The Clerk of Orphans' Court and/or the Register of Wills within each individual county in Pennsylvania handles information, forms, and the actual registering of marriage license applications. Both individuals must appear in person together to complete (and file) the application for marriage. A Social Security number and a government-issued photo ID are required for both parties. The medical examination and blood test are no longer required. In Pennsylvania, if either party is under 18, the consent of a parent or legal guardian is needed. Applicants who have been previously married must provide the following information concerning the dissolution of the most recent marriage: divorces - must present a certified copy of the decree (if maiden name has been resumed, must present that document); annulments - the same information as is required for divorces; and widowed - the date of death of the deceased spouse is needed. Blood relatives down to and including first cousins may not marry under Pennsylvania law.

A marriage license becomes valid on the third day following application or the next business day if the third day falls on a weekend or holiday. The license is valid for 60 days from the third day following the date of application. The wedding ceremony need not be performed in the county in which the license was issued. However, an out-ofstate marriage license cannot be used in Pennsylvania, nor can a Pennsylvania marriage license be used in another state. Planning a wedding can be a stressful undertaking. Couples want their big day to be as perfect as possible, and for a bride-to-be, the linchpin is often her wedding dress. The venue could be breathtaking, the meal delicious, and the music divine, but if a woman doesn’t feel beautiful in her dress, her enjoyment and memories of her big day may be compromised. While the day of the ceremony is the ultimate reward, the act of selecting the right gown can be one of the most exciting moments of the wedding planning process. Shopping for a dress, however, is not a task that should be tackled without preparation. While the idea of discovering the perfect dress by sheer luck may seem highly romantic and is at least plausible, odds are if a bride simply wings it, she may end the day more defeated than delighted. Prepping in advance, rather than rushing straight to the racks, will help to ensure your search stays fruitful and satisfying.

Start With a Plan

Many brides-to-be have spent nearly their entire lives dreaming about their wedding day. Sure, the identity of the man at the end of the aisle was unknown at the time, but it is not uncommon for a woman to have determined specific ideals about her big day when she was young. Perhaps you have known since you were in elementary school that you wanted a strapless gown with crystal beading on the bodice or a voluminous affair with numerous petticoats and a cathedral train. In most cases, though, a woman may simply have known that she wanted to look gorgeous and left the details to be determined. Regardless, it is best to research styles before heading to the shops. Decide at once if certain designs clash with your preferred style. If you have always despised turtlenecks, eliminate any options with a high-necked collar. If high heels are your personal nemesis, nix the long, elaborate train and opt for a hem that just skims the toes or select a tealength gown that will allow you to display a bedazzled pair of ballet flats or jeweled flip-flops. If you already know that you want a vintage or country theme, do not

spend time fawning over a dress that clashes with the overall atmosphere. Keep in mind that what looks amazing in a magazine spread may not suit your frame or your aesthetic.

Gauge Your Budget

Weddings are not cheap, and a wedding dress is often an elaborate expense. Calculate your wardrobe budget before heading to the boutiques. If you have always desired a couture look, starting saving in advance. Be sure not to tap into funds already designated for other aspects of the wedding. It is one thing to look gorgeous, but it is another entirely to look great at the expense of drab surroundings and awful food. Sure, a highfashion gown may ensure you look wonderful in wedding photographs, but do you want to have to give up a honeymoon to fund it? When you do head out to the shops, inform the sales assistant up front of your price range. Factor in ahead of time all the additional costs of accessories and extras, such as shoes, a veil, decorative hair ornaments, jewelry, and more. These items, when added together, may be a considerable expense, and the total should already be accounted for in your calculations. Be firm when relaying that you do not wish to see dresses outside of your budget. Designers are well aware than brides come from a variety of circumstances and tailor their offerings accordingly. Beautiful gowns are available with a multitude of price tags; have faith that you will find one you love in your budget.

Contemplate Accessories

It is best to consider accessories before shopping. Maybe you are planning to incorporate your grandmother’s handmade veil or want to look at gowns with a

detachable bustle, overlay, or train that will provide two distinct looks for ceremony and reception. Perhaps you want a strapless gown, but you also desire a decorative shawl or bolero jacket. Do not waste time trying on dresses that do not fit your requirements. It is certainly OK to try on a few samples that differ from your preference (you may adore something once it’s on), but don’t spend hours struggling in and out of varied gowns hoping for inspiration. Another element to keep in mind is whether your attendants will require accessories, such as wraps or coordinating handbags. Knowing beforehand what extras each outfit will require will help you to determine cost and if you can purchase all accessories at one location.

Do Your Homework

Gather a listing of all the shops you wish to visit in advance. Go online or call ahead to confirm hours and whether or not an appointment is required. Determine if the business offers an on-site tailor or seamstress for alterations or dyeing services in the event that shoes need to specially prepared to color-coordinate. Check the boutique’s website to see if they offer more than dresses. Do they offer custom designs? Perhaps they have a separate men’s wear department or an elaborate selection of jewelry to complement their inventory. Another consideration to keep in mind when interacting with bridal sales staff is their expertise in the field. Feel free to ask attendants questions about current styles or in-season color choices. It’s their job to

be aware of popular trends, and they should be well-skilled in helping you select a style that best suits your body type and preference. Also, since dress selection is typically one of the first elements addressed on a bride’s checklist, do not hesitate to ask sales staff if they can recommend local vendors for other aspects not yet finalized for your event. Being in the business and constantly dealing with wedding parties, they may have information regarding other professionals including florists, bands, caterers, or transportation companies.

Bring Props

Every woman knows that an outfit will look different with all “the trimmings.” For something as important as a wedding gown, it is best to leave as little as possible to the imagination. When you go shopping, bring shoes of the approximate height as the ones you intend to wear. Wear supportive undergarments or a corset and bring a strapless bra from home if you plan to try on off-the-shoulder styles. If you intend to wear your hair up, do so on the day you look at gowns. There’s no need to schedule an appointment with a stylist, but a general upsweep will help provide a basic appreciation of the way each silhouette will appear. Also, consider shopping with no or minimal makeup so as not to soil or stain the dresses.

