The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank recently received $500 to help the organization meet the growing demand for its services, especially in light of the recent shutdown of the federal government. The donation came from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Epsilon Sigma Omega Chapter, and the AKA Foundation of Central Pennsylvania Inc. According to the food bank, the donation equates to 3,000 meals for area residents. The food bank moves more than 1 million pounds of food through its 75,000-square-foot warehouse on Corey Road to its 1,000 community distribution partners each week. In its ServSafe-verified Community Learning Kitchen, volunteer chefs teach participants how to prepare healthy meals on a lean budget so they may teach others. Additionally, teams of volunteers package foods for distribution to senior citizens, members of the military and veterans as well as emergency boxes
to help people in need. Through the food bank’s Fresh Express service, fresh produce is delivered to area schools as well as to lowincome housing communities. In 2017, the food bank worked with Gov. Tom Wolf to establish “A Seat at the Table, A Blueprint for a Hunger Free PA.” The initiative outlines strategies to solve hunger in Pennsylvania and aligns with the interests of both Epsilon Sigma Omega Chapter and the AKA Foundation of Central Pennsylvania Inc. Middletown Closes With Win Over PV by Eric Pyles
In a typical high school basketball season winning the first and last games would be a good thing. And for the Middletown Blue Raiders it was. “It was nice to bookend the season with winning efforts,” said first year head coach Chris Bradford. Unfortunately for Bradford, and the Blue Raider faithful, this year’s extremely young team experienced a very bumpy season in between those two wins. That road included just one other victory leaving the Blue Raiders 3-18 on the year. The February 2 win over West Perry snapped a 15-game slide but Middletown tumbled into a smaller three game snap before taking out Pequea Valley to close
the season. “We could have caved with a double-digit losing streak. Young teams do that,” said Bradford. “But we didn’t. We fought. We got game experience that can’t be substituted with anything else. If we are to improve, move forward and build off of this season, it will be with each and every one of the tough losses, double digit defeats, overtime losses, playing up in the 4th, fighting back in the second half…game experience has no substitute.” The 64-28 season ending win over Pequea Valley took place on February 13 after a few rounds with Mother Nature had pushed the game back three different times. The Blue Raiders took their frustrations over the
multiple postponements out on the Braves, holding the visitors to single digits point totals in three of the four quarters. That included a stifling first half where Middletown allowed a measly nine points, just three of which came in the opening quarter. While Bradford’s bunch was busy locking down the defensive end, they were also busy scoring. Behind Tyler Petroski, the lone senior, Middletown managed 23 points in the first quarter and jumped out to a 23-3 lead. Petroski fueled the first quarter surge, collecting 11 of his 17 points in the frame with nine of them coming from his only made three pointer of the contest. Middletown continued their strong start through the remainder of the
opening half, outscoring Pequea Valley 21-6 in the second quarter and enjoying a 44-9 lead at the break. The Blue Raiders cooled off in the second half, so much so that the Braves were able to post a 12-8 edge in the third quarter but that only served to shrink the lead a mere four points. Middletown regained control in the final frame but not on the same level as their first half dominance, leading to a 12-7 advantage that set the 64-28 final. Julian Nester nipped Petroski by one point for game high honors, finishing with 18 points in the win. Tony Powell added 10 points to give the Blue Raiders three double digit scorers.

