A Town Hall to Stop Hate
Boy Scout Troop 97 of Londonderry Township will hold an open house on Saturday, March 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Troop Complex, 1831 Felker Road, Middletown. The open house will feature a campfire hot dog roast and Scout skills instruction. Scout leaders and Boy
Scouts will be available to answer questions and membership applications will be available. The event is open to boys who will be completing fifth grade or a higher grade and who are interested in camping, hiking, canoeing, survival skills, leadership opportunities, and
STEM Team Places In Competition The Lower Dauphin High School STEM team earned second place in CAIU’s regional event in the Governor’s STEM Competition. The event showcased projects in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) created by teams from Dauphin, Perry, Cumberland, Franklin, and northern York counties. The Lower Dauphin Team included Aiden Mende, Madison Karcesky, Elizabeth Heberlig, Kathleen CarterBuske, and Sierra Endy. This was the first time competing for all members of this team. They designed and 3-D printed tiles for watchbands that have textures meant to reduce stress and anxiety. The students named their product “Strebb,” as it is designed to cause one’s stress to ebb.

The Robot Conflict took place in the Small Arena. Competitors tested their robots in three-minute grudge matches against their opponents. The Mudboss competitions also returned to Motorama. Taking home the Stock Mudboss title on Feb. 16 and the 13.5 Mudboss title on Feb. 17 was Brian Wynn from New York. For the fourth consecutive year, Motorama included a demolition derby. Both new and old custom cars and trucks were displayed in the Custom Car, Truck, and Bike Show. On the other side of the complex, the Speed Show featured several hundred racing and high-performance vehicles. Speed Show awards were presented to cars in various categories. Fans and drivers donated to four preselected charities. The recipient organizations were Vista Adult Services in Hershey, the Elizabeth Loranzo iCare Foundation in Middletown, Sick Recovery in Pine Grove, and the Eagle Foundation, which is a part of the Cumberland Valley School District. In addition, the Central Pennsylvania Blood Blank held a blood drive in the Giant Expo Hall. A two-day Ms. Motorama pageant concluded on Saturday morning on the Speed Show stage, with Regina Swinger of Lilly announced as the winner. The 41st annual Motorama Events and Races were held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex on Feb. 16 and 17. The events included Arenacross, gokart racing, and Quarter Midget racing, along with a variety of remote control racing events, featuring scaled trials, Mudboss, and demolition derby competitions. A Custom Car, Truck, and Bike Show took place in the Expo Hall, and a Speed Show was held in the Main Hall. Ryan Evans and Shannon Aikau from the History Channel series “Counting Cars” interacted with fans and vendors. The Large Arena hosted Arenacross action in front of a standing-room-only crowd. More than 900 competitors raced for top honors in various classes. The Holeshot Award was presented to the first rider in each class to drag race from the start gate through the first turn. The Feb. 16 winners included Bryan Dilch, Justin Rodbell, and Derek Leatherman. Holeshot Awards for Feb. 17 went to Zane Martin, John Natalie, and Derek Leatherman. Motorama kicked off the racing season for several area go-kart teams. More than 130 teams packed into the Northeast Hall. Quarter Midget racing took place on both days in the Northwest Hall. Winners included Hoyt Conant, Jaden Brown, Kenny Beinhower, Cody Cordova, and Will Fisher.

The 2019 CHAP Convention will take place at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, June 14, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. A shopping-only pass will be available on June 14 from 2 to 6 p.m. The convention, hosted by the Christian Homeschool Association of Pennsylvania (CHAP), will feature interactive sessions for the whole family. There will be focuses on art, science, and photography, including a photography contest.
Help will be available for parents to evaluate their child’s writing. Also featured will be make-andtake busy bags for toddlers, as well as Teen Track. Interactive booths will be set up throughout the vendor hall and will include a life-size dinosaur. More than 100 vendors will showcase their products. WellSpan Philhaven was one of just two mental health organizations in the state to receive a Mental Health Awareness Training grant from SAMHSA in 2018. The other one is NAMI in Erie County. WellSpan Philhaven will use the funds to expand two of its training programs: Mental Health First Aid and QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer). Both programs teach people how to recognize and respond to someone who is having mental health problems or crises. The training shows people how to respond to

The monthlong celebration, which will continue through Sunday, March 31, began when Master Councilor Holden Green and members of the chapter attended the the Mount Joy Township supervisors’ Feb. 18 meeting, and the supervisors approved a proclamation recognizing March as DeMolay Month. At the Feb. 21 meeting of the Elizabethtown Borough Council, Mayor Chuck Mummert read a similar proclamation, and he and the council members congratulated the DeMolay members for their community work. During DeMolay Month, Elizabethtown Chapter will present a Sponsoring Body Recognition Program, a Senior DeMolay program; visit DeMolay chapters in Carlisle, Greensburg, Harrisburg, Reading and York; and hold a Prospect Party at the Carlisle Sports Emporium on Saturday, March 23, for young men interested in joining DeMolay. On March 17, members and advisers were scheduled to attend a church service at the Sell Chapel at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown in observance of the DeMolay International Devotional Day. The Order of DeMolay is a fraternal organization initially started in Kansas City, Mo., in 1919 by Frank S. Land, for young
men ages 12 to 21. Through its varied activities, the Order of DeMolay teaches the principles of good citizenship, fraternalism, and leadership. The Elizabethtown DeMolay program also includes athletics, public speaking opportunities, community service projects, charitable outreach programs, and social activities. Elizabethtown Chapter currently has a membership of 40 young men from the Elizabethtown area and throughout southcentral Pennsylvania. The Elizabethtown Chapter is sponsored by Abraham C. Treichler Lodge No. 682 Free and Accepted Masons, Corinthian Royal Arch Chapter No. 224, and Lancaster Commandery No. 13 Knights Templar. Vanessa is the daughter of Donna and Greg Wagner. She is a four-year member of the orchestra, where she plays string bass, and is a two-year member of the concert band. She is a four-year member and a leader in the BIG Club, and she is a four-year member of Class Council. She is a two-year member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. In the community, she has performed with the Hershey Symphony Orchestra. She is active with her church and performs in the worship band. Vanessa plans to attend college to major in music education. Miles is the son of Lia and Glenn Book. He a four-year member of the cross-country team and is a team captain. He is also a four-year member of the track and field team. He is a four-year member of the German National Honor Society and a three-year member of the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society. He plays guitar in the jazz band and is a member of the ski club. In the community, he is active in his church. He operates an after-school robotics program at a local day care.
