On Jan. 10, the fourth annual Army and Navy culinary competition at the 103rd Pennsylvania Farm Show anchored Military, Veterans and Their Families Day, a full day of events honoring veterans for their service. The day also included demonstrations. In the culinary competition, the Army team was declared the winner. Army Sgt. Curtis A. Campbell, Culinary Specialist at the Army Executive Dining Facility, enlisted the aid of television news reporters Shannon Murphy and Corinne Lillis. The Army team was pitted against U.S. Navy Chief Culinary Specialist (Surface Warfare/Aviation Warfare) Chief Frederic M. Gilmore and his teammates, television news reporters Ali Lanyon and James Crummel, in an “Iron Chef”-style cook-off. Teams were given a bag of mystery ingredients and 30 minutes to prepare and plate dishes using PA Preferred, Pennsylvania-grown, locally sourced items. Air Force veteran Troy Jochem of Hope Hill Lavender Farm and Marine veteran John
Plasterer from Shad Stone Farm, both Homegrown By Heroes members, judged the event. They were joined by Barry Crumlich, executive chef at the Pennsylvania governor’s residence; John Moeller, owner and executive chef at Greenfield Restaurant and Bar in Lancaster and author of “Dining at the White House - From the President’s Table to Yours”; and Comcast’s Keystone Region senior director of customer care, Greg Magee. Folk Music Artist To Perform Concert Tracy Grammer, a contemporary folk music artist, will present a concert on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m. at Fort Hunter Centennial Barn, 5300 N. Front St., Harrisburg. The event is sponsored by Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS). Grammer is known for her alto voice, violin, and guitar. In 2002, they toured with Joan Baez both as featured artists and as her bandmates. That year, Carter suffered a massive heart attack and died at age 49. Determined to honor their trajectory and keep Carter’s songs alive, Grammer stayed on the road, releasing several solo and archival recordings, including “Little Blue Egg,” which was the No. 1 most played album on folk radio in 2012 and contained that year’s No. 1 most played song. Grammer is currently touring to celebrate the release of “Low Tide,” her first album of original songs. Co-produced with longtime touring partner and multi-instrumentalist Jim Henry, who will appear with Grammer in the concert, the album was released Jan. 19, 2018, on Grammer’s own label. Grammer plays at theaters, coffeehouses, and festivals across the U.S. and Canada regularly, and she has traveled to Europe and Japan. She is the director of the Dave Carter Legacy Project, and

Memorial Ice Wall Planned The Downtown Carlisle Association (DCA) recently unveiled a new veterans and community memorial wall exhibit to be showcased at the next UPMC Pinnacle Ice Art Fest. Scheduled for display on Friday, Feb. 8, through Sunday, Feb. 10, the wall, made completely out of crystal-clear ice, will grow in length and height as more veterans associations, family members, and community members invest in the monument with names of loved ones, community supporters, and local groups. The wall will be in front of a 6-foot patriotic ice sculpture of an American eagle, with colored shooting stars and flag-like ice carvings. The idea for the Memorial Ice Wall came from discussions on how to get larger sculptures created while engaging more community participation. A crowd-funded sculpture like this is unique in that the more people who contribute to the wall, the larger it will be. The DCA is quick to note also that names on the wall do not need to be those of deceased individuals, but anyone or any group the community is proud to honor, including family members, sports teams, public officials, churches, and others. The Memorial Ice Wall will be on display at Veteran’s Courtyard, next to the Old Courthouse at the corner of Hanover and High streets, Carlisle. For details on purchasing a brick or to obtain a form to reserve a brick, readers may visit www.love carlisle.com. More details on participating or sponsoring the Memorial Ice Wall can be directed to Larenda Twigg at 717-382-8588 or sales@carlisle vault.com.

Chatter Hi, everyone! The end of January is probably the hardest time of the year for me. Christmas is officially over now in my house. Well, I guess I shouldn’t say that. Christmas is in my heart year-round. It’s just that now my Christmas tree is down, and I miss it. But you know as well as I do that the next 10 months are going to fly by and my tree will be back up for another two months! Two months up, 10 months down, two months up, 10 months down! Bill His name is Bill. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans, and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college. He is brilliant - kind of profound and very, very bright. He became a Christian while attending college. Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative church. They want to develop a ministry for the students but are not sure how to go about it. One day Bill decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair. The service has already started, and so Bill starts down the aisle looking for a seat. The church is completely packed, and he can’t find a seat. By now, people are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything. Bill gets closer and closer to the pulpit, and when he realizes
there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet. By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the air is thick. About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the back of the church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward Bill. Now, the deacon is in his eighties, has silver-gray hair, and a three-piece suit. He is a godly man, very elegant, very dignified, very courtly. He walks with a cane and, as he starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves that you can’t blame him for what he’s going to do. How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand some college kid on the floor? It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy. The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man’s cane. All eyes are focused on him. You can’t even hear anyone breathing. The minister can’t even preach the sermon until the deacon does what he has to do. And now they see this elderly man drop his cane on the floor. With great difficulty, he lowers himself and sits down next to Bill and worships with him so he won’t be alone. Everyone chokes up with emotion. W hen the minister gains control, he says, “ W hat I’m about to preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget.”
It has been said, “Be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible some people will ever read!” Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to Janet Pickel of Middletown! Her cake-day is Jan. 30. Recipe of the Week Impossibly Easy Coconut Pie Ingredients: 1 cup flaked or shredded coconut 3/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup baking mix 1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened 2 cups milk 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla 4 eggs
Directions: 1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease 9-inch pie plate with shortening or cooking spray. 2. In medium bowl, stir all ingredients until blended. Pour into pie plate. 3. Bake 50 to 55 minutes or until golden brown and knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Cover and refrigerate any remaining pie. Tip of the Week Have houseplants with dusty leaves? Grab a banana and eat it and keep the skin. Use the skin to clean the leaves. The dust will stick right to it, and the juice is healthy for the plants. Fact of the Week The original 10 month, 304day Roman calendar did not work for long because it did not align with the seasons. King Numa Pompilius reformed the calendar around 700 B.C. by adding the months of January (Ianuarius) and February (Februarius) to the original 10 months, which increased the year’s length to 355 days. After a few hundred years, the 365-day Julian calendar was introduced by Julius Caesar in the 40s B.C., replacing the Roman calendar. Food for Thought Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them. - Dalai Lama Have a great week, everybody!

AHA Sets National Wear Red Day The American Heart Association (AHA) has announced that National Wear Red Day will be marked on Friday, Feb. 1, as February is designated as American Heart Month. Individuals, workplaces, and landmarks across central Pennsylvania will “go red” in celebration of National Wear Red Day. The initiative aims to unite millions of people for a common goal: the eradication of heart disease and stroke. Individuals are encouraged to wear red on Feb. 1 to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease. Participants are encouraged to share their efforts on social media using the hashtag #WearRedandGive. In 2004, the AHA created Go Red for
Women, a social initiative designed to dispel myths and raise awareness of heart disease and stroke as the No. 1 killer of women, as well as to empower women to take charge of their heart health. Go Red for Women aims to encourage awareness of the issue of women and heart disease and also action to save more lives. In 2010, the AHA set a strategic goal of reducing death and disability from cardiovascular disease and strokes by 20 percent while improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent by the year 2020. For more information, readers may visit www.WearRedDay.org or http://GoRedForWomen.org.
Workshop Series from pg 1 There is a cost per workshop, with a discount for preregistration by the Wednesday prior to the workshop. Registration in person will be full price. To register, readers may visit https://extension.psu.edu and search
