Deep in the interior jungle regions of the tiny South Pacific island of Vanuatu, NiVan villagers gather their jugs to begin the more-than-one-hour hike each way to collect water. In Pennsylvania, Douglas Flemmens, Messiah College’s director of The Collaboratory, wraps up preparations for The Collaboratory’s Monday night discipleship meeting with students. Two very different worlds collide when The Collaboratory teams up with Friends In Action Intl. (FIA) to complete life-changing community transformation projects in various regions around the globe. “Our Collaboratory mission statement boils down to two things: changing the world and changing us,” shared Flemmens. “(Working with FIA), we have the opportunity to do good projects in various places around the globe. This changes our interface with our

learning and the application of what we are learning. At the same time, it changes our hearts. We see in bigger ways what God is doing in various places around the world.” As part of this focus, Messiah’s engineering students have teamed up with FIA, which has a headquarters near Middletown, to provide more than 1,400 Rama Cay people with a block press to produce structural building blocks for residential housing off the east coast of Nicaragua, as storms and the elements rot wooden huts. The initial efforts on this project are slated to eventually relieve the overcrowding and unsanitary conditions of more than 200 families on the tiny island. The phrase “its an honor just to be nominated” may not typically be associated with high school wrestling but with some liberal application and a bit of imagination, the phrase can apply to the Middletown wrestling team and this season’s postseason appearance. The Blue Raiders posted a 10-5 regular season record, good enough to slot head coach Dan Riggs’ squad in the ninth spot of the 12-team, District 3-2A team championship tournament. “To make it to the postseason as a team this season was one of our goals, and we were able to accomplish that,” said Riggs of his squad’s first team championship appearance since the 2012-2013 season. “It was nice to get a win against ELCO but we knew it was going to be tough after the preliminary round.” As Riggs mentioned, Middletown’s first team championship appearance in six seasons did net them their first postseason team win in nine years but a 45-32 victory over ELCO in the opening round ended up the Blue Raiders lone victory. Back-to-back losses to top seeded Northern Lebanon as well as fifth seeded Upper Dauphin left the Blue Raiders out of the quest for the final spot in the PIAA-2A team championship. “We were hoping to win a few tossup matches to make the final score closer, but we were unable to,” said Riggs. “Northern Lebanon and Upper Dauphin were welled coached and both teams came ready to compete, and some of our guys didn’t.” Despite the Blue Raiders PIAA quest coming to a close Riggs pointed out that Middletown is not finished checking items off their list of preseason goals. “Afterwards we told

the guys that they had nothing to be ashamed of and that their season isn’t over yet, that we still have a shot at winning the conference when we face Susquehanna Township.” The Blue Raiders will look to check off the division title from their list when, weather permitting, they close out the regular season with a trip to Susquehanna Township on February 7th. Middletown picked up their first District 3 team win since a 2010 victory over New Oxford via a January 28th trip to Myerstown where they toppled the Raiders of ELCO by a 45-32 final. Middletown’s version of the Raiders claimed eight of the 14 weight classes with seven of those eight awarding Middletown the six-point max to their team score. ELCO managed just four such victories helping Middletown pull away. Despite coming out on top once everything was settled, Middletown opened the match with a loss to fall into a quick 6-0 hole. Jeremy Wells kicked off the run to victory by slipping past Adam Koehler, 4-3, in their 220-pound tussle. Quincy Reinnagel followed with the first of those bonus point pinfalls, ending his match with Bailey Beamesderfer just before the end of the first period. Middletown’s 9-6 lead would be short lived as an ELCO victory at 106 moved them back in front. ELCO’s lead was gone even quicker than Middletown’s as Zach Malay picked up the match’s lone forfeit at 113, giving the Blue Raiders a lead they would not relinquish. Luke Fegley needed a mere 30 seconds to stretch the lead to 21-12, earning a pinfall victory over Dru Yoder at 120. An ELCO win at 126 made the score 21-15 but Middletown ripped off three straight

pinfall wins to stretch their lead to 39-15 with four matches remaining. Ryan Berstler opened that run with a 3:25 pinfall win over Sami Good at 132. Joseph Spear needed nearly the entire six minutes of his 138-pound match with Keegan Donmoyer but the Middletown junior was able to pull out the pin with 38-seconds remaining to put the score at 33-15. Diante Gray closed out the run by pinning Stephen Wiczalkowski at the 4:56 mark of their 145-pound clash. ELCO was able to claim three of the final four bouts, all with bonus points but all that managed to do was shrink the final margin to 19 points. Chris Joseph kept ELCO from closing out the match with four straight wins, pinning Hunter Hockley just 40 seconds into their 160-pound match. Middletown’s final two district matches both happened on January 30th with a 44-26 quarterfinal loss to host Northern Lebanon setting up a consolation face-off with Upper Dauphin that went to the Trojans by a 47-25 final. The Blue Raiders opened the evening’s double header on the main mat in a battle with the top seeded Vikings on the right track. At 138, Spear was able put Middletown out in front 6-0 thanks to a second period pin of Cooper Gill. The next Middletown victory came at 220 but six straight Northern Lebanon wins came first putting the Vikings in front 26-6. Reinnagel claimed that 220-pound victory by pinning Benjamin Bomberger with 29-seconds remaining in the first period. Middletown saw their comeback window close with Northern Lebanon wins at 285 and 106 that put the match out of reach at 38-12.

