Introduction The Undergraduate Handbook aims to provide Engineers Australia Student and Graduate members with the resources to begin the search for vacation employment or graduate employment. This handbook gives undergraduate students and graduates the details of organisations that may offer vacation employment or graduate employment in the following year. These details include items such as the best contact person, closing dates for applications and the sort of work the company and student may undertake. The handbook also provides resources for job planning which will be useful when preparing for your career as an engineer. Students and graduates are encouraged to use the information contained in this handbook to investigate as many opportunities as possible. The information within the handbook was obtained from engineering organisations based in South Australia, interstate and overseas. Engineers Australia expresses our thanks to all organisations that have demonstrated their support for the future of engineering in South Australia by participating in this handbook. We hope that the information contained in this handbook is valuable in your search for employment or work experience and we look forward to working with you throughout your career. Development beyond Graduation The Professional Development Program The Engineers Australia Professional Development Program is the preferred route to achieve Chartered Status in one of the three occupational categories: Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng); Chartered Engineering Technologist (CEngT) and Chartered Engineering Officer (CEngO). The first few years of a graduate engineer’s experience is vital to their development as a competent and responsible engineer. This period is referred to as professional formation. Employers stand to reap enormous benefits from enabling graduates to analyse and record this formative experience in a way that optimises achievement of professional competencies. This is facilitated by the appointment of an appropriate mentor within the enterprise to oversee the graduate’s progress.

Chartered Status (CPEng, CEngT & CEngO) Ahead of you soon are two important bridges to cross; passing your final exams and finding your first job as a professional engineer. When you commence working as a professional engineer you will be entering yet another steep learning curve; learning by doing. You will commence and continue to develop and demonstrate a range of competencies throughout your working life. After several years in the work force, depending upon your abilities and experiences, you should be in a position to be able to satisfy Engineers Australia’s National Generic Competency Standards in order to become a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng). Realistically, unless you have had extensive pre-graduating experience, this will take you from three to five years. The status of Chartered Professional Engineer is the benchmark in Australia for the fully qualified professional engineer, who is competent to practice independently and ethically in his or her field of engineering. By keeping your Chartered Status (CPEng) current and maintaining the required level of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) you may qualify for the National Professional Engineers Register (NPER). The NPER is a national government sponsored, independently directed public register that is administered by Engineers Australia. Being registered on the NPER means that people from all over the world, be they clients, employers or others, are able to verify your engineering credentials with confidence by simply visiting the website, www.nerb.org.au. For more information about Chartered Status or the Professional Development Program please visit www.engineersaustralia.org.au or contact the South Australia Division office on 08 8202 7100.
