Conestoga Elementary School students learn value of giving
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Conestoga Elementary School students are learning the value of getting nothing tangible in exchange for their hard work.
This school year, counselor Meridith Eckroat started the Conestoga GIVES program.
GIVES is an acronym for Giving Is Valued, Encouraged, and Supportive.
“It was a brainchild of mine,” Eckroat said. “I was a fifth-grade teacher here for 10 years. Through that, I know in the wintertime a lot of kids would not want to go outside. I thought, ‘What’s something we can do that would give them an alternate activity on some days, but also at the same time, would be them doing something for someone else?’ It’s not, ‘I’m going to come down here
and make something for myself to take home.’ It’s twofold. Let’s teach students to give of their time, and they’re not going to get something in return.”
Eckroat approached principal Scott Keddie, who was supportive of the idea. Then Eckroat went to the school’s PTO and the group offered its assistance.
Conestoga Elementary School PTO president Christine Snyder suggested Eckroat look into Art of Recycle, located in Ephrata. Teachers or others affiliated with a school can get supplies from Art of Recycle for free. Otterbein United Methodist Church has donated all the copy paper the school needs.

Conestoga GIVES began in December when students made more than 200 holiday cards for recipients of Meals on Wheels. “We brainstormed ideas,” said Eckroat. “Most had no idea there was an organization called Meals on Wheels or know what they do. It was an opportunity to teach them about what the organization can do for our older population.”
A representative of Meals on Wheels told Eckroat, “It has been so long since somebody has made cards for us.”

Autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how some people conduct themselves, gain knowledge, speak and listen and relate to others. It’s a disorder that we continue to learn about and one that might be more prevalent than first realized.
NeurAbilities Healthcare of Lancaster approaches autism from both clinical and
behavioral perspectives. Two of the organization’s main goals are to enhance the lives of people and families affected by the disorder and to integrate those individuals into society.
“People are often coming to us because they are struggling to support their family members,” said Adriana Neumann, NeurAbilities’ senior director for applied behavior analysis clinical services. “There’s something they’re struggling to manage. They want their child to learn, to

The seeds for the annual Lancaster County Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) event were planted in 2013 when pediatrician Dr. Lora Mangus Wenger and her family visited Haiti with members of Willow Street Mennonite Church as part of a Mission of Hope mission trip.
“At that time, (Mission of Hope) was feeding 50,000 children a day by distributing meals to their school, other schools,

“She was so excited to get them,” Eckroat said. “It’s an opportunity for the kids to realize it’s easy to do something nice for somebody else and not getting anything in return except for feeling good about yourself.”

Mangus Wenger had never heard of FMSC before that and decided to do some research after returning home. She discovered there were no MobilePack events taking place in Pennsylvania, so she and her husband, Todd, and daughters, Anna and Naomi, participated in a MobilePack in New Jersey.
“I thought, ‘We can probably do this ourselves,’” she recalled. Willow Street Mennonite Church got involved and hosted the first Lancaster County MobilePack in 2014. That event attracted
50 volunteers and put together 100,000 meals.
This year will mark a milestone. Because two years were canceled because of COVID, the 10th Lancaster County FMSC MobilePack will take place Friday to Sunday, March 28 to 30, at Willow Street Mennonite Church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street.
To date, meals have gone to Somalia, Haiti, Belize, the Dominican Republic, Malawi, Uganda, Jamaica, Poland, Guyana, and Moldova. Over the prior nine events, more than 10,000 volunteers from the community have come together to send more than 2.3 million

meals to those most in need around the world, Mangus Wenger said.
This year, the plan is to have 2,000 volunteers work two-hour shifts to pack 400,000 meals in three days. There are no age limitations. For safety and efficiency, student-to-adult ratios are put in place, Mangus Wenger said. Sit-down jobs are available if needed.
Individuals who sign up for a packing shift are encouraged but not required to make a personal goal of contributing a minimum of $63. At the price of 29 cents a meal, this donation covers the cost of one box of packed meals (216 meals), which is the average amount a single volunteer packs in a two-hour period.
“This food is literally going to those most in need around the world. Some of the people receiving this food only have one good meal a day,” said Mangus Wenger, who is the Lancaster County FMSC MobilePack chairperson.
Donations may be submitted at www.fmsc.org. Registration is underway and can be completed on the website.
Packing times are March 28 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.; Saturday, March 29, from 9 to 11 a.m., noon to 2 p.m., 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., and 5 to 7 p.m.; and March 30 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Some shift times are more popular than others and fill quickly.
FMSC is also committed to helping people closer to home by