Select a Shopping Crew

It is absolutely expected that a bride will want the opinions of others while shopping. Feel free to bring along your mother, as well as your sisters or best friends, but don’t

go overboard. Only invite those individuals whose opinions you truly value. Too many viewpoints may only lead to confusion and possible anxiety. Bring a camera or phone capable of taking high-quality shots of the options you especially like. Be sure to take front and back views of the ensemble. Remember, this is your day. Be prepared to stick up for your choices, and don’t let one of your wing team talk you out of something (within reason) that you feel truly beautiful in.

Stick to a Time Frame

Dress shopping can be exhausting. It can often be emotional and draining. Even if you do find the dress of your dreams, you may feel done in at day’s end. You may not find your ideal match on day one. Set aside a predetermined length of time to shop and be sure to stay within your allotted time frame. Too long of a day will tap out both yourself and your shopping partners, and individuals may become bored or irritable. Consider making a reservation for dinner afterward, as all involved will most likely be hungry and need to unwind. Having the opportunity to relax will also give you ample opportunity to discuss all of the varied options of the day.

By Krista Hurley It may have seemed like a blissful dream when the love of your life got down on one knee, pulled out a ring, and asked you to spend the rest of your life with him. You may still be on Cloud Nine every time you glance at your engagement ring or recall each moment of your fiancé's proposal, but let’s face it: A lot of planning has to happen between “Will you marry me?” and “I do.” A couple’s wedding is a special day, so it’s no wonder brides-to-be and their fiancés spend hundreds and even thousands of hours planning and preparing to make sure their big day is just the way they dreamed. There’s a reason that “Bridezilla” has become a widely recognized term. For all the joy there is in being engaged and in planning certain aspects of a wedding, there are plenty of times when the process can be stressful. But fear not! There are ways to prevent the transformation into Bridezilla, that not-so-pleasing mutation. From caring for yourself to taking time to relax, a variety of healthy habits can be seamlessly sprinkled throughout your event planning, proving that wellness is more than just a fairy tale when it comes to wedding preparation. So wave goodbye to Bridezilla and hello to your happily ever after.

Properly Fuel Your Body: What your parents told you at the dinner table when you were a kid - “Eat your veggies!” - is no less relevant now that you’re an adult planning a wedding. The nutrients found in vegetables can bolster your immune system and boost your energy. The general rule of

thumb is that the more colorful a natural food is, the more nutrients it contains. So keep that in mind as you eat plenty of vegetables, as well as fruits. Also, be sure to consume plenty of high-quality protein, which can come from various types of meat, beans, and other sources. Of equal importance is staying hydrated. Here’s some hydration trivia: By the time you start feeling thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. Have water on hand and make it a habit to sip it - not gulp it - consistently throughout each day. Staying hydrated will keep you energized and focused, which is a plus for busy days as you plan your wedding. Not a fan of water? Water-based beverages, such as juices, are OK, but just make sure to keep an eye on the sugar content. Sugar consumption has been shown to increase feelings of irritability, among other drawbacks, which may make it easier for Bridezilla to rear her stressed-out head. So when at all possible, refrain from sugary, processed foods. Perhaps most importantly, never skip a meal! It can be easy to sacrifice food for the tantalizing thought of getting something else on your checklist

accomplished, but beware of “hanger” (that’s a combination of “hunger” and “anger,” referring to the irritability caused by hunger). If you know an upcoming week will be swamped with appointments, make a large, healthy recipe and freeze it in single-serving portions so you can have simple, alreadyprepared meals for later in the week.

Get Some Shut-Eye and Some Exercise:

You may think you can’t afford to spend much time sleeping, but in reality, you can’t afford not to. A lack of sleep can lead to irritation and can have a detrimental effect on your immune system’s strength and your ability to focus. On the other hand, getting an ample amount of sleep, but not too much, on a consistent basis can improve your mood, re-energize you, and even cause you to look refreshed - say goodbye to those little bags under your eyes! Try to avoid stimuli that might prevent sleep, especially right before you go to bed: screen time, caffeine, and alcohol, to name a few. Regular exercise can also help you to defeat stress and irritability. Exercising causes your brain to produce endorphins, a chemical that will improve your mood. So make exercise part of your weekly routine. Find something that you like to do and stick with it. Sure, that could be running, taking exercise classes, or cycling, but it could also be walking your dog, cleaning the house, or cranking your music and dancing.

Kick Stress to the Curb:

First of all, when you feel yourself getting stressed out, pause and take three deep breaths to calm yourself down. Also, don't hesitate to call close friends

or family members when you feel overwhelmed. Chances are, they'll be able to talk you through some of the stress, calm your nerves, and help you refocus. You can also find peace of mind by scheduling “trial runs” before your wedding day for everything and everyone, from your makeup artist and hairstylist to the skin products and cosmetics you plan to use. You can even practice putting on your dress, not by putting it on headfirst but by stepping into it and pulling it up, which is most likely the way you will don it on your wedding day, when your hair and makeup are already done. It can remove a lot of stress knowing in advance that your test run went off without a hitch and that, for example, you won’t find out lastminute that you have an allergy to a cosmetic product. Don’t be afraid to delegate. You’re not Superwoman, so you’re going to need some help. There are aspects of wedding preparation that others can do for you, and you’ll find that relinquishing control of these minutia to a well-trusted friend or relative can take a lot off your plate. Above all, pay attention to your body and know the warning signs of stress. For example, if you’re out to dinner and you nearly bite the waiter's arm off when he asks if you'd prefer ranch or Italian dressing, you might be stressed. In addition to a short temper, other common symptoms of stress include headaches, sleep problems, difficulty concentrating, an upset stomach, and low morale. Recognize these red flags early and deal with the root cause.

