your summer diary! Unplug and reconnect Get back to nature with a family holiday in the great outdoors, at Cornish Tipi Holidays.
I
n an age dominated by screens – from touch to television – getting back to nature is at the top of many holidaymakers’ lists. Known as a ‘digital detox’, a holiday away from the absorbent screens of our favourite devices can be a really healthy way for a family to reconnect with the world around them. The team at Cornish Tipi Holidays know this, which is why they offer kids and adults alike the opportunity to explore, eat and camp in the great outdoors. Think campfires, swimming in the lake, canoeing, fishing, and nothing between you and the stars except canvas! During the day, you and yours can spend your time making memories with real, tangible experiences. Local adventure company, Cornish Rock Tors, offers guided adventure tours along the rugged north Cornish coastline, including kayaking, paddle boarding and coasteering. Fancy swapping the ocean for freshwater? No problem! On days when the weather’s not so fair, Cornish Rock Tors can lead your adventures inland, having exclusive access to Cornish Tipi Holidays’ reclaimed flooded quarry, and nothing beats making a splash in the calm, gin-clear water. In the evening, however you choose to stay, Cornish Tipi Holidays allow you to pick and choose to suit your budget, whether you favour camping, glamping or sleeping under the stars. The site’s fully equipped tipis and tents can be found dotted around a wooded valley, with meadows, streams and the
glorious pasture lake. Alternatively, if you’re bringing your own gear and are seeking a little privacy, you can choose from large, family-friendly pitches complete with picnic tables, smaller spaces surrounded by woodland, or pitches high above the lake, which are just perfect for a couple’s retreat! There are also spaces for those holidaying in their campervan. Located so close to everything that the north coast has to offer, from celebrity-owned restaurants, to galleries, to independent boutiques, if you’re planning a digital detox with your family, where better to do so than Cornish Tipi Holidays? Days out by train in Cornwall
1St Ives
There couldn’t be a better way to arrive in St Ives than by train. You get to take in the incredible scenery on the journey for one, and you don’t have to worry about parking when you arrive. Because trust us, the narrow streets may be incredibly picturesque but they’re certainly not fun to manoeuvre in the height of the summer season.
2
LOOE
It’s a beautiful journey into Looe, a traditional bucket and spade destination with its safe, family-friendly beach and rockpools – perfect for crabbing and discovering the rich ecosystems that reside beneath the water’s surface. There are also plenty of independent shops, cafés and restaurants.
4FALMOUTH
There’s so much to do in this seaside town, all year round and whatever the weather. Pendennis Castle is just a short walk from Falmouth Docks station with lots of events throughout the year. And there are a plethora of restaurants and bars as well as boat trips, sea safaris and ferry crossings to St Mawes.
5NEWQUAY
This peaceful riverside village is the perfect spot to while away an afternoon. Take a stroll to National Trust Cotehele estate along the river, where events run throughout the year and then head to the idyllic local pub; featuring an outdoor eating area overlooking the river, and a picnic area with a wooden boat replica for the kids to capture their inner pirate.

If you’re looking for a day out for the whole family, where you can include the grandparents, bring the dog and have fun whatever the weather, pop along to Bodmin & Wenford Railway where you’ll journey back in time. Here are just a few ways to make the most of your visit. Go and see the engine up close when you pull into each station and ask the crew to have a look up on the footplate.
Crayons and creativity Pick up your free activity colouring sheet and pencils from the shop before embarking on your journey. It’ll keep the little ones entertained as you follow the route and complete the puzzles, ticking off the ‘Eye Spy’ checklist.

Not only is Cornwall home to a wealth of family-friendly attractions, days out and beaches, it boasts a plethora of restaurants that are just waiting to welcome you and your clan, each with something on the menu to satisfy that sharp, sea-air appetite. n The Boatyard Café, Gweek
Cornish Pizza 1The Company
Based in the village of St Agnes on the rugged north coast, The Cornish Pizza Company places a keen focus on quality ingredients and, most importantly, freshness. Made from scratch, Tim and the team’s thin-crust pizzas utilise deliciously fresh and local ingredients. Pizza names are dedicated to the area’s rich mining history – for instance Wheal Music, which combines mozzarella, homemade barbeque sauce, Cajun spiced pulled pork, onion marmalade and Tintagel smoked cheese. Primarily a takeaway, The Cornish Pizza Company also offers smallersize ‘Baby’ pizzas, making it the perfect option for picking up something on your way home after a day spent exploring with the clan. 01872 553092 www.thecornishpizzacompany.co.uk

Porthleven is arguably up there with Padstow as one of the foodie capitals of Cornwall. One restaurant that’s helped contribute to this level of prestige is Rick Stein, Porthleven. With fantastic harbour views, the restaurant team utilises local and seasonal produce to create dishes inspired by Rick’s travels around the world, but don’t be tricked into thinking it’s an ‘adults only’ establishment! The Rick Stein children’s menu is bound to have something to suit even the fussiest of appetites, and being located in the home village of Cornwall Living, it’s one of our regular haunts! 01326 565656 www.rickstein.com
Immediately warm and welcoming with a big log burner providing warmth in the winter, with double doors leading out to an inviting garden in the summer, Gweek’s Boatyard Café has become a big part of the local community. The offering here is delicious to the last touch, with excellent coffee and menus built from good quality, locally sourced ingredients. From pasties and toasties, to falafel, jacket potatoes and wraps, there’s really something for everyone here, with half-portions available for the little ones. The café is also very child friendly, with high chairs and a selection of toys to keep them entertained. If you’re out and about exploring the beautiful Helford river, whether on land or by boat, a pit stop at The Boatyard comes highly recommended.

