Forty-six local law enforcement agencies throughout south central Pennsylvania are joining the Pennsylvania State Police to conduct the third targeted aggressive driving enforcement wave through Sunday, Aug. 26. South central Pennsylvania municipal departments are from Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. As part of the Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education

Project, the third wave will aim to reduce the number of aggressive driving related crashes, injuries and deaths on roadways throughout the state. Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket. The enforcement wave will focus on red light running, the Steer Clear law, tailgating, and speeding. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or other

aggressive actions will also be cited. During the last enforcement wave from March 19 to April 29, 45 participating municipal law enforcement agencies made contact with 4,376 vehicles, issuing 4,144 citations; 2,761 of those citations were speeding violations. In addition, 26 texting violations were cited, 18 fugitive apprehensions were made, and 27 impaired drivers were removed from roadways.

The aggressive driving enforcement is a part of the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project and is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). More than 235 municipal law enforcement agencies throughout Pennsylvania are participating. For more information, readers may visit www.penndot.gov/safety.

Her name is Lorraine Murungu. Her son, who is named Blessed, was born with cerebral palsy, and he is paraplegic and unable to speak. Murungu has learned to make rag dolls, a product that can be marketed heavily near the beginning of the school year in Zimbabwe, where Murungu lives. A loan from a HOPE International group has helped make her business possible. When Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, landed in Zimbabwe with a team of 22 others in January, he was thinking about the difference HOPE International has made by teaching individuals in 15 countries about savings groups and microfinance. But as he watched Murungu and other women who have benefited from HOPE as they worshipped God, he found himself learning from them. “I heard them talk, praying for each other and supporting each other,” said Rutt, who was struck by the humility and gratitude he witnessed. “Before we left, Lorraine asked me, ‘What can we pray for, for you as you go back to Pennsylvania?’ That struck me as insightful and showed me so much depth of character and integrity,” said Rutt. HOPE International is a Lancaster-based nonprofit that strives to empower clients through basic business training to help them start their own businesses. The organization is currently planning its 18th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept.

Round one of the four-person scramble-format tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. Round two will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Morning golfers will receive a boxed breakfast and buffet lunch, and afternoon participants will receive a boxed lunch and a buffet dinner. According to HOPE special events coordinator Carley Bilindabagabo, the tournament can comfortably accommodate about 160 golfers per round. Special prizes will be given to golfers who are closest to the pin, make the longest drive, or shoot a holein-one. Through working with her savings group, called “Kuwirirana,” which loosely translates to “getting along,” Murungu was able to purchase a sewing

machine she can use to make rag dolls. Her life is one of many touched by HOPE, but Rutt asks those who hear about her life to learn from Murungu. “I want to encourage us to get away from the idea that we have the answers and we are just here to help someone by sending them money,” he said. “I want us to look for ways we can learn from each other (because) we are on a journey together, and we should be praying for each other.” To make the journeys of HOPE clients more real to golfers who participate in the tournaments, organizers have devised an activity to engage golfers on the links. “We will have client images with their names and businesses stationed on the course,” said Bilindabagabo. “Each golfer will

receive a card, and they fill in the card as they go through the course with the name of the business,” she explained. If the golfer completes the whole card correctly, he or she can be entered into a drawing for a prize. Bilindabagabo noted that much of the $350,000 HOPE would like to raise from the tournament will be donated in the form of sponsorships. A variety of sponsorship levels are available to businesses. Packages start with two golfers and recognition during the awards meal and range to include a HOPE trip to the Dominican Republic and golfing and a meal for 12 participants. Readers who would like to take part in the tournament may visit www.hopeinternational.org/pagolf.