The Blue Raiders managed to shrink the final margin by winning three of the final four matches starting with Fegley’s pinfall win over Kayden Clark at 113. Nathan Brady followed with a 5-2 win over Brandon Breidegan at 120 that closed the gap to 38-21 but a NL win at 126 stretched it to 44-21. A 16-1 Berstler tech fall closed out the quarterfinal affair and set the final at 44-26. After a short rest the Blue Raiders made the short trek to Northern Lebanon’s Middle School Gymnasium for their District 3-2A consolation match opposite Upper Dauphin. The result was a 47-25 Trojan victory that ended the team portion of Middletown’s postseason. The Blue Raiders managed another five wins but back-to-back major decisions in favor of Upper Dauphin put Middletown in a quick 8-0 hole. Joseph’s forfeit win at 160 closed the gap to 8-6 but four straight Trojan wins made it a 32-6 at the midway point. Reinnagel broke up the Upper Dauphin run with a pinfall win over Chase Witmer at 285 but Upper Dauphin was able to answer back with a pinfall win of their own at 106. The Blue Raiders did manage to close out the match by winning three of the final five weight classes but the 38-12 deficit was too much to overcome. Fegley picked up the first of those wins, collecting an 11-1 major decision over Maxx Trexler at 113. Brady followed with a 7-4 win over Ethan Paul at 120 that made it 38-19 with two straight Upper Dauphin wins making it 47-19. Spear closed out the match with a 63 second pinfall win over Kade Matter at 138 to set the 47-25 final.

Friends In Action from pg 1

Chatter Hi, everyone! Happy February! I got a cute email from one of my awesome readers, John Gaiski of Lower Swatara Township. John says, “No, I didn’t forget some of my Christmas decorations. That “green” porch light is to mean that I support our troops and thank our vets. Drive down Donald Avenue after dark and before everybody goes to bed and you’ll see a lot of military fans.” Well, thank you, John! I am a big military fan too! My husband, Kevin Condran, is a Navy veteran! So, John, although you are a little partial to the Army, I am a little partial to the Navy! Ha ha ha! Now, I’m going to go get me a green light bulb! I want to show support too! A Tribute to Bob Hope (May 29, 1903 - July 27, 2003) Bob Hope was also a huge supporter of our troops! I hope this will put a smile on your face and in your heart. Tribute to a man who did make a difference: -On turning 70: “You still chase women, but only downhill.” -On turning 80: “That’s the time of your life when even your birthday suit needs pressing.” -On turning 90: “You know you’re getting old when the candles cost more than the cake.” -On turning 100: “ I don’t feel old. In fact, I don’t feel anything until noon. Then it’s time for my nap.” -On giving up his early career, boxing: “I ruined my hands in the ring ... The referee kept stepping on them.” -On never winning an Oscar: “ Welcome to the Academy Awards or, as it’s called at my home, ‘Passover.’” -On golf: “Golf is my profession. Show business is just to pay the green fees.” -On presidents: “ I have performed for 12 presidents and entertained only six.” -On why he chose showbiz for his career: “When I was born, the doctor said to my mother, ‘Congratulations. You have an eightpound ham.’” -On receiving the Congressional Gold Medal: “I feel very humble, but I think I have the strength of character to fight it.”

-On his family’s early poverty: “Four of us slept in the one bed. When it got cold, mother threw on another brother.” -On his six brothers: “That’s how I learned to dance. Waiting for the bathroom.” -On his early failures: “I would not have had anything to eat if it wasn’t for the stuff the audience threw at me.” -On going to heaven: “I’ve done benefits for ALL religions. I’d hate to blow the hereafter on a technicality.” Happy Birthdays First for the week, happy birthday to my sweet “mother-in-law” Betty Condran of Middletown! Her cake-day is Feb. 11. I hope you and Keith have a great day of celebration! Love you, Bets! Happy birthday to Ben Felker of Londonderry Township! His cake-day is Feb. 6. I hope your day is full of everything that makes you happy, Ben! Happy birthday to Deb Baxter of Royalton! Her cake-day is Feb. 6. I hope your day is full of warm sunshine, Deb! Happy birthday to Valerie Heckman of Royalton! Her cakeday is Feb. 9. I hope your day is as fun as you, Val! Miss you! Happy birthday to Jordyn Einzig of Linglestown! Her cake-day is Feb. 9. I hope your day makes you smile from ear to ear, Jordyn! Happy birthday to Dennis Lookenbill of Royalton! His cakeday is Feb. 9. I hope your day is exactly how you want it to be, Denny! I hope your day is fan-smacking-tastic, Jody! Happy birthday to June Goodling of Royalton! His cakeday is Feb. 10. I hope your day is extra wonderful, June! Happy birthday to Lena Alloway of Middletown! Her cakeday is Feb. 11. I hope your day makes you feel like a queen, Lena! Happy birthday to Dick Wagner of Londonderry Township! His

