inged by rugged cliffs and with rolling moorland at its centre, the landscape of Penwith has been shaped from eons of exposure to the elements, by harsh Atlantic storms whipping off the coast from all sides. Such exposure certainly has its upsides and you need only traverse a small section of Penwith’s coastline to witness the unerring beauty formed at the place where land meets sea. This year we’ve got plenty to pencil into your itinerary, from walks along the Tin Coast (page 12) where you’ll discover the iconic remains of Cornwall’s mining industry, to the lighthouses (page 14) that, to this day, stand sentinel, warding off wary mariners from the coastline’s most treacherous hazards. Such dramatic scenes and seascapes inspire artists from around the world. Head to the Jackson Foundation Gallery in St Just (page 29) or St Ives’ Artspace Gallery (page 30), where you find a wea th of tunn n wor fro a nu er of art t , each w th the r own unique styles. Or, if you’re hoping to unlock your own creativity, why not take a class at St Ives School of Painting (page 32)? For those in search of proper Cornish food and drink, we catch up with the team at Roly’s Fudge Pantry in St Ives (page 40) and sample the delightful range of gins on offer from local distillery, Pocketful of Stones (page 38). Perhaps you’re hoping to tie the knot here? If so, turn to page 19, where we explore Tregenna Castle in St Ives (page 19), winner of ‘Best Town Venue 2018’. All of this, plus a wealth of attractions and days out, means you find everyth n you need and ore n th year ded cated u de to ornwa wild west. Welcome to Explore Penwith!

The location is well worth a visit, being on the UK’s west extremity and offering staggering panoramic views out across the Atlantic. Botallack Near St Just Botallack would once have been very much alive with the sound of engines crushing extracted ore and the general humdrum of industry. Today, however, it makes for a peaceful visit, with nothing to hear but the waves. Botallack was a sub-marine mine, working half a mile out beneath the seabed, and there’s evidence to suggest that mining also took place here during the mid Roman period – around 200AD – and even during the Bronze Age!

L
ooking from the land, the Penwith coast is, if nothing else, welcoming, w th a n ficent eache , eaut fu bays and dramatic headlands. From the sea, however, it’s a different story indeed. For centuries, sailors have seen inhospitable beaches, vicious surf, forbidding cliffs and, although sometimes hidden just inches beneath the surface, reefs that would tear the hull from out beneath their feet. Countless ships have wrecked around Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and, until the Victorians really began to perfect the art of building lighthouses, there were only a few rudimentary beacons to warn mariners of the coast’s most deadly hazards. The mind boggles at the bravery of those who built and manned the lighthouses along the coast and the thought of spending four weeks at a time keeping the lights working, in solitude, seems a very daunting prospect indeed. Godrevy Lighthouse Standing on Godrevy Island with stunning views across to St Ives, Godrevy Lighthouse can be seen from just across the water. A National Trust car park on the headland has immediate access to walks along the coast path, and the views across to the lighthouse are often interspersed with sightings of seals from the seal colony on the other side of the headland.

Not Just Made In Britain,
Made In Cornwall!
When we started CREAM CORNWALL back in 2012, we had a vision for our brand but no money, so we had to make a lot of products ourselves. Luckily we both have a practical background in textiles, so we did a lot of screen printing, making lampshades, pouring candles and making diffusers. The only thing we couldn’t do was decorate and fire our bone china, but we did think about buying a kiln! We are passionate about getting our products made in Cornwall and if we can’t get it made here, then we always look for a manufacturer in the UK. We opened our first store in Falmouth in 2016 & our second one in St Ives in 2018 where you can see the beauty & quality of all our fantastic products. So please call in to take a look and buy something great, that’s made in Britain!

