“These six things the LORD hates . . .” Proverbs 6:16 “

T

he LORD hates . . .” This combination of words would surprise many. We are so used to hearing “the LORD loves”, that hearing the opposite may startle us. Sadly, there is such an emphasis made on God’s love that the impression is widespread that God is incapable of hatred. But the Bible speaks repeatedly of both. In Proverbs 6:16 we read, “These six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.” These are by no means the only things God hates. There are other sins, many of them, which are also listed throughout the Bible which are abominable to God. Psalm 5:5, 6: “The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity. You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.” When the love of God is taught today, the impression is given that God’s love means that God doesn’t take His authority over us seriously, that His commandments are really only suggestions, desires, wishes. There

is an ongoing retreat in many churches from teaching the wrath of God, which is an aspect of His righteousness. As a result, sin is considered to be trivial, not only by man (which is sinfully natural), but even by God. But God drowned the world, and He destroyed Sodom. But if God is indifferent to our sins, the crucifixion of Jesus Christ becomes unnecessary for the salvation of sinners, for there is nothing from which to be saved. No one spoke more about hell in the Bible than Jesus, who is described in Psalm 45:7 (and it is quoted again of Him in Hebrews 1:9) “You love righteousness and hate wickedness.” Christ hates wickedness, and He said that when He returns to judge the world, there will be many to whom He will say, “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” God’s love has sent a Savior into the world and whoever repents and believes in Him will be saved. But whoever turns away from Christ will find that God “hates all workers of iniquity.” “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16.

School joined in the program’s second year. The program is based at the Susquehanna Heritage Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. Lesson materials draw on all three of the Chesapeake Trail’s interpretive themes and address several state education standards. During a scavenger hunt at the Zimmerman Center and its waterfront pavilion, students learn about the travels of Captain John Smith and how he documented what he saw, as well as the history of the Susquehanna River. Students are led on a guided hike to Native Lands County Park, 1664 Long Level Road, Wrightsville, to see the site of a former Susquehannock Indian town and learn how colonization affected how and where they lived. Finally, students take part in a field stream study to learn how each person’s actions affect the health of rivers and streams and the Chesapeake Bay. As part of the experience, students complete a Chesapeake Trail Susquehanna River Edition of the NPS Junior Ranger Activity Book. At the end of the day, a National Park Ranger swears each student in and presents him or her with Junior Ranger badges. With the conclusion of the 2018 field trip season, the program’s 1,015th student took the Junior Ranger pledge. When reflecting on the field trip, one student said, “I just think that the whole field trip was a really good learning experience for my classmates and me. I also think the other people should come to (the) national park because it was a really cool experience for my classmates and me and it might be for other people too!” Another student put it succinctly: “That field trip was awesome.” Children ages 6 to 12 can become NPS Junior Rangers at any time by visiting the Zimmerman Center to pick up the free workbook to complete. The center is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays through Sundays. Guided tours of the historic house are offered throughout the day on the weekends. The Junior Ranger book may also be found at www.susquehannaheritage.org/ explore-2/captain-john-smith-trail/. Each year, Susquehanna Heritage receives funding from the National Park Foundation’s Every Kid in a Park initiative in cooperation with the NPS to offer the program to schools at no charge. Since its inception in 2016, all fourth-graders from the Eastern York School District have participated in the program. At the end of the conference, the students voted on the top eight conferees. Seven of the students received the Lloyd Bollinger Award, a $350 cash award. The seven students were Harrison Perring of York Suburban High School, Victoria

Diakon Reports Local Benefit Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries and Diakon Child, Family and Community Ministries had a more than $20 million community benefit last year. The nonprofit organization, which locally operates Diakon Youth Services and Diakon Adoption and Foster Care, with an office in York, recently released its 2017 community benefit report detailing an overall impact of $20.071 million. The figure represents charitable care provided within Diakon’s senior living communities and its range of child and family services, as well as free public educational sessions, the provision of free meeting space for community groups, service as a clinical training site, and veterans’ assistance-related education. Regional community benefit amounted to nearly $500,000. Community benefit refers to the way Diakon makes a difference beyond direct service and speaks to Diakon’s particular concern for those with lower incomes or other limited resources. Quantification of community benefit was done in accordance with national guidelines developed by the Catholic Health Association of the United States, particularly in terms of social accountability for Continuing Care Retirement Communities. For more details, readers may contact William Swanger at 717-795-0308 or swangerb@diakon.org.