I hope your day is beautiful like you, Beth! Community Dinner A roast turkey dinner, including stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, a beverage, and dessert, will be served on Monday, Feb. 18, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Evangelical United Methodist Church, 157 E. Water St., Middletown. Takeouts are also available. A cost is involved. For more information, call 717-9446181. The church is handicappedaccessible. Everyone is invited! Random Thought. I wonder why dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings. It’s hardly ever for them. Recipe of the Week Easy Vegetable-Beef Soup Ingredients: 1 cup chopped onions 5 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 pound ground beef (at least 80 percent lean) 3 cups beef-flavored broth 1 bag (16 ounces) frozen mixed vegetables 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained

1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce 1 tablespoon vegetable oil Directions: 1. In 5-quart Dutch oven, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add beef, onions and garlic. Cook 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until beef is thoroughly cooked; drain. 2. Stir remaining ingredients into beef mixture in Dutch oven. Heat to boiling over high heat; reduce heat. Cover; simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until hot. Tip of the Week Make it a point to smile at everyone you can. You just never know if your little gesture of warmth and kindness may be the highlight of that person’s day. We need more kindness in this world. Fact of the Week Smiling releases endorphins and makes us feel better; even when you fake a smile, you can feel better. A smile can not only heighten your mood, it can even boost your immune system. It works as a natural drug. Joke of the Week Nine-year-old Joey was asked by his mother what he had learned in Sunday school. “Well, Mom, our teacher told us how God sent Moses behind enemy lines on a rescue mission to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. When he got to the Red Sea, he had his army build a pontoon bridge and all the people walked across safely. Then he radioed headquarters for reinforcements. They sent bombers to blow up the bridge and all the Israelites were saved.” “Now, Joey, is that really what the teacher taught you?” his mother asked. “Well, no, Mom, but if I told it the way the teacher did, you’d never believe it!” Thank You Thanks to Fred Auch of Londonderry Township for the piece on Bob Hope! I loved Bob Hope and I love Fred Auch! Food for Thought No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. (Aesop)

prevented access to a proposed medical center and baseball field from the villagers’ new hurricane-resistant homes. Messiah’s Dr. Phillip Tan also visited the Rama in December 2018 to conduct microbiological and chemical analyses of water sources. “We are pleased to host Messiah’s students with engineering projects that apply their learning to solving real-world problems and meeting tangible needs that demonstrate God’s love,” noted Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director. The latest partnership of FIA and Messiah’s Collaboratory will provide clean water through 16 miles of gravity-fed piping to more than 3,500 NiVan people in Vanuatu - covering 30 villages, two clinics, and three schools. Messiah’s Dr. Thomas Soerens visited the region with FIA after learning about the need of the villagers. “I hear your organization is a friend to the people of my village,” wrote Alani, a NiVan villager. “I write to you in need. The dry season is come, and I cannot catch enough rain water to care for my family. I ask you for water. Please come soon to help my family and my people. We will not make it

through the dry season without help.” The NiVan tribal leaders are already familiar with and grateful for FIA’s efforts to combine construction projects with the spread of the Gospel. The completion of a 6-kilometer road connecting 19 NiVan villages with schools and a medical clinic in 2011 resulted in faster medical transport and supply delivery, as well as more than 240 villagers coming to know Christ. Since 2017, The Collaboratory at Messiah College has partnered with FIA to secure a source of water in a high mountain spring that produces 48 gallons per minute, enough to meet the needs of thousands of villagers nearby. The scope of the project will require approximately $435,000 and five phases to complete. Teams of short-term volunteers are already slated for 2019 and beyond. The community is invited to join the efforts of FIA and Messiah College by providing financial support, donating construction materials, or taking part in a short-term work trip. For more information, readers may contact FIA at 717546-0208 or fia-usa@fiaintl.org or visit www.fiaintl.org.

Musician from pg 1 selected from across the nation and one of eight musicians selected from Pennsylvania. Once she arrived in Florida, Megan began long hours of rehearsing along with other performers. Dennis Glocke, director of concert bands at Penn State University, was the guest conductor of the concert band. Most of Megan’s time was spent rehearsing, but she stated that Glocke broke up rehearsals by talking with

the performers, telling stories, and giving college advice. When they were not rehearsing, students were able to visit Disney’s Magic Kingdom and participate in other nightly events organized for them. The concert band rehearsed multiple songs, which they performed at the end of the weekend. Megan hopes to continue her journey with music in the future.
