2013 Seminar Program Australian Cost Engineering Society The Fundamentals of Controlling Projects to Cost and Time: The program for 2013 expands on previous years with new presenters and a different perspective on these topics of wide interest to Cost Engineers.

PROJECT INITIATION – START IT RIGHT* Wednesday, 20 February, 6:00pm for 6:30pm – 8:00pm Engineers Australia, 21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne The way you start a project is a good indicator for how it will finish. Project and progress performance measures must be owned by the teams being measured. In addition to systems and procedures, the establishment of a culture of fairness and transparency is essential. This presentation is by Tony Sim, Manager of Project Delivery, Southern Australian Operations for the very successful construction managers, Worley Parsons. Tony is a career professional in Project Controls. He sees the problems and how to fix them and his experience gives him a valuable perspective on how to start a project right.

ESTIMATING - GETTING IT RIGHT (breakfast meeting)* Tuesday, 19 March, 7:00am for 7:30am – 8:30am Engineers Australia, 21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne The real nuts & bolts on capital cost estimating… where the data comes from & how to put it together for various types of estimates. Stuart Chalmers has had a long career in all sorts of estimating and project control and will build on his 2012 presentation to show you in detail how estimates are created.

PLANNING AND SCHEDULING - TIME IT RIGHT* Tuesday, 16 April, 6:00pm for 6:30pm – 8:30pm Ground Floor Auditorium, Engineers Australia, 21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne

Alan Bolger will look at planning and scheduling a project from engineering design through procurement, contracts and construction to commissioning. What matters is communicating in ways appropriate to each stakeholder and focussing on the key project drivers that define success. Alan Bolger is an accomplished planner and controls manager who will show you what really matters from a long experience that includes such diverse projects as highways, bridges, rail, frigate destroyers, chemical plants, minerals processing, and telecommunications.

PROJECT CONTROLS- KEEP IT ON TRACK* Tuesday, 21 May, 6:00pm for 6:30pm – 8:00pm Engineers Australia, 21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne An expert in project controls, Anthony Heazelwood will explain the systems and more importantly the skills and culture that enables project teams to deliver to cost and on time, with no company jolting surprises.

Anthony Heazelwood is the Manager Project Systems Implementation for Worley Parsons and is a Civil Engineer with over 20 years in management of project controls. * These presentations are subject to change

2013 Seminar Program Australian Cost Engineering Society COMMUNICATION - REPORT IT RIGHT * Tuesday, 18 June, 6:00pm for 6:30pm – 8:00pm Engineers Australia, 21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne Stephen Lewis of Thiess Pty Ltd will talk about the critical role of communication in project controls – How should it really happen? The presentation covers reporting subjects such as; content to keep it simple and publish on time; transparency and responsibility to stakeholders; ethics and professional support. Stephen Lewis is a Civil Engineer with an MBA and a long career in project controls and commercial management of major projects.

Topic to be announced* Tuesday, 15 July, 6:00pm for 6:30pm – 8:00pm Engineers Australia, 21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne

Advanced topics in Cost Engineering: MANAGING THE UNKNOWNS (RISKS / ASSUMPTIONS/ CONTINGENCY)* Tuesday, 20 August, 6:00pm for 6:30pm – 8:00pm Engineers Australia, 21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne How do we overcome the barriers to exposing “unknown knowns” on a project? How can we use value management techniques to develop cost effective risk treatment solutions? John Paterson will take you through how risk and contingency management is done and draw upon his considerable experience in finding practical approaches. This meeting will be followed by the AGM of the ACES from 8:00 to 8:30 PM. Feel free to stay on and join us.

PLANNING and SCHEDULING PACKAGES where are they at? (breakfast meeting)* Tuesday, 17 September, 7:00am for 7:30am – 8:30am Engineers Australia, 21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne A critical review of the leading scheduling software packages currently available and supported in Australia [Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, Astra and others] and a guess about the future. Paul Harris is an expert in scheduling software with many books to his credit and will bring us all up to date on the current offerings and their applicability.

PRODUCTIVITY & LEARNING CURVE* Tuesday, 15 October, 6:00pm for 6:30pm – 8:00pm Engineers Australia, 21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne This will be a panel discussion with learning curve examples based on experiences of the panel members in the construction industry. Learning curves are usually associated with manufacturing but they apply to all repetitive work. Understanding learning curve effects will allow projects to reap the significant benefits. The Panel will be chaired by John Paterson who has made a particular study of these issues. * These presentations are subject to change
