Middletown Matmen Topple Trinity, 40-33 by Eric Pyles

40-33 and falling to Milton Hershey 45-32, before traveling to Annville to As January days continue to flip by, partake in the Dutchman Duals on the Middletown wrestling team finds Saturday. Add in this week’s twin dual themselves smack dab in the middle matches plus a trip to New Oxford for of their busy season. After just two old the Colonials Invitational Tournament and the Blue Raiders will have knocked out half of their season in a two week stretch. The busy stretch kicked off on January 8th with that 40-33 win over Trinity. The Blue Raiders claimed eight of the 14 weight classes but got off to a slow start with the Shamrocks opening the match with three straight wins. Case Woodley put the first dent in the ‘Rocks’ 15-0 lead with a 5-2 win over Zach Scherr at 170. Damion Williams followed with another win at 182 to make it 15-6 but Trinity broke up the Middletown run with a 195-pound win. Quincy Reinnagel followed with Middletown’s first bonus point win, pinning Christian Cirelli just before the one-minute mark of their 220-pound clash. A setback in the heavyweight match left Middletown staring at a 27-12 deficit with six weight classes remaining. Krea Shaeffer got the comeback rolling with a forfeit win at 106 while Photo by Cheri Sine Luke Fegley and Nathan Brady needed The Raiders’ Kenny Britcher controls Trinity’s Wyatt Bender a combined 77 seconds to put during 145-pound action in Middletown’s 40-33 win over the Middletown in front. while Brady needed three seconds longer to dispatch his 120-pound foe. The lead was short lived as Trinity picked up their final points with a forfeit win at 126. Ryan Berstler put the Blue Raiders back in front, this time for good with his major decision win at 132 while Joseph Spear capped the match with a forfeit win at 138. Middletown followed their comeback win over Trinity with a 45-32 loss to Milton Hershey on Thursday. The Blue Raiders won only six weight classes but five of them came in a row starting with Zach Malay at 113. Malay topped Joshua Minners by an 8-3 count. Fegley followed with a pinfall win over Joseph Roberto at 120 with Brady making it three in a row thanks to a tech fall victory over Devohn Page at 126. Berstler and Spear wrapped up the five-match run with another two pinfall wins. Berstler took care of Tim Burge at the 1:32 mark of their 132-pound bout while Spear needed just 40 seconds to pin Jayson Dodds. Reinnagel picked up the final Middletown win on the day courtesy of a Spartan forfeit at 285. The Blue Raiders finished their week with a trip to Annville for the Dutchman Duals. Middletown went 3-2 on the day with wins over Northeastern (65-12), Central Dauphin East (51-24) and the host Dutchman (58-18) out numbering losses to

Solanco (42-31) and LampeterStrasburg (48-24). Middletown saw five different wrestlers enjoy 5-0 days with Berstler hitting a career milestone during his perfect run. The senior earned career win number 100 to highlight Middletown’s five-win quintet. Spear and Joseph each earned four of their five wins via pinfall with Spear adding a major decision and Joseph a forfeit for their fifth wins. Fegley and Brady completed the quintet as the final two Blue Raiders with 5-0 marks for the day. Ayden Miller gave Middletown a sixth wrestler with a perfect mark but the sophomore wrestled just one match for a 1-0 day. Woodley, Troy Stein and Schaeffer also returned from Annville with one victory each. Malay fell just short of a perfect day, finishing 3-1 with a loss against Solanco ending Malay’s shot at perfection. Corradi and Reinnagel finished the day with two wins while Britcher matches the team’s 3-2 mark. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL History was also made in Hershey when Katie Fitzpatrick scored her 1,000th career point with a 33-point outburst. The scoring binge accounted for the bulk of Middletown’s points