We discover Art Space Gallery on the waterfront in St Ives and meet the artists who are proud to exhibit there.
HELEN ATKINS
‘Surf at Gwithian’ Oil on board
A founder member of the gallery co-operative, Helen aims to capture feeling and mood in her paintings and is inspired by waves, contrasting summer tranquillity with the vibrant blues of harsh and powerful storm waves.
LESLEY NINNES Also a long time member, Lesley is known for her small oil paintings on board inspired by the town’s atmospheric seascapes. Porthmeor beach at low tide, in particular, fuels a continuing drive to portray the effect of ht, re ected light and symmetry in the marine VICTORIA HILLIARD environment. Trained in Graphic Design and Fine Art, Victoria combines a love of horticulture, natural history and the tactile quality of clay, using it as a medium to illustrate her ideas, inspired by the seasons, the land, light and sea.
LUCY MIDDLETON
‘Blue Harbour, St Ives’ Watercolour on paper
Inspired by the artistic history of St Ives, where she lives and works, Lucy experiments with her own response to the town. On receiving a degree in Visual Arts, Lucy relocated to Cornwall, soon joining Art Space Gallery where she currently sells her watercolours, fine art pr nt and card
TRACEY OLDHAM
‘A Place to Rest’ Oil on board racey wor re ect her urround n , the architecture, alleyways and sea fronts. Based in St Ives, she depicts unusual angles of familiar places, using strong lines and bold colour.
SARA POUND Since moving to Cornwall in the early 2000s, Sara has taken up life drawing. Painting in a traditional style, she uses watercolour, acrylics, inks and graphite – the subject dictating the medium.
JULIAN ROWE Over t e, u an ha refined h pa nt n ty e towards a generous impasto application of paint and the rich, sumptuous quality that this can convey. “If a painting of mine gives a sense of being part of a story or scene, then I feel that I have succeeded. he row of buildings that house the school are steeped in history. You may already know of the Porthmeor Studios as a creative sanctuary for the colony of artists drawn to the shimmering light of St Ives over the past century, and that previous tenants here have included Patrick Heron, Ben Nicholson and Sir Francis Bacon. What you may not know is that, nestled above the studios and the salty cellars, where fi her en t end the r net , t a fr end y community that has given both locals and visitors from across the country a space in which to learn and create for the past 80 years. With a team of professional tutors and a view that has inspired generations, St Ives School of Painting is a welcoming hub of inspiration for anyone looking to awaken their creativity; the perfect escape from everyday life, allowing you to focus on nothing but the art of making. The school offers a wealth of possibilities, with over a hundred short courses throughout the year with inspiring titles such as Ocean and Abstraction, Discover Painting, Expressive Watercolour and Contemporary Landscape. All the materials are provided too, so you needn’t bring anything with you. Beginners are always welcome and with small class sizes, there’s plenty of one-to-one
time with your tutor, meaning you can progress at your own pace. “I was a total beginner,” recalls student Jose Mejia, “I was literally afraid of oil painting. The tutor opened the door to set free my imagination and produce works I never dreamed possible.” Jo Baker, a student on the ‘Where Sea Meets Land’ course agrees, explaining: “As a newcomer to oil painting I’ve learned a lot. The teaching is excellent and my tutor has been very patient and informative. And, of course, St Ives is an incredibly inspirational place to work and learn.” Over the summer months, half-day workshops give you a taster version of the two to five day cour e and are a re a n way to experiment with different media and have fun. As participant Helen Rutherford puts it: “If you’re looking for a workshop that will deve op your confidence, and knowledge with warmth and good humour, then look no further.” To tap into your creative side and take part in one of the school’s workshops or classes, be sure to give the team a call!