Give Yourself a Chance to Relax:

Your big day is probably getting just about all of your focus, and you probably feel like you need to go, go, go in order to get everything done. The truth is, though, that can eventually leave you feeling frazzled, stressed, and running on empty. Finding a retreat from the regular hustle and bustle will give you more fortitude to tackle the tasks at hand, so it’s important to recharge your batteries before

they're low. Plan some relaxing activities ahead of time, whether they're for you and your fiancé, for you and your friends, or just for yourself. Be intentional about spending time with your fiancé. Ask him to be in charge of planning special date nights for the two of you. With the busyness of your schedules, set aside that time to enjoy reconnecting while not discussing wedding details. Invite your bridal party or other friends to indulge in a chick flick marathon or some other relaxing activity. No matter what you choose, make sure you get some laughs; laughter has been said to be the best medicine, and it's also a great ab workout! Give yourself some time alone. Some quiet time may still your mind and re-energize you. Curl up with a good book and a soothing cup of tea or soak in the bathtub. Take a leisurely walk in nature - sans cellphone - or spend some time indulging in a hobby that’s fallen by the wayside. Make sure you pay your body some attention, too. There’s nothing wrong with a little pampering, and spas usually offer ample options for brides-to-be who are looking for a way to de-stress. Massages are a great way to show your body some TLC, and spas may offer a massage and facial combo or other specials. Massage parties or spa days are also options if you’re looking for a laid-back way to spend time with your bridal party or relax with your fiancé. Additionally, some spas may offer specials for the day before or morning of a wedding.

When your big day finally arrives, you'll feel a mix of excitement and nerves. But it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Start your wedding day preparation the night before by getting a good night's sleep so you will wake up feeling and looking refreshed, relaxed, and ready to greet the day. Consider scheduling some alone

Also, make sure you eat a substantial breakfast to give you energy that will last for hours. To avoid having your blood pressure skyrocket, make sure you plan your day effectively, from having your hair and makeup done to determining how much time it will take to travel to the wedding site. Don't forget to set aside some extra time for pre-wedding photos, too. Remember, it's better to overestimate how long each component of your wedding day to-do list will take than to underestimate. Designate someone to be the trusted keeper of your cellphone on your wedding day and to respond to the calls and texts you receive. That way, you can spend your time doing final preparations instead of answering texts from cousin Trixie about how to get to the wedding site.

There probably aren’t too many love stories that begin with a batch of bad seafood, but that is exactly what first brought Jeralynn and Jeremiah together. One lazy summer afternoon, Jeralynn and her friend Todd both ordered tuna burgers while dining out for lunch. When the tuna burgers left them both feeling ill, it was Jeremiah, Todd’s roommate, who saved the day by driving them to urgent care and nursing them back to health. That fateful case of food poisoning eventually led to a surprise proposal atop the Empire State Building. (Jeremiah had to pop the question twice - the first thing out of Jeralynn’s mouth was “What are you doing?” The second thing was “Yes!”) After being engaged for five months, the couple tied the knot during an intimate ceremony and celebrated with a reception that was every bit as unique and interesting as their “how we met” story. Jeralynn took the time to discuss their big day and the wedding planning process.

What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? What inspired you to start there?

Panic! Just kidding… We have a twofold answer. We began with a rough understanding of what we wanted to spend. We both didn’t want a terribly traditional or large wedding, so we also started making a list of the family and friends closest to us who we wanted to share in our special day. With these two things in mind - a budget and rough head count - we were able to figure things out pretty easily from there.

How did you choose a style for your wedding? What unique touches did you add to your wedding?

The Wedding Planner

We chose a style that was just us. I guess we’ve been pegged “classy/ vintage.” In getting married in Lancaster, we were able to simplify, use the beautiful surroundings, and add elements that we liked. First and foremost, we brewed all the beer for our wedding! We are big homebrewers and beer connoisseurs, and this was the perfect way to bring our personalities out. We also enjoy pictures, so instead of a traditional guest book, we had our guests take a Polaroid of themselves, sign it, and hang it up in the space. We now have a lovely Polaroid guest book of our day. I also wanted to remember all of our family members, near and far, who had supported us in our lives, so I asked our families to compile their wedding photos, and we displayed them on a table the day of the wedding. One of my absolute favorite moments of the day, though, would have to be having the sister of the bride, Jessica, lead our ceremony. Not only was it a once-in-a-lifetime moment, but to share it with her meant a lot to us. We also had the brother of the bride, father of the groom, and friend of the couple involved in meaningful ways during our ceremony. I also have to send a huge shout out to the mother of the bride, Rhonda, and the aunt of the bride, Roberta, for being the most creative and giving people in this process. They took the space and created a beautiful, perfect setting for our wedding - from lantern details to linens to flowers, these two did it all, and we couldn’t be more thankful! How did you select the bride’s dress and the groom’s attire? Did you know what you wanted in advance or base your decision on what you saw while shopping?

Luckily for Jeremiah, he was in the market for suits around the time we were wedding planning, so he seized the opportunity to buy a few. By the time he was purchasing, we had already had his color in mind. My dress involved a bit more planning; I didn’t want a traditional gown, so I had done a lot of research on styles I liked and ended up settling on a line of bridesmaid’s dresses that In White carried. I was able to try a few on and with some courage picked the one I liked best, even though it was short! I have to admit, I did have fun trying on some more traditional gowns, but as soon as I started trying on the Alfred Sung dresses, I knew that was what I was going for. Out of the many skilled photographers in the area, how did you choose one?

We were looking for photographers who were offering an hourly rate. With our wedding, we did a simple evening gathering with a brief ceremony and everything happening in one place. We knew we didn’t need a full eight-hour or more package, so my searching led us to several photographers. Of course, Melissa McClain Photography’s portfolio spoke for itself. They were incredibly easy to work with, and our photographers, Christin and Whitney, were fabulous! How did you incorporate the tastes and personalities of both the bride and the groom into the wedding?

For the groom, I’d have to go back to brewing our own beer. He is really the mastermind behind the recipes and the labels, so he was able to be very creative with that. He also designed our wedding invitations! As for me (the bride), I enjoyed adding some color to our space. I fell in love with the teal doors of our location and added the floral detail to my dress to match.

What favors did you provide for guests? How did you decide on them?

This was one element that came together pretty quickly for us. We both wanted to cut down on some of the “clutter” of a wedding and decided it would be nice to give back in a small way on our day. We ordered trees for our guests and asked each of them to plant one as a symbol of our love growing over time. We liked the idea of making a small mark on the environment and have three seedlings of our own growing in Brooklyn. What did you find to be the biggest challenge/hurdle in planning a wedding?

Weddings are expensive and can get even more expensive really quickly. I think a challenge for us was sticking to our ideas of having a small, simple wedding and not letting a guest list or over-indulgence throw us too far off course. With all the details, it was nice to stay focused on our do-ityourself projects and the little things we could do to make our day special.

If there was one thing you could do differently, what would it be?