in their 47-13 victory over Milton Hershey on January 11th. The Lady Raiders dropped their only other game last week, falling to Northern Lebanon by a 52-3 final on the 9th. Middletown opened the game with a 10-5 edge through one quarter but the Lady Vikings used a 47-27 run over the final three frames to flip a five-point Middletown lead into a 15-point NL win. Fitzpatrick collected a game high 20 in the loss with Joci Koser (nine points), Tamia Hill-Johnson (four points) and Ayanna Reeves (four points) finishing up the scoring. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The boys’ basketball team was in action twice last week with an odd schedule quirk putting those games on back to back nights. The Blue Raiders dropped Friday’s contest opposite Milton Hershey by a 76-41 final. “With some different guys getting on the floor due to some injuries, I thought we competed and didn’t back down from a well-balanced, experienced Milton Hershey,” stated head coach Chris Bradford. Julian Nester matched the Spartans’ Joshua Parre for game high honors with his 15-point effort but that did little to offset Milton Hershey’s offensive onslaught. Tajae Broadie added 11 points and

Sajer, of Camp Hill, is the president and founder of Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors Inc., an all-volunteer, statewide nonprofit corporation formed to assist wounded and disabled veterans of the commonwealth to recover physically, mentally, and emotionally. Sajer and her

husband, the late Maj. Gen. Gerald T. Sajer, established the nation’s first Family Support Program for the Pennsylvania National Guard, which created networks to inform and support the families of National Guard soldiers and airmen as the frequency and length of their deployments to support the war efforts in Iraq increased. Frozen Foot Race Series from pg 1 By Chelsea Peifer

The Frozen Foot 5K and 10K Race Series is back for its 30th year. The threerace series will kick off on Sunday, Jan. 20, at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. Participants who complete all three races will now have the opportunity to collect a unique set of finishers’ medals. “This is the first year that we’ve added finishers’ medals,” explained race director Chuck Wells. “If you finish all three races, you’ll be able to build yourself a snowman (out of the medals).” The races are set to begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Jan. 20, Feb. 17, and March 17, on the campus of Elizabethtown College. Each of the three races will follow the same rolling route through a neighboring development and around the college campus. Wells noted that the Idiots Option 10K, which was added for the first time in 2017, was a success and will be available again for those looking to

complete a longer distance by covering the 5K course twice. The name sparked from a conversation Wells had in the past with two participants: One suggested the addition of a 10K, while the other remarked, “What kind of idiot would do that?” Interested individuals may register for the 5K or 10K series at www.applied racemgmt.com/events. Those who register for the series by the first race will receive a custom long-sleeve tech shirt. On-site registration will also be available prior to each race. Race packet pickup will take place on race days between noon and 1:45 p.m. in the Bucher Meetinghouse at Elizabethtown College. Signage will be posted directing participants to the area. Following each race, hot homemade soup will be served. Awards will be presented at approximately 3:15 p.m. Participants will also be entered to win door prize giveaways. Individual event awards will be bestowed upon the overall male and female winners, the masters male

and female winners, and the first-, second- and third-place male and female winners for each five-year age group. Series awards, which will be presented at a ceremony at Funk Brewing, 28 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, on March 17, will include prize money for the overall male and female winners and the masters male and female winners. Additional prizes will be distributed to the top three male and female finishers in each age group. Special discounts will be available at Funk Brewing to Frozen Foot participants following each race. Through the decades, Wells said that the number of runners has fluctuated perhaps due to the influx of 5K events in recent years. The inaugural Frozen Foot series had 16 runners and later grew to more than 800 participants one year; however, in recent years Wells said the event has averaged about 375 participants. “I don’t know that any of us that worked on (Frozen Foot) in the beginning thought that it would be around this

long,” said Wells. “It’s great. I’m happy that the race has been around that long.” A portion of the race proceeds benefits the Christ Church United Church of Christ mission fund to help people domestically and abroad. Wells said that the destination for this summer’s service project has not yet been finalized but will likely be somewhere within the United States. For more information on the Frozen Foot 5K Race Series, interested individuals may visit the aforementioned website or call Wells at 717-580-6983. Pictured on front:

The 30th annual Frozen Foot 5K and 10K Race Series will offer three Sunday afternoon races at Elizabethtown College on Jan. 20, Feb. 17, and March 17. New for 2019 is the addition of finishers’ medals for those who complete all three races.

