Cookery schools in Cornwall keep good company, from Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall at Watergate Bay, recently renamed Cornwall Food Foundation, which has enrolled over 120 young apprentices and is fighting the good fight for food education regionally and nationally. Add to this the fish and seafood master classes of celebrity chefs such as Rick Stein and Nathan Outlaw, and it has never been easier to teach your children the importance of cooking healthy good food from scratch. If you prefer to leave it to the experts, read on for some fantastic courses for young culinary explorers. Brush up on pro skills at Rick Stein’s Cookery School The children’s cookery courses at Stein’s are specifically designed to inspire and engage the young chefs into the world of cookery. After watching an expert demo three dishes, you will then recreate each dish in pairs at your workstation enjoying each dish as you complete it. This is a real hands-on class with techniques such as de-scaling, trimming, filleting, slicing and deep-frying fish, making batter and preparing and cooking a compote included. Courses offered from 8-11yrs 9:45 to 1pm; 12-16yrs 2 to 5pm. A half day costs from £72. www.rickstein.com

DIY food Be a wild foodie with The Family Foraging Kitchen Vix believes foraging is about more than just food and nourishment. It gets us out into the countryside, helps to cultivate an intimate appreciation of nature, lets us explore history, science and folklore and it can bond families, reestablishing connections severed by modern life. Look out for their wild walks and bee keeping sessions too. Six sessions starting from 9th April, 5th May, 2nd June, 7th July, 4th Aug and 8th Sept, £5 per child and accompanying adults go free. www.familyforagingandwil.wix.com Forage with The Fat Hen Find delicious treats to cook and eat with Caroline. The group goes on a gentle walk to find a few key and easily identifiable wild foods and garden herbs and flowers such as nettles, blackberries, wild garlic, and elderflowers, followed by a one-anda-half hour cooking session where the class will prepare lunch together and eat together. Fridays 10am to 2pm for children 5-12yrs (children under 7 need to be accompanied by an adult), £35. www.fathen.org/childrens-cooking-club
Bake outdoors with the Badger Forest School For little wild ones, there are woodland sessions designed for children and adults to work and play together, in a safe environment. Claire aims to have a fire and cook different campfire treats ranging from baked apples and pears stuffed with fresh blackberries and honey, homemade soup in a dutch oven, to making bread to cook on sticks over an open fire. There are delicious delights for all ages. Cooking Outdoors 25th April 10am to 12pm, Cardinham Woods. Badger Cubs (parent-toddler) sessions are every Monday and Wednesday morning 10.00 to 11.30 through term times.
All good cooking starts with great ingredients and there are some easy ways to teach your kids where it all comes from... • Get a rod, or just a net and go fishing. • Find out the best beaches to pick fresh mussels, whelks or cockles in season. • Visit a ‘pick your own’ fruits and vegetables farm. • Cook anything on an open fire together (even bread toasted on a stick tastes better). One of the advantages of learning in this rich natural environment is that kids can easily see the field-tofork journey. Fishing boats fill the harbours, vegetables and grain grow in the fields around, farm animals are grazing all around and chickens run around plenty of local farm shops ready to let you collect fresh eggs.

Take part in Jamie Oliver’s online cooking lesson on Friday 15th May with 1,300 ambassadors across the world! The Cornwall Food Foundation, the charity behind the Fifteen Cornwall Apprentice Programme and Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall restaurant, is putting Cornwall on the map in this year’s global Food Revolution Day on Friday 15th May. Food Revolution Day, first launched in 2012, inspires people of all ages to learn about food and how to cook it. This day is about getting kids food-smart and setting them up for a long, healthy life. Jamie Oliver believes that by educating children about food and cooking in a fun and engaging way, we can equip them with the basic skills they need to lead healthier, happier lives, for themselves and their future families. That’s why this year, Food Revolution Day is a global campaign

Who doesn’t love a lobster? The National Lobster Hatchery is one of a handful of marine biology laboratories in the world open to visitors. It is also a pioneering marine conservation, research and education charity. Its primary aim is to help conserve vulnerable lobster populations and preserve coastal marine biodiversity. As well as seeing first hand the fascinating progression of a lobster from egg to adult, you and the kids can learn about the wider marine environment and why we should protect it.
