“These six things the LORD hates . . .” Proverbs 6:16 “

T

he LORD hates . . .” This combination of words would surprise many. We are so used to hearing “the LORD loves”, that hearing the opposite may startle us. Sadly, there is such an emphasis made on God’s love that the impression is widespread that God is incapable of hatred. But the Bible speaks repeatedly of both. In Proverbs 6:16 we read, “These six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.” These are by no means the only things God hates. There are other sins, many of them, which are also listed throughout the Bible which are abominable to God. Psalm 5:5, 6: “The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity. You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.” When the love of God is taught today, the impression is given that God’s love means that God doesn’t take His authority over us seriously, that His commandments are really only suggestions, desires, wishes. There

and Notre Dame” on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. at the school. Brian S. Collier, University of Notre Dame graduate and faculty member, will present a lecture on the history of the United States through the lens of Notre Dame. Admission is free. YCHS will hold its 28th annual golf tournament on Monday, Sept. 17, at Out Door Country Club, 1157 Detwiler Drive, York. Registration for the four-person scramble tournament will begin at 7:30 a.m. with play beginning at 8 a.m. The fee includes green fee, cart rental, refreshments, lunch, and prizes. Proceeds will benefit the York Catholic Fund. Sponsorships are available. The registration deadline is Tuesday, Sept. 4. For more information or to register, readers may contact LeAnn Citrone at 717-846-8871, ext. 216, or lcitrone@yorkcatholic.org.

is an ongoing retreat in many churches from teaching the wrath of God, which is an aspect of His righteousness. As a result, sin is considered to be trivial, not only by man (which is sinfully natural), but even by God. But God drowned the world, and He destroyed Sodom. But if God is indifferent to our sins, the crucifixion of Jesus Christ becomes unnecessary for the salvation of sinners, for there is nothing from which to be saved. No one spoke more about hell in the Bible than Jesus, who is described in Psalm 45:7 (and it is quoted again of Him in Hebrews 1:9) “You love righteousness and hate wickedness.” Christ hates wickedness, and He said that when He returns to judge the world, there will be many to whom He will say, “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” God’s love has sent a Savior into the world and whoever repents and believes in Him will be saved. But whoever turns away from Christ will find that God “hates all workers of iniquity.” “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16.

If you would like a copy of a Bible and/or a pamphlet entitled “Where Do We Go From Here,” please send your name and address to West Side Baptist Church, P.O. Box 274, Thomasville, PA 17364 and we will be happy to mail you what you request. R014480