share their families’ experiences and answer questions about delight-directed or child-led learning, eclectic homeschooling, unschooling, and more, including what counts as educational and “What about college?” The day will begin with checkin, coffee, and a light breakfast at 8:30 a.m. The first session, “Getting Started,” will begin at 9 a.m. and will cover why homeschooling does not have to be similar to public school and how parents can pique their children’s interest in learning. The second session, “Recordkeeping and Evaluations,” set for 10:45 a.m., will focus on how nontraditional learning looks on paper and how it can be done in compliance with Pennsylvania’s recordkeeping requirements. Lunch will be at 12:15 p.m. Attendees should pack a lunch. Coffee and other beverages will be provided. The third session, “High School,” will start at 1 p.m. It will address issues specifically dealing with the high school years and graduation requirements in Pennsylvania. Beginning in the 1840s, more than 70,000 Latter-day Saints made the trip from Nauvoo, Ill., to Salt Lake City, Utah, utilizing handcarts and wagons. To re-enact these journeys by taking a 15-mile trek, a total of 93 youths from the York and Lancaster congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints convened at Camp Liahona in Caledonia, near Chambersburg, from June 28 to 30. The youths, between the ages of 14 and 18, were organized into nine families, each with an adult ma and an adult pa. They dressed in pioneer-style clothing. During their journey, they pushed and pulled handcarts filled with provisions and personal items. They slept under the stars at night, and they had to leave their cellphones behind. On June 29, after packing up the camp, the families hiked approximately 4 to 5 miles, stopping periodically to eat, rest, and set up camp. Their meals were

pioneer recipes cooked in Dutch ovens. In the afternoon, the youths participated in activities similar to ones the pioneers would have enjoyed, such as stick pull, stick ball, hoop toss, three-legged races, horseshoes, trap ball, hoop roll races, a ring toss, a cornhole toss, a tomahawk throw, sack races, and more, including a square dance with a country band. They also learned skills, such as black powder rifle shooting, candle making, and butter making, and they held testimonial meetings. In the morning on June 30, they packed their burdens onto the handcarts to take a final 3mile trek to their starting point. On July 24, Latter-day Saints celebrated Pioneer Day as a reminder of the hardships endured by the pioneers on their trek. Pioneer Day commemorates that day in 1847 when Brigham Young and the first wave of Saints arrived in Salt Lake City. The trek occurs every four years.

Youths from the Lancaster Stake with wards in York and Lancaster counties pulled handcarts filled with their gear as they reenacted the Mormon pioneer trek that took place in the 1800s from Nauvoo, Ill., to Salt Lake City, Utah. Among the participants were (back, from left) Staheli Palmer, Kylee Splattstoesser, Courtney Ohl, Maia Knudson, (front) Haley Smith, and Haley Mair.

Bob Chilcott’s setting of Christina Rosetti’s poem “Remember Me,â€? and Eriks Esenvalds’ setting of Sara Teasdale’s “Only in Sleep.â€? Songs from early America will conclude the concert. School Changes Name, Opens Enrollment The Christian School of York, 907 Greenbriar Road, York, has changed the name of its accredited preschool program to Christian School of York Preschool. Formerly called the Early Education Center, Christian School of York Preschool changed its name with the goal of more clearly communicating the biblicallybased education provided to children ages 2 to 5. Additionally, Christian School of York Preschool will now operate on an open admission model, allowing more students from the York and greater York region to attend the school. Readers may contact the admissions office at 717-767-6842 for more details. Christian School of York Preschool’s 12,000-square-foot Dr. David N. Thompson Center for Early Education was built specifically for preschool education and opened in 2009. It features large, bright classrooms; a dramatic playroom; an oversized recreation room; and a 4,000square-foot, fenced-in, rubbertiled play yard. The curriculum at Christian School of York Preschool is designed to grow the hearts and minds of young students through a variety of part- or full-time, multi-day class options for prekindergartners ages 2 to 4. The preschool operates in line with the academic calendar year of the Christian School of York. Education at Christian School of York Preschool is designed to grow students cognitively, socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Biblical principles are incorporated in every learning domain. The teachers at Christian School of York Preschool are all accredited, professional educators with degrees in early education, elementary education, child development, or more than one of these fields. The program and facility at Christian School of York Preschool are accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International, signifying strict adherence to best practices in every area, including curriculum, physical environment, teacher training and certification, and health and safety standards. The preschool facility was named for Dr. David N. Thompson, who briefly served as headmaster of the Christian School of York and had the vision for creating a state-of-the art Christian learning center for preschool students. Shortly after the blueprints were drawn, he was diagnosed with a fast-spreading pancreatic cancer that ultimately took his life before the opening of the preschool center. His vision remains a driving force of the overall mission of Christian School of York Preschool and the Christian School of York. For more information about Christian School of York Preschool and the Christian School of York, readers may visit www.CSYonline.com.