Chatter Hi, everyone! Only one more month until spring is officially here! Woot woot! I mean, I love winter, but only during the holiday season. Once the holidays are over, I am ready for sandals and capris! Attitude There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. “Well,” she said, “I think I’ll braid my hair today.” So she did, and she had a wonderful day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. “Hmmm,” she said, “I think I’ll part my hair down the middle today.” So she did, and she had a grand day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. “Well,” she said, “today I’m going to wear my hair in a ponytail.” So she did, and she had a fun, fun day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and noticed that there wasn’t a single hair on her head. “Yay!” she exclaimed. “I don’t have to fix my hair today!” Attitude is everything. Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. Live simply, Love generously, Care deeply, Speak kindly... Leave the rest to God. Random Thought If we were meant to pop out of bed, we’d all sleep in toasters. Recipe of the Week Chocolate Pudding Pizza (You can put your own spin on this easy dessert. Maybe use chocolate chip cookie mix instead of peanut butter cookie, or maybe use crushed candy instead of mini chocolate chips for the sprinkles! Use your imagination!) Ingredients: 1 package (17 1/2 ounces) peanut butter cookie mix 1 carton (12 ounces) spreadable cream cheese, softened 1 3/4 cups cold milk 1 package (3.9 ounces) instant chocolate pudding mix 1 carton (8 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed 1/4 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 375. Prepare cookie mix dough according to package directions. Press into a greased 12-inch pizza pan. Bake until set, about 15 minutes; cool. 2. Beat cream cheese until smooth. Spread over crust. 3. In another bowl, beat milk and pudding mix on medium speed for 2 minutes. Spread over cream cheese layer. 4. Refrigerate until set, about 20 minutes. Spread with whipped topping. Sprinkle with chips. Chill for 1 to 2 hours. Joke of the Week A family had twin boys whose only
resemblance to each other was their looks. If one felt it was too hot, the other thought it was too cold. If one said the TV was too loud, the other claimed the volume needed to be turned up. Opposite in every way, one was an eternal optimist, the other a doom-and-gloom pessimist. Just to see what would happen, on the twins’ birthday, their father loaded the pessimist’s room with every imaginable toy and game. The optimist’s room he loaded with horse manure. That night the father passed by the pessimist’s room and found him sitting amid his new gifts, crying bitterly. “Why are you crying?” the father asked. “Because my friends will be jealous, I’ll have to read all these instructions before I can do anything with this stuff, I’ll constantly need batteries, and my toys will eventually get broken,” answered the pessimist twin. Passing the optimist twin’s room, the father found him dancing for joy in the pile of manure. “What are you so happy about?” he asked. To which the optimist twin replied, “There’s got to be a pony in here somewhere!” Tip of the Week To test to see if an egg is fresh, immerse it in a pan of cool, salted water. If it sinks, it’s fresh. If it floats, throw it away! Fact of the Week The minimum safe distance between a wood-burning stove and flammable objects is three feet. Food for Thought Life is too short for drama and petty things, so kiss slowly, laugh insanely, love truly, and forgive quickly.
Have a great week, everybody!
DMVA Offers Assistance To Veterans The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) encourages veterans to review their benefits with a professional to ensure they are receiving the benefits they have earned through their service and sacrifice. All veterans should occasionally check with a veterans service officer to see if changes in a veteran’s circumstances or changes to benefit policies may have modified the programs a veteran may be eligible to receive. Safeguarding military paperwork, especially the DD-214, which is used to verify military service, is an important first step. The easiest way to manage military documents is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately when an individual leaves the military. Veterans often find that filing their documents for free at their county courthouse of record is an easy way to secure them until needed, which can often be decades into the future. Anyone needing assistance locating their military documentation can call 717-861-8910 or email RA-REQ@pa.gov. Another key step is for veterans to apply for federal health care and state benefits by visiting their local county
director of veterans affairs or area accredited service organizations to take a look at what benefits they may be eligible for and to get help applying for those benefits. A complete list of county directors and their contact information can be found at www.dmva.pa.gov. In addition to connecting with a county director or an accredited service organization, veterans should sign up for the DMVA Veterans Registry, a free tool that electronically delivers timely information about the many state benefits, programs and services available to veterans. Veterans, family members and people who work with veterans can sign up at www.register.dmva.pa.gov. Veterans and their dependents should never pay for help to apply for veterans’ benefits. There are about 200 veterans service officers in Pennsylvania who work with organizations such as the DMVA, county Veterans Affairs offices and several veterans service organizations. They are experienced, trained professionals who provide veterans with advice and assistance at no cost.

Lower Dauphin Students Honored Two Lower Dauphin students were honored with Do the Right Thing awards in November for demonstrating caring about others. Rebeca Garcia, an eighth-grader at Lower Dauphin Middle School, was nominated by two teachers for helping a new student from Guatemala find his way around the
school. Rebeca is fluent in Spanish and translated for the new student. Londonderry Elementary School third-grader Landen Logan was also honored for helping a new student. Landen was recognized for offering to work on classwork with the new student and including him in activities at recess.
The students received gift card, Do the Right Thing T-shirts and certificates, and pizza coupons. The Do the Right Thing program recognizes students in the Lower Dauphin community who have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude or outstanding efforts.
Any adult over the age of 18 can nominate a child. A volunteer committee reviews the student nominations on a monthly basis and selects a winner for each month. For more information, readers may contact Angela Durantine at adurantine@ldsd.org.

which they were principally involved in design, development or implementation. The categories, award winners and projects are as follows: Growing Our Communities: RGS Associates, “VERDE Apartments,” which had the goal to create a housing development in Hummelstown Borough that would replace blighted buildings and revitalize a neighborhood that was otherwise deteriorating and vacant. Growing Our Economy: Herbert, Rowland and Grubic Inc., “Duke Street Bridge Replacement Project,” which had the goal to replace a bridge over the Swatara Creek between Hummelstown Borough and South Hanover Township that had been built in 1910 and was deemed in poor condition. Growing Within Our Environment: Middle Paxton Township, “Middle Paxton Township Solar Panel Project,” which had the goal to install a solar array on the roof of the township administration building, saving taxpayer dollars and supporting the environment. Small Project Award: Millersburg Borough, “Millersburg Borough Zoning Ordinance,” which had the goal to create the borough’s first form-based zoning ordinance to solve the problem of uneven development and offer clear standards for new construction. The Timothy P. Reardon Excellence in Planning Award: Monarch Development Group, “Sunflower Fields,” which had the goal to create an affordable workforce housing development in Susquehanna Township with 35 single-family detached homes available for rent. The competition’s judges, representing a variety of planners, engineers and local governments from throughout Dauphin County, praised this year’s 11 entries for their vision, innovation, public involvement, government cooperation, and sensitivity to the area’s history and environment. The five winners of the 2018 Premier Project Awards bring the program’s total number of awards since 2011 to 32.