I think I would have planned to have our party last a little bit longer; we definitely didn’t plan enough time to just dance a few hours away. Any other tips for brides- and grooms-to-be?

Figure out what you as a couple want your day to be. The day is for you and no one else. The biggest compliment we got on our wedding was that it was very ‘us,’ and I can’t imagine a nicer sentiment for a wedding. Our greatest accomplishment would still have to be getting “officially married” at the clerk’s office in Manhattan about a month before our wedding. It took a lot of pressure off the day and allowed us to share a ceremony in exactly the way we wanted, while also being able to let loose and enjoy the moment.

Carley had always wanted to ride in a hot air balloon, so she couldn’t help but be a little suspicious that something big was afoot when she was presented with the opportunity to take one. Her soon-to-be fiancé, Kyle, had been stealthy with his planning, however, and he had Carley’s best friend arrange the excursion so the ride seemed like a lucky coincidence, not a carefully orchestrated event. Toward the end of the breathtaking ride through the sky, Kyle directed Carley’s attention to the road below, where their families - who had actually been chasing them since the balloon took off - were holding a giant banner that read, “Carley, will you marry me?” Kyle got down on one knee and proposed as Carley’s best friend and her husband snapped pictures next to them in the hot air balloon’s basket. Down below, their families cheered when Kyle yelled down to them, “She said ‘Yes’!” “He knows me very well,” says Carley of her husband, whom she first met in a high school algebra class. “He created a magical experience that I will always remember, and one that our family and closest friends were also a part of.” Ten months later, the two pulled off another impressive feat of organization - their beautiful wedding. Carley took the time to tell us about their big day and the planning that went into it.

What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? What inspired you to start there?

The very first thing I did to start planning was begin the search for wedding venues. Of course, in order to actually pick a venue you need to provide the wedding date and approximate guest head count. We knew we wanted May and so we kept three weekends open for possible dates in case there was limited availability. Next, we made a very rough estimate for a guest head count. Most reception locations list the maximum occupancy on their website, which is helpful to rule out venues that would simply not work logistically. Kyle and I wanted to secure the reception venue and the caterer first, because we were anticipating them to be “big ticket items,” both in importance and in expense. We also figured caterers and reception venues would book fairly far in advance — and we were right! My reasoning behind deciding on the reception first was so that I could more clearly envision the day. I felt that deciding on the venue would help me decide on a theme and reception décor. When it came to the smaller decisions later on during planning, it was helpful to have the reception location solidified so that I could always mentally refer to the layout, design, and aesthetics of the space.

How did you choose a style for your wedding? What unique touches did you add to your wedding?

Choosing a style was really difficult for me. Lots of wedding magazines encouraged me to “pick a theme,” because without a clear theme or vision my wedding would be lost and without any hope for redemption — at least that’s how I felt. I struggled because I didn’t fit any one type of style: was I romantic? classic? rustic? bohemian? natural? It was pretty confusing. I felt the magazine styles didn’t really reflect me, so I started with what I knew: I knew I wanted the wedding to reflect the season (spring); I knew I wanted a mostly monochromatic color scheme of black, gray, and white; and I knew I wanted an elegant but still comfortable setting. It was also important to me that the style of the wedding represented Kyle and me as a couple. Kyle and I both felt the wedding should have a formal undertone, and that was a key understanding in helping to decide the style. Developing the style for our wedding became easier when I decided on unique aspects for the day that I couldn’t live without. For starters, Kyle and I and our families absolutely love coffee. We had an “open coffee bar” with “all-you-can-drink” coffee at the reception, and the coffee was a signature blend Kyle and I created ourselves. Additionally, I have always loved the look of toile fabric, so I decided to use the fabric as table runners and also to wrap the bouquets. In addition to the grayscale color scheme and toile, I also included silhouettes and several monogram pieces. How did you select the bride’s dress? Did you know what you wanted in advance or base your decision on what you saw while shopping?

I have never been good at making decisions. I thought “saying yes to the dress” would be impossible for me because I tend to overanalyze everything and take a long time to make decisions, but my wedding dress shopping experience was not at all how I imagined. I only had to try on four dresses. My mom, sister, future mother-in-law, future sister-in-law, and I were on our way back from a bridal show in Lancaster, and we spontaneously decided to stop in at Alfred Angelo to see what they had. My sister (and maid of honor) was moving to Virginia the following weekend, and I wanted her to be with me when I tried on at least some dresses so we could share the experience. I was in the mood for having fun and for, basically, playing dress-up. Being in that fun mood prevented my over-analytical self to take things too seriously, and I had a chance to enjoy myself. As a result? I fell in love with a dress and didn’t have time to overthink my selection. Honestly, I think the spontaneous decision was the best thing I could have ever done. I had a phenomenal bridal consultant who understood my girlhood dream for my wedding dress, and I am extremely grateful for her. As the consultant was lacing up the corset back to the fourth dress, I remember saying, “I think I’m going to like this one.” I cried, my mom cried, everyone cried. It was a match made in heaven: the perfect combination of form fitting and princess pouf. It was simple and elegant and everything I ever imagined. Out of the many skilled photographers in the area, how did you choose?

Before I knew the wedding date, reception venue, or my dress, I knew that I wanted to use Brooke Courtney Photography for my wedding photos. I had followed their blog and loved the style and approach of the photos, mainly that they were more candid and more focused on detail as opposed to fixed poses. I can honestly say it was the best decision I made!

What favors did you provide for your guests? How did you decide on them?

Kyle and I and both of our families love to drink coffee, so we figured that having an “all-you-can-drink”/“open bar” coffee bar would be a big hit. We created our own signature brew to be served all night long. I created custom coffee cup sleeves with our monogram and wedding date for the guests to carry on their coffee cups during the reception. The favors were small bags of ground coffee, which was the same signature blend served during the reception. We wanted to provide our guests with something they would use and enjoy, and since most of them drink coffee, we thought it would be a perfect favor. Any other tips for brides- and grooms-to-be?