A local business that offers educational classes and camps for toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children will have a table of science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) activities set up for attendees to try and purchase. Plus, a local school bus service will have a bus parked outside for another Touch-A-Bus experience, which Leilous said was a popular part of last year’s preschool fair, too. Leilous described the MOMS Club of Elizabethtown as a group of mothers that are currently at

home raising their children. Members must have an Elizabethtown, Mount Joy, Bainbridge, Marietta, Maytown, or Lawn address to join officially, as the club is an official chapter of MOMS Club International. The group gathers monthly at an official Club Connections meeting, typically held on the first Friday of each month at a location in Elizabethtown. “This meeting is where club news, planning, and event discussion take place while children play,” said Leilous. Members also take turns planning and hosting play dates, activities, outings, and child-friendly field trips to local places. “It is a great way for moms to make friends with other moms in the area that are also currently home and gives children opportunities to interact and play with others,” commented Leilous. 12 - COMMUNITYCOURIER - Middletown Edition - January 16, 2019

Neighborhood

Chatter HI, everyone! More than halfway through January already. Gee whiz, before you know it, Christmas will be here again. Maybe I should just leave the decorations up all year since time flies so fast! (OK, OK, OK. I will take them down next weekend. Waaaah!) Lesson One day a school teacher wrote on the board the following: 9x1=7 9x2=18 9x3=27 9x4=36 9x5=45 9x6=54 9x7=63 9x8=72 9x9=81 9x10=90 When she was done, she looked to the students and they were all laughing at her because of the first equation, which was wrong, and then the teacher said the following: I wrote that first one wrong on purpose,

because I wanted you to learn something important. This was for you to know how the world out there will treat you. You can see that I wrote the RIGHT thing 9 times, but none of you congratulated me for it. But you all laughed and criticized me because of one wrong thing I did. So this is the lesson: The world may never appreciate the good you do a million times, but will criticize the one wrong thing you do ... don’t get discouraged. ALWAYS RISE ABOVE ALL THE LAUGHTER AND CRITICISM AND STAY STRONG. Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to Georgie Cleland of Middletown! His cake-day is Jan. 16. Happy birthday to Wendy Carlson of Londonderry Township! Her cake-day is Jan. 22. I hope your day is at least half as nice as you, Wendy! Community Dinner A roast beef dinner, including cheesy potatoes, glazed carrots, applesauce, a roll, a beverage, and dessert, will be served on Monday, Jan. 21, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Evangelical United Methodist Church, 157 E. Water St., Middletown. Takeouts are also available. A cost is involved. For more information, call 944-6181. The church is handicapped-accessible. Everyone is invited! Random Thought. Being cremated is my last hope for a smoking hot body. Recipe of the Week Blueberry Bread Pudding Ingredients: 4 cups bread cubes 1/4 cup butter (or margarine, cut in pieces) 2/3 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen, rinsed well and drained) 1/4 cup water 2 tablespoons lemon juice (fresh) Directions: 1. In a mixing bowl, combine bread, butter, sugar, salt, blueberries, water, and lemon juice. 2. Pack mixture into a generously buttered 1 1/2-quart baking dish. 3. Bake at 350 F for 40 minutes, until set. 4. Serve hot or cold with milk, cream, whipped cream, or ice cream! Tip of the Week Before you pour sticky substances (such as peanut butter) into a measuring cup, fill it with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don’t dry the cup. Next, add your ingredient and watch how easily it comes right out. Fact of the Week Chocolate was used as medicine during the 18th century. It was believed that chocolate could cure a stomach ache. (In my mind, it is a cure-all!) Joke of the Week SNOW ALERT Expecting: Zero (0) to 85 inches of snow Starting: Saturday or Sunday or Monday maybe, but probably not happening at all. Recommendations: Stock up on all necessities immediately and prepare for a snowpocalypse or a beautiful weekend, either one is possible. Thank You Thanks to Chris Quaca of Royalton for the joke about the Snow Alert! That was hilarious but really pretty true. Food for Thought “Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words. Keep your words positive because you words become your behavior. Keep your behavior positive because your behavior becomes your habits. Keep your habits positive because your habits become your values. Keep your values positive because your values become your destiny.” (Gandhi)