Out & About Top tips to maximise your stay at North Coast Holiday Cottages. For many, an escape to Cornwall is more than just a holiday. It’s a chance to retreat from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life, and to peel kids away from the screens of their TVs and tablets. For this, North Coast Holiday Cottages is just the ticket, with 14 self-catering cottages that are designed with the perfect ‘away from it all’ experience in mind. If you’re yet to shore up your family holiday plans, resort owner, Natalie, offers her top three tips to make the most of your stay by the rugged north coast.
1 Pop to the local
If you want to take the family for lunch or dinner, the nearby Portreath Arms is perfect. “Thanks to its location,” Natalie explains, “it’s within easy distance. We love the Portreath Arms – it’s changed a great deal in recent years and it’s still transforming now!”
n Dogs are welcome
too!
n Planning your next
family break?
2 Head to the beach
Natalie also explains that the beach at Portreath is, quite simply, a ‘must visit’ for everyone, whether you’re swimming or building sandcastles. “The view from the top of Tregay Hill is breathtaking,” she explains, “especially on a clear day, and you’ll find a shop here with everything you need for your day’s supplies, plus several good pubs and two restaurants by the beach, all offering great food at reasonable prices.”
3 Stretch your legs
If your little ones love exploring, then why not stretch your legs? Natalie and her family love the walk from Tehidy Woods to Deadman’s Cove. “Begin through the Tehidy Country Park wildlife area – home to famously friendly squirrels – before crossing the Reskajeage Downs to reach the north cliffs near Deadman’s Cove. From here, follow the coast path along the top of the steep cliffs to Basset’s Cove, before re-entering Tehidy Country Park, passing through the bluebell woods on the North Cliffs Plantation and completing the route.” FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL 07456 865856 OR VISIT WWW.NORTHCOASTHOLIDAYCOTTAGES. 5Trebah Garden
One of the Great Gardens of Cornwall and rated among the world’s 80 finest gardens, Trebah offers visitors a year-round experience. As well as boasting its own private beach, which fronts onto the Helford river, Trebah runs Children’s Trails throughout the year, which have been devised to be both educational and fun, appealing to kids of all ages. This is a great way to make the most of your family’s adventure, offering the chance to see different parts of the garden. There are three different play areas as well, designed respectively for under 5s and over 5s. These include The Paraglide – one of the garden’s most memorable experiences – and Tarzan’s Camp, a fantastic wooden play area enclosed within a canopy of trees.
Cornwall is steeped in mining history and nowhere is this more evident than along Penwith’s Tin Coast. One of our favourite spots along this seven-mile stretch is Botallack, a site that would have once been alive with the buzz of industry. Botallack was a sub-marine mine, working half a mile out to sea beneath the sea bed, and there’s evidence to suggest that mining took place on the site as far back as 200AD, perhaps even as far as the Bronze Age! When you’re done exploring, why not refresh yourselves at Botallack Count House Workshop? Originally a stables for the mine horses, a workshop for the mine’s carpenter and then a classroom for Penzance School of Mines, the Count House is now the perfect pit stop, combining refreshments with a fascinating insight into how Cornish mining changed the world. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/days-out/tin-coast

ShelterBox Visitor Centre is a ground breaking, family-friendly attraction in the heart of Truro.

he Shelterbox Visitor Centre tells the story of disaster relief charity, ShelterBox, which started life in rugged west Cornwall and has since grown to make a big impact around the world. With interactive displays, family challenges and the new Weather Lab events, the visitor centre is a day out with a difference that supports ShelterBox’s vital aid work. Discover the world’s most powerful storms this year at ShelterBox Visitor Centre. Cornwall has some wild winter storms, but they’re just a breeze compared to a Category 5 hurricane. If you want to find out what it’s like to experience one of these huge storms then head to the ShelterBox Visitor Centre’s new exhibition; Hurricanes, Cyclones and Typhoons. Here you can also find out how the Cornish charity prepares for hurricane season, how they track typhoons around the world, and what it takes to get emergency shelter to people in remote communities that have been devastated by cyclones. You can even have a go at packing a ShelterBox with the items people might need if their home has been hit by a hurricane, and tackle the Hurricane Challenge with your family. Make sure not to miss the Weather Lab, which explains the science behind

Have some fun and fundraise Get stuck into a good cause this summer and help fundraise for a Cornish charity.
O
li Hoare, Cornwall Hospice Care’s Head of Fundraising, tells us: “We’re looking for students to follow in the footsteps of the pupils and staff at Penrice Academy who chose us as their charity of the year last October. Their amazing #BringItHome campaign raised a staggering £9,271.81, which will pay for 497 hours of nursing care!” The Student Academy Council crammed their year with weekly cake sales, a Christmas Fair and a Christmas Jumper Day, plus quizzes, a ‘Tenner Challenge,’ a Firewalk event and a 24-hour sport activity day that involved kayaking, rowing and dancing. “It was amazing and we hope other schools will take up the challenge,” says Oli. Of course, you don’t have to spend a year fundraising – you could follow the lead of other schools in Cornwall that have hosted events like the charity’s Santa Fun Runs. Cornwall Hospice Care provides the Santa suits and medals, you simply choose the route at your school and collect the entry fees. Whatever you choose to do, the fundraising team will support you all the way and provide useful materials like banners, bunting and balloons. They’ll also tell you
about the charity and share stories and films of the families whose lives have been touched. You may have an idea of your own and that’s great too, just let Oli and the fundraising team know and they’ll do all they can to support you. You and your family could even enter the planned Santa Fun Runs and Cycle in December. There are events happening all over Cornwall, so make sure to watch the website for more details. Cornwall Hospice Care is a 24/7 Cornish healthcare charity that provides specialist support to individuals facing terminal illnesses, as well as their families and carers.
