Connecting With Defence Engineering The continuous stream of media releases and presentations on the successes, problems and concerns of defence projects and operations constantly highlights the multi-facetted, complex and technological advances of defence engineering. They also serve as a reminder of the importance of effective organisations and procedures for the conduct of complex and large engineering projects and operations and more recently the problems which can arise if they fail. Engineering within the defence environment includes the design, development, operation and sustainment of complex systems often in hostile and remote locations and relies heavily on the performance of integrated engineering teams, industry support, and effective project and contract management. In addition the systems have very long operational lives and require updating to avoid obsolescence. Increasingly, defence operations are in support of humanitarian operations both domestically and internationally and therefore must be integrated into a whole of government response which poses interesting military/civil interface situations. Furthermore, defence engineering is undertaken at numerous locations throughout Australia and overseas and involves large and smaller companies – as such it forms an important part of the national engineering capacity. Consequently, keeping current with the complexities and developments in defence engineering is a challenge to the learned society role of Engineers Australia and the Australian Society for Defence Engineering (ASDE), one of its technical societies. This learned society role requires the maintenance, extension and promotion of the body of knowledge of engineering and the provision and promotion of discipline-specific continuing professional development. Technical societies and other Engineers Australia groups assist the colleges in this learned society role by the provision of forums for the various specific technical disciplines and by their connection to specific industries. ASDE assumes the lead in this role for defence engineering by arranging presentations by engineers from Defence and defence industry, by arranging various conferences, by the preparation of submissions in conjunction with Engineers Australia to Government and other organisations, and this year has sponsored an Eminent Speaker series by Rear Admiral Moffitt on the Future Submarine Project. A recent presentation in Sydney on Life Cycle Management and Rebuilding the Engineering Capability in the RAN (View video stream) which attracted 110 including many young engineers and the course at the School of Military Engineering, is typical of the contribution of ASDE. NEWS e-Learning Survey Members of Engineers Australia are invited to participate in an online e-learning survey designed to help evaluate and support members' e-learning experiences. The survey is being run by the Professional Association Research Network (PARN), of which Engineers Australia is a member. E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching and includes module, webinars, podcasts and more.
