A total of 40 teams and more than 500 people participated in the American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay For Life of York event on June 15 to 16 at the York Expo Center. More than $175,000 was raised to support the organization’s mission of saving lives from cancer. Funds raised help the ACS provide free information and support for people facing the disease and fund cancer research to help protect future generations. According to event co-leader Kelly Smith, the event celebrated those who have survived cancer, remembered those who lost their battles, and took action in the fight against the disease. The following participants were recognized for their efforts: The Naturals, Top Fundraising Business Team; Friends, Top Fundraising Friends and Family Team; and Jessi Frantz, Top Fundraising Individual. Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Washington in 1985, the Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer. During Relay For Life events, members of each team take turns walking or running around a track. Teams participate in fundraising efforts in the months leading up to the event. Donations can still be made by visiting www.RelayForLife.org/PAYork.

Heritage Fiesta To Celebrate Culture The seventh annual Heritage Fiesta, a potluck picnic event, will be held on Saturday, July 21, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Pavilions C and D at Cousler Park, 1060 Church Road, York. Attendees are asked to bring a potluck dish to share. Grilled burgers and hot dogs, soda, condiments, ice, paper plates, and cups will be provided. Attendees may also bring their own lawn chairs or blankets for seating. The Heritage Fiesta is cosponsored by the Philippine American Heritage Council, New Americans by Choice, York County Action, and Conservative Christian Center. Programs will start at 12:30 p.m. Among the event’s components will be cultural exhibits and sponsors’ tables, disc jockey Blake Hoke, a salute to veterans, activities for people of all ages, and brief speaking slots for legislators and candidates for office, including Judith Higgins; Shanna L. Danielson, a representative of Stephen Snell; and keynote speaker state Sen. Mike Folmer. Additionally, a variety of cultural traditions will be represented by performances by musical and dance groups including Tiffany “Kama Nuru” Trueblood, Bongga Ka Day dance team of
Harrisburg, Halo-Halo Youth Dancers of Harrisburg, Spanglish Program Youth Culture and Arts, and the KalayaanUSA Cultural Ensemble. “Kalayaan” means “freedom” in Filipino. The group was founded in 2014 and is sponsored by the Philippine American Heritage Council. KalayaanUSA has been a featured guest performer at the International Culture and Festival Expo in York and is slated to perform at the Cultural Fest in Dauphin County on Friday, Aug. 3. To request a performance with advance notice of at least 30 days or to ask about training to perform with the group, readers may email chairman@kalayaanUSA.org or call 717-827-7330.