A LOVE OF GIN We discover the inspiration behind Pocketful of Stones distillery and the mouth-watering spirit selection that they produce.
P
ocketful of Stones was born when two brothers, Shaun and Dale Bebington, tinkered with gin recipe after gin recipe; discovering the perfect balance of botanicals that took them back to their roots, the outdoors and the ocean. CREAM OF THE DUCHY We speak to Rebecca, co-founder of Cream Cornwall, about their newest store in St Ives.
E
stablished in 2012, Cream Cornwall has become synonymous with luxurious home wares that are inspired by the beauty of this captivating county. So popular are the wares that founders Rebecca and Alison produce that they can be found in homes around the o e, and of cour e, n the pa r a hp store in Falmouth, right here in the Duchy. Offering a wide range of products, the team also offers a bespoke interior design service. When we caught up with them last summer, they delightedly informed us of the news that they had opened a second store, in the popular seaside town of St Ives. Rebecca and Alison have more than 45 years of experience between them in the textile and interiors industry and it’s this that has helped them create such unique designs. Centred upon traditional craftsmanship, their designs showcase their strong belief in quality and their passion and commitment to keeping their products made in Britain, many of them in their own studio in Cornwall. One example of a fabulous product made right here in the Duchy is Cream Cornwall’s stylish range of lampshades. Not only are they designed with the coast in mind, but also made from fabric printed in Staffordshire and assembled above their shop in Falmouth. We asked Rebecca about their decision to open a new store in St Ives. “We believe in retail and the experience of actually going into a shop, rather than clicking a button online. People love to touch and feel what they’re buying and we believe our shops give customers a feel good experience that is hard to emulate when buying online. We plan to open more shops in the future and,
if all goes to plan, there’s even the prospect of venturing overseas! Since opening our store in St Ives it’s been absolutely mad.” And it’s no wonder! Anybody who’s laid eyes on Cream Cornwall’s range will understand that their designs and products really are unique, but not just that; they’re stunning and what’s more, they’re built to last. When you buy a piece for yourself – whether it’s a lampshade or a u ptuou oor cu h on you can re t assured you’ve made a purchase that you and your family will treasure for years to come.

FROM DERBY TO CORNWALL We catch up with Tim Wood about the lure of the sea and how it drew him and his wife, Heather, to open Cornwall’s luxury getaway for grown ups – the Oceanic Suite Hotel, Falmouth.
W

e hear from Tim and Heather, who give us an insight into their creation and share just a snippet of their story. “I have lived in Derbyshire most of my life,” Tim tells us. “I’d recently sold my publishing business and was wondering what to do next. Whilst chatting idly to my now w fe eather, he to d e of her any childhood holidays to Cornwall, especially the e of c y, and of her on he d de re to live in Cornwall. Well, I didn’t need telling twice!” Within months, their house was on the ar et, four of the r even ch dren had own the roost and Tim had rented a large old house behind a garden centre just outside of Bude. “And so, with three children still in tow, our adventure to Cornwall to live by the sea began.” Tim continues: “Having initially settled on the north coast, one of the ejected sons decided to go to university in Falmouth and within weeks, was telling us that this was the place to be. We were not convinced – what appeals to an 18 year old is often not the same as would appeal to a slightly more ature p u year o d However, two trips to see him later and having sampled a good selection of the pubs, restaurants and activities on offer, Tim tells us, “we had to begrudgingly admit he might be right. We have now lived in Falmouth for over six years and we still think it’s fantastic!” Having decided that Falmouth really was the place to be, Tim and Heather set about looking for a business to run and a place
to live. After a few days spent scouring the internet, Tim explains, “we came across a dilapidated old hotel which appeared to be going cheap but was in a perfect position – on the ed e of town, o on y a five nute walk to the shops, bars and restaurants, but not too c o e to e no y, and a a n, u t five minutes away from the beach, Pendennis Castle, and the lovely walks that the peninsula has to offer. What was not to love? e oon found out n arr va for our fir t viewing, I thought Heather was going to run away screaming. Walking into the Palm Court Hotel, as it was then, was like walking into a 1970s time warp – a mixture of Fawlty Towers and Rising Damp. The dining room sported a plywood railway carriage as the main serving area and there was a particularly hideous mural covering the main wall. he top oor wa conde ned o we cou d only imagine what it was like. In addition, there were no foundations at the back – in fact, a tree was actually growing through the back wall! – and the side extension was falling away from the main house. “So, I took Heather to the pub and after a few bottles of wine, persuaded her that it could be a fun project. Six weeks later, we were the proud owners!” To read Tim and Heather’s full story and to ee the ncred e fin hed re u t, v t www ocean chote co u our tory

