Diakon Reports York Aglow To Welcome Local Benefit Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries and Diakon Child, Family and Community Ministries had a more than $20 million community benefit last year. The nonprofit organization, which locally operates Diakon Youth Services and Diakon Adoption and Foster Care, with an office in York, recently released its 2017 community benefit report detailing an overall impact of $20.071 million. The figure represents charitable care provided within Diakon’s senior living communities and its range of child and family services, as well as free public educational sessions, the provision of free meeting space for community groups, service as a clinical training site, and veterans’ assistancerelated education. Regional community benefit amounted to nearly $500,000. Community benefit refers to the way Diakon makes a difference beyond direct service and speaks to Diakon’s particular concern for those with lower incomes or other limited resources. Quantification of community benefit was done in accordance with national guidelines developed by the Catholic Health Association of the United States, particularly in terms of social accountability for Continuing Care Retirement Communities. A GROUP Workcamp with 188 students from throughout the country - including approximately 25 from York Youth Revolution in Hallam - served area residents in need by providing home repairs from June 18 to 22. The projects were done at 24 homes of individuals who had applied for the assistance and were selected from more than 100 applicants. of the week’s projects. “There’s been a lot of great feedback. (The residents) love the kids,” Bachman shared. The feeling was mutual, because Nolt said that many of the students visiting from other parts of the country commented that York was one of the friendliest communities they had served in. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, the teenagers worked in small groups of five with one adult crew leader. Other construction professionals from the local region volunteered to provide guidance for work as well. Bachman noted that GROUP

Hundreds of youths from various parts of the country visited eastern York County from June 18 to 22 to serve local residents through a GROUP Workcamp. Colorado-based GROUP Mission Trips facilitates the workcamps so that volunteers can provide home repairs to individuals and families in need. Students in York Youth Revolution, the community youth group at Faith United Methodist Church in Hallam, have been traveling to other states for years to volunteer with GROUP Workcamps, but this year youth leader Joe Bachman’s dream of hosting a site in eastern York finally came true. Several area churches and community groups formed the Eastern York Workcamp Initiative Community Team to sponsor the effort, raising funds to cover the costs of materials and coordinating area volunteers for various tasks such as providing snacks for the work crews. A total of 188 teenagers from Wisconsin, Ohio, Maine, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, including approximately 25 from the York Youth Revolution, worked together in small groups at 24 homes. Seth Nolt, a youth leader with York Youth Revolution, said that there were more than 100 applications from area residents seeking free assistance with home repair projects, and the community team narrowed it down to 24. “That shows how much need there is,” Nolt remarked. Painting interiors and exteriors, repairing porches, adding wheelchair ramps, and installing trailer skirting made up the bulk

“We Got Your Pak” will take place at Windsor Assembly of God, 21 N. Penn St., Windsor, on Thursday, Aug. 9, at 6:30 p.m. During the event, book bags with school supplies will be distributed to students in the Windsor and Red Lion Area. Children entering kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible to receive
a backpack from the church. Students must preregister by calling 717-244-6236. Students will need to check in at the welcome tables in order to receive a confirmation slip to pick up backpacks. Supplies are limited on a first-come, first-served basis. Approximately 40 backpacks are still available.
Workcamp facilitators divided the crews according to skill level so that there was a blending of individuals with a high level of skills and those with little or no experience. For 16-year-old Rachel Barrett of Celina, Ohio, the week in York County marked her third trip with GROUP Workcamps, following stints in Racine, Wis., and Wilmington, N.C. Her crew rebuilt a trailer porch. “It just feels good to help people. She’s not physically able to do it herself,” said Rachel, explaining that the homeowner has been living alone since her husband died from cancer. In addition to splitting the groups up according to skill level, the students are also placed with individuals from other youth groups instead of their own. “Sometimes it takes a while for the groups to bond, but our group bonded the second we met,” Rachel said. “I’m going to
be talking to these people forever, even though we all live nine hours away.” After wrapping up at the work sites each day, the teenagers headed back to Eastern York Middle School, where they were housed for the week. Each evening included a meal and a program with worship music and a brief teaching time, followed by free time. “We played lots of nine square,” mentioned Rachel. “It’s sort of a cross between four square and volleyball.” “I just love the connections you make with the residents and your team,” said Joy Landolfi, who worked at the home of a woman living with a daughter and two grandsons. Joy’s crew painted the porch, replaced the trailer skirting, and built a new door for a shed. “They’d tell us every day how blessed they were to have us there,” Joy shared.