Wedding Wednesdays! This practice was helpful during the months leading up to the wedding. Having one day set aside for wedding-only tasks helped me create a to-do list and prioritize tasks that I needed to accomplish, and it helped me stay motivated and be productive because I had one day set aside in the week to focus solely on the wedding. My mom, sister, and I came to love (and sometimes dread!) Wedding Wednesdays. I found it was a great way to delegate specific time to focus on wedding tasks, and, likewise, specific time during the rest of the week to not focus on wedding tasks. Wedding Wednesdays are also helpful because many wedding vendors are busy with weddings during the weekend, so meeting during the week is less chaotic. Additionally, my advice for brides is to pick two or three things that you won’t compromise on. The odds are you will have to make some concessions and compromises throughout wedding planning, due to time, budget, feasibility, etc. But picking two or three aspects of the wedding that are most important to you will help keep other parts of wedding planning in perspective. When you look back at those two or three important things that worked out perfectly and just how you imagined, it will help make any other mishaps look even more insignificant. For grooms, I recommend finding your niche. My husband enjoys working with finances and working with his hands, so he was a great help in keeping me on track with the budget and also with some of my DIY projects (mainly the ones that involved saws and other power tools).

Jessica and Christopher are a match made in social media heaven. The two shared a substantial number of “mutual friends” on Facebook and recognized each other from going out and about in Lancaster. Chris eventually sent Jessica a message through Facebook, and she and her friends proceeded to play digital detective and investigate his page. Chris’ profile passed the test - “I realized he seemed like a good guy!” Jessica explains. The rest was history - Facebook messages led to text messages, which eventually led to a first date. After being engaged for two years, Chris and Jessica celebrated their wedding day with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony and elegant reception in a beautifully decorated tent. Jessica answered our questions about her wedding planning process.

What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? What inspired you to start there?

The Wedding Planner

For me, first and foremost was getting the venue booked, followed by the florist and the DJ. You can’t really choose anything else until you choose your venue. I have always loved Regents’ Glen; every picture I had ever seen of it was beautiful. The best part is that it’s almost a secret place; none of our friends or family members had ever attended a wedding there, so it was something different. When we went to tour the venue, it was love at first sight! The gardens are picturesque with two ponds with fountains to top it off. The flag stone patio for cocktail hour was expansive and surrounded by additional gardens, which gave the guests time to take a private moment together and enjoy a walk and the view. The reception was on top of the golf course in a massive white tent that had plenty of space for a large wedding and a blank canvas for me to make my dream day a reality. Next on my list was my florist and décor design. I knew right away that I wanted to work with Stacia from Petals With Style; she is truly a master of her craft and such a joy to work with! I knew exactly what I wanted, and she made it happen. I am also a firm believer that a DJ can make or break your wedding. I wanted a DJ that would have my guests on the dance floor all night; DJ Freez and his crew are the best in the business, so you need to book them way in advance. How did you choose a style for your wedding? What unique touches did you add to your wedding?

I wanted something soft and romantic but trendy and modern at the same time. I chose blush, gold, and cream as my color palette because it had the soft and romantic touch I was looking for but also left a lot of options open for décor and design. The color palette was carried through the entire reception - from the linens to the center pieces to the invitations. I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out. A unique touch I added was some really cool linens called confetti. They were a champagne/gold color with a raised fabric that you could literally run your fingers through. They really helped tie in the modern feel. How did you select the bride’s dress and the outfits of the members of the wedding party? Did you know what you wanted in advance or base your decision on what you saw while shopping?

I owe my dress selection to my matron of honor and best friend, Ciara Young. The first time we went to look for dresses, Ciara was eight months pregnant with her second daughter. Being the wonderful friend that she is, she dragged herself along to watch me try on dresses. When we got to Renaissance, there was a beautiful dress on display; I initially walked right by it because it was nothing like I had in mind. Ciara said to me, “I think you should try this on,” pointing at the dress. I said, “No, it’s not for me.” She responded, “Look, I am eight months pregnant; I feel huge, my feet hurt, and I’m tired, but I’m here and you will try this dress on for me.” And guess what: I loved it! The bridesmaids’ dresses also came from Renaissance. My bridesmaids have different body types, so finding a dress to flatter everyone was a little daunting. We decided on a floor-length blush chiffon dress with a sweetheart neckline. The girls all looked beautiful, and the dresses were a hit with everyone. Out of the many skilled photographers in the area, how did you choose?

I had looked over Renee’s pictures several times prior to contacting her, and every time I looked at them, I liked them more and more. She has a flare that sets her apart, and we hit it off when we met. She was familiar with my other vendors, and she was so easy to talk to. The day of the wedding she had a game plan but didn’t make us feel stressed out or rushed. She also has a great sense of humor and made the day fun for us. How did you incorporate the tastes and personalities of both the bride and the groom into the wedding?

Chris and I had very different tastes and styles when it came to the wedding, so that was a challenge. I am more traditional and structured, while he is more “new age” and go-with-the-flow. We just had to learn to compromise on a lot of things. The overall style of the wedding was traditional, from the invitations to the general outline for the big day. We knew we were having a traditional served meal at the wedding, so we did the opposite for the rehearsal. We booked John Wright for our rehearsal dinner and tried out their artisan brick oven pizzas, which were phenomenal. We had strolling appetizers, salads, and pizza with an open bar. It was nice to give everyone a break and the chance to just kick back and mingle.

What favors did you provide for your guests? How did you decide on them?

We provided bottles of wine from Moon Dancer Winery in Wrightsville. We had a custom label printed on the bottle; it was the same focal design we used for our invitations. My bridal shower was held there, and I thought it was a really cute idea to incorporate that into the wedding. What did you find to be the biggest challenge in planning a wedding?

The very end was the most challenging for me. The beginning stages of planning are easy: pick your vendors, get them booked, done! The end is when all the little details creep up on you: table arrangements, place cards, playlists, favors, etc. There is a lot you can’t do until right before the wedding day, so it hits you all at once. If there was one thing you could do differently, what would it be?

Always have a backup plan. Our officiant had a baby two days before our wedding, so he was able to preside over the ceremony but wasn’t able to stay for dinner and to give the blessing, which we were not prepared for. Any other tips for brides- and grooms-to-be?

Have the dreaded budget talk early on and with everyone. This includes your entire wedding party. Some people may not have been in a wedding before - or even attended a wedding to the scale of yours - so they may not know what is expected of them and the cost that can go with it. It’s important to let your wedding party know in the beginning what your plans are. If you want to have a bridal shower at a venue, plan to go away overnight for your bachelorette party, want your attendants to have their hair and makeup done, etc., then let them know as soon as possible so no one realizes at the last moment that they can’t participate because they weren’t prepared. No one likes to talk about money, but it’s better to get it out of the way early.

