The Future Of Nuclear Power The 61 power reactors currently under construction worldwide are generally developments of the proven low temperature water cooled reactors which have been in existence since the 1950s. Modern developments including modular construction reducing the cost and construction time, and passive safety systems mean these reactors provide efficient baseload electricity generation contributing to a low emissions energy solution for many countries. An International program led by the USA – the Generation IV Forum (GIF) – is developing the exciting next generation of high temperature reactors. The high temperature operation, as well as increasing the efficiency of electricity generation, will also provide process heat for applications like oil shale and oil sands processing, coal gasification and hydrogen production. Several high temperature nuclear systems have been examined, particularly in the period up to the 1980’s, but many could not achieve their potential due to limitations in materials then available. The next Engineers Australia Nuclear Engineering Panel (NEP) presentation on 23rd May 2012 at Chatswood will examine the challenges and progress to date in producing materials to withstand the extreme conditions of radiation, temperature and chemical environment. The eminent international expert, Prof Lyndon Edwards, now Head of the Institute of Materials Engineering at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) will present “Developing Advanced Nuclear Structural Materials for use in Next Generation Nuclear Power Plant”. The NEP has been in existence since 1975 providing information and holding regular technical meetings on nuclear engineering and science topics. When the subject of nuclear power is raised, the issues of particular concern are typically safety, cost and radioactive waste. The NEP meetings program for 2012 includes presentations on all these topics, and more. See the Nuclear Engineering Panel website https://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/nuclearengineering-panel for details of the 2012 technical presentations program and also information and links on nuclear related issues. NEWS Call for Young Professional Engineer Nominations It is time to recognise the high performers of Sydney engineering and nominate them for our 2012 personal awards program. These engineering individuals will have a record of academic and career achievements, service to the engineering team and to the community. The Engineering Excellence Awards Sydney Division acknowledges the professionalism and pursuit of excellence by engineers throughout the country. The program also identifies, recognises, rewards and promotes individuals in Australian engineering. Young Engineers may self nominate for these awards or can be nominated by an employer, peer
