A Regional Way Forward Living in a regional area can have its lifestyle benefits but also tyranny-of-distance disadvantages. Our Southern Highlands and Tablelands Regional Group (SHTRG) located in BowralMittagong halfway between Sydney and Canberra is no exception. Traditional site visits proved unpopular with members, so seven years ago our Committee embarked on an annual programme of monthly Seminar Dinners with talks by expert Guest Speakers on topical themes (Sustainable Energy, Water Resources, Peak Oil...Engineering Challenges) to inform our members and the public of the key issues impacting on the sustainability and well-being of our society, and the roles engineers are having in resolving these issues. Our Seminar Dinners have been well attended over the years, averaging between 40–50 attendees comprising 50% members (who accrue CPD points) and 50% public patrons (spouses/other professionals). PDF copies of past presentations plus associated videos by all our expert Guest Speakers are posted on our SHTRG website: http://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/shtrg. For the past three years our Regional Group has been involved in the annual Rotary-EA Southern Highlands Science and Engineering Challenge. The SH Challenge this year was held on May 1st, when some 280 Year 10 students from 9 regional high schools participated in a very successful challenge at the Mittagong RSL. The Challenge is organised by Newcastle University and run locally by a joint team of volunteers from our Group and Rotary with much needed sponsorship from local firms. The student teams of 4 learn how creative thinking, problem solving and team work can be both challenging and good fun as they work on a range of projects from hovercraft and electricity distribution to ecological housing and bridge building. The Challenge objective is to encourage students to select maths and science subjects when they make their HSC choices later in the year. Our Group is also involved in promoting engineering as a career for young people through participation in the annual SH Manufacturers Cluster Careers Expo in June and visits to local high schools in Engineering Week. In all, our Group has a very busy programme of activities annually, none of which could happen without the commitment of a highly competent and professional Committee. However, a challenge remains – how to integrate our Tableland members more effectively. Dr Tom Romberg FIEAust CPEng Chairman, Southern Highlands & Tablelands Regional Group