Kevin’s innovative proposal to his future bride, Ruth, whom he had first met at the graduation party of a mutual friend, involved hiding clues for her to find at various meaningful locations all across the city of Philadelphia. At each location, she found instructions on where to go next. After stops at the restaurant where they first met, the pier where Kevin asked her out, and other special locations, Ruth was eventually led to the final stop on this romantic scavenger hunt - the Ben Franklin Bridge Walkway, where Kevin was waiting to propose. After a one-and-a-half-year engagement, the two celebrated their marriage with an elegant ceremony and a reception that incorporated some traditions from Ruth’s Indian heritage. They gave us a look into their big day and the process of planning their wedding.

What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? What inspired you to start there?

The first thing we did was look for a venue. We potentially needed a long lead-time to get the venue we wanted for the time of year we wanted, so we started early. We wanted the perfect place; we knew the venue would set the tone for the entire wedding.

How did you choose a style for your wedding? What unique touches did you add to your wedding?

We wanted a contemporary Western wedding but with a few unique touches to incorporate the traditions of Ruth’s family, who are originally from Tamil Nadu, India. For example, Ruth wore a traditional Western dress for the ceremony but changed into a Lehenga Choli for the reception. Also, the main courses for dinner were traditional American dishes, but we included Indian appetizers, such as samosas and pakoras.

How did you select the bride’s dress, the groom’s attire and the outfits of the members of the wedding party? Did you know what you wanted in advance or base your decision on what you saw while shopping?

Ruth always wanted an A-line dress with lace and cap sleeves. For the bridesmaids, Ruth knew what color she wanted the dresses to be and found a style that complemented hers. We wanted the groomsmen’s outfits to have a more modern, slimfitting cut, and Kevin was happy to pick out groomsmen’s pants and vests from Express, one of his favorite clothing stores. We were also able to cut down on costs, since buying the pants and vests at Express cost less than a rental, and the groomsmen were able to keep their outfits. Out of the many skilled photographers in the area, how did you choose?

We knew having a great photographer was extremely important to us, and we budgeted to spend more on this aspect of our wedding than others. We wanted nothing but the best. After doing a search online, it was an easy decision for us to choose Morby Photography. His photography is absolutely stunning, and his artistic abilities really stood out. How did you incorporate the tastes and personalities of both the bride and the groom into the wedding?

We were on the same page as far as what the wedding would look like, because our goal was for the wedding to be a blessing to those involved and those attending. What favors did you provide for your guests and how did you decide on them?

We provided heart-shaped bottle stoppers for the guests. We decided on them because we wanted a gift guests could use.

What did you find to be the biggest challenge/hurdle in planning a wedding?

Our biggest hurdle was our busy schedules. We were both working full time, and Kevin was also doing graduate school part time. Luckily, we were in agreement with most of the decisions that needed to be made. If there was one thing you could do differently, what would it be?

We would keep everything the same, except we would have hired a wedding planner to set it all up for us! Any other tips for brides- and grooms-to-be?

Book things early and follow a to-do list. This will reduce potential hassles and keep things moving. Where did you go on your honeymoon? Why did you select this location?

We went to Ambergris Caye, Belize. We wanted to go somewhere that both of us had not been to before. We were not disappointed; we enjoyed staying at a fabulous resort, Las Terrazas, and were able to relax and explore the diverse marine life in the coral reef around Ambergris Caye.

After attending high school together at York Suburban High School and dating for more than six years, Samantha and John were engaged on Christmas Day in 2012. John popped the question on Christmas morning, instructing Samantha to face the Christmas tree and close her eyes while he went out to the car to get her “big” present. When she turned back around and opened her eyes, John was on one knee in front of her and asked her to marry him. “Of course I said yes,” she recalls. About 17 months later, the couple tied the knot during a picturesque outdoor ceremony, and friends and family members gathered to enjoy a reception that absolutely lived up to the country chic celebration Samantha had envisioned. Samantha shared insights into her planning process with us.

What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? What inspired you to start there?

The first thing I did was select our venue. I knew how fast places booked up for weddings, so I knew that we needed to select that first. How did you choose a style for your wedding? What unique touches did you add to your wedding?

I always had an idea of how I wanted my wedding to look and the decorations that I would be using. I wanted a country, chic, rustic look, and our venue provided the perfect place for that specific style. We used a lot of chalkboards, burlap, handmade decorations, flowers, and small details that pulled our theme together nicely.

How did you select the bride’s dress, the groom’s attire, and the outfits of the members of the wedding party? Did you know what you wanted in advance or base your decision on what you saw while shopping?

For my dress, I actually wanted nothing like it. I originally wanted a more lace/country look, but when I went to Renaissance and tried on styles that weren’t my first choice, I fell in love with my gown. I knew I wanted my bridal party to be in blue because it is my favorite color and it’s a perfect spring color. The guys took some research and debating until we decided to go with the gray. Out of the many skilled photographers in the area, how did you choose one?

Krista at Loving Memories is someone I have known since I was little. She does amazing work, and the choice for us was an easy one. We really liked her style and technique. What favors did you provide for guests and how did you decide on them?

Our favors were mini bags that said, “Thanks for sharing our special day. Love, John and Samantha.” The guests filled them up with candy from the candy bar. The candy bar was color coded to match our colors of blue, pink, and purple. The candy bar was also something that I always wanted, and I have such a sweet tooth, so it was perfect! What did you find to be the biggest challenge/hurdle in planning a wedding?

The biggest challenge was finding the time to get everything done. We had so many great ideas, and I tried really hard to make sure all those ideas were incorporated into the wedding, but some didn’t happen because of time. If there was one thing you could do differently, what would it be?

Not wait so long to work on the smaller details, as those seemed to be the things that took the longest. Any other tips for brides- and grooms-to-be?

Enjoy the time planning your wedding; it will be there before you know it. Try not to let the stress of planning it ruin all the fun it should be.