collecting food for the Lancaster County Food Hub. Volunteers are invited to bring a nonperishable food item that will be donated to the food hub in Lancaster city. Anyone from Lancaster County may receive food from this location.
Items requested include 1-lb. containers of peanut butter; canned meats such as chicken or tuna; 1-lb. bags of white or brown rice; canned fruit in juice or light syrup; pasta, preferably whole wheat; meal helpers; low-sugar breakfast cereal; and low-sodium soup.
Anyone who has never participated in an FMSC event will need to visit www.fmsc.org, set up a username and password to register as an individual or for a group, go to the upper right-hand corner, and click “Log in.” People can then create an account to set up a username and password.
After setting up an account, participants may type “FMSC.org login” into a browser and click on “Volunteer.” People may then reserve the number of spots they will need for their group. Groups may help during multiple shifts, but they should not reserve more spaces than they know they will fill.
“I’m very thankful that so many people are willing to get involved,” Mangus Wenger said. “It particularly makes me happy to see children involved, because I think it’s very important we help them understand the importance of having adequate food on a regular basis, and how in the United States, we’re very, very blessed. Unfortunately, a lot of children in the world don’t have adequate nutrition. We are able to help them. I am happy to see our community be so supportive.”
To celebrate the 10th event in Lancaster County, Daryl Fulp of Hope for Home Ministries in Guatemala will talk briefly before each packing session about the impact of the volunteers’ work.

make progress, to navigate the world. Every family is different. Every person is different. Our job is not to change individuals. Our job is to remove barriers and help them manage.”
Established in Lancaster in 2022, NeurAbilities Healthcare is a relative newcomer to the local autism treatment scene. NeurAbilities Healthcare, which is located at 1858 Charter Lane, Suite 201, Lancaster, serves its clients through a community-based approach and on a one-on-one basis.
“We want to provide services with excellence,” said Neumann. “Ultimately, we support largely the autism community, people with an ASD diagnosis. You have a lot of individuals who are experiencing different challenges. We like to focus on abilities. We’re supporting patients. We’re supporting learners. We try to capitalize on people’s strengths and focus on what they can do to overcome those challenges. We like to see every individual for who they are.”
The Lancaster office of NeurAbilities Healthcare is set up to be a colorful, warm, inviting space filled with toys and pictures that learners can relate to. More than 10 staff members operate the office, including three certified clinicians.
“In Lancaster, or anywhere you go, there are people who don’t know what autism is,” said Neumann. “The field itself is growing, and there’s always a need for autism services. As we’re working to grow the Lancaster clinic, we want to enhance community engagement. There will be a push in the community to know what autism is and what NeurAbilities does. Hopefully, we’ll be able to improve awareness around that.”
Currently, NeurAbilities Healthcare is serving about 15 local learners, mostly children under the age of 9 from Lancaster County. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in 36 kids in the United States has ASD.
“We provide community-based services,” said Neumann. “We look at what individuals need. We do services in our clinic, in homes and in schools. It’s anybody with challenges impacting their abilities to function. Those are the people who are coming to us for our services.”
Backed by a private equity firm, NeurAbilities Healthcare is a self-sufficient private practice. Some of the services provided by NeurAbilities Healthcare are covered by Medicaid or health insurance.
“We have individuals who come in who have certain skill deficits in communication, in patterns of behavior, in social interaction,” said Neumann. “We also support individuals who engage in challenging behaviors. When someone is engaging in a behavior, there’s a reason for that. We want to be able to teach a different
skill. We’re focused on anything that supports independence.”
“There are other agencies that provide similar community-based skills,” Neumann added. “Some agencies don’t have clinics - they go into schools and homes - and some only have clinics. But it seems to me that there’s always a need.”
NeurAbilities Healthcare operates a total of three diagnostic centers and 14 applied behavior analysis clinics in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
“We’ve got improved insight into what autism is, and we have more doctors who understand what it is,” said Neumann. “There are more diagnoses. The question we are asking is, ‘What is causing this?’There has been research into it, but there’s not a hard answer.”

Conestoga GIVES from
Ava Charles, who created a card for firefighters. “I like that you can give a card to someone, and it will make them happy.”
Classmate Isaiah Withiam said he wanted to make a card for police officers “because they protect us.”
February’s project is making bookmarks that will be donated to local libraries.
Eckroat goes into classrooms and explains the month’s theme and tells students they have the opportunity to sign up for the activity. Students can also elect to go outside and play during that period.
Eckroat, in her third year as counselor, notes approximately 170 students, about half of the school’s population in kindergarten through sixth grade, participated in the December activity.
She plans to continue the program next winter.
Keddie is proud of Conestoga GIVES. He said a community member read a story about the program on the school’s website and was impressed by what the students are doing.
“One of the things it does is it teaches students how to give back to the community in a small way, but that small ways matter,” Keddie said. “It helps them to show empathy and an understanding of others. Hopefully it starts a belief in philanthropy.”