SOMETHING
to shout about
We take a look at Now Kitchens and Bathrooms, a Helston based firm that’s been receiving rave reviews from a number of satisfied clients.
T
here are a number of kitchen and bathroom studios in Cornwall offering high quality bespoke kitchens and bathrooms as well as professional service, an impressive example being Now Kitchens and Bathrooms, Helston. Indeed, all you need to do is head to the Now Kitchens website or Trustpilot to see a wealth of rave reviews, many praising the immersive service that allows customers to env a e what the e act fin hed product will look like and remarking on the sheer professionalism and personable nature of the team. The team’s kitchens are beautiful, but we all know it’s the partnership with exemplary tradesmen that can make the difference. Now tchen fitter, hr , de cr ed y one delighted customer as “amazing – so skilful, considerate, helpful and thoughtful, as well as clean and tidy… he was totally dedicated to the project and arranged the scheduling of all necessary plumbing and electrical visits. The confidence the tea have n the r product and delivery is so reassuring.” Owner Darren’s philosophy has always been to assist customers to choose the right solution, rather than to sell to them. “I like to share my industry knowledge and experience to honestly advise our customers, enabling them to make informed decisions to create the room they really want, rather than what we want to sell.” Also part of the team is Showroom Manager Mike Green, who has
more than a decade of industry experience. Mike has worked on many of their most exciting projects, from small spaces where storage is the winning formula, to extension projects where communal living desires can be accommodated. Each one becomes personal from the concept and design, right the way through to the delivery. And then there’s Kitchen Designer Jono Peck. “As someone who has always been engaged with design and photography, I really enjoy combining the two to help people improve their living space. A new kitchen is such a personal decision and whether our customers know exactly what they are after or are looking for some inspiration, the showroom we have and the photo realistic designs never fail to keep the process exciting. Adding in the personal touches and ideas is so rewarding.” So, if you want to be left thinking “at last we have a kitchen that is an absolute pleasure to use,” or that you “wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Now Kitchens or to use them in the future”, why not head to the website and et the confidence you need, fro rev ew written by people just like you.

BEYOND We discover how Cornwall Hospice Care is doing more than ever to support those affected by terminal illness.
C é ABOVE Paul Brinsley, Cornwall Hospice Care's Chief Executive
ornish healthcare charity, Cornwall Hospice Care, is reporting a successful extension of its services to support terminally ill patients and their families and carers in the community. Over the past 12 months, the charity has launched two initiatives – Neighbourhood Hubs in Penzance and Wadebridge, and Open Houses in Bude, St Ives, Perranporth, Tintagel and Stenalees. The move was prompted by the changing needs of patients, many of whom want to be cared for at or near their homes. Gina Starnes, the charity’s Engagement Project Manager tells us: “Our two hospices in St Austell and Hayle will always be at the heart of our charity, but they provide acute care for very sick, terminally ill patients. What we wanted to do was extend our specialist care to those who are living with their illnesses and just need information and advice and some therapy support. Our Neighbourhood Hubs and Open Houses have been extremely successful and we’ve already supported an extra 300 patients in the community.” Community Engagement Nurse, Lollie Brewer, continues: “We’ve got so much valuable experience. Our aim is to provide information and peace of mind for patients who don’t need to come into our hospices. We’re also providing support at some GP surgeries, at community gatherings and events, and in the last six months, we’ve had conversations with 215 people who may need our support in the future. We’re also working with our charity shops and will soon be running focus groups to see how we can better support those with learning disabilities, the traveller communities and the homeless.” Paul Brinsley is the Chief Executive of Cornwall Hospice Care: “I’m delighted with the success of this extension to our care services in, and for, Cornwall. We know there’s a growing demand and our plan is to develop these initiatives, opening more where appropriate.”
This fantastic charity actively encourages patients to provide feedback. One patient who attended a recent Neighbourhood Hub session said: “I never thought I could access a high quality service like this so close to my house, and you’re not expected to pay anything. It’s unbelievable and I am so grateful.” Another commented: “My mood changes every time I come to the Hub. I feel listened to and important. I’m really lucky to have been given this opportunity.”