How To Prevent Basic Wedding Photo Blunders By Carley Durante Dealing with unmet expectations post-wedding is probably one of the most difficult aspects of wedding planning – they don’t mention handling disappointment on those wedding planning sites. I worked tirelessly during my engagement to ensure nothing less than perfection on my wedding day; it was like a full-time job. But let’s face it, nothing is ever perfect, and something will inevitably go wrong on your wedding day. And by “wrong” I mean “wrong according to you.” Every bride has an area of wedding planning that is extra special to her, and she is more prone to breakout “Bridezilla” when discussing this topic. (I like to picture it like Bruce

Banner transforming into the Hulk – ripped clothes, engorged veins, that sort of thing.) For some brides, it’s the food; others, the dress or flowers. Even the invitation suite can be a touchy subject. I find that in today’s digitally driven culture, more so than ever one’s wedding photos are the key issue that brides everywhere stress over and want to be absolutely perfect. (Let’s face it – Pinterest? Not always reality.) However, what I learned through my recent wedding planning and wedding day experiences is that there are some things that even an incredible photographer can’t prevent, plan for, or Photoshop later. And, frankly, there are some things photographers aren’t responsible for. So in order to prevent post-wedding

searching hair and makeup before deciding on their bridal style. Some brides pay big bucks for their wedding hairdo (not to mention the prewedding bridal hair trial). Your bridal portraits are important! The few photos of just you, your dress, your veil, and your bouquet will be the only portraits of just you as the bride (and princess of the day). On my wedding day, the bridal portraits were taken last after the group bridal party shots. My photographer dismissed the bridal party back to the limo while he focused on just me. I loved everything about my bridal look and was anxious to see my photos. Once I received my bridal portraits, I was horrified at the full-body shots of my dress because it turns out that my bustle was sticking out at a literal 90-degree angle, creating a perfectly straight shelf of tulle (on the bottom half of my dress). It looked like I had a cardboard box under my dress. Even though I was mortified, I could not blame my photographer for this wardrobe malfunction. Brides, your photographer is not liable for wardrobe malfunctions. Your photographer may not know what your definition of the “perfect” look is. And during my bridal portraits, my most trusted entourage of ladies were waiting in the limo. First lesson: it is a good idea to have a person you trust provide a second look during your bridal portraits. Ask your maid of honor to stay behind and act as a second pair of eyes. Have someone you can relay on there to keep an eye out for wardrobe malfunctions.

talgic setting to put on my dress and take pictures, so my parents’ house, not a bridal suite, was the backdrop for my “getting ready” photos. Even though I knew I would be getting dressed at my parents’ house, I didn’t really consider that the house itself would need to be in good condition since it was also being photographed. My frenzied

Looking at the photographs, I realized that I should have vacuumed my carpet, because when the photographer shot me putting on my shoes, the camera also saw the dust, the string, and the hair on my dirty carpet – eew! My parents’ house has a beautiful staircase, so I wanted to walk down the stairs like Belle in “Beauty and the Beast,” showing off my beautiful dress to my bridesmaids waiting below. The shots turned out great, and the looks on my girls’ faces were priceless. However, below the steps is the living room ... with laundry baskets on the couches, dirty glasses on the coffee table, and dog toys strewn across the floor. These little things I didn’t think about putting away distracted from the beautiful moment captured in the photograph. Regardless of where you get ready, make sure the room is in top condition. Delegate the necessary actions to straighten up the room to either your coordinator or maid of honor. Ask your attendants to neatly store shoes, day-of bags, cosmetics, etc., so they aren’t all over the floor, bed, or chairs in your bridal suite, hotel room, or bedroom. Put away empty coffee cups and dirty plates. In doing so, you won’t sacrifice a beautifully captured moment to the messy backdrop.

rapher is all about matching styles your personal style, but also the style, theme, and feel of your wedding day. For example, if you have an outdoor summer wedding with a lot of open spaces, flora, and fauna, then a photographer with a clean, natural light focus would be fitting. If you plan an evening wedding in a glamorous ballroom, a photographer with a bit more of a dramatic style and a strong knowledge of Photoshop would be best suited. When searching for my wedding photographer, I researched blog photos and individual engagement and wedding shoot portfolios. I selected my photographer because I could tell from his shots that his

In his portfolios, he captured everything I would want to have photographed, so I (mistakenly) believed he would capture all of the images I wanted captured at my wedding and I neglected to give him a shot list – even when asked! The bottom line is that even if the photographer you choose shows evidence of taking all the right photos during other weddings, you must provide him or her with a shot list. Your photographer is not a mind reader. Don’t assume he or she knows what you’re thinking, knows which décor is most important to you, and knows that you want every shot he or she has ever posted on his or her portfolio or blog. Give your photographer a shot list ahead of time with clear specifications, and you can even supplement it with examples of his or her previous work!

mind that certain shots have a time limit, and it is crucial to communicate this to your photographer (again, this reiterates the importance of the shot list). An example of a disappearing shot would be a photo of the arrangement of the escort cards. Two of my bridesmaids spent an hour perfectly arranging my escort cards in front of a vintage typewriter on the welcome table. There were over 100 cards, and they aligned them in perfect columns and rows. It looked spectacularly clean and orderly. However, both my photographer and the second shooter were busy taking pictures of the bridal party while guests trickled in to the reception and snatched up their escort cards. No one was at the reception to capture the escort cards before they were disturbed. To prevent this from happening, provide your photographer(s) with a shot list so he or she knows where to be and when. Many wedding photography packages have two shooters to help with these types of situations, but be sure to make a point of telling your photographer about the shots that will expire once guests arrive. Here are some examples of disappearing shots: escort cards, unity table, favors (if not placed at the guests’ seats directly), place setting (without food), empty reception venue, etc.

Following these tips will help to prevent post-wedding photo regrets, but another important tip in preventing Hulk-like Bridezilla explosions is to learn to let it go (insert amazing vocals by Queen Elsa here). If you don’t get the escort card photo or a shot of the unity candle before it has become a pile of drippy wax, everything will be okay. A good photographer catches natural light, captures intimate moments, and controls your unruly uncles during the group family shots (our photographer did all our family shots in under 20 minutes!). Remember that the most important photos – the candid shot of your groom kissing your cheek, your parents dancing to their wedding song, the flower girl sneaking a kiss from the ring bearer – are what truly represent the essence of your day: you and your forever love, family and friends celebrating, and the beginning a new life together. And while this may be a hard pill to swallow after all the hours spent creating perfect Pinterest crafts, trust me: the people, not the props, will mean the most to you.

So often we hear that the wedding day is “all about the bride.” Or that the couple should make sure that they enjoy “their” day. However, many couples are deciding to make their wedding days about more than just themselves. Options abound for ways to use your wedding as an avenue to give back to the larger community.

Requesting Donations in Lieu of Gifts When Ron and Karen Peters of Paradise, Pa., tied the knot on May 3, 2014, the 400 guests at their outdoor wedding on a farmette near Strasburg, Pa., were treated to a unique celebration. “We both had it on our hearts to use our wedding as an opportunity to support other families as we began ours,” explained Karen, who teaches kindergarten, while her husband owns an excavating business. "Bringing two households together during this phase of our lives meant we already had the ‘usual’ wedding registry items. Wanting our celebration to celebrate the One who brought us together, we asked our guests to consider blessing others,” Karen continued. Ron and Karen first met at The Power Youth Center in Strasburg, where Ron is the director and Karen is a regular volunteer. Their shared passion for working with youths led them to use their wedding celebration to raise funds and collect items in support of COBYS Family Services, an organization that was close to both their hearts due to its outreach to troubled youths. In their wedding invitations, Ron and Karen included a note that said, “The couple-to-be asks your ‘present’ on this special day be wrapped with your smile, full of your friendship, and most of all bursting with praise and prayers. Couples can use their weddings as an opportunity to collect pet care items for animal rescue organizations, nonperishable food items for food banks, personal care items for homeless shelters, or school supplies for children in need. If couples simply cannot allow their guests to leave the reception empty-handed, brides and grooms can make a small contribution to the betterment of the environment by giving their guests tree seedlings to plant or packets of wildflowers to grow. (Or, couples can save their guests from having to get out their gardening gloves by arranging to have trees planted in the name of each guest through a nonprofit organization, such as the National Arbor Day Foundation.) In addition to providing donations in lieu of favors, couples may also wish to consider making donations instead of giving presents to their wedding attendants and family members.

Reusing & Recycling It’s important to keep in mind that a lot of the elements that made your wedding beautiful and special will remain behind after guests leave. There will likely be some leftover food, as well as decorative elements that are left behind. With a little ingenuity, couples can figure out ways to donate or reuse many of these items. Food: Check with local food banks, food rescue organizations, shelters, and other groups to see if they would be willing to accept donations of leftover food. Some organizations might even be willing to send someone to pick up the leftovers from the reception site. If you can’t find a nonprofit organization that can accept your leftovers, you may still be able to help brighten someone’s day. Ask family members or friends if they can take the food to their church or office. After all, who doesn’t love it when a co-worker shows up with some free cake? Flowers: Consider donating your attendants’ bouquets and floral

centerpieces to local hospitals or retirement communities. After serving their purpose of beautifying your big day, your gorgeous floral arrangements may be able to cheer up individuals who are ill, lonely, or just in need of a little dose of beauty. Other Decorations: Other elements of your decor may also lend themselves to post-wedding donations. For example, if you employ brightly colored children’s books to convey your storybook wedding theme or use vintage classic novels to add to the elegance to your reception’s decor, consider donating the books to a local school or library after the wedding. There are also many organizations that collect book donations to send to children throughout the world, as well as service personnel serving overseas. Even strictly decorative items might be of use to someone else. A retirement home with a stretched decoration budget might welcome some lightly used tablecloths or garlands that can liven up parties or events. Plus, many items can be repurposed if people are crafty enough. Local preschools might love a box of colorful leftover paper

napkins that children can use for crafts. And, of course, your opportunities to give back don’t have to end with your wedding day. Some couples may be interested in completing a service trip instead of their honeymoon. Couples who are not ready to commit to taking an entire servicebased trip may be able to spend a day or two volunteering, wherever their honeymoon destination. Opportunities to use your wedding festivities to give back to the community are bountiful, and there are innumerable worthy organizations that would be glad to accept gifts of money, as well as donated items and time. Preparation and planning can help keep outdoor weddings moving along. Weather can be unpredictable and unforgiving at times, so it is always best to account for various scenarios. The following are some tips to consider:

Be mindful of hot weather Many outdoor weddings occur when temperatures are at their warmest. As anyone who has had to

sit outdoors in the blazing sun for an extended period of time can attest, it can grow quite uncomfortable, especially when everyone is dressed to the nines. Talk with people who have used the vendor’s services in the past and ask the questions that are most important to your decisionmaking process. Unbiased feedback may also be available through online review sites, but direct contact with references will allow couples to address specific concerns. If a vendor fails to provide references, this should raise suspicions about the person or business's reliability. • Avoid making demands. Much like couples do not want to receive "take it or leave it" offers, vendors do not want to be issued commands. The right tone can go a long way with wedding vendors, who are typically more willing to work with couples who treat them nicely. While vendors often like it when couples know what they want, couples are not doing themselves any favors when they express desires as demands. • Don't be afraid to ask for more. Making demands and asking for more are not the same thing. When negotiating, there is no harm in asking for additional services or time. For example, the worst a disc jockey can do when asked to play an extra hour at no additional charge is deny the request. Reception venues often have the most wiggle room, so do not be afraid to ask for free coffee with dessert or valet parking.

Vendors are often open to suggestions and willing to honor requests, but it is not their responsibility to offer extras up front. • Deposits should be a fraction of the total price. Avoid wedding vendors who insist on hefty deposits. A deposit is a goodfaith agreement to hold the date of the wedding, and it should be a small percentage of the overall cost of the services. • Do not pay balances too far in advance. Many wedding vendors require the balance be paid on the day of the wedding or shortly before. Good vendors realize couples will not want to pay the tally until they have received the products or services they signed up for. A photographer may ask for the final payment when albums are delivered. The exception may be a caterer or reception site that needs the funds to order food and beverages a few weeks in advance. Paying off a vendor too early means you run the risk of a paid vendor not coming through on the big day. • Make sure all contracts are itemized and read them thoroughly before signing. Every agreement should be in writing. Couples will have a better chance of fighting for a refund or restitution as needed when services and obligations are detailed in writing. In addition, the negotiation process can be tedious, and contracts should spell out in detail just what was negotiated and how much each item costs.
